Kaiju Week in Review (March 17-23, 2024)
Mere days to go before a new Godzilla movie... didn't we just do this?
Tumblr media
Before we welcome that latest entry, let's look back on one that just commemorated its golden anniversary. With Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla turning 50 on March 21, every member of Toho's Big Five has now hit the half-century mark. The company didn't mark the day itself with much; as has become typical, the celebration of Mechagodzilla (and presumably King Caesar) will be spread throughout the year. I wrote a bit about the magnificent machine, who I consider the best Godzilla antagonist, here. The film itself is one of Teruyoshi Nakano's masterpieces, an onslaught of animated rays and gorgeous explosions. The humans are forgettable, but they keep the pace brisk—and the alien commander Mugal is almost as devilish a villain as Mechagodzilla itself, especially in the English dub. Speaking of that dub, you can watch a video breaking down the entire voice cast here, thanks to the tireless work of the Save All Dubs! group.
Tumblr media
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #6 finally gets to the good stuff, with Lex Luthor piloting Mechagodzilla and commanding an army of Titans to raze Metropolis while the heroes counter with not one but two giant robots. It doesn't quite measure up to the Godzilla: Rulers of Earth finale, but like that double-sized issue, it required two artists (Christian Duce joined by Tom Derenick) to draw all those characters, and the results are impressive. The story hasn't grown any more complex, but I'm at least interested to see how it all wraps up.
In other Godzilla comic news, a Godziban manga by Sakuju Koizumi has started up, hosted by Telemaga, a tokusatsu-focused Kodansha site. The first installment was pretty short, so I'm guessing these'll be updated weekly. It isn't the first comic version of Godziban, as one called Godziman ran during the 1st Season, but this one's actually illustrated.
youtube
Tokyo's Ikebukuro district made Godzilla the honorary chief of police on March 16 to take part in a parade promoting traffic safety. The stunt made international headlines and generated no small amount of angst over Cop Godzilla. I think Gamera would've been better-suited to this campaign myself.
youtube
Here's the trailer for Season 2 of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again, revealing Gabara, Gigan, and Titanosaurus's designs. Looks as funny as the first one. Maaya Uchida, who sang the ending songs in SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, will voice Chibi Minilla. It's gone weirdly neglected by English Godzilla social media accounts, but X user @MakoMattari translated it.
Tumblr media
The Music Box Theatre in Chicago has a Godzilla program for the ages scheduled for June 7-13, in honor of his 70th birthday. There's not a weak day on the schedule, but the clear highlight is a 24-hour marathon of the entire Showa series on the 8th, which I don't think has ever been attempted before.
G-Fest has also started announcing guests: Ayako Fujitani (Asagi in the Heisei Gamera trilogy) and Rie Ota (Baragon in GMK), both first-timers. Frankly, they could carry the con themselves if they have to; not sure who I'm more excited to meet!

Gamera Super Monster (1980)
And he does get a son in these movies so I suggest one of those. But I would think that in most cases Godzilla being the main character and only comes out to save children. It's really the monster of the week kind of attitude that I really enjoy in the easier seasons.

The 2024 Godzilla Marathon
Hullo, hullo! So; at the end of 2023 my family and I caught a rather horrible strain of covid, which left us housebound for two weeks. During that time, my father and I decided to use my Apple TV trail to watch Monarch, and ever since I've been on a kick with reliving some childhood nostalgia by rewatching (and for a lot of titles, watching for the first time!) a bunch of Godzilla movies. Oh. And this year marks 70 years for the franchise. So it seemed like the perfect chance to celebrate. I'm hoping this list will keep track of all things Godzilla while I take on this task. Now I don't plan to watch every movie made because there is a lot, and the quality can differ. But, let's see how much fun I have. Here is my best of ... Godzilla movies list on MDL; which I intend to update as I go along with the titles I really enjoyed.

Persona 5 Comfort List
Ren Amamiya
Ren is very quick to figure out a plan and round up supplies, and with your strong network of found family, neither of you have to go anywhere for anything, obviously short of something akin to a doctor’s appointment.
He didn’t figure out those massages for nothing, my friend. If it is of any benefit to you at all, you’re getting all the tension and pain melted from your body that he is physically able to. Ren isn’t going to let you suffer an iota more than healing requires of you, and even that is going to be challenged.
Always has plenty of entertainment to keep you sane while you need to be resting. Whatever it is you like, just name it and it’s yours. Books? Movies? Obscure corrupted bootleg game carts? Hands-on hobbies? All that and more.
For someone who wholly enjoys a good kaiju movie marathon, you find yourself entirely unable to focus. The last bit your brain caught was the Zigran spaceship morphing into a swordfish shape after Gamera breathed fire on it, but you’re definitely well past where that led. Instead you’ve melted into an almost trance-like state of relaxation, lost in the sauce of a calm afternoon, and it’s all on Ren.
Honestly, you’ve joked more than once he should be locked up for how good he is at massages and you’ll stand by that today as he sits behind you, hands lazily kneading your shoulders and upper back. Even on a fantastic day Ren can steal all the tension from your muscles so on a day like today, when the thread of pain keeps your body wound up, his skill is an actual miracle. If you aren’t careful you might actually melt, you think sluggishly to yourself, melt and soak right into the ground.
“Do you want me to pause the movie?” Ren asks, all but whispering the question into your ear to not disturb you. It takes your lagging brain a long moment to process what you’ve just been asked, but when it does you nod once. You don’t have the presence to keep paying attention, and that seems to show given the soft laugh your answer earns you. “Alright then Treasure, how about a nap then?”
Ryuji Sakamoto
For someone who is hard to keep down to heal on his own accord, Ryuji is extremely good at taking care of others, having learned a lot of tips and tricks between being a lovely mama’s boy and his time on the track team. If there’s something that isn’t quite relieved, Ryuji will know a way to ease your burden.
At least half of his help comes in the form of keeping you busy. Time is gonna fly like a fighter jet when he’s hanging around during your recovery period, and a lot of that is going to be movies and video games, though he’s also very good at being a fun commentator during a marathon of a show, too.
While maybe not a fantastic cook, he’s good at the basics and there is no denying the amount of heart he pours into it. He’ll keep you warm and fed, and always buys Ann off to bring some nice desserts to treat you to while you can’t enjoy time out on the town.
"Ahaha! If you get any worse I’m going to have to go tuck you in for some bed-rest, Grandpa!” you can’t help but bark out amidst your laughter, trying and failing miserably to not fall over to the side into the blankets you’ve cast off to reveal your true gamer prowess. So invested are you in your winning streak, you’ve completely forgotten why you were curled up here on the couch on the first place.
“Oi! I’m only makin’ sure you get a proper handicap!” Ryuji snaps back with a pout. Obviously, his reaction and denial only renews your laughter, causing him to softly bat you on the head with a pillow.
You reply by sticking out your tongue and giggling. “I’m not that beat up that you need to let me win, you know. Come at me full throttle and let’s see if I need to give you a handicap for the next round.”
Yusuke Kitagawa
Yusuke is almost going to need more help than you are if you’re at least well enough to be at home. While not the kind of young man to panic, he also doesn’t have any practice at all in tending to someone else despite his sincere desire to help you on your road to recovery. Thankfully, one thing Yusuke is very good at is requests, and so long as you ask in a straightforward manner he is willing to do anything he is able to help you.
While not the tenderest of lovers, Yusuke always does his absolute best to make sure you are better off at all times, and the proof of this comes from how much time he actively takes from his art to assist you. Even when he is busy with his tasks, he tends to stay close by, no more than a room or two away in case you need his assistance.
