I did another Doubtsower guitar tracking session last week, recording parts for my 3rd LP - solo session in a practice room at Musicbox Cardiff. Slightly different approach on this album compared to the previous two (which mainly featured amp sims, but also included a variety of amps recorded in the house) - this one is all amp-miced. Was nice to get the Marshall out again - absolute beast of an amp. Excited with progress and looking forward to getting back to work on it.

Sometimes it feels like it would be better to hit the guitar to the wall. This day is that day. Trying to record guitar parts, but nothing seems to work out... It feels sticky to play, and it just doesn't work out.. Feels like the guitar is fucked up all the time.. Etc. You can notice that my hand just got numbed and the playing feels like if you'd walk in the swamp, every step feels heavy and annoying.. The only cure for that is to close up everything and focus on something totally different. That's it for today. Sometimes it's like this. Do you like heavy rhythm guitars? Than you might be interested in this topic: How I like to pan heavy rhythm guitars 😉 I started panning two guitars hard left and hard right. Do not just double one recording to achieve two guitars. This will not help, except you will stretch the time alignment between them both and make them sound different, for example by pitching them both a little different or using different guitars amp modulations. The better way would be to record the same guitar twice. One for the left side and one for the right. So this will already sound great but it feels like there is still some power and energy missing. It will now help to add a third guitar track in the center. Either you get a third recording or take one of the recordings you already have and make it sound a little different again. The next step is important: treat them with slightly different EQ's to make sure the guitars are not overlapping each other too much, this would make your mix muddy. Cut the low lows on the left and right guitars and the top end of the center guitar. Now send all three tracks to a group channel and if needed shape the overall guitar sounds to taste with another eq and compression for example. This way this three guitars will make a huge fundamental impact in your song. By the way: if you record electric guitars through a DI box straight into your interface it will help to at least mimic a guitar amp speaker with an equalizer. An average guitar amp speaker usually has a frequency respons from about 100 to 8000 hz. With this in mind use an EQ with a high pass filter at about 100 hz and a low pass filter at about 8000 hz BUT do not just copy these numbers - set them to taste and rely on your ears.
