Hey! This is very random, but I saw that you work in cyber security right now. I work in data science, but I'm really interested in cyber security and considering making a switch. I was wondering what kind of cybersecurity work you do, and what has been the most helpful for you to learn what you need for your job!
Hi! Cybersecurity is a really broad field, and you can do a lot of different things depending on what your interests are.
My work is mostly focused around automating things for security, since my background is in programming. Automation is really helpful for speeding up boring, monotonous tasks that need to get done, but don't necessarily need a human involved. A good example is automated phishing analysis, since phishing reports are a big chunk of the cases that security analysts have to deal with, and an analyst usually follows the same few steps at the beginning. Rather than someone having to manually check the reputation of the sender domain, check the reputation of any links, and all of that every single time, we can build tools to automatically scan for things like that and then present the info to the analyst. The whole idea here is to automate the boring data retrieval stuff, since computers are good at that, and give the analyst more time for decision-making and analysis, since humans are good at that.
If you're coming from data science, you might be interested in detection engineering. Cybersecurity is essentially a data problem - we have a ton of logs from a ton of different sources (internal logs, threat intelligence feeds, etc.) - how do we sort through that data to highlight things that we want to pay attention to, and how can we correlate events from different sources? If you're into software development or want to stay more on the data science side, maybe you could also look into roles for software development at companies that have SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) products - these are essentially the big log repositories that organizations rely on for correlation and alerting.
As for starting to learn security, my general go-to recommendation is to start looking through the material for the Security+ certification. For better or worse, certifications are pretty big in security, much more so than other tech fields (to my knowledge). I'm a bit more hesitant to recommend the Security+ now, since CompTIA (the company that offers it) was bought by a private equity company last year. Everyone is kind of expecting the prices to go up and the quality to go down. (The Security+ exam costs $404 USD as of writing this, and I think I took mine for like $135ish with a student discount in 2022). However, the Security+ is still the most well-known and comprehensive entry-level certification that I'm aware of. You can (and should) study for it completely for free - check out Professor Messer's training videos on YouTube. There are also plenty of books out there if that's more of your thing. I'd say to treat the Security+ as a way to get a broad overview of security and figure out what you don't know. (It's certainly not a magic ticket to a job, no matter what those expensive bootcamps will tell you.)
If you aren't familiar with networking, it's worth checking out Professor Messer's Network+ training videos as well. You don't need to know everything on there, but having an understanding of ports, protocols, and network components and design is super useful. I hear a lot that the best security folks are often the ones who come from IT or networking or similar and have a really solid understanding of the fundamentals and then get into security. Don't neglect the basics!
One thing that I'll also add, based on conversations I've had with folks in my network
getting a job in cybersecurity is harder now than it used to be, at least in the US (where I am). There are a ton of very well-qualified people who have been laid off who are now competing with people trying to get into the field in the first place, and with the wrecking ball that Elon is taking to the federal government (and by extension, government contractors) right now
it's hard. There's still a need for skilled folks in cyber, but you're going to run into a lot of those "5 years of experience required for this entry-level job" kind of job postings.
On a slightly happier note, another thing you should do if you want to get into cyber is to stay up to date with what's happening in the industry! I have a masterpost that has a section with some of my favorite news sources. The SANS Stormcast is a good place to start - it's a 5 minute podcast every weekday morning that covers most of the big things. Black Hills Infosec also does a weekly news livestream on YouTube that's similar (but longer and with more banter). Also, a lot of infosec folks hang out on Mastodon & in the wider fediverse. Let me know if you want some recs for folks to follow over there.
The nice thing about cybersecurity (and computer-related fields in general, I find) is that there are a ton of free resources out there to help you learn. Sometimes it's harder to find the higher-quality ones, but let me know if there are any topics you're interested in & I'll see what I can find. I have a few posts in my cybersecurity tag on here that might help.
Thank you for your patience, I know you sent this in over a week ago lol but life has been busy. Feel free to send any follow-up questions if you have any!

The Role of CCNP in Multi-Cloud Networking
We live in a time where everything is connected—our phones, laptops, TVs, watches, even our refrigerators. But have you ever wondered how all this connection actually works? Behind the scenes, there are large computer networks that make this possible. Now, take it one step further and imagine companies using not just one but many cloud services—like Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure—all at the same time. This is called multi-cloud networking. And to manage this kind of advanced setup, skilled professionals are needed. That’s where CCNP comes in.
Let’s break this down in a very simple way so that even a school student can understand it.
What Is Multi-Cloud Networking?
