I think botw Link is no thoughts head empty about gender, partly due to not caring so much and partly due to amnesia which never fully goes away, but that they do enjoy dressing and presenting in various ways day to day and switching up pronouns. I don't think she has a lot of dysphoria, just fun doing whatever he feels like.

Botw Zelda otoh doesn't even realize that not being a Girl all the time is an option for her until reuniting with Link and then gets very in her head about it before eventually realizing that Gender as a very complex and personal construct both does not make any sense and yet is important to her. They have trouble admitting they want to use different pronouns and terms but feel so much better when they do. They do have dysphoria but feel a lot more comfortable once he's figured it out a bit.

My sleep schedule us all out of whack again, so I've been watching Griffin McElroy's TOTK stream from release day.

Watching his face during the title skydive sequence was delightful, and it got me thinking about how BotW and TotK are such perfect examples of how to weave nostalgia into something without making it incomprehensible or off-putting to newcomers.

I was talking to Roomie the other day about how fucking amazing the soundtracks are even if you've never played any other Zelda game, but how there's a little extra flair for those of us who did play the older games. The callbacks blend in so perfectly that none of it feels out of place or overly attention-grabbing. I like that a lot.

Any other Zelda fans out there?

Okay, so lately I've been playing the new Zelda game, and finding out that Zelda moved into Link's house in Hateno in between the games has made me want to write a bunch of domestic Link/Zelda fluff. Any takers?

I just want to do fluffy/smutty threads, could do them settling down in Hateno, traveling around Hyrule to rebuild, etc. I'm thinking threads in between BotW and TotK, I haven't finished TotK yet so keeping clear of spoilers therein, but I just love this version of Link and Zelda and would love to play it out!

I was thinking of using Danny Griffin for Link, if that has any influence on your decision:

It’s just so good....and it loops perfectly you don’t even need to edit it with the website. It’s kinda got a meloncholy vibe but it also BOPS in my opinion. So fantastic I would kill for the sheet music. Personally I think it’s the best music for writing because it’s tone doesn’t mess with my writing that much

Ballad of the Windfish

A bit more energetic, so perhaps not for writing your calmer writing pieces, but it’s still fantastic all the same. I discovered this one rather recently through a friend, and I can say that it is so well crafted and it has that magestic vibe that’s so good for when you’re writing certain scenes. 

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - "Life at Garreg Mach" [Hideotronic cover] 

Technically not LOZ related, but it’s such a bop I couldn’t help it. Can you notice the pattern of everything being instrumentals yet? Not only is this an incredible bop, but it’s got a vibe with just enough energy to get you in the mood for writing, but come on, the FE3H soundtrack has got the perfect vibes for loz. It’s amazing. Honorable mention is Swift as Wind, cause RPG songs are literally crafted to keep you focused and engaged, so it’s always great to listen to those OSTs.

Wait I just realized you didn’t technically specify loz so really I could just recommend all my playlist...hehehe. ANYhow, the Atla soundtrack is so good, but I really like listening to these covers when I’m writing action/dramtically important scenes. 

It’s just a bunch of Rito related songs on guitar or piano

I usually stick with my Botw (calm) playlist because I’m a simp for Revali because guitar is pretty and calming and it keeps my writing tone consistent and I’m not too distracted. The Toader and Sam Griffin are my favs so check out their covers.

The Octopath Traveler soundtrack is underrated and I will forever be salty that Red Dead Redemption beat it at the game awards anyhow here is a Jazz cover of Settlement in the Red Bluffs

Octopath Traveler OST is so good!?!?!? Again, to my earlier point about how RPG music is so good for writing because it’s specifically crafted to keep you engaged yet doesn’t cloud your thinking in “battle,” but then on top of that the music here is TRULY A BOP. ALL OF IT. ALL IF IT BOPS. THE SOUNDTRACK HAS EVERYTHING. Want dramatic god killing music? Boom, listen to They Who Govern Reason. Want classic knightly heroics? Listen to For Redemption following into Decisive Battle 2. Want a calm and innocent tune as you write your characters relaxing on the banks of Hylia River? Bing, bam boom, River of Life. The one I linked above is perfect for your tavern vibes, and there’s just so much more please god someone gush about this game and its soundtrack with me I feel like I’m the only one it’s so good and it pairs so well with zelda too please play the fucking game and talk with me about the music I love it so much aaaaaaaaaaaa

Any recommendations: books/TV/other?

Books: The heroin diaries by Nikki Sixx and Ian Griffins is hands down my favorite book, it's the diary Nikki Sixx kept the year of 1987 when his heroin addiction was at its worst and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. I read that book so much it fell apart and I had to buy a new copy.

This Is Gonna Hurt by Nikki Sixx is another good one, a photo he took of a full service sex worker as he asked the question "is your mother proud of you?" always hits me right in the honey nut feelios.

Dark Rivers Of The Heart by Dean Koontz was a good read.

The May Bird series, though it's meant for children, is an amazing book trilogy.

The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith is a good witchy book and the last book I read.(that I still need to return to the library)

Tv:

Maid on Netflix is a good series but big trigger warning for domestic abuse

Castlevania was 10/10

Sex/Life is a good NSFW raunchy series

Lucifer seasons 1-3 is good but kinda went off the rails after FX cancelled and Netflix took over and I'm not a fan of seasons 4-6

Nier and botw are like two completely different games how could someone even compare the two? Nier is all about combat while botw is about exploration

well i wouldnt say that nier is all about combat.  its mostly about its narrative and playing with expectations.  platinum did the combat because yoko taro is not good at directing combat systems in his game (the original nier was ass to play)

and they are both open world games.

it was a podcast where 4 people were just deciding on their own game of the year and it was set up like a tourney bracket where games faced off against each other.  one of the dudes was a HUGE nier advocate.

but mario ended up going up against nier.

but it was argued that mario was a game of joy in a year that didnt have a lot of joy, which i TOTALLY get and understand and that nier is a pretty bleak game with lots of death and sadness.  although i would argue that nier is ultimately a game about hope despite extremely bleak situations.  when you finally complete nier, you arent left with some empty sad feeling; you are left with a really powerful message of hope and strength.

and then, griffin also later went on to talk about how great pubg is, a game about murder.  which is exactly the reasoning he used to eliminate nier.

another problem is that griffin didnt actually get all the way through the game,  only ending a and b, so it just felt very unfair that he got to praise mario so hard and criticize nier so much when he didnt even experience the full game.

and he says that it was because the combat and exploration arent very compelling, or not compelling enough to keep going through nier, which is absurd to me.  botw has shitty combat, the reason its such a major piece of the game is because of the wack ass durability system.  zelda games have never had good combat.

not only that, but it was argued that playthrough a and b are virtually the same, which is an argument that pisses me off to no end.  while they are the same events, the purpose of playthough b was to get context for everything in a.  playthough b even starts ENTIRELY differently, with one of the most memorable sections i can think of in a game .  it was argued that its the games fault for not telling people to play past ending A, but the game EXPLICITLY tells you to play the game again for a new perspective and if you even bother to start up a new game, the intro is entirely different.

botw ended up winning goty, which, whatever.  its a typical choice that i highly disagree with because for all the revolutionary things that the game might have done for its own franchise, i think it has a lot of shit that is wrong with it.  

i do think nier is not only a better game, but a more important game, just in general.  i dont even think that nier is my favorite game of the year, but i would 100% rate it my goty because the way it tells its story is really REALLY special and is the kind of thing that can only be done in a video game.

im just annoyed because nier got pretty short changed in the discussion, although the one dude who advocated for it, chris plante, REALLY advocated for it, which was nice.
