Clerks Jay - Listen. The GENDER. Not enough is said on the gender envy factor of Clerks Era Jay. The baseball cap we sadly never see again, the hair up to show off the buzzed sides, the little necklace, the huge earring. He doesn’t feel like he’s wearing a costume, either. Throughout the film clothes come off, go back on, hair goes up and down and moves through various stages of dishevelled, as he fucks around outside the Quickstop all day. It’s one of those details that make him feel more real. This is the Jay who’s probably most like someone you’ve known, for better, or worse. For as minor as his role in the film is, as well, he has some depth to him that get’s sadly overlooked. Boy steps up to defend Veronica before anyone else, even though his conversation with Dante is overshadowed by Silent Bob’s one iconic line. Degenerate with a heart of gold, and one of my top Jays. (9/10)

Mallrats Jay - Brother vibes. Mallrats Jay is pure brother vibes. He is both your little brother and your big brother, and he is not as cool as he thinks he is, either way. His breath smells like stale Monster (that you had to buy for him), and he has never washed his arse correctly in his life. Would flip you off your chair and break your elbow for a handful of fries, but he would also beat up your bullies for you (with help from Silent Bob, of course). Also very gender, but not in the same way as Clerks Jay. Mallgender, great silhouette. Somehow much cuddlier. I would cuddle him. (7/10)

Chasing Amy Jay - Moody. The moodiest bitch. Beam me up, Stroppy. This is Jay in such a foul fucking mood, it almost stops him being funny. Almost. Apparently, anger makes him fluffier, too. He’s strangely fluffy when he appears. Yet another example of Jay giving the same opinions as Silent Bob, just in a crasser way, and so getting overlooked. And speaking of Bob, points for the subtle callback to Jay’s previously established repressed bisexuality and his crush on Silent Bob, via jealousy towards ex-girlfriend. (6/10)

Chasing Dogma Jay - “Ew” is, perhaps, a strong word, but.....hhhuuuuggggmmmnng 😬. Sincerely, certified worst Jay. Kevin Smith took Jay’s sex pest tendencies and jacked them up to eleven, here. I’m not trying to clutch pearls, it’s just not funny. It’s long been established that Jay frequently has women tell him to fuck off, even pepper spray him for being pushy and annoying. And he is both of these things. However, in the movies we never see him forcibly grab women, or threaten them with violence. This Jay does both, and it honestly feels like a huge departure for the Jay we’ve seen previously. Both Clerks Jay and Mallrats Jay were shown to have female friends. I struggle to imagine this Jay having any, because feels genuinely unsafe to be around. And while it’s not out of character for him to expect sex as a reward for heroism, the implication that he wouldn’t have saved Bethany if Bob hadn’t gone for it first does feel out of character. #NotMyJay. The only saving grace of this Jay is his few cute moments with Bob, as well as almost coming out to him during a tirade. (4/10)

Dogma Jay - Now this. This is some good Jay right here. This is about the last we see of moody bitch Jay, established in the previous two iterations. But, in spite of that, he is not without his sweet side. Boy couldn’t care less about the world ending, but you refuse his “girlfriend’s” request and make her sad? You get your expensive shit stolen. That’ll teach you. This is the film that really pumped out the ship fuel for JayBob and you can see why. I’m convinced the main reason Jay is one of the prophets is that he is Bob’s emotional support jackass, that is his primary role. Looking and acting every inch the repressed bisexual he is CONFIRMED to be. But honestly, this look? Best Jay look since Clerks. Ear, nose and tongue pierced. Got his catchphrase on his beanie. Look at that cosy outfit, our boy is so warm. Chasing Dogma explained that these are not, in fact, Jay’s clothes, hence why they don’t fit. But he looks so damn snuggly in that huge jacket, and the red/black/grey combo looks so good on him. (8/10)

