On The Fence
I remember back to the old days when motion sensor lights were all the rage in home security. If anyone walked into the sensor’s “line of sight,” the spotlights would go on. Hopefully, break-ins and theft would go down.
Today, that’s all pretty laughably simple stuff. Home security systems are a dime a dozen now, and anyone can install them, allowing us to monitor things from afar via our phones.

But imagine a world in which our phones also interact not just with the things we have installed at home, but perhaps technology installed by companies. Imagine a world in which if you cross a virtual barrier, and it triggers marketing offers. And imagine a world in which the marketer recognizes you coming, and starts prepping your order before you actually arrive.

The latter is what McDonald’s is launching. The tech involved is geo-fencing, which allows a company to establish arbitrary (and sometimes downright aggressive) virtual barriers circumferentially around any location. It could be your own location. Or aggressively, as in the case of Burger King, when they established their Whopper Detour around competing restaurants, and then tried to lure people away.
Tumblr media
McDonald’s sees geo-fencing as a way to speed up service. As a marketer, I see geo-fencing as fertile ground for drumming up sales, and if the provider can do it faster, that’s even better. In fact, while a number of QSR (Quick-Service Restaurants) have already launched geo-fencing efforts, I think it is an area that has thus far been under-utilized.
Think about it. Through the use of AI, your Google Maps or Waze figures out that you frequently enter the same query: “Craft breweries near me.” Wouldn’t it be nice if Google Maps simply announced such information whenever you happen to be near one? You know, without my having to enter it one more time? Heck, Google could even sell premier ad space so that individual breweries are announced first and more often.
The same could hold for virtually any type of business you frequent. You wouldn’t even have to enter a query, because, as we all know, Google is tracking our every movement. It knows you frequently go to TJ Maxx , for example. So why not let us know one is nearby?
What I am describing is not so much geo-fencing, but rather location-based marketing, but there is a huge overlap in this Venn Diagram. It can all become rather blurry, but the hoped-for result is still the same: increase sales.
So let’s run with this. Taco Bell should be hitting us up with ads when we’re entering its trade zone. Gas Buddy, the popular crowd-sourced gas price app, should know when we last stopped for fuel, and then starts spouting off prices as we hit the 300-mile mark on a tank. Hotels could do likewise. I am pretty sure that Google knows I prefer Hilton properties, so it may as well hit me with their best shot.
Naturally, some may feel this is an invasion of privacy. I hate to say this one more time, but that veil was pierced long ago. I do agree, though, that screen-based and verbal information such as this should be opt-in. It could be distracting at minimum while driving, and at worst, plain annoying. Somewhere in the middle are “informative” and “attention-worthy.”
As for McDonald’s, good on them for being tech-forward, even if geo-fencing capabilities have actually been around for quite a few years now. For regular customers, this could be a godsend, if only because the company can provide ever better service. It might even do a little more up-selling along the way. And if they’re really smart, they will notice you rolling along nearby even if you hadn’t just placed an order. It’s always time for a snack, right?
Now if I could just get WT to deploy something like this so that the staff would know when I am about to arrive. I like my coffee with a tablespoon of almond milk, please. And make sure that coffee is hot. Turn on my computer so I can login as soon as I step in the office. A couple of new dry erase markers would be nice as well so I am ready to go to my class.

Oh well. It’s one thing to dream. And it is quite another when you could just call me an April Fool a day late. At least they’ll know I am there. They can sense that motion.

