Girl vs. World

Back in February I got on the phone with Nhu Anh, the Director of Development and Communication for the nonprofit Girls For A Change. Girls For A Change (GFC) is a nationally operated organization dedicated to empowering young women to create social change. GFC provides a free after-school program that empowers girls living in the Bay Area’s low-income neighborhoods with the self-confidence, leadership skills, problem solving ability, and project management experience to be proactive, contributing members of our community. As a girl who had awkwardly stumbled through middle school and hid in the shadows of high school, I was eager to learn how this nonprofit was changing what it meant to be an adolescent girl in school and in life. It’s a Girl’s world Girls For A Change came into Nhu Anh’s life at the young age of 15 when she was involved in the GFC program available at her high school. She enjoyed it so much that she continued to stay involved and in touch. Eventually the job opened up and that’s where we find her today. Nhu Anh’s responsibilities at GFC include fundraising for the organization, organizing events, and creating communication materials to share with the GFC community.  But what’s her favorite part about her job? She most looks forward to organizing the Girl Gala, a fundraiser held annually by GFC to raise funds for the organization. It is a fun filled night that brings back girls and alumni, donors, board members, coaches and supporters. The most important thing about GFC according to Nhu Anh is that they provide resources and tools for girls to problem-solve, find their own voice, and realize their full potential. GFC targets low income communities, giving these girls an opportunity to stand up and stand out! We here at Goodjoe are all about standing up and standing out, so you go girls! Not only is GFC providing young women with these tools they may not have otherwise, it’s become so much more than just an afterschool program. Evaluations have shown that girls that have gone through the program have higher confidence and many head into their adult lives knowing that they have the power to change and improve their communities. Meet Nhu Anh In her downtime, Nhu Anh enjoys rock-climbing, snowboarding, and cardio kickboxing. Now this is a list that I envy terribly! When she’s not busy at work or outdoors, Nhu Anh likes reading, trying out new restaurants, and watching the show White Collar. She recently just finished the book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts” by Susan Cain that she highly recommends (I can’t wait to get started on this read; I’ll take book recommendations any day). One of her more memorable experiences with GFC was at 15, when she met and developed a very good relationship with her mentors. They remained in touch and her mentors have become her friends for 11 years and going. If you hadn’t realized before now how important an after school program and a mentor could be to a young girl, just take a look at this woman who made a fulfilling career out of it! Lastly, Nhu Anh’s advice to young girls today: always give 110% in everything you do, don’t doubt yourself too often, and keep good people in your life. Word. Get involved, folks What’s up next for this nonprofit? Girls For A Change is proud to enter their fourth year partnering with U by Kotex to empower girls to advance their vaginal wellness education and create social change in their communities through a program called Generation Know*. Generation Know* will be the first generation of girls with a real understanding of vaginal wellness , the first generation comfortable asking questions and gaining and spreading knowledge. GFC and U by Kotex will be embarking on a 10-city tour travelling throughout the US and Canada reaching out to high school girls.
