I FIGURED OUT WHY THERE ARE AFO SIMPS

Most anime fans have one weakness: white haired anime men. They see white hair and go nuts (I, myself, go feral for Kakashi)

AFO, Gojo, Kakashi, Yoichi, Killua, Inuyasha, Shiggy, Gintoki, Jiraiya, Toshiro, Tobirama, Licht, Garou, Natsou, Tengen, Kanade.

Since many AFO simps have started simping for him back when he was only known as a potato, this implies that the white haired anime men weakness is so powerful that it can turn people into simps without them having to see the white hair.

I think if you somehow coded gintama into a machine, like if you could convert all its themes and devices and alignments into True (Impossible) Math it would hallucinate a character serving as gintoki’s love interest in the present, a sort of kurokono of the present/future rather than the past, because by all means that’s what the machine would THINK would exist there, a character that gintoki gets close to and serves to highlight his character arc through that vulnerability, in parallel to his love interests from the past, new loves vs old loves. and the machine wouldn’t produce this ghostly figure every time, but it would do it from time to time. then we would talk about the limitations of even the perfect Impossible Math Machine to process and reconcile the aromantic (in the literal sense) and unreachable nature of gin-san with the need for him to connect with and touch every other character, and we would write essays about why in the past j4 polycule so real but gintoki’s further development, his further honing and actualisation happens in a platonic, familial setting (returning us to the shouyou root). and then we would ask ourselves, well if it is a platonic route, why does the machine hallucinate this love interest? and there would be a lot of potential answers to that. but in any case the machine would highlight all the main areas of uneasable tension in gintama’s story, but no matter the contradictions it would always keep running, it wouldn’t cease to function, but instead it would hallucinate things and figures like this present-kurokono

anyway they tried building a really shitty version of this machine in 2013 and it spat out be forever yorozuya and then inside the machine there was a smaller machine (tama) and tama kept trying to do it but she is inside. the story

Gintoki is my boyfriend (in the world's most aro4aro way possible) and Takasugi is my girlfriend (in the world's most chump who gets pulled by femme fatale to a bad end way possible) but Katsura Kotaro is my little chew toy and I just HRRGBFGGGFHFHHHHHGHHGGGG ARF ARF ARF ARF ARF ARF. He can access being Shoyo-coded in ways that Gintoki and Takasugi don't even understand. Gintoki and Takasugi can elicit an overwhelming emotional response but they're all human emotions capable of being explained and understood whereas Zura and Sakamoto elicit shrimp emotions.

Do you ever think about how Zura didn't get to see Shoyo face to face one last time. Because he's staying behind and making sure people got out alive. There's not even a scale that he has to balance between Shoyo and everything else. Do you think about how Takasugi included Zura in his belief that Shoyo should have survived while he should have died. Do you think about the fact that Katsura Kotaro does not have a monster in his chest in the shape of Shoyo that howls incessantly because inside of him is a seventh dimensional prism that the human mind can't understand and also a two dimensional flowchart in which the results can only be somewhere on a scale of dignified embodiment of Bushido to clownery. Do you think about how his most common gag about his name also is constantly reinforcing the one seam line that runs split down his middle. Of course he doesn't howl about Shoyo, his own monster is calm because it is undone by Gintoki who is of course alive and well and stupid as ever.

Of course in this polycule Sakamoto is my pet puppy who has ruined my collection of Miki Shinichiro content but I forgive him and also I'm his dog and he's going to abandon me on the side of a highway or possibly save my life or maybe he's actually my pet rock and no matter how much i chew on him his insides are unfathomable to me despite being purely and upsettingly consistent all the way through. He's a crystal made up a single molecule of some substance I and science can't understand. He's so eminently knowable and eminently unfathomable.

Hijikata's shoulders do this little jump thing and then he straightens in his seat. His hands aren't covering his face anymore, but Gintoki's willing to bet that under the chabudai where no one can see, he's got his nails digging into his palms the way he always does whenever he's nervous.

...And now Gintoki's getting kinda nervous too. Are they actually in trouble? Wait, is there a no-dating clause somewhere in their Code or something? There wouldn't be, right? Hijikata wrote it, but he wouldn't go that far, right?

Headcanons about Gintoki, Otae, and Kondo's relationships!

(Spoilers, of course)

I think Gintoki actually considered Otae as a potential love interest, especially in the earlier episodes (~100). It felt like Sorachi originally planned for them to have something going on but somehow backpedaled along the way. Maybe he realized that Gintama didn't need canon ships lol or maybe he was saving him for Tsukuyo, who was then introduced in later arcs.

Either way, I think Gintoki can actually be vulnerable with Otae. More than any other women in the cast, tbh. They've had so many emotional scenes together. He's also grown very comfortable around her. Do questionable things for her. Trusts her to care for him when he's injured. He sleeps and hangs out at the dojo, too. Plus they have a common ground-- Shinpachi. They share the responsibility of being parental figures for him (or at least a proper older sibling that he can look up to and can protect him). Heck, he once even asked if he could grope her, if we wanna count that.

I think they already developed a sturdy base of friendship to work with for a romantic relationship to happen. Otose even revealed at some point that Otae has a little crush on Gin. I believe this. She was really there for him and she always showed up when it matters.

The ball was entirely on Gin's court, and he could've easily explored the possibilities if he wanted to, but he didn't.

I think he's just not that into her. Like, sure, she's a great prospect. Beautiful, hardworking, tough spirit. But that was it. In his head she had great potential, but I think Gin never really pondered about the idea of them. Maybe he was just too lazy for a relationship, or he considered Shinpachi and how awkward it might turn out (as he would most likely disagree but would allow it in the end), or maybe he found Otae to be "too much of a trouble" if he was to pursue her. I also think the 10 year age gap would throw him off. It could be many many things, mostly Gin's personal reasons, but my number one headcanon as to why he never took a step forward is because of Kondo.

It almost felt like a bro code or something. Gin clearly knows that if he shows anything remotely romantic towards Otae, she will FOLD faster than Kagura's umbrella. (Her behavior in the memory loss arc said a lot.) So Gin just ended up not doing anything because he knows that he wasn't even that sure if he wants to pursue her or not. He could even be afraid that he might hurt her feelings at some point (or get hurt himself) if we're going to be honest here. I don't even think he knows how to handle romantic relationships in the first place, let alone if he is ready for one.

And ultimately, Gin knows that Kondo is the one who truly loves her. Even the whole Shinsengumi already accepted her as their "mistress" (Chief's wife). Gin respected this, shrugged and decided to just forget about it.

(There's also Kyubei who is also madly in love with Otae. Imagine breaking the hearts of two fellow casts at the same time? Gin would never.)

It's not like he wanted her that bad anyway. Though she sure as hell crossed his mind once or twice, and he sure as hell fantasized what it could be like if he was to pursue her, at least a little bit.

PS. At the end of the Yagyuu arc, Gin asked Toshi about what he thinks is the real standing between Otae and Kondo. And Toshi said Otae is definitely in love with Kondo. I believe this, considering Toshi is the only one who canonically had any proper experience with romantic relationships, thus his read is probably the most credible.

PPS. In the later arcs, Otae is practically attached to the hip with Kyubei, and her "relationship" with Kondo has been infinitely teased and trolled throughout the series. Meanwhile Gintoki is pretty much cemented with Tsukuyo. Although they still didn't end up together.

So, my final conclusion is: Gintama doesn't need canon ships! :) Everyone loves everyone and that's all that matters.
