The Martian Stan AU - The Apology - Excerpt
Ford was working as he always was nowadays, half listening to the radio behind him and trying to stop his heart from jumping in his throat every time that Stan stopped speaking for more than 10 minutes and nothing but static filled the room again. Ford wasn’t sure what exactly his brother was talking about anymore, as he welded a set of support bolts into place, but he nearly dropped the welding gun on his foot when Stan suddenly spoke after a long stretch of silence.
“Ford?”
Ford fumbled for a moment before shoving a stack of loose paper aside and  setting the welding gun down on the table beside him. He put his hands on either side of the radio on the same cluttered table and took a deep breath to calm his pounding heart.
“Yes, Stanley?” He asked softly.
Stan, of course, didn’t hear him, but had paused as if waiting for a response before continuing anyway.
“I know, I know damn well you’re probably never gonna hear this, but I need to say it anyway before… Well. I don’t need to eat as often and shit and I know you’d love to figure out why but… I’m not sure how long I’m gonna last out here either way.”
Ford didn’t say anything, staring down at the wooden grain of the table like he could burn a hole clean through it with his thoughts alone. His palms ached from where he’d dug in his fingernails, and his shoulders mangled to hunch even further.
Stan laughed. It was a bitter, ugly sound.
“Ah, damnit. This isn’t about me. Can’t even do this right, you idiot” His brother took a deep breath. “ But Ford… I think I need to apologize.”
Some old, fossilized hurt in Ford’s heart snarked ‘you think?’, but Ford nearly gagged as he suffocated the thought before it could take root anew. He felt sick.
Oblivious to Ford’s turmoil —and of course he was, because he didn’t know Ford was right here, that Ford wasn’t going to let one of the last things he ever said to Stan be that he thought Stan was worthless— Stan continued.
“I don’t think I ever got to, back when… you know. What I said that night is a bit of a blur to me to be honest, but I know I was spouting nonsense and saying all the wrong shit and… Moses, Ford. I know it’s too late now but I’m sorry. I really am.”
Something in Ford simultaneously healed and broke in his chest at Stan’s words, but he didn’t get the chance to process it because Stan wasn’t quite done yet.
“And I need you to know it wasn’t on purpose. I’d never do that to you. Never. Why would I ever want to hurt you like that, poindexter? I just… I was scared and I didn’t want to be alone in Glass Shard Beach scraping barnacles off the Taffy shop for the rest of my miserable life and I wasn’t. Thinking.” Stanley’s voice had been rising in a steady crescendo, but suddenly got so quiet that Ford had to strain to catch the words in the buzzing static. “I’d… I shouldn’t have gone into the gym. I shouldn’t have even gone near your friggin project. I didn’t go there to break it, I would never—“ his voice broke. “I thought you knew that. I’m your brother, you dingbat, why would I ever want to hurt you? When did I ever not support you, man?”
“Then why did you do it?” Ford whispered back, just as quiet. That old anger he’d tried to push down rose up again, simmering. Stan knew he’d poured months of his life into the perpetual motion machine, that he’s shed more than a few tears and more than a little blood and sweat over it. And then he’d thrown it all away?
“I’d only hit the table, ya know. Didn’t think the grate’d pop off or anything like that. I tried to fix it. I know I should’ve told you, I know and I’m sorry, just…” I was scared, goes unspoken. Ford’s legs were shaking, and he tried to steadily himself by leaning further on the table. “I know I should’ve told you. I know. I messed up fuckin’ good, Sixer.” Ford flinched.
“I’m. I know you’re never gonna get the apology you deserve cause I was too much of a coward to actually call you and say something.” Stan’s voice was shaking. And I’m sorry for that too. And I’m sorry for not listening to you about your stupid book, and I’m sorry— ugh. We’ll be here all day trying to name my fuckups. That’s the last sorry you’ll ever hear from me you nerdy, uh, nerd.”
Stan sighed loud enough for the radio to crackle and screech. “Good going, Stan,” he muttered, his voice getting quieter as he evidently walked away, done.
And all that was left was static.
Ford pushed himself away from the table and sank into the rolling chair nearby, putting his face in his hands and trying to breathe as the chair was pushed back several feet from his momentum.
