Is there a feminist guideline in the era of Fourth Wave Feminism? Beyond my own definition, that women and men are of equal value? What are the parameters under the shaming umbrella? Can you call out another woman for behavior you consider “inappropriate”? I’m thinking about this a lot as I find myself in the belly of deja vu. I am a feminist of the Third Wave, when so much of what propelled us was reclaiming—words, fashion, sex, like that. We had the liberation, the Second Wave feminists rallied for that. We didn’t have the ERA, and still don’t, and that will be an ongoing battle. In so many ways, Third Wave Feminists were aligned. We were pissed, pissed, pissed. Clarence Thomas had gotten over on Anita Hill, a case so clear to us as women. Rebecca Walker, in her rally to us, said: “So I write this as a plea to all women, especially women of my generation: Let Thomas’ confirmation serve to remind you, as it did me, that the fight is far from over. Let this dismissal of a woman’s experience move you to anger. Turn that outrage into political power. Do not vote for them unless they work for us. Do not have sex with them, do not break bread with them, do not nurture them if they don’t prioritize our freedom to control our bodies and our lives. I am not a post-feminism feminist. I am the Third Wave”—and in re-reading her rally, it occurs to me that we’re in familiar territory.” We are in familiar territory again. My suggestions for alignment are the obvious: Let’s not be divisive. Let’s not point fingers at each other. Let’s rally together, let’s be aligned, let’s come up with concrete structure for us to thrive as women and as humans who need health insurance.
