Bonus(s):
[Sootopolis City. Wallace has returned from the Sky Pillar.]
Archie: Kyogre this isn’t you!
Maxie: Stop, Groudon!
Steven: *squints*
Steven: The orbs…
Archie: what about them?
Wallace: the legends say that the coloured orb corresponds to the colour of the Pokemon
Maxie: ah. That’s what they were trying to say… *wordlessly swaps orbs with Archie*
Archie: thanks darling *deep breath* KYO—
Steven: too late.
***
[Rayquaza has descended. They’re telling Kyogre and Groudon to knock it off. Steven has laid out a blanket in front of the Sootopolis Gym. They’re all lounging on it.]
Wallace: But you could have stolen—
Maxie: taken
Wallace: *sighs* taken the orbs together
Steven: could have helped with the confusion
Archie: it wouldn’t have been in the spirit of our competition
Wallace: … competition?
[a bit later. There’s sandwiches now. Somehow.]
Steven: —prime for an obstacle course, as long as you don’t disturb the graves.
Wallace: That would be an instant DQ.
Archie: *nods slowly* huh! Never thought of Mt Pyre as an obstacle course before.
Maxie: mmm. I can see it. *smirks at Archie* I’d beat you in the foot race any day
Archie: but I’d already be ahead cause I’d swim up route 123 faster.
Maxie: simple. I’d tag in Courtney. She’s a good—
Juan: *exits gym* Could you do this somewhere else? There’s new challengers waiting, but you’re blocking the way *gestures at May*
May: *waves* Hey
***
[Alola, Hano Grand Resort Beach. Maxie is reading a book. Archie is stretching in preparation to head into the water with Sharpedo.]
Archie: that one mountain in Unova…
Maxie: Twist?
Archie: no… Turnback?
Maxie: Reversal?
Archie: yeah! Pretty neat how a mountain can be so full of water. How does that work?
Maxie: Darling, Reversal Mountain is a volcano.
Archie: *stops stretching and stares at Maxie* The mountain is full of water. Volcanos aren’t full of water.
Maxie: *places bookmark and shuts book* are we talking about the same place? The one next to Lentimas?
Archie: yes. North of Black City.
Maxie: … Black City? You mean the big forest, right? White Forest?
Archie:
Maxie:
Both: WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
***
[Post-coitus. They’re cuddling.]
Archie: *pulls his husband closer* what’s next, M?
Maxie: *kisses his husband’s chest* After the land reclamation?
Archie: yeah
Maxie: … hmmm. I haven’t thought that far. You?
Archie: well…
Maxie: yes?
Archie: Wallace mentioned that Mightyena would ‘dazzle the crowd’ in a Super Contest
Maxie: *looks Maxie in the eye* and I’ll be your biggest fan
Archie: *flustered* *leans in closer*
Both: *instense kiss*
[later.]
Maxie: or…
Archie: hm?
Maxie: *smiles* my Mightyena could be the one dazzling crowds
Archie: *grins* oho!
[They both start taking part in Super Contests. They shine apart, but they shine even brighter together.]
THE END.
[Mt Chimney peak]
Archie: hey could you stop my boyfriend? It’s not safe to stand that close to an active volcano
May: oh I’m definitely gonna stop… wait, that’s why you’re stopping him?
Archie: *confused* oh so you wouldn’t ask someone to pull Brendan back if he was standing too close to the edge of a cliff?
Magma Grunt: *throws out Poochyena* FIGHT ME DAD!
May: *concerned* you know what, just… I’ll stop him.
***
[Pyre Peak]
Mt Pyre Duo: hey what are you doing?
Maxie: *taking red orb* oh just taking this. My husband is coming by later; please don’t give him the other one.
Mt Pyre Duo: we aren’t giving you that!
Maxie: oh? Then I’ll just *takes orb and leaves anyway*
***
[Pyre Peak]
Mt Pyre Duo: *doing their best to defend the orb* are you that other man’s husband?
Archie: *doing his best to snatch the orb* oh he called me his husband? :D
May: hey hey what’s going on here
Archie: *blushing* I’m about to get married
May: ????
Archie: *leaves in the confusion*
***
[Magma hideout]
Maxie: hello, child. You’re just in time to witness history
May: *watchibg Groudon awaken* hey is it true you proposed to Archie?
Maxie: *blushing* I did no such— *remembers that he slipped and called Archie ‘husband’* *blushes harder*
***
[Slateport City]
Archie: Will Maxie think I’m cool for stealing this submarine?
[Mossdeep City]
Maxie: Will Archie find it amazing that I took over this space centre?
Both: *sigh*
***
[Seafloor Cavern]
Archie: *awakening Kyogre* he may have done it first, but I’ll do it better!
May: hey, where is Kyogre going?
Archie: huh? Kyogre? KYOGRE!
Kyogre: *off to find Groudon*
***
[Route 128]
Archie: what’s going on? This isn’t what I wanted!
Maxie: I think… I think we fucked up.
Archie: *realises how serious it is cause Maxie never curses* how do we fix this?
Steven Stone: *flies in on Skarmory’s back* we need the orbs in Sootopolis City, now.
May: great. They just… left.
***
[Sootopolis City, Groudon and Kyogre fighting]
Archie: babe, this isn’t working!
Maxie: don’t ‘babe’ me, honey; focus!
May: hey, how can I help?
Steven: I think my husband might need your set of skills.
May: … you’re married?
Steven: *holds up left hand*
Archie, Maxie: *point at Steven’s left hand*
***
[Sootopolis City, crisis dealt with]
Archie: so… you called me ‘husband’
Maxie: *blushes* yeah
Archie: do you want me to be your husband?
Maxie: *blushes* yeah
Archie: good, cause I want to be yours
Maxie: *wraps his arms around Archie’s shoulders and kisses him*
May: finally
The People of Sootopolis: *confused cheering*
Steven: *wiping tears away* that was great
Wallace: that wasn’t such a bad double date
Steven: …double date?
Juan: *exiting gym* could you guys take this somewhere else?
***
[Lilycove Point]
Officiant:
Archie: I do!
Officiant: …sir, I haven’t even started.
Maxie: Archie, light of my life, water that quenches the flames of my love—
Archie: *bawling*
Brendan: *looking at May with tears in his eyes* Will your vows sound like this?
May: *trying not to cry* will yours?
Archie: *tosses bouquet*
Tabitha: *catches it* well then *turns to Matt and starts making out with him*
***
[Alola, honeymoon]
Maxie: hey, when did you realise you loved me?
Archie: when you told me nothing would stop you from achieving your goals. You?
Maxie: when you told me you’d be the only thing to stop me from achieving my goals.
THE END.

Akari stared at Irida blankly, before laughing hollowly. "Ha. Ha. Ha. No," she said, before taking a drink of her water.
"O-oh," Irida said, fidgeting as Akari stowed her water skin again. "I'm sorry, I hadn't realized that you might need to keep it a secret-"
"Nothing like that," Akari interrupted her. She sighed and rubbed her eyes tiredly. "I forgot you wouldn't be familiar with Hoenn. We're... my region is different. From here. We don't... don't honor our gods like that. Or, uh, at all, almost."
"Really?" Irida said, shocked. "I mean, I don't mean to judge-"
Akari waved her hand at her lazily. "No, really, it's fine. Hoenn's pretty... physical, I guess. The gods that sleep beneath my region are the primal embodiments of land and sea. They're ancient, and they don't really- don't exactly understand humanity. They don't need to. We show respect to the gifts they gave us, the land and the sea, and try not to bother them. We don't even mention them, if we can."
"That sounds so... hands off," Irida murmured. "Do you really have nothing you do to honor them directly?"
Akari shrugged awkwardly. "Oh! I guess there's this like, litany? It's not really a prayer to them or anything, but kids kinda pass it around at school, especially if there's like, earthquakes or stormy weather. The real little ones compete to see who can memorize it first."
"I'd love to hear it, if you would be so kind," Irida said politely.
"Uh, yeah, give me a minute," Akari said, squinting. "Been a bit since I've said it."
Irida waited patiently as Akari closed her eyes and concentrated.
"We pray that the god keep to their slumber," she intoned. "May their dreams be as deep and endless as the darkness that cradles them. May they never wake, even if the ground moves in waves and the sea turns to stone. If ever they return to the sun's light, may the sky itself come crashing down to bury them in dark dreaming once again."
She opened her eyes and shrugged. "I dunno, just a weird kid's thing. Oh, wait, is that a Drifblim? They usually stay up so high in the air!" She ran off, not noticing Irida's open-mouthed shock.
Author's note- Irida is saying a Shinto prayer, the Hi Fu Mi norito. It doesn't translate well to English because so far as I found, it's not actual words, but it is a prayer for purification. This is roughly all I know from some googling, I am not a practitioner of Shinto. The text is copy-pasted, so sorry for any irregularities.
Note 2: I think Hoenn is the funniest region to compare to Hisui's spirituality and debates over the "true Sinnoh", because Hoenn is pretty aware that there's Kyogre and Groudon, they just want those two idiots to shut up and stay asleep. If one wakes up, it screws up the balance of nature. If both wake up, they have a screaming fight until the landlord (Rayquaza) comes to tell them to shut up. Like every other region has some sort of 'sacred area', and Hoenn is just "Hey. Don't go, this cave is almost impossible to get into anyways, and the thing inside it is sleeping for good reason. Go make a secret base, that's more fun anyways."

Vacation('s all they ever wanted) PT. 2
7k+ sequel fic to the canon-rewrite I did of the postgame Groudon mission!
Lunick and Solana finally take a much-needed vacation in Summerland together, where they get the chance to relax, enjoy the beach, and perhaps accidentally... confess their feelings.
Part 1 | Part 2 [You are here!]
Bringing Lunick back to consciousness was absolutely no small feat for the universe to pull off this time.
...That’s not to imply that such a task was ever to be mistaken as ‘easy’; the guy was absolutely one of the groggiest, heaviest sleepers in all of Fiore. Maybe even further. No alarm clock, no vibrating phone, no lights on a timer could ever wake that man up before he decided he was done sleeping.
(Well, except for one alarm clock. A particularly obnoxious one, with blue hair, that broke into his dormitory in the mornings and practically jumped on him like an overexcited kid until he got up and yielded to her wishes. But that was neither here nor there.)
Today, however, the poor dude had just straight up nearly died earlier. He deserved the nap. And so, even though Solana was awake before him, she’d simply spared him the trouble and let him rest.
