25.08.2023 - Anreise Tag 2

au where simon is at his sister's 30th birthday party at a bar in stockholm and he's waiting to order another glass of soda when someone claps him on the back and says "do him next!" simon is like excuse me but it turns out one of the other guests is this guy named wilhelm who's a sommelier and he's apparently really good at guessing people's drink of choice just from talking to them for a few minutes and he's embarrassed that his friend is parading him around but he hesitantly strikes up a conversation with simon. every few minutes wilhelm guesses a different drink - "gewürztraminer?" "sidecar?" and each time simon smiles and shakes his head. wilhelm's friend gets bored and drifts away, but they stay there, getting to know each other, for over an hour, wilhelm's guesses growing less frequent and more off-base. eventually simon puts him out of his misery: "i should tell you i don't actually drink." wilhelm blushes. "oh, i figured that out a while ago, i just didn't want to stop talking to you"

Wines for the Daedric Princes
Azura: Light rose and sweetened whites, especially gewürztraminer, for its lovely rose scent and taste.
Boethiah: red light bodied wines that remind one of spilled blood; cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir.
Clavius Vile: wines of deeper nature and deception, a buttery chardonnay or meaty sweet port, complex blends and vintages unseen yet a deal for what they may be.
Hermaeus Mora: natural wines in which their secrets are hidden, you will never know how the wine went through its fermentation.
Hircine: natural wines, made from wild undomesticated grapes within the wilderness. The hunt for them alone is one of his pursuits.
Ithelia: obscure, indigenous wines that fathered the modern wine world yet remain locked and lost to time. Gouais blanc and other such forgotten yet vital varieties.
Jyggalag: traditional wines, bordeauxs and such, that invoke the order and tradition of old world wines.
Malacath: Table wines, those of the lower class, longstanding for their value. Wines enjoyed with food, considered weak yet have been a table of human culture for ages.
Mehrunes Dagon: Syrah and burnt wines, wines made from the regional smoke that lingers within the bottle and upon the tongue.
Mephala: Wines of controversy and disguise, such as a purple pinot noir or the market-changing jackson Chardonnay. Cold-hardy hybrid wines as well, such as Chambourcin, that seek to change the market itself.
Meridia: Bright wines, light and full of life, such as a cold region chardonnay or vigonier. Sparkling wines as well, brimming with light and air, such as prosecco,
Molag Baal: brutal, tannic wines, such as Cabernet Franc, the colour of blood and barely drinkable, begetting suffering for the drinker.
Namira: Old wines, sherries and noble rot wines, filled with age and decay.
Nocturnal: blueberry wines that invoke the night sky, full bodied reds made to invoke mystery such as petite syrah.
Peryite: noble rot wines, saturnes and such, made from the botrytis bunch rot in such a way that a wine become dried of water and therefore sweet.
Sanguine: All wines, truly, but especially those of higher ABV meant to draw in indulgence.
Sheogorath: wines of chaos. peeps wine and other such creatures.
Vaermina: Muscats and sweet wines, to lure one into a drink yet end up blacked out due to overindulgence, the slow draw into more until sleep.

in class we got to try some lovely sweet gewürztraminer, and I have never had a wine that tasted and smelled so sweetly of a rose. I've come to regard this as a wine for many deities, but I imagine Aphrodite, Anthea, Hera, and other such love and floral deities would adore it.