“He’s lying,” Ford tried to say, but it tasted like ash in his mouth. “He’s trying to make it so… so.” He faltered. “He’s obviously trying to deceive me.”
Trust no one.
But he had trusted Stan. And Stan got hurled into a Dimension of Nightmares for it.
Stan has no reason to lie, Fords mind whispered, because it was always against him no matter what stance he took. He doesn’t think you’re coming to save him. Why wouldn’t he try to explain the worst mistake of his life in a fit of guilt and complete loss of hope?
“Shut up,” Ford said intelligently, and he didn’t dare pry his face away from his hands, heels of his palms digging into his eye sockets and pushing up his glasses to his hairline
Stan had no reason to lie.
Stan came to help him at the drop of a hat after ten years of being too afraid to even call him.
Stan… Stan didn’t mean to break his project. It was a stupid accident, done by a stupid teenager too afraid to admit his own failings. Stan didn’t betray Ford. Not like he thought his twin had, for all these years.
Ford was wrong. About everything. He was wrong about Stan and Bill and Fiddleford and, Moses, had he ever done anything right in his entire, miserable life? Ford didn’t know.
The empty bunk bed beneath his own  for those last few fateful months before Backupsmore, the tears and screaming at a boat that never even left the shore, the years of resentment and refusing to believe he missed his own twin, what was it all for? Because Ford suddenly felt the sharp sting of grief all over again, throbbing with a ferocity he’d refused to acknowledge for the past few weeks. Years.
It was like he was 17 years old again, mourning for all the wrong reasons and all the right ones too. For his brother. For his chance to become someone worthy of recognition, of love. For pushing away the ones who’d already loved him.
For the first time since the day Stan fell into the portal all those weeks ago, Ford pulled his knees up to his chest on the seat and, in the safety of his own arms, he wept.
The static crackled on, steady and unchanging. Unforgiving.

It had been quite the amount of time since Imogen last had sand in her shoes.
She isn’t given much time to dwell on it; Ms Laudna coming into clarity as Imogen approaches, hunched forward with her arm further than elbow-deep in one of the rockpools.
“I see you took the opportunity for a swim.” She states matter-of-factly, inspecting a pebble in her hand before placing it on the same swatch of cloth that had lent itself for the oyster spread.
“A-yeah, sorry about that - kinda happened without thinkin’.” Probably a bit too candid, and it gets a momentarily raised brow from the woman sat at the rockpool, before her attention returns to the miscellaneous selection of stones by her side.
“I am sure it did you good, and your wound? How is that looking?”
“Oh, fine, thank you. I was in there long enough it’s already stitchin’ together again.”
“Your intuition served you well then.”
Imogen can only assume that the compliment weighs so much because she regards the Lady as so worldly - and not only because of her age.
Maybe it’s because she doesn’t know, hasn’t taken that look behind the curtain for herself; rendering the woman and her behaviour even more mystifying and esoteric, the leading suggestions behind her statements as well as the knowledge eagerly shared.
Regardless of the rumours.
The selection of rocks and oyster shells on the embroidered cloth, now dirtied with splotches of wet sand and a curl of seaweed like a stray hair.
“What’re you collectin’?” Imogen hopes that it’s a feasible and polite-enough question.
“Whatever interests me – it’s quite a renowned stretch of coast, you know.”
Imogen wants to ask how closely related these stories are to the lake’s, but she isn’t sure if that would break her own personally-set parameters.
“Yeah? What for?”
“Here- look at this…”
Ms Laudna retrieves one of the pebbles from her side; a larger and more flat one in comparison to the rest of the bunch. She sits back; resting on the palm of one of her hands, the other holding the stone aloft for Imogen to inspect, expectant and notably casual - as she had been at the base of the statue in her garden.
Imogen steps to meet her, taking the stone into her own hands and bringing it to eye-level.
At first it looks as though its surface is imprinted with the weave of a wicker basket, but as Imogen tilts the rock in the sunlight she sees that these impressions are actually in relief, swelling outwards, dividing and complex
Like roots
like veins
Like the gnarled scars that cover her hands from fingertip to mid-palm
(and climbing-)
She wants to touch the surface with her bare fingers, wonders if she can excuse herself for a trip down to the ocean once again.