Groaning to himself, Lunick rolled onto his back and pushed the hair out of his face, reacquainting himself with the world. He wasn’t in his bed back at the Ringtown Base dorms: ah, that’s right. He was actually on a vacation, for once. The humid air and the lazy salty breeze licking at his skin suddenly felt a lot more in place.
The gentle wind hadn’t only brought in the classic Summerland smell; it carried a quiet voice along with it from the open screen to the bungalow’s private deck, one he knew all too well. Smiling to himself, he hoisted up to a sitting position, swinging his legs over the edge of the bottom bunk bed to get them underneath him. He swayed a little as he walked across the wooden floors, still sleepy, and rubbed his eyes as he slid open the screen quietly.
Solana was on the phone out on the deck, sitting in one of the two chairs in the shade and facing out to watch the ocean as she chatted. Her legs were crossed and tucked up onto the seat of the chair with her- something both Plusle and Minun had apparently taken as an open invitation to curl up together on. Her hair was braided back into a ponytail that draped over the seat’s backrest, which Lunick crossed over to stand behind and absentmindedly combed a hand through as he cleared his throat to bring attention to himself without interrupting.
She immediately looked up at him from where she sat, a sheepish and apologetic expression on her face as she covered the microphone of the phone to address him instead. “Sorry,” she half-whispered, squinting in the bright sunlight of late afternoon. “Did I wake you?”
Lunick just shook his head, an amused huff leaving his nose. He practically mouthed the words since his voice was so hoarse and quiet: “Who you talking to?”
The teal-haired girl uncovered the phone, answering his question just by going back to her conversation. “Sorry mom, I missed that last bit. Lunick just finally rose from the dead.”
The comment got her ponytail a playful little tug, and he reached over her shoulder, taking the phone right out of her hands without asking and putting it to his own ear instead. “Hi, Mrs. Hinata,” he greeted, clearing his throat again in attempt to rid it of the groggy, gravelly texture to his voice. This was far from the first time he had ever talked to her parents; over the year and a half of he and Solana being inseparable at the hip, they’d most certainly become acquainted with one another. And she had mentioned earlier she had intent to call home- anyone from her hometown would absolutely lose their marbles at hearing the legendary encounters she’d had in the past few days. “You know, your daughter really, really saved my sorry ass today. Saved all of ours, actually.”
He took the phone and started heading back into their bungalow, having completely commandeered the call with her own mom for himself. Solana rolled her eyes and twisted towards him in order to protest that he had been the one to actually fulfill the Groudon capture, but Lunick had already walked back into the living room with her mother in tow, the two of them gushing like old knitting buddies on and on all about her. It was almost a little disgusting how long the both of them could go, boasting with pride over Solana’s achievements; she’d “unfortunately” seen it happen firsthand.
Rolling her eyes with an amused scoff, the 21 year old gently slid their two Pokémon back down to the wooden deck and stepped inside as well, both electric rodents bounding at her heels to follow. She made expectant hand gestures at him to surrender the phone back over- and he begrudgingly complied, a very pleased-with-himself look on his face as he watched her end the call. “Okay, okay. Yes, I will get that headshot of me sent over, okay…! Do not send my high school photos in to the Sootopolis papers…!!”
Lunick laughed a little at the intensity of which she stressed that point, admittedly a little curious just quite what Solana’s school pictures growing up must’ve looked like. He’d never been to Hoenn, much less the isolated caldera of a city that she was born and raised in, but going home with her one holiday just to see it all for himself was definitely on his bucket list some time.
“Okay. Yes, I’ll call Base and ask them to send my portfolio for you to give. … Alright! Okay!!” She gave a small laugh, amused at how excited her parents both were over hearing their daughter lived a part of their culture’s lore so intimately. “Mmhm. Alright, I’m gonna let you both go now, alright? I’m starving, and Lunick’s always an endless cesspool when it comes to food, so I think the two of us are gonna go get something to eat now that he’s up.”
He heard her parents reply something muffled, but didn’t make it out. It made Solana huff and blush, though, so he could extrapolate well enough that the comments and teasing had extended beyond the region of Fiore. “Yeah, yeah. I love you both too. Talk to you soon.”
She hung up the phone, and Lunick finally let out a prolonged groan he’d been holding in as he stretched down to scoop up his Minun. “Sleep well?” He asked Solana as he righted himself again, his eyes drooped already back to half lidded as he pressed a kiss to the top of the Pokémon’s head.
“Mmn,” Solana answered, punctuated with another yawn. “Yeah, but I’m still exhausted.” It meant a lot to hear her speak so honestly- with anyone else, Solana was always a go-go-go personification of the Energizer Buneary. “It’s like, lethargic, almost. I mean, I’m not quite sleepy anymore, but like, when I was out there on the phone, just staring at the waves… I just felt like I was sinking further and further into the beach chair.”
Lunick flopped unceremoniously onto the couch of the vacation living space they’d been allotted, smacking the cushion next to him twice to imply she should sit with him. Which she did, and nearly sunk in as soon as her body hit the seat.
Laughing to himself in realization, he shook his head. “Solana, you’re relaxed.” Giving her shoulder a lighthearted shove, he cornered himself against the armrest so he could face her more, propping his head on his elbow. “For once in your life, that is. You’re not used to living your life outside of a rigid itinerary.”
Based on the look on her face, he could tell that was quite exactly what she’d been planning to do. And before she could even say so, he cut her off, leaning forward as he caught it. “No. We are not making one, either.”
“... I don’t feel relaxed,” Solana protested, and her partner just shifted, putting a hand on her knee.
“You’re not used to feeling relaxed.” He corrected, a small toothy smile worming its way onto his lips. “You want something to do this week, yeah? Itching to be productive. I know.” Most of the time when he pointed out how much of a workaholic she was, it was via a means of dismissive teasing, but his words now were nothing but sincere and understanding. “How about this? You aren’t just bluffing off, doing nothing this week: you’re learning to take a good break. By the end of this week, I bet you’ll even be the master of vacationing, if you relax hard enough. That’s a better mindset framing for you, don’tcha think?”
The shorter girl eventually nodded, letting out a long exhale of giving in to his persuasion and collapsing onto his shoulder. “I meant what I said on the phone, you know.” She said, abruptly changing the subject, “I am actually starving.”
“And you meant what you said about me, too. I’m an endless cesspool when it comes to food, as you so eloquently put it, hm?” Lunick teased, patting her on the back reassuringly to let her know he was done harping on her unhealthy work ethic for now and allowing the topic to shift. “We should go out to eat at one of those touristy, on-the-beach sunset view restaurants. It’s almost sundown- I think that would be as good of a kick off to vacation as any, don’t you think?”
She agreed, and the both of them peeled themselves off the couch to do exactly that, spending the evening together lavishing in the gorgeous Summerland sunset over a delicious meal. When it was time to head back to their accommodations for the night, they enjoyed the tiki-torch-lit walk back on the beach, and both agreed to turn in for sleep quite early, still absolutely exhausted from the morning.
Unsurprisingly, Solana woke up the next morning far earlier than Lunick did. Bone-tired or not, early bird habits died hard. She wasn’t up quite at the crack of dawn as usual (and Lunick had insisted her alarm be shut off all week, if nothing else than for his sake while they were sleeping in the same room), but it was still probably at least an hour, maybe two before her best friend would rise from his slumber. She gently woke the Plusle up that slept on the pillow right atop her head, giving him a sweet head scratch before slinking down the ladder of the bunk beds she and Lunick had been sharing for the stay. He was a snoring, tangled mess within the sheets, all separated from the blankets and half dangling down onto the floor beneath them… And she couldn’t help but smile affectionately at it. Grabbing a post-it, she hastily scribbled down a note, just in case he were to wake up before she returned.
[Morning, sleeping beauty.
I’ve gone out on a run on the beach before the sun gets too hot. I’ll be back by 9 at the latest.]
It was a white lie, but what he didn’t know wouldn’t kill him. Changing into activewear, Solana grabbed her styler and holster and snuck her way into a small little clearing of underbrush that led into Olive Jungle. Her plan was to silently help the relief force and handle sectors of the jungle behind everyone’s back- so even though she wasn’t technically assigned the mission, she could at least contribute some sort of helping hand toward the restoration efforts.
And of course she did good work- albeit unwarranted, since there were Rangers actually assigned to do so that could have been perfectly capable to do the same once they fanned out far enough to reach the quadrat she was working in. But it was satisfying nonetheless. She’d lost herself in the hard work- using field moves to clear fallen trees from the quakes, capturing aggressive Pokémon and relocating them to safer areas, all the like. By the time she’d checked her watch, she realized she really probably should have started heading back by now, and hurried her way back out to the beachfront, unafraid to cut corners and take the nicks and scratches from the thick underbrush if it meant getting back quicker.
When she returned into the bungalow, not only was Lunick awake, but he was staring at her in a way that felt like he knew every last secret, and there was no use trying to hide. Of course, she still did try, but the disappointed mom vibes were very much still prevalent nonetheless.
“Oh, good, you’re back. How was your… beach run?” His tone of voice made it clear he was prodding, and he tried to play it off by grabbing them both bowls of cereal for breakfast, setting them down on the small table for two tucked away in the corner of the room.
“It was alright. You know me and my morning runs. Certainly even on vacation I can at least keep my routine, right?” It was punctuated by a half-nervous laugh, which was her fatal mistake. Now Lunick was certain she was lying.
“Crazy how you managed to even go on a run with your running shoes left here, you know. And miraculously, your work boots were nowhere to be found…” He huffed, turning to face her. Gingerly, he took one of her wrists, twisting it a little to eye up one of the scrapes her hurry back had given her. “You were out in Olive Jungle. Doing fieldwork, that you’re not supposed to be doing.” He accused, and the hand-in-the-cookie-jar embarrassment on Solana’s face was enough to confirm it.
Crossing over to the sink, he wet a few ripped pieces of paper towel for her to clean the new wounds, shaking his head. “That’s breaking rank, Solana,” he gently (but sternly) reminded her. “I know you’re not used to there being problems present and being told not to help… but this is not our problem. You’re even downright on administrative leave…!” He took her arm once again and pressed the wet towelette to it, pursing his lips in a thin line at frustration with her actions.
She pulled her arm back so it was no longer under scrutiny, huffing in indignance. “No one caught me,” she assured him, taking over and cleaning the few nicks she had herself. “I got in and out, completely under any radar.”
“I caught you.” Lunick corrected. “You’re lucky it’s me, because otherwise I’d have half a mind to report it.”
“But you won’t,” Solana butted in, more a statement than anything else.