Clerks: The Animated Series Jay - Everyone shut up and look at him! Look at his cheeky little face. He’s just a little guy. Just a little prankster. He does a gay little walk that pisses you off. Bless this little man, I love him so much. (10/10)

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Jay - To fit the lighter tone of the film, Jay goes back to something closer to his Mallrats appearance. Manchild, rather than manteenager. School boy with a crush. He even gets addressed as “Little Kid” by different characters throughout the film, like it’s acknowledging this. This film has a lot of fans divided, but even if you’re not a fan of the View Askewniverse, or Jay and Silent Bob as a duo, I think it would be hard to hate this Jay. There is something very innocent and genuine about him. We see what is alluded to in Clerks, that Jay really just wants a kind, sweet partner. Also, this is possibly Jay’s best known outfit, either due to the popularity of the film, or just how bright it is. Honestly, I like it. Especially the Berserker shirt, he’s still supporting Olaf! (8/10)

Clerks II Jay - My wife. My cupcake. My actual fucking babygirl. I want to sit him on my lap and hand feed him his Mooby meal. I fucking love Clerks II Jay. He feels like if Clerks Jay got some character development. He’s still rowdy, still horny, still not too bright, but he’s getting softer. He’s getting more self aware. He’s on the cusp of something. This Jay probably wakes up in Silent Bob’s arms each morning, because he’s remembering to be grateful for the good things in his life (Because Silent Bob is such a good, friendly friend, thats completely and totally it). The little old ladies at church love him, they’re always tucking his hair behind his ears. There is something so fun and sweet about Jay and Bob carrying around that little pocket Bible, knowing they actually met God not too many years ago. I just love it, I really wish they had stuck with this. Also, the little flicks in this Jay’s hair, and his coat that can easily slip off the shoulder live in my head, rent free. (11/10)

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot/Clerks III Jay - Look, I know. I know that Reboot was cringe. I know that Smith and Mewes looked like old men struggling to do what used to come naturally. But Reboot touched my heart, okay. Look at this man. Look at this old, undiagnosed, moderately freshly out of the closet man. He finally passed the cusp he was on in Clerks II. Watch him attempt to protect and bond with his long lost daughter, whom he loved almost immediately. Watch him cry over all the years he missed out on raising her. He’s running a business with his not so heterosexual life mate. Probably believes they’ll have to elope to Fiji to make it official, or something. He pretends dealing is still illegal in the area for the nostalgia. He agrees to help Randal make his film, and happily distracts the hospital staff so an ill Dante can watch it. Why? Because the clerks are his friends now. He’s too old to bear grudges. He’s goofy, he’s happy, he’s peaceful. He drinks cocoa with his last joint of the night. And he gets pegged, that’s confirmed, too. I need more old, happy Jay. Also, back to the bright colours! (10/10)

No trouble at all. Not quite sure how to properly express this, but I myself am a demiromantic person, so I never consider gender nor appearance when writing my characters and their preferences. I also used to mostly write female readers since this is what I relate to, until it occurred to me that outside of the used pronouns, nothing was overly feminine. As it turns out, switching to gender neutral/masculine readers isn't really an active effort on my part.

To give you a concrete example, the reader I had in mind for this story is not displaying any traditionally feminine traits. It's the reason why they blend in so well. They're strong, skilled, and have a nonchalant way of interacting with the other men, which is why Mr. Captain is so conflicted about it. The suggestion you made is entirely doable as a potential ending without changing anything at all.

Basically, I am entirely comfortable varying my readers from coquette damsels in distress to manly men breaking walls with their pinky fingers. My characters will love you regardless. :D

alright, alright, fine, i'll admit! I remember not liking Garroth the first go around. I don't remember WHY. I was also a cat 5 hater back then, and I REALLY REALLY fucking liked Aaron (the guy gave me gender envy AND made me realize I was capable of liking guys. I had a really specific type) so maybe I literally just didn't like him bc I wanted aphmau and aaron to kiss. I also was sort of not a huge fan of het romances at all anyways, usually bc I subconciously wanted to date the woman involved, and I wouldn't be too shocked if child me, who everybody thought would be a raging butch lesbian when I grew up, had a massive crush on the cool pretty protagonist with the cool goddess lore and the angel wings. I turned out to be a deeply bisexual man who would do anything for his wife, so take that as you will, I don't know.