Imogen is sure that the Lady has not seen her hands, and yet the timing, the curation
Perhaps she is thinking too much from her own perspective. It is not the view she has had to grow accustomed to.
“Oh, it has a pattern an’ a texture.”
“Isn’t it beautiful? I admit I had to get my notebook out to remember the name of this one.”
She thinks it’s beautiful.
“It has a name?”
“Yes dear, it’s a fossil. A Pentacrinites crinoid.”
Imogen doesn’t call the Lady out on her incorrect addressing, allows the word to soothe a scar she carries that is much older than the fresh cut on her fingertip.
“I’m not even gonna try t’say that.”
“They’re often called sea lilies - but they’re actually related to starfish - not a plant.”
“Is the sea filled with alotta animals that look like other things?”
lilies, glace cherries, stars, jellies, monsters constructed of hornwort and cats’ eyes and seashell and fishbone teeth
Ms Laudna giggles agreeingly
“Until we grow gills or construct a ship that can be airtight when it dives, I suppose we have to use our imaginations – or look at what washes up on the shores.”
Imogen can easily recall that gurgle, the leathery petrified cadaver that followed.
“Like a horse corpse?”
“Is this one of the lake’s stories?”
“Well, there are seahorses-”
“Excuse me?!”
A saddled horse with dorsal fins instead of a mane, opalescent scales, a tail like a mermaid-
“About as literal as you can picture them compared to everything else you have seen-” a reality a little crushing, though swiftly soothed by Ms Laudna’s head throwing back with the weight behind her laugh, birds scattering in flight and cawing in the distance - yet Imogen doesn’t feel patronised; though maybe she has endeared herself to her and it is a fine line, and one of Ms Laudna’s hands cradles her stomach as if pained by the exertion, her other resting on Imogen's forearm, gentle, intimate
dear
dear
A squawk calls from close by that is distinctly different to the caw of the gulls, and this gives both Imogen and her Lady pause, her hand removing contact from Imogen’s arm as she turns to the black-feathered bird that skips along the knobbly rocks and around the pools of water to walk towards her.
A crow, funnily enough.
Fittingly bizarre; outfitted in all black for a summer’s day on the beach.
It tilts its head and taps its beak on the weathered porous rock, Ms Laudna watching it closely before she takes a deep breath, throwing over the last uneaten oyster from its shell and at the crow’s feet.
“I suppose we better head back; Sorcha is a growing girl and I will not allow for her to miss a meal.”
Imogen nods, eyes darting between the Lady’s and the crow, as it tilts its own head back, forcing unchewed flesh down its throat.
“I would like for you to keep the fossil, if you would take it.”
Ms Laudna moves to stand, and Imogen hurries to offer her her free hand, to be in her grasp again.
“But you found it-”
“I did, so see it as a keepsake, if you will - should your cut not form a scar.”

Palm Root Stone, stone of grounding
🤎 Palm root stone, often referred to as petrified palm root, is a type of fossilized wood formed from ancient palm trees. Over millions of years, organic materials in the palm wood are replaced with minerals like quartz, calcite, or chalcedony, preserving the structure of the original wood. This process creates a stone that retains the texture and appearance of the palm root but is now a durable, mineral rich material.
🖤 It typically has earthy tones like beige, brown, black, and white, often with intricate patterns resembling wood grain or roots.
🤎 Palm root stone is found in areas where palm trees thrived millions of years ago. Common sources include regions in Indonesia, India, and the United States.
🖤 Palm root stone is believed to anchor the user to the Earth, fostering a sense of stability and balance. It is often used during meditation to center the mind and maintain focus.
🤎 As a fossilized material, it symbolizes transformation and growth, helping individuals adapt to life changes and overcome challenges. It inspires patience and perseverance by reminding the user of the slow, natural processes that lead to beautiful outcomes.
🖤 Palm root stone is associated with ancient knowledge and the Earth’s memories, making it a tool for connecting with ancestral energies or wisdom. It can be used to help unlock past life memories and lessons.
