any recommended stim toys? i need some new ones, especially ones that would be discreet at school

Glad you asked this when I was in the mood to organize my stuff! Here are some suggestions I have after careful listening as I used them!

Good fidget/stim toys for school:

1. Sugar balls

There are big, small, and average types of sugar balls. Basically, they're balls filled with clear glue/thick gel and when squished they rise slowly. Also, they're usually soft when squished slowly, and resistant when squished hard. (Definitely the case with nee doh nice cubes and gumdrops. Regular sugar balls are easier to squish in general, in my opinion.)

There can be sounds when your fingers stick to them slightly and are pulled away (honestly not noticable with the slightest background noise so not a big deal probably), but if you put one in your pocket, not only is it hidden, but it's still the same level of satisfying from squishing it!

2: small foam squishies

A classic! Squishies come in all kinds of sizes, including small enough to go on keychains and fit into a pocket with no issue! Super quiet, and if you see them in store, more than likely you can test their firmness and pick which one suits your taste the best!

3: worry stones and the like

A worry stone is basically any object with a smooth surface for sliding your thumb against. For me, a piece of jewelry I found on my grandmas floor has legit no resistance and is super calming to slide my thumb around on. Fidget cubes also have a worry stone side, and sometimes even erasers give the same effect! (To me anyway. Any surface that's calming and small and easy to feel fits, as they show)

OH and fidget cubes have two silent buttons to press, if you enjoy that!

4: silly putty/thinking putty

Depending on how its played with, putty can be super quiet and also not a big distraction as long as there isnt tons of it. (maybe more dull colors are better for class?) But, if you play with it with enough energy to cause bubbles, those bubbles will pop when its pinched or squished in a certain way. A good alternative though: KNEADED ERASERS. They're like putty but a slightly different texture and should be more fine for class.

5: hedge balls

Hedge balls (this one very firm with a good thick, solid center) when squeezed, apply pressure to your skin with their little prickles. This pressure can help people, and I do believe people can also pick at the prickles! They arent for everyone, but who knows? If someone didnt know what they were, maybe they now think they need one!

Ch. 29: Happy Birthday, Elliott

FRIDAY - FALL 5

In an exceedingly unexpected series of events, Achilles had been manhandled into bringing back to Stardew none other than Camille’s giant, fluffy cat. Her new boyfriend, she explained, had an allergy, and even though Achilles insisted that since poor, fluffy Voltaire was there first, Evan ought to suck it up and take some nasal spray, Camille had brushed him off. Ugh, that side of the family…

Well, he of course couldn’t leave Voltaire to the pound. And so Achilles had, as Camille knew he would, acquiesced. The two had had some great bonding time over the 8 hour drive; Voltaire was a well behaved gentleman and had sat very well over the bumpy roads.

Unfortunately, the same could not be said once they reached Stardew Valley. A lifelong city cat, Voltaire seemed to be having some trouble adapting to the half-tamed wilderness, meowing and hissing and skittering behind flower bushes and under bed frames. But Achilles had to cut him some slack; overnight, the cat had had to trade in thick wool rugs and the constant hum of air conditioners and fluorescent lighting for hardwood and the tweets of taunting birds.

But over the next few days, the cat had slowly regained his appetite, though in observing his daily march around the farmhouse, whiskers poised to the air, Achilles couldn’t help but think there was something very… uncat-like about Voltaire.

But perhaps what was most intriguing was that the cat seemed to be able to see the junimos, who had raced across the newly neatly tilled farm to greet Voltaire when Achilles had returned from Hyacinthia. They had gathered around him, bumping his fluffy fur with their rotund little gumdrop bodies and poking his tummy with their jabby little arms. To Achilles surprise, however, the cat merely gave them a sniff, giving one orange fellow a light tap with his paw before sauntering into the farmhouse. Interesting.

Nevertheless, he had bigger problems at hand.

Camille may not have come through with any tangible advice outside of “get a job, you fuck,” but reminiscing about not-so-dear, very-much-so dead Eddie Bloomsbury had driven Achilles to spend an entire afternoon meticulously crafting a whole series of talking points, a slide deck, and interactive activities for his elementary school visit.

He had stopped at a stationary store in Hyacinthia to pick up Elliott’s birthday gift, only to leave with an additional 20 notebooks and pens to gift to Penny’s third grade class. He was going to be the best damn guest speaker Meteor Elementary had ever had (which, in the grand scheme of the school’s guest speaker history, was not saying very much). The children would love him. Take that, Eddie Bloomsbury!

