I posted this in a community I am in, but I also wanted to post it here for my own posterity.
I live in Idaho, and for the past week, I have been on a long road trip driving through Utah and SE Idaho going to various fossil sites, museums, dinosaur attractions, etc. The list of places I visited are:
Dinosaur National Monument - hot hot hot! But very worth it. It is perhaps the most well known location on this list, so I won't be too detailed here. Highly worth it, though!
Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum - a smaller museum, but they had an interesting focus on actual field work which is great if you are interested in spending time in an exhibit focused on the discovery and preservation of fossils as well as seeing skeleton and fossil exhibits. Good hands on exhibits for kids.
Hiking trails like the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Bone Trail and the Copper Creek Dinosaur Track trail - The sun! It is brutal! BRING LOTS OF WATER.
Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point - This is one of the largest, if not the largest, displays of dinosaur skeletons in the country. It was interesting to see the positioning that they chose, and the skeletons were often posed in fully decorated scenes which was a fun change from the usual museum pedestal setups. The museum moves through the fossil record chronologically, so while dinosaurs are a large feature, they are not the only focus.) Excellent space for kids with lots of activities and hands on displays.
Natural History Museum of Utah (they had lokiceratops fossils and a skull cast on display, which was pretty cool to see. Their displays in general were wonderful. Their other displays were also wonderful, and they did a great job including hands on stuff for adults and kids alike.
George S Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden - I had a really fun day here, though the dinosaur statuary was often comically outdated—their T. rex was standing fully erect putting weight on his tail, which was nostalgic and funny. A lot of that statuary is dated because it is from when the park was founded, but they have made some attempts to update the statuary. Inside is a geology exhibit as well as a fossil exhibit, and their signs were informative and more accurate. Overall a very fun experience, though.
Did some driving around and hiking to view some outcroppings at the Wayan Formation, but this was just general site seeing for my own gratification and there isn't really access to much of the area.
Idaho Museum of Natural History at CSI in Pocatello - they had several oryctodromeus fossils as well as complete skeleton displays. This was of particular interest to me because they are unique burrowing dinosaurs found pretty exclusively to the area, and it is now our state dinosaur as of 2023. The museum is small, but I will say that all of the displays are very thoughtful, and they included a lot of birds, small mammals, and plants in their informative displays. The Hagerman Horse also featured, which is our state fossil, and they highlighted the unique fossil record of Idaho.
Hagerman Fossil Bed National Monument - This was my final stop of this particular trip, and I am glad that I went. There is no access to the fossil beds themselves, but there are some great trails with lots of informational placquards with views of the fossil bed area. The Thousand Springs Visitor center for the monument is one of my favorites that I have been to. The rangers were so excited, friendly, and informative. I asked to become a Jr. Ranger, and I did the book and got my badge and patch after being sworn in as a protector of fossils and advocate for conservation by a wonderful ranger who talked with me for a long time about all of the things they had on display as well as an endocast of a hagerman horse brain. The ranger got very excited about that and told me the thing he loved most about it was that the brain size to body mass ratio indicated that it would have been similar to that of modern day horses, so that it indicates that the hagerman horse had personalities, emotions, etc. just as modern horses do. I am already of the belief that this is largely true of all life on the planet, but how it was described really hit me and I got quite emotional about it! It was extra fun because I could see how excited it made the ranger—the expression of like "YES we have TRUE ENGAGEMENT." 😂 It is a small little place, but turned out to be a highlight of my trip.

Anyway, sorry for the long-winded post! I took about 5 million pictures, and am working on organizing them all by location and animal. My goal is to go through, animal by animal, and read the current literature and compare it to the information and skeleton positioning at each of the museums. I will be sharing that progress here eventually. If anyone has any questions or recommendations for travel in the area, hmu!

Wow!!! 🤩
…… He noted that trackways often show multiple species that lived together at the same time, and can reveal other information. This new trackway also shows that wide, squat ankylosaurs — sometimes described as being coffee-table-like — had a surprisingly bird-like gait, lining up left and right feet like "supermodels on a runway." He added, "This track record shows us the coffee table analogy is a little bit flawed." On the other hand, he acknowledged, there is one drawback of footprints compared to bones. "The obvious question is: What do these animals look like? All we have are the feet."

hiii, you can ignore this request if you don’t want todo it!! It’s sort of fluffy/hurt comfort. Spencer and reader have been pining over each other for ages until reader finally asks Spencer on a really cute date to a museum or something. Reader shows up a little early to make sure they are there on time, and waits for Spencer to arrive. Spencer is super super late because something happened on the underground/metro, and reader thinks Spencer has just stood her up so she flees to Penelope. I’m not sure how it would end, and sorry it’s so long!! :)
date — spencer reid
pairing: spencer reid x fem!reader ( no use of y/n ) content warnings: reader feeling upset bc she thinks spencer stood her up a/n: hii !! i love this idea and i hope you like this :) also this gif might be my all time favorite spencer gif
You were early. Maybe a little too early.
But sitting at home, pacing back and forth, obsessively checking the time—it was only making things worse. You’d spent the better part of an hour staring into the mirror, pulling and adjusting your clothes, second-guessing every little detail. At some point, you just had to force yourself out the door before you talked yourself out of it completely.
And now, here you were. Standing outside the museum, shifting from foot to foot, your breath fogging slightly in the crisp afternoon air.
It was a history museum. The moment you’d heard about the new exhibit, your thoughts had gone straight to Spencer.
It had taken you a month to work up the courage to ask him to come with you. A full month of rehearsing in your head, psyching yourself up, only to completely fall apart when the moment actually came.
You had been a stuttering mess, stumbling over your words, barely able to get the invitation out. But Spencer—Spencer had been just as awkward. There had been a long, heart-stopping pause where your pulse pounded so loudly you were sure he could hear it.
Then he nodded. Enthusiastically.