"What’re you working on there?” you can’t help but ask after you’ve looked away from the TV during a commercial and over at Yusuke, who is unsurprisingly at an easel laboring away at a painting. He’s been here with you all day, each of you keeping yourself busy while remaining in soothing company.
It’s one of his abstract ones, that much is obvious, but it doesn’t give you any good vibes at all. Instead it’s discomforting, dark reds and purples lingering among pasty greens and yellows. Knowing how Yusuke tends to pour his emotions out onto the canvas, it makes you nervous. Is he okay? You aren’t imposing on him, are you?
So lost in thought at that exact moment, you miss the way Yusuke catches your expression. “Seeing you in such a state brings me grief,” he states clearly, voice carrying an edge of softness for your benefit. “I find myself at a constant loss knowing you must wait out your suffering. If I cannot rid you of your pain, I thought by expressing it in this manner would ease my feelings.”
Goro Akechi
A bit of a hit or miss when it comes to actual TLC, Goro really does try his best for you, whatever that ends up looking like. A lot of his behavior is going to reflect exactly how you’ve acted in similar situations where he’s gotten to watch you in charge; his keen eye as far as watching other people’s behavior pays off here. Outside of that, it’s going to be a little textbook, running off what he’s heard or seen on TV or in conversations.
Ask and you shall receive, however. Anything you ask for that he can bring you, he will. He finds out here that he enjoys pampering you and finally fully understands why you are so generous with him when he needs your assistance. There’s a trust in this that teaches him something, and that newfound knowledge gets expressed in his care too.
In all his time performing favors and services for other people, Akechi has to admit to himself that he’s never once found it to be such an experience as this one is turning out to be. Needless to say, seeing you injured and forced to rest isn’t at all a welcome scenario, the complete opposite is the true, however getting to help you when you very well could use his help awakens something in the young man. To be needed, in a way, to be trusted to help, and then for said assistance to be met with sincere thankfulness and gratitude. In it’s own way, the reaction that your lovely smiles drags from his rehabilitating heart is an intoxicant.
Which leads to here and now, finally back from a quick errand run this morning to surprise you. You haven’t asked him for much even though you’re stuck at home for a while yet, a trait of yours he’s learned in your presence, and Akechi can’t stop himself from thinking about how excited he’s certain you’ll be when he shows you later this evening. In all the years he’s known you, you’ve always loved when he brings you to someplace new that he’s found in his trips around the city, eyes sparkling like a kid in a candy store, and since you can’t get out and about with comfort, he’s made the effort to bring as much of the novel experiences in to you.
Satanael
Beloved Barista’s Bonus Round Time
As far as Satanael is concerned you are Actual Royalty and will be treated as such until there isn’t a single speck of injury left on your mortal frame and there are no Ifs, Ands, or Buts about it. You can try and talk your way out of it, but for all the wiggle room you get for your comfort you’re still going to learn what it’s like to be put on a pedestal.
I mean it, you couldn’t pay any amount of money to be cared for so intently. Whatever you want to eat is yours, with some negotiation at least for nutrition, and if you don’t outright object you’re going to be fed. You want something to keep you occupied? Yours, just don’t ask questions about how he got it so fast, the only answer you’ll get is that smug smile of his. Some bit of pain not quite leaving you? He’ll find a way, come hell or high water, to soothe it out of you so you are in zero discomfort.
In all your imagined scenarios of how you thought this time of staying home to allow yourself to rest and recover could be spent, not a single one of them was anything like this. You haven’t been this well tended to even during your one stay at the hospital back as a kid. It’s... Well, honestly it’s complex. You’re used to taking care of yourself, of being self-reliant, and this definitely isn’t what you’re used to. However, you have to admit, a very large part of you is reveling in being spoiled so wholly rotten; you only have to put in the absolute bare minimum effort for your own self care, everything else is taken care for you.
“Is there something you are lacking?” A baritone voice, smooth as silk, cuts through your internal monologue causing your gaze to snap up. Inhumanly gorgeous liquid blue and gold eyes are peering down at you, laying here in his lap, softly with the same curiosity as Satanael’s question. “What can I provide for you?”
A question you’ve been asked often in these last couple days, and one you always feel a little guilty answering. Oh certainly, you could ask for quite literally anything on the Earth itself and you don’t doubt it would end up in your hands, but there’s a limit you find yourself with, especially since you don’t even see yourself as being so wounded that you’ve earned such showering with gifts. Eventually an answer comes to you and without saying anything first, you lift an arm up and carefully, with infinite delicacy, boop him on his nose. “You’re all I could want.”

On this day in 1954 the groundbreaking movie Gojira was released and began his 67 year journey of being King of the Monsters and one of the LONGEST running franchises to withstand the test of time.
Godzilla may not have been the very first Giant Monster movie (1933s King Kong & Son of Kong and 1953s The Beast from 20000 Fathoms), but he revolutionized an industry. In 1954 Haruo Nakajima, rest his soul, became the very first actor to wear not only the Godzilla suit, but the very first monster suit ever because it would have been too expensive and long to make a stop motion movie.
King Kong and the Rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20000 Fathoms may have inspired Godzilla, but Godzilla has been the inspiration for every monster that came after him whether they were Toho Cinema spinoff movies or other studios.
And as I have said before on my facebook page, Godzilla may not be as popular as Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, or select others who have withstood the test of time, but to this day remains the strongest when fans of said series are literally at one another’s throats over the “new stuff.”
Some accomplishments accredited to the Godzilla franchise as a whole:
Appeared in 37 movies including cave paintings in Kong Skull Island. 3 of which were CG-Animated movies
Has a Hanna-Barbara series when there were no movies between 1975 and 1984 and a Tri-Star tie-in series to the 1998 movie
Has officially crossed over the threshold into anime with Godzilla Singular Point.
Been SUCCESSFULLY rebooted 5 or 6 times (many argue whether MonsterVerse is part of the Reiwa Era or not)
Inspired many in-house and competitor spinoffs such as Gamera, Mothra, Rodan, Varan, Gappa, Zarkorr, Gorgo, Pulgasari, Yonggary and many many others.
Original Gojira still remains the Golden Standard for kaiju/giant monster movies to live up to and seldom do.
Has influences and in referenced in almost everything in media
So here is to 67 years of his glorious reign as King of the Monsters, and hoping for another STRONG 33 more for his 100th Anniversary!
Here is how I am celebrating with a 15 and a half hour marathon with the following movies-
Gojira
Godzilla vs Mothra
Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster - Now playing as I type this
Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
Godzilla 1985
Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla
Godzilla Final Wars
Godzilla - 2014
and last but not least Shin Godzilla
*credit to artist of Godzilla and Little-G eating cake. I found it on a website in 2012/2013

CHRISTMAS MOVIE LIST
Since the holiday really extends over the rest of the weekend, I’m putting together a list of Xmas movies to put/keep me in the holiday mood.
So far I’ve put together:
Batman Returns
Gremlins
Die Hard 1 & 2 (yeah, I know #2 is nowhere near as good, but it still happens at Xmas-time)
Lethal Weapon
Trading Places
The Ref
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Moonstruck
In Bruges
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Shazam
maybe Iron Man 3
Or I could go the more traditional route.
Growing up on Long Island on television WPIX Channel 11 and WWOR Channel 9 always ran monster movie marathons on both Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I always figured it was their way of helping out parents by corralling the kids in the TV room for the entire afternoon.
On one of the holidays WWOR Channel 9 would always play (original versions only!):
King Kong
Son of Kong
Mighty Joe Young
and either King Kong vs Godzilla or King Kong Escapes.
Whereas WPIX Channel 11 would usually play an assortment of Godzilla and/or Gamera films.  WWOR Channel 9 would do the same on whatever holiday they weren’t showing all the Kong-related films.
