The ovules of all gametophytic mutants found thus far have normal sporophytic (2N) cells – that is, normal nucleus, integuments, funiculus, and megaspore mother cell.

Everyone compares pollen to semen, but it's not the same thing at all.
See, with flowering plants, what you're seeing is the sporophyte. It doesn't actually have sex itself. Instead, plants that have "female" parts have separate little plants growing inside their flowers. These are the female gametophytes, which do have sex.
However, plants with "male" parts don't have male gametophytes in them. Instead, they have pollen, which will become male gametophytes when it gets to a female gametophyte.
In other words, pollen isn't like sperm--it's like an egg with little men in it.

There are two main categories of SI systems in plants, both of which are defined by the incompatibility phenotype of the pollen grain (Figure 21.19).

The hostility many contemporary self-styled "old school" Dungeons & Dragons players have toward the idea of a game with clearly stated design goals is so weird to me because, like, D&D has historically been one of the most over-explained games on the planet.
Just from glancing over the books I happen to have within arm's reach at the time of this posting, the equipment chapter in the 2nd Edition Dungeon Master's Guide cold opens with an essay titled "A Short History of Commerce", which at one point digresses into a discussion of international currency exchange in the Byzantine Empire. The Monstrous Manual defines the words "sporophyte" and "gametophyte". The Player's Handbook devotes two solid pages to teaching the reader how to visually distinguish among eighteen kinds of polearms. Do you wanna know what the difference between a guisarme and a guisarme-voulge is? Too bad – you're gonna learn!
"Old school Dungeons & Dragons isn't supposed to lecture you about its design goals" yeah, tell me you started with 3rd Edition without telling me you started with 3rd Edition.

Undergrad field work Pamela Isley!
On her shirt is a fern gametophyte and the funny little saying I made up to remember that they are the sex ones. Also fern gametophytes can be shaped like hearts which is really cute : )

just came across this blog. in love with the idea of plants with mobile / "bug"-like seeds. how does gardening / farming work when the seeds might not stay where you planted them?
Depends a lot on the species! Feathervanes have developed a variety of strategies for dispersing, and some have evolved out of motile life stages entirely! However, for the motile species that do get farmed, those that don’t naturally die after a couple of days are usually drowned or smoked to kill the gametophyte while preserving the spore within prior to planting, and the mechanical act of pressing them into the dirt often damages the legs anyway.
However, the real challenge is figuring out how to harvest them before they wander off. There are plenty of solutions to this as well, but here are a few common examples;
Exhibit a: simple cultivate a crop whose gametophytes are too large or clumsy to escape the ovary. This crop derived from a plant whose “walking seeds” were built to emerge simultaneously in a very short time span, and before the development of this cultivar its harvest had to be carefully timed to *just* before emergence time.

Exhibit b: A treelike species whose gametophytes climb the tall stalk of the parent and wait on the branches to be carried off by avians. While collecting them from branch tips is possible, many farmers found it much easier to simply attach a disc a few feet above the ground to halt their progress to hard to access heights.
Exhibit c: Moats/trenches are utilized both as an efficient growing technique and to trap any escaping gametophytes, which can then be scooped up from the bottom.

What's funny about flowering plants is that the big plant you're looking at (sporophyte) is never male, female, or even both. Instead, in its flowers it makes separate, smaller plants (gametophytes) that are themselves male or female--the females are called "ovules," and the males are pollen! These little plants are what actually make sperm and eggs and have sex.
So in other words, plants aren't sexed according to their own sex. They're sexed according to whether they "give birth" to male children, female children, or both.

Did ypu delete your main?
i did! in fact, this blog is the last blog i have remaining on this great webbed site tungle dot edu, and i moved it to another account following only like 3 people, so i only can use it to post original plantposts. I have an exported copy of all my blogs on a hard drive, but other than that they all have been nuked from orbit. i think i only ever posted my main like once on here, but if youre one of the few followers of this blog who knew what it was, thats the explanation lmao.
there are several major reasons i did it, but a pertinent one is because i am entering a gametophyte stage. i'm switching jobs too! still working with plants, but i won't be in the lab anymore starting two weeks from this past friday. i'm sure i'll end up posting about it.

Phylum Round 1

Flowering Plants vs Funky Little Guys
Magnoliophyta: flowering plants! Also known as angiosperms. Where to begin? There are so many plants in this phylum. Not just every single flower, but also if you enjoy eating it, drinking it, or smoking it, it's probably in this taxon.
Anthocerotophyta: hornworts! Where to begin? They're closely related to mosses and liverworts, and like them have rhyzoids instead of roots, and have to absorb water from their surroundings directly rather than transporting it with xylem. They have alternation of generations, but unlike vascular plants the gametophyte generation, not the sporophyte generation, is dominant. They are found worldwide, but prefer damp environments, and there are somewhere between 100-300 known species. They are named for the horn-like shape of their sporophytes. The gametophyte generally forms a rosette or ribbon-like thallus, not leaves.