Indoor Positioning and Navigation Market Trends:
Google is developing an indoor location positioning technology based on its Tango Augmented Reality (AR) system. This new technology is called Visual Positioning Service (VPS). It will allow a mobile device to swiftly and accurately understand its position indoors. Using visual clues from distinct features in the room, a Tango-enabled phone would be able to recognize where it is in space by comparing new points captured by its camera with previously observed ones.
January 24, 2018: Here Technologies, a mapping company valued at around $3 billion has acquired Micello, a company based in California that operates a platform for creating, editing and publishing indoor maps. This acquisition will support HERE’s strategy to provide world-class mapping and advanced location services both indoors and outdoors. In combination with HERE’s unique tracking technologies, indoor maps will enable new and innovative market solutions such as the tracking of parts on a factory floor, the optimization of workspace usage, indoor wayfinding at complex transit interchanges, and last mile guidance in vehicles.
Fantasmo, a notable technology start-up, has camera positioning standard (CPS) which captures spatial data through your device’s camera. With this data stored in a server, AR apps can readily and accurately determine position and location relative to recognized landmarks in the immediate vicinity. Fantasmo’s approach also mirrors another startup, 6D.ai, whose platform can capture a dense 3D mesh with smartphone cameras while running in the background.
Sydney airport introduces Apple Maps. Getting around Sydney Airport just got easier due to the gateway’s adoption of Apple Maps (web mapping service), which shows users how to navigate their way through T1 International, T2/T3 Domestic terminals and its car parks. Customers can now easily find facilities and services inside the terminal, including restrooms, parent’s rooms, elevators and shops, and see current location with indoor positioning.
Infsoft 360° Antennas’ Angle of Arrival technology has spurred a new way about how to calculate location. These receiver antennas detect the radio signals emitted by any mobile 2.4 GHz transmitter (e.g. beacon) that is in range. Based on the angle and distance determined, it is possible to calculate the position of an object equipped with such transmitter with an accuracy of 1 to 3 meters. This makes server-based BLE solutions a favorable alternative to cost intensive Ultra-wideband (UWB) applications as long as no centimeter accuracy is required. In comparison to using UWB, a beacon based tracking system utilizing AoA technology can be set up at much lesser costs and also has an advantage of a longer battery lifetime. Practical applications of this technology can include tracking systems in logistics, for example, which can make a decisive contribution to maximizing warehouse operations.

One of my more accomplished friends is an MRI operator. When we first got talking about what we did for a living, I didn't get very interested. Now, don't think I'm some kind of elitist snob. My career (freelance journalist/greasy dirtbag) is a laugh-a-minute thrill ride, where you're as likely to get hunted down by friends of corrupt small government as you are to throw up in the back of a diesel-swapped Geo Metro being used to chase cows back into the paddock. It's set the bar very, very high.
By comparison, MRIs are boring healthcare stuff, meant for taking extremely high-quality pictures of people's junk all day long. Those pictures are then viewed by doctors, who will sneer at those people for not eating enough cauliflower. Just an absolute snore, which although involving a cool machine that's very loud, didn't fascinate me in the least.
That is, until they mentioned The Quench. In case you're unfamiliar, MRI machines operate on the principles of magnetism (that's the "M.") Big-ass magnets are used to send pulses throughout the machine, and those pulses are inconveniently blocked by chunks of your body standing in the way. By recording how irritated those magnets are, we can figure out what's going on inside your shit. Of course, you need big, big magnets for this, you're not running down to the grocery store and diagnosing a brain misfire using that cute little toddler-art-retainer shaped like a frog.
Sometimes, when shit really goes wrong, you need to stop the magnetism in a hurry. Maybe a patient walked in with a fully loaded firearm, and the magnets are now using it to shoot the inside of the machine. Perhaps you just decided that you would like to end your career. Either way, hitting the "quench" button douses those magnets with several hundred thousand dollars' worth of liquid helium, which makes them stop doing magnet-y things and start racking up billable hours for the MRI maintenance guy. This kind of highly expensive mechanical failure is my jam, and I asked immediately where I could get me some of those quenched-up magnets. Surely, they wouldn't reuse anything they've beaten up in this way?
My so-called friend figured out what I was up to, and clammed up almost immediately. Almost. He gave me just enough information for my inquisitive journalistic mind to figure out that they just chuck these big-ass magnets into the dumpster out back of the hospital, and someone with an enterprising enough mindset could then un-chuck them into the back of, say, a U-Haul van with the license plate removed after being careful to avoid all the security cameras along the way. Not that I would do such a thing, especially because it involves driving through a particularly weak chain-link fence near the seniors' centre.
Coincidentally, are you coming to my unveiling of my new magnetic-levitation Volare-launching system this weekend? I promise to listen very intently to whatever bullshit you say about your boring job, you'll love it. The Mayor is gonna be there, cut the ribbon and everything. Shit. Siri, remind me to get plastic scissors for The Mayor.