And after reviewing this post I’ve decided that, as much as I like the first list, I’m definitely going the traditional route this year.

The Order I Saw the Godzilla Movies In (Revised)
I recently revised my personal timeline of when and how I became a Godzilla fan when I realized that my “obviously wrong” memory of starting in January 1994 was, in fact, 100% correct.  So, considering that, here’s the (rough) order I saw the Godzilla movies, how, and briefly my initial reaction:
1. Godzilla vs. Megalon - Circa 1990. This was the first Godzilla movie I remember seeing, a VHS copy my aunt bought for my younger cousin in the bargain bin someplace (wild guess: a Bradlees department store in Saddle Brook, NJ) . She'd put it on TV while my cousin and I were playing, but I never gave much thought to it. 2. Godzilla 1985 - January 9, 1994.  My family was over at my grandmother's house for a family party on the day of the NFC Wild Card game between the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.  I happened to catch a commercial for the 5 P.M. movie on WPIX-11 out of New York, which that day happened to be Godzilla 1985. I was going through a Dinosaur and Monster craze at the time (thanks to Jurassic Park and Power Rangers) and made a point of watching it because it looked like the COOLEST THING EVER.  It blew my mind!  I wouldn't shut up about it for weeks! 3. Terror of Mechagodzilla - January 15?, 1994.  Since I was talking nonstop about Godzilla everyday since seeing G85, my Dad took me to the local videostore a week or so later and rented this, the only Godzilla movie they had, for me to watch. I remember being confused by this movie and didn't care much for it. 4. - 7. Godzilla, King of the Monsters, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, and Godzilla's Revenge - January 29 and 30, 1994. Shortly after watching ToMG, I found out that TNT’s MonsterVision was having a Godzilla night on January 29. I was SUPER-excited for it, and the marathon is really what cemented my fandom. I remember recognizing immediately that GKOTM was the original movie (and, for some reason, thought Goji's ears were horns).  The marathon started at 8 PM and I stayed up to watch that one, falling asleep some time during Mothra vs. Godzilla.  I watched the rest the next day on tape. That video was one of my most prized possessions as a kid, right up until I got the Simitar VHS set in 1998!  Interesting to note: this broadcast of Godzilla vs. Monster Zero cut the entire second Planet X sequence.  The characters leaving Earth with Godzilla and Rodan is cut off by a commercial break, and when the movie resumes is when Fuji and Glenn leave Planet X with the tape.  While I saw screenshots of the sequence in G-Fan, from 1994 until some time in 1999 when I finally sat to watch the Simitar release of the movie, I was completely unaware the Godzilla/Rodan v. Ghidorah fight, the Godzilla dancing scene, or the scene with Glenn and the multiple Kumi Mizunos were actually real scenes and not just promotional shots. 8. King Kong vs. Godzilla - April 3, 1994.  My family often merges my birthday party with Easter because the two fall so close to each other most years, and this was one of them.  I received the movie as a birthday gift from, I believe, one of my aunts. I remember being surprised the movie existed at all, the idea that King Kong and Godzilla COULD fight each other hadn't hit me yet. After this point my recollection is vague.  I'll give this in what I think is rough order. 9. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep - Spring/Summer 1994??? We got the 1992 Goodtimes release from a bargain bin, either in Kmart or Bradlees. I remember being disappointed by this one.
10. Destroy All Monsters - Summer 1994. My parents bought it from a shortlived kaiju/sentai/henshin stand my family discovered on the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ. It was by the Funtime Pier, nearish the Sawmill. The owner saw I was a wide-eyed kid who'd just discovered the fandom, and talked up the movie (I didn't need much convincing). 11. Godzilla vs. Mothra - Summer 1994. I don't remember buying this movie, but I know I saw it well before I saw Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla ‘93 because the tape had the early teaser trailer for it that mostly was showing off the poster, making the movie look way darker and more badass than it turned out to be. I’m certain I bought it from the same stand in Seaside Heights, and in fact it may have been the same day as DAM. I don't remember, though.  I'm only certain I saw it before the end of Summer 1994.
12. Godzilla vs. Gigan - 1994/1995??? Our family's favorite videostore was this place on Main Ave. in Lodi, NJ, across from the Kmart. It was AWESOME. It had EVERYTHING. It had a huge Sci-Fi/Horror section and was single-handedly the biggest reason why I was able to see as many Godzilla movies as I did as a kid (as well as many Gamera movies, plus a bunch of other genre films, PLUS the classic Universal Horror films).  The VHS was the the New World Video or '92 StarMaker release, I'm not entirely sure. The picture of Godzilla on the ground, appearing bloody and dead, was what caught my attention and made me rent it. I remember being surprised by how dark this one was.
13. Godzilla Raids Again - 1994/1995??? I spotted this one while browsing the videos in Lodi and was intrigued by the box art (it was the Video Treasures release). I've always liked this one a lot because it was a direct sequel to the first movie, because I liked both monsters' designs, and thought they had a really cool fight. 14. Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster - 1994/1995??? Honestly? I don't remember. Either I rented it from the store in Lodi or recorded it off the TV. I don't remember how I felt after seeing it, it didn't leave much of an impression on me at the time.  Now, it's one of my favorite Godzilla movies!
15 .Godzilla vs. Hedorah - Summer 1995. Rented the Orion Pictures VHS from the videostore in Lodi. I don't recall my initial reaction.
16. Godzilla vs. Biollante - Summer 1995. I went with my Dad to a supermarket in East Rutherford for groceries one afternoon, and while there we visited the videstore across the street. As had become my SOP by that point, I went to the Sci-Fi section and looked for Godzilla movies and I discovered it there. The cover caught me immediately, like GvMG2's cover it was SO COOL. We rented it, and I was doubly surprised to discover that this was a direct sequel to Godzilla 1985! AWESOME! Then, triply surprised by the violent opening sequence - so surprised that I actually ejected the tape to double-check that this was a Godzilla movie. By the time I finished watching it the first time, I had been permanently fixed as my favorite Godzilla movie. ^___^
17. Son of Godzilla - Summer 1995. Fairly certain we rented it from the videostore in Lodi. I liked this one and actually used to watch it a lot. 18. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla - Summer 1995.  Rented the '92 StarMaker VHS from the videostore in Lodi. This quickly became one of my favorites! I later bought the GoodTimes "Godzilla vs. Cosmic Monster" version from a bargain bin in Kmart, thinking it was a different movie, only to discover that it was an edited down version of GvMG (I could tell since the StarMaker version had the opening scene with Anguirus, the Cosmic Monster version did not). 19. - 20. Godzilla vs. Super-Mechagodzilla and Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla - Summer 1995.  While on a day trip to Sandy Hook in South Jersey I convinced my parents to drive all the way down to Seaside Heights so I could buy these, as I’d spotted them when we were in Seaside Heights last time. I watched Space Godzilla that night - this would be the first Godzilla movie I ever watched in Japanese without subs (it was a theatrical camcorder bootleg, I remember hearing the audience and seeing people getting up and walking around), I ate it up anyway. ^_^ I watched GvMG2 the next day while at a family party in Pennsylvania and loved it. ^_^ From this point forward the order is accurate. 21. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - Possibly 1996. I became aware of this movie when I walked into the Garden State Plaza's Starlog store in Summer 1994, I think, (long since closed) and spotted stills of Mecha King Ghidorah and Godzillasaurus. I ended up buying a subbed bootleg from The Outer Limits in Clifton, NJ in either late 1995 or some time in 1996. 