“If you had married Roy Gardner, now,” continued Gilbert mercilessly, “you could have been ‘a leader in social and intellectual circles far away from Four Winds.’“
“Gilbert Blythe!”
“You know you were in love with him at one time, Anne.”
“Gilbert, that’s mean— ‘pisen mean, just like all the men,’ as Miss Cornelia says. I never was in love with him. I only imagined I was. You know that. You know I’d rather be your wife in our house of dreams and fulfillment than a queen in a palace.”

Distracted (PART 2 of Truce)
Gilbert Blythe x Reader
[FLUFF]
Requested: Yes
Summary: After the truce between the reader and Gilbert, things start to feel tense and awkward between the two.
- - -
Anne and Diana stood at the foot of your bed, giggling with eachother as they waited for you to finish getting dressed. They came over to help you get ready for your - as they called - study date with Gilbert.
You trudged into the room, face beet red at the fact that the two girls had been fantasizing about this day for ages.
"Oh, Y/N, you look magnificent," said Anne.
You smiled in appreciation.
"You don't think it's too much?" you asked.
Shaking her head vigorously she took your hand and led you to your mirror. She took your hair in her hands, pinning it back with a little bow.
Diana joined her to revel at your dress.
"He will not be able to take his eyes off of you," she said.
You whined turning to both of them.
"Don't make this a big deal! I'm only going there to study."
Anne and Diana gave eachother a look, grinning at eachother devilishly.
"Well after he sees you, maybe that'll change."
You playfully shove Anne back, widening your eyes at her statement. Not that she was necessarily wrong.
"Anne Shirley Cuthbert! Stop it."
Laughing at her antics you picked up your basket, stuffing your math books inside. Secretly you were hoping Gilbert would be impressed by your attire - not that you were dressing for him...
You walked back to the mirror, eyeing yourself over once more. The dress reached down to the bottom of your knees, with your autumn coat complimenting the colours perfectly.
Okay... maybe you had thought out your outfit a little too much.
Spinning around you grab your friends' hands, hoping their excitement would give you courage to leave the house and see Gilbert.
"I think I'm ready."
The girls shriek, jumping up and down. With one swift move they push you out of your bedroom door. Taking a deep breath you trail down the stairs, gripping onto the bannister for dear life. You prayed that this wouldn't be a mistake - what would you two even talk about?
Oh no...
Turning your head back, you tried to go back upstairs.
"No. You are going. Now," said Diana, grabbing your shoulders and bringing you to the front door.
With one last look of encouragement they practically shove you out the door.
"Go make us proud," yelled Anne as you trudge down the porch.
You keep walking. You were afraid that if you looked back at your house you would want to run back inside.
Which you sort of did.
Maybe this wouldn't be so bad...
- - -
The wind in the air caused the grass to ripple like waves. It was the only thing you could focus on as your nerves skyrocketed.
You didn't even know why - I mean you had never felt this way about him before. You always had something witty to say, always been able to look him in the eye and stay calm. Yet the upcoming days to your study session you had barely been able to have a conversation with him without feeling nervous.
The closer you got to his door, the more you wanted to turn back and go home.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) for you, Gilbert had been waiting at the door for you to come. So, as soon as you reached his front door he had already swung it open ready to invite you in.
"Y/N, fancy seeing you here," he said.
A faint smile grew on your face upon seeing his cheery self. Funnily enough, he was both the reason and the cure to your anxiety.
"Of course. I'm ready to finally beat you at math," you responded, still unable to wipe your growing grin.
Moving aside, Gilbert extends his arm out, inviting you in. You set your basket on the table as he reaches for your shoulders, slowly taking your jacket off.
Oh wow.
It was weirdly intimate - with his breath fanning across your neck as he leaned over to reach your height. His fingers brushed across the fabric on your back, pulling the winter coat down from your shivering frame.
You were too afraid to turn your head back to look at him. I mean he was right there.
"So..." he trails off as he hooks your clothing onto the coat hanger.
"I was thinking we could start with algebra?"
You roll your eyes, smiling at his words.
"Gilbert I may be bad at math but I'm not that hopeless," you respond.
To be fair to him all he had seen from you since he got back from his travels was you blanking out on every question asked in class. It wasn't necessarily your fault. You were just always... preoccupied. Preoccupied looking at Gilbert, that is.
Yes. You admitted it. Your mind had been full of thoughts of him ever since he returned to school. The way his eyes glinted in the sunlight, turning his previously black eyes into a warm chocolate colour. Or the way his curls messed up when he'd rush into class on a windy day, scarf strewn about the place.
He was just... cute. Gilbert Blythe was cute.
"Earth to Y/N?"
Speak of the devil.
You were brought back to your senses at the sound of his voice. He had this sweet look on his face as if he was worried about you. His eyebrows were furrowed as he reached a hand over to grab your shoulder.
"Sorry did you say something?"
"I asked where you wanted to start, you know since you definitely have algebra down perfectly," he added the last part teasingly.
