I was gonna give Poor Things 10/10. But going to Lisbon and having a borzoi on the boat sequence elevated the film to a 12/10 for me now

"i want copia to transition" is like, kind of reductive, because what i really WANT is for copia to transition and also get a daytime variety show with sketch comedy and cooking segments and travel segments and musical numbers and special guests. fumbling note cards and spilling cups of fake coffee and wearing sensible jacket-and-skirt ensembles. not any better at performing for a camera but having a great time nonetheless.

@emiline-northeto replied to the Robin Hood Summer post:
I would be interested in a film-watching(s) and discussion, however that might work, if others are
Let it not be said that I asked for more than the flimsiest of excuses! Here’s my idea: from July 1-7, interested parties can, on their own schedules, watch or rewatch The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938.) I make this choice for several reasons, viz:
it’s a perfect film
it’s my favorite
it’s an iconic and influential Robin Hood adaptation
apparently some people have never seen it?????
it is full of JOY
“In these cynical days when swashbucklers cannot be presented without an ironic subtext, this great 1938 film exists in an eternal summer of bravery and romance.“ (Roger Ebert)
So yes! Let’s all watch it! Rave, rant, reblog things, and I will supply breathless commentary on request.

Propaganda
Machiko Kyō (Rashomon, Floating Weeds, Older Brother Younger Sister)— Considered an early sex symbol in Japanese cinema. Also just an ethereal beauty who can also go feral/unhinged in a glorious way.
Judy Garland (Meet Me In St. Louis, A Star is Born, Summer Stock)— Judy is the GOAT when it comes to classic movie musicals. The voice of an angel who deserved so much better than she got. She can sing she can dance she can act she's a triple threat. Though she had a turbulent personal life (her treatment as a child star by the studio system makes me mad as hell like Louis b Mayer fight me ((she was made to believe that she was physically unattractive by the constant criticism of film executives who made her feel ugly and who manipulated her onscreen appearance by capping her teeth and using discs in her nose to change its shape and Mayer called her "my little hunchback" like imagine hearing that as a child and not having damage)) she always goddamn delivered on screen and in any performance she gave. She began in vaudeville performing with her sisters and was signed to MGM at 13. Starting out in supporting parts especially paired with mickey Rooney in a bunch of films (she's the best part tbh) she eventually transferred to the lead role. She is best known for her starring role in movie musicals like the iconic Wizard of Oz (somewhere over the rainbow still hits hard and is ranked the top film song of all time), meet me in St. Louis (Judy singing have your self a merry little Christmas brings tears to the eyes she is that powerful), the Harvey girls (she looks like a technicolor dream and sings a catchy af song about trains), Easter parade ( dancing and singing with Fred Astaire), for me and my gal, the pirate, and summer stock ( with pal Gene Kelly who she helped when he was starting out and he helped her when she was struggling). But she also does non- singing just as well like the clock ( her first movie where she sings no songs and is an underrated ww2 era romance), her Oscar nominated a star is born ( like the man that got away she put her whole soul in that and I have beef with the fact she lost to grace kelly ((whom I love but like still not even her best work)), and judgement at Nuremberg (a courtroom drama about the nazi war criminal trials). Outside of film she made concert appearances to record-breaking audiences, released 8 studio albums, and had her own Emmy-nominated tv series. She was the youngest (39) and first female recipient of the Cecil B DeMille award for lifetime achievement in the film industry. Girl was a lifelong democrat and was a financial and moral supporter of many causes including the civil rights movement (she was at the March on Washington and held a press conference to protest the 16th street Baptist church bombings). She was a friend of the Kennedy family and would call jfk weekly often ending the calls by singing the first few lines of somewhere over the rainbow (she thought of them as Gemini twins). She was a member of the committee for the first amendment which was formed in response to the HUAC investigations. Though she died far too young and tragically she remains an icon for her work and her life. As a girl who didn't feel like i was as pretty as everyone else I have always felt a connection to Judy and I just really love her.
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Judy's voice alone qualifies her for at least top ten hottest HOT VINTAGE MOVIE WOMEN. She was a truly incredible swing singer, with a stunning voice on top of her technique. Her short dark hair looked incredible in just about any style. Have I mentioned her swagger? I can’t do it justice with words. She had swagger. She was funny as hell, and clever too. Incredibly charming and cool. I adore her.