🤎 Many believe palm root stone creates a protective shield, guarding against negative energies and emotional instability. It can also provide a sense of safety during times of uncertainty or transition.
🖤 Palm root stone is often used to balance and activate the root chakra, the energy center responsible for grounding, survival instincts, and physical well being. This promotes a deeper connection to the physical world and a sense of security.
🤎 It is used in crystal grids, meditation, and energy work to align spiritual energy with physical reality. It's calming vibrations make it suitable for mindfulness practices and stress relief.
🖤 As a symbol of stability and growth, it helps in manifesting goals and intentions, especially those related to long term projects or personal development.

Scientists in southwest England have recently unveiled the discovery of the oldest fossilized forest known on Earth, dating back an astonishing 390 million years. This finding, detailed in a new study released by the University of Cambridge, surpasses the previous record held by a forest in the state of New York by 4 million years.
The fossils were found on high sandstone cliffs on the south side of the Bristol Channel, near Minehead, close to a holiday park. The trees, identified as Calamophyton, bore resemblance to palms, although their trunks were thin and hollow, devoid of leaves but with branch-like structures covering their branches. These trees ranged in height from 2 to 4 meters, losing branches as they grew.
The forest dates back to the Devonian Period, a critical time between 419 and 358 million years ago when life began to venture onto land. The trees played a vital role, trapping sediments in their root systems and stabilizing riverbanks and coastlines.
The study also highlights the rapid evolution of primitive forests. While the English forest is less diverse, consisting of only one tree type compared to New York's oldest forest, which housed a variety of species, it demonstrates how flora changed quickly in geological terms.
Additionally, these trees provided habitats for ground-dwelling invertebrates, leaving evidence of tracks and tail drags from primitive arthropods. Although the exact identity of these arthropods is unknown, their tracks and drags indicate the presence of sizable invertebrates, some reaching widths of 5 to 10 centimeters.
Scientists also noted that at the time, the cliffs where the fossils were found were connected to parts of what is now Germany and Belgium, rather than England. The study was published in the Journal of the Geological Society.
The discovery was described as "fortuitous" as the team was in the area investigating general geology and stumbled upon the fossils during a casual lunch in a field. This revelation not only emphasizes the importance of forests in stabilizing ancient ecosystems but also underscores the luck involved in such scientific discoveries.
🇧🇷
O estudo foi publicado no Journal of the Geological Society.

Rare 350 Million-Year-Old Tree Fossils Has Scientists ‘Gobsmacked’
Rare tree fossils preserved with their leaves have an architecture unlike any plant known today and represent the earliest evidence of smaller trees growing beneath the forest canopy.
Trees are believed to have originated hundreds of millions of years ago. Ever since, evidence of these ancient plant sentinels has been in short supply.
Now, a new discovery of uniquely 3D tree fossils has opened a window into what the world was like when the planet’s early forests were beginning to evolve, expanding our understanding of the architecture of trees throughout Earth’s history.
Five tree fossils buried alive by an earthquake 350 million years ago were found in a quarry in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, according to a study published Friday in the journal Current Biology. The authors said these new and unusual fossil trees not only bear a surprising shape reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss illustration, they reveal clues about a period of life on Earth of which we know little.
“They are time capsules,” said Robert Gastaldo, a paleontologist and sedimentologist who led the study, “literally little windows into deep-time landscapes and ecosystems.”
Coauthors Olivia King and Matthew Stimson unearthed the first of the ancient trees in 2017 while doing fieldwork in a rock quarry in New Brunswick. One of the specimens they discovered is among a handful of cases in the entire plant fossil record — spanning more than 400 million years — in which a tree’s branches and crown leaves are still attached to its trunk.
Few tree fossils that date back to Earth’s earliest forests have ever been found, according to Gastaldo. Their discovery helps fill in some missing pieces of an incomplete fossil record.