But as an ADULT watching this show, I'll fucking tell you what, Garroth so far is an excellently written fantasy man and it is so easy to imagine characters falling for him! By episode 22, when he's finally able to walk a bit after Zenix shoots him, and he sees Aphmau with the baby. The way he's so concerned for the baby's health after learning it was abandoned. The way he immediately signs up to coparent him with Aph. "...You know, he's kind of cute. He reminds me of someone." I can just imagine him having offered a finger to Levin, and Levin grabs his finger and just smiles one of those big round baby smiles, and then he says that and him and Aphmau share a smile for the first time since Garroth got hurt... a small moment of hope after so much terrible shit... especially knowing that here's Garroth at a VERY low point, a protector forced to rest in bed, having missed so much action, having been betrayed by his trusted apprentice, WHO WAS LIKE A SON TO HIM. And he is ready. He is THERE for Levin. He's ready to try to find the kid's parents if they're out there.

I think that right there is something that can just really sell you on the good of a character. And also he's so dad. Somebody PLEASE give him a child to parent that he won't have to give up or anything.

For the past two years, I've been introducing a friend to Wizard School Mysteries by live reading the first two books over Discord, and she's loved everything about them so far (especially certain characters; I can confirm that Fafgander, Dhenregirr, Demonbone and Professor Spidergrin officially have the monsterfucker seal of approval). However, one line from Book 2 stuck out during one of these readings that made me wonder whether the impression we got was due to my own delivery or intentional on your part.

I reading the Needlessly Gendered Night Out chapter, and I ended up delivering Polybeus asking James to be his wingman as if it were a marriage proposal. On one hand, I just thought it was the funniest way to read that line at the time (which my friend's reaction confirmed), but on the other, it ties in so well with Margot's suspicions of Polybeus having a crush on James back in the first book that I can't help but wonder if that was the connotation you had in mind in the first place...

Well, firstly, thank you for that! I can't overstate how much I appreciate it when people spread the word about my books, and the idea of someone doing a dramatic reading of them in particular just makes the novelist AND theater kid in me very happy.

I've definitely written Polybeus and James's interactions to be very flirty, particularly on Polybeus's end. Polybeus is the Rival archetype, after all, and if your Leader of the Group and the Rival don't have some shipping sparks going on, you're probably not writing them right. So even as the nature of that rivalry evolves into something more friendly/healthy in book 2, it remains very flirty because Polybeus is, on some level, kind of obsessed with James.

Now, at the moment the exact nature of that relationship is intentionally vague. Perhaps not from James's end - we kinda know where he's leaning romantically by this point, right? - but for Polybeus it, like many things in his life, is in flux. A huge part of Polybeus's arc, especially in book 2, is figuring out exactly who he is and what he really wants.

Polybeus comes from Mediterra, specifically the part of Mediterra that's based on the Greek version of Greco-Roman mythology rather than the Roman version, which means homosexuality/bisexuality is pretty normalized where he comes from. His favorite hero, Achilles, is explicitly a gay man in Midgaheim canon. So Polybeus isn't unaware of homosexual attraction, nor does he have any reason to think he can't feel it. So him not knowing exactly why he's obsessed with James isn't a sort of "guy who's been raised to think he's straight doesn't realize he's gay" situation. He's been raised in a culture where people are kinda assumed to be bisexual by default.

But he's also raised in a culture with a strong emphasis on platonic homosocial relationships as well - warrior bonds and the like. Your closest buddy on the battlefield is just as important a relationship to a Mediterran like Polybeus as your romantic partner - and yeah, for some people those two are one and the same, but for others they aren't.

