“Y’know what? Fuck it, let them hear us for all I care. We’re still in your house.”

“We’re outside.” Regina nearly snorted, Janis pulls away exhaling harshly and sulking. “You wanna say that again?” Janis raised a brow, asking.

“Hell no.” Regina bites back a grin, “Kiss me, idiot.”

“Fine, idiot.” Janis obliges, but not before giving Regina’s ass a good squeeze, “Pull that shit again and I’ll make you regret.”

“wow, pony. only 89%? i thought you were good at math.”

“i am.”

“you sure?”

ponyboy gritted his teeth as he huffed, pulling his paper out of your hands as he went back to his seat. right behind you.

if ponyboy didn’t know better, he’d thought that mr. lizweski was out for him. he glared daggers at the back of your head, his jaw still clenched.

99%. that’s such bullshit. you had to be bribing all the teachers to keep on getting first place, right? there’s no way in hell he’d ever come in second.

ponyboy wasn’t even second in track.

89% was all he thought about. in his remaining classes, he pressed down on the paper a little too hard when writing, he was oddly silent around his school friends, and he walked faster—with more of a purpose than anything.

it was clear to his friends that he was agitated, but they didn’t bother asking. each time the topic of you, the reason of his annoyance, was brought up ponyboy went on what seemed like an hour long rant.

“they’re bribing the teachers, right? they have to be! how else would they be getting these stupid marks when they’re busy parting their hair in class, or they’re too busy talking to their friends about, “what’s for lunch?” i am so goddamn tired of it!”

“….you seem to know an awful lot ‘bout y/n for someone who hates ‘em.”

“i do hate them! did you not just hear what i said?”

the rest of the day, ponyboy was in a bad mood. it felt like nothing could pull him out of it, not even when soda grabbed some change to treat him to go get snacks.

you stood out there gas station, head down to look at ground to avoid the random, rather ugly, dude standing above you.

“c’mon, pretty. gimme a smile, why don’t you?”

you stayed silent, turning your head away from him. he reeked of booze, the scent making your skin crawl.

ponyboy seen this, a slight anger bubbling inside him. it was different than what he felt all through today. this was real, genuine anger rather than annoyance.

ignoring soda calling for him and ignoring his subconscious yelling at him, ponyboy stomped toward you and the guy.

he got between the two of you, shoving the guy back slightly.

“they ain’t interested.”

“what’re you? their boyfriend?”

“just lay off.”

“or what?”

the guy pressed, taking a step closer to pony. neither of their glares wavered. pony’s knuckles were almost white with how hard he was clenching his hand.

you fully believe he wouldn’t socked him right then and there if soda hadn’t stepped in and talked the guy away, calming the drunkard a few feet away.

“you didn’t need to step in.”

“it’s not like you were gonna be anything.”

“you don’t know that.”

“i do know that, y/n.”

ponyboy spoke with such a stern tone, you almost believed him against your own will. but, as the whole situation set in, you couldn’t help but feel thankful.

“whatever.”

“whatever?”

he asked, sounding almost offended. pony almost fought a guy for you and all he gets is a goddamn, ‘whatever’?

“..thank you.”

you mumbled quietly, crossing your arms as you leaned back onto the gas station wall, looking down at the gravel below.

“you’re welcome.”

the silence that hung between the two of you was palpable. you shifted your weight from side to side until ponyboy broke the awkwardness.

“so, you come ‘round here often?”

“yeah. my brother works here so i get things for cheap.”

“you got a brother?”

“mhm. soda’s age.”

you confirmed, silence falling between the two of you once more. ponyboy glanced inside the store, seeing your brother work the register.

well, he should be, at least. he was currently being held back from going outside to kick some sense into the creep from earlier.

“you two look alike.”

ponyboy muttered under his breath, a small part of him hoping you wouldn’t hear. his ears went hot with embarrassment when he heard you snicker.

“don’t insult me like that.”

he always knew you were quick witted, but hearing it happen when pony wasn’t the one being made fun of was rare. but, rather funny.

ponyboy understands why your friends are always giggling around you now, as he’s begun to catch himself let out a small chuckle at your words.

“it ain’t a bad thing.”

“it totally is. you just haven’t met ‘em.”

you, yourself, were laughing at your own words. the two of you quickly laughing amongst yourselves, the conversation making 0 sense to anyone but to you guys.

time seemed to tick by faster and faster the more ponyboy got invested into the conversation. you carried yourself with a confidence he couldn’t comprehend.

the way you spoke, the way you stood, the way you looked—it was all so confusing for pony.

soda walked out of the gas station, a plastic bag full of all kinds of snacks as he shouted at his younger brother.

“ponyboy, let’s go!”

“alright, soda!”

the wind was the only thing filling your guys’ ears as he kicked the gravel you two stood on. until you, as always, broke the ice.

“i’ll see you ‘round, 89%.”

“yea. see you at school, 82%.”

you two teased, narrowing your eyes at each other one last time for the night.

even on the car ride home with soda, who calmed down the drunkard and even got close with your brother, ponyboy was still confused.

despite being the best, number one, in english—he couldn’t find the words to describe how he felt about you.

so, he’ll just say he’a neutral on you. until you get a higher grade than him, of course.