His curls bounced with the movement, and for a second, you thought he might actually be more excited than you were. The two of you had grinned at each other, wide and dorky and entirely too pleased with yourselves.
The memory made you smile as you stood there, phone in hand. You glanced at the screen. 1:55 PM. Five more minutes.
Deep breaths, you reminded yourself.
Your fingers tapped lightly against your thigh as nervous energy buzzed through you. You weren’t sure if it was the anticipation of the date itself or just the fact that it was Spencer.
Maybe both.
Time passed. More than five minutes. More than ten. Too much time.
You had started out standing near the entrance, glancing around every few seconds, expecting to see a familiar figure rushing toward you with an apologetic look on his face. But as the minutes ticked by, your stomach slowly twisted into knots.
Now, you were sitting on a nearby bench, your hands clasped tightly in your lap, biting your lip to keep your emotions in check. You stared down at your phone, heart sinking as the screen lit up. It was much, much later than 2 PM.
Spencer wasn’t coming.
And you knew him well enough to know that Spencer was the most punctual person on the planet. If he hadn’t shown up by now, there was only one explanation.
Spencer Reid stood you up.
Your fingers trembled slightly as you pulled up your contacts, pressing the call button.
Penelope answered on the second ring.
“Hey, sugarplum! What’s up? Are you geeking out over fossils and artifacts yet?”
You hesitated, your throat tightening. “Hi, Pen… are you busy?”
Immediately, her tone shifted. The warmth in her voice was still there, but now it was layered with concern. “No, not at all. What’s wrong? You okay? I thought you and Boy Genius were off on your little nerd date.”
You let out a small, shaky breath, staring down at your shoes as you nudged a small rock. “No… uhm… no.”
There was silence on the other end for a moment, then a softer, more careful voice. “Do you wanna come over?”
You nodded before realizing she couldn’t see you. “Yeah. Yeah, can I?”
“Of course, sweetheart. I made cupcakes this morning. I’ll have some waiting for you.”
You murmured a quiet “thanks” before hanging up, already pushing yourself off the bench. Penelope’s apartment wasn’t too far from the museum—thank God. You just needed to get away from here.
The walk to her place was a blur, and before you knew it, you were curled up on her couch, a plate of cupcakes in front of you. You picked at the frosting absentmindedly before finally whispering the words that had been weighing on your chest.
“He stood me up.”
Penelope’s eyes widened in shock. “What?”
You took another bite of the cupcake, trying to drown your sorrows in the taste of chocolate.
Penelope was still staring at you, her brows furrowed in confusion. “But… he was so excited.”
Your chewing slowed. You glanced up at her. “Hmm?”
She shifted closer, her expression troubled. “Spencer. He had been talking about this all week.”
That caught your attention. You sat up a little straighter, swallowing the bite of cupcake.
Penelope nodded, as if replaying the memories in her head. “He actually bought a new tie for it,” she added, her voice full of certainty. “A completely new tie. I helped him pick it out.”
You blinked, your breath hitching. “What?”
“He wanted it to match you.” She gave you a knowing look. “I mean, he didn’t say that, but I know these things. The man was so particular about the color, the pattern, everything. He kept fidgeting the whole time we were shopping. It was adorable, really.”
Your mind reeled.
Spencer had been planning for this. He had been excited.
So why hadn’t he shown up?
You were suddenly wide-eyed, staring at her as she continued rattling off all the things he had done in preparation for the date—how he had debated over restaurant options in case you wanted to get food after, how he had even worried about what books he might mention so he wouldn’t ramble too much.
He had wanted this.
“Oh.”
It was all you could manage to say. Your brain was still trying to process everything Penelope had just told you.
He had been excited. He had planned for this. He had even bought a new tie.
You couldn’t help the warmth that crept up your neck, a soft blush blooming across your cheeks. “So… he wanted to go out with me?” you asked, your voice laced with disbelief.
Penelope tilted her head at you, giving you a look that practically screamed, Seriously? You still have to ask?
Silence settled between you.
Then, finally, you spoke again—quieter this time, your confusion only growing. “So… why didn’t he come?”
Penelope hummed, tapping a perfectly manicured nail against her chin. “Maybe he got the day wrong?”
You gave her a flat look. “Garcia, it’s literally our only day off from work. I’m pretty sure he didn’t mix it up.”
She groaned, slumping back into the couch. “Right. Good point.”
The two of you sat there, completely stumped.
Penelope let out a dramatic sigh. “I also have some cookies if that helps?”
You exhaled, running a hand through your hair. “Yeah,” you mumbled. “That helps.”
She shot up from the couch. “Good, because emotional support baked goods are my specialty.”
You managed a small smile, but even as she disappeared into the kitchen, your thoughts remained elsewhere.
But then you were pulled from your thoughts by the sound of a knock at the door.
Before you could react, Penelope’s voice rang out from the kitchen. “Can you get that? I’m trying to heat up the cookies.”
“Sure,” you called back, pushing yourself up from the couch and making your way to the door.
The last thing you expected when you opened it was him.
Spencer.
Your mouth fell open slightly.
He stood there, slightly breathless, his shoulders slumped like he’d just run a marathon. His curls were messier than usual, a few stray strands sticking to his forehead. But what caught your attention most was his outfit—something you’d never seen him wear before. A soft button-up, a tie you knew had to be the new one Penelope mentioned, and a blazer that was slightly wrinkled, as if he had been gripping the fabric with nervous hands.
Neither of you said a word. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, as you just stood there, locked in place, staring at each other.
Then, from behind you, Penelope’s voice broke the moment. “The cookies are ready!”
You heard her footsteps approaching before she finally reached the door, holding a plate of freshly warmed cookies in her hands. “Who’s at the—”
Her sentence cut off the moment she saw him.
Spencer.
She froze.
Now she was staring too.
More silence.