“There are only five or six trees that we can document, at least in the Paleozoic, that were preserved with its crown intact,” said Gastaldo, a professor of geology at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Most ancient tree specimens are relatively small, he noted, and often discovered in the form of a fossilized trunk with a stump or root system attached. For his colleagues to find a preserved tree that could have been 15 feet tall in its maturity with an 18-foot diameter crown left the paleontologist “gobsmacked.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ancient earthquake burial
The researchers excavated the first fossil tree about seven years ago, but it took another few years before four more specimens of the same plant were found in close proximity to one another. Dubbed “Sanfordiacaulis,” the newly identified species was named in honor of Laurie Sanford, the owner of the quarry where the trees were unearthed.
The forms taken by these previously unknown 350 million-year-old plants look somewhat like a modern-day fern or palm, per the study, despite the fact that those tree species didn’t appear until 300 million years later. But while the tops of ferns or palms as we know them boast few leaves, the most complete specimen of the newly discovered fossils has more than 250 leaves preserved around its trunk, with each partially preserved leaf extending around 5.7 feet (1.7 meters).
That fossil is encased in a sandstone boulder and roughly the size of a small car, according to Stimson, an assistant curator of geology and paleontology at the New Brunswick Museum.
The unique fossilization of the cluster of trees is likely due to a “catastrophic” earthquake-induced landslide that took place in an ancient rift lake, he said.
“These trees were alive when the earthquake happened. They were buried very quickly, very rapidly after that, at the bottom of the lake, and then the lake (went) back to normal,” Stimson said.
Finding complete fossil trees is rare and much less common than finding a complete dinosaur, according to Peter Wilf, a professor of geosciences and paleobotanist at Pennsylvania State University who was not involved with the study. Wilf noted via email that the “unusual” new fossil tree was a relic of a time period from which there are almost no tree fossils.
“The new fossils are a milestone in our understanding of how early forest structure evolved, eventually leading to the complex rainforest architectures that support most of Earth’s living biodiversity,” Wilf added.
Tumblr media
‘Very Dr. Seuss’
To King, a research associate at the New Brunswick Museum who found the group of fossils, the Sanfordiacaulis would have looked like something plucked straight out of Dr. Seuss’ most popular works.
“You know in ‘The Lorax,’ the trees have these big pom-poms at the top and narrow trunks? These probably have a similar structure. You have this massive crown at the top, and then it does narrow and paper into this very small trunk,” King said. “It’s a very Dr. Seuss-looking tree. It’s a weird and wonderful idea of what this thing could look like.”
But the reign of the Sanfordiacaulis was short-lived, the researchers said. “We do not see this architecture of plant again,” Stimson said. He noted that it grew in the early Carboniferous, a time period at the end of the Paleozoic Era when plants and animals were diversifying as they started to make their way from water to land.
Much of evolution is experimental, with success often measured by a species’ versatility, or ability to adapt to many different places and conditions. The peculiar set of tree fossils presents proof of a “failed experiment of science and evolution,” Stimson added. “We’re really starting to paint that picture as to what life was like 350 million years ago.”
Looking forward
Fossils such as the Sanfordiacaulis are not just useful in helping humans understand how life changed in the past, they can help scientists figure out where life on our planet might be headed next.
The existence of this particular species suggests that trees of the period were starting to occupy different ecological niches beyond what was previously understood, according to the researchers behind its discovery.
Gastaldo sees this as an indication that plants — much like early invertebrates — were experimenting with how they adapted to the environment. The earthquake that likely led to the trees’ fossilization also offers new geological evidence of what may have been occurring in Earth’s systems at the same moment in time.
“This is really the first evidence we have of (a tree) that would be between what grows on the ground and what would tower way above the ground,” Gastaldo said. “What else was there?”

President-elect Donald Trump pledges to prioritize domestic energy production, marking a departure from Biden’s administration, which faced criticism for its stance on fossil fuels.
Trump’s plans include easing drilling restrictions, expanding energy infrastructure, increasing natural gas exports, and ramping up drilling on federal lands, aiming to solidify the U.S. as the world’s leading oil producer.
Trump vows to undo climate policies, including re-exiting the Paris Climate Accord, revising emissions standards, and prioritizing fracking, despite its controversial nature.
Trump’s administration may face hurdles in fully overturning the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act, though it could limit its impact by tightening EV tax credits and imposing tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.
