rn im reading this manga that inspired me to pick up new hobbies which i’ve been kind of unmotivated to do lately so i’m super attached to this series now lmfao

the mc hitori has social anxiety & finds herself through playing electric guitar which my god it’s super refreshing to see a character with struggles i relate to in media bc every character is super extroverted in most series tbh, but anyway she finds a way to do what makes her happy and shine.. i wanna do that too!! i really recommend this manga it’s not that long n it’s funny. if u struggle with something similar or ur just an introvert it’s definitely something you might enjoy.

the pink hair characters struggling with social anxiety is such a funny coincidental trope bc now shes up there as one of my fav characters of all time w saiki k just bc i relate to them sm & they’re written to be super cool. def give it a read! it also has been animated to a 12 episode series if you prefer watching

Chapter 2 TTWT

(tw: gore, body horror)

Sarah doesn’t exist. 

You know this already. Sarah, Seraphim, they’re close enough to the same name, right? Its not too difficult to get used to, but Seraphim still finds themselves struggling to respond to it, even when Alexandra yells out to them. 

“Sarah! Sarah, Get over here,” Seraphim hesitates, before walking over to where Alexandra and the other two, Dan and Amy. “Since Mr.Too Good For Fun chickened out, we were hoping you’d be able to join in.” 

Seraphim had quickly found themselves pulled into whatever mischief that the small group of drunk teens were planning. Of course Seraphim had never tried to get the teens to leave the building, they could care less about that. They were just curious as to what the group was planning, and was quick to join. 

“Its hide and seek,” Amy said, giggling as her can of beer swished around in her hand. She leaned against Dan, grabbing onto his football jacket. Another lie that Seraphim had sprinkled into “Sarah’s” story, just to make themself seem like an unlikely suspect. 

Dan let out an overdramatic sigh, “can you believe everyone thought she was the goody two shoes?” he asked, motioning over to amy, “Alex thought she was gonna chicken out with Clay.” 

Alex rolls her eyes in typical goth  fashion, but theres something endearing in them, “ignore them,” she says to Seraphim with a smile, instead grabbing their hand, “they cry wolf about the smallest things, so I wouldn’t be to worried,” she teased, causing Amy to let out a cry. 

“Do not!” “Do to!”

“Hide and seek on halloween?” Seraphim found themselves asking Alexandra, who smiled down at them. 

“Hitori Kakurenbo technically. Have you heard of it?” 

“Hm.. no I don’t believe I have,” Seraphim lied, not for the first time tonight, and most certainly not for the last. They simply figured they’d let this goth girl, no older than 20, have her fun. She had clearly been the one to come up with the idea to play such a thing after all. 

Pretending to listen was easy for Seraphim. Nod along, repeat what she says back to her, and seem surprised at what she says. Simple and easy enough. 

And so, this is how it starts. 

“Dan, do you have the scissors?” Alexandra asks, holding her hand out toward him. He hands them over to her without much complaint. 

“Weren’t we supposed to use a needle or something?” Dan asks, to which Alexandra shrugs, “if it kills us, it kills us,” she said as she stared at the stuffed animal— a monkey. 

Amy blurts out, “We should name it Sir-Kills-A-Lot” no one bats an eye at this, so Seraphim doesn’t either, mimicking the groups vibe. 

“Sir-Kills-A-Lot, Kinda a mouthful no? Lets call it Slut for short.” 

Amy shrugs, “sounds good to me.” 

“Slut? Thats not even an acronym,” Alexandra huffs, pulling out a small bag of rice as she guts the doll’s inside, getting rid of the stuffing.

“Yes it is?” Amy says, “S, K— oh, nevermind its not.” 

“Well, lets call it ‘Slut’ to make it less scary,” Dan says, glaring at the small monkey plush as it got filled with rice. “Why does it have to be a chimpanzee?” 

Amy groans, “I thought Clay was supposed to be the one using long words, not you,” she huffed. 

“Still! You could have chosen something with less…” Dan waves his arms around, “limbs.” 

