We Like, Are Totally Spies

When we think about shows that will appeal to boys. Action is the easiest to relate. Something like; Ben 10, American Dragon Jake Long, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Justice League will be on the list. It has drama, it has fights and it's cool!

However, there has been a movement in that era where specific cartoon shows aim to get girls into action. Kim Possible, Juniper Lee, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and The Winx Club are perfect examples of such shows.

There is an odd case for more girl-centric shows. Something about the need to balance femininity with action. The show needs to feel like an action that happens to have the main characters be girls. This is where today's topic comes in. We're talking about how;

- How's the Mission, Spies? -

< Totally Spies > by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel follows three teens; Sam, Clover and Alex from Beverly Hills living a secret life being Super Spies for WOOHP (World Organization Of Human Protection) under their boss; Jerry Lewis.

Their missions involve travelling the world. Fighting mad scientists and twisted outcasts who seek to dominate the world with style and gadgets that conceal themselves as fashionable equipment.

The trio plays specific archetypes. Sam (green) is the brains, Clover (red) is the fashionista/ boy obsessive and Alex (yellow) is the athlete and occasional nerd. Despite their differences, they share several common interests such as their love for shopping and spy skills of agility, hand-to-hand combat and espionage.

Across six seasons, the girls matured from high school to university students. Confronting the daily struggles of homework, social lives and their petty arch-enemy, Mandy.

As a vibe, < Totally Spies > fully leans into the Beverly Hills lifestyle of fabulous fashion and some familiar pop culture names of that era. The show has a mix of the James Bond type of super spy world filled with dull henchmen, high-tech machines and some tacky villains.

- Time to go to Plan B! -

The episodes are condensed into their own episode. Although there have been some arcs that follow specific villains who have a bit of history with the main characters.

Tim Scam is a former agent who went rogue against WOOHP and Terrence Lewis; twin brother to Jerry and a sore thumb to WOOHP. There also reoccurring allies as well. Brittney (cyan) who joined the team as a trainee, Dean from the three-part series < Evil Promotion Much? > and Blaine a freelance agent who dated Clover.

The conflicts, if we can even call them conflicts at all have aged rather strangely. Some of the villains commit petty crimes like kidnapping celebrities due to jealousy or act extreme. Like being anti-consumerist with the solution of destroying malls.

Yet, some are still relatable to this day such as a kid villain who is mad at his father for being busy as a commentary on how parental neglect can cause warped ideas in a child. Whatever, it's a pre-teen show. Let's not look into it too deeply.

The world of Totally Spies is also interconnected with several other shows; [The Amazing Spiez] and [Martin Mystery].

< Martin Mystery > follows Martin, a paranormal investigator for the Center with Martin's step-sister, Diana Lombard and Java the Caveman. Fighting monsters, urban legends and aliens.

According to a special crossover episode. Martin's boss; M.O.M (Mystery Organization Manager) and Jerry know each other. Likewise, in Amazing Spiez; Jerry is also the boss of the Clark siblings. Lee, Marc, Megan and Tony. Sadly, these shows were short-lived and cancelled.

It does raise an interesting point. Why is Totally Spies more popular? As a guess, I think it's because the chemistry between the characters is a lot more interesting and fun.

The three girls are best of friends and while they sometimes bicker over boys, responsibilities and opinions. They will always put their friendship and mission first above all else. It feels more real, in a superficial way.

That an actual girl would have a girlfriend group this tight-knit and if they ever become a part of something bigger than them. They would do it together.

- Here We Go Again! -

Tacky villains, cute super spy girlfriends and awesome gadgets aside. The show has a few good jokes here and there. Its art style borrows a lot from Anime and its colors are groovy to the eyes.

For a show that was meant to attract girls into action. The show has also garnered a large following from boys as well. I think another secret to the success of < Totally Spies > can also be because of its approach to the subject. Like I said in my introduction.

This show is a girl's show. The girls are unapologetic being girly. Doing girl things like shopping, manicure, dating and going on dream vacations but with their secret life as spies. The show balances it out with good action and is still using that girly theme to add to its gadgets.

Heck, some of the gadgets are stuff that I would personally want to have. The Jet Pack backpack, The Wind Tunnel 3000 Tornado Blast Hair Dryer, Lazer lipstick and the Compowder are on my list. Especially with its costume change function.

It's a show that embraces both ends of the spectrum and allows it to show its respective strengths rather than shy away from the themes. With the announcement that this show is going to have a season 7/ soft reboot. It does look promising with several concerns.

