Drabble: Glimpse into the Past -Hungry

“Daddy, I’m hungry…” “I’m still hungry, papa…”

“Still hungry…”

Miles has been hearing young Lisa chirp all day, like a baby bird greeting its parent with an open mouth to be fed. Hungry, hungry, hungry. She’s always had a ravenous appetite ever since she was born, but now at five years old it was growing just as fast as she was. It would only take an hour or two for her to tug on his shirt asking for more food or complain that her between meal snacks weren’t enough, and she would look so miserable that he would give in and feed her more each time. 

But why? Why was she so starved despite constantly eating? The question repeated in Miles’ mind as he flipped through one of the several monster parenting books he had spread out on the kitchen table late into the night, his anxieties on the matter not letting him sleep. She wasn’t gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, if anything he was struggling to maintain a proper weight for her age, and it’s not like she was asking him solely for sweets and junk food. She wanted meals. He shut the book in front of him after it yielded no helpful information before resting his elbows on the table to rub his eyes. He was so tired that the words were starting to blur together, and the dim candle light wasn’t helping, but his mind was urging him to keep searching for an answer. Any little shred of information to help her, he wanted to find it right away. As he sat with his head in his hands to rest his eyes for a few moments he wondered if her mother would’ve known anything about this. If they would’ve been able to explain away all his worries so instead of scouring books he would’ve been in bed. If they would be able to reassure him that he was doing a good job raising her.

“Daddy?” Miles had been so deep in his thoughts that he hadn’t heard the little pitter patter of feet coming down the hall and he lifted his head to see Lisa standing in the doorway. Her little fists clutched her nightgown anxiously as she stared at him with big round eyes, concerned that she found him here rather than in his room. He smiled down at her to try to ease her worries and held out his arms to bid her to come closer.

“Hungry again, my darling?” Lisa hesitantly nodded as he lifted her onto his lap, his uneasiness over her weight only growing worse as he felt how light she was, “Very well, I’ll fix you up something to eat. But it’s straight to bed right after, don’t try to use this as an excuse to stay up.” Lisa giggled as he playfully pinched her nose before he set her down. He gathered his books off the table and set them aside.

Lisa greedily slurped up the leftover soup from dinner and worked on devouring a small basket of bread rolls as Miles sat beside her, watching her eat as if she’s never had a decent meal in her life. It hurt his heart, and it only made him continue to wonder if he really was providing enough for her. Lisa gradually slowed down until she sat staring into the bowl, and for a moment Miles thought she was about to doze off at the table, until she spoke up so softly he probably wouldn’t have heard her if it wasn’t for his heightened senses.

“I’m sorry, papa,” she muttered, refusing to look up at him, “I eat all the food you make, so you’re always cooking. I don’t know why I want to eat so many times, but I promise I like everything you make me. Please don’t be mad at me…”

Miles sat dumbfounded at the sudden apology. Gods, he forgets how perceptive she is, she must’ve seen more than just finding him in the dark to make her feel bad enough to want to say something. He had to take a moment to swallow down a lump forming in his throat to avoid scaring her more before gently tilting her head up to look at him. Those wide eyes were brimming with tears, and that only made it harder to hold back his own.

“Elizabeth, there is nothing for you to be sorry for, I could never be angry with you for simply asking for a meal. Please, don’t ever be afraid to ask me for anything you may need. I’m your father, it’s my job to protect you and keep you happy, not the other way around. Do you understand?” she nodded, though she didn’t quite look him in the eyes as she did, “I mean it. Don’t worry about me, I’m alright.”

Lisa didn’t quite believe him, but if he was telling her that he wasn’t angry then it helped make her feel a little better. Enough to wipe her tears on her sleeve and take another large bite out of a bread roll before speaking with her mouth full, “Erkay, baba.”

Miles sighed, manners still needed to be worked on, but he’ll let it slide this time. By the time she had her fill Lisa really was dozing off at the table now, and Miles gently wiped soup and crumbs off her face before lifting her and taking her back to bed. After tucking her in again he shut her bedroom door and let out a heavy sigh. Maybe it was time for him to go to bed too.