And then there's also just the fact that James is, in many ways, exactly who Polybeus wishes he was. James is clever like Odysseus, marked for greatness by a higher power, and capable of attracting friends and followers with what appears to be relative ease. He's confident (or so Polybeus assumes) and strong and brave, all traits Polybeus fully believes he himself lacks.

So what is the source of the obsession? Romantic desire? A warrior's bond? Envy? Polybeus himself doesn't know, just as he doesn't know what most of his other desires are or why he has them. But it's something for him to unravel as our story goes along.

And you know, we also have to take into account the fact that James isn't the only person Polybeus flirts with. He's infatuated with Gretchen too, even if he expresses it clumsily, and he's got a strange friendship budding with Charlotte, not to mention the somewhat Helga Patacki-ish treatment he gives Ivan. Polybeus contains multitudes, really.

also i've been through some REAL SHIT over the last two years. my mental health is absolutely not the same. i am not the same person any of you have known. I knew moving in with MIL to the shitass state of North Carolina would be difficult, we had the chance to escape right at the end, but like Orpheus, I looked back at Eurydice and now i have been trapped in Southern Passive Aggressive hell.

on the bright side, my mil is insane and makes herself suffer too. on the unbright side, no matter how small i make myself, she's getting worse (and more scared of me???? i do not understand). she's started up with "praying all night that you'll start going to church and never drink alcohol again" type bullshit

my car got totaled at the end of November and my dear brother bought me Baldur's Gate 3 as a get well soon present. I cannot fully express how much this game has saved me - this stupid obsession over a gd vampire elf is honestly one of the few reasons i wake up in the morning. playing the game and keeping the stabbing urges to virtual people, writing dumb little scenes because I can hear Astarion snark stupid shit or picture him dealing with some ridiculous scenario or another - sounds unhinged, but it's been keeping me going.

i'm not really allowed to exist in the house i'm alive in (saying i'm "living" here makes it sound like i have free, unadulterated access to things like "cooking utensils", "work/craft spaces", "a flushing toilet and running water", "using the tv for gaming instead of watching tv", "using any of living spaces to live, instead of empty space to look at", "my cats"). i'm not quite at the end of my rope yet, but gods DAMN, in a way i feel feral. done with this. done with the next person who wants to control and micromanage me. numb. i want to bite someone.

i had a biopsy the other week with zero pain management (no ibprophen or anything). i didn't flinch because i just didn't care about the pain. i'm so shut down from stress that hunger pains mean nothing to me. it's just a sensation that happens sometimes. being reached into and having pieces literally plucked out of my body? eh, that's a thing that happened. get into a car wreck with huge Crayola marker purple bruises? i walked away with little problem.

Aster rarely trusts men outright and is quicker to mistrust them, but she'll put aside misgivings about anyone who she thinks she can use to get what she wants.

Rocky trusts people far too easily. She doesn't stay mistrustful for long, and is very generous with second chances. She forgave Benny for shooting her in the head when she freed him at the Fort.

Sasha is very trusting, but as soon as someone gives him a reason not to trust them, he will cut them out and keep it that way. After becoming a ghoul, he's found that he has more reasons more often not to trust people. 14) What animal do they fear the most?

Arson's worst fear are dogs. He's seen enough of the Legion's attack dogs to last a lifetime. It doesn't matter how friendly a dog seems, he's seen people killed by dog bites, and will get as far away as possible.

Aster is terrified of rats and geckoes. They're enough to make her run away screaming.

Rocky likes most animals, but she's developed a healthy fear of cazadores.

Sasha has discovered that he's not a huge fan of deathclaws. He can't really get behind the whole mauling-his-friends-to-pieces thing.

15) How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?

Arson is selectively mute, and will rehearse what he plans to say for a very long time before speaking to someone, aside from his closest friends. He'd most talkative when he's able to talk about something he knows a lot about.