22. Godzilla vs. Destroyah - Summer 1996 or 1997. I also bought this, subbed, from The Outer Limits in Clifton, NJ. I remember buying this one in the summer, and it having been a very long time after it came out, so I'm leaning toward it having been Summer of 1997. This was one of the last movies I saw before Zilla'98 came out. I remember liking it quite a lot, and eventually it became one of the most-watched Heisei films for me. 23. Godzilla (1998) - May 1998. Saw it at the Highway Theater in Fair Lawn, NJ. I remember liking it after walking out of the theater. I didn't "decide" that I "hated" it until I read the next issue of G-Fan and realized all the other fans had hated it, so I switched gears and claimed to hate it too. I didn't change my mind about it until I gave it a second chance in 2002. Today I'm mostly neutral toward it, my biggest criticism being that it’s really dull. 24. Godzilla 2000 - August 2000. Saw it at the Clifton Commons theater in Clifton, NJ. For some reason, I wasn't excited about seeing this one and ended up waiting a week before going. I remember walking away happy I saw it, but not crazy about it. It left little impression on me for years after, although more recently I’ve come around and nowadays like it quite a lot. :) 25. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus - Summer 2001. Bought this, subbed, from The Outer Limits in Clifton, NJ. I didn't care much for it (I also didn't find out about the after-credits sequence until it came out on video in the U.S. officially). 26. GMK - Summer 2002 or 2003. Bought this, subbed, from The Outer Limits in Clifton, NJ. Being a fan of the Heisei Gamera films by this point, I was pretty disappointed by this movie. I remember not liking much of anything about it. Since then, I've 100% reversed and its now one of my favorite Post-'80s Godzilla films. 27. Godzilla against Mechagodzilla - 2004 or 2005. Don't recall how I got this one, it might've been Christmas 2004. I liked it quite a lot at the time, and thus far has held up on repeat viewings. 28. Godzilla (1954) - Fall 2004. One of the last things I bought from the Outer Limits before the store closed. I watched it in my dorm room during my first semester of college and remember being amazed, it was like seeing the movie again for the first time. ^_^ 29. Godzilla: Tokyo SOS - 2005. Bought it from the FYE in the Paramus Park Mall, I think. I didn't like it at all. I thought it was a serious let down after GxMG, and felt that movie deserved better than a bad remake of Mothra vs. Godzilla.   I've since revised my opinion and like it more, but still think it should have been better. 30. Godzilla: Final Wars - 2005. Bought it from the FYE in the Paramus Park Mall, I think.  At the time I liked it and for years thought other fans were being too hard on it.   After rewatching it again around 2013 or so, though, it plummeted through the floor to me and my opinion wasn’t nearly so high.  I slowly warmed back up to it, eventually deciding to make my own fan edit which is now my preferred version to watch.
31. Godzilla (2014) - May 2014.  Saw it at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ on opening night.   Loved it!  One of the rare movies I went back and saw again in theaters, and has only gotten better after the many repeat viewings since.  ^_^
32. The Return of Godzilla - 2015???  Considering this was only a few years ago, I’m really sort of baffled that I can’t figure out when I bought this??  After years of waiting, I got impatient for an official U.S. release and imported a copy from Japan.  It was wonderful to see the movie that made me a fan again after so long, even if it wasn’t the G’85 version, but I found the Japanese version surprisingly lacking compared to the Americanized version (which I soon after found a bootleg to compare).  The lack of music and many of what I feel were poorer editing choices really hurt the Japanese cut for me, and to this day the pure Japanese cut of this film is my lead favorite version (my preferred, these days, is the Godzilla: Resurrection fan edit).
33. Shin Godzilla - October 2016.  Saw this in, I believe, Fort Lee, NJ when it was having its theatrical run.  Loved it!  Second Godzilla movie I’d gotten my now brother-in-law to come see (I brought him to a screening of G’54 in New York City in 2014).
34. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters - 2018.  I saw this as soon as it hit Netflix and while I enjoyed it, my feelings have been mixed.  I love the creativity of it, but it’s a pretty slow movie and not one I see myself returning to much.  One of the only ones I don’t own a copy of.
35. Godzilla: Mechagodzilla City - 2018. Yeah, screw the official title of this, it’s Mechagodzilla City for me.  I liked this one MUCH more than PotM, a truly inspired take on the Godzilla and Mechagodzilla rivalry.  Very much enjoyed!  Also don’t own a copy, since Netflix has yet to give it a physical release.
36. Godzilla: King of the Monsters - May 2019.  Saw this one in theaters at least twice, once in I believe Secaucus and again in Holmdel.  I think I saw it once more in Paramus, too.  Unbelievably enjoyable movie, and easily one of my absolute favorites of this year.  ^_^
39. King Kong vs. Godzilla (Japanese Version) - December 2019.  Finally got a chance to sit and watch this recently thanks to the Criterion set.  Loved it!
38. Godzilla: The Planet Eater - 2019???  Okay, time to come clean: I technically haven’t actually seen this one yet.  ^^()

Could you make like a top five or so best movies for a Kaiju film newb like me to dip their feet into? Thanks a lot!
Ooo, that’s a difficult but fun task!  I’ll try my best!
For clarity, this is not a Top 5 Best Kaiju Movies list or even a TT’s Top 5 Personal Favorite Kaiju Movies List.  This is a list specifically focused on introducing someone to kaiju, under the presumption they have very little if any understanding of the genre going in.  As you specified, it’s for newbies - which means some of the best kaiju movies aren’t going to be on it, because a lot of the really good ones are far better experienced once you know the genre well.  It’s hard to enjoy Avengers if you haven’t seen Iron Man, after all.
I’d also recommend watching them in the order I’m listing, because my goal is to give you a good entry point while also preparing you for the fun, weird shit that makes kaiju movies so special, and that’s going to take some progress.
First Intro to Kaiju Marathon Film - Kong Skull Island
I want to start you off with something close in tone to modern blockbuster sci-fi action movies, and while I’m spoiled for choices in this regards, I feel Kong Skull Island is your best bet.  More than any other modern kaiju film, it puts an emphasis on how its monsters are characters, with the main plotline being focused on humanity coming to understand the titular monster, King Kong, as being far more complex than simple obstacle to be overcome.  It’s also got a lot of weird monster shit in it, and honestly feels more like a typical Godzilla movie than a typical Kong movie, to its benefit.  Plus it’s PRETTY GOOD and very fun.
Runners Up for this category: Pacific Rim (a better film than Kong Skull Island, but while it’s a great gateway to kaiju cinema, it means so much more if you come into it with an understanding of the movies and TV shows that inspired it - I would put off watching it until you’ve watched a LOT of kaiju movies just so your first experience is all the more impactful), Rampage (gets down most of the same positives as Kong Skull Island, but is less ambitious.  Still a hell of a lot of fun and not a bad entry point into the genre.)
Second Intro to Kaiju Marathon Film - Gamera: Guardian of the Universe
Backtracking a couple decades, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe is the first film in the 90′s Gamera trilogy, and probably my favorite of the 90′s kaiju flicks overall.  Its sequels are arguably smarter (and definitely more ambitious) films, but you’re looking for an entry point, and this is what you need for that.  It’s new enough to still be slick, while old enough to give you a feel for the man-in-suit action that defines the classic kaiju film - and has some of the best man-in-suit special effects of all time to boot.  The villain monster, Gyaos, is truly horrifying and nasty, and the hero monster Gamera is absolutely lovable.  The human cast is pretty good too, and it’s one of the best examples of a human hero with a supernatural connection to the main hero monster, which is a pretty standard (and deservedly so) trope for the genre.
