When the disciple at the gates gave him an uncomfortable, sheepish smile and told him that she was going to be the escort for the students returning to Lotus Pier, not either of his parents, it had stung a little bit.

Even Jin Guangshan had bothered to show up, if only to be a smug prick about Jin Zixuan having made fifth in the grade rankings.

Then the disciple perked up. "Oh! But they did send a graduation gift!" she said before rifling through her sleeves for a small box.

For the short moments it took for Jiang Cheng to unwrap and open it, he cheered up as well.

Then he realized he recognized the contents.

He'd seen this same calligraphy set before, at Wei Wuxian's birthday party last autumn. The tools were even decorated in his shixiong's preferred colors.

Only... they weren't...

He closed the box and plastered on a smile as he thanked the disciple -it wasn't her fault, after all- but as he walked back to his room to finish packing his things, his heart dragged on the ground behind him.

Even when he'd managed to do something Wei Wuxian hadn't -even if his grade wasn't as high as Wei Wuxian's would have been if he hadn't been sent home, at least he'd finished the classes, and with decent grades!- it wasn't good enough to actually get a gift of his own.

Just an inferior copy.

Like him.

Before he could open the door, someone bumped him from his left.

"What's with the face, Jiang-xiong? We're finally headed back to the lands of real foo- what's that?"

Jiang Cheng sighed and opened the lid to let Nie Huaisang see. "My graduation gift."

Nie Huaisang leaned over his arm, then frowned. "But... I thought you don't like- oh."

Jiang Cheng shut the box with a snap, but before he could pull away, Nie Huaisang slipped a hand around his elbow, expression of sunny cheer back like it had never faltered.

"What time are you supposed to leave?"

"Not until morning. We'd mostly be flying in the dark if we left now."

"Same here! We were actually supposed to leave already, but Da-ge got tied up with an incident on the way, so he'll be arriving late. Which meeeeeans we've got time for our own graduation celebration!"

"Nie-xiong-"

"Come on!"

Though he really just wanted to be left alone to soak in his downcast mood, Jiang Cheng allowed himself to be half-dragged towards the lesser-patrolled buildings near the back hills.

Jiang Cheng had never actually been to the roof of the chosen building before, though he recognized the spot as one Nie Huaisang liked to sneak off to.

As soon as they sat down, he could immediately see why. "Wow. How many of these sunsets have you painted?"

"As many as I could without getting caught or rained on," Nie Huaisang replied with a grin, pulling a qiankun pouch out of his sleeve.

Jiang Cheng was unsurprised when out of that came packages of sweets and salty snacks, the smell of roasted meat prominent from some of them, and two small jars. "Not a fan of the illustrious Emperor's Smile?" he asked dryly when he saw the label.

"Eh, I've always preferred nongxiang to qingxiang whenever I've been allowed to have a sample of either at banquets. Don't tell Wei-xiong, he'd be heartbroken."

Jiang Cheng snorted, then accepted one of the jars and tore the cap off. "To graduation?"

"To getting out of here!"

They'd worked their way through most of the food and alcohol when Nie Huaisang nodded to the box that had been plaguing him since he'd opened it. "What're you gonna do with that?"

"Dunno. Don' wanna think about it."

Nie Huaisang gave a considering hum. "Why not just toss it?"

"Pretty sure that's... unfilial or something. Rude, at least." He was also pretty sure chucking stuff off the cliffs was against Lan Rules.

Okay, no, he knew it was against Lan Rules.

"Pft. I bet they won't even notice it's gone."

True. It hurt for it to be put so bluntly, but... it was true.

"And I bet it'd make you feel better."

It was really tempting.

Damn tempting.

Too tempting.

A bit unsteady from the alcohol, he hefted himself to his feet and picked up the box all in one half-boneless motion, then straightened. As Nie Huaisang cheered, he reared back and then pitched the box into the open air with all his strength.

The lid popped open as it flew in a long arc downward, the contents scattering free to disappear amongst the trees.

Maybe it was just the alcohol in his blood or the enthusiastic encouragement, but he couldn't deny that watching them go was satisfying.

Fanon likes to portray Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji as being jealous of each other because they fear wei wuxian will choose one of them over the other. Which is ignoring the fact that at least in novel canon Jiang Cheng did not even fucking know wangxian ever got along let alone that lwj was in love with wwx until at the very end of the story (in cql canon he does go through a wangxian phase early on and gets very confused by their "breakup" during wwx's sunshot era) and that Lan Wangji is mostly filled with loathing towards both himself and Jiang Cheng for 'abandoning' Wei Wuxian and not being able to save him.

It also ignores the much bigger point that both Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng are actually jealous of Wen Ning. And why wouldn't they be? That is who Wei Wuxian chose in his first life. He left the Jiang, told Lan Wangji to fuck off no he is not coming to gusu with you, and spent his days with his little-brother-shaped corpse bestie on his mountain in yiling. And then when he came back he immediately called him up the second he could string together more than two notes on a flute. Wen Ning is the real competition. (And he's winning)

i think it’s interesting how people often characterize lan wangji’s perspective of wei wuxian during and after the yiling laozi arc like “free my man, he did nothing wrong.” but to me, i feel like this is just selling short his character and his devotion to wwx. the way i see it, when wei wuxian is at his worst and in the years after when wwx comes back, lan wangji isn’t condoning his actions of that era. it’s more like, “i know you were trying to do the right thing, and things spiraled out of control, and i failed to help you back then, and i won’t fail you again.” it’s not wei wuxian’s actions that lan wangji is so defensive of but his intentions. even if lwj didn’t know at the time (and even when he comes back, at first) why wwx chose the ghostly path and gave up righteous cultivation, he has an unshakeable faith in wwx’s moral code, that wwx will do what he feels is right. or at least, doing what he thinks he needs to do to survive. this doesn’t necessarily mean that lan zhan thinks what wwx did as his mental state eroded WAS right. we see this so many times when lan zhan tries to help him, hoping that wwx will return to gusu with him. it’s not until it’s too late, when wwx is truly breaking down, that he understands that that wasn’t the right way to help wwx. the right way is to just be there for him, which is what he does when wwx returns. letting wwx make his own decisions while showing him that there is still someone who believes in him. imo this is much more meaningful than the other interpretation that i see a lot that i mentioned above. it’s about being there for wei wuxian even if he does make the wrong decisions because at the end of the day he knows that wwx, at his core, has good intentions.