To my dear heart,

We’ve just made landfall in Snezhnaya. It’s a damn cold place—I always think I’ve gotten used to the cold every time I go back, but I keep eating my words. I guess the Tsaritsa’s love isn’t so warm, huh? It makes me miss those summer mornings where I’d wake up in your arms. A little sticky, a little sweaty, but warm. The sunrise never could outdo your smile.

I miss you. And it’s got me thinking about the ways to describe how I love you.

I know, I know. I’m no poet. I’m a pirate captain! But… a mutual friend of ours keeps sending me to fetch all these literature books, so I figured I’d flip through a few pages on the journey back. Might as well make use of the time, right? Indulge me, please, sweetheart, just this once.

I thought, first, that I love you the way the ocean loves the moon. You move me, coaxing me into rhythm. You are there, always—for my highs and for my lows, for when I’m strong and when I’m weak. But the moon shines so far in the sky, and I hold you too close to my heart to bear the distance.

I thought, next, that I might love you like an anchor loves a ship. You hold me steady on stormy nights, when the waves crash harsh and high. And I carry you with me wherever I go. But you are more than just an anchor.

So I thought instead, that perhaps I love you the way a navigator loves the north star. With faith and certainty in its presence, a guiding light in the darkest of nights. I know you will shine forever in my night sky, but I think I would miss you too much during the day.

So I’ve thought about it lot, but in the end, sweetheart, I think I’ll only know how to love you as myself. I’ll come and I’ll go but my love for you will always stay right there in your hands. I’ll love you like a sailor; and you’ll always be my safest harbor. Today, tomorrow, and all the tomorrows after that.

you don't bother me at all, this is what my ask box is for!!! i love hearing from people and will take any opportunity i can to ramble about my silly ideas<3 i call it ✨️brain nourishment✨️

i have sooo many scenarios for reveals or partial reveals. strap in because i'm going to paint you some pictures~ (post under the cut because holy moly i am a first degree yapper)

1. Shen Qingqiu

shen yuan is sent to deliver something to the qing jing peak lord, but when he arrives, the peak lord isn't home—his head disciple is. this is part of the dating sim aspect where shen qingqiu is the tsundere who lets shen yuan in and makes him tea while he's waiting for the peak lord to return, it's all very cliche and shen yuan is just waiting for it to be over.

however, while shen qingqiu is out of the room, a sudden message from the system tells him to hide. shen yuan hides in the closet, and the thing comes into the room. later, shen qingqiu finds shen yuan hiding, and takes it surprisingly seriously when shen yuan says something got into the house. shen qingqiu pulls his sword, keeps his talismans ready, and does a quick sweep of the house and yard before coming back in. shen yuan looks a bit embarrassed, but shen qingqiu tells him that only idiots think cang qiong is impenetrable, and that whatever came inside isn't here anymore now.

i like the angle with shen qingqiu because it creates this really nice sort of depth where shen qingqiu fears no one will believe him, but he does believe others, especially about things like this. and shen yuan is confronted with the reality that despite thinking the "scum villain" is only awful, shen qingqiu does have some genuine sides and will actually protect him if needed (even if he does "comfort" shen yuan by calling him stupid).

2. Mu Qingfang

this is a somewhat similar scenario, but in this one, mu qingfang is actually involved in the mission. shen yuan is tasked with making sure "it" won't discover the two of them, so he pulls mu qingfang along to a bed, pulling the curtains closed and sitting on top of the bed so their feet don't stick out beneath the curtain. shen yuan tells mu qingfang to be very quiet, watching in terror as a shadow creeps along the outside of the curtain, its breathing harsh and rattling.

when the creature is gone, shen yuan tries to talk about it to mu qingfang, but it turns out that mu qingfang never saw it. mu qingfang does believe that shen yuan saw something and tries to ask about it, but it feels more like a "i believe you think you saw something, tell me more" kind of talk they have in psychiatric hospitals than a cultivator taking him seriously on a threat. the system tries to chime in with a few dialogue options, but that only makes it worse and shen yuan leaves feeling like he's crazy and with a -10 relationship points on mu qingfang.

i feel with mu qingfang there's a very delicate line between him believing shen yuan because they do live in a world of sleep demons and shapeshifters, and him having dealt with so many cases of paranoia and hallucinations and such that his first action was to check shen yuan's meridians on a potential deviation.

