How are the trans in the Russian Federation going now? You may have questions about how a trans girl from Russia can make the transition. The answer is simple. Illegal. In the Russian Federation, it is forbidden to pass through the trans-crossing. Previously, the possibility of transgender transition was fixed by the USSR Circular back in 1926 (yes, I'm shocked). LGBT propaganda is also prohibited in the Russian Federation, and it includes the usual public recognition that you are queer or that queers are the norm. In fact, I heard a case where they came to a lesbian's apartment for a pride flag in their apartment, which they saw from the street through the window. My mom was doubtful, but after reading what was happening to me, she started looking for a doctor for me. I was diagnosed with ICD-10 transsexuality at the age of 13, and was told that I would be allowed to undergo hormone therapy after the age of 18. I cried and worried a lot, because very soon the changes in my body were going to come and I would turn into a monster (let's not be offended, boys, that's how I felt). For a whole year, the tests showed very terrible results about my condition, and the therapist understood that simple persuasions would not do without waiting. It's illegal, but then I started trans-transitioning at the age of 14. The hormones were supposed to be prescribed to the mother, but they were designed for me. Yes, it's all expensive and dangerous. My mother was looking for trans-positive doctors through social media, and every three months we have to travel to a big city in another area for several appointments with doctors to prescribe new hormones and check my health, see a psychologist, psychotherapist, and psychiatrist. It's terribly difficult and scary. But what could be scarier than being tortured in someone else's body? Yes, I'm tired of living like this, but it's the best thing that's happened in my life. I got a girlhood. I'll just try to go to South Korea or a European city, maybe the United States (but Donald Trump scares me, I'm sorry for you, sisters) when I can. I feel the danger of sitting on social networks for transgender people in Russian, as they can be attacked by all sorts of wild right-wingers (we recall the laws of the Russian Federation and it becomes a bomb). I've been following your Tumblr for a long time and I just have to thank you for the incredible content you bring about the show.

I agree with pretty much everything you think about the show, and I think you'd be an amazing EP to keep the show engaging and family-friendly (in the sense of keeping familiar faces around).

So I would like to ask you some questions:

The first is how you would set up the hosting duo and judging panel if you could do whatever you wanted;

The second is what you would do if you could choose 12 professionals for the next season, being realistic with the current situation;

The third question is about your ideal season, I know you like 12 or 13 couples and 10 or 11 weeks (preferring 10), so I would like to know how you would put together your ideal season (number of couples, number of weeks on air , how many couples would be eliminated per week and how many finalists would be in the final;

The fourth is if you think Barry is in Peta's Top 5 best partners, alongside Tommy and Donald;

Lastly, I know you consider the lack of brightness and "strength" to be a characteristic of Artem's partners and their choreography, and in seasons 30 and 31 you always thought that Melora and Heidi were overrated. I expected a lot from the first show and ended up being disappointed; I didn't know the second one. Artem has publicly said that his favorite partners are his wife Nikki, the legend Patti LaBelle (an icon and for me the biggest star to ever do the show) and Heidi, which really surprised me as I thought he would choose Lea Thompson or Nancy Kerrigan, or even Melora for being a little more performative.

So I'd like to know how you would rank Artem's partners: Lea, Patti, Nancy, Nikki, Melora, Heidi, and Charity.

I can really tell that you have been following my blog for quite some time just from this message alone. Thanks for staying with me and reading for so long. And I'm so glad that you think I'd be a good EP for the show. That is such a huge compliment! Now to answer your questions.

#1 I can see the hosting thing go a lot of different ways so let me start with the judges table. I think it should be a table of 4 and Julianne needs to be brought down from the Sky Box and put as the HEAD judge on that table. Derek, Bruno and CAI can all stay. Alfonso can stay as host. I would like to see someone like Kym, Marie Osmond, throw it back to Drew Lachey or bring back Samantha Harris (if she's willing).

#2 Pros- So I'll give 6 men, 6 women and 2 reserves (man and woman): Men: Brandon, Keo, Alan, Pasha, Ezra, Val (though I think he's ready to hang it up) Women: Daniella, Witney, Britt, Koko, Emma, Rylee Reserves: Louis, Peta (for those 13 and 14 couple casts) This is what I can realistically see happening.

#3 12-13 couples is ideal. I don't care which if we have a strong cast on all fronts. It should be 10 weeks and the last episode should be the week of the last Thursday in November at the latest (US Thanksgiving). No one would get eliminated in week 1. Week 2 is the first elim. With 12 couples, there doesn't need to be a double if you have a 4 couple finale, which I would be okay with. With 13, there does need to be one singular double. I would prefer to have that early on. Either the first or second elimination would be a double. No judges' save.

#4 I do think Barry is a top 5 Peta partner. It's him, Tommy, Donald, Nyle and either James or Brant (I'm leaning toward James).