You raise an eyebrow at him. Was he seriously starting this right now?
"Right... I was thinking trigonometry."
Before turning away you caught his eyes gazing at your dress, drinking you in with every fibre of his being. They trailed down from your collarbone all the way to the hem, admiring (unbeknownst to him) Diana and Anne's handiwork.
You were trailing off a lot, your mind clearly elsewhere. And he totally knew.
You caught a small grin playing on his lips as he stared at you, mesmerized. His lips, which you now noticed, were incredibly pink and swollen from the cold outside, the blush reaching his cheeks.
"You were outside?" you asked.
"Already changing topics I see," he says as he pulls out a chair for you, proceeding to take a seat across from you.
Again, you rolled your eyes, but took a seat anyway.
He had started explaining the basics to you, his hand motions exaggerating with every word he spoke. However your mind began to wander.
How his soft hands would feel against yours, warming you up on a cold day. Or maybe how it would feel to have his hair tickle the back of your neck as you two hugged, or-
"Y/N!" once again you were shocked out of your thoughts.
You smiled apologetically and muttered a meek 'sorry' before focusing your attention again.
You couldn't believe you were letting yourself be distracted by Gilbert Blythe. For the longest time you had waited for this day to finally come, and now that it was here you couldn't stop thinking about him - even though he was literally right there.
You all but groaned internally, becoming aggravated with your lack of concentration. This was hopeless.
All of a sudden you heard a book snap closed.
You jolt upwards, straightening your back. Shit. You were too focused on not focusing that you stopped focusing!
"I have a sense something might be on your mind?"
Your eyes shifted around the room, trying to look anywhere but at him. Why was this so damn hard? He was just some silly boy who was trying to help you. All you can think about is his stupid smile and his-
"Y/N! Seriously are you feeling okay? You don't seem like yourself."
He had moved now to stand infront of you, hand rested on the back of your chair. He leaned over to take a good look at you. Reaching his hand over to your forehead, he felt the temperature with the back of his hand.
It was warm, soft, and his touch was so tender that you could melt right there.
"I'm okay. Just been distracted lately."
You take his hand from your forehead, skin buzzing at the contact of your fingers almost intertwining together. You place his hand on the table right next to you. This movement had caused his arms to encase around you, meaning you were trapped between him, the chair, and the table.
"Oh yeah?" he asked.
Oh my God. It was killing you being this close to him, yet so, so far.
You nodded, unable to open your mouth in fear that all would come out was incoherent jumbles.
"I can't hear you," responded to your incompetence.
"Yes. I- I have."
"With...?"
His face grew dangerously close to you, breath fanning across your face. His brown curls tumbled onto his eyebrow, blocking his vision slightly.
Your hand slowly raised up, all but trembling in anxiety. Gently, and excruciatingly slow, you push his hair back from his eyes.
His breath hitched in his throat. You had no idea the effect you were having on him, considering he had been trying to hide it all day.
"Why don't we do something about it, then? You wanna talk to me?"
He always knew he liked you. There was never a doubt in his mind - and now as you sat across from him, cheeks reddening by the second, he had no doubt you felt the same.
You were at a loss for words. It's not that you didn't want to tell him. You just didn't know how. Especially with the way your words would catch in your throat everytime you tried.
"Y/N," he whispered. It would've been inaudible if it weren't for the fact that his face was 2 inches away from yours.
Silently, you edged yourself closer to him, now basically sitting at the end of the seat.
His knuckles were now white, holding onto the back of your chair for dear life. He wanted to kiss you, to make a move, but he also desperately wanted to hear you say what he's always wanted you to.
"Kiss me."
And with that any and all constraint he had before diminished.
His lips crashed into yours, the hand that was gripping the chair was now supporting your lower back as you arched closer to him, needing to be as close as possible to him.
His teeth grazed your bottom lip, which caused you to gasp, allowing his tongue to finally massage yours.
You sighed, leaning back and grabbing the back of his neck to lead him towards you. His lips were burning with the sensation of yours against his, and he didn't know if he wanted to pull away.
If it weren't for his lack of oxygen he wouldn't have.
Moving away, but only slightly, you two caught your breath together, your huffs and pants melding into one.
"You still distracted?" he asked, still breathing heavily.
"Now more than ever."
And with that, your lips met once again. Now more passionate than before, as he held onto your waist for stability.
Standing up, you pressed your palms onto his chest, applying pressure to push him backwards.
"If we don't stop we'll never get back to the math problem," you said in a hushed manner.
"Like you were paying attention anyway."
With a playful smack, you pecked his cheek and sat back down, gesturing for him to do the same. He agreed only after you promised that if you get through this question undisturbed, you would have another break with him.
It's safe to say you never finished the trigonometry question.