“Limbs?” Alexandra swears she could hear the marbles clashing with the cobweb in Dan’s brain, “do you want us to chop them off or something?”

“...actually its fine as is,” Dan shivers.

They each put a fingernail in the doll, before going off to their respective hiding places. Seraphim hid under a table near the doll, which Dan thought was stupid, but Seraphim couldnt care less. The table had a blanket, and if this were a shitty horror movie, they’d be the last to die. 

They just wanted to see if it’d work. 

They sat there, every so often looking at the storage closet that the doll was in, peering out, waiting to see if the door would open or not. 

It didn’t. 

After thirty minutes, they left the staff break room, impatient. They went towards the lobby, but found… they were lost. They knew this building like the back of their hand, they couldn’t be lost. They turned around, going back the way they came, left, right, forward… a wall. 

They turned around again. They were in the hallway towards the bathrooms. 

“I must’ve gotten myself lost,” ‘Sarah’ says outloud to ‘herself’, though Seraphim knows better. 

They slowly walked in, looking around the room, ah, they thought, I see whats happening. They walked into the bathroom, letting out a quiet hum. There was a small tap, tap, tap, from the bathroom before BAM, and a SLAM and— 

Oh…ew. They let out a small knock on one of the bathroom stalls, “everything alright, Amy?” they ask, and they could hear her let out a squeak. 

“Ye— yes! Um, just, period things,” she laughs nervously, and Seraphim shivers with slight disgust. 

“...I’ll leave you to it,” they said, making their way out of the bathroom. Clearly, this trap wasnt for them. They leave, and find that the layout was back to normal. They quickly walk away, towards the lobby. 

They paused at the sound of someone… choking. They wonder if its coming from the bathroom, but… its not. Its coming from infront of them. They take a peak, looking to see what it is. There they see…

A monster. Not a demon, they said to themself, Those don’t exist. It was a monster, though they were inclined to call it human, a man more specifically. Tall, in a clean black suit. It’s hair was brown, long and it appeared to have bangs. Its hair was feminine, though its stature was clearly masculine. Its back was towards them, and its hands, pitch black, wrapped around  Alexandria’s throat. Seraphim could hear how she struggled for air, there on the ground. 

Crash, the monster went, when she had grabbed a nearby vase and smashed it in its face. It seemed to knock it out. 

“Fuck!” she gasped, and scrambled towards the open window. Good survival skills, Seraphim mused. 

Slam! The window shut on her hand, and they could hear the cracking of bones. She cried out, pulling her hand away, “Fuck!” 

“Alexandra,” Seraphim whispered to get her attention, “this way! Quick!” 

She stared at them, and they did their best to look scared, forcing their hand to shake slightly. They ran off, and she followed them, through this maze of an office. The place kept changing, when it would’ve only taken one left and a right to get to the fire exit, it instead took twelve. 

Seraphim wasn’t going to the exit, though its best if the monster didnt know that. “What was that thing?” ‘Sarah’ asks, making their voice sound horrified. 

“I think— i think we messed up the ritual?” Alexandra blurts out, her voice raspy as she stares around, “thats— thats not even summoned from the doll? I dont think? Fuck fuck fuck.”

Finally, seraphim thinks to themself as they find the door they were not supposed to stumble apon, there it is. 

“Turn!” ‘Sarah’ says, making a sharp turn opening the door to the laundry room. They drag Alexandra in, panting, eyes tearing up in ‘fear’ as they lock the door up, knowing that they weren’t going to escape. 

Thats what the cops could find out. That it was ‘fear’, but they wont find the ball of yarn in Seraphim’s chest. The way it tightens, adrenaline pumping through their viens and this, this is what they wanted. They couldnt stop the laugh that bubbled up in their chest. 

“Sorry— sorry, just,” Seraphim trys to fall back in their role, but Alexandra lets out a laugh as well— though hers was one of relif. “Do you— salt?” they ask Alexandra, and it seems even she knows that they werent going to escape. 