“I won’t,” he agreed, and reached over to put his hands on her shoulders, tone turning more to one of pleading. “…If, you promise me you won’t do it again.” He gave her shoulders a squeeze. “…Please, Solana. I know being a Ranger fulfills you like nothing else on this earth, I know it’s been your dream for years now. But I also know you push yourself constantly without any rest. Please, just try to let yourself have this week off. And take this vacation with me.”
She was quiet for a short bit, digesting his pleas internally. And then she nodded, surging forward to accost him a warm, affectionate hug. “I’m sorry,” she apologized, even though he hadn’t been looking for one in the slightest. “… Thank you, you know. For fighting me so hard as you do to take care of myself.”
He gave a small grin, simply full of relief the small argument hadn’t grown into anything more. “Eh. What are partners for?”
Rolling her eyes at him discrediting his own efforts, Solana stepped back out of the embrace to sit herself down in front of one of the bowls of cereal he’d poured. “…Sharing breakfast with?” She lobbied, gesturing for him to take the other seat, which he complied to happily. And they did just that, the rest of the meal far less contentious than their minor altercation had been.
In return, Solana allowed Lunick to take the reins for the day and dictate their itinerary, which was really anything but: just a vague ‘we’re going to the beach!’ and nothing else as far as details.
Packing a bag of things they’d need after the breakfast, the two of them both changed into appropriate beach attire and hit the sand, as thankfully the walk to an open beach area was pitifully short at worst. It was an absolutely gorgeous day out today, too- albeit, very brightly sunny. But at least it wasn’t too sunny; compared to how the weather had been during the legendary beast’s rampage before they quelled it, this was nothing. And it wasn’t all too often that the both of them got to rock a pair of sunglasses, either, so it was almost a novelty.
Scoring a pair of public-use beach chairs already propped up on the beach, both Lunick and Solana claimed them by sprawling out their towels, which Plusle and Minun were quick to curl up on so they could snooze in the sun for once. Their conjoined beach bag went right behind the two Pokémon, and Solana was already rifling through it. “We should probably put on sunscreen,” she responsibly reminded, and pulled out the tube of the thick cream to share with him. “I’m gonna need assistance, if you don’t mind.”
“I’ll tell you what,” Lunick leered forward with a small smile, more than happy to do any favor for her, especially those where he got to both hold her and look out for her general health. He plucked the tube she was using to point at him right out of her hands, and waved it around himself to prove a point. “I’ll agree to help you- IF, you help me do mine as well.”
She laughed, and peeled off the oversized t-shirt she’d been wearing over her swimsuit as a coverup, balling it up in her hands and absolutely hucking it straight at him. “Deal,” she punctuated with a grin, taking the sunscreen back in his stupor to claw the shirt off his face, and squirting some out onto her hands to start the front side of herself, at least. “But do not draw on me or leave splotches, or else you will so pay for it.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time, Sol,” he huffed right back without missing a beat, pulling his own shirt off over his head as well and kicking off his sandals. He turned towards her and patted the beach chair in order to invite her to sit on it, making grabby hands up to where she stood to tell her to fork over the sunscreen and let him take care of her back. “Gimme. C’mere.”
Solana snickered as she did as she was told, sitting right in the chair in front of him, his legs on either side of her as he allotted himself some of the lotion and gingerly began to swipe it across her back. His movements were so soft and tender as he covered her skin- and it wasn’t like he had never touched her back before, either, but the way every touch was just so caring… Solana felt herself almost leaning into him, very soon found the skin on her face and ears searing for an entirely different reason than the blazing sun above them. She was just grateful he wasn’t in the position to see it, and that she could smother it away with the stark white cream before he got the chance to even know it was there.
“All set,” he vowed all too soon, reaching around her in a back hug of sorts in order to smear the residual sunscreen that was left on this thumb onto her cheek with a playful smile. “Me next?? My turn?”
“Yes,” she agreed with a fake exasperated sigh, secretly very much enjoying his antics, even if she wouldn’t let on. She stood up and twirled her finger to instruct him to turn around, and he did exactly that, trying his absolute best to just focus on covering the front half of his torso and not panic at the way she so delicately did his back half. Coming on a beach trip was a very good idea after all, so it seemed, and he guiltily felt the sudden desire to make sure they were extra diligent in reapplying, so long as they kept getting to share intimate moments of just caring for one another like this.
Popping up to his feet, Lunick pushed his sunglasses on top of his head and spun to face his best friend- she was putting the cream on her face and rubbing it on, and looked at him expectantly. “Did I miss any?” Solana asked as she capped the tube back up, tossing it back into their bag haphazardly.
“Just a little,” Lunick told her candidly, then stepped forward. “Here, I’ve got it.”
What he did was the exact opposite of keeping her skin from burning: he cupped her face with both hands, and very lovingly swiped his thumb under the curvature of her eyes, evening out any white blobs that had been left. “There,” he said with a small toothy smile, seemingly proud of his work. “You’re clean now. Ready to go?”
He held out his hand for them to run into the surf together, but Solana’s mind was too frantic and panicky at the moment from the way he had just held her to do the rational thing. So, mid-shutting-down, she resorted to doing what she knew best: smacking his hand to leave it empty, juking him out to make it a competition. “Last one to the water has to pay for lunch!!”
Her movements had been so sudden that it woke up the Pokémon briefly, but they’d known her too well at this point to bother being fully disturbed from their cuddle puddle. And Lunick knew her too well at this point too to let her get away with it fully, charging down the hot sands after her.
Despite the fact Solana went on runs in her free time more often than he did, she was better at endurance. When push came to shove, he could certainly still catch up to her in sprints when he wanted to, and this was one such case. As she slowed to avoid falling once her legs were waded into the blue water, Lunick came surging from behind her with his full momentum, trapping her in his grasp by throwing his arms around the waist and picking her up into the air. “NOT SO FAST-!”
She let out a loud squeal as she kicked and splashed in retaliation amidst her laughter, but he was headstrong and unrelenting as he carried her deeper. “Let me goo!” She whined through the bursts of giggles, and even heard a snicker or two coming from him as they waded in, too. And as soon as they were deep enough to safely do so, despite all her desperate pleas, he practically threw her down into the water, dunking her hard.
She gasped for air when she resurfaced- part to show her feigned offense, and part just to be dramatic, as she clawed at his chest to try and return the favor.
“Oops,” was all Lunick said, with the most mischievous smirk on his lips as he stood, unwavering under her attempts to push him down. “Did you say it was the most wet who had to buy lunch…?”
Letting out a loud groan of frustration (that her best friend only laughed at even harder), Solana kicked her legs against his underwater and sent him tumbling into the waves with a satisfied grin, crossing her arms triumphantly when he resurfaced again. “I suppose I can be amenable to that change in ruleset. Looks like you’re still paying.”
He snickered at her wit, shaking his hair out of his face like a wet Herdier and slicking it back over his head, smiling at her as he settled in to bobble over the waves together and just chat. “Fine,” he agreed happily, especially since she had gotten him back fair and square. “You win. I’ve got meals today.”
Pleased with the surrender, and unable to help the way her coarse challenger attitude softened upon seeing how adorable he looked with his hair wet, Solana settled in up to her shoulders to float, too. The waves were only swells at best, and didn’t really crash at all, so they were able to just watch the shore together peacefully, swaying up and down as the ocean took them. “…You know,” she spoke up after a short while, plastering the wet hair back out of her face, too. “This is… kinda nice.”
“Good,” Lunick immediately answered, so fast that he practically hadn’t even let her finish her sentence. He looked over at her with a sideways smile and only through one eye squinted open in the sunlight, and though she didn’t see it, Solana could feel his hand seeking out hers under the water's surface as they floated together. Just to make sure the tidal currents didn’t separate them, of course. “I’m really, really glad to hear you say so.”
She flushed- even if just out of not knowing how to answer someone caring so deeply about her, and instead chose to watch the sand, where Plusle and Minun had awoken and begun to play together. They were just two little red and blue dots amidst the bright reflective tan from out here, but they were seeming to have the time of their life, happily chasing one another up and down the beachside.
Lunick’s eyes eventually shut- but he wasn’t sleeping, she could tell that much. He was just soaking up the sun, enjoying the peaceful waves and having her there right beside him. And so she tried to take a page out of his book, to upkeep the promise they’d made earlier, and mirrored him exactly, resting back into the water lazily.
And it was nice. Not only was it bewildering to be not running everything a mile a minute, but so relaxing to be sitting here so still with her favorite person in the world, doing the same exact thing, sharing that silence with her. Maybe he did have a point, after all. And maybe deep down, she understood all this time why he always drove it so far home whenever he brought it up.
When their hands became too pruny to hold anymore, they agreed to get out of the water, immediately feeling bathed in the warmth of the breezy, Summerland air. Back at the chairs, they agreed to split up for an hour or so- Lunick, to take a quick nap, and Solana to explore the wrack line and look for odd looking seashells. They reconvened after and gathered up Plusle and Minun to grab lunch (which Lunick did, in fact, pay for) then returned to the beach for the afternoon, finding snorkel gear rentals at a shack on one of the docks. The reefs just off of Summerland were breathtakingly beautiful, full of color and abundance of Pokémon they rarely got to see up close or in person since marine life wasn’t their typical capture clientele. And if they swam far enough, there was no one else near them, so they got to experience it alone together. It was incredibly nice for the both of them to get to wholeheartedly share their love of wildlife with someone who understood and felt the same outside of a work setting for once; plus, the way Lunick screamed into his snorkel excitedly whenever he saw juveniles of his favorite reef Pokémon was just too endearing for Solana to focus on anything else.
Once both were sufficiently tired out from being in the sun all day, they went home to their rented bungalow to shower all the salt and sand off, changing into cozy clothes and settling in together for a board game and a movie. Dinner was ordered as a delivery so they could stay crashed on the couch together longer- and when it was all said and done and time for bed, Solana clambered up to the top bunk first, and Lunick would sit out on the deck and stare at the stars reflecting in the water until he was sleepy enough to crawl into the bottom one and join her off in dream land.
And so, that became their routine. They’d wake up whenever (a foreign concept to Solana- so she would usually get up first and venture out to get breakfast for the two of them), head to the beach, spend the day there, and come home for the night to just hang around the rental. And there was some variation: some days they made sand sculptures, others they went out to eat for dinner somewhere fancy by the seaside, and even managed to score a charter boat past the patch reefs one afternoon to get to watch a whole herd of Lapras frolicking and breaching out of the deeper waters, singing their beautiful songs. All in all, it was only barely halfway through the week, and they’d already been growing to love the laid back, vacation life very much.