Runners Up for this category: Godzilla 1985/The Return of Godzilla (a lot of the same good qualities along with a more somber/scary tone, but a bit harder to get a hold of), Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (again, a lot of the same good qualities, including the same director as Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, but with a bit more complicated mythology, and a bit more dependence on you knowing a bit about Godzilla already beforehand)
Third Intro to Kaiju Marathon Film - Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1974)
Backing up a few decades more, our third film in the marathon is meant to dive into the fucking CRAZY shit that makes kaiju films so fun.  With robot kaiju doppelgangers, spies, space-apes masquerading as humans, a giant semi-organic version of those Shisa lion dog statues, and 1970′s Japanese jazz music, this movie will give you a sense of how goddamn weird a kaiju flick can get, all while having some of the best action in the series.  It kicks ass and will leave you baffled but entertained.
Runners Up for this category: Godzilla vs. Hedorah/Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (even weirder than this film, but more divisive among fans in terms of quality), Godzilla: Final Wars (weirder still, dumber, and far more divisive, but also so fucking fun)
Fourth Intro to Kaiju Marathon Film - Ghidorah the 3 Headed Monster
This is possibly my favorite kaiju film of all time, and while part of my love for it is how it marks a colossal turning point in Godzilla’s character arc in the Showa movies (and thus isn’t quite as easy to appreciate divorced from the context of the movies that precede it), I still recommend it here because even taken on its own it’s a gem.  It’s a tight story that’s not quite as bizarre as Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla, but still plenty weird enough to entertain and delight the imagination.  Its got great human characters and great characterization for its monsters as well (they have arcs!  They develop!  It’s great!).  This is the reasonable standard by which kaiju movies should be judged - this is the solid A grade kaiju film.  Plus it gives you a good understanding of four of the most famous/important kaiju characters to exist - Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah - and so just for that it deserves to be viewed as a primer.
Runners Up for this category: Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (just as many good qualities as Ghidorah but sadly lacks Mothra), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) (just as many good qualities as Ghidorah but sadly lacks King Ghidorah and Rodan), Gorgo (I may get hate for this but Gorgo is not only a kaiju film, but a very good metric to judge solo kaiju films - an A Grade for a kaiju movie with just one main monster)
Fifth Intro to Kaiju Marathon Film - Gojira/Godzilla (1954)
If you want to see what a completely straight-laced, horror-centric, utterly serious kaiju movie could be, you have to go with the original: the Japanese cut of the 1954 Godzilla movie.  It is a dark, somber, political, and legitimately unnerving film, with some great cinematography, marvelous acting, and an utterly gripping conflict at the heart of it.  It treats its central monster as a character while still mining the monster movie concept for all the horror and tragedy it could muster, and if you do a little research on it (such as learning that the opening scene of a fishing boat suddenly being hit with an unexpected explosion of radioactivity was based on a REAL incident where a fishing boat was caught in the crossfire of a secret US nuclear test on the Bikini atoll, or how Godzilla’s rampage is designed to recall the firebombings that were inflicted upon Japan in WW2) you’ll realize it was a very daring film for its time as well.  It is more than deserving of its status as a classic.
Runners Up for this category: Shin Godzilla (if black and white movies aren’t your thing, this has many of the same good qualities as Godzilla while being far more modern, though I think it is more effective in the context of the Godzilla movies that preceded it), Cloverfield (similarly serious and horrifying as Godzilla, but not quite as complex story-wise nor as good character-wise - plus the found footage style can put some people off)

Transformers: Skyfall. Like Real People Do
((Mun Note: So I wrote this forever ago for @light-edge-with-a-blog. Before the boy got himself a blog. I still REALLY proud of it and thought I would share it with everyone else too.))
The time got away from me. I don’t know how. Normally, I was pretty good at keeping track of my day. However, when I was with the Autobots, on their base, with Light-Edge and his adopted family; I don’t know… Something about them eased me. Team Prime eased me. Unbelievable. I had read Decepticon intel upon Decepticon intel on how ruthless and traitorous they where. Yet, they were so close. All of them. They where a family.
The Decepticons were never that close. We were comrades, partners, brothers-in-arms and team mates; never anything that could be considered a risk. Yes, there was pairing offs. Pits, Night Glide and I got bonded during the War. However, we were the odd balls. Most of the time, it was aggressive bots just trying to...blow off steam.
The Great War molded Team Prime into something greater than anything the Decepticons could have imagined. And slowly, I was being integrated into it. ‘Slowly’ was the key word here. It was still pretty split when I would show up. The younger members; Bumblebee, Smokescreen and Light-Edge (along with Optimus Prime) had pretty much welcomed me since day one. The others not so much. I was still very much a Decepticon to them.
Maybe this was part of Optimus Prime’s grandmaster plan. To show his team that the War was really over. I thought that at first. I thought that the Prime was just using me to get the closeted and shy Light-Edge out more.
Poor kid. He was from Earth, supposedly in status throughout the whole war. Of course, the ‘Cons had no documentation of the mech. Something to do with the human military force finding him first. I’m not to sure. I was never got much on Light-Edge’s backstory. It was clear that he was hurting though. Ratchet and Arcee followed him around like a pair of hawks. He was sick or something to the like. I was never told what it was. It wasn’t my business to know.
Light-Edge was so dissociated when I first met him, all those months ago.
Yet, upon Prime’s secret orders, I started coming to the base. I started to get to know Light-Edge. I started to get to know the members of Team Prime. Everyone began to open up and enjoy my company. And I was enjoying theirs.
To the point where I was steadily powering down on Light-Edge’s shoulder one late and stormy night. The solar winds had brought the summer heat from the Sea of Rust over Metroplex like a blanket; making everyone hazy in function. The first really muggy summer since we all returned. Most of the bots where readjusting. Expect for Light-Edge. The humans pulled him out of a desert on their planet. The mechling was used to it.
I felt my helm dip one last time. It clinked off of Light-Edge’s shoulder plating with a quiet ‘tink’. I finally gave up and yawned. The mechling I was sitting on chuckled in amusement as I lifted my arms over my head to stretch.
“What?” He asked, smirking softly, “Earth cinema not good enough for your Cybertronian palette?”
“It’s not that.” I yawned once again, “Gamera: Guardian of the Universe is clearly a masterpiece that needs to be preserved for generations to come.”
I slowly slid down his outstretched arm to look at him face to face. I smiled wearily and added, “It’s late, kiddo. I don’t know what you do all day, but I have work in the morning.”
There was a crack of lighting outside the base. I could hear the rain pounding off the roof. I didn’t need to look out the mechling’s cramped room window to know that the rain was pouring down in sheets. He looked at me with great disapproval.
“You’re going home? In this?” Light-Edge said dryly. He gestured to the downpour blowing pass his window.
“That? You?” He continued, “You’d get blown away.”
“I can walk.”
“You’ll get swept up in the streets.”
“Then I’ll call for a pick up.”
“Night Glide will get hit by lightning.”
I smirked. “You have an answer for everything, don’t you?”
The blue mechling huffed. He crossed his arms and tried to give me a tough face. However, the mechling was still a mechling. It came out more like a pout then anything resembling a threat.
“I just don’t want you to go home in this. It’s too dangerous, Sky.”
“I agree with Light-Edge.”
My helm swiveled to the door where Ratchet, the Autobots head medic, was making his way into the room. Medical kit in hand.
Light-Edge’s nightly diagnostic. I scampered to Light-Edge’s other arm as Ratchet didn’t skip a beat and began to set up for the mechling’s tests.
“I haven’t seen winds like this in eons. You’re too small to make the journey across the city on your own.”
“Jeez, thanks for the vote of confidence, Ratchet.”
Ratchet didn’t even look at me as he lifted a digit to silence me. “I’ve repaired enough Minicons before the war to know what their physical limitations are.”
The old bot took Light-Edge wrist and plugged in one of his scanners. Ratchet paused for a moment before added briefly, “As Light-Edge said; we don’t want to see you get hurt, Skyfall.”