ANNE: Gil!
GILBERT: The politics of this organization are more than I ever bargained for.
ANNE: Sorry. It doesn’t seem right that I should be so excited then. I want you to read it.
GILBERT: You’re done.
ANNE: We’re submitting it tomorrow.
SCENE: A park
GILBERT: It’s the best of everything you’ve ever written.
ANNE: YES! Are you certain?
GILBERT: So much so that I have no idea why you are going to allow him to put his name on it alongside yours.
ANNE: Because I couldn’t have done it without him. And you, too.
GILBERT: Oh, can I put my name on it, too?
ANNE: What if this is the only chance I ever have of getting it published?
GILBERT: Don’t sell yourself short.
ANNE: I’m not. Jack is submitting it tomorrow under both our names.
GILBERT: Okay. I can’t stop you. I just think you deserve a proper credit.

Anne: I studied Gilbert Blythe long and hard to figure out why I hated him so much—
Anne: —but that blossomed into primal desire, as these things often do.

There's something special about soon-to-be-couples who refer to themselves as "a team"! It signifies a beautiful relationship where two people are equal, have mutual respect, share values, and work together toward common goals. P.S. These are two of my OTPs. 🥰

Wedding night head cannons with Gilbert Blythe and fem!reader?
Gilbert Blythe x Reader
[FLUFF]
- - -
when i say every single wedding plan went by you first before he confirmed, i mean every. single. one
"do you like these purple flowers?"
"is this cloth ok for the tables?"
"you're okay with all of Bash's family coming?"
you assured him it was as much his wedding as yours and that he could make his own choices
but he just wanted it to be absolutely perfect for the both of you
so if that meant running every idea by you, he would
you made sure that he didn't have even a slight inkling of what your dress looked like - just in case the superstition was right
because of this, you of course brought the girls to go dress shopping with you
they lived vicariously through you as they helped you pick out the perfect one
"oh Y/N, please try on another one!"
"Anne I've already tried on about 30!"
"look how perfect it is though. pleaseeee?"
you of course gave in and let the girls have their fun, dancing along with them when they decided to act out the wedding dances
taking Diana's hand you let her bring you across the floor, laughing as the other customers rolled their eyes at you
but you didn't care
you're only young once, and especially now being engaged you wanted to make the best of the time you have left as a young adult with your closest friends
Gilbert had insisted on you wearing his mother's wedding veil
he claimed that she had always wished to pass hers down to her daughter, or if not, then to at least see Gilbert's beloved wear it at his wedding
"I want you to have it - she'd be so happy to see somebody as beautiful as you carry on this veil's legacy"
you blushed immensly when he later mentioned that one day you could also pass it down to your daughters
now, as you stared at yourself in the mirror, your bridesmaids pampering you and making sure your trail was clean, and that your veil covered your face and hair accordingly, you couldn't believe the day was finally here
never did you imagine marrying Gilbert during your first interactions, but as time passed on and you developed a crush, this day was something you only wished for in dreams
and now it's real. and it's happening. and you're absolutely freaking out
as Anne and Ruby perfect your dress one last time, they go take their seats with the rest of the girls as they await your entrance
you were freaking out internally
but once the music began and the doors opened
and you made eye contact with your husband-to-be, all your worries dissolved into nothing as you now were overwhelmed with joy and love
your new chapter begins now
Gilbert's eyes watered as you trailed down the aisle, overjoyed at the sight of his fiancé in his mother's veil, wearing the most beautiful wedding dress he could ever imagine
when it was time for his vows, he tried everything in his power to not trip over his words