Her eyes, her voice have bewitched me

I mean how can you beat the one and only Judy? She's beautiful, her smile is contagious, the way she sings with her whole body. You can't help but love her.

Beautiful woman, love her singing voice. And she can do everything between happy or silly and angry or heartbroken

Academy Award Winners for Best Cinematography: 2005 — Robert Richardson, ASC The Aviator (2004) Directed by Martin Scorsese Aspect Ratio: 2.39 : 1
“Prior to my involvement, Marty designed a color timeline that influenced every creative department. He wanted the progression from a two-color palette to a three-strip palette to approximate the technological advances of the film industry at that time, but more importantly, he felt it would mirror the characters’ emotional evolution. The first act, which covers Hughes’s early career in Hollywood, was supposed to have Technicolor’s two-color look. With the second act, which begins after Hughes sets a speed record flying across the continental United States [in 1937] and goes with Katharine Hepburn to Connecticut, we transition to that vibrant, three-strip look that most of us associate with the glorious Technicolor years. Then, when Hughes almost dies crashing the XF-11, we were going to cut into a more contemporary look without either Technicolor process applied.”  — Robert Richardson for American Cinematographer, January 2005

WIP Wednesday 📝
Tagged by @theotherbuckley @thewolvesof1998 @diazsdimples @loserdiaz @rainbow-nerdss @wildlife4life @malewifediaz @spotsandsocks @exhuastedpigeon @puppyboybuckley @evanbegins @hippolotamus @jesuisici33 and @devirnis. Thank you my wonderful friends for tagging me 😘 (make sure you check out all their snippets!)
Rival Firefighters is the wip that’s been getting most of my writing beans lately so have some more from it. I’m currently working in Ch 7 which is a Buck POV chapter so here’s a lil snippet …
When Buck was finally able to leave the confides of the apartment, he went straight to Eddie’s and flopped down on the couch he’d started referring to as his (at least in his head), crutches discarded by the coffee table. Chris and Eddie found him there when they’d gotten home from school, fast asleep as a nature documentary playing on the tv.
He’d made them dinner that night (insisted on it), hobbling around the kitchen and enjoying being back in a place he considered home. He loved his apartment, loved that it was the first real space he’d ever had that felt like his. But there was something about the Diaz house that warmed him in a way that his apartment just didn’t. After a long shift at work, it was the Diaz house he wanted to go back to, their couch he wanted to flop face down onto and pass out on.
He knows that the something has more to do with the people who live there than the actual house and furnishings themselves. Eddie and Chris are Buck’s people, the ones who can brighten his day simply by appearing in it for even just a minute. Buck likes to think his life was good before; awesome job, great friends, his sister back in his life, but ever since he and Eddie became partners and Buck was introduced to the coolest seven year old in the world, he feels like his life has gone from black and white to technicolor.
The Diaz’s came and splashed vibrant hues of yellows and oranges onto the walls of Buck’s life, painting it in sunshine that warms Buck to his very soul. He hopes that he’ll get to hold onto them forever, that he means even just a fraction to them as they do to him. That when Eddie finds the right romantic partner, the Diaz’s will still want him around.
He tries not to think about it too much, the thought of Eddie with someone else. It makes his heart clench and his stomach swoop in a very unpleasant way. He knows he has a crush on his best friend but he’d thought that by shoving everything into a box in his mind and locking it up would solve it. Feelings locked away, crush gone. Done.

