all this talk of Gilbert and Anne has me revisiting their first scene together because from the beginning Gilbert, while immature, demonstrates the sense of integrity that makes him so appealing (also included is the passage that shows how this boy is gone from start)

9 things of proof that gilbert was in love with anne even before she smashed her slate over his head

he was so intrigued by her when he first intercepted billy that he spent the entire walk to school trailing behind her and asking her name, long after anyone else wouldve given up

when everyones saying he should stay away from anne, he defends her saying he doesn't care where she came from

he goes even further by saying shes a cute girl not knowing that most of the kids, anne included, thinks shes ugly and homely and such

the whole class but diana and gilbert are laughing at anne for her dramatic reading, making fun of her really, diana of course knows thats just how anne is, but gilbert doesnt know that anne was serious he suspects it "She's good. Invested." but he cant know for sure, he just knows there's something different about her

at lunch, he walks out looking for her to give her an apple from his orchard, since theyre so sweet and he thinks she'll like them and he wants to talk to her, he's confused and slightly affronted that shes not supposed to talk to him, as she walks away, he stares after her and sighs

he wants to know more about her and he wants to know why she cant talk to him, in short he wants her attention, so he throws a piece of paper at her, maybe there was something written on it, maybe not, but he needs to talk to her

she doesnt talk to him, doesnt even look at him, barely reacts at all, so he tries again with a piece of chalk, his only way of doing schoolwork, to no avail

hes dying to talk to her so he decides to take it to her, walks himself right on over and offers the apple again, this time like its an accident "Whoops" he is blantly flirting at this point

at this point, hes desperate, he needs to talk to her and hes getting nowhere with being his usual gentle and charming self, so he calls her carrots and yanks her hair