Imagine you’re at a school event. You have food coming from one stall, water from another, and sweets from a third. Now, imagine someone needs to manage everything—make sure food is hot, water is cool, and sweets arrive on time. That manager is like a multi-cloud network engineer. Instead of food stalls, though, they're managing cloud services.
So, multi-cloud networking means using different cloud platforms to store data, run apps, or provide services—and making sure all these platforms work together without any confusion or delay.
So, Where Does CCNP Fit In?
CCNP, which stands for Cisco Certified Network Professional, teaches you how to build, manage, and protect networks at a professional level. If CCNA is the beginner level, CCNP is the next big step.
When we say someone has completed CCNP training, it means they’ve learned advanced networking skills—skills that are super important for multi-cloud setups. Whether it’s connecting a company’s private network to cloud services or making sure all their apps work smoothly between AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, a CCNP-certified person can do it.
Why Is CCNP Important for Multi-Cloud?
Here are a few simple reasons why CCNP plays a big role in this new world of multi-cloud networking:
Connecting Different Platforms: Each cloud service is like a different language. CCNP helps you understand how to make them talk to each other.
Security and Safety: In multi-cloud networks, data moves in many directions. CCNP-certified professionals learn how to keep that data safe.
Speed and Performance: If apps run slowly, users get frustrated. CCNP training teaches you how to make networks fast and efficient.
Troubleshooting Problems: When something breaks in a multi-cloud system, it can be tricky to fix. With CCNP skills, you’ll know how to find the issue and solve it quickly.
What You Learn in CCNP That Helps in Multi-Cloud
Let’s look at some topics covered in CCNP certification that directly help with multi-cloud work:
Routing and Switching: This means directing traffic between different networks smoothly, which is needed in a multi-cloud setup.
Network Automation: You learn how to make systems work automatically, which is super helpful when managing multiple clouds.
Security: You’re trained to spot and stop threats, even if they come from different cloud platforms.
Virtual Networking: Since cloud networks are often virtual (not physical wires and cables), CCNP teaches you how to work with them too.
Can I Learn CCNP Online?
Yes, you can! Thanks to digital learning, you can take a CCNP online class from anywhere—even your home. You don’t need to travel or sit in a classroom. Just a good internet connection and the will to learn is enough.
An online class is perfect for students or working professionals who want to upgrade their skills in their free time. It also helps you learn at your own speed. You can pause, repeat, or review topics anytime.
What Happens After You Get Certified?
Once you finish your CCNP certification, you’ll find many doors open for you. Especially in companies that use multiple cloud platforms, your skills will be in high demand. You could work in roles like:
Cloud Network Engineer
Network Security Analyst
IT Infrastructure Manager
Data Center Specialist
And the best part? These roles come with good pay and long-term career growth.
Where Can I Learn CCNP?
You can take CCNP training from many places, but it's important to choose a center that gives you hands-on practice and teaches in simple language. One such place is Network Rhinos, which is known for making difficult topics easy to understand. Whether you’re learning online or in-person, the focus should always be on real-world skills, not just theory.
Final Thoughts
The world is moving fast toward cloud-based technology, and multi-cloud setups are becoming the new normal. But with more clouds come more challenges. That’s why companies are looking for smart, trained professionals who can handle the job.
CCNP training prepares you for exactly that. Whether you're just starting your career or want to move to the next level, CCNP gives you the skills to stay relevant and in demand.
With options like a CCNP online class, you don’t even have to leave your house to become an expert. And once you complete your CCNP certification, you're not just learning about networks—you’re becoming someone who can shape the future of cloud technology.
So yes, if you’re thinking about CCNP in a world that’s quickly moving to the cloud, the answer is simple: go for it.

Under the cut for some work complaining lmao
Its year end review time and one of my coworkers is much more technically proficient and senior to me and everyone else in the unit but she has this thing where its clear she doesnt see herself in our role on our team (used to work in IT). She's so nice and friendly and thoughtful and amazing in so many different ways but she has that thing that moderately technical people have when surrounded by less proficient people where she knows she can just do things faster her way and sees no problem with just "fixing things" as she calls it.
Except we move a little more deliberately because requirements for our process-oriented job are constantly changing and require a level of change management that is basically handholding - she ends up giving herself more work and keeps coming up with "fixes" and "solutions" that re-invent our data structures 5 times instead of just letting other members of the team take lead on their projects and seeing where they can be helped first.
Anyway right before she got here i qualified for a senior role and started taking on some of the technical stuff, but im by no means a talent and i really really don't have an interest beyond SQL and Python to get me exactly as far as i need to satisfy job requirements. The rest of the job that im actually interested in is more to do with influencing large group behaviors in my agency and implementing certain congressional policy requirements.
