I am definitely not the first person to joke about how many Shens there are in danmei, but it does strike me as very funny that out of the Seven Seas line up, we currently have 4-5 protagonists/love interests with the surname "Shen." And then that sparked a question... just how many Shens are there in danmei?

So here is my request. If you have a danmei Shen not included on this list, please reblog or comment with his name and book. The only requirements are that he has to be one of the leads, and his surname has to be Shen*. Extra data, such as the character used for his name, is also welcome. It is worth acknowledging that sometimes it may be unclear whether or not a character should be counted as a Shen; in that case, I will put it to a vote. Once we have all the necessary data, we can create the first (at least to my knowledge) comprehensive database of Shens.

One of the things I'm enjoying about the romance between Fu Yun Xi and Zhuang Han Yan is that their experience is very apparent in how their feelings are progressing.

Yun Xi has approached Han Yan with a purpose. His next marriage must happen soon, and it must be a contract since he's on borrowed time. He's got adult shit to do, and romance is for children. His face always looks a bit startled and uncomfortable every time there is genuine romantic tension between them. He's starting to like her against his will.

But Han Yan, while similarly scheming, selfish, and goal oriented, is still just a 17 year old girl. She's never experienced being courted by someone with (presumably) romantic intention. Her smiles after they have their moments are the giddiness you feel when you think someone you're interested in might like you too. The possibility of their interest only intensifies your own. She's experiencing romance for the first time, and it's why she's disappointed when Yun Xi offers her exactly what she said she wanted.

Looking at your Snake Squad posts, I thought of like a Human AU version of them and here's what I got: Ushari & Randall used to be in the same prison and where they met each other. Sir Hiss is a former business partner who may have also been at prison before, and Jormungandr is a wrestler who's recently recovering from an injury during a wrestling match, all four of them happened to meet each other in a bar. Any thoughts? Forgive me for this being a little too long btw.

I love the idea of the squad coming from different backgrounds only to meet at the same bar. Hiss and Ushari being released from prison would be pretty accurate considering how Hiss was incarcerated at the end of Robin Hood and Ushari assisted in actually harming a child. Fu-xi could have definitely been in jail or smth for attempted poisoning. Kaa? He doesn’t talk about his past but it’s shady as hell

Ushari and Hiss both left their respective business partners after they were released for good behavior and cuz their partners were the true masterminds behind their crimes. Also Jormungandr being a wrestler recovering from an injury is great

Dunno where Randall came from considering he’s a lizard but I like to think he’d be a mutual friend of theirs on account that he befriended Shupavu and Njano in the au. Maybe he’s the bartender idk

I don't like it when people compare danmei, especially from different authors. I recently saw people comparing XL from TGCF and SQ from QQ - AGAIN. I think this comparison is soo weird how you can compare what happened to XL vs SQ or who is kinder. Both had completely different circumstances and it's obvious that they were written by someone else into completely different stories with completely different partners who played a VERY different role for them.

every danmei is so different from each other - you have wuxia xinxia political, more realistic or fairytale romantic....and overall the book's theme is different, it can be noticed that the past plays a crucial role in mxtx but never in mxs 's book

But comparing Meng Xi Shi and MXTX 's books is like comparing Harry Potter to Game of Thrones. The characters are different. The setting is different and the approach to relationships and romance is absolutely different.

I still haven’t read Thousand Autumns so I can’t comment on the comparisons between Xie Lian and Shen Qiao. I will say I’ve experienced your pain though - I can’t stand how often Svsss and 2ha are compared to each other because they are completely different and comparing them is kind of just false advertising at this point.

I wouldn’t say comparing danmei is bad in itself though. I have used Jiang Cheng and Chengxian to convince people to read Yuwu. And I would say if you enjoy tgcf you’ll like Guardian. Personally, I actually think Guardian does a lot of tgcf’s tropes better. I think it depends on how it’s done. Whilst there’s a variety of styles of danmei, danmei in general is just bl which is a genre with its own tropes and conventions. Gongs and Shous are basically used as character archetypes and so if people want something that features X Y and Z comparing that to other danmei is a way to get people to read more stories and therefore a good thing.

But when the tropes aren’t matched properly, or the vibes don’t align it’s a hot mess and what you end up with is people reading things expecting one thing and getting something they absolutely did not want.

Just from knowing the type of stories Meng Xi Shi writes, I don’t think there’s much commonality with Mxtx so I’m not sure why that’s become a thing.

it’s so important to me that chong zhao was giving bai shuo the sachet back before he knew it didn’t belong to her back then. it shows he already chose fu ling and was letting go of the idea of bai shuo he had by giving it back. the reveal that it was bai xi who he looked to for comfort all along makes it sweeter but he would have chosen her anyway