#5 You're definitely right about my feelings for Artem and his partners. He's like Tony, but Tony was a much better teacher imo and at least produced a handful of memorable dances with his partners. I like this question though, it's forcing me to remember Artem's partners lol. Okay here we go from my favorite to least favorite:

What's the most wholesome thing Gladstone has ever done for Donald? ps: this blog gives me life

Gladstone can't cook. Sure, he could probably whip up something and have it taste moderately ok, but that was just his luck kicking in. It’s not like he knew what he was doing. 

‘Oatmeal’s so easy it’s practically cheating,’ he remembers Della saying a forgotten amount of years ago. And if Della could cook anything even remotely edible, then surely Gladstone would have no problems. It would be fine. He totally had this in the bag.

He looked up from his table of ingredients to the home phone hanging on the wall and had the fleeting thought of calling Gran. Not because he couldn’t do it or needed any help or anything, but just to be sure for assurance's sake. 

But no, he couldn’t call her even if he wanted to. Gran had taken Del and Feth up to the mountains for an overnight Woodchuck retreat and wouldn’t be within phone service till Sunday. 

Meaning Gladstone was on his own.

Gladstone rolled up his sleeves and gave a huff of determination. Like he thought, he’d be fine. Making dumb oatmeal was totally within his capabilities. Prepare yourself world, Gladstone was about to rewrite history and make the best freaking oatmeal ever!

He turned on the stovetop under a saucepan of water and brought it to a boil before adding in a cup of oats. He doesn’t really know what else you put into oatmeal besides, well, oats, but he had a distinct memory of Don’s oatmeal always tasting sweet and cinnamony, so he adds a spoonful of cinnamon and honey and keeps stirring. 

Somewhere in the back of his head, Gladstone thinks Don usually puts more stuff into his, making it taste creamy and sweet and delicious. But asking Don about it would seem like he lost this battle and Gladstone would not give Donald that satisfaction, so he pushes the thought out of his head and keeps stirring till the oats seemed soft enough.

Turning the stovetop off and letting the oats cool down a bit, Gladstone cuts up an orange and makes some honey lemon tea before putting everything on a tray and making his way upstairs.

He knocks on his cousins’ door twice, but doesn't wait for an answer as he opens it anyway and walks into the dark room. 

“Wakey wakey, eggs and.. well... ok so I didn’t make any bacon. Or eggs. But get up anyway, I have something better,” Gladstone sing songs as he balances the tray on his hip and uses his other hand to flip the light switch on.

The lump of blankets in Donald’s bed shifted as soon as Gladstone walked in the door, but it was another few seconds of jostled movement before a head poked out of the pile of quilts and glared at Gladstone.

“Go away,” Donald practically growled, and Gladstone had to forcibly stop himself from flinching at how scratchy and gravely Don’s voice was.

“No can do patient zero, I’m your self designated nurse for the next two days whether you like it or not,” Gladstone says, grabbing Della’s desk chair as he walked over to Don’s bed.

“Since when?” Donald croaks again, and buries his head under the blankets once more just as Gladstone took a seat beside him.

“Since you collapsed in the field a couple of hours ago with a 102-degree fever and nearly gave Gus and I a heart attack,” Gladstone comments as he sets the tray down on the bedside table beside them. “Gus is fine by the way, I sent him back to Cuthbert’s a little while ago after he helped carry you in. What have you been eating lately anyway? Took us nearly five minutes to haul you up here.”

“Shut up,” Donald groaned again before poking a one-eyed glare at Gladstone from under the blanket. “They couldn’t send a prettier and nicer nurse?”

“Excuse you, I’m the prettiest and nicest nurse in this joint. You’re lucky to have me, there’s a teddy bear down the hall that’s in dire need of a stitch job and here I am tending to your dumb ass instead,” Gladstone remarks as a heated joke, but quickly regrets it when Donald just breathes haggardly and stays a little too still under the blanket for Gladstone’s taste. “Anyway, can you sit up? You need to eat something. I made you some oatmeal.”

Donald didn’t reply back for a few quiet moments, and Gladstone almost thought he had gone back to sleep. But before Gladstone could shake his shoulder to check, Donald rolled over from his side and slowly sat up, the bed creaking the entire time as Donald rubbed his eyes to adjust them to the light. “You... you made oatmeal?”

Gladstone swallowed hard at the sight of his older cousin, and didn’t think it was possible to look so pale and so flushed at the same time. His cheeks and forehead were tinted a soft red, but his hands and arms looked clammy and washed out. There were dark bags like bruises under his eyes, a combination of stress and sleep deprivation that had overworked him to the point of getting a fever and Gladstone felt absolutely sick with how tired Don looked.