In fact, just earlier today, they’d mistakenly forgotten their water bottles back at the bungalow when they set back out to the shore for the afternoon. Lunick had graciously offered to go run back and get them himself, which didn’t take very long… and yet, when he returned, he found Solana sound asleep in a hammock hung in the palm tree lines’ shade, swaying gently in the warm, misty breeze as Plusle and Minun played in the bushes behind her.
It was an incredibly adorable sight, and one he feared he truly may never see again, so before anything else, he whipped out his styler and snapped a photo of her all bundled up and cozy, taking what might’ve been among the first afternoon naps of her life.
Evidently, the noise of the camera shutter was loud enough of a click to disturb her, and she groaned laboriously, her face all scrunching up into a dramatic display of not wanting to be awoken quite yet.
“Shh,” Lunick mumbled quietly with a wry smile, crouching to put the metal water bottle that he’d gotten for her within her reach on the sand in case she woke up dehydrated. “Go back to sleep. No need to get up yet.”
But to that she groaned even more disapprovingly, and her arm stuck out of her little cocoon and waved lazily in his direction, grappling at the air aimlessly and practically in slow motion until it finally caught purchase on what she’d been looking to grab.
Which was Lunick’s shirt.
Yanking on it, she practically made him fall right over her. And he would have felt guilty for the way his clumsiness shook and nearly flipped the entire hammock she’d been so peacefully snoozing in- if the entire ordeal hadn’t been surrounded by her fits of sleepy giggles, quite pleased with herself and how he fumbled so awkwardly in attempt to keep from disrupting her more. “Lay with me,” she demanded in a soft tone, only just now bothering to barely peek open one of her eyes from behind where the wisps of her teal hair had fallen into her face.
And after all- who was he to say no to that? In what world would he ever?
Dropping his own water bottle and straddling his way onto the swaying bed, Lunick crawled and flopped on into the hammock with her, letting out a satisfied hum as he collapsed down into the fabric and laughing at how his lack of gentleness nearly sent her tumbling right out onto the sand beneath them. Even now, the momentum was kept from the haphazard entry and they swung back and forth, both of them pinned to one another in the center where their shared weight dipped the sling the lowest. “Gracefully, I meant.”
Lunick laughed quietly as she looked up at him, his arm just falling around her out of instinct (and half to ensure she didn't get any bright ideas to shove him out onto the ground for being so rowdy) as he wormed in close, getting comfortable. “See, that wasn’t specified,” he snickered at the halfhearted wallop she’d delivered against his chest, knowing very well it was a bluff based on the way he could see her toothy, amused smile. “I’m honestly just still in shock to see you of all people taking an afternoon nap.”
She huffed in indignance at his tone, wasting no time to curl up into his chest and rest her head against him. “You’re a bad influence,” she accused, but it held no fire behind it with the way she was already half asleep again and practically slurred them together.
“And I’ll continue to be, proudly,” he promised over a whisper, closing his eyes as well and burrowing his nose atop her head to nestle in for rest. They napped like that together longer than originally expected- but hey. That’s the perk of the only rule of their itinerary being that there was no itinerary; it didn’t matter that they’d spent more time snoozing than intended.
As it turned out, the week they happened to have gotten the chance to spend in Summerland was an incredibly fortunately-timed one. Leilani had called, and let them know to keep their eyes peeled that night for the annual schooling and breeding season of Lumineon and Finneon. It was bound to be a fantastical display of colors and light from beneath the waves all around the island: something they even closed the beaches early for that evening in preparation for the natural phenomenon. Apparently, the start of the spectacle was sudden and breathtaking, and the both of them agreed to camp out on the deck they had over the water all night to watch it.
The event was predicted to begin some time between 8 and 9PM, but there was no certainty of exactly when. And Solana’s sweet tooth had gotten the best of her- there was an absolutely delicious homemade ice cream shop only two piers over from the one they were staying at. She knew she could make it there and back in time.
Lunick stayed watch on the edge of their deck- he’d slipped off his shoes inside, and let his legs hang down over the water’s edge to dip in it just barely as the last remnants of the sunset melted into a rich navy blue. All of the residents of Summerland agreed this time of year to keep all street lights off so they could enjoy the spectacle in its entirety, so the sky grew even richer with stars than it had been the nights before- a visual treat within itself.
“Did I miss it??” Solana’s voice came flooding into his ears, along with relief of knowing she hadn’t. Lunick shook his head in his awed daze, unable to tear his eyes away from the sky at first as she stepped out onto the patio to join him. Her hands were full as she’d been juggling to carry both of their cones, and took the liberty in licking the back of one of her hands where the sweet treat had started to dribble down it. “Good. Here, take yours, they’re melting.”
He smiled up at her, looking at her with the same amazed and awe-inspired gleam in his eyes that he’d had when he was staring at the stars, as she was no less beautiful. He let out a loud huff in amusement as he took the handoff of his rocky road ice cream, letting out a small laugh as she sat down. “You treated yourself to some of mine on the way back, huh? Was it tax for having gone and gotten them?”
“I did not!” Solana falsely claimed, her face growing as crimson as the red velvet ice cream in her own cone for having been caught in the lie so blatantly. And he just shook his head, biting his lip to keep in a snicker.
“It’s on your face, Sol.” Before he’d bothered to think about the consequences of his actions, Lunick leaned forward and licked the creamy chocolate smear right off of her face, just barely outside the corner of her lips. “Yup. That’s my ice cream,” his own lips came into contact with her skin and just barely grazed over it as he spoke, before he sat upright again. And quickly put the two and two together of what he’d just done, when he saw her reaction to that.
Solana was absolutely paralyzed in stillness. She was more flushed than perhaps he’d ever seen her, and her eyes were so wide he could see the whites on each side of her irises. In horror? In shock? It was unreadable, but Lunick was quick to backpedal hard anyways, mentally screaming at himself for having been so stupid to allow himself to fall victim to the easygoing, endearing past few days feeling almost as if he and Solana were a couple. To the point where he must have clearly overstepped a boundary.
“...I’m so sorry,” he breathed out all at once, shaking his head in his own panicked shock that rose in his chest. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, I got caught u-”
Lunick watched in practically slow motion how his best friend’s fingers loosened around her cone slowly, until it dropped right in the seawater around their feet with a punctuated plop. And as it turns out, his was quick to join it- he would never get to enjoy the rest of that scoop beyond the tiny taste he’d stolen. Because Solana very suddenly surged forward like a striking Ekans, using her newfound free hands to hook around the curvature of his jaw as she kissed him square on the mouth.
It had been the final breaking point. For months now, they had been fallen for each other, but never dared to act upon it. The feelings had only blossomed and grew all that time, despite neither knowing the other reciprocated them. And today, they finally came to light.
The dark haired man was caught so off-guard by it all that he forgot to breathe for a moment, and in that pause, Solana began to draw back, just in case it was now she who was making an advance unwanted.
But he didn’t let her. Lunick instead wrapped his arms around her waist tightly and put his hands firmly flush against her back, immediately chasing her lips as they tried to leave in order to kiss her back in fervent way- lest the moment be lost forever.
A bright flash of light from below was what made them tear apart. Both stayed holding the other close, but whipped their heads with mouth agape out towards the horizon, which had lit up aglow with the heart-stoppingly gorgeous teals and greens of hundreds of Lumineon, swimming and dancing and weaving around one another in the most breathtakingly graceful way. They both let out a quiet gasp at the sight before looking back again at the other with a soft smile each, the shimmer of the bioluminescence reflecting beautifully in both of their eyes. “I couldn’t take it anymore,” Solana confessed, and Lunick let out a bubbly laugh as he kissed her curtly again, just because the precedent had been set that he could. She looked up at him lovingly with no regard for the natural wonder surrounding them and knit her fingers into the hairs on the nape of his neck, twirling them gently. “You know, when I was looking for you in the Relic, I promised myself I would at least tell you before it was too late how I’ve felt about you all this time.”
Lunick’s exhale was shuttered as he stared at her, taking the words in as fast as his foggy, elated mind would let him process it. “All this time?” He parotted back in disbelief, his tone of voice so soft and full of love. “You mean, we’ve both been waiting for nothing…?”
She held either side of his face with a joyful smile, tears of happiness misting her eyes. “Waiting for the perfect moment,” she told him, the same thing she’d been telling herself for so long now whenever she even thought about bringing her feelings to light. “Which, in hindsight, I realize now would have been thirty seconds later than what I did.”
He laughed at her joke about the Lumineon, louder than he needed to with her right here so close to him. But he couldn’t help it- her humor and the way she could so effortlessly bring levity to an otherwise heavy conversation were two of his absolute favorite things about her. “Every moment with you is a perfect moment,” he promised, and she lunged forward again to throw her arms around him, practically on his lap.
“I want to be like this,” she told him, curling her head into the crook of his neck so she could watch the Pokémon glow from her craned position enveloped with him. “I want to be like we have been this week for the long haul, maybe even after our final contracts with the Union. I just want to be with you.”
His heart soared, and he was certain she could hear it thumping wildly as the blood rushed to his ears and cheeks at her words. He wanted it too; he wanted it so much more than he could ever tell her with words alone. He’d wanted it for so long of their existing relationship already, and to hear her express the same… he almost had to pinch himself to ensure this wasn’t a twisted fantasy dream he’d wake up from far too soon.
“Then let’s start today,” Lunick counter-offered her, one of the hands on her back rubbing in soothing circles of pure adoration. “Solana, there’s something I think I’d like to finally ask.”
She knew. She knew what it was. It was the words she’d always dreamed of hearing, and today, she finally got to. Peeling herself back from him to receive them properly, she turned how she was sitting on the deck to face him more head-on, her knees bumping into his as she nodded. “I can’t believe you’re actually going to beat me to it.”
Lunick snickered, and took both her hands in his, the entire right side of his face aglow in the blue reflection of the gorgeous sight. But her eyes were only on him: he was the view, as far as she was concerned.
“Solana- I, your best friend, Lunick Kazuki, would truly and wholeheartedly love nothing more on this entire earth than to be officially yours. And I’m saying this for real this time, not just in the eyes of others, not just to get a couples coupon, not just to fend off any weirdos hitting on the other… Would you please, please be my girlfriend?”
The teal haired girl laughed at his bumbling dramatics and nodded wildly, leaning forward to peck him on the lips at how adorably goofy he always was. “It would be my honor,” she whispered, breathless, and crashed right into him as he pulled her in to cuddle and watch the rest of the migratory patterns together.
So as it turned out, Spenser was right all along: the vacation to Summerland was well-needed, even if not for the reasons he may have expected. And it was surely one that neither Lunick nor Solana would ever forget.

