Since I’ve been making posts about American/ British entitlement towards Ireland, I thought I’d talk about this video here.

I am a student at this college. It’s a big tourist attraction for many reasons, but the main one being that the book of Kells is kept here. I am also from Kells itself, but Dublin having the book and not Kells is a whole other issue.

So this protest that’s been happening over the the past few weeks is in response to the college once again raising rents for student accommodation to astronomical rates. That being when rent in Dublin (and Ireland as a whole) is already unliveable. You’d find cheaper rent off student accommodation, but it’s hardly easy to find places like this. As well as this, the majority of the student accommodation isn’t even on campus to begin with. Most are about a 45 minute luas journey away. So what the fuck are you paying for?

This protest is necessary. It’s been a long time coming. Time and time again they prioritise tourists over us. Buildings are old and falling apart, equipment isn’t functional, accessibility is god awful. I know this because I am disabled and use a rollator, but I can’t even use it on campus most days because there’s simply no ramps/ elevators in some buildings.

In one of my lectures last week we were in one of the old buildings. We had a lot of content to cover, but of course the projector wasn’t working. The professor spent fourty minutes trying to get the computer/ projector to work, but to no avail. So we have a whole lecture to catch up on! All of this while I was looking out the window at this atrocity:

A new building for tourists! Yay!

They’ve been building new school buildings for years, but of course instead of finishing them, they’ll spend their time and money on the tourists. I’m not even having an exam in one of my modules because they told the professor that there simply isn’t enough room to host our class for the exam. And it would be “too expensive” to book a venue… it’s only a class of about thirty. He had written a whole exam and we were under the impression we’d have one, but now it’s just continuous assessment I guess!

So you have to understand why we’re not exactly jumping for joy for the tourists. There are hundreds on campus everyday, just generally being annoying and entitled. And yes DISCLAIMER; not all tourists, not all Americans/ British people, blah, blah. But from my experience, you do encounter some obnoxious people everyday.

So that’s why they blocked entrance to the book of Kells. That’s why it’s disgusting for the tourists to be arguing with them and demanding entrance. For once we just want our college to prioritise us! So yeah we will revoke your entitlement, because we are the ones who study here, we are the ones who have to LIVE here.

My landlord just upped my rent by the most he ever has because of “inflation” wtf inflation doesn’t change the cost of your mortgage.

Water rate hasn’t gone up.

Since I’ve been renting here he’s gone from working a very busy full time job and driving an old little Mazda and living in house down the street to early retirement, moved to one of the richer parts of town in a huge house and driving an Audi. Fucking “inflation” my ass

Mind you I don’t have a functioning sink in my bathroom and haven’t in over a decade. My fridge that he was totally going to replace after I moved in is still sitting in my kitchen with busted shelves and either being too cold or too warm no middle ground. Windows that don’t close all the way that he was totally going to replace ? Yep still not done just like the fridge over a decade later

I could go on and on. He’s literally fixed one thing the entire time I lived here. Replaced a toilet that had been leaking for I think 3-4 years possibly longer. I kept mentioning it but he kept saying oh ok he’ll get to it but didn’t bother until it became a serious issue

But yeah I can’t really afford to move so…..

But what an asshole move to raise the rent at the start of heating season because I can really afford more rent and the outrageous costs for heating that have gone up like mad

And of course I was just finally feeling like life had become somewhat stable for me heading towards better. Every fucking time I feel ok there’s something that ruins it

Guess who's got a new apartment?? It me! 🥰🏡 If all goes according to plan I get the keys on April 1st (not a joke hopefully lol) and then I'll do a bit of light renovating first before I move in! It's a little bigger than my current place and right on the edge of the park, so plenty of greenery and no more downstairs restaurant and city noise and most importantly NO MORE UPSTAIRS NEIGHBOURS since it's on the top floor 😭 I can't wait to sleep, holy shit

The rental prices in regional areas are such a joke. When I moved here I got a 3br house for 360/w and now that I'm moving out they're advertising it for 430/w even though there's a gaping hole in the lounge room ceiling, severe water damage, structural issues that have gone unaddressed for the three years we've been here and the photos they've put on the listing are so old they're only showing the external views even though that's not what the house looks like anymore.

So not only is the quality of the housing quite poor, they're hiking up the price to more than half of minimum wage's weekly income. It's really terrible like how are people who live in regional areas who get paid a lot less on average than people in cities meant to afford that really. It's perpetuating poverty.

i want to move sooo bad because frankly my living situation is not very slay (for example, no hot water except in the shower) but also i would genuinely rather kill myself than go through the process of finding a new place to live again. so i guess i'll just suffer

Yes.

In this day and age of there being credits for the drivers, the accountants, the caterers...why would you remove the actual artists working on the film if you didn't want to hide the fact that you had digital visual effects artists AS WELL as all the practical effects people that have been so hyped on this production. The bonus for American film bros that sit through the credits...they won't have to read a list of foreign names while the end music plays...
