I'm not even saying that streamers have to be good at games! Bad gameplay can be very entertaining, so you don't have to be good to be worth watching.

It's specifically when there's an unwillingness to try to understand the game you're playing that I get mad.

Like there's a difference between "fuck I died but I understand what I did wrong and that makes sense" and "fuck I died I'm not even gonna check if this death makes sense I'm just going to assume it doesn't because fuck Sonic Adventure 2 in particular"

When I say I love shitty RPG Maker games, I don't just mean low-rent graphics or goofy sound design. I mean jank. Give me a player character where half of your abilities don't do what they say they do, and the other half don't work at all. Give me impossibly snarled dialogue trees that loop back on themselves and sprawl haphazardly across three different revisions of the game's story, none of which correspond to the version that was actually published. Give me side quests that can't be accessed without glitches or save file editing because somebody fucked up the event triggers. Give me an ostensibly nonlinear world that breaks hilariously the moment you do anything in an order the developer didn't anticipate. And most importantly, give me a game where all of this is true not due to lack of care, but because the scope of the developer's ambitions vastly exceeded their ability. Like, yeah, most of the time I want my games to, you know, work, but there's something in playing through the wreckage of an artistic effort doomed by its own hubris that no amount of too-clever deconstructionist posturing can replicate.

A thought about de-aging and Tron Legacy

It's just about universally agreed that the de-aging on Jeff Bridges as Clu in Tron Legacy looked jank as hell. But I think a single special effect gag could justify it all.

Have a single bit of his face, let's say his cheek, visibly glitch out. A vertex out of place. For a moment, he looks deliberately even jankier. He notices the glitch, pauses whatever he's saying, picks at it like it's some sort of scab, and removes it from his cheek. As he continues his speech, the "wound" on his cheek "heals" and he looks like he did when the shot began.

He still looks like a badly de-aged Jeff Bridges, but now there's an explicit, in-universe reason why the effect looks off.

The animation in wf4 feels a little like paper dolls but in a different way than you might think.

The way they move around makes it feel like the very people in the story have been weathered by the passage of time for a vhs tape. Like they're made of a digital material that's deteriorating along with the tapes.

Like they're very bodies are developing glitches and losing fidelity. I know it's also the style but the way they also move similarly to the animatronics reminds me that practically everyone in this is dead, and either possessing one of the robots, or somewhere else, or gone.

It's jarring and off, just like everything else. They're being janked around by their own demise that we can only interact with after the fact.

And I love that Felix isn't a William type.

He's not evil. He's someone with a terrible drinking problem. He wasn't good to his wife. He lied to his friend. He buried his friends children and lied about both the deaths and his problem with alcohol.

But he isn't malicious or evil. He's a man who went through an awful accident as a result of his own bad decisions. He feels awful about it. He's haunted by it. And I think that makes it scarier. This series doesn't seem to be a bunch of planned events by some mad man or a big plot.

Molly and Edd aren't like Cassidy. They aren't vengeful ghosts or special. They weren't killed to further anything. They're elementary schoolers who got in a car accident because their dads friend was drunk driving. They want to find their sister. They want to help people.

Bon is such a mystery to me. I have no idea where that is going.

The things that scared me the most were the voice acting and the build up to Susan, and some of the faces.

there's a certain magic to sonic 06 that you can't really find in other games, at least not very easily. it feels like a game that's somehow forbidden, that you shouldn't be playing it, when the physics get a little weird and the menus aren't all that smooth and upgrades are implemented and spaced out so oddly. you play the game and feel like you should be reporting your experience to someone, give them feedback on the things that are jank and weird so they can change things around and make the game better. but there's no one to report to, it's just you and your tv and your console running the game

it's not a game that is finished and you know it, but you bought it and it came in a case with an instruction manual that talks about a shield powerup you can't find anywhere in the game. the little things pile up into bigger things, some that frustrate you, others that amuse you, and even so there's a core of a compelling game in your hands. you watch the cgi cutscene with beautifully rendered fire and detailed models, before you're spat back into a hub world that feels barren and looks desaturated. the soundtrack makes its way into one of your playlists and reminds you of how long it took you to figure out the boarding physics in white acropolis. time muds the memories and makes you forget how awful radical train is two thirds of the time; you can only remember the relief when you finally made it through

games like sonic 06 don't get released anymore when greater care is put into the development process and post-release patches and dlc exist to address the leftover bugs and glitches and unwanted jank. it's a time capsule just as much as it's a proof of concept, a beta version you weren't supposed to ever hold in your hands. it is broken and it is unfinished and it is so, so beautiful

literally made a hater post just to talk about stuff in the sonic series that I dont like ❤️ if you don't like this post then fuck you block and/or blow me. this is disorganized as fuck btw and i dont care

sonic frontiers was the best mainline sonic game in over a decade but thats really not saying much

i think tangle is kinda boring and whispangle is kinda boring by proxy. whispers cool tho

surge is the best rival sonic character since blaze and the only thing dragging her down is that sonic in the idw comics kinda sucks as a character

its great that we are getting more female characters in idw and the games but quite a lot of them are kinda boring and we still need more female villains

metal sonic is basically nothing but a jobber in idw rn and its really depressing

idw please treat the babylon rogues better, theyre goofy characters with serious storylines just like basically every other sonic character, stop making them NOTHING but a joke

lanolin is an interesting character, yall just cant handle women who are even SLIGHTLY rude to a fan favorite character

the worst part of idw is that its tied to game canon because they cant shake up the status quo too much or have character arcs for most of the main characters

rouge is ABSOLUTELY a sexualized character and always has been. learn to like a character despite the faults in how they are portrayed or shut up about it

sally was the best canon romantic partner for sonic and you cant change my mind

the second worst part of idw is the titular character himself

i dislike surg/amy because of the age difference andalso the fact that everyone wants to disregard surges character to have her be redeemed

if sega is going to keep teasing son/amy then they should just stop dancing around it and make them canon already, make the shippers happy and get the drawn out agony over with for the rest of us. also age amy up for the love of allthat is holy

also, sega should stop ship teasing ships they have no intention of making canon in general, its shitty and edges into queerbaiting when done with gay ships

idw art is overall much much MUCH better than any other sonic comic and its not even a contest

there are a lot of things i disagree with about the current state and direction of this franchise but we are in a much better place than we were even just two years ago and we should be glad for all this success

the worst parts of archie are the most atrocious things that this franchise has ever put out, in art, storytelling, basic morality, etc.

the games have never ever been properly translated from japanese into english and that is just an objective fact. but also dont shit on people for only having interest in the english version, you have to go WAY out of your way to get a good translation and that's on the franchise, not the fans

this franchise's "canon" has been fucked since the original classic games, trying to fix it in the sense that you can somehow make every little detail perfect is a lost cause. just pick and choose what you like

ryan drummond was the best english va, but jason got the better scripts. roger is getting better and most of the work hes been given is just. bad. so i dont feel okay judging his work. but he is my least favorite

and I need everyone to go play this game and flail with me. It definitely has some jank (whoa audio and occasionally glitches that force a quit/restart to progress), but it's also so damn STAR TREK, has excellent TNG callbacks, and killer voice talent (Debra Wilson & Ali Hillis, beloveds).