Like i said it felt really tropey and by that i meant that it’s just Everything Good Happens forever and…..that’s it ? like idk we were building up to this huge catharsis sort of thing and then we got to it and it was so sudden and not a good payoff and just kind of nothingburger of an ending . the fact that everyone just forgives siffrin bothers me, or at least the fact that they don’t confront them about the shit they’ve said and done. call me a mental illness villainizer but i think if you’re a fucking asshole and doing the most insensitive things to the people you care about then hey, i think those ppl have a right to fucking tell you off for it. likeeee idk being at your lowest point …… not an excuse …. not feeling it chief ……. like sure the message is to move past your mistakes or whatever but ? that doesn’t mean just getting away with it ??? and i just really don’t understand Why everyone forgives him. honestly at the end of the day the ending is just one problem, the root of which are the characters. everyone feels like trope cardboard cutouts. oh, this is the smart one. this is the smol bean. this is the himbo. and they all care for each other btw. - soulmates in every universe, if not romantic then definitely platonic. they’ll find their way to each other, always.

- james has a crooked nose that sirius loves kissing. he’s very possessive about it, actually

- j might be generally a bit thick bc of the whole spoiled-only-child thing but he’s particularly attuned to sirius’ moods and emotions. i can imagine him writing long ass letters to his parents in the first few years whenever something tripped him up (which was, ykno, everything considering how sheltered he was) to so for help and sirius featured a lot in this (mum, how do i help with nightmares? mum, he doesn’t like treacle tart what do i doooooo, mum he wasn’t allowed to fly as a kid this is a travesty, mum he’s sad a lot and chai doesn’t always help, mum i don’t know how to make him smile etc etc)

- this one’s controversial, i think, but i love thinking of sirius as modelling james’ behaviour. we know he grew up being fed violent hatred + a superiority complex the size of Everest yeah? fully believe his process of unlearning started with james (the first time he used the word mudblood, our boy probably clutched his pearls, scandalised, ‘what are you doing u can’t say that!!’ so sirius started turning to j as a barometer for how to act, sometimes, bc he realised he couldn’t trust his family (and by extension, his own) behaviour. this isn’t instant, mind, but a gradual, time & labor intensive process and even after he grew out of it, i think sirius had this subconscious tendency to look for james’ approval.

- i hate the whole ‘james matured for a girl’ arc so my take on it is that his ‘growth’ came from a combination of ailing, elderly parents + rising war tensions + most importantly, sirius. end of 5th year he got a first hand view into the treatment his best mate received by his family and that horror made him want to be the best he could for sirius. i’ve always seen james as a protector and a caregiver, someone who takes people under his wing & looks after them, and i don’t think it was ever more obvious than around sirius. post 5th year, he gained a focus that he lacked before and would spend a lot of time just picking up on skills that could help him be better. duelling, defence, first aid, knitting, cooking etc etc. anything to feel useful.

- the shift from friendship to romantic would be tricky & probably require outside intervention or a lot of time, i think. they were already so close as friends that it just never occurs to them to take it any further ykno? their hearts & souls are intertwined, they’re super physically affectionate, and they’re already each other’s no. 1. so someone either has to bring it to their attention, they take yeaaaaars to realise ‘huh. this isn’t how i feel towards others’ or they live a wonderfully fulfilling qpp life together.

- i’ve talked about this before but physical!!! affection!!! and not just in terms of like, kisses or hugs but touch. they’re always in contact in some way. it’s comforting, safe. arms around waists, shoulders, hips/chin resting on the other, leg slung across, hand on a back or leg. you get it right? it’s subconscious, it’s natural, and they don’t even realise they’re doing it unless someone points it out

- sunshine and sunshine protector!!!! james was loud and brash and took all the space in a room. he was also sensitive bc he’s not told no often so when it has to be done, u need to do it in a certain way so he doesn’t internalise it as a personal failing and shut down. sirius is the best one to do it bc he can stand up to james w/o being intimidated + realise that the carrot works better than the stick w him. there’s a very real risk of his light fading out. at the same time, this makes sirius very protective of him. it’s why i wrote shovel talk. even in a universe where lily & sirius were friends, i think he’ll have a Talk with her to confirm her intentions. sirius is not willing to take chances with his james.

- pet names! james called sirius darling and my love and honey and sweetheart because he’s an old soul in a young body. sirius called james love (and sometime babe/baby). their go to for each other was ‘si’ and ‘jamie’ respectively, which was a term of affection on its own bc only they used it, no one else.

- james has *always* been attracted to sirius; he just didn’t realise it bc he thought this was how everyone felt towards sirius. ‘oh yeah he’s so ethereally beautiful, it’s just like, a fact of life and everyone knows it’ and thinks the random boners are normal until one day he realised that, no, that’s not actually the norm & he’s just a simp who thinks everything sirius does is perfect (think chin in hand, heart eyes, sighing)