★. //   meme: honesty hour august - september ‘19.            status: one out of three, to be continued.
since you seem to have a split personality as pikachu, what would be your dream pokemon team? — a question sent by @lgcxking.
this definitely wins the cake when it comes to a hard question, because if there’s anything byun iseul cannot do, it would be to choose one dream team of the many many pokémons that exist in the world. well, no, he cannot do many things in all truths, but choosing a team would be one hell of a task. he takes his time, mulling over it. fathoming what kind of dynamics that would work within the system, how the group would be both offensive and defensive, cohesive at the same time. he squints for a bit, calculating and re-calculating until he has one definite answer that he’s happy with. “this is by far one of the most questions anyone has ever asked me, but,” he hums, “out of anything, right? can be from any region? legendary included? i’d have to go with my pikachu baby as a starter pokémon. no evolution, please. and also, psyduck for my psychic. i’d also love to have gyarados in the mix, along with umm... groudon for the ground type. my other and final two would be flareon and dragonite! phew, that was a difficult decision to make. i can make some more teams, definitely, but these make the best combination for me since i only had one team to make.”
skills aside, how different are you today as person compared to when you first joined legacy? — a question sent by @lgcmiso.
he quirks his eyebrows at the question. he’s one to contemplate, to overthink, definitely. so, when this kind of inquiries arises, he’s no stranger to the answers. still, iseul believes that he’s not as shallow as many would think he is, and he takes this type of talks seriously. self-growth is one thing that he’s always nurtured since he practically grew up without any impactful parental guidance. relying on himself has always been the way, and therefore, this comes as no surprise now that he tend to be reflective. he smiles politely, then, and tries stitching the answers together to make a coherent compilation. “i think i’ve grown in many ways, especially in views. you don’t see this kind of view in many places, especially school, and by this i mean having such a competitive environment as your surroundings. it’s cutthroat, and sometimes we would be tempted to see people as rivals all the time, but i learned to separate roles based on where we are. my friends can be my rivals at the same time, and i’ve made many friends, seeing different perspectives from people with so many different backgrounds. i used to believe that the industry would suffocate me, too, but now i don’t think i’d have it any other way.”
what do you miss about melbourne? — a question sent by @lgcsohee.
it’s a home away from home for him; melbourne, as beautiful as it is, has never been the first. seoul is where he knows he grew up in, but melbourne is one place where his mother resides, chasing after her dreams relentlessly. for that, the memories of the place are diluted with mixed reactions. feelings are contaminated with various factors, but he definitely always keeps this place on his mind no matter where he goes. it’s a second home, still, but it’s where he once belonged, too. “i definitely miss the coffee!” he chips in firsthand with a fond grin growing on his face. “the place is also idyllic, people have such rhythms that feel quite different from seoul. seoul is... busier, i think? people seem to hurry, but it also maintains a pace that i like. seoul is also warmer in terms of people, even when we all know that the freedom to express things is rather... limited. melbourne is definitely where people can be more open-minded, but it isn’t free from many issues as well. and i miss my place there, and my mother. i correlate melbourne with my mother, mostly.”
if you weren't training to be an idol, what would you be doing? — a question sent by anonymous.
“a pikachu impersonator?” he laughs. “you know like the people in japan who wear pikachu costumes and dance around together? i’d be one of them.” the jest pushed aside, however, he alters his expression to that of a more serious one. hints of playfulness are still there, though. he chuckles, then, and shakes his head. “i’d probably be studying more seriously. there are people who expected for me to excel not only in academics, back then. or, well, thinking about it... actually no. my parents didn’t expect much from me when it comes to my school results, but they definitely wanted me to follow their footsteps.” a pause, he lingers in the silence for a bit, looking slightly forlorn in reminiscence. “some people might think i’m a bad son because i clearly defy all those hopes, but i’ll manage something in the future about it. but to be honest, if i weren’t training to be an idol, i’d still be doing something else that wouldn’t follow that path either.”

In which the cave of earth is explored
Tumblr media
First: In which the human is transformed Next: In which the god of land is fought Previous: In which they travel to the cave of the earth
It was the tickling of feathers on her neck that woke up Nelvana. She blearily blinked open her eyes, squinting as she was greeted by the late morning sun shining brightly down at them. Adverting her gaze to keep her eyes from burning in the light, she looked around to check on her teammates.
While they had started just being beside one another, now they were piled on top of each other. Keahi’s head and upper body was resting on Nelvana’s chest, zir larger feathers being the source of the tickling that had awoken her. Nelvana found one of her hands nestled in the warm orange feathers on the torchic’s back, and her other hand bent back behind her head to help support her neck. Keahi was still sleeping peacefully, the slow rise and fall from zir breathing softly lifting and lowering the cubone’s hand. As Nelvana moved her other hand away from her head to brush the feathers away, she felt Alex’s arm, which had curled up underneath her. Turning her head to look, she saw the grovyle laying beside her, still asleep as well, although he stirred with the cubone’s movement. While Nelvana’s tail and lower body was now on top of his legs, and they were leaning against each other, he was still otherwise more beside them. So was Tsuki, however it was Keahi’s lower body that rested atop her, zir talons tangled in the long pelt.
Tsuki peaked open an eye, noticing Nelvana being awake as well now.
“Good morning,” she purred without moving.
“Morning…” Nelvana replied quietly, “what time is it?”
“Almost noon. I’d estimate we’re around eleven in the morning by now, I was going to wake you all if you didn’t wake in another hour,” Tsuki answered.
“Did you get any sleep?” Nelvana asked.
“I might have dozed off for an hour, but I didn’t need it yet,” Tsuki responded, “what language were you and Alex speaking before you went to sleep, by the way?”
Nelvana froze for a moment, instinctively tensing even though there wasn’t really anything to be ashamed about. Tsuki already knew about Nelvana being a human. She just hadn’t been expecting Tsuki to have heard them, and to bring it up.
“Oh, it’s human,” Nelvana told her, “well, one of the human languages… we actually have more than one.”
“That sounds unnecessary, no offense,” Tsuki chuckled.
“It kinda it, but it plays into culture and stuff though. Not that I remember much of the details…” Nelvana sighed, “I think I know two, but Alex just knows one.”
“Where did he learn to speak it, anyway?” Tsuki questioned.
“Mm… he picked it up here and there, from my family… and his,” Nelvana murmured, “we probably should wake the others up. I think it’s time to head in Magma Cavern…” she continued.
“What’re you two talking about…?” Alex slurred, awoken by the ending conversation.
“About whether we should wake you two up and head in,” Nelvana told him, “and we decided now. Let’s get up, eat and check the storage, and then tackle this dungeon,” she continued, sitting up.
Alex sat up as well, lifting up his arm that had been under Nelvana and wincing, “ack, that was a weird position I was in…” he muttered.
“This was a weird place to sleep in,” Nelvana retorted, scooting backwards to let her legs and tail drop off from their position on Alex. “Hey, Keahi, we’re getting up now,” she told Keahi, rubbing the torchic’s back.
“No…” Keahi whined, curling up more on top of the cubone.
“I’ll… I’ll tickle you,” Nelvana threated.
“Or you could just drop them,” Alex commented, standing up and stretching. “Ugh, I never want to sleep on rocks like that again,” he hissed at no one in particular.
“No…” Keahi repeated, now stifling giggles.
“I’m going with my idea,” Nelvana said, sticking her tongue out at Alex.
After giving Keahi one last moment to get up, in which zie didn’t, Nelvana moved her hand towards the torchic’s belly, before tickling zim quickly with her fingers, being carefully not to accidentally scratch zim. Keahi erupted into laughter, rolling away from the cubone and falling roughly onto the rocks.
“Okay, okay, I’m up!” Keahi groaned, standing up uneasily and shaking zirself off.
“Good, shall we check the statue and then eat, or eat and then check out the statue?” Tsuki asked, standing up and stretching as well.
“Check the statue first. We should restock on food,” Alex answered, “we ate a bit more than expected…”
“Well we walked a bit more than expected too,” Keahi teased, but with no malice in zir voice now.
Alex scoffed, not giving zim a proper response, but still smiling at the torchic. After Nelvana collected her club from where she stashed it in the rocks, the quartet finally headed down the hill to the mouth of the dungeon. Already they could feel that taking a break had been worth it, although Alex might not want to admit that yet out of pride. Reenergized and their spirits lifted, they walked up to the Kangaskhan statue, which while old, looked in the best condition they had seen out of one so far.
Opening the chest greeted them to more supplies than they should have had, many of the being in smaller sacs with notes attached with various messages of encouragement and good wishes to Team Galaxy from pokemon they hadn’t even met. Most of the sacs were filled with simple items or food, but a few with more helpful explorers’ supplies, like seeds, healing berries and orbs, were from other teams.
“Team Galaxy, I wish you the best of luck in this mission, please take these to aide you…”
“… and I’ve been inspired by your selflessness and determination! I hope that this will…”
“Thank you, Kecleon told us that you helped saved Octillery when…”
“Golem has been recovering well, and he wishes you luck, and so do we!”
    “…so, do your best!”
    “I don’t have much, but here’s this…”
“Don’t give up! We’re counting on you!”
Keahi’s eyes welled up as they looked through all the gifts and notes, “everyone… They all pitched in to help us!” zie gasped, “look at all this! There’s even a letter on behalf of those who couldn’t give us an item… and they didn’t even have to give us anything in the first place. This is so sweet…” zie continued, beaming up at zir teammates. “We’ll have to give them a big thank you when we get back!”
“Yeah…” Nelvana agreed, “wow, I really wasn’t expecting this support,” she mused, reading over some of the notes.
“Me neither. Of course, they would want us to succeed, lives are at stake here after all, but to go out of their way to send stuff to us…” Alex murmured, doing a quick scan of what they had laid out beside the statue to look over. “We can’t take all of this, but it is the thought that counts… I really didn’t think there were so many that knew about the team, and wanted to help us like this.”
“They all want us to succeed,” Tsuki repeated, “and so we shall,” she continued confidently. “Let’s go rescue that team and defeat Groudon to stop the disasters.”
“That’s the spirit!” Keahi exclaimed, jumping up in place. “Okay! Let’s do this! Alex, you and… Nel can organize the supplies, right? Then Tsuki and I can use this food and set us up some breakfast.”
“That sounds good to me,” Nelvana agreed.
They had only just begun their simple assigned tasks when Keahi sprang up again, flapping zir wings hurriedly to collect attention again before speaking.
“We should write a thank you letter for everyone! We could put it in the chest for Kangaskhan to find when she checks it for us!” Keahi suggested.