His eyes were a glazed over blue, unfocused, and hazy as he lazily made eye contact with Gladstone. “I... I didn’t know you knew how to make oatmeal. I didn’t know you knew how to make anything.”

“Please, oatmeal is so easy, it’s practically cheating,” Gladstone rolled his eyes and hoped he could get away with quoting Della without Donald noticing. 

It must have been a testament to how rotten Donald was feeling because he didn’t question it a second time and just nodded sluggishly, stifling a yawn as he balanced his head against his knee and closed his eyes.

“...Don’t need it.... I’m ok,” Donald muttered halfheartedly into his knee, like he was desperately trying to convince himself instead, and the worried knot in Gladstone’s stomach tightened into something angry and frustrated.

“Still dizzy? Need any more ibuprofen?” Gladstone asked, trying not to let the worried knot that had tied itself in his gut over the past few hours tighten, but Donald just shook his head softly.

“Don’t lie to your nurse, dude. You’re obviously not ok,” and Gladstone hated this side of Donald. The stupid stubborn side that refused to let anyone in and help him when he needed it. It reminded Gladstone too much of himself, which honestly made him hate it even more. “You can barely sit up and talk to me. Can you suck up your stupid pride for like, two seconds, and just tell me what you need?”

Donald gave Gladstone another one-eyed glare, but there was hardly any fight in his words when he mumbled a, “Really... I’m ok... Just tired.” And Gladstone was seriously starting to get pissed off now.

“If you say you’re ok one more time, I don’t care if I’m your nurse or not, I swear I’m gonna smack you,” Gladstone snapped, and was surprised when Donald let out a low and wheezy chuckle. 

“Are you... really trying to pick a fight with a sick guy right now?” Donald mused and Gladstone almost rolled his eyes so hard, he would have hurt himself if he wasn’t a pro at it.

“Oh, so NOW you’re sick. But when you’re hauling irrigation pipe around in 100-degree weather while being so dizzy you can barely walk straight and with a high enough fever to boil an egg, you’re all, ‘oh, don’t worry about me gran,’ and ‘I’m totally fine Della, go have fun.’ And by the time we figure out you’re not, it’s too late and you’re already half-dead in a creek somewhere,“ Gladstone complained, throwing his arms up in the air exhaustedly.

“I was in a field, not a creek.”

“My point is,” Gladstone rubbed his brow in annoyance, and tried to remember that he was indeed trying to take care of Donald, not pick a fight with him. But Gladstone was his cousin first, caretaker later, and it was high time someone spoke up to Donald about his self-sabotaging tendencies. “You always do this. You always push yourself too hard and never let any of us help you when you need it, and I’m getting sick and tired of having to worry all the time about you lying to us about whether you’re ok or not.” 

Gladstone crossed his arms over his chest tightly and let his words hang in the air, his eyes glued to Donalds in a fierce sort of way that practically dared Don to try and argue back with him.

But to Gladstone’s surprise, Don just knitted his brows tightly and shifted his gaze. Hugging his legs to his chest and resting his forehead on top of his knees, Donald muttered a soft “...I know... Sorry,” that caught Gladstone completely off guard.

And Gladstone had never seen Donald cry in all his 13 years, and Donald wasn’t crying now, but his eyes got an intense watery that made Gladstone’s heart turn ice cold and sink all the way to his feet. 

And maybe it was just that Donald was really sick and tired and wasn’t in the right headspace to put up a fight and defend himself against Gladstone, but still, Gladstone couldn’t help but feel the guilt of his earlier accusation tear through his angry exterior like a knife through butter, and Gladstone melted into something soft and forgiving and far less intimidating and hard-pressed.

He was still frustrated with Donald, but to be fair to his cousin, it wasn’t like Donald tried to be difficult like this on purpose.

Donald’s always tried to do things by himself, ever since they were little kids. He always tried to carry the world on his shoulders and be the singular pillar holding all his family up. When they all moved into Gran’s for the first time, Gran made a comment to Donald that he was the man of the house now, and she would be needing his help to take care of everyone. Gladstone knows Gran only meant it as a way to cheer Donald up, but Don took it all too seriously, and used it as an excuse to do things on his own.

It really wasn’t like Donald was too prideful to ask for help, like Gladstone. It was just that he didn’t know how or when it was ok too. And he’d much rather burn up completely at both ends before he ‘burdened’ his family with what he considered ‘his’ responsibilities. 

And it was frustrating cause in the same light, Gladstone didn’t know how to offer help without it seeming like he was looking or picking a fight.

“You don’t have to apologize, it’s just,” Gladstone sighed, and ran a tired hand through his hair before leaning forward and resting his elbows on the edge of Don’s bed, craning his neck so that he could make eye contact with Don from where he was leaning his head against his knee. “I don’t like doing this. I’m not good at doing this.”