All that to say, he wasn’t doing a great job adhering to the new post-it note he had stuck to his mirror after his return from Hyacinthia.

Elliott had insisted on keeping any “natal festivities” small. After the camping retreat, he had been “on fire!” and “so close to the finish line!”—how could he afford any distractions at a time like this? Birthdays be damned! But Leah assured Achilles that Elliott, who probably hadn’t eaten anything outside of pomegranate seeds for the past week, would (or should) appreciate a small break, so they had made plans to surprise him with a casual dinner at the saloon.

They were waiting outside Elliott’s shack when something in the nearby sand caught their eye. A thin, gold chain embedded with sparkling sapphires was glittering from the shadows of a wreck of a rowboat (so unlike Alex’s…). Well. Definitely not Elliott’s bracelet. Achilles wasn’t an expert in jewelry, but he could tell this was well outside the man’s budget.

“Probably some tourist,” Leah suggested, running her fingers over the gems before handing it back to Achilles. “Willy’s got a lost and found if you want to leave it there.”  

“I don’t know…” It looked vaguely familiar as he turned it between his fingers. “I think it might be Haley’s, I’ll check with Emily.”

Leah shrugged as he pocketed it.

“My dear friends!” With an ear-splitting creak, the door to Elliott’s shack was flung open, and Elliott came bounding out, auburn hair tied in a messy, low ponytail over his shoulder, his fingers stained with blue ink.

“Happy birthday, Elliott!” sang Leah and Achilles as the man tightly embraced the two of them in one giant hug. The smell of eucalyptus instantly engulfed his nose, and it was nearly half a minute before Elliott stepped back and allowed them to breath the salty sea air surrounding them again.

On their way to the saloon, they ran into none other than a rather wan Penny who was watching Alex skip stones into the river with perhaps a little bit more exuberance and laughter than the activity typically elicited from him. Despite all her smiles, there seemed to be a permanent furrow carved between her brows.

Elliott must have picked up on her gloomier disposition as well, for he was quick to follow his wave with, “Miss Penny! Why don’t you join the three of us for dinner at the saloon; we would be honored to have you take part in our merrymaking! And, of course, you’re more than welcome, too, Alexander!”

At the latter sentence, Elliott shot Achilles a rather wily (and, in Achilles’ eyes, obvious) wiggle of his eyebrows, to which Achilles could only respond with open mouthed, vague indignation.

“My goodness, Achilles—once again, you have proven yourself to be a king among friends!”

Elliott had unwrapped Achilles’ gift—two premium duck feather quills that shimmered with a green blue iridescence, inkwells of blue and black ink, and a mini journal he had been working on with Leah (his idea, but she had taken the lead on execution) filled with small paintings, photographs, and short stories from their camping trip together.

“I will cherish these for the rest of my life,” Elliott said somberly, holding the items to his chest.

Outside of the gifts and the streamers Emily had taken it upon herself to hang in the private room Achilles had reserved, it was a casual, if jolly, affair among the small group. The company was good and the ale forever flowing, though only Elliott and Leah seemed to be partaking.

Even the mystery of the bracelet had come to a quick, happy conclusion. While taking dinner orders, Emily had confirmed it was indeed Haley’s (“She’s been looking all over for it! I’ll get it to her, thank you. Dunno how it got over by the rowboat…”).

“Achilles is going to be stopping by the classroom next week,” Penny shared during one of the few brief lulls in conversation. She very lightly set her hand on his arm. “He’s going to tell them about being a writer.”

A chorus of oooohs fluttered around the table.

“Excellent choice, excellent choice!” Elliott exclaimed, clapping Achilles on the back. “And such a wonderful idea! I’m sure your students are absolutely delighted at the opportunity to speak to a published author. They are incredibly lucky to have you, Penny! Or, shall I say, Miss Mellin!”

“Hear ye, hear ye,” cried Leah who was rather deep into her third flagon of ale. “Doing Yoba’s work, giving those Moonmist kids a proper education.”

“I bet I would’ve been a better reader if you had been my teacher, Pen,” Alex said, raising his cup after Leah’s toast as Penny blushed, eyes watering ever so slightly, and hurriedly excused herself for the restroom.

“You know,” Alex said, turning to Achilles once Elliott had resumed his conversation with Leah. “I would’ve killed for the opportunity to have you speak to me in third grade.”