Maybe Spy and Medic were on a contract together. It was a tough and stressful mission but they finally got the job done so they go to celebrate in Spys Smoking room.
Spy was not a man used to sharing.
He did not share his possessions, he did not share his secrets—he did not share his face under most circumstances. He was private and alluring and oh-so-very mysterious, and he liked it that way, and so he shared little of himself with the world. For everything he exposed he hid thrice as much, left no one the wiser to the truths behind his mask.
But for him? For him, he would make an exception.
Medic was wild and captivating in his maniacal openness. He delighted in brutal honesty, laughing often and unrestrained, smiling too widely and with too many teeth. His eyes were like the edges of shattered glass, very sharp and just as transparent, and he was neither ashamed nor reluctant to show it. He was a whirlwind of naked, glorious emotion.
Spy would move mountains for him, would topple governments and drain oceans—but more than that, Spy had learned to share. Little things here and there at first, meaningless bits of everyday life, then, like a floodgate opening, his very heart and soul, laid bare in many other ways than lying on an operating table.
And amazingly, in turn, Medic had revealed an incredible talent for possessiveness. He had, naturally, matched Spy every step of the way, and instead of betraying that vulnerability had taken it reverently and locked it behind closed doors, threatening anyone who so much as thought about trying to get in with fates far worse than dismemberment.
For Medic, he could share. Had shared nearly everything, his secrets and his possessions and his face—and, most importantly, his space.
Their chemistry on the battlefield had not gone unnoticed, despite how little they usually interacted with each other on the job, and the Administrator had offered them a rise in pay on one condition: they would take up a one-time contract outside of work hours, which required both political scheming and medical knowledge, and once the job was done would return to their usual routine and never mention it again.
Medic had been eager to see it through and Spy was unable to say no to him, and so they had gone.
It had been harrowing. They'd had to travel outside of Respawn radius, for one, and for another they had received the wrong intel and were forced to improvise the entire way through. They had managed to come back in one piece, of course, but the stress of it all took an entire decade off Spy's life and he had the gray hairs to prove it.
Medic had looked even worse for wear, and after listening to him call the Administrator more than several colourful terms in German on the ride back to base, Spy had decided a night of relaxation was well overdue. It was a Friday, after all, and both teams had the weekend off.
So they had retreated—not to the infirmary, as they usually did, or to either of their rooms, as they more rarely did, but to Spy's cherished smoking room.
A place which was not among the things he had shared with Medic. Judging by the way Medic's eyebrows rose into his hairline, a place Medic had never expected to see, though that certainly hadn't dampened his delight in any way. Spy had proudly shown him his collection of famous literature and fine art, and then introduced him to his near-limitless wine reserve.
Medic had been ecstatic. He'd predictably chosen a white wine for himself, a dry Gewürztraminer with passion fruit undertones, while Spy had settled for nothing less than a cherry-red 1929 Romanée-Conti, the most expensive bottle he owned.
They had settled by the unlit fireplace with their respective beverages, letting the moonlight shine through the half-open curtains, and talked at length of anything but work. Spy had been on his third or fifth glass and in the middle of animatedly relaying the history behind how he had conned his way into owning a bottle of the most sought-after red wine in the world, which had involved a lot of charm, wits and subtle blackmail, when he chanced a look at Medic's face to make sure he was still listening—the man had a tendency to fall asleep after too much alcohol.
Medic was not asleep. He was leaning on the armrest of his armchair, chin propped up on his hand, and was watching Spy very closely with a positively lovestruck smile on his face. The moonlight illuminated his profile, highlighting the salt and pepper by his temples and the small crow's feet at the corners of his eyes.
His glass lay on the coffee table between them, still a third of the way full.
Spy's wine-addled thoughts immediately ground to a halt, whatever words he'd been meaning to say dying a sudden death on his tongue.
In the silence that followed, Medic's smile widened. He said nothing, watching with visible pleasure as Spy's face—unmasked, always unmasked when it was just the two of them—flushed a no-doubt embarrassing shade of scarlet from completely non-alcohol-related reasons.
Spy stuttered out a few nonsensical syllables, trying desperately to regain the smooth dignity he was known for until Medic took pity on him and let out a little drunken laugh.
"Something wrong?" he asked, tilting his head at that angle that made Spy want to kiss him, that he knew made Spy want to kiss him.
Spy finally found his voice. Not at all, he meant to say, or perhaps some flirtatious line about how their chairs were too far apart for his liking, but no, what tumbled out instead was—
"I love you."
It came out all at once, the words nearly blending together, and Spy was startled by the sincere intensity of his voice. Medic, too, startled, straightening in his seat with wide eyes.
It was not the first time Spy had said it, and it would certainly not be the last, but something about the setting—the privacy of his smoking room, the gentle glow of the moon, the pure, unabashed affection in Medic's eyes—made it hit close to the heart with all the permanent finality of a wedding vow.
The comparison sent a shot of molten liquid straight down his spine, and he felt his cheeks heat up further under the rush. Medic's own cheeks were a bright ruby red, and Spy could see even from the distance between them that his pupils were blown wide—
Spy opened his mouth to say something, but then he blinked and Medic was on his feet, and then he blinked again and Medic was straddling his lap and cupping his face and kissing him with all the fervour and pent-up desire of a first-time lover. Spy let out a low noise of surprise and then instantly melted into him, hardly noticing when the glass slipped through his fingers and its precious contents spilled over his carpet; the world sharpened down to the warm body in his lap and the feeling of lips brushing fervently against his own.
Even when they broke apart for air, breaths mingling with every gasp, Medic stayed put, touching his forehead to Spy's and letting his thumbs caress his cheeks. Spy met his half-lidded eyes and saw that yes, his pupils were definitely blown wide, but more importantly he was gazing at Spy with unfiltered adoration, as though he had the privilege of looking upon an infinitely precious treasure.
Mein schatz, Medic called him in their most intimate moments, and Spy had never believed it as much as he did then.
Spy leaned forward and pressed a single, lingering kiss against his lips, simply to feel Medic smile against him. Then—
"I take it you love me back?" he whispered into the space between them.
Spy knew the answer, of course he did—Medic had probably said it more than he had, if he did the math—but he relished the teasing, especially when it made Medic laugh the way he was laughing now, all open delight in a way that made the muscles in his face ache.
"Yes," Medic said, still giggling as he kissed him back, "Yes, I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you."
So Spy was not used to sharing. He shared not his possessions, nor his secrets or his space. But, he mused as Medic unraveled him under the pale moonlight, wine on their lips and passion in their veins, he could get used to sharing some things every now and then.
It was only fair.