“What... taking care of my ‘dumb ass’?” Donald muttered sarcastically. 

“Seeing you sick and being useless to help you,” Gladstone stated flatly, staring at Don’s eyes with a heated deadpan as they got wide and electric with surprise.

“Helping you is the easy part dude. Getting you to let me is what I’m not good at. You know it’s ok to take a break, right? I know I complain about doing chores and all, but it’s not like I won’t help pick up the slack if you need it.” And Donald's eyes were large and blue and glued to Gladstones as he continued, trying with every once of his luck to get Donald to understand his wishes. “You don’t always have to do everything yourself all the time. You’re allowed to take a step back and breathe once in a while. It’s not like everything will fall apart without you there to hold it together, ya know. We’re not so fragile that we’ll fall into ruin if you don’t run yourself into an early grave to fix everything yourself. You’re allowed to ask for help.”

Gladstone leaned forward and tapped Donald’s forehead a couple of times and gave him a wry smile. “So I don’t need you to apologize. I just need you to be ok. Like, really be ok. And to not try to take on the world by yourself. You’re not alone, dude. Stop acting like it.”

Donald didn’t retort with anything witty or spitfire back, which Gladstone half expected him to, but he nodded honestly and clearly, and gave Gladstone a wry smile of his own.

“Ok,” was all he said, and that was as good as gold for Gladstone.

“Ok, good!” Gladstone straightened up in his seat and reached over for the bowl of oatmeal on the nightstand. “It should be cool enough now for you to eat. I can’t promise it’s like, the best thing ever, but you need to eat something and I’m pretty sure this won’t make you feel any worse.

Donald took the bowl slowly, and raised an eyebrow of surprise in Gladstone’s general direction.

“I still can’t believe... you made me oatmeal.”

“What, like it’s hard?” Gladstone answered back, leaning forward on his elbows once again and looking at the bowl with a nervousness he didn’t quite know what to do with other than to not show it to Donald at ALL costs. “Just eat it before it gets cold, ya skeptic.”

Donald took an unhurried bite, and chewed for what seemed like a torturous forever to Gladstone, before breaking into a gentle smile.

“It’s good,” Don commented while he chewed, and smiled even bigger when Gladstone physically beamed on the spot.

“What, really? You mean it? I knew it wouldn’t be like, horrible, but it was my first time making it so I wasn’t sure and-,”

“Try it,” Donald interrupted, still smiling as he held out a spoonful towards Gladstone, who, in his defense, took it immediately in his excitement over his first real cooked dish. And didn’t even think twice about possibly getting Donald’s sick germs, (even though he never gets sick anyway.)

As soon as the spoon entered his mouth, Gladstone started coughing and gagging, and almost downed Donald’s entire cup of tea in one swig to try and wash the oatmeal down.

It wasn’t like it was horrible, it definitely was by anyone's standards edible. But it wasn’t good by any means either. Gladstone had definitely put too much cinnamon in it, and the honey was almost nonexistent, making it all together just taste way too bitter and chalky.

“UGH! You liar! You said it tasted good!” Gladstone barked, wiping his mouth with his sleeve and staring daggers into Donald as his cousin smiled innocently back. 

“I said it was good, not that it tasted good,” Donald supplied simply, taking his spoon back from where Gladstone had thrown it back onto the bed and taking another bite. “Not that is matters. I’m pretty sure this fever made me lose my sense of taste.”

“What’s the difference then?” Gladstone demanded, and Donald just continued to smile softly into his bowl, his soft blue eyes practically illuminated against the red of his cheeks.

“It’s warm,” Donald replied back plainly, not looking at Gladstone as he took another big bite out of it. “I like it.”

And Gladstone didn’t really understand what Donald meant by that, but a pull in his stomach told him it was a compliment, and he could feel his own cheeks get hot with pride. So he stood up abruptly and said something about getting Donald a glass of water as he walked toward the door, not wanting to show Donald how pleased he was by the praise. 

Even though the oatmeal wasn’t a huge success, Donald still liked it, which meant Gladstone won the battle in the end.

Once he had gotten a glass of cold water from the kitchen and a cold wash rag for Donald’s forehead, he made his way back up the stairs towards his cousin’s bedroom.

Gladstone had left Don’s bedroom door open when he left, but before he could announce his arrival, he heard Don’s quiet snoring. Donald had fallen back asleep, with half of his body uncovered by his blanket and with the lights still on. Gladstone shook his head and smiled, but when he walked over to put the glass of water down on Donald’s nightstand, he noticed the bowl of oatmeal completely empty against Donald's side. The spoon was still hanging out of his mouth. 