Its very very clear to me that she doesnt take me seriously in my role and that she thinks im just another person to be "managed" up the chain, and meanwhile i've been very careful about how i deploy technical solutions so that everyone else will be able to troubleshoot, develop, and build the same things im building w the same results.
Anyway so today we were chatting about our wrap ups and i was like hmm i wish i had more to show for this year and she was like aww you provided some great emotional support!
Like. Ouch. Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean i guess this is a sign to get serious abt data analyst certifications so i can do stuff in R i GUESS but like. Man i wish that she was a little more thoughtful about the other aspects of the job and not so painfully reactive that our SOPs are in constant shambles bc of her capriciousness and desire to Be The Solution Haver

Is it possible to transition to a data scientist from a non-tech background at the age of 28?
Hi,
You can certainly shift to become a data scientist from a nontechnical background at 28. As a matter of fact, very many do. Most data scientists have actually shifted to this field from different academic and professional backgrounds, with some of them having changed careers even in their midlife years.
Tumblr media
Build a Strong Foundation:
Devour some of the core knowledge about statistics, programming, and data analysis. Online classes, bootcamps—those are good and many, many convenient resources. Give it a whirl with Coursera and Lejhro for specific courses related to data science, machine learning and programming languages like Python and R.
A data scientist needs to be proficient in at least one or two programming languages. Python is the most used language for data science, for it is simple, and it has many libraries. R is another language that might come in handy for a data scientist, mostly in cases connected with statistical analysis. The study of manipulation libraries for study data and visualization tools includes Pandas for Python and Matplotlib and Seaborn for data, respectively.
Develop Analytical Skills:
The field of data science includes much analytics and statistics. Probability, hypothesis testing, regression analysis would be essential. These skills will help you derive meaningful information out of the data and also allow you to use statistical methods for real-world problems.
Practical experience is very important in the field of data science. In order to gain experience, one might work on personal projects or contribute to open-source projects in the same field. For instance, data analysis on publicly available datasets, machine learning, and creating models to solve particular problems, all these steps help to make the field more aware of skills with one's profile.
Though formal education in data science is by no means a requirement, earning a degree or certification in the discipline you are considering gives you great credibility. Many reputed universities and institutions offer courses on data science, machine learning, and analytics.
Connect with professionals in the same field: try to be part of communities around data science and attend events as well. You would be able to find these opportunities through networking and mentoring on platforms like LinkedIn, Kaggle, and local meetups. This will keep you abreast of the latest developments in this exciting area of research and help you land job opportunities while getting support.
Look out for entry-level job opportunities or internships in the field of data science; this, in effect, would be a great way to exercise your acquired experience so far. Such positions will easily expose one to a real-world problem related to data and allow seizing the occasion to develop practical skills. These might be entry-level positions, such as data analysts or junior data scientists, to begin with.
Stay Current with Industry Trends: Data science keeps on evolving with new techniques, tools, and technologies. Keep up to date with the latest trends and developments in the industry by reading blogs and research papers online and through courses.
Conclusion:
It is definitely possible to move into a data scientist role if one belongs to a non-tech profile and is eyeing this target at the age of 28. Proper approach in building the base of strong, relevant skills, gaining practical experience, and networking with industry professionals helps a lot in being successful in the transition. This is because data science as a field is more about skills and the ability to solve problems, which opens its doors to people from different backgrounds.

Providing excellent customer service may be easy, but if not done correctly, it is manageable. Handling consumer requests, complaints, and comments across multiple channels and platforms can take a lot of work. It's frequently essential to handle delicate or complicated circumstances that demand tact and sensitivity.
ChatGPT provides witty and approachable customer service solutions. It makes it possible to develop chatbots that can effectively handle customer requests, complaints, and comments via various platforms and channels. Customers can receive customized information, advice, recommendations, or solutions from these chatbots according to their needs and preferences. Additionally, ChatGPT improves customer relations by producing replies that correspond with users' messages or emotions. It also guarantees that accuracy, clarity, tone, and politeness are maintained. Creating scripts or templates for various scenarios or situations and providing advice and best practices for efficient communication make customer service discussions more seamless.
ChatGPT enables companies to obtain insightful data by creating surveys or reviews based on their customers' experiences or input. Creating incentives or awards based on loyalty or general contentment even helps promote customer involvement and satisfaction.
