007 Fest 2023 / Original Characters Day

James Bond's Cleaning Lady Fran.

Fran comes to this London flat once a week to tidy up, dust, mop, and clean the kitchen and bath.

She's a 5-foot-1, middle-aged Irish woman with greying red hair.

She works for a third party contracted with MI6. Can't have unvetted housekeepers walking into a double oh's flat.

Fran knows how James Bond lives, when he lives here. Most of the time she guesses nobody has been inside since the last time she was there. And the time before that. And before that.

He reads naval history books and drinks too much. The TV isn't actually hooked up to anything but a thumb drive. The walls are pristine - nothing has ever been hung there. There are too many eggs in the fridge, but when he's here, he cracks just as many for his meals. And Fran wonders if he'll ever really unpack his moving boxes.

His nightstand has trinkets on it in a clear box. Souvenirs, maybe gifts. She wonders who buys him things, this man she's never met. There is a keyring - or maybe it's jewelry - fashioned as a knot. There's also what appears to be the world's tiniest radio. And there is... animal fur? No, a lock of short, white, human hair, tied together with red string.

Fran makes up stories about Bond in her head. It makes her tasks go by faster.

Day 245a: Saturday September 2, 2023 - "Firsty Game at 35,000 feet"

Id been prepping William for the past week about going to San Francisco, and we've even been playing the "flowers in your hair" song at bedtime. And while he easily mastered the four syllable locale, and knew we'd be meeting Mommy there, it wasn't until the last couple of days that I also had to start prepping him for one other big surprise - we'd be getting there, on Mama's Flight. Yes, thats right - the big blue airplane that Mama is always on, is the one we're taking to San Fran Cis Co. Whoa. I am not even sure how much of that he really grasped, as I told him its like when Daddy's in his office and you can't come in. And so as I bustled my way through security, gate checking the car seat in San Diego, I nervously braced for what was coming at me next hoping that it would all go perfectly smooth, with no meltdowns and grateful that it would just be a one hour experiment flight. And William gave us his answer - no problem. He settled in to his distractions, and didn't complain for Mama, even as she did her PAs. And when it was time to collect trash, she came and got him and they did it together, him smiling all the way, leveling up in so many ways. When we landed in San Francisco, he got to meet all the crew, including the pilots and be wrapped in their affection, nurturing that special feeling that he was really some big shot and that he got to do something really special today. And while we had some fun planned for our time in San Francisco, the Firsty Game was bagged by the time we landed - on this overnight, the big first was William's first time riding on Mama's flight. He passed with flying colors and earned his airplane snacks.

He'll grow up with a love for air travel that he won't even remember when and where it started, but the photos will be precious reminders from his first big year of ramble where he leveled up from a lapbaby, to now getting out and helping clear the cabin alongside his mama. Its a special thing to be his wingman on his little magically journey through the world, and to play this game with him, putting a 6th overnight on the board.

The Gray House, a Civil War spy drama series that is being produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, is the latest high-profile project to land an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA.

The project managed to secure an interim agreement – by which the producers agree to the terms of the guild’s last counter-offer to the AMPTP – despite having international distribution through Paramount Global.

The actors guild has now handed out over 60 interim agreements to movies and series since the walkout earlier this month. Apple TV+’s Tehran became the most high-profile series to land one, after films such as The Watchers, which has involvement from Warner Bros. Discovery’s New Line, were also added to the list as well as Glenn Close’s The Summer Book and A24 films Mother Mary and I Dream Of Unicorns.

Paramount Global Content Distribution, which is run by Dan Cohen, is set to distribute six-part series The Gray House, which does not currently have a U.S. network or streamer attached.

The Gray House tells the story of the three women General Ulysses S. Grant credited as helping the North win the Civil War. It focuses on the unsung women who turned the tide of the American Civil War in favor of the North. A Richmond Socialite and her daughter, a formerly enslaved African-American, and a courtesan build the first successful female spy ring, operating right under the noses of the Confederate High Command. They risk life and liberty to help win the war and preserve American Democracy.

The series is based on an original script by Leslie Greif and Darrell Fetty, and Oscar-nominated John Sayles. Oscar-nominated Roland Joffe is directing.

The series has been filming in Eastern Europe.

Costner is exec producing via his Territory Pictures banner with Rod Lake and Howard Kaplan producing. Freeman is producing alongside his producing partner Lori McCreary via their Revelations Entertainment shingle and Greif is producing via his Big Dreams Entertainment alongside Alex Kerr.

Who gets an interim agreement is a complicated question, particularly as some of these projects seem to have ties to AMPTP companies such as Paramount Global.