“Dummy,” Gladstone said with more affection then he’d ever let Donald hear while he was awake, and took the spoon out of his mouth with the utmost care. He put the empty bowl and spoon on the tray and recovered Donald with the blanket, making sure to tuck in any stray limbs. He brushed some of Donald's wild bed hair out of the way before placing the cold washcloth on his forehead. Donald sighed quietly at the contact, but otherwise made no show of waking up anytime soon. Gladstone noticed that his fever didn’t feel nearly as hot as it did earlier, and felt a sigh of his own escape his lips in relief.

Gladstone gathered the empty bowl and spoon on the tray, leaving all but a single slice of orange that he stole for himself on Donald's nightstand, and put Della’s desk chair by where he had found it. 

“Call me when you need me,” Gladstone said, and didn’t care that Donald was fast asleep and couldn’t hear what he had said when he turned off the light and closed the door.

🎃Inktober of 2022 - Day 17: 🍁Leaves

🇵🇷Me: Just in time to be posting this in the afternoon before nighttime, but also bringing back those Jellystone kids after last year’s Inktober in appearances. Though you know about these kids; trying on previous costumes, one of them being possessed, and having breakfast cereal with friends. This year however is showing what is like to jump into leaf piles for their enjoyment. That’s any kids and non-fictional kids would do while already in Autumn. Though some adults worked hard to rack into piles as a clean up, at least knowing its good for some kids wanted to jump into them. Anyways, while getting ready for this year Halloween in Jellystone is having Augie dressed as Parappa the Rapper, Shag dressed as Shaggy Rogers (coincidence that both characters had beginning names with “Shag” in it), and Yakky Doodle dressed as Donald Duck. However they still had plenty of time to do before going for trick-or-treating stuff.

🥜Brown: Mhm! Kinda reminds me that I used to enjoying leaf piles since I was little; especially while collecting acorns before winter comes. That animal instincts thing. Anyways, glad to know these three having fun together in Jellystone; even if they would be causing trouble a bit later on. Just saying though.

6. Scroogey really is good and ha your words in Last Crash of the Sunchaser can’t hurt me anymore (not really that episode breaks me every time he says “You are not family”)

I’m gonna make another post of some drawings later (maybe) that I did while waiting to be able to watch the finale. And maybe tomorrow I’ll do another part of this and just do it in groups. idk though it depends. 💖💖

I'm still processing the 'Solitude of the 4 Leaf Clover' comic and oh man. OH man. Spoilerish ahead.

1. I had mention of 'luck walks' in one story I have not finished yet. So its so cooooool that was in the comic. Ahhhhh.

2. I feel so betrayed Fethry was avoiding him and Ludwig didn't know he was gone for 4 months like JAYSUS.

3. Despite the Fethry betrayal that shit HURTED, my stories do expose Glad's luck has something behind it manipulating it so I could fit in that comic as hnmn that shady luck thing having an episode at that time.

4. I really was expecting Fethry ditched him cuz they were gonna have a surprise party for Glad's bday or planning for his bday but NOPE.

5. Fact this started on his Bday is all interesting cuz its his unlucky day that was supposedly cured but in my first story I even play with the idea of NOPE IT AINT and thats how the drama in my story arch starts so that's fair.

6. WHAT THE FUCK FETHRY. So disappoint. You gonna get less smooches from Poe in my stories for your behavior sir.

TALE OF TWO POES

These are just my headcanons for my 87/Comic Poe and my 2017 Poe. I’m trying to write this before the new ep comes because I wanna see how close my headcanons are to the real one. Ahhhhh.

So for my 87/Comic universe starts out with these basic things.

-Him and Magica are twins.

-Actually a pretty nice and chill guy

-Can’t actually use magic but really, really wants to. He has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to magical items and spells, he just can’t use or summon any magic himself. He learns how to work around this problem, though. Very cleverly. He even fooled Eldritch Academy for years. Ha. 

-Has been a raven for 10+ years which has affected his social skills a tad.

-Would do anything for his sister. ;-; Weh.

-Really not villainy like Magica has a redemption arch and he helps her with that (and sometimes his help wasn’t that helpful by accident,) but he himself is just chilling?

 

Really not as villainous as Magica; has a redemption arch, and helps her become a better person. Sometimes his advice/help doesn’t do much, but it’s the thought that counts.

-For being chill, he sure likes poking his nose in things and being a little troublemaker. Magica can tell Poe, “Hey, make sure Gladstone doesn’t do this thing,” and then when Gladstone does that very thing, Poe is half heartedly just “No. Don’t. Stop.” like that Willy Wonka meme. 

-Poe has a lot of “kid at heart” energy, while Magica is the more serious, adultier-adult one.

- I hint that he is trans. Comments like about him and his sister’s different personalities like “Hard to believe we’re from the same egg.” and “That old dress of mine looks better on you.” But not out right saying it.  Wouldn’t it be just his luck when he was turned into a crow he was turned into a male crow and when he was changed back he just happened to be changed back male and was like, “This is all going according to plan.”  Though out of all the villains I can see Merlock being a misgendering prick. Calling Poe She-lock and He-Witch. What an asshole. 