You swallowed, your fingers tightening around the edge of the door. “Spencer,” you finally breathed out, your voice barely above a whisper.
He blinked, as if snapping out of whatever trance he was in. His lips parted, like he wanted to say something—needed to say something—but the words just wouldn’t come.
“How dare you stand her up like this?”
Garcia’s voice cut through the tension like a knife. She held the plate of cookies in one hand while the other jabbed a perfectly manicured finger in Spencer’s face.
Spencer’s eyes widened, his cheeks darkening with guilt. “I didn’t mean to, I swear,” he stammered, shifting nervously. His gaze flickered from Garcia to you, his expression almost pleading.
“I took the metro,” he rushed out, “and then it broke down. Completely. They couldn’t get it fixed for an hour and 10 minutes, and my phone didn’t have service underground, and I—” He stopped abruptly, his ramble faltering as he let out a breath.
When he spoke again, his voice was softer. “I’m so sorry.”
Garcia pursed her lips, narrowing her eyes as if debating whether to keep scolding him or let him off the hook. After a moment, she exhaled dramatically and slowly backed away toward the apartment.
“Alright, alright. I see what’s happening here,” she muttered under her breath, before giving you a not-so-subtle wink and slipping inside, leaving the door slightly ajar.
Now, it was just you and Spencer.
You weren’t sure what to say.
You had been so sure he had stood you up. The hurt, the disappointment—it had all settled deep in your chest. But now, standing here in front of him, hearing the way his voice shook with sincerity, seeing the genuine guilt in his hazel eyes, you felt your frustration unravel, piece by piece.
“Oh.”
It was all you managed to say—again.
Spencer winced slightly, rubbing the back of his neck. “I know that’s not really an excuse. I should have—I don’t know, found another way to get to you, or—” He sighed, shoulders slumping. “I just… I’m really sorry.”
You studied him for a moment, your gaze softening. A small smile tugged at the corner of your lips. “So you didn’t ghost me on purpose?”
His eyes widened a bit, and he rushed to correct himself. “No, no, of course not. I wouldn’t do that to you.” His voice dropped slightly, filled with sincerity. “I was actually looking forward to today. I did my research on the museum, and I heard there’s a painting on the second floor that—”
Spencer abruptly stopped himself, his face turning a dark shade of red. He tugged at the strap of his satchel nervously, clearly embarrassed by his over-explanation.
You couldn’t help it—you smiled even wider.
“How did you know I’d be here?” you asked, leaning against the doorframe.
Spencer seemed momentarily caught off guard by the question. “Oh.” He blinked, looking slightly flustered. “Well, you’re very good friends with Garcia,” he said, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
From inside the apartment, you could hear Garcia mumbling with an exaggerated tone, “Good? We are best friends, Dr. Reid.”
You grinned, knowing she was eavesdropping. Spencer’s cheeks reddened further, and he seemed to realize that his conversation was no longer entirely private.
Spencer continued, recovering quickly. “Every time you’ve had a bad day at work, you tend to go to Garcia.” He gave a small shrug, like it was an obvious conclusion. “Like that one time when Hotch made you rewrite your report—remember that? You went to Garcia then.”
You raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
“Or when Strauss got mad at you,” Spencer continued, his voice now soft with the memory. “You also went to Garcia.” He fiddled with his satchel again, clearly fidgeting with nerves.
You let out a small chuckle. “I see how it is. I’m predictable.”
Spencer gave a sheepish smile, his hands finally falling to his sides. “I didn’t mean to make it sound like that. I just—well, you seem to always go to her for advice when you're upset.”
You could hear Garcia mutter a small “As she should,” behind you.
Your heart warmed at his words, and you pushed yourself off the doorframe. “I guess you’re right. I do tend to run to Garcia when things go sideways.”
He nodded, looking slightly relieved that the tension seemed to break between you. “So, I just assumed you’d be here… and when I got here, I wanted to explain… before you thought I had just… forgotten.”
You stepped forward, offering him a smile. “Well, i'm glad i can stop worrying that you've stood me up.”
Spencer’s shoulders relaxed. “I really am sorry,” he repeated, his eyes soft and earnest.
You looked him in the eye, the teasing edge of your voice gone, replaced by something warmer. “It’s okay, Spencer.”
A small, relieved smile spread across his face as he let out a quiet sigh, trying to smooth down his disheveled curls. He tugged at the hem of his shirt, attempting to look a bit more put-together in front of you.
Then, as if on cue, Penelope’s voice cut through the silence, loud and clear from the other room. “Dr. Reid, ask her if she wants to go to the museum now!”
You could almost hear her taking a bite of something, likely one of the cookies she’d been baking earlier.
Both you and Spencer immediately blushed, the heat rising to your faces at her suggestion.
“R-right—yeah, uhm…” Spencer stammered, his voice faltering for a moment as he tried to collect his thoughts. “Would… would you like to go to the museum?” His voice was shy, and the way he stumbled over the words made your heart flutter a little.
You couldn’t help but smile at his awkwardness. “Yes,” you nodded enthusiastically, your excitement starting to bubble up. “I’d love to.”
You turned to Garcia, who was still sitting on the couch, her eyes wide with a smile so big it practically took up her whole face. “I’ll, uh, see you at work, Pen,” you called over your shoulder, still feeling a bit giddy.
Garcia shot you two thumbs up, still grinning like she was the proudest friend in the world. “Have fun, lovebirds!” she yelled after you.
You couldn’t help but laugh at her enthusiasm as you turned back to Spencer, whose face was still a little flushed. “Shall we?” you asked, motioning toward the door.
Spencer nodded, a shy smile tugging at his lips. “Yeah… let’s go.”

About Liparoceras cheltiense Fossil Ammonites:
Liparoceras cheltiense is a species of ammonite from the Lower Pliensbachian Stage of the Early Jurassic period, approximately 190-195 million years ago. These ammonites belonged to an extinct group of marine cephalopods related to modern-day squids, octopuses, and nautiluses.
