jeremy-neil mutual dislike (or at least mistrust) makes even MORE sense after tgr because they are both liars. neil josten was a carefully constructed persona who slowly became real; jeremy knox was a real boy who crafted himself into a persona. neil has spent his life running and clings to the first home he finds; jeremy has spent his life trapped and is not allowed to stay in the place that feels like home to him. neil has always been ready to run; jeremy has always stayed. neil’s smiles come out sharp and dangerous, they are always honest and rarely purposeful, but when they are he knows the effect they have on people; jeremy’s smiles are often calculated, they are a bit too big to be believably sincere if you know him, and they are bright and shining and so tired. neil knew there was a price on his head if he resisted and refused to give in, jeremy is self-destructive because there is a weight on his shoulders. i think they recognize pieces of themselves in each other and immediately feel unable to trust that (especially when it comes to something they care about as much as jean’s healing).

can’t let go of laila’s “would it kill you to fuck someone who respects you?” because there is two sides to jeremy’s poor choices in my opinion. on the one hand, i think he’s pretty aware that the guys he picks are disrespectful assholes and picks them for that exact reason. we know that jeremy mostly avoids talking about his past. he even tends to lie about it or at least talk around it. so hooking up with people who don’t respect him works out great for him because the thing about disrespectful assholes is that they don’t care about emotional intimacy or getting to know him—there is safety in that kind of distance. and even if there is a rejection, it’s not a rejection of him, because they don’t really know him. but it’s still a way to experience a counterfeit kind of closeness. on the other hand, i also believe there’s this ugly small part of him that thinks this is the kind of love he deserves. the kind of love he was taught to think he deserves and learned from every barbed and disrespectful comment thrown his way by his family. amd now he keeps reaffirming this belief with every partner he choses who doesn’t care about him beyond what he has to offer in bed, who doesn’t check up on him unless they’re looking for a quick hookup, who roughens him up non-consensually.

so yeah, to jeremy fucking someone who respects him probably feels like handing them everything they’d need to kill him—because it would mean he’d have to open up and make himself vulnerable enough to invite a level of trust and intimacy and love into that type of relationship that could be ripped away or turn into digust, leaving him feeling more rejected and abandoned and isolated than he already does.

no bc the more i think about it the more crazy i feel. Jeremy using sex as both self-harm and an easy escape but sex with Jean could never be that. Jeremy can't just rush into it with Jean and then take off the minute it's over. With Jean it would have to be slow and careful and it would mean something. Sex with Jean would shatter Jeremy's worldview. Sex with Jean wouldn't leave Jeremy feeling empty and used and embarrassed. Jean wouldn't let it be like that, couldn't let it be like that, because his heart is too good and he cares too much and he knows exactly how it feels to be degraded, and he won't let Jeremy do it to himself anymore, not with him.

when i say i want jeremy knox to crash out i mean i want him to CRASH OUT. i want it to be debilitating. i want it to be brutal. i want him to lose it so bad people think he won't recover. i want him to lose his goddamn mind. i want everyone around him to panic and lose it too, because jeremy is always in control, always knows what he's doing, and he's finally been derailed. i want him to lose control and spiral and devolve and i want all the tentative threads holding him and his family and whatever past transgressions he has to unravel and for him to lose it so badly everyone gets worried that he won't make it out alive. i want every terrible thing in his past, big or small, to catch up with him and eat him alive. i want him to be irretrievable inconsolable unreachable i want him to be so out of it everyone is kind of like "well what the fuck do we do now" like if it's not that kind of a crash out i don't want it.

I do like Raverne though, I think it's got a nice fancy sound to it! (I had kinda suspected it was going to be an R instead of an L, so the fact that it's SO close to Laverne except for that is hilarious to me personally.) and Dragoneye Duke is honestly probably the best translation for his title, I wasn't envying the localizers that one. :') Baur instead of Baul I was NOT expecting, but in retrospect I think his name's supposed to be a reference to the Bauru crocodile, so that actually makes way more sense!

someone else also said Meleanor has become Maleanor, which is the REALLY weird one to me, because I was so surprised it was written as Mel instead of Mal in the first place?! oh god no I can't decide which one I like better. 😭 (I wonder if they might change it to Mal...they have made romanization changes before) (like I remember House of Distraction being corrected to House of Destruction in Playful Land) (I did check and she's still Mel for now, but I dunno, they might Mal her up and some point and save me from having to make a decision about which one to use) (HECK I CAN'T DECIDE)

i don’t think we talk enough about declan being equally as down bad and ‘all or nothing’ with romance as ronan is. like yes ronan said he would start wars and burn cities for adam’s true smile, begged god for adam after he first saw him and fortuitously had all his objects of worship were in one downtown block etc but ronan had known adam atleast 18 months at this stage. whereas declan really risked it all to get tyrian purple overnight for a first date gift after ONE conversation…the man was discussing their marriage as a ‘when’ not an ‘if’ before we even saw them kiss like what’s his excuse lmaoo

i love that whilst laila is jeremy's bff, cat is undeniably jean's. don't get me wrong, i love their friendships as a foursome, and i love the dynamics that each of them have with each other, but jean and cat specifically are the friendship that has my heart the most.

the cooking lessons! she's arguably the first one in california to make jean feel in any way comfortable simply by giving him something to do, and in doing so they create their own little routine and obviously spend a lot of time together. she's so quick to offer him easy affection, kissing him on the top of his head or his temple, winding an arm around his waist when she thinks he's overwhelmed, even just leaning her shoulder against his or touching his knee to ground him so he knows she's there and he's not alone. taking him for that long ride on her motorcycle, driving out to her favourite spot, finding and giving him a sand dollar, just getting him out of his own head for a little while.

she's not afraid to tease him, and he lets her. cat is often the person who seems to be the most vocally outraged on jean's behalf when they learn new information about how he's been treated, and i know jeremy often tells her to drop something if she pushes when jean obviously doesn't want to talk about it, but it's important that jean still sees that rage and knows that it's not directed at him, that it wasn't his fault.

and he learns from her, too. he's learning that he can be spontaneously affectionate with her as well, he's learning to cook, he's learning he can lean on her, he's learning (learned?) to ride a motorbike, something neither jeremy nor laila do, something that's just for them. like, they got MATCHING BIKES are you KIDDING me?

Okay, but what if Colleen's death causes Zane to become completely disillusioned and despise the Ravens? He had already shown that he is willing to go for the throat when he feels wronged. He just lost the woman he loved and he's already graduated, so what has he got to lose?

What's to stop him from exposing the horrors of the Nest? The isolation, the lack of autonomy, the sixteen hour days, and the harsh punishments... I get that there are a lot of things that it would be unrealistic for him to share but–

What if he tells the world about Riko sitting the defence line down and asking them to break Jean? What if he names all of the men who volunteered to assault a minor?