-Gladstone and Poe had become good friends even before Poe is reverted back to his original duck form.

-Poe is Minima’s dad, but there is some drama regarding the entire thing I hope to cover in a story I’m writing. (I’m really close to finishing that one.)

Animaniacs: King Yakko Review (Comission by BlahDiddy)

Hello my beautiful technicolor rainbow! It’s time for Animaniacs, and while there is no balonga in my slacks there is one last christmas review for my friend to finish up, and after two visits to Acme Lab for the spinoff we’re finishing up with a look at Animaniacs proper.  Suprisingly for a show that stands so easily on it’s own it’s existance is entirely thanks to another show: Tiny Toon Adventures, which had largely the same staff, including ep and co-creator stephen speilberg and Todd Ruegger, who was brought aboard from A Pup Named Scooby Doo. Since TIny Toon was a colossal hit with tons of awards and merch, including some very good video games I wish Warner would find a way to re-release, I mean.. come on if disney can rerelease the disney afternoon games (If...not..for..switch), and LIon King and Aladdin games (If somehow FOR switch), then Warner, which has it’s own game stuido no less, can put together a collection of the good Tiny Toons games when the new show comes out soon. 

Point is it was a mass sucess and Warner Bros likes money, so they had Speilberg try to get Rutger to come up with another show for the two of them to do, something with name value. Rutger found his inpsiration when seeing the iconic warner water tower and taking some platypus characters, came up with our heroes and the rest is history.. well okay he retooled them from plataups’ to early looney tunes and other toons style characters minus the racisim of say bosko the tall ink kid but still, the rest after that is history. And the rest of this review is after the cut

The show was, and KINDA still is, a variety show: taking a page from looney tunes, as well as tex avery’s other work, the crew decided rather than just focus on the warners, to instead create a whole cast with various ensembles to work with so we got Pinky and the Brain, The Goodfeathers, Rita and Runt,  the Hip HIppos, Katie Kaboom, Chicken Boo, and my personal faviorite Slappy Squirrel.. and the bane of my existance, Buttons and Mindy.. or rather Mindy’s Mom. The kid did nothing wrong.  So naturally the first thing Animaniacs related I cover.. is an episode entirely breaking from format for one 20 something minute Warners cartoon. I do intend to do more animanics stuff in the future, so i’ll hopefully get a chance to talk about everyone, I just feel unlike with say house of mouse most people reading this probably know who they all are, and I can save any deep dives for if I cover the characters specifically. Spoilers: there’s probably never going to be a buttons and mindy deep dive unless someone tourtues me by paying for it. 

So with that out of the way, we can dive into the episode.. which I won’t be covering in my usual recap it point by point because the writers have freely admitted that’s not what Animaniacs is about. While some of i’ts SEGMENTS are more story based like Pinky and the Brain, Goodfeathers and Rita and Runt, most are just based on simple set ups to reams and reams of gags. And I love it. I grew up with this stuff not just Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs but the classic Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and Droopy shorts. 

Their well timed, well executed feats of comedy and most have aged pretty well.. emphasis on MOST. I’m keenly aware why there are several gaps in the shorts for both Tom and Jerry and The Looney Tunes on HBO Max, including all of the Pepe LePew and Speedy Gonzalez shorts. Also all of Droopy is missing. 

My grumblin aside though, it is VERY NICE to have all the classic Warner and Tom and Jerry shorts at my fingertips and it was one of the biggest selling points of Max for me. Last year I gained an intrest in the old disney theatrical shorts, hence my various birthday specials, so I BADLY wanted to revisit the theatrical shorts I grew up with. And honestly.. Max is the best way to do that: their in crisp hd, in neat season collections (Though the Looney Tunes one is better sorted, tom and jerry’s seasons are just.. random smatterings of shorts across various eras), and most importantly EVERY SHORT they felt comfortable with putting up there is on there. Every. Single. One.  I make a big deal about this because Disney.. has only maybe 30-40 of their hundreds of shorts on there. Now lucky for me the vast majority are still on youtube and I get why some really arne’t suitable.. we probably don’t need the donald duck short where he prepares to shoot a penguin in the face or the Goofy short where his own reflection, the goofy equilvent of tyler durden I guess?, keeps saying “Hey Fat” to him. And yes BOTH of these actually happened. But.. there’s MANY shorts with no clear excuse why their absent like the triplets first apperance, gus’ only apperance, and one a friend told me about.. that time mickey built a robot to box a gorillia. Again not making this up, just wondering why you can’t restore the rest of these for plus. They’ve ADDED shorts ocasionally, but it still dosen’t make a whole lot of sense to just.. not have them all up there. and to not put them in some sorta collection for easier consumption but hey it’s Disney. They either full ass things or half ass it. There is no middle ground.  Point is Warner.. actually cares about their heritage in shorts and honors it and thus has everything avaliable in the best quality, so tha’ts nice.