3. Shang Qinghua (airplane)

now this puppy can fit some interesting plot scenarios!! one that i really like is where shen yuan is helping shang qinghua with some of his paperwork (gotta farm that +10 r-points), and he gets a message from the system that they're no longer alone.

[ mission: occupied! ]

objective: do not disturb.

hint: it is already in the room

shen yuan freezes. shang qinghua keeps mumbling about ink stones and illegible calligraphy. shen yuan calls his name, quietly, and tells him not to move. shang qinghua's eyes go wide for a second, and he easily (too easily) agrees.

depending on how creepy i want to make it, one of the options is a companion option where shen yuan is tasked with making sure shang qinghua doesn't look behind the folding screen in the corner of the room.

[ begin countdown ]

objective: companion must not look behind the screen.

shen yuan is pale and his gaze flicks to the screen a few times. shang qinghua notices and asks what's wrong. shen yuan swallows and then proposes they go take a walk outside. shang qinghua is confused at first, and wants to argue, but shen yuan says something about danger and shang qinghua goes really quiet, then agrees to go outside. shen yuan sees how easily shang qinghua agrees and takes a gamble, telling him not to look behind the screen. shang qinghua goes white as a sheet at that, and never takes his eyes off the floor as he practically runs to the door.

at this point they don't know the other's status as a transmigrator yet, but this is the part where shen yuan starts to suspect some things.

as for shang qinghua's part: he knows the player has an extremely dangerous entity attached to them, which is absolutely able of game-over'ing anyone who makes the wrong choice in this universe. when shen yuan tells him not to look, he doesn't look.

4. Liu Qingge (& Mu Qingfang)

this is just an angsty whumpy one with a few endings, i just really like the premise. shen yuan is at a quiet wing on qian cao peak when he gets a mission from the system.

[ mission objective: run ]

"it's right behind you"

shen yuan immediately drops everything in his hands and bolts, sprinting down the corridors without once looking back. he runs through the hallway, the courtyards, his heart hammering in his chest. then, suddenly, he's caught mid-step by a set of arms, stopping him: it's liu qingge.

liu qingge asks him what's wrong, what is chasing him? but shen yuan is terrified and out of breath and can barely string a sentence together as he gestures and stammers, "it's—there, right there, i swear—i swear, didn't you see it—?"

[ system message ]

warning: proximity < 03 meters

shen yuan panics and tries to get free, knowing that he has to run before it detects him or catches him or whatever the system envisions it to do, but liu qingge isn't letting him go and it gets into a half-hearted struggle, and because they're on qian cao of course mu qingfang gets involved, but even two head disciples can't calm him down.

it's a little further along into the story, at a point where everyone kind of knows that shen yuan is "paranoid" and prone to "anxious delusions", and they treat him a bit more careful in a way that feels condescending. they're trying to calm him down but shen yuan works himself into a qi deviation with how stressed he is, saying "it" is going go get him while fighting the head disciples to get away, and that doesn't help his case at all.

eventually, while liu qingge restrains him, mu qingfang is forced to sedate shen yuan to keep him from hurting himself, and he doesn't get far enough away to exceed the mission threshold, thus failing the mission.

[ event status ]

mission failed: you were caught

i have a few different paths for this one:

forced reset — the creature got him, he lost, he has to do the mission over, starting again in the qian cao west wing

injury reveal — as shen yuan is sedated, some kind of invisible creature does actual harm to him (depending on what the thing will be; maybe a large scratch on his leg? damage to his cultivation?), which does reveal to liu qingge and mu qingfang that something was really chasing him

punishment protocol — shen yuan loses points or has to accept a punishment from the system for losing a mission.

nothing? — shen yuan wakes up in the healing room with the message still above his head, but the system never explains to him what the consequence for failing is. something happened, but he doesn't know what.

this is also possibly a turning point for shen yuan in the story where he starts trying to fix it himself or get outsider help (which could mean the introduction of a certain demon and his nephew!), because he feels like no one believes him and he's in more danger because of it.

(this could also lead to a point where shen yuan starts to believe he really is imagining it, and ignores a mission on purpose to "prove" to himself it's not real)

i won't implement all of these options, but i did want to share them because i like them all a LOT and i love to share! i'm still tweaking them, but the essence of these will probably make an appearance in the fic!

💋 MetaDede Week 2024 Day 2: First Kiss 💋
