Donovan, Man. Donovan.

During the summer of 2016 I was really getting into the music from the 1960′s. My mom had just died and I was beginning yet again another grief-induced search into my soul. I’m sure the state of our country due to the upcoming 2016 election was also a factor in a desire to hear music from that period of time.

The first song of Donovan’s that I was presented with was “Mellow Yellow”.  It had a fun trippy vibe and I had remembered if from a GAP Ad from my youth. Next a friend told me that if I liked that Donovan song then I must check out “Sunshine Superman”. That did it. From that point I was obsessed. Needed to know every song from the Donovan playbook. Needed to know which artists stole influence from him (spoiler alert: The BEATLES) and yeah, man. Donovan (snaps fingers).

As a new Donovan fan. A fan who was not even alive during his popularity, I have decided to give you my TOP TEN LIST of DONOVAN SONGS that will make you a fan, man.

Show Description: On May 12th at 7pm & 9pm please join "3 Times Voted Best Comedian in Pittsburgh"Gab Bonesso as she returns to Arcade Comedy Theater to record her upcoming album tentatively titled Gab Bonesso: Manic Depressive. Gab is also a Nationally Awarded Mental Health Public Speaker and Children's Performer (the Josh and Gab Show). Throughout her career Gab has used comedy as a way to share her journey with mental health and to promote kindness in schools. Through her work with Josh Verbanets (Meeting of Important People front man), Gab started writing music and has been writing songs for the last decade. Her upcoming album will feature LIVE standup comedy, and original music that will be recorded in-studio. Gab is working with legendary Pittsburgh producer and musician Jake Hanner (Donora) on this project. The idea is to use both standup comedy, original music and other sounds to convey the mind of Gab Bonesso. Josh Verbanets is also working on this project as both a musician and producer. Gab Bonesso speaks openly about her mental health in an attempt to normalize the subject and allow others to feel safe to explore their own mental health journey.

As a Pennsylvanian, I think Dr. Rachel Levine is a ROCK STAR of a doctor and a human. I was recently on a Zoom Meeting preparing for a month-long fundraiser to raise awareness for TRANS RIGHTS. We were pitching ideas of who would be great speakers for the event which is being produced by NBC PEACOCK TV. I started pitching the idea of reaching out to Dr. Levine since she is a Trans Woman who has been online bullied during this entire COVID-19 Pandemic. Dr. Levine is on TV daily briefing Pennsylvanians about COVID-19 and everyday she is subjected to Transphobic vitriol. I told this to the other folks involved in the event (they all live in NYC and LA). No one even knew who she was or that she was being harassed at this level. I decided right then and there to make a TRIBUTE VIDEO/PSA VIDEO in support of her and all she does for the state of Pennsylvania.

You got a fan in me, Dr. Levine.

Seasonal Depression Tool Kit (part one: music therapy)

Hey there!

It’s January 17th and I need it to be Spring and that’s not happening for 63 days. Plus, I live in Pgh which means that we won’t really see spring weather for probably 90 days. It’s okay... It’s okay. Tomorrow the temperature is going to rise to a balmy 35 degrees. I can handle 35 degrees. 

I can’t handle walking outside in 1 degree weather and immediately getting an ear ache and a sore throat within seconds. I don’t like the body aches that come with the cold. I don’t like the water in my basement that is coming with the snow. I don’t like driving in horrid conditions. I don’t like leaving the gym soaking wet with sweat and walking into negative degree weather and feeling like utter garbage. I found a solution to that. I just stopped going to the gym. Fun fact: Not going to the gym is making my depression worse. DAMN YOU, Catch 22!

So yeah... I am doing what I can to stay positive and to stay functional. It’s a struggle that many people endure during this time of the year and I know that I am not alone. I also know that there are so many people rooting for me and supporting me and I am very blessed. 

So with that... I am going to share some songs that i’ve been listening to during my malaise.

I am happy to report: I really enjoy it at the moment. Hence it making the list.

In general I am still listening to the new N.E.R.D. album and I am really obsessed with Frankie Cosmos at the moment. So they get the most play, but yeah... The whole playlist comforts me on some level.

I am going back to the gym big time this weekend. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and then Monday. I’ll break Tuesday and get back at it on Wednesday for heavy day. I know you don’t care about this, but if I type it I might hold myself to it.