This species is known for its thick, evolute shell with strong ribbing and pronounced keels, making it a distinctive and highly recognizable ammonite. Fossils of Liparoceras are found in marine sedimentary deposits, particularly in Blockley, Gloucestershire, UK, a site well-known for its exceptional fossil preservation.
Ammonites like Liparoceras cheltiense played a crucial role in prehistoric marine ecosystems and are important index fossils used by paleontologists to date rock layers. Their intricate shell patterns and evolutionary significance make them highly sought-after by collectors and researchers.

Exploring the Demo Characters of Touhou Kinjoukyou ~ Fossilized Wonders
With the arrival of a new mainline Touhou demo, I finally want to take a swing at writing up my own examination and explanation of the cast of Fossilized Wonders so far, alongside my own thoughts on the characters and some speculation as to where the incident is going to go. As an enthusiast of both mythology and paleontology the title definitely intrigued me, to the point I made my own prediction for a possible character, but Fossilized Wonders still managed to surprise. Obviously, spoilers ahead.
Also, thanks to @Yamayuandadu for her help with this post. Ubame Chirizuka
Ubame is fairly straightforward, she’s described as a yamanba, a mountain-dwelling hag that is already represented in the series with Nemuno Sakata. However, her surname, Chirizuka (塵塚), also suggests inspiration from the Chirizuka-Kaiō (塵塚怪王; “Strange King of the Dust Heap”), a yōkai depicted by the famous Edo period artist Toriyama Sekien in the Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro (百器徒然袋). Although images of a creature similar to the Chirizuka-Kaiō are found in Muromachi period night parade scrolls (百鬼夜行絵巻, Hyakki Yagyō Emaki), the name and description of the yōkai provided in the Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro were seemingly created by Sekien.
Toriyama Sekien’s depiction of the Chirizuka-Kaiō from the Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro.
According to Sekien, the Chirizuka-Kaiō is chief of the yamanba, an apparent allusion to the noh play Yamanba, though the Chirizuka-Kaiō has also been associated with Tsukumogami due to its illustration in the Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro, which depicts it releasing a horde of Tsukumogami, alongside the fact that the work is otherwise filled with illustrations of Tsukumogami. Ubame herself is noted to be the king of the yamanba, much like the Chirizuka-Kaiō, and even has a crown to boot. Moreover, her spell cards also make reference to the karabitsu (唐櫃), a kind of six-legged Chinese chest, which the Chirizuka-Kaiō is notably depicted prying open.
As an aside, her given name Ubame is likely taken from the Ubame oak (姥目樫, ubamegashi), in much the same way that the name Nemuno is likely taken from the Persian silk tree (合歓木, nemunoki), which is a fun way to link the two yamanba characters together. Chimi Houjuu
Chimi is certainly one of the stranger characters visually, however her basis is evident from her name, as chimi can also refer to malevolent mountain-dwelling spirits (魑魅, also known as chimei in China). The chimei (alongside the mōryō/wangliang) is typically characterized as a troublesome spirit/monster that dwells in the wilderness, namely mountains and rivers. Just as Chimi’s bio says, the chimei and wangliang are indeed very ancient too. Notably appearing in Chinese texts such as the Zhuozuan (左傳), written in the 4th century BCE, as demons that attack people in rivers, lakes mountains and forests. Additionally, the mei (魅) recorded in the Shanhai-jing (山海經), which likely dates to the Han dynasty, has been identified by most commentaries on the text as identical with the chimei. Here the chimei is again associated with the wangliang, as a dangerous creature that lurks in mountains and waters, and is said to attack unwary travelers.
The wangliang specifically was also believed to dwell in tombs, where it was thought to devour corpses. Because of this, the wangliang was the subject of particular exorcism rites, with the Zhouli (周禮), written in the 2nd century BCE, noting how the wangliang was driven away by Fangxiangshi exorcists. Here it is said that, during royal funerals, a Fangxiangshi would strike the four corners of the funeral chamber with a lance, to drive away corpse-eating fangliang (方良, another name for the wangliang). Chimi’s bio additionally states that she is a creature known for its long ears, alongside her hair being suggestive of ears, which would appear to be a trait taken from the mōryō/wangliang. The Huainanzi (淮南子) for instance, states that the wangliang has “long ears and beautiful hair”, and the Wakan Sansaizui (和漢三才図会) also depicts a mōryō with long rabbit-like ears.

A depiction of a mōryō/wangliang from the Wakan Sansaizui.
Collectively Chimimōryō/Chimeiwangliang (魑魅魍魎) is occasionally used to refer to hordes of monsters, or otherwise nondescript collectives of spirits/demons. In one version of Gozu Tennō’s origin for instance, he is said to have become a leader of demons, Chimimōryō (魑魅魍魎), where he is otherwise stated to preside over the many gods of pestilence. Chimi herself appears to simultaneously represent both a chimei and wangliang, given she takes the long ears of the latter, and presumably the wangliang’s association with tombs, given her presence in an incident which revolves around a pyramid. Though I can’t help but wonder if we’ll also get a wangliang character in the full release, to complete the duo. One aspect does strike me as particularly unusual about Chimi however, that being her surname Houjuu (封獣), which she shares with Nue Houjuu (封獣 ぬえ). I'm unfamiliar with any connection between the nue and the chimei, though I suspect it may be something which will be expanded on by ZUN himself. Nareko Michigami
Despite the stereotypical Egyptian theming to her design, Nareko is actually noted as being a dōsojin (道祖神; “roadside deity”), which are Japanese folk deities enshrined by the side of the road and serve to avert disease and misfortune. The name Michigami (道神; “god of the road”) pretty directly draws from the kanji in dōsojin, though using the kun’yomi reading of the characters. Nareko’s stated ability to “block roads” is also a fairly direct representation of the dōsojin’s power, as they are believed to block off roads from evil influences, earning them the alternative name sae-no-kami (障の神; “god of obstruction”, not to be confused with shōgejin (障礙神) which refers to obstructive Buddhist deities like Matarajin). A typical example of a dōsojin is the ever-present Jizō statue, which is represented in Touhou by the character Narumi Yatadera. However another common form of dōsojin are statues featuring a man and woman, typically embracing or holding hands. Occasionally the pair in question are specific deities such as Sarutahiko and Ame-no-Uzume, which were often regarded as a married couple in popular perception. The crest adorning Nareko’s tiara also appears to depict an embracing pair of figures, demonstrating her connection to the Japanese dōsojin, despite her otherwise Egyptian design.