My point after that detour is I really love this kind of humor, and now as an adult I can see the effort the timing, pacing and character chemistry these shorts had takes. And Rugger and co.. they got it. They got it down perfect. And this episode is a great show of that and just how they barely updated this format for the 90′s. But as I said it’s more about the jokes and basic setup, our heroes are slotted into x scenario and just left to run wild. It’s been the basic seutp for looney tunes, tom and jerry and all the gag based greats, and it works perfectly here. Sure there’s some setting and continuity with the warner lot, scratch n sniff, ralph, plotz and in the reboot Rita, but it’s mostly just our heroes go up against “X asshole” and it just works. 

And that’s.. entirley what this episode is. The short is an homage to the graucho marx film Duck Soup, which given the warners were based on the marx brothers that isn’t a huge suprise, a film like brian’s song I have not seen, but genuinely want to. The basic setup is the same: An underqualified womanizer, though since htis is Yakko it dosen’t get past hitting on his chancelor, played by hello nurse, constantly, which is still.. ewwwww... but clearly not the same thing, becomes king of a small nation and ends up at war with another country. There were spies and other stuff in the original short but that was left out to streamline things.  But this homage stands on it’s own fine: The basic plot is this: Yakko, due to being a distant relative and the last one alive, becomes king of the small happy and very musical, as the wonderful opening number shows, country of Anvilania, which makes anvils and why yes there is one MASSIVE anvil gag as a result at the end. Yakko says he’ll try his best and geninely tries to with the shenanigans you’d expect, including Dot not gettnig Polka Dot’s are a thing and instead taknig any mention of it as a sign to polka, Yakko again hitting on his colleague and wanting ot get a new anthem because the current one by “Perry Coma’ puts people to sleep. Honeslty that gag didn’t do it for me: Partly because I genuinely know next to nothing about Como and he’s far past my generation.. and because despite this, SCTV did a MUCH better Perry Como gag over a decade before this episode that while still left me baffled as to why anyone cared about mocking him, was 80 times funnier and felt far less like you needed to know who he was to be funny. 

That being said it’s one of only three running gags, and jokes period that didn’t land for me. The other ones being the hello nurse bits, because it’s aged really badly to have Yakko harass one of his employees and his age is hte only thing that keeps it from scuttling the episode as he’s just 13 or 14. Maybe 15. 

So SO glad I now have that on hand whenever i need it. The other being the “Your highness” joke as it just.. dosen’t make much sense and isn’t very funny. But that’s it: a refrence i specfically don’t get and I doubt most of you will, and if you do fine we all have our frames of refrences, a joke that’s dated very poorly, and one that just.. didn’t land. And even then the Perry Coma thing’s third use to knock out the opposing army DID work for me as did the VERY clever joke of “Sire” “Maybe later”, so even the weaker bits still had some legs.  But getting back to what little plot there is the king of the rival country, upon hearing this, assumes he can easily intimidate a child into giving him the throne and goes to a royal reception. Instead, as you’d expect, the Warners mistake him for a party clown, show him no respect and fail to take his delcration of war seriously, and while in a REALLY great gag, and the reason i’m not doing a strict summary is 90% of the review would be me saying something to that effect, Yakkos’ call to action for his troops ends up having them all run off in fear, the Warners take out the army as noted above and then in one of the most GLORIOUS climaxes in the series history...

 In which the Warners give the bad guy “all the anvils” as he requested. I sadly coulnd’t find a clip of it but seek it out if you got hulu, my words can’t do it justice as they hit him with anvil after anvil in increasingly clever and insane ways till the guy finally gives up and it .. is glorious.  Other highlights not already mentioned include: The opening song, the bad guy dictator from the other nation not being able to hear because of his helmet and his attendee having to lift it, leading to Yakko taking off his helmet just to end the “what’ running gag, Yakko’s bit explaning his distant relation and more.  So yeah not a ton to say on this one. It’s a very good, very funny episode but also very typical of a warner cartoon in structure, just stretched over 22 or so minutes. As I said with few exceptions the jokes work, the anmation is crisp as always, and the climax is one of the series best. A crisp, quick watch and a nice quick review after a week of with some really tough ones behind me and ahead of me and a month of rather large ones a few weeks out. So yeah if you like animaniacs, even ifyou’ve seen this one worth a watch, if you have any more animaniacs you’d like me to take a look at feel free to comment or comission and until the next rainbow..

Ranking all the Fantasia Segments

I have seen both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 way too many times in the last month (they have become my background noise while studying). Now for fun I’m making a numbered list of my favourites.