Aster is very impulsive with what she says, and is often the sort of person who speaks just to hear the sound of her own voice.

Rocky tends to blurt (she's a kid, she has very poor impulse control) and she doesn't always think before she speaks. Though it is apparent from her speech that she is uneducated, she is always very polite.

Sasha is an on-the-spot type of guy. He often just starts saying something and goes with it, for better or for worse.

23) How does envy manifest itself in them?

Arson gets mean and combative when he's jealous. It's an emotion he struggles to identify in himself, so he often finds himself angry and lashing out when he doesn't mean to.

Aster is the queen of jealousy. When she wants something, she will stop at no ends to have it.

Rocky gets cold with people when she's jealous. She's usually very sweet and talkative, but she'll grow quiet and distant from someone she's jealous of.

Sasha isn't much of a jealous person, and when he does get jealous, he tends to brush it off quickly. The only time he's ever really gotten jealous was when he convinced himself that Ian had feelings for Katja, and the jealousy went away as soon as he found out Ian was distant and awkward around him because of how bad of a crush he had on him.

F) What do you feel when you think of your OC?

Arson is really personal and somewhat nostalgic for me. He's really fucking important to me, even if I know he's kind of mary-sue-y and if I keep messing with his backstory because I created him when I was like 17. He's kind of an ideal version of myself, and I'm so excited to bring him to life for the fnv meetup :)

Aster is honestly my least favorite OC. She's a fascinating character, but playing fnv as her or writing about her just feel kind of icky. She's an embodiment of greed and envy and impulsivity, and at the end of it all she's just tragic and miserable.

Rocky makes me so proud. She's built off this archetype of the gender-bending girl hero (think Pippi Longstocking, Calpurnia Tate) who was so instrumental to my childhood. She's adventurous, she's generous, she cares about her friends and wants to do what's right. She's kind of an adult perspective on that younger hero, my way of looking back at my own childhood self. She symbolizes that pivotal stage when you start becoming your own person, and I hope someday I'll write characters like her that capture kids' imaginations and show them that they can be themselves and be heroes.

Sasha is kind of my favorite OC right now, and I love his intentional absurdity and passion for proving himself. I think he's sort of a manifestation of my anxieties about breaking out into the adult world and trying to stay true to my values and where I come from while also making a difference for the greater good. I think my favorite thing about him is his commitment to being one of those cool old people who has all the best stories.

I didn’t have to do the little blurb but since the point is to get to know me, why not? Here are my blorbos, arranged in no particular order (but psst my favorite is 10)

1. Frisk (undertale, when the game was really popular I dressed up as Frisk for Halloween and was surprised to find my best friend as Chara and two acquaintances as Alphys and Sans. God that was a great Halloween.)

2. Roserade (pokemon, I love the design and the gay flair. Plus queer flower fems are very good. [holding budew, roselia, and roserade in my hand] I just think they’re neat.)

3. Fae (Fire Emblem Heroes, god I love this baby, but she gets 0 recognition bc her og game was a Japan-only release. Yes she’s a thousand year old dragon who looks and acts like a little girl but look I just want to give her a juice box and a plushie)

4. Angus McDonald (the adventure zone balance. God I love my boy!! For a good while my icon was various images of him in the “do it for them” meme format. It’s still my icon on discord bc I LOVE joining a server and having people flip their shit over My Boy. Once someone went “Angus Mcdonald?!” And I went “yes that’s my christian name.”)

5. Natsu (Fairy tail, it was the first anime I really got into. I looooved it and Natsu specially was my first fictional crush that I wrote fanfic for. I watched fairy tail up to the 190s where I kinda… drifted off of it. Years later I rewatched it and can say with a certainty that it is Not As Good, with a lot of problematic bs. But I’ll always have a soft spot for Natsu.)

