Why representation matters

Adequate and accurate representation helps everyone. According to a 2011 study, for the LGBTQ+ community, “beyond making participants [of the study] feel comforted, GLB role models in the media made participants feel as though it was acceptable to be GLB and helped participants view their identity more positively” (Gomillion and Giuliano 330-354). GLB in this case is simply an acronym for gay, lesbian, and bisexual, but this result can be applied to the entire spectrum of the queer community. However, according to a Gallup poll from 2012, only 3.4% of Americans are LGBTQ+. In the last 5 years, that number appears to have skyrocketed to 12%, according to GLAAD’s Accelerating Acceptance report for 2017. It is highly likely that the representation of LGBTQ+ identities on screen has helped to spread awareness of these sexualities and gender identities. Furthermore, it is also likely that representation of the LGBTQ+ community as people that are not just their LGBTQ+ title has had a hand in the increasing support for the LGBTQ+ community. Though it may seem obvious, a study in 2000 asked the question of how representation affects straight and cisgender people, and found that “the participants who viewed an anti-gay video reported more negative attitudes than did the participants who viewed a pro-gay video” (Levina, Waldo and Fitzgerald 738-758). Furthermore, supporting the LGBTQ+ community, or being an ally, has been shown to have many positives, including: “increased knowledge and awareness, upholding values of justice, beneficial individual relationships, community belonging, educating others, being a role model, using social privilege, and, speaking out and taking a stand” (Rostosky et al. 331-338). Queer and non-queer viewers alike would benefit from having more accurate representation for the LGBTQ+ community.