But I am hopeful that for a beloved show such as this. The girls will have a proper return and inspire a new generation of girls (and boys) to be < Totally Spies >

Notes from Off Track (Reese’s, Towels, & St Pete)

Discussed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups vs Reese’s Pieces and I don’t know where to get these to do my own taste test but I am willing to take one for the team 🥜 🍫 

Thim texts James to say “is this good for Alex or bad for Alex?” because he STILL knows nothing about racing 🏎️ 

James said he has a specific towelling off routine but Alex does not (he said he is moist) 🚿 

James doesn’t get housekeeping in a hotel room when he’s away for an Indy car weekend and Alex said this is the thing he has disagreed with him most about 🧼 

Kelly is the same as James and Becky is the same as Alex which is why their polycule works 🥰

Thim got a facial (yes, he got a groupon)! He liked it! And he got some Java House stuff (it had no note or anything so he suspected it was Alex - SPOILER. It was) ☕️ 

“I felt bad he didn’t get anything. I’m a nice - AGAIN - nice person! People don’t believe it. Nice guy. Anyways. ***** *****. I’m kidding. We should cut that.” 😍

The production was good, the teams were good, the tyres were BAD. IndyCar wanted more of a separation between the two tyre types which does make sense, but basically they want to try to mitigate the fuel saving two stop option 🛞 

Alex isn’t sure that they had quite taken in the fact that the hybrid means the car is very different and a lot heavier 🏋️

Alex’s hybrid broke in the race (20-30 races) and he was very sassy about it 💅🏼

The hybrid seems to actually be making a difference and Alex said you could feel it, it’s mostly muscle memory to use it now, but if you’re in fuel save mode you have to pay attention to regen-ing the battery 🔋 

I’m not going to try TLDR all the technical stuff but Alex explained how different teams can deploy it and use the hybrid in races 🤓 

Alex said the worst car for him to be stuck behind for 100 laps was the #7 car 🫠 

There’s some good underlying foundational stuff at ECR so Alex is optimistic for the future, excited for thermal, but street courses are not their thing and they knew that so he counts it as a huge success 👍 

Alex hasn’t watched it back, but the playback isn’t available on YouTube yet - IndyCar on FOX on YouTube has it immediately after 📺 

1.4 million people watched - James said it was A Weekend - the majority of what has been received from fans is already stuff they are on with and they are working on it which is good to know! 🧱

James is “really proud of Will” 😉 but they agreed he did a good job and really knew his stuff. Also complemented Jack (he is on Tuesdays ep which was great) and apparently the warmup show was good, and if (like me) you didn’t get it on TV, apparently it’s on FOX YouTube 😊

Notes from Off Track (Facials, Coffee and St Pete)

They are looking up Alex’s nostrils because his camera is so low, and he doesn’t have a beard today because he had a facial the day before recording. A - “Dude you can tell me I look good and it’s fine.” J - “And I can, and I would…” T - “I hate it when mom and dad fight” A - “You don’t need a facial, you need Botox, which is not what I got” and apparently the reason Alex doesn’t need it is because he doesn’t ever smile. Anyway, it was a very fun exchange 😂

Alex commented that Josef has upped his style recently, and Tim said he’s going to do a parody of each of the outfits Josef posts, but they discussed F1 and their outfits 👗

Alex thinks that only a handful of drivers are bigger than the team - and he thinks fans are team > driver whereas in indycar it is driver > team. But Alex said he wouldn’t want the pressure of wearing fashion outfits to the paddock, he’s very happy in team gear 👕

Tim was complaining about people who watch videos in public without headphones on a plane. James admitted that he had forgotten to close the blind early in the morning on his flight and probably blinded everyone ☀️

Alex seems marginally excited that it’s race week? Maybe? But mostly he doesn’t really know what to expect - new tyres, hybrid at St Pete - but he’s excited to get into the season, but just hasn’t really got an idea of what’s going on 🤷🏻‍♀️

James got an ECR goodie box with exciting Splenda and Java House products and Tim was jealous and James was excited but then they had a lengthy debate about cold brew, ice coffee and normal coffee ☕️

James is also a little nervous about St Pete cos of all the new people and new team and stuff, but he said by the time we listen we’ll know pit lane reporter (which we do) and he seems happy about them 🎙️

They haven’t talked about what would be considered a success in terms of ratings numbers for St Pete - but it’s the first one so they just want to see steady growth. James also said there’s some stuff that will be rolled out later in the year, things that will evolve but there’s other stuff he’s excited for us to see from FOX but want feedback and fan response 📈

Alex even said he is going to watch the broadcast back for the very first time - he wants to see how it looks in terms of the presentation of the graphics, timings etc. and the stuff that has been leaked looks really good, and they’re going ton have drones in St Pete 😎

Alex asked James his top favourites going into the weekend - James said Penske looked good last year at St Pete and Alex came down very hard on stating that they were cheating multiple times, but also they were still good - they looked good at Sebring, but James picked his top Penske as Will. St Pete is one of 4 races Dixon has never won, so he’d love to see that too. He thinks Pato will be strong, Colton’s gonna go well (he jokingly said Alex will be the story of the weekend but Alex doesn’t seem too optimistic) 👀

James explained the grid rival fantasy thing, and he’s done a league called Hinchtown Hammerdown and there’s a link in the Spotify episode and on Off Track socials - James read out the values and Alex was BAFFLED by some of the values. Sadly he didn’t give his opinions on air which I am sad about but they are going to have a bet between the two of them who wins, and they are both in James’ league 🏆