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland told Deadline, “It goes to reflect the complexity and the business relationships and structures in this industry.”  

He added, “If there are AMPTP connections to the project, then [waivers] won’t be [granted]. That’s the big-picture answer. Everyone needs to be investigated and evaluated individually because obviously the question of ‘Are there AMPTP fingerprints or connections to the project?’ is a very specific question. That means it takes a few days to a week depending on volume, maybe a little more for us to evaluate whether a project can receive an interim agreement.”

These people keep proving me right. I knew Fran Drescher could not be trusted and neither can her little minion Crabtree-Ireland. Some of these productions knew they could get away with this by filming in Europe and by the way, per Insider Hollywood, including many publications like Deadline and Variety lamenting back in 22 about 'a precious American Western being shot in New Zealand' what the fuck do I look like anticipating from two already wealthy actors and their European flavored Civil War drama? Screw Costner and Freeman for this.

I really feel a deep dread for the Hollywood workers striking. They might have been set up with AMPTP ringers on the SAG-AFTRA board.

October 1, 2023 - Happy 97th Birthday to my Mom!!!

We are back in Michigan and once again we have super Internet, so I will be posting things I wrote over the last week. We have had an amazing month of travel and learning. Again, I will say that travel is the best education a person can get. Get out there and experience the lives of people you don't know. It may feel uncomfortable - but that feeling only means you are growing. You will be much richer for it. Here is where I left off....

Sept 23, 2023

Today we started our day with a city tour of Oviedo.  This place was hopping last night well into the morning.  We have a beautiful corner room with two window balconies.  This time our windows overlooked the city and all its activities. 

 We heard rock and roll and a drum choir but the most surprising sounds were the bagpipers.

We learned that anywhere the Celts were - and let’s face it they were in a LOT of places, bagpiping exists today. 

These pipers do not play Amazing Grace nor any other Scottish associated tune.  The play Spanish music and these pipers in particular play Asturais Spanish music.  I HAD NO IDEA.  Again - with my motto - You don’t know what you don’t know.

The first part of the tour was on the bus.  We saw different parts of this very active city and we learned that the Crown Prince - or in the current case - the Crown Princess is given the total of Princess of Asturias.  It follows the same kind of thing as the Prince or Princess of Wales - will someday rule Great Britain.

We saw another major work of the very famous architect Santigo Calatrava. (and according to our trip leader Fran, “a horrible human being”)  

It might be the ugliest building I have ever seen - BUT it is one you will not forget and it is certainly recognizable from the sky or from a very high vista - which takes me to our next event.  

A bus ride to the top of Mount Naranco  high above Oviedo with the bonus gift - another statue of Jesus, Rio de Janeiro style. “Monument al Sagrado Corazón de Jesus”. 

What stunning views!!!  From there we visited two additional building ruins, the first San Miguel de Lillo built in the 9th century, and this is what is left of that very large church.

 The brick work surrounding the ruin is the footprint of the original building. 

We walked down  the road to discover this:   

Built by Ramiro I (842–50), Alfonso II’s successor – is an exquisite example of Asturias’ unique pre-Romanesque architecture. It marks an advance in Asturian art: an outstanding decorative feature iimitating rope used in its columns.  Very cool!

We returned to Oviedo and did a city walk.  It is very hopping city - especially the Saturday after St. Matthew’s Fiesta.  But we meandered this way and that way from one square to another.  In each square was a statue marking something that happened here and would be important to the citizens of the area.  I liked this one.

Since she was a girl until she died in her mid-90s this woman brought her milk to market.

Mark liked this one - so much that he let this guy who owned a shop on this square of more than 75 years - use his headphones.  Mark’s a nice guy!

In the square closest to us and home to the giant-ass party is the home of The Cathedral of San Salvador of Oviedo.

It displays an array of architectural styles, from Pre-Romanesque to Baroque  including Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance parts.  There is a reason for this  and it is called REMODELING.  Built first in 780 CE the first remodel and enlargement was in 810 CE.  Then in the 1100s - much was torn down and changed.The Cloisters were added in the 1200s and the bell town in the 1300s.  But the bell tower didn’t look good with the front now - so in the 1400s the entrance was “improved”. You get the picture.  Frankly I couldn’t NOT keep up.

BUT - and here is why it was so important to keep this place looking great - it is the home to some of the most sacred relics of Christendom.  The chief feature of the cathedral is the "Camara Santa", with its venerable relics. A Bishop in the 12th century wrote that the Agate Box, was a coffer made by the disciples of the Apostles  and containing the most precious relics of the Holy City, was taken from Jerusalem to Africa, and after residing in several locations was finally placed at Oviedo by Alfonso II. In the 16th century, Bishop Cristóbal de Sandoval y Rojas wished to open it, but could not, being overcome with religious fear. Yah-yah...