The way they fight is AMAZING!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I take back my recent comments that choking is having a moment in cdramas nowadays. This is from years ago and here is choking in glorious technicolor.
Tumblr media
It's interesting that he's letting her keep the kid, which is not even a question for a modern person but for someone in his position and his personality just speaks about how obsessed he is. (Interesting question - would they had a greater chance for happiness if she gave birth to a daughter? I don't think so tbh. Ultimately, the deal breaker was he was always a monster intent on ruling in blood and she could not live complicit. But maybe it would have taken longer to reach the breaking point.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crazy alert!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most jaw dropping things in this entire jaw dropping sequence is how his choking transforms into his trying to caress her. Good Lord.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dude, dude, DUDEEEE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then he shoves her on the bed and climbs on top. Young man, even if she fancied you, this is not the style of foreplay appealing to majority of women. Not that he had to care, as king. But like - show some finesse.
Tumblr media
I started laughing. Dude, you blackmailed her with the life of her boyfriend and have been threatening and manhandling her ever since she got here. LIKE!!! The stunning lack of self-awareness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way she never has any give!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, she has SUCH balls but also this is so a ship dynamic I go wild for in fiction (in rl, pls pls call the cops and run.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bwahahahaha. Tbh, I wasn't sure even that would kill his desire for...ahem...conquest.
Tumblr media
When you have to say "at least he's not a rapist of the woman he loves," you know you've not only hit rock bottom in terms of decency and sanity of your ML, but you are tunneling through to magma.
And then he leaves her, only to go to some other random concubine's room and shove her on the bed with no preliminaries, to work off the lust he's worked up but left unsatisfied with our FL:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even if this wasn't Qin Shi Huang but some fictional monarch, censors would never let this drama air now, and if they kept him being QSH, I think they'd rather literally die than release it. Yet this was aired no problem in 2017, on TV no less. What a difference (and not a good one), less than a decade makes.

Can you write something about soulmates?
Aunt Maya showed me her old photographs one night, decades of her life divided in stacks. She had a black bob in the 80s and wore long pants dripping with youth. I was so pretty then. She sighed. Aunt Maya is 52 now and lives with 3 cats- Bob, Leah and Metatron. But she was 25 once, and had a blonde shag in the 90s. She rode a motorcycle. Oh, who's this?, I ask. The picture shows a man, young and tall, on a black harley, my aunt wrapped around him, a brunette this time.
"He's Connor, an old friend."
I wait for her to continue. She doesn't, so we move to the next page. I see the same man with her, in bars and beaches, at home and in a garage. They look good together, I think. And I look up at her, her eyes lost somewhere else, some other time. I flip the page again, and he's there again, in group pictures, alone with my aunt, with her best friends, lan and Sherly. A drop falls on the album and I see her face again, sketched with wrinkles and smile lines, a tear rolling down her left cheek.
I know what he is to her and what he means, a part of her past buried in albums becoming a part of her life once again.
"Look at him, he looks so happy here", she points to a picture of him in a cabin. He's holding her hand and they're giggling, her hair longer with blue tips.
"When I look at him, I'm 19 again, and he becomes everything, my past and my future. I always wondered what he'd look like when he was old. I wondered if he thought the same for me, I still wonder sometimes."
"Do you still love him?" I know the answer.
She's lost again, in old restaurants that have shut down, forests that don't exist anymore, in moments she has guarded as memories, refusing to forget them. Slowly, she pulls herself back to me.
"I did, once. I don't know, memory is a faulty thing and the past moves in circles. I don't think about some things for months, only to obsess over them for a week. Also, I don't think I know him now. I did once, and I loved him, loved who he was and who he could be. But I know he's a different person now, I am too."
We stay quiet for a while.
Quietly, she begins to flip the pages again. We silently watch her life, their life together. Seasons go by in minutes, hair changing from the brightest yellows to purple streaks, a glorious technicolor of Aunt Maya. I realise a while later that Connor stops showing up in her photographs. New men and women take his place, stay for a while and then disappear. She looks older now, and her friends change, people moving in and out of her life. The photographs change too, become more clear, vibrant, sharper. At one point, her hair stops changing, a tuft of grey emerging at the roots, getting longer and finally taking over. She still rides motorcycles and goes out with her friends, gets Metatron first- an entire album to his name. Bob and Leah follow.
At a point, the pictures stop. Mobile phones take over the empty pages in the albums. We sit still for a while.
"Was he your soulmate?"
She stared at me for a while, then smiled.
"That's just a word." She laughs, a hearty, full chuckle, her eyes shining with life. "Can I live without him? Yes, I already have. Did I love him the most? That's absurd, there's no scale for loving. Also, I think I love Metatron the most." Another chuckle.
"I think we loved each other with the kind of love that lasts lifetimes. But I've loved many people with different kinds of love that would last lifetimes. We had our time and we lived a beautiful life. Is that enough to become a soulmate? I don't know.
"I guess that's it. You love someone in the moment, and you make more of them and then you hope those moments will last forever, knowing that they won't. So you gather those moments in your memory, hold them close and cherish them and make new ones.
"I think that's what soulmates are, moments of your life that you want to keep forever."
-Ritika Jyala, excerpt from The Flesh I Burned