The two sit down next to each other, and surround themselves in a circle of salt, backs pressed against each other.

“...what’d it look like? The monsters face?” Seraphim asks, because Sarah wouldnt be curious about such a thing. Alexandra went quiet.

“A doll.” 

“A doll?” 

“Yes— no, i dont know. Not a doll, but a mask. Hand painted, it—” she hesitated, “it spoke to me.” 

“Did it?” seraphim asked, their voice quieter. 

Her voice almost breaks, “yes.” 

Seraphim wants to ask more, though quickly remembers— Sarah wouldn’t push. Sarah, their alias, wouldnt push, and that was the only thing stopping them from pressuring her. They turn and put an arm around her, hearing her start to cry. “It– it chased me around, and i had hid but— there was– a note, blood near the bathroom walls– written in blood—” Alexandra lets out a sob, “It said i wasn’t playing right. I wasnt playing its game right.” 

“The game?” they ask, “hide and seek you mean?” 

“No, no its game.” her head rests on Seraphims shoulder, and they held her closer, because thats what they were expected to do. 

Knock knock. The monster knocks on the now open door, one hand behind its back. Alexandras voice gets caught in her throat. Seraphim can see the monsters mask now. As well as the wig— its so clearly a wig, its a surprise it hasnt budge out of place yet. It stared them down. Not a word spoken. Alexandra screamed, but didnt move, staying in the salt circle. Seraphim, however, pretended to get so startled, and darted away, making themself seem trapped. 

They wanted to get caught. 

And yet its focus remained on Alexandra. It reached towards her, the girl frozen in fear, and tucked her hair behind her ear. It grabbed what looked like a business card, and calmly placed it in her hand. 

“What do you want?” she sobbed out, not even looking at the card, letting it fall out of her hand. 

Not a word was spoken by the monster as it snaps her neck. It doesn’t even seem to be aware of Seraphim. It stabs Alexandra, and seraphim hides their confusion, instead pretending to stifle their sobs in fear, pressing themself in a corner as they blink, trying to summon tears. Yet they can’t help but watch. Listening to every sound, hearing as it peals away its body, in awe. They cant remember the last time they were able to witness something so gruesom so close. 

Ah. Another lie spoken to the cops. Alexandra never said she was scared, she wasn’t alive before she was mutilated. 

Then, it attention shifts, and Seraphim is truely startled this time. They almost forgotten they could be seen. 

It tilts its head, and brings its hands towards its face, as if telling them to smile. 

A sharp pain is what Seraphim was supposed to hear as the knife hits their head, stright towards their skull. Its a dizzying feeling, and they allow it to hit them. Their eyes go shut. They know they wouldnt be able to stop themselves from watching the monster as it carved into them. 

Theres a hand on their face, almost cradling it, before pulling the knife out of their skull. It doesnt take long for it to get plunged in their own chest once more, and they feel warm blood pool around their own body, the knife roughly hitting bone, going all the way down their body, ripping the clothing of their shirt, down to the fat. 

It takes more than once to get through all the layers of skin, and once the monster is all the way through— 

It pauses. 

And Seraphim knows what its looking at. 

It pushes the shirt away from their chest, and its confusion only grows. 

Its hand reaches into the still open wound, looking for intestines, a heart, organs, anything. Its confused, maybe even scared. But Seraphim doesnt move. Playing dead. 

Theres nothing. It steps back, dropping its knife, probably staring at Seraphim. All these years of blending into the background, changing their identity over and over, they can’t help but enjoy the attention of this monster on them, staring at them.

LIST: 10 of My Favorite Dark Music Videos

What you probably couldn't tell from my ongoing Christina Aguilera project is that I love dark shit. No, you probably won't find me at the local goth club nights (in suburban Florida, we don't have those), or crying to Sisters of Mercy, or blowing an entire week's paycheck at M.A.C. just for eyeliner (because ya girl is broke). Still, I enjoy a good vampire flick (and a lot of bad ones), prefer to rock a good dark lip, and one time blew $50 at Hot Topic on a coat that makes me feel like a tragic Edgar Allan Poe heroine. I guess you could say I'm barely a low-budget goth, but that's okay. That's just my vibe, I guess.