the only thing i still remember is that wen qing does a surgery to bring back wei wuxian's core, and the new core is from a wen prisoner who is set to be executed. the prisoner turns out to be wen yuan's bio dad, and he's willing.

I'm looking for match-making fic where Jin Zixuan (tired of wwx constantly interrupting family time with his wife and newly born son) decides the best way to get him out of the way is to matchmake him with someone. I think he tries Nie Mingjue mainly, because they have similar interests, etc.

Jiang Cheng also gets roped in, but he thinks Jin Zixuan is nuts the whole time. NMJ thinks Wei wuxian is definitely flirting with him at some point because his muscles get complimented? Lan Xichen has to reassure him that "no, he is just like that".

It's a comedy of errors mainly, because LWJ and WWX definitely have something going on between them, and it ends with them running off with horses to elope into the sunset or smth. Jiang Yanli doesn't know her husband's matchmaking scheme, but she does know about wwx and lwj and helps them elope at the end.

Pretty sure it was a short fic, ignores canon and occurs in a what-if scenario where the whole burial mounds situation didn't happen.

hi! i was just wondering what it is specifically that you dislike about wangxian? i'm kind of intrigued, because while i get how someone could find them boring, i've never really considered anything about their dynamic (and as you mentioned in response to a previous anon, their confession scene) particularly off putting. no pressure to answer this, and this is in no way hate towards you i'm just genuinely curious <3 (i love your art by the way it's gorgeous)

Wangxian is the weakest WWX dynamic. On god, even if I'm not fond of Yanli, they have very loving relationship where they are protective of each other and gentle with each other in a harsh world. I don't ship WWX/JC but their story and complicated love of someone you grow up with and care for deeply but clash constantly with is more interesting than anything wangxian ever had. Nie Huaisang and Wei Wuxian clicked together so naturally, they are chaotic and are similiarly not too interested in being up to rules. Jin Zixuan and WWX had a potential of going from enemies to partners in crime, to become family and have each other's backs but JZX was cut short and WWX never really cared afterwards either. WWX with the wens took time to build up but his YLLZ farmer era was one of the best WWX's in the story. Damn, even Lan Xichen who's always amused with WWX's temperament and secretly has a drink with wwx and is altogether looser with the rules while still being lawful matches with him way more than LWJ where there's... nothing. They were smashed together for convenience and we were suppossed to just go with it cause they are the two main characters. LWJ feels like he was just made so WWX has a "hot stoic top" to fuck him and the rest of the characters are actually build with the story and therefore feel more natural

Wangxian don't feel like they are in love, not in the way the fans make them out to be into some romantic picture perfect angsty deserved lovestory. LWJ's personal space is constantly disrespected, he's punished constantly for WWX's mistakes, he constantly needs to be the one to adjust to how WWX is instead of the other way around and after all that, LWJ doesn't really /know/ WWX so his attraction feels very idealized. WWX is the bad boy that goes against the rules and LWJ wishes he could be that (or with that) but it's almost a childish infatuation from their Gusu days that never evolved into something more mature. And WWX? I can't see how he'd like LWJ as anything more than in a physical sense. Even their obnoxious "Back then I wanted to sleep with you" confession scene is purely physical. He doesn't really know LWJ or respects him, LWJ is just a familiar face in a world that is against WWX and he's a hot body that likes him. LWJ is an easy score in a way, he's a safe option. And it'd be SO interesting if they went into that, but instead it's played like the only true love (dont forget, they are meant to be as the ONLY gay pairing in MDZS which I find insane when everyone else has more chemistry and in the end gets shat on so wangxian can fuck in a bush. I mean, LWJ leaves LXC to be depressed and alone after everything LXC stands for and did? Fucking ridiculous.)

It tries to "subvert" tropes but ends up being more stereotypical than anything. WWX was almost meant as this jock-y rebellious hotshot but instead we got a quirky twink, early 2000s shonen protagonist and every yaoi's Uke I've been seeing since like 2008. Are they suppossed to be different because the "stoic white-coded" one is not the bottom? Is the bar this low? If anything, this ornament top is the most usual top, let's be real, LWJ barely has personality or growth or focus, he's there to fuck WWX.

This is a petty reason but MXTX's "wangxian is the only gay couple" everyone else being implied straight as if to highlight just how real their love is that they are gay in time period where it's frowned upon, even though Yi City and 3zun combinations had more chemistry than anyone is. Annoying. And so is the "Don't ship them with anyone else and don't switch their dynamics" that fuels some of the most obnoxious people in the fandom to go after fanwork creators that do/like things differently.

All in all Wangxian is THE face of danmei, they are the most known even outside of danmei circles and they are extremely mediocry written for that. I mean, fuck, you put straight couple in their place and I guarantee no one would like it, it has the depth of a high school hormone-riddled couple who have different classes and "only" get to see each other during breaks and make out during lunch with others at the table, idk it's so fucking annoying to me when I know there were better options, when WWX had so many interesting dynamics that got shat on in favor of bland ass ship and I'm tired of having to like it/tolerate it just because it's gay.
