Since I’ve been making posts about American/ British entitlement towards Ireland, I thought I’d talk about this video here.
I am a student at this college. It’s a big tourist attraction for many reasons, but the main one being that the book of Kells is kept here. I am also from Kells itself, but Dublin having the book and not Kells is a whole other issue.
So this protest that’s been happening over the the past few weeks is in response to the college once again raising rents for student accommodation to astronomical rates. That being when rent in Dublin (and Ireland as a whole) is already unliveable. You’d find cheaper rent off student accommodation, but it’s hardly easy to find places like this. As well as this, the majority of the student accommodation isn’t even on campus to begin with. Most are about a 45 minute luas journey away. So what the fuck are you paying for?
This protest is necessary. It’s been a long time coming. Time and time again they prioritise tourists over us. Buildings are old and falling apart, equipment isn’t functional, accessibility is god awful. I know this because I am disabled and use a rollator, but I can’t even use it on campus most days because there’s simply no ramps/ elevators in some buildings.
In one of my lectures last week we were in one of the old buildings. We had a lot of content to cover, but of course the projector wasn’t working. The professor spent fourty minutes trying to get the computer/ projector to work, but to no avail. So we have a whole lecture to catch up on! All of this while I was looking out the window at this atrocity:
Tumblr media
A new building for tourists! Yay!
They’ve been building new school buildings for years, but of course instead of finishing them, they’ll spend their time and money on the tourists. I’m not even having an exam in one of my modules because they told the professor that there simply isn’t enough room to host our class for the exam. And it would be “too expensive” to book a venue… it’s only a class of about thirty. He had written a whole exam and we were under the impression we’d have one, but now it’s just continuous assessment I guess!
So you have to understand why we’re not exactly jumping for joy for the tourists. There are hundreds on campus everyday, just generally being annoying and entitled. And yes DISCLAIMER; not all tourists, not all Americans/ British people, blah, blah. But from my experience, you do encounter some obnoxious people everyday.
So that’s why they blocked entrance to the book of Kells. That’s why it’s disgusting for the tourists to be arguing with them and demanding entrance. For once we just want our college to prioritise us! So yeah we will revoke your entitlement, because we are the ones who study here, we are the ones who have to LIVE here.

This is not at all a new take on life here in the US of A however I feel as though I will peel my skin off if I don’t say it;
People are seeing death as a valid option to the current state of the world + the future and now I am fully understanding why.
There is no more ‘village’. There are no reliable social safety nets installed that are realistic or easy to access. You H A V E to drive EVERYWHERE if you’re even able to drive. If your area has a bus it has to fight on the road with every other driver. To get 9 miles away from point A to B takes 2 hour out of your day. No one is hiring or they are paying minimum wages for you to run their whole circus operation damn near by yourself. Average 1 bedroom apartments are $1.1k a month for 500 sqf and if you SOMEHOW get a roommate and get them to agree to split rent and utilities then y’all are going to battle for personal space. A 2 bed is out of the question bc there is no way in hell that you can save anything if you are spending more then half of your wages on rent. You want to go out and have a sense of what it means to be fulfilled as a human? Don’t even dream about it, you have your bills coming up.
Get a second or 3rd job? Wait… you were able to find one? They didn’t ghost? Lucky you; now you are better off & you can now sleep knowing that the 2nd job will be able to pay for the gas ($3+/gal), insurance (3X what it used to be but still making you open up ur wallet before they step in), and your car note! (Wayyy too much for a used).
What is fun? What are get togethers? What is a ‘cheap meal’? What’s a bucket list? What’s a vacation? What’s a hobby? Wait, you can afford to replace items and not get anxiety over it? You can afford more then an arm full of groceries?? Will you be able to retire by the time you’re 60 with enough money in the bank to not just exist, but to do the things you’ve always wanted to do during those working decades? What will elder and death care look like? Will your children be able to not live in poverty?
We as young people are seeing death as a valid option because we know we will NEVER see an adult life like those before us prior to the 90’s. Starting a family or adding on to your family will put you in poverty. Buying a house if you’re fortunate enough will put you in poverty. Renting will put you in poverty. Working more jobs will put you in poverty. Having a car will put you into poverty, not having one will keep you from ever getting one. We will just work and work to never ever have anything to show for it. This is not the lifestyle that I’d doom more life to do for the rest of their lives. Something’s gotta change sooner rather then later and it’s gotta be grass roots. We have to be willing to break some rules to get to where we need to be.
Things. Must. Change.

German politic comedy, insane rent prices in Munich and Sherlock. Pure Gold. 😆
Sherlock - his hardest case: the impossible flat hunt
Best part is the rooftop scene.
Sherlock: "Where is the flat you wanted to show me? This is only a rooftop."
Moriarty: "Well you said 1800 cold* it's cold at night here. For 1,8k your client can throw a mattress here on the ground."
Sherlock: "You mad cutthroat. There has to be a affordable flat in this city"
Moriarty: "Omg Holmes in what times do you live? Big City and affordable flat cancel each other out. Like Gottschalk** and retirement"
*cold rent means in germany basic rent. No insurance, utilities, taxes etc.
** Thomas Gottschalk is a german TV presenter who will never retire. Like never ever. 😅