6: Zelda (breath of the wild. She’s a trans icon. Also I played the game before and after I left the cult, and GOD does her story hit different. “You’ve been trained your whole life to forge your connection with the divine, just as your ancestors did before you. You’re trying and trying and trying, pouring your whole heart into it. And it’s… not working. Everyone’s expectations are crushing you. If they could just let you do what you’re good at, you might be able to thrive! But all your parent can say is try harder.” . . . Of course I love this poor doomed princess.)

7: Ralsei (Deltarune. Yes, blush when Kris is too close!! Hug the combat dummy!! Shield by wrapping yourself up completely in your scarf!! God I love them. Also even though the ch 2 sprite debunks it, my headcanon is that the heart on Ralsei’s dress is actually a chest cutout so it’s black fur, not fabric.)

8. Flayn (fire emblem three houses. She’s adorable and sweet with a cutesy design and soft mannerisms. Not great in combat so I made her my dancer. I desperately wish they had varied the body types on the girl characters so they weren’t all mannequin doll perfect— Flayn deserves better, and give my buff girls muscles, cowards! Honorary mention to Petra from the same game, who I love and is one of the aforementioned girls who deserve huge watermelon-splitting thighs, goddamnit!!)

9. Yoosung (mystic messenger, ik 707 was all the rage but Yoosung was my first route and will always have a special place in my heart.)

10. Garty O’Brien (dimension 20’s fantasy high. I adore every part of them. They’re a nonbinary aasimar half orc who runs a tavern on a moving pirate city made of lashed together ships. They have top scars and cool as hell sacred geometric & floral tattoos. They’re strong and muscular and on top of all that they’re classy & chill beyond belief.)

Least favourite thing about them: I didn't get an introject of him in my system (JOKING) The fact that I will never look just like him (ALSO JOKING) The fact that he made me question whether or not I could call myself a lesbian because I felt attracted to him (HALF JOKING) seriously it's probably the way he gets such tunnel vision. General Opinion over said Character: I really really like Kimblee! In my mind I tend to think of BH!Kimblee and 03!Kimblee as two different characters, so I’m giving my opinion on both. BH!Kimblee is such a good character, presenting a wonderful philosophical foil to our protagonists, he knows what he’s doing is by all sensible definitions awful, but he doesn’t care. Him also pointing out that although the other soldiers are pained by what theyre doing, theyre still doing it. 

03!Kimblee doesn’t have the same depth as BH!Kimblee but honestly I dont think he needed to, I enjoy how instead of being maniacal and calculating he’s just balls to the wall insane. Kimblee in 03 is violence and destruction for the hell of it, because he can and he does. He’s unhinged and violent and it’s great.

do you think part of jane's "deal" with jake was that she had gender envy towards him and confused that with a crush?

I feel like that's stretching it a little bit, to be honest. I also don't buy that explanation with the roxy/dirk scenario, it puts a huge broadstroke on a complex situation to neatly call it a day.

The crux of the janejake fail dynamic to me is that Jake fails to perform the masculinity she so desperately needs to fill a role in her glamorous pre-planned lifetime sitcom, while Jane, whatever it is you want to say about her, aims to always exceed expectations— including being the perfect tradcath girlboss, no matter how much of a pain in the ass it is. Jane seems to resent Jake for his inability to stick to her script, and i think it's because she knows had she been on HIS place, she'd have no problem doing it at all. (You could read this as gender envy related, somewhat? But it doesn't feel quite right. It's more of gender wrath. "You're doing it wrong! It's so easy! Why can't you just do it right!")

Jake's role-defiance isn't secluded to Jane though, that's just a thing he does. You could probably argue its the reason why most of our character-narrators (or adjacent) seem to dislike him so much. He builds a character, realizes he doesn't like it, attempts to ditch it, and improvs regardless of how many scripts you slide over to him. The concept you have of "Jake" may be one of interest to him, but he's not gonna put in all that work if he's not feeling it.