A dōsojin statue from Azumino in Nagano, depicting a male and female couple.
The iconography of these statues could also be particularly explicit, with the depicted figures sometimes being shown kissing or even copulating. Furthermore, the dōsojin itself could often take the form of a phallic stone. The exact reason for this sexual symbolism is unclear, though it evidently appears to have been a powerful apotropaic image. In any case, the cult worship of such stones can be traced back to the paleolithic/neolithic, and it was only much later that the iconography of the dōsojin became anthropomorphized. It is also worth pointing out that, although Nareko’s design suggests an Egyptian theme, the riddle-telling sphinx she references in her dialogue is specifically Greek in origin, not Egyptian. In the myth of Oedipus, the sphinx is portrayed as a feline being with the head and breasts of a woman and feathered wings. While not divine herself, the sphinx was placed near Thebes by Hera for reasons unknown, and menaced anyone passing by with a riddle she learned from the Muses (interestingly, while Greek authors present the content of the riddle itself consistently, there was no agreement over whether it was supposed to be poetry or prose).
A depiction of Oedipus pondering the the sphinx's riddle, 5th century BCE. The popular image of sphinx today is based on a type of statue commonly manufactured in ancient Egypt, which is more correctly referred to as an “androsphinx” - literally “male sphinx”. This term was coined in antiquity by the Greeks, though. The term Egyptians used to refer to this type of statue has yet to be identified, if it existed in the first place. In Egyptian art, this sphinx was typically the representation of the pharaoh or his wife. For example, the Great Sphinx of Giza is a representation of Chefren. Additionally, in the Hellenistic period the god Tithoes came to be depicted as a sphinx. A similar being with a ram’s head instead of a human’s was one of the representations of the god Amun. While it is sometimes referred to as a “criosphinx” today, Egyptologists sometimes question the validity of calling it a sphinx at all.
Speculation on the Full Release
It seems that many have taken Nareko’s design as a sign that the incident will feature more explicit Egyptian mythology, and while I’m not opposed to the idea in principle, I can’t help but be skeptical. ZUN tends to leave the direction of an incident very unclear with the demo, and I feel that Nareko would be a little too on-the-nose there. Instead I would argue that Nareko’s design is a bit of a red-herring, and is only themed that way to match her role in guarding a pyramid, after all, there is no reason that the pyramid needs to be Egyptian. Rather, I suspect that the pyramid, and indeed the incident more broadly, will be tied to Mount Minakami (皆神山; “Mountain of Every God”) of the Nagano prefecture, which serves as the location of Gensokyo. Due to the mountain’s unique shape, it has been presented in fringe theories as a prehistoric man-made mound, said to be “the world’s largest pyramid”. There is even a local “Pyramid Festival” (ピラミッド祭り) held on the 5th of May (the same date the Demo was released on) celebrating this idea. To be clear this is almost certainly complete pseudoarcheology, of a similar vein to the Bosnian pyramid claims, however it is still fair game for Touhou.
Mount Minakami.
Outside of pseudoarcheology, Mount Minakami also has its fair share of shrines to draw from. The Iwato Shrine (岩戸神社) in particular, built around a small cave entrance about halfway up the mountain, is believed to be the remains of the stone entrance (天岩戸, Ama-no-Iwato) that was hurled from Takamagahara by Tajikarao once Amaterasu was lured out of hiding. This same cave is also held to be the entrance of the supposed pyramid, allowing for an easy association to be made between the two. To be fair, I also doubt that ZUN would feature a deity as high profile as Amaterasu, even in such a milestone game, but there’s clearly a throughline to link classical Japanese mythology with a fun fringe theory. While also a bit of a reach, the notion of a prehistoric pyramid would also explain why ZUN decided to feature a figure of the “Heart-Shaped Dogū” (ハート形土偶) with his picture of the demo, perhaps hinting that the incident will feature Jōmon artifacts and aesthetics, alongside advanced technology, akin to what WBaWC did with Kofun burial mounds.
“Heart-Shaped Dogū” (ハート形土偶).
Other than this, my first impression with the name alone was that we were going to get a character based around prehistoric life, hence my own prediction. And while I wouldn’t rule out the possibility completely, it certainly doesn’t seem like the incident is going that way directly. There is also a rather unexpected reference made to the figure of Prester John in the stage 3 theme, Prester John being a legendary Nestorian patriarch and king who ruled over a lost Christian nation in Central Asia, and was said to have lived in a palace built from gold and precious gems. Now an incident themed around Nestorian Christianity would certainly shake things up (Nestorianism being an eastern branch of Christianity that was even able to spread into China by 635), but given that this is just a stage theme, and nothing else in the game really hints towards Nestorianism, I'm highly skeptical that this has any deeper meaning to it, and it would be a strange way to reveal the direction of the incident.