So today, I thought I'd count down 10 of my favorite music videos, that are all at once super totally goth and not at all. In no particular order, of course. (Because of Tumblr’s rules, I can’t embed more than five videos at once. So I’ll link to the bottom five, and embed the top five.)

10. "Mine" - Kim Jae Joong If the former TVXQ member was looking to make a name for himself, other than being just a K-pop prettyboy, well, he did it right. He was already a bankable actor, racking up views on both the big and small screens. And even after departing from TVXQ, with fellow ex-members Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu, formed the group JYJ, also successful in their own right. However, Jaejoong was not content with staying the course of K-pop typicality. In response, Jaejoong tapped into his inner rocker, unleashing "Mine," off his first solo mini album I. In this video, he runs through dark forests, plays with snakes, and struggles to break free from a wall, before appearing at the end of the video as a vampire that looks straight out of a J-rock band. One can only argue that this is Jaejoong's final form. Or is it?

9. "Hyde" - VIXX While VIXX started playing with darkness in "On and On," it was "Hyde" where they really hit their stride. Telling the story of a man struggling with a Jekyll-and-Hyde-esque duality in a relationship, images of the band's six members are juxtaposed--wearing white as cute, loving, boyfriend material, and black as horrifying, nightmarish, even abusive monsters. I gotta give an award to Leo for looking a little too into it when he strangles his lovely lady, shortly before black angel wings burst from his back. Dude is scary. And so is the setting of this video! It appears to be a vaguely decrepit mansion crawling with macabre decor...and some classic creepy crawlies. It's no wonder VIXX are pegged for K-pop's go-to goths. (For more creepy craziness from VIXX, there are a lot of videos to choose from, but perhaps nothing is more terrifying than “Voodoo Doll,” a video so gory it was banned from TV! Don’t worry, though--there is a clean version.)

8. "Election Day" - Arcadia When Duran Duran temporarily split in 1985, they birthed two side projects. On one side, the pop-friendly Power Station, led by powerhouse vocalist Robert Palmer, along with drummer Tony Thompson of Chic, and Duran's own John and Andy Taylor. Then there was Arcadia, the artsier goth-influenced group, comprised of Nick Rhodes, Simon Le Bon, and for a short period, Roger Taylor. In this video, Le Bon just looks like he got a nice dark dye job, but it's Nick Rhodes who got the full goth makeover, because of course Nick Rhodes did. I'm not exactly sure what's even happening in this video--leave that to anything Simon Le Bon did in the 80s--but the image of Nick Rhodes dancing around with a candelabra is pretty goth, if I do say so myself. Also, it's just a damn good song. And album.

7. "Married to the Music" - SHINee As K-pop acts go, SHINee have not always been the group that goes with the flow. Instead of ripping off T-shirts in music videos, they play with unusual concepts, sometimes freaky ones. Among those was 2015's "Married to the Music." While not exactly elegant, "Married" boasted a quirky, camp-horror concept, inspired equally by Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Michael Jackson's "Thriller." In the video, the five members visit a wacky house party in which, throughout the night, they find themselves having various body parts removed in bizarre methods. Key gets his head hacked off while spinning on a giant roulette wheel. Taemin's eyes pop out when he gets smacked in the back of the head by a baseball bat. A phantom hand in the sink rips off Onew's nose. Jonghyun's mouth comes off after some kind of kiss of death. Then, Minho's entire body is sacrificed in a birthday cake incident gone wrong. All this culminates at the end, where our mystery woman uses the discarded parts to build the perfect FrankenSHINee. Like Mary Shelley, but with more BB cream and an Off the Wall beat.

6. "Beast and the Harlot" - Avenged Sevenfold Unlike SHINee, A7X have always toyed with the darkness, but in a similar manner, do it their own way. This cut from 2005's City of Evil is actually a track describing the fall of Babylon, in incredible detail. The video, however, tells of a Faustian tale, through a lens of rock 'n roll excess. A visually striking video, and I'm not just talking about Zacky Vengeance's eyeshadow. Careful what y'all are getting into when signing contracts, guys.