BUT the real big deal is this: The Sudarium of Oviedo, or Shroud of Oviedo, is a bloodstained piece of cloth measuring c. 84 x 53 cm (33 x 21 inches) The Sudarium ( Latin for sweat cloth) is thought to be the cloth that was wrapped around the head of Jesus Christ after he died as described in the Bible.

This is believed by many to be the actual thing and as such people make a pilgrimage to see this box.

On 14 March 1075, King Alfonso VI, his sister and Rodrigo Diaz Vivar (El Cid) opened the chest after days of fasting. The event was recorded on a document preserved in the Capitular Archives at the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo. The king had the oak chest covered in silver with an inscription which reads, "The Sacred Sudarium of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

We had our farewell lunch with food that just kept coming.  All traditional Asturias foods.

The afternoon was ours to do as we wished and Mark and headed to the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias.  The place is huge and is actually 5 buildings converted into one.  Each building is different and marks a new time period.  The truth is that I know a few Spanish artists but not many.  The usual suspects, Goya, El Greco, Velazquez, Dali, Murillo, Picasso and Miro - to name a few - but OMG - the talent was incredible and of course not all the artists were Spanish..  There were so many artists there that I could identify the period - but had never heard of the name.  I took some photos of my favorites and I will try to watch for other works by the same talented people.

Mark and I met up with Joe and had a drink on the square before headed to our room to pack.  Tomorrow we will end this tour and head to Bretagne, France with our friends for a week.  Our pace will be different but I expect to learn plenty.

We have been so lucky with the weather and with no days left, I just going to say it.  We have had rain periodically but it delayed nothing and kept us from doing not one thing.  On the day we drove to the top of Mount Naraco the sun was shining and everything was bright and clear.  Had this been scheduled for yesterday we could have seen nothing.  I’m not sure if it the rabbit’s foot I wear around my neck or the four leaf clover I keep in my wallet or my voodoo chants before bed - but who cares.  Something is working….  (Of course none of my “charming” story is true - but it is true that we have had amazing weather.)

I has been a real pleasure to travel with this group of friends.  How lucky are we to have a chance to see the world with like-minded people.  Then you put in two amazing trip leaders that this trip gets and A+ from me.

On Air Fest Adds Headliners to LA Annex Podcast Festival

Comic-Con began in 1970 when a small group of comics, movie, and science fiction fans from San Diego put on an event attended by just 300 people. In 2023, about 150,000 people attended the event. It’s a dopamine overload for those who attend as fans and a marketing bonanza for TV, film, comic book, and merchandise producers.

Podcasting needs a Comic Con. The medium already has several terrific live events that draw podcasters and fans from around the world. Podcast Movement, PodFest Expo, and On Air Fest, to name just a few

I envision Pod Con as a four-day event, with fans cosplaying as Ira Glass, Kara Swisher, Audie Cornish, or Wendy Zukerman. Joe Rogan fans could scream at attendees about getting any vaccine, and then hand out pamphlets with a curated list of conspiracy theories.

Until that day, we have the On Air LA Annex that will bring together the vanguard of storytellers, audio creatives, and inspired listeners who are shaping the culture of sound. The event runs from November 1 through November 4.

As the annual West Coast edition of New York City’s influential On Air Fest, this year’s event will take place at multiple locations including KCRW’s Santa Monica studio and dublab in University Park, pushing podcasting further into the future and revealing new answers to the question of “what’s next?” (WIRED).

From live recordings and performances to exclusive premieres and innovative installations, the lineup will showcase both emerging and established voices across an eclectic schedule and an additional wave of headliners that are still to be announced. Find tickets here and more details below.

On Wednesday, November 1st at KCRW’s state-of-the-art Annenberg Performance Studio, the festival kicks off with the On Air Business Summit, a by-invitation gathering of industry leadership for urgent dialogues on the growth and evolution of podcasts. Then, the doors open to everyone for an evening that features:

KCRW’s Lost Notes: A sneak preview of the revelatory series’ highly-anticipated return, unspooling the real stories behind LA’s soul music scene with co-hosts Novena Carmel (Morning Becomes Eclectic) and Michael Barnes.

Let’s Make a Horror: Part improv comedy, part horror film, and all plot twist, this interactive rendition of the acclaimed show from CBC Podcasts and Kelly&Kelly will take the stage for a brand new, spooky story right on the heels of Halloween. Comedians Ryan Bell, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez will be joined by a special guest to be announced.