Trump’s pro-energy agenda aims to deliver affordable energy, strengthen the U.S. economy, and bolster geopolitical influence by reducing reliance on foreign oil imports.
President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to boosting oil and gas production, promising to unleash the full potential of America’s energy resources once he returns to the White House in January. Trump’s pledge to prioritize domestic energy production marks a sharp departure from the policies of the Biden administration, which has faced criticism from conservatives for its perceived hostility toward the fossil fuel industry.
Trump’s vision for the energy sector is rooted in his signature campaign slogan, "Drill, Baby, Drill," a phrase that harkens back to the Republican Party’s 2008 campaign and has become a rallying cry for his supporters. During his victory speech at the Palm Beach Convention Center in Florida, Trump reiterated his commitment to American energy independence, declaring, "Leave the oil to me. We have more liquid gold than any country in the world. We have more than Saudi Arabia. We have more than Russia."

News outlets must tell the full story on wildfires -- and that includes climate change.
Wildfires are growing more destructive, frequent, and far-reaching -- and climate change is a major reason why. Yet major media outlets are still failing to connect the dots.
This month, when smoke from massive Canadian wildfires blanketed the Midwest, coverage from Michigan Live, the Detroit Free Press, CBS News, and even a New York Times Instagram clip all mentioned the smoke -- but ignored the root cause: fossil fuel-driven climate change.
When Gladiator Actor Russell Crowe missed receiving his Best Actor award at the Golden Globes due to staying at home in Australia to protect his family from brushfires, he asked host Jennifer Aniston to read this statement for him instead:
"Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy, and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way we all have a future."
Australian-born actress Cate Blanchett picked up Crowe’s theme as she presented another award at the same ceremony:
"I wanted to do a special call-out to the volunteer firefighters who have been at the centre of battling the climate disaster that is facing Australia. And of course, when one country faces a climate disaster, we all face a climate disaster, so we're in it together, so thank you very much."
The stars are getting the connection, but the local and national news media, and the general public, are not. We need to raise the alarm and ensure that the media giants do their part to get the word out!
Tell major outlets like ABC, NBC, CBS, and The New York Times to name climate change in wildfire coverage, feature experts on climate and fire science, and explain how burning fossil fuels fuels fire risk.
ADD YOUR NAME https://actionnetwork.org/forms/tell-media-outlets-to-connect-wildfires-to-climate-change?source=group-hd&referrer=group-hd&redirect=https://secure.actblue.com/donate/hdc_expose_media_silence&link_id=2&can_id=74ba3a4560729f61c8d1785f46f653c8&email_referrer=email_2784753&&&email_subject=media-must-tell-the-truth-about-wildfires-and-fossil-fuels&refcodeEmailReferrer=email_2784753
A recent Media Matters analysis found that just 6% of TV news wildfire coverage mentioned climate change at all. And there’s nothing new about the media’s omission of how climate change is causing the worst fire seasons ever. Back in 2016, The New York Times ran a detailed story on Alberta’s Fort McMurray wildfire and never mentioned the climate crisis.
At the same Golden Globes mentioned above, Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix added:
"It's really nice that so many people have come up and sent their well-wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that... We don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards sometimes or back, please. I'll try to do better and I hope you will too."
Many of us don’t have to worry about cancelling our next private jet flight, but even reducing or eliminating our regular air travel can help, as Music For Airports ambient music pioneer Brian Eno has chosen to do:
“There’s a revolution going on: the biggest and broadest social movement in human history. It grows out of two realizations: that the planet -- and with it human civilization -- is in danger of collapse from a rapidly changing climate. And that it’s us -- us people -- who have to do something about it.”
Working with Eno’s organization, EarthPercent, Coldplay developed an app to help people plan low-emissions travel. The band even implemented a special dance floor for their concerts that collects the fans’ energy and sends it to the venue to help power the event!
Silence about the science behind raging wildfires misleads the public and stalls action. Without understanding the role climate change plays, people can’t grasp the urgency -- or the solutions. We can’t solve what we don’t name.
Wildfires are signs of a planet in crisis. Demand news coverage that tells the whole truth.
Thank you for helping to pioneer a world where wildfires and climate change can both be brought under control, for the good of all who call the Earth home.
