#greeks in Australia

hello theitsa mou! recently i stumbled upon the term w*g and i am a bit confused as to whether that's proof greek people experience racism in australia and if non-australian greek people can reclaim the term and wear it with pride. i thought to ask you since you are an expert on the matter - btw. there's a wikipedia page on the term. if you're not familiar i found the article very illuminating. but it still doesn't answer the question: who gets to say it? how are things for greeks and Italians etc in australia?
Hello paidi mouu! I am not an expert on the matter but I have collected some info... "Wog" is a reclaimed old slur by Greek Australians.
Tumblr media
I have a tag on it where you can read more!
I think it slowly loses its offensiveness in Australia? The other day I stumbled on a tiktok about the best nationalities to date in Australia and young people said the word "wog" a lot but in a fond and non-derogatory way. My understanding is, it has some dark history and you cannot exactly say it as a compliment to someone, but it's not a forbidden word to say and can still be used casually if your intent is good.
But personally, I think it's out of place for Greeks outside of Australia to use it for themselves since it's specific to Australian immigrants. If a Greek is discriminated against in another country, it's very likely that country will have different slurs for the "ethnics" so the Greek will be familiar with them.
Regardless, it's not exactly nice being "ethnic" or a "wog" in Australia. Immigrants have a past of experiencing racism and bigotry. Only recently things calmed down because people try to be more aware and because the Mediterranean/Balkan/East European immigrants have assimilated to a point and have established life and businesses. However, some racist and bigoted behaviors still hold well depending on location and circumstances.
Casual bigotry, police brutality, and enmity between different ethnic groups as to who is less "white" and more can be seen in the movie Head On (1998) about Greek immigrants in Australia, made by Greek Australians. You can see the film on... known ( 😉 ) Greek sites and also on Netflix.
Tumblr media
I want to ask my relatives in Australia about it (it's been three generations!) but we are not that close... One day, though!
I tried to give as much knowledge as I have because it's better than nothing, but If someone knows more on the matter feel free to add information here!

I saw a really funny post in which a Russian man bitches about the Rusalka in his backyard and how the house of his neighbour shits in his backyard (Baba Yaga) and that gave me an idea.
Alien wants to take over the earth. Normal animals are horrible but mythological are even worse.
What do you mean you this creature will give us a riddle?
Why should we afraid of this big snake?
Why are the humans afraid of these little human girls?

17,000 tourists arrived today with cruise ships in Santorini, a small Greek island. Santorini's total population is 17,000 citizens. Overtourism is real and it's scary.

Names I'd like to have more in media for metaphorical reasons
Disclaimer: I'm doing this out of the back of my head, so don't come after me. I'm not an expert in anything and I might have a different interpretation of the story. Do your own research.
Eve/ Eva/ Ewa
Christian/Jewish
The first human woman, she was banished from paradise because she was curious.
For those who were punished for curiosity
2. Adam/ Edim/ Edam
Christian/ Jewish
The first human man, he was banished from paradise because he trusted Eve
For those who blindly trusted the ones they love
3. Pandora
Greek
The first human (woman), she was gifted with a jar, that she was told to never open. She did it anyways (because she was so curious what is in the jar) and released all bad spirits (violence, war, famine, illnesses etc.) onto this world. She now has to guard the jar, which contains only one spirit: Hope
For those who brought evil into this world, without meaning to
For those who bring hope
4. Seth
Egyptian
Everyone hated Seth because he was the god of the dessert. So he killed his brother Osiris (the current king) to get the throne, the rule over the people who ignored him all those years.
For those who were always dismissed
For those who gave themself justice (or revenge)
5. Gnowee
Wotjobaluk (Native Australian)
Personification of the sun. She once was a mortal woman, who lived in darkness on earth and people only could move with the aid of bark torches. One day she left her little son sleeping while she tried to look for food. As she tried to go back, she couldn't find her son. So she climbed the sky to look for him, but she will never find him.
For those who never give up
For those who will do everything for their children
6. Israel
Jewish
His "Christian" old name was Jacob. He went to the desert, fought against God and won. So he got a new name (Israel) wich means: He who fought God
For those who fight against something bigger than themself
7. Hestia
Greek
She is the oldest Olympian Godess and the Godess of family. Her siblings all have petty (all of time), but she always tries to negotiate between her family
For those who are for peace
8. Romolus
Roman
He founded Rome with his brother Remus. When Remus did something against Roman Law, Romolus killed his own twin.
For those who are so obsessed with rules that they sign their own doom
9. Lorelei
German
She was like a siren but kind of different. Lorelei was the daughter of a river (the Rhein, if I remember correctly) and always sat naked at her father's side, because he promised to protect her or sm. So when sailors saw the beautiful Lorelei and wanted to get to her, her father Rhein always drowned said sailors.
For those who get a lot of bullshit from men
Those who don't do anything wrong, but always get wronged
10. Atlas
Greek/Roman
He is forced to carry the sky until eternity.
For those who are doomed with a task that will ultimately destroy them
I may do a part two in the future. Stay tuned.

Finding translations for Pontic Greek songs are the worst because translations are so far and few in between
Even if there's a Greek translation of the song, I can work with it and translate it into English. Love expressed in Pontic Greek songs is so... otherworldly? Much more intense as well... and how love is expressed in those songs is just so wonderful gjfkdghd

My Text to Speech reader sounds like it's chanting ancient incantations when attempting to read original Greek quotes as English. 💀
That, or it's introducing a new tech product, the SJtL 86!