On Thursday, November 2nd at KCRW, the second evening of On Air Fest will shock, entice, and enlighten attendees, with sessions from: Spooked: From the creators of Snap Judgment, presented by PRX and KQED, comes Spooked. Host and Snap Studios founder Glynn Washington opens the second night of On Air Fest LA Annex with a live performance. This installment of the popular paranormal podcast will reveal a true-life tale of the supernatural.

Spooked explores the Shadowlands — daring listeners to confront the unknown. Be afraid… Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso: The revered host returns to On Air Fest for a live taping of the intimate, in-depth interview podcast that has welcomed such greats as Carol Burnett, David Byrne, Fran Lebowitz, Lorde, Oscar Isaac, Padma Lakshi, Questlove, Quinta Brunson, Tom Hanks, and many others.

On Air LA Annex will reveal more details, headliners and exclusive first-listens throughout the coming weeks, as well as the full lineup for the On Air Open House on Saturday, November 4th. Hosted at dublab, the day-long event is free, open to the public and dedicated to celebrating the talents of LA’s creator community. In addition to live radio streams and performances, a happy hour presented by ESPN 30 for 30, DJ sets and more, it will include the debut of an unprecedented exhibition. Following the introduction of On Air Fest’s first-ever, multi-room installation at the beginning of 2023, this new collection of original listening experiences will see guests moving between different stations to interact with the inaugural collection of On Air Official Selects.

Launching as part of this year’s On Air LA Annex, On Air Official Selects is an open, global call for short-form audio stories. Between now and October 4th, any creative can submit an original piece under 10 minutes in length, with an emphasis on experimentation and boundary-pushing approaches. This feedback loop makes On Air Fest unique.

A panel of leaders, tastemakers and judges — including Alejandro Cohen (Executive Director, dublab), Gina Delvac (Head of Podcast Audience Lab, KCRW), Marshall Lewy (Chief Content Officer, Wondery), Ben Adair (Founder and Executive Producer, Western Sound), Christy Gressman (Vice President, Podcasts, Topic Studios) and more — will award 10 works with an honorarium, as well as the opportunity to showcase their piece for all the attendees of On Air Open House. Belgian gives second life to Ukrainian war rubble

Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science Hubert Rahier (VUB) and Dutch scientists have developed a technology to recycle old concrete into new building material.

Hubert Rahier was surprised when a Ukrainian company approached him asking if he was interested in processing war debris. In collaboration with our northern neighbours, the professor of chemistry and materials science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel developed a technology for recycling old concrete into new binding and building material.

“Originally we wanted to develop a technology to recycle concrete in a sustainable way in Belgium and the Netherlands, that have been struggling with a huge mountain of (concrete) waste for years,” he says. “The problem was that Belgian and Dutch concrete is not composed in the same way. That is why we had to devise a system in which both types of concrete can be recycled in a sustainable manner. After long brainstorming, we were finally able to develop a grinding technology that can process both Belgian and Dutch, and by extension even most European concrete waste. That broad field of application makes it interesting, of course.”

Boy's dream

Rahier says he didn't have to think long before answering the Ukrainian question. “You don't develop a technology like this in a few weeks, it takes years. Even before my PhD, during my master's thesis, I have already started researching how waste materials can be used to make new building materials. Of course you hope that something like this will be adopted in other circumstances.”

“Coincidentally, my wife and I also host a Ukrainian family at home. In that way we had someone in the house to do the translation. This made the negotiations with the Ukrainian company a little smoother.”

It is no coincidence that he was already researching waste materials as a student. "I've been an environmentalist since I was 14. My interest in the environment has only grown since then.”

Recycling technology makes a childhood dream come true. “Absolutely. During the recycling process, all materials – such as river pebbles, gravel, sand and cement – are removed from the concrete. This enables us to make new materials. We therefore try to lose as little as possible  and not to extract any additional raw materials from nature. In addition, the microwave oven and the crusher that we use for the recycling process run entirely on green energy. We hope to be able to close the material cycle in this way.”

40 tons per hour

A crusher can grind about 40 tons of concrete per hour. At Rutte[1], the Dutch company where the technology is already being used today, they currently process about 200 tons per day. “That seems like a lot, but make no mistake,” says Rahier. “There is a lot of concrete in a building. For a large apartment building you have to grind during several months.”

The intention is to start the project in Ukraine as soon as the machines are available. “We hope they will be ready for large-scale deployment in the spring of 2024.”