“That’s a very polite idea there, Keahi,” Tsuki hummed.
“Do we have enough time for it?” Keahi asked, looking to Alex.
Alex sighed, “yes, we do,” he answered with a soft smile. “Nel, I can handle the rest of repacking if you want to take up Keahi’s idea.”
“I… I think I’ll do that, thanks,” Nelvana replied, standing up and turning around to look through the chest again. “Do we have any paper? No wait, I found something we could use,” she said, bringing out a piece of paper that was torn on the side.
While it may have been hoped that they would be able to enter the dungeon before noon, it took slightly over an hour after getting up that morning for them to be fully prepared and ready to enter Magma Cavern. During all the preparation, the lava bubbled quietly nearby them, emitting such a heat that kept the group at bay while they worked. However, it wasn’t as overbearing as going through an active volcano, and so no one complained, except Tsuki once, and she was more suited to colder temperatures anyway.
Finally, they were ready to enter the dungeon. Team Galaxy stood at the mouth of the cave. The earlier excitement still motivating them and keeping stress at bay, but now standing right outside of the home of Groudon, nervousness began settling into all four of them. With silent nods of affirmation to one another, they entered Magma Cavern in a single filed line, Nelvana leading, followed by Keahi, Alex, and then Tsuki.
Instantly they were plunged into near pitch darkness, the only light source coming from the odd heated rock or a crack in the wall leaking magma. This caused the lineup to switch up early on, Tsuki taking the lead with her superior dark vision compared to any of the others. Nelvana and Alex may have had good low light vision, but it would only take them so far in a place with next to no light sources. Keahi tried experimenting with trying to light various objects to use as a torch, but didn’t find much luck and was forced to stick extra closely to the others to avoid accidently getting lost.
Many of their first minutes in this dungeon was met with no foes, simply the team aimlessly wandering through the tunnels, trying to get to the stairs. Their first opponent, when it did show up, was a nidoking, who cut off the group in the middle, driving its horn into the wall beside Keahi. The torchic yelped in surprise at this narrowly missed move, and retaliated with zir beak, pecking the larger pokemon’s leg. The others swarmed in to help too, Nelvana reacting quickly by headbutting the nidoking, and Alex finished it by slashing its hide with the leaves on his arms. Nidoking fell to the ground, defeated, and disappeared in a beam of light which threw everyone off with the sudden brightness. Tsuki, who had been preparing an ice beam to attack the nidoking with, let the frosty attack melt away in her mouth before continuing down the path again.
“That was a nidoking… he wasn’t as strong as I expected him to be,” Tsuki commented quietly.
“Maybe we’re stronger than we thought!” Keahi exclaimed hopefully.
Alex smirked, “maybe so… but still keep your guard up, that could have been close.”
    “Of course,” Keahi murmured.
So, they continued. After that surprise encounter with the nidoking, the team discovered that most of the other pokemon in this dungeon were of similar strength, and could be handled, especially if they kept ganging up against the foes to overwhelm them.
At around the third floor, Nelvana stopped walking and tapped her club against the ground to let everyone know that she wasn’t walking with them anymore.
“Hey, everyone pause for a minute does anyone hear something?” Nelvana questioned.
The others stopped as well, listening for what the cubone could have heard. Faintly, towards a wall, there was the sound of something whizzing through the air, and then hitting the wall and clacking onto the ground. This repeated again, confirming that they were all hearing the same thing from the same place.
    “What is it…?” Keahi whispered.
“There’s a tunnel in that direction, let’s check, but carefully…” Tsuki replied.
Going quiet again, the quartet crept over to the mentioned tunnel, and peaked around to the other side of the wall towards the source of the noise… a sandshrew throwing iron thorns at the wall. The dungeon pokemon turned as the group snuck by, and angled its shot to try to hit Tsuki. She easily batted it out of the air as if it was a toy, before pouncing forward with quick attack, making the sandshrew faint swiftly before they could try throwing more thorns at the group.
“Were… were they trying to hit us through the wall?” Nelvana questioned, holding back a snicker. “We aren’t ghost-types…”
“And they weren’t throwing even rocks,” Alex added with a chuckle of his own.
“Hm… I suppose they were just high strung?” Tsuki murmured, “I’ll admit, I haven’t seen a dungeon pokemon do this before.”
“Wait, you can throw rocks through walls at ghost-types?” Keahi asked.
“Let’s walk and talk,” Alex prompted, waiting for everyone to oblige before answering Keahi’s question. “Sometimes ghost-types like to hide inside walls, which limits your options on how to attack them. Now, this only works in dungeons, remember, but if you have some gravelerocks, you can hit the ghost with ‘em. I don’t know why, but it works,” he explained, “maybe the dungeon pities us,” he joked.
“Oh, huh! That’s weird!” Keahi giggled, “off topic but… I don’t think I can be gender neutral any longer. I was feeling like this yesterday, but I didn’t bring it up because I was kinda thinking I was just tired… and I don’t know what I want to be now.”
“You have been male recently, maybe it’s back to that?” Alex suggested.
Keahi shrugged, “worth a try. I’ll see how it fits.”
“Let us know if you need a change again,” Nelvana hummed.
Keahi ended up needing a change again not long after that, deciding that being male wasn’t going to work out, and was getting too uncomfortable to think of themself that way, switching over to try out being female again.
They pushed forward through the dungeon, finding the stairs as quickly as they could and climbing down to the next floor. Avoiding most combat if possible, in favor of speed. Fortunately, they were able to find the stairs quite easily on most floors. As they continued, the heat slowly grew around them, and while they didn’t realize at first, the walls and ground were cracked even more, revealing more burning lava beneath them. On the other hand, it was certainly brighter now, and they didn’t have to worry about getting separated in the darkness.
At about the tenth floor it occurred to them that they hadn’t had to deal with even a single monster house yet, even though those were supposed to start appearing two floors ago, according to the kecleons’ notes. When pointed out, this information received mixed reactions.
“I don’t like this,” Alex muttered, “it feels like something worse is being set up for us. I know, it should be a good thing that we’ve avoided all monster houses so far, but with the warning we got from Octillery…”
“Well… we have been trying to avoid that sort of thing and just find the stairs, so maybe we’re just better at that than expected?” Keahi suggested.
“As simple as that sounds, Keahi’s idea is the most likely outcome. Dungeons aren’t sentient, they may be mysterious, powerful, and dangerous, but they can’t plot against us that strategically,” Tsuki agreed.
    “I hope so…” Nelvana murmured.
“Maybe it only has limited energy to organize a monster house, and it used it all trying to…” Keahi trailed off, hoping that her point was clear without having to go on.
“Maybe we’re just overthinking this… We should keep going. Whatever happens, happens. We can’t control the dungeon,” Nelvana sighed.
“Very well, let us continue,” Tsuki hummed, heading down the path.
Continue they did, going down, down, deeper into the earth. White hot rocks now decorated some pathways, and even blocking them off entirely. The walls around them were looking more charred black than the desert fire shades they had started out as. The heat, was bearable, but passing over to being extremely uncomfortable for some. Of course, the dungeon pokemon weren’t going to let up, so neither would they.
One magmar in particular got a lucky shot, blasting a stream of flames in Alex and Tsuki’s direction. Alex easily jumped out of the way, and Tsuki attempted to as well, but being less fast and being closer to the magmar anyway, her fur got grazed by the flames, and lit up. Tsuki yelped, and began jumping around, trying to get the fire off of her before it burned through her long fur to the skin, but the fire only burned brighter and flickered around wildly in the air. Nelvana swiftly knocked out the magmar, and turned to the panicked absol, who was prancing around too much for Alex to try giving her a rawst berry.
“Tsuki! Stop, drop, and roll!” Nelvana yelled.
Tsuki was too frantic to think too much about this command, and dropped to the ground, rolling around back and forth. The flames were suffocated, and extinguished in a stream of thick smoke and disappointed sizzling. Tsuki finally slowed down, and sat up, shaking herself off and panting. She looked back at the spot that had caught flame, where there was now an odd patch of short, charred hairs among the normal, long, white ones.
“…thank you, Nelvana. That could have been worse,” Tsuki said.
“Yeah! Good thinking!” Keahi added, “I’ve never heard of that saying before, but it worked.”
Nelvana looked over at Alex, wondering if he had any input on how she may have learned that expression.
Alex shrugged, “it’s not a future thing, I haven’t heard of it either, actually. Must be a human thing.”
    “Oh!” Nelvana hummed.
“Regardless of where you learned it, it was very useful. Thank you again,” Tsuki responded.
With that sudden and quick scare over, Tsuki had a piece of rawst berry, and they continued through the dungeon. Fire-types stopped appearing a few floors later, so they didn’t have to put that saying to use again.
Nearly ten more floors after they had first commented on the lack of monster houses, that as they all entered a large room, various pokemon dropped in from above to attack them.
“Monster house!” Nelvana yelled reflexively, despite everyone coming to this realization as well.
The pokemon quickly swarmed around the team, leaving each member with at least two or three foes to deal with at once.
Nelvana backed back into the corridor they had come from, giving her less space to dodge, but also forcing any pokemon that wanted to fight her to line up. She wacked her club on the wall loudly in an attempt to gain more attention before attacking. She threw her club at the line, using bonemerang to see if she could split up her damage. The first throw was successful with this plan, knocking out the golem in front of her before it could use a move like magnitude or self destruct, and hitting the grimer behind it before returning to her. The grimer, who was looking slightly more solid than typical of their kind, was not knocked out, but was too slow to make it to Nelvana before she threw the bone again, finishing them and the pokemon behind them off.
Keahi carried no super-effective moves herself, and simply did her best to hold off the foes around her and weaken them as much as possible until one of her teammates would be able to help. Fortunately, one of the pokemon that had originally approached her was drawn towards the sound of Nelvana’s club clanking around, leaving the torchic with only another grimer and a sandslash to deal with.
Sandslash dove forward, claws outstretched to attack. Keahi scampered away to the side, feeling her speed grow as the battle activated her ability. Wanting to fight back, she felt the familiar warmth grow inside her, burning with energy, she charged the flamethrower in her beak before letting it loose at the grimer, who was using harden to try increasing their defense, which didn’t aid them in protecting them against the special elemental move, and was defeated. The sandslash was still up and fighting, and got in a slash on the torchic. She jumped back in pain and surprise, glaring at the foe, and blasted another flamethrower at them to try and keep them at bay. Sandslash skidded about a foot back, but dug their hind claws into the ground. They growled at Keahi, who glanced quickly at the others, still occupied with their own battles…
Alex, up against all these rock and ground-types, was doing much better than the torchic. A simple leaf blade took care of most of his opponents, and as long as he paid attention to his surroundings, he would be fine.