5. "Call Me When You're Sober" - Evanescence I could list nearly any Evanescence video, really. In fact, I kind of owe a lot to Evanescence, since they kind of helped me discover my artistic identity a bit. That said, I picked this cut from 2006's The Open Door. In it, Amy plays Red Riding Hood, on a pretty bad date with the Big Bad Wolf, played by dashing British actor Oliver Goodwill. He cuddles up to the plaid-clad Amy, who is clearly uncomfortable with his advances. Somewhere there is an awesome scene with Amy surrounded by black-clad dancers as they float above the ground, and this is honestly the coolest thing I've seen in an Evanescence video (though, truthfully, "Good Enough" was pretty cool, too). But nothing tops Amy walking toward her douchey wolf--across the table, as dining utensils go flying off the table. Very Once Upon a Time. Regina would be proud.

4. "Out of My Mind" - Duran Duran

This is an obscure cut from their 1997 album Medazzaland, a period in which the beloved New Romantics got suuuuuper experimental. It's hard to find this video in HD on YouTube, so you kinda take what you get. The then-trio of Rhodes/Le Bon/Warren Cuccurullo traipse around a creepy house, are sometimes ghosts haunting a library, or sometimes--in the case of Rhodes--are Rococo gothic drag queens. Also, Simon rocks a choker at some point. Totes 90s. Also, the setting and cinematography recall Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." Hey, wasn't that by an 80s band, too?

3. "Frozen" - Madonna

I was maybe around seven or eight when Ray of Light was released. Maybe. But I vividly remember seeing this video on VH1 when my mom left it on. I was freaked out by it at the time, but of course, I was a child, of course I would be. A solitary, black-clad Madge dances around a barren wasteland, cuddling nothing but her flowing gown as ravens surround her. I think she was playing with Indian motifs at the time, considering her hand gestures and tattoos (also, Ray of Light boasted "Shanti/Ashtangi," never forget). This was probably the beginning of the Kabbalah thing, too, but it wasn't quite as big a story as it would become years later.

2. "Within Me" - Lacuna Coil

I'd be betraying myself if I didn't include a Lacuna Coil video in all this, another group that, with Evanescence, led me down an aesthetically dark path. A mellower cut from 2006's Karmacode has vocalists Andrea Ferro and Cristina Scabbia at odds, with Andrea sitting lonely in some kind of elaborate chair or throne, as Cristina crawls the desert, producing these creepy black tendrils for some reason. It's just a pretty video and song.

1. "Sayonara Hitori" - Taemin

For his first Japanese solo single, SHINee's Taemin pulled out all the stops. None of the cutesy image that was cultivated during SHINee's early period, instead, Taemin fully embraced his darkness, portraying several different characters. The first looks like he walked out of Inuyasha, dancing around a piano (no, I don't know why either) as blue flowers grow around him. The next scene finds him clad in the edgiest black garb possible as samurai spar behind him. Perhaps the most goth thing, however, is Taemin laying in a black coffin as very fabulous mourners lay blue flowers down. Not bad for a kid who somehow loses nearly everything he touches. Gotta keep it relatable. Of course, I subscribe to the belief that Taemin couldn’t have gothed it up without Jaejoong paving the way.

Concentrate on the medieval elements of the Abbey, which can be difficult to focus on because of the build up of later monuments. Don't worry If you feel a little overwhelmed: beginning to deal with disorientation is part of the point. Give yourself time to move through the many spaces and see what you can see. I encourage you to visit not only the main body of the Abbey Church but also the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries in the triforium (access from the south transept) - partly for the spectacular view, which helps to understand the architecture, and partly because the galleries contain other crucial medieval material. Look out for the Westminster Retable and the Liber Regalis. In the main church, don't miss the portrait of Richard II at the west end of the nave.