“Bitch, I would’ve been 11. I’m talking to you now, that’s not good enough?”

“True…” Alex sighed, and folded his arms behind his head. “You know, actually, I take it back. Never meet your heroes kids, you’ll always be disappointed—”

“Get your ass out of here, you weren’t even originally invited to the party.”

After dinner, Achilles headed towards the center of town with Alex and Penny after bidding farewell and a final happy birthday to Elliott and Leah who made their way south.

The sun had set, but that didn’t stop Achilles from picking out a fallen recycling bin from outside the trailer Penny shared with her mom. Beer cans and bottles alike were spilling out from the bin, littering the patchy grass. And from behind a half-drawn curtain, he could just make out the shadow of Pam’s frenetic figure, her scratchy voice hollering hoarsely at something or another.  

There was a tinkle of glass being broken. The bursting static of an old TV.

“Oh…” Penny instinctively took a step back, stumbling into Alex who caught her and pulled her by the shoulders into his chest from behind.

“You want to come over, Penny?” he asked quickly. “Um. Grandma could probably use some help with some cookies…”

“Oh. Yes. That would be nice, happy to help…” Penny stepped forward to say farewell, but her eyes were glued to the ground and her arms folded tight against her chest.  “Uh, good seeing you tonight, Achilles. Thank you for letting me join.”

“You, too, Penny. I’ll see you Monday.”

Achilles watched as Alex, his arm around her shoulders, led Penny to 1 River Road as various thumps and crashes continued to emerge from the trailer.

Poor Penny…

He’d always been close to his mother. Still was, really, they tried to video chat at least once a week, even with her busy schedule. She, along with his father, had always been supportive. Had always stood by him, encouraged him, pushed him the few times he needed it, a shoulder to cry on the many times he’d needed that. He was lucky. They’d done everything right by him. So really, he hadn’t much of an excuse for turning out the abysmal way he did…

Don’t think about that.

He tucked the thought away, smothering it with a subpar whistled rendition of some unreleased Lizzie Grant song, and headed home.

Alright, so, while Jason has the temperament of a child who missed a nap 4x in a row, he can be surprisingly sweet when he wants to be.

He gives compliments like none other. There's always something new about you that he has to compliment. "Your skin looks exceptionally shiny today. Your eyes? Starlight. Your teeth are very pretty!" Just constant compliments.

Will call you things like "my sweetie pie," "gumdrop," "my darling sugar plum," and "my candy heart."

He likes to pick up on which ones you like most and are most receptive to because he'll use those the most on you.

He likes to sometimes lay down in bed with you and just compare hands, zoning out and smiling at you.

He will absolutely pamper and spoil you. Anything you want? He'll get it for you in a heartbeat. Jewelry, food, clothing, money, whatever you want.

If you're like, a college student or something he's gonna help you study and help you when midterms and finals season rolls around.

He will cook for you!! Jason is pretty good at cooking and ofc, baking.

A random prince fells in love at first sight with Yuu and, kinda like Eliza, immediately forces them to marry him. Yuu refuses and tries to fight back but the prince hypnotizes them with magic to make them more docile and make them believe they're in love and such. The first years gang, confused in the first place at why tf Yuu is suddenly accepting the wedding and acting so numb, discovers the deception and decides to crash into the party to save them and kick the prince's butt

Pre-Wedding Jitters

“HAAAAAH?! YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED?!”

None of the first years can believe it when you tell them of your engagement--especially Ace and Deuce.

“Who are you even getting hitched to?!” Ace demands to know, shaking you by the shoulders.

“My one true love,” you mumble back, a dazed look on your face. “Prince Charming...”

“...Prince Charming?” Jack repeats, brows knitting together. “That RSA alumnus that was at our last Magical Shift tournament? That Prince Charming?”

“Isn’t he the creep that was bothering you?” Deuce asks, wincing at the memory. “The guy that wouldn’t take no for an answer?”

“That’s the guy...” Epel mutters.

“THAT SCOUNDREL THAT PUT HIS HANDS ON YOU, WITHOUT CONSENT?!” Sebek looks like he’s about to pop a blood vessel.

“My one true love...” you repeat, oblivious to your friends’ comments.

“Something ain’t right here,” Ace declares. “You’re not pulling our leg, are you? Cuz if you are, this prank isn’t very funny!”

You continue to babble about your one true love, and how he is arranging the wedding as they speak. Is it just them, or do the first years see hearts in your pupils? Are you really that much in love?