he was taken away by you and how ethereal you looked in your dress
and how it was finally time to guarantee the rest of your lives together
Gilbert - always a romantic - picked you up as soon as you kissed at the alter, walking you out of the building bridal style as flowers and cheers were thrown your way
it really was a night to remember
the cake that was made for you was kept as a surprise
so when the reception came and Marilla and Anne walked out with the cake you were enthralled
he made it your favorite colour, topped with fruit and leaves (per Anne's decor decisions)
it was gorgeous
and it tasted even better as you two cut the first slice together, feeding it to eachother and getting icing all over your faces
the rest of the night was filled with laughter and dance as you celebrated your new marriage
your first dance as bride and groom was everything you could've hoped for
his eyes were glued to you as he sweeped you across the floor, all eyes on the both of you
but neither of you noticed as you were entranced with eachother
everybody else in the room dissappeared and it was just you two, Mr and Mrs Blythe, dancing away
once you two were driven away in your carriages, with you throwing your bouquet over your shoulder (to which Ruby desperately caught), you held hands, finally able to be as affectionate as you want
married life carries a new and different perspective to your lives
but I'm not goin to lie, arriving to the Blythe residence at last, with the stars and moon shining bright above your faces, you felt both relieved and sort of scared
this was going to be your first night awah from home, in a house you've never slept in before, with people you're not used to being around (i.e Bash and Mary)
of course you loved them all, but it was different, and the thought terrified you
especially with the implications that you had to consumate your marriage after the wedding
that was something that had slipped your mind up until the moment Gilbert opened the door for you to walk inside his - your - home
but instead of doing anything of the sort, Gilbert showed you to your room
"would you like to sleep in your own bed tonight?" he asked
you weren't sure
maybe being alone scared you more than the thought of finally "sealing your marriage" (which you thought was bullshit. your marriage was sealed as soon as your vows were made)
you shook your head and Gilbert gently took your hand in his and brought you to his room
he quickly noticed your discomfort and he assured you that you didn't have to do anything you didn't want to
"honestly I don't think I'm ready yet either" he admitted
so instead, he helped you change out of your many layers of clothing, untying your corset and leaving you a spare pair of sleeping clothes on the bed as he left the room to go fetch two cups of tea
leaving the bedroom you found Gilbert cuddled onto the couch, with a blanket and tea awaiting you
the rest of the night was filled with recountings of the wedding as you laughed and sat next to the warm fireplace
at this moment you knew this marriage was going to be one of companionship and understanding
you had not felt uncomfortable the whole night, and as your head rested on Gilbert's shoulder, you felt more at home than ever
"you have made me the happiest man - I can't wait to spend forever with you"
all your previous worries died out as you fell asleep in his arms, empty cup fallen to the side
Bash and Mary came home in the morning only to find you two intertwined with eachother, fireplace now empty, and two empty cups rolled onto the carpet

“Gilbert Blythe,” answered Anne, vexed to find herself blushing. “I met him on Barry’s hill.” “I didn’t think you and Gilbert Blythe were such good friends that you’d stand for half an hour at the gate talking to him,” said Marilla with a dry smile.

I love this black and white photo of Anne and Gilbert. I still wished they smiled just a little bit while they were getting married. They are still and always will be my favorite fictional couple. 💜💕