I smiled softly upon hearing that. Ratchet was a bit of a hard bot. Four million years of war made his bedside manners less than to be desired, but underneath all that flaking plating was a spark of gold. Even when he didn’t want to admit it.
Ratchet waved me off; trying to shoo me off of Light-Edge’s shoulder. I took to the air to avoid his servos.
“You two sparklings can finish your movie once I finish here.” Ratchet said, “Now, shoo. You’re a distraction.”
“Sparkling? I’m only 400,000 years younger then Arcee.”
“Well, you’re a sparkling compared to me. Shoo, will you?”
Ratchet continued to bat the air in front of me. Light-Edge was finding this very amusing. He was laughing by the time I retreated to the doorway. Light-Edge waved at me. I waved back. Ratchet grumbled as he returned back to the blue mechling’s side.
“Really now. Minicons.”
Outside Light-Edge’s dorm, I stretched out my arms and wings. I turned on my peds, walking towards the common area of the base. The large hanger was filled to the brim with the rest of the other Autobots; lounging around to avoid the summer storm outside.
Bumblebee and Smokescreen where sparring while the rest of Team Prime watched and chatted among themselves. The clashing of fists was almost as loud as their trash talk. I couldn't help, but chuckle. Mechs would be mechs. The two rounded pass me as I entered the room.
“Hey, Sky!” Smokescreen said cheerfully, pinning Bee’s arm painfully by sitting on the poor mechling, “Not going home in this, are you?”
The bots started tumbling once more. I sidestepped out of the way. Bee gave his partner a swift kick. Smoke fell like a bundle of bricks.
Bumblebee added, “Need a ride home?”
“I'm staying here for the night. Doctor’s and Light-Edge’s orders.”
The sure fire sound of Optimus Prime’s peds came echoing throughout the chamber. The roughhousing nearly stopped when he came into the room. Almost. Prime looked fondly at his team, then his optics fell onto me.
“Both Ratchet and Light-Edge are wise to think that.” Optimus said, “We have plenty of space for you to stay until the storm passes, Skyfall.”
“Oh, hell yeah,” Smokescreen remarked. The mechling’s doorwings were bouncing with excitement. “I always wanted to do a sleepover ever since the kids ever talked about!”
Bumblebee’s servo shot up straight into the air, “I call first pick for movies!”
Somewhere down the hallway, Light-Edge retorted. His answer echoing off the metal walls.
“We’re still watching Gamera!”
Ratchet also sighed. Seemed like wrangling three energetic young mechs was a full time job. My spark swelled up, once again amazed by the seamless family they had all became. I giggled, but it quickly because loud and clear with delight.
I had not felt a something like this since I was with Jetstream and her trine.
A wave of bittersweet washed over my spark; making it heavy with the memory. Sure, I was bonded. And yes, Glide and I were a family. However, it was just the two of us against the world for such a long time. Something deep in my coding always longed for more though.
Night Glide was raised a Vosian Seeker. He was cool and distant. Affectionate, but never openly showed it. Ever since we came home, he worked long days. He was a cop, after all. Even with the battles over, there was still grudges that would arise.
I was working a lot myself. Immigration and all that. A lot of my free time, I was responding to emails from off world colonies or here. Helping with Light-Edge’s reintegration into our society.
Our schedules never quite lined up anymore.
I don’t know. Maybe I was overthinking this. Maybe I was lonely. Or maybe I was greedy and wanted more. Whatever it was; I pushed it down and enjoyed the rest of my evening.
It went as well I one would expect what three mechs would think would be entertaining. It was a B-movie marathon. I was introduced to a wide array of Earth films; ranging from slashers to spaghetti westerns. All of them equally trouble in their own unique ways. I don’t think I’ve laughed as hard in a long time then listening to Smokescreen’s and Light-Edge’s constant commentary.
At some point, Knock Out came and joined us as well. Another follow fan of the art form. The medic would regal about his time sneaking into the parking lots of Earth’s drive-in theaters with his partner, Breakdown; watching the local picture show. The former ‘Con seemed a little down over the memory. He was hiding it though through wit. I knew that he and Breakdown where close, but I guess the scars of war hadn’t healed just yet for the red sportscar.
Slowly, as the night and storm dragged on, one by one; the mechs turned in for the night. I was set up in a spare dormitory next to Light-Edge’s room. That’s where I found myself just unable to sleep. Not for the reason I thought I would either. I thought I wouldn’t sleep being so close to the Autobots, but in reality, I couldn’t sleep without my carrier.
I was just used to being held in my carrier’s deployer compartment. I had not (or at least very rarely) ever just recharged on my own. I was used to the warmth and feeling of safety that being in my carrier provided. It also was a good way to mentally unwind too. Hooking up to my carrier provided me a safe way to ‘unload’ my emotional stress as well. It was easier to share the anxiety between two, then to suffer alone.
As another hour clocked by, I finally gave up. I shifted from my alt. mode (my prefered charging state) and sat up in the massive berth I was provided. I looked towards the wall where I could hear Light-Edge sleep peacefully. I groaned in embarrassment. I had two options:
Ask for help with this predicament.
Or risk not getting any charge and crashing at work.
Ask for help with this predicament.
Or risk not getting any charge and crashing at work.
I swallowed my pride. I hopped out of berth, crept into the hallway and peeked into the blue mechling’s room.
The kid was powered down, breathing softly as I tip toed closer to his berth. On cue, like he knew I needed something, his optics dimmed online. Light-Edge yawned and lazily stretched. My wings hung close to the floor. I immediately fault stupid over this and regretted my actions.
“Hey…” He mumbled, “What’s up, Sky…?”
It took me a moment to answer. My mouth suddenly went dry. I also felt so much smaller. Light-Edge tilted his helm in concern when I didn’t say anything right away. Though, he waited until I was able to piece my words together.
“I have the dumbest question...”
“It’s not a stupid question if you were willing to wake me up in the middle of the night to get an answer.” The mechling gave me a haft smile. He lowered his servo to allow me to hop up onto his berth and sit next to him. “What’s wrong? You seem upset.”
“Not upset. Just...embarrassed.” I looked up at him. I smiled weakly. “I can’t sleep.”
Light-Edge chuckled, “That all?”
“Yeah. Normally have Night Glide around.”
“Used to having another person to share the berth or something?”
“More like used to sleeping in the other person.”
Light-Edge raised a puzzled eyebrow. A tired chuckle escaped me. I leaned back. I rested my helm against the larger bot’s shoulder plate. Light-Edge shifted and curled an arm around me. I smiled weakly. That helped a bit.
“It’s a Minicon thing.” I explained, “I link up with my carrier every night and power down with them. I’ve been doing it for so long that it just feels...weird not charging like that.”
“So, you just need a box or space like that to sleep in?” Light-Edge said.
“Something like that. Yeah.”
“What about my trunk?”
I blinked. Wait? He was going for it? Actually?
He chuckled. My confusion must have been plain to see. He pointed over his shoulder with his spare arm.
“My trunk.” He repeated, “It’s on my back. Do you just want to charge in there? You’re not going to bother me. I’ve slept through much worst.”
It took me a moment for his words to actually sink into my mind. Slowly, I felt a chuckle creep up my throat. My turbines whirled to life as Light-Edge sat up. He offered me a servo to land on while he smiled. With a click, the hatch between his shoulder blades opened. Light-Edge rested his forehead against mine.
“Night, Skyfall.”
“Night, Light-Edge.”
He pulled away as I took off from his servo; transforming into my jet mode. I rounded his shoulder and landed squarely in the back of his trunk. It closed behind me. I settled in the darkness; feeling a hundred times better. Comforted in the metallic blanket I was wrapped in. Soothed by internal hums and machinery.