6. Simplify the Management of Projects
Any firm must successfully plan, carry out, oversee, manage, and close down projects, emphasizing project management's significance. Competitive Play is a Mythos
Part of design is understanding a game's purpose. Who, what, where, why, when, how-
-and, most often, 'the fuck?'
Competitive modes tend to have a lot of those questions answered from the moment it is decided there's going to be one. Rules, laws, guidelines, are all set in place to make the mode as fair and just as possible so that player frustration is kept to a minimum.
That doesn't mean you won't get frustrated, mind you, just that the playing field is even enough that it should be easier to determine when a player is better than you.
(note the emphasis in that sentence)
Competitive play is based around level playing fields, encompassing rulesets, and a definitive goal for all players participating. Added/extra variables within the game have to be handled with care, or else the inevitable economics that rule competitive will warp any integrity or consistency you are aiming for:
Of course, I am referring to "Min-maxing".
Every little percentile, every tiny integer; split seconds, shaved seconds, movement efficiencies, 'techs', sightlines, high-ground, focus fire, call outs, short-hand comms, breakpoints-
-there's a list. Broad and wide and many. These are the variables used in a competitive setting, to establish both skill and allowance within the game, pushing beyond the standard (often simple) rules that govern the playing field and into a reservoir of external knowledge the likes of which could fill up a library.
The sort of reservoir that demands coaches of varying tiers, targeted workouts, military-grade/hyper-specialized reflex training, supplements and enhancements, textbooks of raw data, and the analysts to explain it in maximized efficacy.
Competitive play, the higher in the ranks and placements you go, draws increasingly from this reservoir of external knowledge. To the point that, at the highest levels, you might as well be a scholar taking classes only available in particular formats and under certain certifications.
All that to say: High Skill Play has little-to-nothing to do with playing the actual game.
Playing a game, any game really, can go back and forth on the field without this external reservoir of knowledge, but the moment that knowledge begins to get applied, the results are almost immediately noticeable.
A player who knows that High Ground is advantageous, will gain an edge and attempt to secure it more and more often. That edge is magnified, when said player understands why high ground is important.
The same goes for Focus Fire. When players can help coordinate their teammates to concentrate multiple streams of effort against a singular target, regardless of how the game is played, the answering effort can't compete just through sheer numerical comparison.
5 sources of damage focusing on 1 source of health, will always go in favour of the damage.
But learning about these concepts is part of that external reservoir of knowledge that makes up High Skill Play. One has to seek out that information (or, more rarely, stumble on it while playing the game) and, whereas it can often be the case that other players will pass that information on, only those capable of implementing it in their own gameplay will see those benefits.
And if a game, at it's baseline/foundation, does not have any education systems (UI, tutorials, pings, colour-coding, etc.) built into it's core, then much of the external reservoir of knowledge will either be impossible to discover or impossible to implement (probably both).
Which can, in turn, give the competitive side of that game a 'Glass Skill Ceiling'; you can watch High Skill Players achieving results with their gameplay, but attempting to implement it without the knowledge and frameworks those players access regularly (reflexively, even) will breed further frustration.
It might even convince a lot of players that would otherwise enjoy your game, to go looking for an easier one to play. Maybe not even easier, just one that has less of an External Reservoir of Knowledge.

Idk the whole stem vs humanities thing just seems so immature ideg why ppl are so pressed!! Like i am a history grad who now manages teams of data analysts and its like, if you need to learn to code to do what you want to do you can do what i did and bootcamp yourself for 3 months? Take some online certification courses to get more STEM- literate like you dont have to be a MAANG wunderkind to learn more and add value to yourself as a humanities!! But at the same time for me its like. Ok so market forces are in control of what is more "valued" money-wise and i guess if you dont have a clear idea about what you want to do or your professional goals, or if your expectations dont align w reality then it would be a cope for humanities. But there are so so so so SOOOO many times where its like. For the STEM folks in my experience theres a difference between being literate and being literary in a deeper way, with understanding the real importance of the humanities even if the market structure of the last 20 yrs has all but obliterated them. In classes in STEM there is a right anser so the threshold for failure is much lower whereas i do believe its easier to bs your way thru a humanity degree. That doesnt make the humanities themselves mediocre tbh to me it just means that the way they're taught needs to hugely update. Like every STEM major isnt writing the next great american novel or even an intelligent author u feel. Anyway thesis is WE CAN BE BOTH!!!! WE CAN BE BOTH!!! Like i encourage my teams to take as many courses they can across disciplines and ive got our division on those datacamp etc licenses, and ive gotten great results from our technical analysts plus our more humanities-centered employees
And that’s the đŸ”