The boys exchange exchange weary looks with one another and make a silent agreement to investigate further into this matter.

The week of the wedding, you set off to meet with your beloved husband-to-be.

Meanwhile, Sebek has stumbled across an old tome in the Diasomnia archives, detailing of a potent love poison--a poison which imparts emotional numbness and heart-shaped pupils on those afflicted with it.

An “I do” and a kiss at the wedding altar will make the effects permanent.

Sebek nearly tears off the doors to Ace, Deuce, Jack, and Epel’s rooms to deliver the news. “GET UP!” he roars. “WE HAVE A WEDDING TO CRASH!”

But there’s only a few days left at this point, and there’s no time to find transportation to the venue on such short notice. They’ll never make it in time, even on Epel’s horses.

“Wait--I think I know a guy,” Deuce interrupts their panicking. He turns to his rival with a wicked smile. “Ace-kun--remember what Trey-senpai said the other day?”

A similar smile spreads onto Ace’s face. “Oh yeah, Deuce-kun...he knows the Muffin Man. The Muffin Man that lives on Drury Lane.”

The Crashing

You’re dressed in a tiara and sparkling jewelry, donning a diamond dotted gown and a crystal netted veil, making your way down the aisle.

The music is a wedding march in C minor, but you can’t seem to properly appreciate it. Sounds seems to filter in one year and go right out the other.

Your mind is hazy, and you can’t seem to think or see anything besides your husband-to-be, who awaits for you at the end of the aisle with a massive grin.

All of a sudden, a knight bursts into the venue and scrambles to your husband-to-be’s side.

Prince Charming seems to be annoyed and tries to usher the knight away--but the knight is suddenly in hysterics about a giant gingerbread man attacking the castle.

A monstrous roar fills the venue, and the entire place rattles (as a flaming gumdrop button pelts the castle). The guests--and the prince--panic. The impact is followed by loud shouting.

It is Sebek who is perched on the giant gingerbread man’s shoulder, yelling orders over the wind, Ace and Deuce on the other shoulder. Epel and Jack are racing on a white horse beside them.

The knights are starting to close the drawbridge--but the gingerbread man grabs it and pries it open, just long enough for Ace, Deuce, Epel, and Jack to slip in.

“GO, GO, GO!” Sebek shouts after them. Already, he has his magical pen out and is preparing a lightning spell. Sparks fly as Sebek lets his magic loose.

Knights rush to stop the incoming intruders--Epel hops off the horse and stands between them and his friends.

“O-Oi...! What are you--”

But to everyone’s surprise, the knights skid to a stop and begin cooing at how cute Epel is.

That makes it easy for Epel to knock three of them out with powerful jets of water from his magical pen.

Jack groans and dismounts, also drawing his pen. He glances at Ace and  Deuce. “...Go without us. We’ll keep them back.”

Ace whips up powerful winds to blow the doors to the wedding venue open--and together, he and Deuce storm in, fire roaring in their blood.

“We’re here to pick up our friend!” they announce in unison, pointing their magical pens accusingly at Prince Charming.

For all of his bragging and hollering, Prince Charming is actually very weak. Deuce sprints right up to him to deck him in the face, then buries him and his remaining knights in cauldrons.

All of the guests are far too paralyzed with shock and fear to intervene as Ace ushers you toward the door.

The Aftermath

You don’t fully understand what is happening when the first years grab you and climb onto the shoulders of a giant gingerbread man to take you home.

“My true love...” you say, your arm weakly reaching out for him. The castle grows farther and farther away in the distance.

“Yeah, yeah! Put a sock in it already!” Ace groans, seizing your hand and squeezing it. His eyes soften. “We’re right here for you, (Y/N). We’re right here, so quit your yammerin’.”

You stare at where your hand and Ace’s are connected. “...true love?”

“The love poison will wear off in a few hours,” Sebek reports with a nod, leaning against the gingerbread man. “Thank goodness for that.”

“...It’s been a long night,” Jack sighs. “Like something out of a fever dream.”

“No kiddin’,” Epel says--but his eyes sparkling. “That was so much fun...!!”

“I know I sure had fun slugging that creep,” Deuce agrees.

Slowly, but surely, the cloud over your mind dissipates.

When everything is clear again, you collapse, crying, into your friends’ arms.

Who needs true love when you’ve got the best of friends by your side?  They’re the heroes you’ve always needed.
