hello! i am a creative who is trying to learn more about guns so i can write them in an informed way, but a lot of the sources i'm finding are like. kinda uncomfortable, in the sense that they're very conservative and kind of reactionary about defending from "Invaders" or whatever. i was wondering if you happen to know of like, youtube channels or blogs (other than this one ofc) that are informative about firearms but also, not, like. sponsored by US military recruitment agencies? sorry for the trouble

Hiya! I totally understand the discomfort. I do have a couple of recommendations to give, but I do also want to share my experiences, too.

Looking back, I'd estimate that about 70% of my arms research has always been with the caveat of having to navigate those kinds of conservative elements, unfortunately. (And another 20% was on sources that weren't very open about it, but I can't recommend for one reason or another after hearing about them from other places) I know it's really unfair, and I wish I had better sources to recommend for deeper knowledge, but to get the best understanding, it may be required to navigate those waters oneself, and focus on separating the educational elements from the ideological bullshit.

And from experience, if you're gonna look at IMFDB (Internet Movie Firearms Database, an extremely well-documented and exhaustive wiki on gun identification with regards to the media they show up in, including video games and anime), I would recommend running Firefox with the latest version of AdBlocker to get rid of the more problematic ads.

Outside of that, I've got a handful of decent recommendations for you to check out still.

Ahoy has some great videos that cover a number of historic firearms, though there is a slight focus on their relation to video games.

Though not a standard educational channel per se, Anton Hand is the creator of Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades, a VR game that's a sandbox with advanced firearms simulations, where the only organic creatures are cartoonishly nonhuman sausage creatures, which is an intentional design choice to avoid the game being an Active Shooter Simulator. While his channel is primarily dedicated to updates to the game, whenever he goes about adding in new weapons, historical firearms, attachments, functionalities, etc., he does go into the history of those features fairly often.

I asked a friend of mine, and he recommended InRangeTV, who is a leftist gun blogger, so there's a fitting recommendation, I suppose! I haven't seen this guy before but I already like his vibes quite a bit.

Okay, what's the sniper rifle grenade launcher?

It's my beloved Denel NTW-20 (chambered in 20x82mm MG151).

And yeah. You read that right. 20 millimeter ammunition. For reference, your go-to anti-materiel round, .50 BMG, is a 12.7mm diameter.

The default configuration of 20x82mm MG151 ammunition (afaik) is High Explosive (HE).

Technically speaking this is classed more as an anti-materiel rifle than a sniper rifle, but this is, generally speaking, a rifle intended for extreme distance use (it got the sixth longest recorded sniper kill at 2,125m!) that fires what are essentially small grenades.

So this may just be me being totally naive about how D&D handles vampires but...does Astarion still have, like, bodily functions? Because unless it's mentioned in some banter I've yet to find in-game it never seems to get mentioned and all my Tavs have questions they're too afraid to ask.

Weird question, but you're the only Erik expert I know, and I can't be asked to go through my comics, so what kind of shoes does he wear when he's in civilian clothes?

Because I feel like he's too posh for trainers and not posh enough for captoes.

if you talkin Civilian Clothes as in Everyday Going Out clothes he's pretty 'formal' and neat about his style i'm pretty sure: think polos, dress shirts, turtlenecks, and the like, so it probably would be fitting he wears dress shoes (if not at least sleek leather ankle boots) more times than not actually

it just. the set up to the scene is sooooo romantic. you have lloyd being absolutely devastated at the thought he's not going to see any of his loved ones ever again and that he's been dropped back into his terrible life, to the place he admitted he'd rather die than go back to,,, and then someone knocks at the door and when he opens it this is the sight that greets him:

his best friend, the person he's closest to, the one he's spent years with, the one he promised a peaceful life at his side, the one he wanted to grow old with, the one he sacrificed everything for, the one he effectively gave his life to save, the one he thought he'd never see again, standing at his door, having crossed literal dimensional barriers to get to him, a soft and teary smile on his face as he tells him "i missed you"

like. c'mon.

i'm all for platonic interpretations, i'm aroace, i love me a good best friendship as much as the next guy, but,,,, isn't this,,, like,,, really fucking romantic??? extremely so??? am i??? reading too much into it?? because it feels really, really romantic to me.

and like you say. where do you go from there. what response could lloyd give that doesn't involve throwing himself at javier and clinging to him with all of his strength. what conversation could these two have that doesn't involve them seeing how truly devoted they are to each other. what resolution does their arc together have that isn't them spending the rest of their lives together, at each other's side, like they so dearly wanted to.

but. alas. that wasn't the story bk moon wanted to tell. and that's very much his right. i just think that if he didn't want me to assume there's no in-character and narratively satisfying version of that conversation that doesn't end with them kissing he should've at least tried to give us something. and not completely skipped it lol

but that's just my opinion too :]

I was wondering where the questions for the spicy patreon livestream were going to be taken from so I had a search through the discord and it turns out Jay's put them together, chosen from questions suggested on discord that she asked for like last month (and I guess maybe from the qna channel). I hope they still have time to take some from maybe the live chat or something as well? randomly saw this picture a few days ago on tumblr and it's funny so i googled "gun identification tumblr" and found you pwease hewp ;w;

I shit you not, that's an ADS Amphibious Rifle (based on the A-91 bullpup assault rifle, chambered in 5.45x39mm, with integrated 40mm grenade launcher).

The picture is actually of the exhibit made for the rifle at a 2016 defense services exhibition event to "demonstrate" the amphibious capabilities of the platform (meaning it can operate and shoot underwater).