Thoughts on the Characters
I’ll admit I’m fairly mixed on the characters of Fossilized Wonders. They’re pretty fun conceptually, but their designs aren’t really to my taste, and don’t have the same immediate appeal that the cast of WBaWC had for me. Ubame’s design feels a little incomplete, especially in comparison to Nemuno, and could’ve really done with including the karabitsu chest that the Sekien illustration has. Chimi’s design is deliberately abstract and nature-themed, but doesn’t feel like it works in ZUN’s style. Should be a fun design to draw though. And while I think Nareko is a really funny character, and her design is easily my favorite out of the three, she also feels very… disorganized? Trying to mesh the concept of a dōsojin with the rather surface level Egyptian aesthetic just causes both to come across as half-baked, and I would prefer her design to have darker skin if the latter was more emphasized.
Additionally, I really wish there was a bit more to chew on with regards to the characters inspirations. They all seem to be pretty generic representatives of their given species (excluding Nareko’s quirks), rather than being something more specific, as with characters like Eternity Larva, Eika and Kutaka. Hopefully the full release will be able to pick up the slack there, but it does still leave something to be desired. Generally I’m more fond of characters with a laser-focused inspiration, rather than those who try to represent an entire category of creature/deity, and some of the recent additions like Chimata especially suffer in that respect for me.
That being said, I’m still very optimistic about Fossilized Wonders, even assuming I’m correct about Mount Minakami, I’m still likely going to be surprised with what Zun ends up doing. And I can very easily see myself warming to the new characters over time.

under the summer stars masterlist
It was safe to say that you had screwed up any chance of being with Ellie. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be or in the stars for you. Whatever saying that referred to being made for each other did not apply to you and Ellie.
Maybe saying Abby was a good thing; bring you down from this fantasy world and move the hell on. You were leaning back in a lawn chair, slathered in sunscreen and wearing sunglasses to protect your retinas from the burning UV rays (and shamelessly staring at a certain somebody). The children in your cabin were playing some good old-fashioned duck-duck-goose before they had their big Tug-O-War match between all the cabins.
You could see Ellie from a distance with her own group digging in the sandbox for some ‘fossils’. Your eyes were practically formed into hearts seeing her enthusiastically explain all the dinosaur bones and which deceased animal they belonged to. Her geekiness made her even more attractive to you if that was even possible.
No. Enough.
You shook your head and found yourself glancing over at Abby’s group who were running through the extra-large bubbles, giggling happily. The tall blonde had admiration written all over her face at how much fun the kids were having; bright smile and all. You would be lying to yourself if you hadn’t been checking out Abby’s muscular arms and legs when she would break out her athletic shorts and shirts.
“You know just because you like girls doesn’t make your staring any less creepy?” You hear from beside you which causes you to jump a little.
You smack Dina’s leg for scaring you. You’re beyond glad you were wearing sunglasses as you didn’t want him to be right. Could everyone tell that you were gawking at Ellie’s fingers gently caressing the rocks like she was touching your thigh last—
My god, you needed help.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” you shrug your shoulders, grabbing your handheld fan from the tote bag next to you on the ground and shaking it in front of your face.
“Come on. You don’t think I know you’re eye-fucking Ellie?” She mutters close to you as you both glance around but neither of your groups were paying attention to you guys.
“Not Ellie,” you state simply.
Dina audibly gasps and kneels down next to your chair, peeing over the direction you were.
“Wait, are you gawking at Abby?” She questioned with a soft chuckle.
“Maybe?” You say unsure of what you are truly feeling.
“I mean, yum, but I didn’t you were serious about moving on from Ellie,” Dina emphasized as you both stared at Abby grabbing one of the large coolers and moving it to where the kids were.
You sighed as your eyes flickered over at the one that held your heart before fixating on Abby once again.
“Yeah, well, it’s not like I’m going to do anything about Abby either. Just admiring from afar.”
“And where has that gotten you over the past three years?” Dina deadpanned, raising her brows at you as she patted her sweaty upper lip with the back of her hand.
You remained silent as she got you there. Dina stood up from her position next to you, patting your shoulder before jerking her head towards the Tug-O-War makeshift arena.
“C’mon. Enough pining. We gotta get the kids for Tug-O-War. It’s mine against yours first,” Dina cheekily responded before jogging over to her campers.
You shot up from your seat and grabbed your whistle that was dangling around your neck, slotting it into your mouth to blow to get everyone’s attention. All of your campers froze their game of Duck-Duck-Goose, immediately scurrying over to you.
“Alright, campers! You guys ready to do Tug-O-War?” You shout with enthusiasm in your voice.
The kids started screaming with excitement, matching your energy times a million. You winced a little bit but kept your smile.
“I said,” you pause for dramatics. “Are you ready for Tug-O-War?” You over-enunciate every word which resulted in an uproar of cheers.
You chuckle softly and motion for the kids to follow you to the makeshift arena. There, a few feet across, was your friend and opponent, Dina and her campers. The brunette had her arms crossed over her chest with a playful narrow, motioning that she was watching us. You mouth that she was going down to which she scoffed and rolled her eyes.
The mediator, Jesse, cleared his throat as he explained the rules of the game. Basic no-cheating, no pushing, shoving, etc. He had one hand on his hip with a megaphone in the other.
“Lookin’ good, mediator,” Dina calls over to Jesse who points warningly at her.
“You know the rules, Miss Dina. No sweet talking.” Jesse gave her one more glance before clearing his throat.
You snort to yourself before instructing your kids to keep their feet planted and wide and to tug as hard as they can. As soon as Jesse shouted ‘Go!’, everyone in your team began pulling with all their might. You watched as Dina’s team was completely thrown off guard and slipped over the dry grass beneath their sneakers. You kept shouting that the kids had it and to not let go.
After one final tug from your team, the ribbon in the middle of the rope moved past the white indicator line. You gasped as Jesse shouted, ‘One point to the Daisies!’. You huddled in with the kids, bouncing up and down with glee at the victory. In good spirit, the opposite teams gave each other high fives just like after a little league baseball game.