Thanks for all the love! I really enjoyed frolicking in my Ever After dress at Castello di Amorosa. The delicious Gewürztraminer options they have on the menu were also well worth the trip.

Me: Okay, I’m going to learn more about the region in France that my father’s family is from! 😊 🇫🇷
Wikipedia: The two largest cities in this region are Strasbourg and Mulhouse. Popular regional dishes include fleischschnackas and flammekueche. The wine produced in this region is called Gewürztraminer.
Me: These are literally all German words?? Are we sure this is France??? 😨 🇩🇪

Wines of Thedas
Wines are often named after the place where they originate. As a result, many terms that we use for wines would be anachronistic in Thedas... so I dreamed up some wines that you can use in your writing and worldbuilding! In a couple places, I also came up with in-world explanations for where these wines could have derived their names.
In parentheses, I included the Real World wine the Thedas head canon was inspired by, when applicable.
Enjoy!
ICE WINES OF THEDAS
These are head canons I have for wines that are made from grapes that grow in humid continental climates where the first frost brings out the sugars in the grapes before they are harvested. While the climate of continental Ferelden would be the right temperature, any wines made there are kept locally and are not part of the greater Orlesian wine trade, which is dominated by wineries from the Frostbacks to the Minanter.
Cabernet Orles (Cabernet Franc) - The primary wine in Orlais made from black grapes. There are many varieties, named after local wineries.
Merlot - The name for this wine is derived from the Orlesian word merle, or blackbird. It is another common variety throughout the vineyards of Orlais, a dark-blue colored grape variety.
Dalish Wine (Gewürztraminer) - This is an aromatic wine grape and is often called "Spiced Dalish" for its bouquet. These grapes are grown exclusively on the western slopes of the Frostback Mountains. The name is a bit of a misnomer, having nothing to do with actual Dalish clans, instead coming from the region of the Dales where the wineries are located.  The human nobles who run the collection of wineries have tried to rebrand their wines, but despite many efforts to get another name to circulate, the term "Dalish Wine" still persists.
Cœurling (Riesling) - A white grape variety that originates in the Orlesian heartlands. It typically has notes of apple and tree fruit. Varieties that are grown along the Minanter tend to develop more citrus and peach notes.
Veltlin Verde (Grüner Veltliner) - Hailing from the Green Dales in the northern Minanter river basin, this sweet and citrus wine is named after the Antivan village Veltlin (not a canon location) where it was first fermented centuries ago.
Chenin Blanc - A white wine grape variety from the Chenin river valley in Central Orlais, on the coast of the Waking Sea. It is highly acidic and is used in the production of sparkling and dessert wines.
Armitage Blanc - A recent wine that was created by Jean Louis Armitage, who hails from Verchiel. He was trying to craft a new grape for the production of brandy and ended up with this winter-hardy variety instead. It is very popular for its high sugar levels and hardiness and has a fruity taste, a trendy wine du jour.
OTHER WINES
Cloudwater - In the wetlands of the Minanter River Delta, rice grows as a staple. The Dalish in the vicinity, including Clan Lavellan, use the rice to ferment this liquor that appears cloudy in color due to the unfermented rice solids that remain suspended in the alcohol. The Dalish use this cloudwater as a key ingredient in many tonics and syrup, and you can often find bottles of it for trade that have been infused with seasonal fruits such as wild strawberries, blackberries and cassis.
Seleny (Champagne) -  This sparkling wine originated in the Seleny river basin of western Antiva. It is renown for its secondary fermentation that causes the wine in the bottle to produce carbonation.
Seleny became associated with royalty in the Black Age, when Asha Campana became the Queen of Antiva. As a favorite wine of the queen, she sent bottles of it as a gift to celebrate each new wedding she arranged for her children and grandchildren across Thedas. The tradition was adopted to pop a cork of Seleny in celebration at wedding ceremonies, and the wine is often affectionately nicknamed “campane”--or the Orlesian bastardization “champagne”--for this reason.
Note from the author:
If you’d like to use these wines in your fanfic writing or DA roleplay, feel free to do so. You don’t have to credit me, but if you want to, you can tag me bc I’d really get a kick out of seeing them in action!
I have lots of friends and fellow fans to thank for brainstorming these with me or giving me prompts that led to these creations. I’m always a sucker for creating fictional culinary delights for Thedas, so if you wanna chat foods or world building (especially for Antiva), hit me up!
Xoxo Kitty