I found myself listening to the consistency of Light-Edge’s sparkbeat. Every spark had a different rhythm then the one next to it. Every bot was it’s own little song. It’s own little record spinning through the cosmos. Light-Edge’s spark was no different. His spark steady and calming. Melodic. Much like the bot it belong to.
It ended being my own personal lullaby. I was asleep before I knew it.
***
I missed my home. The one that was thousands of millions of light years away.
On a blue, glassy planet was my home. The only one that I had known in my short life. The sand and rock of Jasper. The vistas and the nearly endless expanse of the desert skies. How quiet and peaceful it all was.
I missed my family. My mom and my friends; Raf and Miko. I hadn’t seen them since I came here. I missed watching movies, playing video games, working on my bike in the garage...the warmth of my mother’s hug.
I missed so much of my homeworld. So, so, much.
I wasn’t this. What I become. I was a monster now; a mess of wires and metal and energon. Ratchet made me like this to keep me alive. Yet now I had to keep up a living lie. I couldn't become what Optimus wanted me to. Now I'm stuck. In between something I am and something alien.
My name was Light-Edge.
I am Jack Darby.
We were Skyfall.
I gasped for air as if I was drowning in mercury. No. It was Ratchet’s cybermatter. Or at least the memories of it. I floundered. My frame felt slow and sluggish; my processors trying to catch up with the rest of me. My interfacing cables unplugged themselves as I began to realize what was happening. I had plugged myself into-
“JACK!”
The kid was screaming. I knew why. Oh Primus, I knew why. From the bottom of my spark, all the way through my wiring; I realized with crystal clarity was if I felt every fiber he was feeling that he felt every inch of mine. And I had four million years of wars, surgery and abuse on top of his meager nineteen.
“JACK!” I yelled once more, but the bot- boy- kid, was still screaming.
He probably couldn’t hear me under all the plating. I went to eject. Yet, the way was firmly locked. Jack was on his back. He probably woke up from a dead charge like this and didn’t understand what was happening.
Against better judgement, I did the only thing I could do while trapped within my carrier. I plugged myself back in.
Somewhere between our two minds was the meeting point. Every carrier/deployer had one. It was the space where our two hafts became one; where the passing of knowledge was seamless. I knew he was there. What I didn’t expect was to find the human; not the mech, doubled over in pain and sobbing.
“Sweet Solus Prime...”
I came over to him; finally eye to eye with each other. I set a servo on his back and traced it along his spine. Jack sputtered out a gasp. Wild blue eyes looked up at me with both confusion and relief. I smiled weakly; pulling him into a hug. Jack grabbed onto my back plates like it was the last things on Cybertron. In our combine minds, they might as well be. I continued to rub his back to calm him.
“I know…” I cooed softly, “I’m so sorry… You’re ok now, kiddo. It was just a bad dream-”
“No, that wasn’t.” I heard muffled against my plating, “That was real. That happened. To you.”
Slowly, his shaky hands wrapped themselves around my helm’s filigree. I had thought I was used to Jack’s striking eyes by this point. Yet, his steel blue eyes looked so heartbroken. So, concerned for me. Let alone his own well being.
I think that hurt more than the fact I just traumatized him with eons of my memories.
“Why didn’t you tell me about any of this?” He asked.
My breathing hitched. I tilted my helm to nuzzle into his palm. I gave Jack the only answer I had.
“Cause I’m still working through it.” It wasn’t a lie. “It hurts, but not as much as it used to.”
My servos brought him closer in the hug, “I’m sorry that I dragged you into all of this, Jack. It’s-”
A pop up window flashed before me. I felt my face scrunch up as I pulled myself away from Jack to read it. Jack swiveled his head to see it as well; looking as completely lost as I was feeling. His eyes flickered as he tried to read what I had already finished.
Primus, no.
“Sky?” He questioned, “I’m not up to date on my Cybertronian. What is that?”
I let the boy go quickly. A hissed slipped through my teeth. I closed the window. Then opened one of my own. Jack finally got to his feet as I began to furiously type on a holoboard.
“Sky?” Jack’s fear was starting to creep back into his voice.
My screen crashed. The keyboard disappeared. I looked quickly at the boy before Ratchet forcefully ejected me from my current carrier. Both carrier and deployer where screaming with my removal.
Ratchet should have known better. With our two minds linked like that; it was similar to a psychic patch. It was mutual. A symbiotic process. A respectful partnership.
It wasn’t as abrasive as the patch. However, a forced deployer ejection was just as dangerous. Luckily, (or out of the medic’s skill) it didn’t outright kill the both of us. It just felt like our bodies where being ripped in half.
Though, I have a feeling that the old medic was pressured into it.
I could barely figure out what was happening before I was unceremoniously dumped onto the main hanger’s floor. Ratchet’s voice was coming down the hallway; trying to calm down Jack. I was caught under the seething gaze of Jack’s guardian, Acree.
“What the frag where you thinking?!” The blue femme screamed at me.
Terror ripped through my body. My intakes hitched as I backed off from the femme. Arcee closed the gap between us. My mouth hung agape. I was shaking; from my helm to my wings. A crossed Arcee was a dangerous one. I had read about it in Decepticon reports. She was quick; precise and more often than not, vindictive when concerning her partners. I think out of all of Team Prime’s warriors, besides Prime himself, I feared her the most.
“Are you going to say anything, ‘Con?”
The two-wheeler was looking for answers. Ones that I didn’t have. My mind was blank. My mouth was as dry as those solar winds that brought us this horrible summer storm. I couldn’t even breathe. I was just staring up at Arcee. Like an complete idiot.
Maybe I was just a dumb Decepticon.
“Arcee, leave her alone!”
Thunderous peds falls came crashing down the hallway. I couldn’t figure out who it was at first until they were right on top of us; wedged between me and Arcee. The bot did cause Acree to back off slightly.
Light-Edge was standing over me. The mechling had his shielding on and firmly pointing it towards his partner. He was glaring. I had never seen him like that. Arcee had a look of surprise. So, it must have been a rarity. I, on the other hand, felt tears roll down my cheeks. It was as if an invisible servo was squeezing my spark.
...What was I doing here?
“Arcee, I know that you’re scared.” Light-Edge said calmly. Yet, firmly. He was making a point to her. “Hell, I’m weirded out too. I’m still getting used to all of this Cybertronian head probing stuff, but I don’t think Skyfall intended this to happen. It was a mistake.”
Light-Edge looked down towards me. His face softened once he noticed I was crying.
“Isn’t that right, Sky?” He said gently.
I nodded. Slowly, at first. My processor unable to anything more than that. I croaked on a sob. My helm nodded faster. Oh Primus, if I could speak, it would have been a long string of apologizes. Instead, I just pulled up my knees to sob into them. The only thing I could do. My spark ached. I couldn’t tell from what anymore. Fear, guilt, the reopening of old scars. All things where equal in my mind.
Arcee seemed to understand my complete lack of vocal communication. The femme’s stance shifted. Her shoulders sank. Her optics went distant with thought. After a moment, she vented out a sigh. Light-Edge straightened out; putting his shield generators away. Carefully, the mechling lifted me off the floor. And in an ironic twist of fate; it was now my turn to cling to him for dear life.
The stalemate between Light-Edge and Arcee only lasted a moment. Ratchet came stomping towards us. The older mech simply glared all three of down in complete disappointment. Like a sire scolding his sparklings. That made me feel even smaller in Light-Edge’s grasp.
“That’s enough from the three of you.” He hissed lowly, “You’re going to wake up the whole base if you keep this up. The heat is getting to you.”