This went on for about an hour; each winner fighting against one another until it came to the last two. Not your surprise, you and Ellie’s campers came neck in neck with the points. On the sidelines, all of the other campers and friends of yours were cheering for both sides to not show preference for either team.
Ellie’s green eyes were narrowed at you with a taunting eyebrow raise while you scratched at your nose with your middle finger to discreetly flip her off. She caught it almost instantly and shook her head, prodding her tongue into her inner cheek.
“Our finalists, the mighty Daisies and the strong Dinos are about to have their final throw down. The winning team gets this highly expensive, one-of-a-kind trophy!” Jesse announced which caused the entirety of the camp which resulted in an uproar of cheers.
It was a trophy off of Amazon that read ‘#1 Champions’ that was 7 bucks but Jesse knew how to get the kids more and more competitive and eager to win. You locked eyes with Ellie from a few feet away, a shiver sliding down your back when she licked her lips before tightly gripping the thick rope.
The veins on her arms and hands protruded out, her sweat making them glisten under the hot sunbeams. You just needed a photo of what you were looking at and you would be content forever. Distracted by her annoying good looks, you tripped over your own feet when Jesse announced that the final Tug-O-War was on.
But you quickly held your ground and began tugging the rope as aggressively as possible, trying not to get overwhelmed by the amount of cheering coming from your friends and other campers. It took a few minutes before the Dinos did one final tug that caused the flag in the middle to move past the white line.
You glanced down at your hands, sighing at the sight of a few burn marks as you released the rope. Ellie was surrounded by her campers, all excitedly jumping up and down with her. You couldn’t even be sad about losing seeing her so happy. She had rubbed every single one of their heads, telling them how cool and strong they all were.
“Our winners; the Dino cabin!” Jesse shouts into the megaphone, jogging over to hand Ellie the medium-sized trophy.
Ellie snatched it from him to hold it up over her head to show it off. She then grabbed the megaphone from Jesse as well, clearing her throat as she began to give a speech.
“I just want to say thank you to my amazing group of campers. I couldn’t have done it without all of these Incredible Hulks over here,” Ellie smiled like a maniac as the campers started clapping. “But it’s getting too hot out here guys so let’s head over to the Arts cabin to make our bracelets with some snacks and drinks. Let’s go, everybody.”
You told your campers to follow you to the Arts cabin, making sure to let them know how great they did regardless of not being in first place. They all agreed but told you they were excited to get bracelet making. That eased your worries. As much as you enjoy these competitive activities, you are terrified that the kids will begin to feel bad about themselves.
As your group entered the cabin, you instructed your kids to wait in line to get snacks and drinks. You watch them all carefully make their way over to the four lines when you feel a hand rest on your clothed shoulder.
“I didn’t think Ellie could beat you,” Abby’s low voice mutters.
“She’s toned, Abs. I think it was a fair one so,” you shrug your shoulders as you check the list of activities on your clipboard.
“Yeah, I guess so but I was rooting for you.” Abby gave your shoulder a soft squeeze.
You turn to her with a friendly smile, raising your eyebrows at her own slightly frizzy braid.
“Well, I mean we all know why you were winning your Tug-O-Wars,” you eye her biceps, reaching one hand forward to touch the heated skin from being out in the sun.
Abby seemed to just let you touch her, the muscle tensing under your fingers. You look at her and notice how obvious you are with this weird attempt at flirting. You retract your hand and clear your throat.
“So, later when we take our campers to the campfire for s’mores, can I save you a spot?” Abby blatantly stares at your lips before flickering up to your eyes.
From across the room, you make eye contact with Ellie who seems more confused than anything. Jesse was rambling to her about something that you weren’t able to hear as she was helping him set up the bracelet-making table, twiddling with the strands.
“Yeah, Abs. That sounds good,” you nod after forcefully tearing your eyes away from Ellie’s tense posture.
“Yeah?” Abby asks once to confirm.
You hum to ease her mind, nodding with a kind smile.
“Okay, I’ll do that,” Abby nods more so to herself before jerking her head over to her group of campers.
As Abby left you by yourself with your hammering thoughts, you felt a nudge to your hip. You look down to see one of your campers holding up a string to you.
“Can you help me make a bracelet for Beth?” Carter questions, adjusting his baby. blue glasses on his face.
“Yeah, of course, bud.”
“I sorta got mad at her earlier and I want her to know that I’m sorry for doing that,” the little blonde boy expresses, shyly messing with the string.
You thought it was so adorable to see kids express their emotions differently. You’ve noticed as people age, emotions become harder to express. There was no fear in his eyes; a little timid, sure but he knew he had to express it somehow. Yes, people are complicated but children are so open; so innocent.
“I’m sure you didn’t mean it, Carter.”
From across the room you spotted Beth, giggling with Vanessa quietly as they made their own bracelets. Carter quietly told you that he noticed how much she wore the color purple so you helped him pick out the different shades of purple beads to slide onto the bracelet.
The crowd of kids chattering was a weird comfort to you. You couldn’t express it enough how much you loved this job.
After the children had their snacks and finished up the crafting, Tommy and Joel escorted everyone’s campers to their assigned cabin. The counselors cleaned up the art room during that time period. You had no desire to clean so you snuck out to sit on the steps as you waited for everyone else to be done.
As you doodle on your clipboard, you hear the door open behind you and you pretend to make notes instead. That is until you look over your shoulder to see Ellie standing with her arms crossed behind her back.
“Hey,” you grinned at her.
Ellie reciprocates the gesture, looking away from you for a moment.
“Hi,” the auburn-haired girl tilted her head at you. “I was wondering where you went.”
Was your back sweating from anxiety or the heat?
“Sorry. I… didn’t really feel like cleaning,” you weakly chuckled before focusing back on your scribbles and doodles.