Calling it a “shift towards renting” is wrong, we are being forced into renting by the established. What is canada doing to help out renters? Tying credit to rent payment so you extra cant get a home. We just had a rent crisis, they had to ban evictions during covid then just let everyone go back to struggling. And now what do they do? Help the landlords.
Do something, stop saying money has been put into building more homes while the problem is landlords purchasing those homes to rent out.
Actually regulate being a landlord. Dont let just anyone have multiple properties. Remove these bullshit loopholes designed by the rich that only benefit the rich. Let us actually fucking live and feel safe in the homes we live in.
Listen to him talk about “making your rent matter” and count towards your credit, while people cannot afford their rent, thus making late payments. Why do we need to barter for a good price when a landlord just wont accept someone who does so. The more the renter has to take action the more likely the landlord will want them gone. We need someone to stand up for us and hold them accountable. We need jobs that pay equal to the cost of living, we need the cost of rent regulated in a way we can SEE.
Having a landlord is exactly the same thing as having a boss that you also have to pay, it is not a service. Punish them for overpricing rent Instead of punishing the poor.

Hey y'all's in the state of Kansas DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, RENT FROM EUCALYPTUS REALTY or ANY Property owned by LEW MCGINNIS
First, my experience with them;
I had a 6 month lease filed with an apartment building that ended in October 2021, I signed the paper confirming I would be out in october, I moved out in october 2021. I had an eviction filed against me November 4th, 2021. I just found out they succeeded in filing an eviction against me. I was not contacted regarding this at all, even though they had my active phone number on file and had called me after I moved regarding paperwork on an old roommate who'd moved earlier in the year. They filed an eviction on me, for an apartment I was not living in, after my lease had ended, and made zero attempt at contacting me. I did not find out until attempting to rent a house with a friend. Noone has answered the phone for me, or for the new renting agency, and my application is going to be denied. All because of an eviction filed against me. For an apartment I did not live in anymore. After my lease had ended. What should I do now? I would try to pay anything they're trying to charge if I could get them on the phone. It's not like I can fight it in court, they already won. Everything I'm reading just says "ask the owner nicely to get it removed" and I don't think that's possible now given what I've found since looking into them.
Because HERE'S what I found after a little digging;
The owner is a real estate person based out of Oklahoma, and owns multiple properties in Topeka, Emporia, and Wichita (I found the number 35 in Topeka, but I couldn't verify that or tell you how many in the other two cities) . I'm finding all these news artical now about how he's filed the most evictions out of any realitor in my county, how his properties have major upkeep issues (my apartment had a hole through the glass back door that was never fixed, and I have video I can dig up of a leak in my ceiling from the apartment above me pouring water into my bathroom multiple times a day. Not leaking, or dropping, POURING, and it only got fixed cause I was lucky enough to run into the handyman and speak with him myself, and I'm even luckier he was there to run into) how he's had mold outbreaks in both Topeka and Emporia due to maintenance neglect, literal tax evasion on those Emporia properties , bribing tenants for good reviews in Wichita (he later refused to pay), rent hikes (the whole reason I didn't renew my lease is because of a 100$ rent hikes + new fees), bedbug and roach issues among other things.
This feels completely unfixable. I'm going to have to grovle at this man's feet to fix the fact that HE EVICTED ME FROM AN EMPTY APARTMENT AFTER MY LEASE HAD ENDED and even then it's not gaurinteeed.
Y'all's should boost this cause I don't want anyone else in ks to get stuck dealing with this shit
Don't rent from Eucalyptus Realty or Lew McGinnus

It would be great if the government could just put a cap on rent prices. Like how hard would it be to tell landlords that no, they can't charge almost $2k a month for a tiny 1 bed 1 bath apartment while also increasing rent by a couple hundred dollars each year?
How hard would it be to make rent affordable so that there aren't so many homeless or housing insecure people? We have more than enough houses and apartments. There should not be people living on the streets. But because landlords are greedy and the government doesn't give a shit about poor people, landlords can literally charge whatever the hell they want and force their tenants to pay or else get evicted. There are no checks, no balances, only corporate greed.

Another story typical of MSM, no joining the dots between 1,000,000 immigrants coming into Canada yearly and the price of real estate or the results of quantitative easing on interest rates for years, and then sudden rate changes. These prices are insane, and if people can't live then they will revolt against the system, it's happened many times before. Things go south when one side wins too much. The only winner in this story as usual is the banks.

something rubs me the wrong way about how shitty little apartments are around $1,500-$2,000 in my little college town you if you want to share with only 2 roommates instead of 4, but there are 3-4 different senior-only, 55+ living communities sitting EMPTY with a rent of $700 (with a max cap at $1,000) for a 3bd3br HOUSE. almost like.... the generation that did this in the first place..... are making sure they have a nice place to live that isn't affected by the absolutely astronomical rent they're forcing on us......... even if they aren't actually ready to live there yet

I found that there are still some affordable housing options online. But, you can't go through Zillow or Apartments.com.
The most affordable housing options I found were actually on Craigslist.

Getting extraordinarily nervous. Mid month sales are poor. It's so frustrating seeing the light but not reaching it yet. I feel like I'm so close to not needing to plead for sales but I'm not there yet.

What kind of dystopian hellscape have we stepped into where $1400 a fortnight rent (not including utilities) for an old, crusty 2 person house garners a lot of interest and is considered reasonable?