Tsuki was forced to use her ice beam, something she had been trying to save energy for throughout the dungeon. She froze a rhydon with this move, and followed it up with façade, breaking the ice but knocking out the enemy. Spinning around to face another grimer, she zoomed forward with a quick attack followed by night slash, once again making short work of the foe.
Keahi looked back at the sandslash, who wasn’t going to pause any longer. They lunged again, and she scurried out of the way again. This game of keep away couldn’t last forever, and deep down Keahi wanted to beat this sandslash herself. Everyone else had been able to handle themselves, why couldn’t she? Energy filled her, and she wanted to rush at the sandslash, so she did. Hurtling forward faster than she could ever remember doing, she rammed into the ground-type, knocking it out while doing so.
Nelvana was done with her line up of opponents, and she peaked back into the room to see where she could help out, relived to see everyone well and having defeated the monster house.
Keahi watched the light from the sandslash’s defeat disappear, and grinned excitedly, “guys! I think I learned quick attack!”
“It did look like that from here, good job,” Tsuki purred, “I didn’t know torchics could learn that move too, it’ll prove an especially handy move.”
“Good job Keahi! And everyone! That monster house was cleared out in no time!” Nelvana cheered, grouping up with everyone else.
Alex exhaled and smiled, “yes, that went surprisingly well. Let’s hope that this keeps up,” he hummed, now let’s keep going, the stairs are across the room.”
“Alright! Let’s keep going!” Keahi exclaimed, hurrying over to the mentioned stairs, energized by the excitement from their success and her learning a new move.
They never did encounter another monster house, but now no one complained about what was now clearly just good fortune and exploring skills. They did encounter some onixes on a few floors, but after the initial surprise at a pokemon of that size, they learned that onix had the attack of, as Nelvana could describe, “a wet paper bag”.
Finally, they entered the safe room at the twenty-third floor. This room was thrown into darkness like on the early floors, as it lacked the glowing magma rocks that the quartet had let their eyes grow accustomed to. Keahi let out a gentle ember across the stones to give the room some limited light for any time they would spend in here. In the center of the room, stood the largest statue they had seen yet, this one of Groudon, their clawed hands stretched in front of them and a snarl on their petrified expression. This sculpted rock took up most of the small room, and including the stand it was on it nearly touched the ceiling.
Nelvana took a step towards the statue, a sense of familiarity washing over her the longer she stared at it. Alex stepped up beside her, crouching by the statue, a thin smile stretching onto his expression.
“I bet this one is bigger than the one at the lake,” Alex mused, “you recognize it?”
Nelvana nodded in response, unsure of how she was even feeling about this, and how to respond. Keahi joined the pair, lighting another ember and staring up at the statue in awe.
“Woah… is that what Groudon looks like?” Keahi asked.
Alex nodded, “yeah, they’re a pretty big brute.”
Tsuki walked up closer to the statue, walking around it to give it a proper look. It was in the same condition as most of the statues they had seen in their travels, worn and dusty with age. She was quiet as she studied it, and when she finished, she turned back to the team.
“Well then, unless we have anything to do here, we should finish this dungeon up. There’s only three floors left to go, after all,” she told them.
“Agreed,” Alex responded, standing back up and dusting himself off. “Let’s keep going.”
“Three floors to go!” Keahi repeated, leading everyone to the other end of the room, and yelping. “There aren’t any stairs here!”
“Huh, looks like calling it Magma Cavern Pit is more literal than I thought,” Nelvana commented, joining Keahi at the edge of a large hole. “Wanna try lighting it up to see how deep it is?”
Keahi nodded, sending another ember down the pit. Everyone watched as it fell down a bit over five feet before extinguishing on the floor stone.
“Oh, that isn’t that bad,” Nelvana hummed, “let’s go!”
Nelvana then jumped down the pit without hesitance, landing with a soft thud on the next floor of the dungeon. She gave them a sign that she was alright, giving them a cheerful yell and tapping her club against the wall. Keahi laughed, and hopped in after her partner. Alex sighed, and muttered something along the lines of “stupid human recklessness,” but followed as well. Tsuki wasn’t far behind, and everyone landed down together with ease on the stone ground.
“Here we come Groudon! We’re going to beat you!” Keahi cheered, leading the group through the tunnels of the floor.

A Little Bit Sweet
How the fuck does one make up titles when there’s no fucking plot?
Anyone remember the fic I said I’d post like a week ago but never got around to? Yeah. It’s this one. Nothing special at all as well, just plotless bullshit. But at least it’s Something
Characters: Marvin, Jackie
Word count: 1.3k
Warnings: none. Marvelsepticeye.
“You’re horrible at this.”
“Just because I’m not doing it like you would, it doesn’t mean I’m doing it wrong.”
“You keep wasting your turns!”
“I’m no-”
“You’re gonna die again.”
“Oh, just shut up.”
“Fine.”
Jackie laughs at Marvin’s comical attempts at appearing mad, but he averts his eyes from the pokémon game he’s playing and decides to play along. He leans more into Marvin, who’s sitting behind him, legs on either side and arms wrapped around him, and nuzzles his head back against his shoulder. He laughs again when Marvin huffs in protest.
“There’s no need to be like that,” Jackie starts, grinning when Marvin turns his head away. “Aw, come on, babe,” he coos sweetly, and Marvin groans. “I’ll let you name the next one I catch, if you’d like.”
Marvin turns his head to look at him again, trying his best to look stern and resentful. But it’s really hard, with Jackie smiling up at him like that and lying in his arms, so warm and cosy and lovely. “Stop trying to bribe me, asshole.”
Jackie snorts and then bumps their foreheads together. He laughs again quietly when Marvin nuzzles his nose against his, his mock offended expression melting into a loving smile. He squeezes Jackie closer again with a sigh, his eyes slipping shut as he rests his forehead against his.
“Do you even need to be bribed?” Jackie teases, not like he has any complaints.
Marvin considers moving on to just cuddling peacefully again and busying himself with pressing kisses into Jackie’s neck, but that comment makes him decide against it. So instead he pulls back and does his best to stare Jackie down - which is admittedly very hard to do when the person you’re trying to stare down is looking at you like you’re their whole world.
“You seem to be forgetting that I’m a powerful magician, and I could easily destroy you and everything you love,” he makes his voice as serious as he possibly can, but it’s met with deaf ears apparently. Jackie turns back to his game halfway through the sentence, awfully comfortable and content and not at all intimidated. He seems a lot more interested in just making his character run circles in the long grass, looking for pokémon.
“Not when everything I love very much includes you,” Jackie hums without looking up, voice soft despite the teasing tone to it.
Marvin can’t help but smile at that. He chuckles a little and presses his nose into Jackie’s hair, planting a kiss onto his head. “Oh no,” he says in a voice that holds no distress at all. “You have found my one weakness.”
“And what would that be?”
Eyes shut and a soft smile on his lips, Marvin hums contently. “You.”
Jackie snorts, and then laughs properly. His shoulders and chest shake with it, and it only makes Marvin smile more. He’s so in love with this big, lanky idiot, who appreciates his shitty humour and puts too much emphasis on status moves in pokémon.
“Wow, I thought I was the one with the cheesy shit,” Jackie teases, laughter finally calming.
“Oh, don’t worry, I do definitely blame you entirely.”
Jackie shakes his head, nuzzling back against Marvin again. “Nah, I’m pretty sure that was some original, patented Marvin the Magnolia stuff right there. I have nothing to do with that.”
“Magnolia? Really? That’s the best you could do?” Marvin shoots back, sounding unimpressed, but then he shrugs and nonchalantly presses another kiss to Jackie’s head. “Well, the inspiration did come from you…”
Jackie finally gets into another battle (and he did win the one Marvin said he would lose, just for the record), and to Marvin’s relief uses an actual attack in the first turn. He doesn’t look away from the screen as he responds. “Oh, am I your muse now?”
“Hmm, I mean,” he presses his cheek against the side of Jackie’s head and watches him play with one eye closed. “I do try drawing you a lot. Emphasis on try, but y’know...the intentions are there.”
“Stop talking shit about yourself or I’m gonna punch you,” Jackie warns, waving a finger in the air for emphasis. Then he curses under his breath when he accidentally uses the wrong move and the game kindly infroms him that it didn’t do shit. “You’re ‘not very effective’.”
Marvin presses another kiss into Jackie’s hair, trying his best not to laugh. “Yeah, you tell ‘em, babe,” he mumbles. He finally starts laughing when Jackie tries to jab him with his shoulder, grumbling at him to shut up.
“Stop it,” Jackie whines when Marvin just won’t stop giggling into his hair. He cranes his neck, pushing Marvin’s head away and looking at him accusingly. “Stop laughing at my pain, you absolute monster.”
“Wow, I’m just not allowed to have any fun, huh?”
“Of course you’re not, what did you think?” Jackie deadpans, and it takes all his willpower not to smile like an idiot when Marvin snorts at that. “Your only purpose here is to be my personal pillow, not to enjoy yourself or some shit. Jesus.”
Marvin doesn’t stop laughing, even as he watches Jackie roll his eyes at him disapprovingly. His serious expression melts into a soft smile fairly quickly anyway. And when Marvin shakes his head at him fondly, he gives him a wide, proud grin that makes his eyes squint into thin lines.
“What, you don’t like my joke?”
“You’re such an asshole.”
“Well,” Jackie says lazily, stopping to adjust his position a bit, making Marvin groan in protest when his elbow winds up getting in closer relationship with his ribs for a moment. “It’s usually you who’s being a shit. I gotta get you back for it sometimes,” he looks awfully proud of himself as he waits for Marvin’s response. But instead of a mock-offended or witty remark like he expects, Marvin’s response is to sneak a hand under his shirt and fuck, that’s really cold. “Jesus fucking-...fuck! What are you...No, you stop that!”
Marvin giggles loudly at the absolutely wonderful reaction. He squeezes Jackie closer to himself, then finally withdraws his hand from under his shirt and even smooths out the fabric again afterwards.
“How the fuck are your hands so cold, what the fuck...” Jackie groans, neck twisted a little so that he can stare up at his boyfriend accusingly.
“Magic, duh.”
“That’s cheating.”
“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that,” Marvin hums, voice teasing and confident, but without much bite to it. He raises an eyebrow when he realises Jackie is still staring at him angrily. “Don’t you have a game to play?”