This is 100% subjective.

Since Tumblr only allows 10 photos, I chose to have gifs for the top 10.

15. Toccata and Fugue in D minor By Bach

This is the first segment we watch in Fantasia (‘40). I will admit I’m not a fan of Bach and most of Baroque music. It might be my modern ears or it might be my lack of taste (probably the latter). So pretty colours and Bach is not for me.

14. Symphony No. 6 by Beethoven

This is the most skippable for me, and I actually skip it most of the time. I feel like I should love it. I love Greek Mythology. I like Beethoven. Together? Meh. Honestly, I think this segment is too long and it drags. It loses my attention. I forgot about the totally racist scene because I stop paying attention at that point or I have already skipped it. Also, this one also feel the most Silly Symphonie to me and it feels out of place because of it.

This was almost number 15 but Bacchus’ donkey is named Jacchus which automatically moves it up a spot.

13. Intermission/Meet the Soundtrack

This is cute and fun. But there’s just so high I can put this.

12. Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven

Yes, I am putting this higher then the introduction for the first Fantasia. I like Beethoven more than Bach. This piece is iconic. ICONIC.

Pretty colours and Beethoven>Pretty colours and Bach.

11. Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major by Shostakovich

I’m a little surprised how low this ended up but I like every other segment more. There is nothing really wrong with this segment, other than the dated CGI, but there’s a certain charm to it. It’s placed here more because I don’t have a lot to say about it. It’s a retelling of the Steadfast Tin Soldier, it’s nice.

10. Pines of Rome by Respighi

So, this segment is freaking adorable.

Does this remind anyone else of the Pedro the Plane from Saludos Amigos or Little Toot from Melody Time?

9. The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky

I feel similar about this one as I do about Pines of Rome. It beats it out purely on animation. It’s so pretty! Look at that leaf freezing over! I’m glad this was made before The Nutcracker became popular in the west because it gave us a more unique segment where the music spoke and not the actually plot of the ballet.

That being said:

8. The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Dukas

Why am I putting something so iconic so low? It’s my list and my personal tastes. And I honestly feel meh on this piece of music. But the rest of it good. And like I said iconic. Even though I’m a little miffed that this is in both Fantasias, I felt like it was there to pad out the movie because they didn’t have enough time to make another segment.

I like to think of this segment as a foil to Symphony No. 6. I said Symphony reminds me of a Silly Symphonies and which makes it feels out of place in Fantasia. However, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice which stars Mickey Mouse, does not feel like a Mickey Mouse Cartoon. This segment feels like it belongs in this movie.

7. The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns

Is it a dumb little short? Yes. Was the introduction from James Earl Jones one of the cringiest? Yes. Do I love it? Yes.

6. The Firebird by Stravinsky

This is so freaking beautiful! The music. Beautiful. The Animation. Beautiful. The Emotions I feel during this segment. Beautiful. The hopeful story! Beautiful!

5. The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky

Both Stravinsky segments made it back to back. And both Stravinsky segments are epic. But this one has dinosaurs. And this segment fascinates me on the evolution 😉 of the cultural depictions of dinosaurs. And where else can you see a stegosaurus fight a T-rex? This segment is not scientifically accurate (it’s wasn’t scientifically accurate at the time, the T-Rex with three fingers) but it wasn’t trying to be. It wanted to be an artistic version of the history of life until the KT extinction, and it succeed.

Plus I love how they explain the evolution of tetrapods going on land as “Some fishes more ambitious than the rest.” It gives me joy for some reason.

Another addition, I find it funny the one called the Rites of Spring is not the Stravinsky piece that includes the spirit of spring.

4. Pomp and Circumstance Marches by Elgar

Donald Duck 😍 and like the Nutcracker Suite, this unique take on a popular piece of music (even though the Nutcracker wasn’t popular as the time that segment was created).

It’s fun and epic.

3. Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria by Mussorgsky and Schubert

There is a good reason that this tops most people’s lists. It starts out pretty awesome with demons and Chernabog (while like Hades he gets devilfied) is awesome. But then, the sun rises and Ave Maria starts and I get chills down my spine. Hope and goodness wins! Deems Taylor is right, they do perfectly condict but fits so perfectly together.

2. Dance of the Hours by Ponchielli

This is my favourite piece of music in both Fantasias. I freaking love this piece of music. I was going to put this lower than Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria but this is the segment I go back and back again. It’s a fun segment.

1. Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin

This is my list and I’m putting this at number 1. I freaking love this segment. The music great. The animation great. It tells multiple stories all we stastifying resolutions. The colour plate is great. The concept is great. It had everything! But not only is it great, it’s different from everything else.

Here’s hoping this decade will introduce a new Fantasia movie.