He jabbed an accusing digit at Arcee first. “You know better. Skyfall has been coming here for months. Optimus even approved it himself.” The old mech flattered for a moment as he glanced at Jack, “She was bound to find out about all of this. Sooner or later.”
Ratchet’s optics fell on me briefly. He opened his arms towards Light-Edge and gestured, “Give her to me. I need to look her over. And go back to bed.” He eyed Acree again, “Both of you.”
“But Ratchet-” Light-Edge started to protest as the medic plucked me from his hold. Ratchet shot him another glare.
“That’s enough.” Ratchet retorted.
With a defeated sigh, Light-Edge nodded. He made his way back towards his room; disappearing into the dark corridor. Arcee didn’t leave right away. She was simply staring at where Jack had ventured. Ratchet shifted me in his arms.
“He’s fine, Arcee.”
She hummed softly in thought. Finally, Acree broke rank. She walked passed us; patting Ratchet’s shoulder plating as she did. Perhaps as a way to either thank him or apologize. The femme went down another hallway. Ratchet huffed a sigh out of his vents.
The old medic walked over and set me on to a table to properly examine me. I was surprised how careful Ratchet was in doing so. Even to a Minicon like myself. After taking my vitals and running a few tests, Ratchet sighed quietly in what I would like to believe was relief.
“Everything checks out. Would you like some help getting back into bed?”
There was a beat of silence between us. I looked back up at the old medic and whispered, “You saved his life...”
Ratchet was caught off guard by my comment. He hid it well. He ignored me at first; choosing to pack his equipment. Though, it slowed until he sighed heavily. There was regret in his eyes when he looked over his shoulder to see me.
“...Did I?” Ratchet mused, “You would know better then I would. You were the one that was linked to him, after all.”
I hummed. Newly adopted memories of Earth flooded my mind. That feeling of loneliness. The feeling of homesickness. That feeling of being trapped on a completely alien world in all sense of the word.
That feeling of being loved by a family. Both biological. And found.
I smiled weakly.
“You did, but he needs an outlet.” I looked up at the big mech, “He needs something to do. You can’t keep him locked up in here. He’s a good kid, Ratchet. If you were worried about him not fitting in, keeping him sheltered from Cybertron isn’t going to help. Let him help us. Let him help us rebuild. And let him go back to Earth and see his family.”
I chuckled softly and added, “Though… I have a feeling that I didn’t need to tell you any of that…”
Ratchet’s big shoulders sagged slowly. The silence fell between us once again. The rain outside was not as vicious. The winds not so harsh. Ratchet turned on his ped and offered a servo to climb onto. It was a moment before he spoke again.
“Sometimes I need a reminder…”
I smiled a little bit more and stepped into his hand.

Now for some George and Harold headcanons
George
Due to his fear of blood, he dreads going to the hospital.
His fear of blood became clear when he was only 4 years old. He had to get his finger pricked for blood testing. As soon as he saw his bleeding finger, the poor little guy fainted. The upside that came out of it was that as soon as he woke back up, the nurse gave him some chocolate and a juice box to help him feel better.
Because of his sensitivity to loud noises, his parents got him sound-blocking headphones one year for his birthday. He likes to use them sometimes when he’s writing by himself.
He became a fan of The Little Rascals at a young age. He found some of his dad’s old tapes of the show and became instantly hooked. Not long after, they got their two cats, and he begged his parents to let him name them. Moses couldn’t help but feel a bit proud when George named one of the cats after his favorite character, Buckwheat.
Since his dad is a mechanic, George likes to watch him work on cars sometimes, and usually helps by handing him the tools he needs.
He loves adventure movies. Indiana Jones is easily one of his favorites, but even to this day, he still covers his eyes during the “Ark of the Covenant” scene...
His first date with Lisa was Comic Con of all things. He told her several times that she didn’t have to cosplay if she didn’t want to, but when he came to her place to pick her up, and she answered the door in a Wonder Woman costume, complete with metal bracelets and a Lasso of Truth... he knew she was the one for him.
Harold
He actually became a fan of The Three Stooges thanks to his Mom. She even taught him how to do the little finger snapping trick Curly does.
He once had a sixth goldfish named “Dr. Fine”, but... Superfang ate him. He’s been in a separate fishbowl ever since.
He was both shocked and thrilled when he found out that his elementary school was named after his favorite of The Three Stooges; Curly.
The first time he ever drew Sad Worm was on the first Father’s Day after his parents’ divorce.
In fact, Sad Worm has become a bit of an emotional tell when it comes to Harold. If you see him doodling Sad Worm, that’s when you know he’s upset about something. The two people that know this better than anyone are his mom and George.
He will never admit it to his face, but Captain is the closest thing he’s had to a father figure since his dad left.
He once left an anonymous homemade Father’s Day card in Mr. Krupp’s office. And Mr. Krupp would never admit it, but he was genuinely touched that one of his students actually felt that way.
He sometimes gets roped into playing dress-up with his sister Heidi, but he doesn’t really mind most of the time. Seeing Heidi so happy makes it all worth it.
He, George, and Heidi do group theme costumes for Halloween almost every year. Their moms help them make the costumes, and each have a scrapbook filled with photos of them. Harold’s particular favorite was the year that their theme was “Japanese Monster Movies”; he was Gamera, George was Godzilla, and Heidi was Mothra.
Until Dav says otherwise, I’m convinced that Harold introduced George to Lisa.
After George told him about his and Lisa’s first date at Comic Con, the first thing out of Harold’s mouth was, “Oh, she’s a keeper!”
One of his guilty pleasure movies is Zeus and Roxanne, because it has his two favorite animals in it; dogs and dolphins.
During one of his piano lessons, he asked if his teacher could teach him to play the Free Willy theme. And much to his surprise, his teacher said yes. When he finally learned to play the whole song, his teacher actually cried.
His first date with Billy was simple; they just stayed in and had a movie marathon. Upon seeing Billy’s extensive collection of Anime and Kaiju films, Harold just about geeked out.
He and Billy develop a secondary language with each other; movie quotes and references. George finds it hilarious.

Random ask out of nowhere but I am watching marathon Mystery Science Theater and thought of asking what is your favorite episode or joke from said show?
I love this question, though it is almost impossible to answer as I have so many favourites!
Like with many things it depends on on my mood as to my favourite on any given day XD. Space Mutiny, Hobgoblins, Touch of Satan, Boggy Creek 2, Final Sacrifice, Final Justice, Manos, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, Time Chasers, Gamera Vs Zigra, Being from Another Planet, Santa Claus, Projected Man, The Day the Earth Froze, Samson Vs the Vampire Women...there are so many and they’re all so quotable.
I’d say Hobgoblins is one of the most quotable episodes, I cannot help myself when anyone mentions the 80′s I have to sing ‘it’s the 80′s, do a lot of drugs and vote for Ronal Reegan!’
I also love all the banter around the crew member who gets killed in Space Mutiny (’Look alive people...sorry Susan’) as well as ‘railing kill!’. Between my sister and I we can quote most of Touch of Satan (We are particularly fond of ‘don’t spook the walnuts’ and ‘that’s a nice maverick mind if I skip rocks across it?’) and The Day the Earth Froze (the entirety of the ‘failure’ song the SOL crew sing for the protagonist!).
And that doesn’t even cover all the between movie segments and songs performed by Joel, Mike, Jonah and all the mads.  From Joel’s ‘it stinks!’ to poor Mike being traumatised by gold bikini Crow, there are SO MANY funny lines and skits and gags.  The show is just so quick and ridiculous I can go back and watch the same episode and be blindsided by a joke I completely forgot about.
So yeah, that’s just a shortlist of some of the episodes and quotes I love, and I probably missed a whole load more XD. Thank you for asking!