Hey! Hope you're having an awesome day/night!
I wanted to ask, that is, if your ask box is open, and if you wish to; could you list your headcanons/ideas of what Geo would be like as a romantic partner? Like love languages, how you get with him, etc. (or more if you want idc I just want Geo content...and how Sol and Crowe would deal with it teehee).
Thanks in advance Anon! Wishing you good health and a marvellous week! :]
Geo hcs~!
Not edited/proofread.
No warnings?? Just pure fluff, and sorry I didn’t include smut :)
Thank you so much for the request! :D And thank you 🥺 have a good week as well~!
I’m still on the fence if requests are closed or not, since I get writers block easily, but I’ll try my best if you do request :)
With that, enjoy!!
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I feel like it would take a while before Geo even acknowledges that he might like you.
He’d be denying that you’re even friends for the longest time and then it just hits up like a bus. If he’s doing something like his archery class when it hits him, he just pauses and stares off into the distance. His eyes widen ever so slight, you wouldn’t really notice unless you were right up in his face.
I’m sorry you have to confess 😭 His reaction depends on how you confess/ask him out.
If you are in a public space- He’s eyes would go wide most likely and glance around at everyone anxiously. If he sees people noticing you two, he’ll probably reject you💀😭
If you accept and apologize, he’d find you later in the hall and ask to talk to you in private. He’d explain why he rejected you, which he was overwhelmed and would’ve much rather preferred a clear and empty space.
He’d say you can restart with his face not as harsh looking. He’s essentially saying to ask again in a much better space.
Of course, you ask again and then he actually gives the answer he would’ve liked to say before.
If you do it in a quieter, more private setting- He’s slightly suspicious on why you’re asking to talk to him in private.
He’s very pleased that you’ve asked him without the staring eyes of others once he hears your confession.
He just..stares at you for a few moments before nodding slowly.
Either way, congratulations! 🎉🎊🍾 You’ve got him!!
The relationship will go slow for sure. He’s very cautious when showing his affections and doesn’t want to overstep any boundaries you may have.
Which is why he’ll want to put it all on the table: both of your guy’s boundaries, wants, etc.
He’d lock pinkies with you when you walk 🥺
I don’t think he’s much for cuddling. At first ;)
If he’s not feeling up for full on cuddles, he’ll just hold your hand or lay an arm over you while still keeping some space.
I feel like once he’s in the mood to cuddle, he’s on top of you with a death grip. He will definitely not let you go.
He’s big on Acts of Service. If he sees your apartment slightly messy, like unclean dishes, he’ll do them for you.
He probably won’t do much else like organizing because he understands everyone has a system and doesn’t want you to get upset. So dishes, dusting, and sweeping/vacuuming/mopping is what he’ll do :)
I feel like he would love to do dishes with you too. Put on some music in the background and have deep conversations and he’s night is great.
How will Crowe react???
He’s shocked for one.
Like?? When did this happen? How? Why?
He’s not going to be a jerk about, and he’s happy for you. He can see that Geo is treating you well and you seem so happy, how could he not be happy for you?
He’s slightly jealous though, but he gets over it :)
How will Sol react???
He’s so mad. He’s immediately plotting Geo’s death I’m sorry 😭
He can see how happy you are, but he only wants him to make you happy. No one else.
If you two are doing your project and Geo comes to pick you up? Sol glares at him and doesn’t even attempt to be polite. He definitely digs his nails into his hand, and the same thing happens just like in Episode Two
His eyes soften when you tell him goodbye, but the second you interlock yours and Geo’s pinkies, he’s glaring at him and sticks his tongue out.
I suggest making sure he isn’t following you and lock your doors and windows :)
~~~~~~~
I’m sorry this took so long 😭 I’m also sorry this is all I got :,)

Radical feminism is a left wing ideology incompatible with all forms of colonialism and imperialism, including Zionism. If you’re going to quit pretending to be a fence sitter and go full mask off by reblogging straight up Zionist apologia, do the rest of us actual radicals a favour and stop associating yourself with the radfem label, thanks
Bestie, radical feminism is an academic framework for analysis developed by mostly American and other western scholars. Radical feminism in non western nations may be similar but it isn’t identical. The radical feminism on tumblr is definitely of the western variety and consequently has zero to say about a geo political conflict between two peoples in the Middle East; except to observe that when war comes, it is women that receive the worst of it.
All I’ve done is call out anti semitism and blatant misinformation. I’ve never defended the actions of the Israeli government or IDF. I’ve never called the suffering of Palestinians fake or exaggerated.
The people of Palestine are not aided by you uncritically reblogging everything you hear that supports your worldview. You are not immune to propaganda because you “picked the right side”.
Also this idea that every belief we have must come packaged together with 1000 other beliefs is so fucking AMERICAN.
There are only two sides according to the American imagination so if I espouse one belief labeled leftism I most agree with every “leftist” position. So when leftists turn on Jews I have to forsake my family and friends and community or else I can’t be a feminist.
You haven’t unlearned the TRA thinking that leftism is a unified hive mind where we’ve all agreed on the “right” thing to think.
Also fascinating that you care about Palestine, just not enough to attach your URL to your message.