“It’s not a lot to clean so you’re good. I just wanted to, uh,” Ellie cleared her throat before making her way closer to you, the boards beneath her feet slightly squeaking.
Before you knew it, an object hit your clipboard right underneath your graphite nonsense. Your eyes drop to it and your brows furrow in confusion.
“What’s this?”
You question as you stare at the bracelet that Ellie has now thrown on the clipboard in front of you resting on your knees. It was a mixture of beads of your favorite colors with your initial smack dab in the middle.
“An apology in a way. I noticed you’ve been kind of distant today so if it was something I did or said,” Ellie scratched behind her ear as she grinned weakly at you. “I’m sorry.”
So that’s why she had been making bracelets earlier. You would be lying if you said you hadn’t been acting weird or distant all of today. You hadn’t talked to Ellie on your own once, which clearly didn’t go didn't go unnoticed by the freckled girl. You felt like an insensitive ass acting this way.
“Els, it’s a personal thing. I’m sorry for being weird,” you stated as you fiddled with the bracelet.
“It’s okay. Just… wanna make sure my favorite girl doesn’t hate me,” Ellie nervously chuckled.
What the hell was she doing to you?
”I don’t think I ever could,” you admit as you admire the slightly too-big bracelet.
Ellie nodded, her green eyes darting from the apology in your hands to your expression. She seemed so antsy to give it to you; secretly afraid that you would hate it or think it was strange or pushing a boundary.
“How’s your tattoo?” Ellie questioned.
“Oh, um, all good. You did amazing, Els.” You reassure her.
“Can I see it to double-check? For… irritation.”
You stare into her wide green eyes, noticing how dilated her pupils are. There was the smallest ring of green due to how much the pupils were taking up her eyes.
“Sure, yeah,” you carefully lifted up your shorts leg to show her the small sun.
It was a bit splotchy but adorable nonetheless. You had put on soothing shea butter lotion and washed it gently this morning so it was good as new. Ellie reached her fingers forward to carefully trace over the detailed spiral in the middle. Goosebumps rose instantly to the surface of your skin despite the drastic heat outside.
“Looks good. It suits you.” Ellie confesses to you, grinning as her thumb traces over the inked section of your upper thigh.
“I might visit you again to get more. Maybe some finger ones?” You suggest, holding your hands out to her.
Ellie carefully takes your hands in hers.
“It’d be pretty hot, honestly,” Ellie murmured like she didn’t want her comment to be heard.
“Yeah, I thought so too,” you add on with a cheeky smile, nudging her shoulder.
Ellie’s entire face flushed at your words, releasing your hand as she muttered a soft ‘shut up’. You simply chuckled as you rested your head on her shoulder.
“Well, I’ll see you later at the campfire. I just wanted to give that to you before I forgot.” Ellie scratched behind your ear with a chuckle, moving on from her slight mistake.
“Mmm, I would take a shower first though,” you tease.
Ellie shook her head and scoffed.
“Really? After I gave you a gift?” She muttered as she leaned down to place her sweaty front side over your seated back.
You let out a string of groans and ‘get off’ before Ellie reluctantly lifted her body up and off of you. She stood up on her feet and nudged your leg with her Converse-covered feet.
“I’ll see you in a bit.” Ellie nodded before turning on her heels.
You sigh as you twiddle with the sweet gesture from the freckled girl. You silently watch her make her to her own cabin, probably wrangling for the children to quiet down so that she can do a headcount.
“Getting over her, huh?” You hear from behind you which causes you to nearly jump out of your skin.
Dina’s standing there with her arms folded across her chest, the wooden door behind her shutting softly.
“I don’t want to hear it, D,” you sigh as you stand up on the chipping blue wooden staircase.
Dina continuously tries to voice her opinion on how she feels but you make a noise of protest every time. She walks up to you and places both hands on your shoulders, forcing you to listen to her at this point.
“I just don’t know why you’re forcing yourself to fixate on Abby and why you don’t just tell Ellie how you feel.”
You’ve heard this twice now and you can’t help but feel like maybe they’re right. It’s high-risk, high-reward explaining how you feel to Ellie. You would give anything to know exactly how she felt about you so that you could ultimately just either push the crush away or finally open your mouth to tell her you want her more than you needed oxygen.
“You think I should?” You question curiously, your eyes pouring into Dina’s heartfelt ones.
“Yes. 99%” Dina replies.
You groan at her answer, trying to move away from her. She chuckles and shakes your shoulders to refocus your attention on her.
“I’m kidding. Seriously, 110%. I don’t think you see how Ellie looks at you, dude.” Dina emphasizes this with complete sincerity.
Steve’s words, too, echoed in your brain as you took in what Dina said to you.
“I’m just saying if I know flirting,” he leaned down to mutter to you, “and I think I do, she wants you just as badly as you want her. My personal opinion is to go for it.”
Should you? You were making your head hurt with the constant back and forth. Ellie was the lucky one. She had no idea what was going on in your head and this you were thankful for. The sun was setting and it was nearly time for the campfire.
You walked away from Dina with a pounding question in your head: Abby or Ellie?

TetZooCon 2024
I am back from the UK and what was the „final“ TetZooCon ever. As every year before it was two great days of talking with fellow natural history enthusiasts, bleeding my wallet at stalls of awesome art and literature and of course some fascinating presentations.

The actual convention was then followed by a three day trip, the tetzootour, stopping at the Horniman Museum for Luis Rey‘s „Dinosaur rEvolution“, Lyme Regis for fossil hunting and Howletts Wild Animal Park.

i drew this purely for the fun outfits and then a trusted friend of mine pinpointed the vibe as "it's giving wild west homesteader" and "tom is the enthusiastic amateur naturalist who spends all his time looking for fossils meanwhile hester is shooting twelve point bucks" and honestly, yes.
#wren looks like that evil cat from instagram#like man imagine drawing canon. couldn't be me#mortal engines#my art