Jackie just huffs in response and turns back to his game he’d left off mid-battle. Marvin chuckles at him fondly and watches him do his thing over his shoulder again. One of his hands idly draws little patterns into Jackie’s stomach through his shirt, luckily without magically making his hand cold this time. He’s convinced peace has been restored that easily.
“You know what? When I get my groudon, I’m naming it after you,” Jackie comments offhandedly once the wild pokémon he’d been fighting faints and he moves on with his game. He feels Marvin pressing a kiss against his temple, and he tilts his head his way just a bit as if asking for another. Marvin laughs at him, but gives him another kiss.
“Why?”
Jackie grins. “Because it’s big, grumpy, and sleeps for hundreds of years.”
Marvin throws his head back and laughs loudly. Jackie can feel his chest heaving with it against his back, and it makes him really happy for some reason. “Wow, I thought it was gonna be nice.”
“Well,” Jackie says, resuming his game like nothing ever happened. “Get rekt, nerd.”
“Says the one with the glasses and flannels.”
“Jesus, do you ever shut up?”

Winter Solstice
I tried to add a bit more content and culture to Mt Pyre
Anna woke up to some rustling. She blinked her eyes awake. The clock in the corner of the room glowed 4:45
"Rosemary..?" Anna asked quietly as she sat up.
"Ah gods, sorry I woke you up," Rosemary apologized.
"What are you doing?" She squinted into the darkness and saw Rosemary was packing her backpack. "Where are you going at 5 in the morning?"
"I'm gonna catch the sunrise at Mount Pyre," Rosemary said as she shouldered her bag. "You wanna come with me?"
"Sure," Anna agreed as she got out of bed. "Isn't today the solstice? Sunrise isn't for a couple hours."
"It's not exactly a short ride over there," Rosemary shrugged.
"Oh, are we...are we flying there..?" Anna asked nervously.
"It's the fastest way to get there. Would you rather we drive? I'd have to go get the car,"
"Ah...no, no it's okay. It's okay, I'll be fine." Anna pulled her coat on over her dress.
“Okay,” Rosemary responded, trying to sound convinced.
Outside, Rosemary hitched her bag onto the back of Flygon’s saddle. Rosemary gestured for Anna to get on. Anna pushed her earmuffs closer to her ears, then sheepishly hiked up her skirt and got in the saddle. She squeezed the handles near Flygon’s neck. Rosemary pulled her goggles over her eyes.
“Okay, hang on,” Rosemary grunted as she more or less hopped onto Flygon’s back. The Pokémon groaned. The saddle was not intended for two people. Rosemary shoved her boots into the pockets on the sides of her bag. She grabbed the top of the saddle and pulled herself up, over Anna.
“Let’s go buddy!” Flygon’s wings vibrated intensely, and they took off from the ground.
It was starting to snow was they landed on the Mt. Pyre dock. The girls stretched their legs; Rosemary returned Flygon to his PokéBall.
“It looks like the entrance to a Johto shrine!” Anna said,
“It does, doesn’t it?”
Both of them bowed before passing under the arch way. Anna took Rosemary’s hand as they headed up the stairs.
Snow fell silently on the mountain. In the distance, they could occasionally hear the soft sound of bells. Half-way up the mountain, weathered grave markers could be seen here and there in the grass. A moving shadow out of the corner of her eye made Anna gasp and grab Rosemary’s arm.
A little further up the mountain, they started to hear a tinkling sound different from the Chimecho bells. A faint light appeared through the fog.
“What is that..?” Anna whispered. She tightened her grip on Rosemary’s hand.
“Nothing that’ll hurt you,” Rosemary assured her, “probably a monk,” she added when Anna did not seem convinced. They kept walking. The noise became louder and the light, closer.
“Oh, good morning ladies,” Tom greeted them as he came close enough that they could see him through the fog. His pink hair was bright against the grey surroundings. He carried a monk’s staff; the four rings on it had been making the noise the girls heard. Tom’s Vulpix followed him, around her neck she wore a rope with a bell. Her warm body gave off a faint glow in the cold fog.
“Hey Tom,” Rosemary greeted him.
“You guys must be the visitors we saw walking up. I came down to escort you safely to the shrine,” Tom explained, gesturing up the stairs. The group kept walking.
“Oh! Are you a Channeler? I had no idea,” Anna asked.
“Ah, no, not really,” Tom told her. “We don’t really have Channelers in Hoenn. I’m more like a monk.” He shook his staff. “I calm ghost Pokémon, and protect people from them. And make sure people are respectful during their visit.”
“The shrine at the summit houses the Blue and Red Orbs,” Rosemary explained, “No one is sure how long Tom’s mom’s family has been taking care of the shrine, but it’s most likely since the shrine was built - after Rayquaza returned to the sky.”
“The Blue and Red Orbs, orbs connected to Kyorge and Groudon, right..?” Anna asked. Tom and Rosemary nodded. “It’s interesting how different your legends are here.”
It had stopped snowing, though a light dusting was left on the ground. The sky started to lighten up as sunrise approached.
“As we approach the main shrine - not that I think you’ll be rowdy - but I’m required to ask you to refrain from talking and to be respectful,” Tom informed them, trying not to sound so much like a tour guide, “not only to the spirits and the leviathans but to the few visitors we have besides yourselves this morning.”.
Wind-chimes that looked like Chimecho waved gently in the breeze. They walked up the final steps into a Johto-style shrine.  Tom pointed to the far corner with his staff, “there’s an offering box in the corner. The statue directly ahead can be used for offerings or prayers to Groudon and Kyogre,” he pointed again with his staff to a gold statue. The leviathans were facing each other; the whole statue made sort of a circle, with Kyogre below Groudon. Behind the statue, there was a window through which the shrine at the summit could be seen.
“The stairs lead down into the interior graves,” Tom continued, “There is a small shrine at the bottom of the stairs on every floor for general offerings to the deceased, or you may find a specific grave.”
The girls nodded that they understood.
“And if you’ll follow Vulpix into the eastern room there, there’s a large window through which you can best see the sunrise,” Tom said as Vulpix wandered off towards the room. “There should be seats in there, and I think there’s a boiler with hot water for tea.” Rosemary clapped him on the shoulder in thanks. “I think my mom just put your flowers in there too,” Tom added, “if they’re not there yet, I’ll have her bring them over.”
“What are the flowers for?” Anna asked as she sat down in front of a large window.
“You’ll see,” Rosemary said, handing her a cup of tea.
Fog crept up around the bottom of the window. In the distance, Mt. Chimney billowed smoke and ash. The sky filled with oranges and pinks as the sun rose over the horizon. Mt. Chimney became a big shadow; rays of light filtered through the ash. A flock of Wingull flew by, their shadows stretched out as they flew past the sun.
Rosemary stood up from her chair. She grabbed a cardboard box from the corner of the room and shouldered it. There was a Cleanse Tag taped to the box. Anna scrambled out of her seat and followed Rosemary into the main room and down the stairs.
The cold cave was eerily quiet. Occasionally, distant sounds almost like human crying could be heard. The room was filled with rows of graves.
“Could you hold this?” Rosemary said, handing Anna the box. The box was a lot lighter than Anna thought. Rosemary pulled a handful of white roses out of the box.
Facing the first gravestone in the row, Rosemary bent down and placed a rose in front of it. She stood there for a few more seconds, then stepped over to the next gravestone and did the same thing. Anna watched, holding the box of flowers, as Rosemary went down each row of graves and placed a flower on each one. Some of the graves already had a flower or whole bouquets on them, but most of them had nothing before Rosemary laid her flowers down.
They headed down the stairs to the next level.
Rosemary did the same thing for the graves here. Anna looked around the room. She saw a small Shuppet in front of a gravestone. It looked like it was crying. She felt bad for it, but she was afraid to go over there; it was a ghost Pokémon after all. She heard the sound of a monk’s staff. Startled, the Shuppet looked like it wanted to run away, but it stayed in front of the grave. Anna watched as Tom knelt down next to it, said something, and held his hand out to the Pokémon. The Shuppet started crying more and buried it’s face in Tom’s shirt. Tom picked it up, and carried it upstairs.
The girls headed down the stairs to the next level.
On the fourth floor, Anna set the box of flowers down. Both of them took a handful of flowers. Rosemary smiled as Anna started putting flowers down on the first row of graves; she started on the second.
They headed down the stairs to the next level.
There were less graves here than the previous floors. They were a lot older; some were starting to fall apart. Rosemary stood in front of a gravestone, a rose in her fist at her side.
“Hardly anyone comes down here,” she said quietly. “I doubt there are a whole lot of people or Pokémon alive who remember these souls anymore.” She knelt down and placed her rose on the grave.
“Well...” Anna said, “maybe no one remembers them, but you’re thinking about them and bringing them flowers, which should bring them some peace.”
Rosemary smiled. “A long long time ago, my grandfather had a Sceptile. That Pokémon meant the world to him. Sceptile usually live a long time too, but when it died, grandfather was either too proud or too foolish to talk to anyone about how it was effecting him. Sceptile never really die, I don’t think any grass types really do. The seeds on a Sceptile’s back continue to grow. Grandfather buried him near where my parents’ house was eventually built.” She pulled another rose out of the box.
“The tree that grew was beautiful. It would flower in the spring and grow little berries. The only time grandfather would talk about Sceptile was when he was under the tree with me. He would carve me little figures out of its wood.” Rosemary fiddled with the rose in her hand. “One day, without telling anyone, mother had the tree cut down and totally up-rooted.”
“That’s awful,” Anna whispered.
“She hated that tree,” Rosemary laughed a little at the memory. “She said she thought it was an eyesore, I’m not sure the actual reason she hated it. Grandfather nearly had a heart attack when he found out. He stopped visiting, and died in his sleep a couple weeks later.” She noticed she had torn up the rose in her hand and got a new one to place at the grave now in front of her. “I’m the only one who remembers grandfather’s Sceptile and I never even knew it.”
“But you do remember,” Anna said, wiping a tear from Rosemary’s cheek. Rosemary hadn’t even noticed she was crying. “And I’m sure that makes both your grandfather and Sceptile very happy.”
“Let’s get out of here,” Rosemary said, wiping her eyes, “This place makes me depressed.”
The girls climbed back up the stairs to the shrine. Rosemary handed the empty box to a brown haired lady, who Anna assumed was Tom’s mom. She tried to get Rosemary to take a bag of sweets.
Tom approached Anna, and they watched the other two talk. “She told you the Sceptile story, didn’t she?” Tom asked. Anna nodded.
“I think she thinks about that Sceptile a lot,” Tom said solemnly. “She doesn’t want anyone’s partner to ever feel forgotten.”
“I think you’re right.” Anna smiled.
