nah since marvel is trending again I’m going to say it again louder for the people in back — canon steve rogers would never have chosen an “idyllic 1950s white pickett fence life” because the only place that man belonged was a picket LINE. the whole point of his character was that his work was never done. there was always going to be another oppressor, another bully, another person who takes advantage of the underprivileged for him to stand up to. from the moment he gained consciousness he, a chronically ill son of a working class mother living below the poverty line, used his voice and his body to protect & fight for what he believed in. I’m not sure there was ever a time pre-super soldier serum where he didn’t have a black eye. he could put the shield down all he wanted but he could never retire from being steve rogers — someone who never once turned a blind eye, who never once wanted a “reward” for his work, who never once abandoned his friends. this isn’t up for debate. this is almost a century of comic book & film/animated precedent. he may have been a man out of time, but in his words “it’s tempting to want to live in the past. it’s familiar, it’s comfortable. but it’s where fossils come from”

If FATWS hadn't fucked up Sharon's character so royally, Ruth's role in Brave New World could have easily been filled by Sharon, and it wouldn't have made one bit of difference.

So far the consensus about Captain America: Brave New World is that Sam deserves a better story than Hulk’s sloppy seconds. But this review from EW about Harrison Ford’s Ross made me see red:

“From the first moments, it’s clear this is a different Thaddeus Ross. Not in the obvious literal sense, but by virtue of the fact that the opening minutes of the film reintroduce us to the notion of his daughter, Betty (Liv Tyler), and his deep desire to reconnect with her and right his wrongs. What a world we live in that in a movie full of super soldiers, Celestial Islands, and gamma rays, the most unbelievable part is a U.S. president with empathy, a sense of responsibility for his actions, and a capacity for change.”

Oh, it gets better:

“Thaddeus Ross is not a supervillain; he’s not even a particularly morally bankrupt politician. He’s just a man trying to do his best for his daughter and the country he loves.”

This was EXACTLY what I was afraid of when they cast Harrison Ford as Ross. This is the same crap FATWS did with Zemo. Nobody asked for a Ross redemption arc, nobody WANTED one! And yet the MCU never fails to give its male villains all depth and nuance, yet meanwhile, Sharon has her character destroyed and vilified and dumped without a second thought.

I love Harrison Ford, but once again, fuck Feige and the MCU.

What they did to Sharon (and Steve for that matter) exemplifies this more than anything.

I think there's a lot of factors that has led to the overall downfall of the mcu, from consumer fatigue to the shoddy cgi ununionized vfx workers were forced to grind out to incohesive plotlines, but the one that I think alienated the fans the most was the writing -- specifically by people who genuinely disliked the source material characters and stories they were writing about. how many times can you watch yet another one of your favorites be ruined? do something so wildly out of character it hurts? there was a shift post infinity war. to put fan servicing ahead of good writing. to stuff everything with cameos. make gif & memeable scenes. to treat characters like playing dolls -- where nothing felt like them except their face. sad tbh

That's exactly what happened. Whoever takes over the MCU if Feige steps down, please do better by the women characters.

I heard that CA:TWS originally had Sharon Carter in a much larger role, but the Russo brothers wanted Black Widow to be in the movie, so they replaced Sharon with Natasha. Was their imagination really so poor they couldn't fathom two female characters being in major roles for the film?
