Kinda tired of seeing the fandom forget that john after saving jack from kidnapping starts really caring for abigail and jack. No, its not ooc to imagine john in rdr2 taking care of jack, mostly after the kidnapping. And lets not forget epilogue and rdr1 John is a whole different man who will kill for his family so much he loves them. And even before, during his semi deadbeat dad era, he is actually more than just that. John is a very nuanced character, so is every character in rdr2. Look at Jack constantly running after his dad, asking constantly for his attention, copying him a lot, down to the finger guns, the hand on the hip and the sassy attitude. He keeps running after John when there are literally ten other available "uncles" at camps to interact with, including Arthur who was being ten times more of a dad to Jack than John. If John was being completely dismissive of Jack, Jack wouldn't run after him. He wouldn't try to play with John if since birth John never played with him. He keeps trying because it happened before, sometimes, John says yes, even though most of the time he says no. This means that, sometimes, John did take him in his arms and gave Jack just enough love for Jack to want his attention.
Am i trying to excuse his shitty behavior? No, not at all. What I'm saying is characters, humans, have nuance, depth, they're not all black or all white. Obviously this sort of behavior from John, of being semi there for Jack and randomly and rarely giving him attention, created a ton of insecurities and attachment issues with Jack, which is something he will sadly carry on in the first game and even into adulthood. And that's without even talking about the damage he did to Abigail. But John isn't all evil, even in his semi deadbeat era, there were some moments of light. There are reasons for characters to behave a certain way, sometimes understanding a character is understanding these reasons without trying to immediately categorise them into evil or good boxes. Situations are often way more complex than we think. And i wish people would remember that humans are never all white or all black.

Hoyo and the white skin
I've seen people fighting about Natlan and previously Sumeru and the representation of skin color and I just want to point out that
Hoyo is a Chinese game
The Chinese beauty standards include pale skin as also many SouthEastern Asian countries
2 out of 4 of the servers are SouthEastern Asian countries including the home of the game
I think that when developing the game Hoyo focused more on pleasing the home country (and surrounding countries) than America and such.
Like in *some* American games you see the American beauty standards on people who may come from a culture where it's not the beauty standards. They do that to appeal to the American audience. Not the other international folks that play the game.
Also one thing that pisses me off is that (I'm betting) it's white people that are pissed. Like skinless chicken, only cinnamon in the spice drawer white.
I'm hella white but I think we should let the people who come from the culture that is being represented figure out wether it's properly portrayed or not.
I've seen poc say that the lighter skin is fine because representation is MORE THAN SKIN COLOR. I do get the fuss over not letting a poc voice the characters though.
One thing that popped up when I heard the argument was that a few months or so, my school has a bridge with chainlink that you could stick plastic cups in (we used it for when a football player died or homecoming) and some people put the n- word on it.
People who followed the school Facebook group knew about it but it didn't get addressed to us students till like a week later. After they made the announcement, I overheard (not eavesdropping but information gathering) some black students say that they didn't really care about it and some even told the teacher that.
The person who made the announcement what a white woman and even then I thought it was stupid that a white person got more offended at that then the black folks did.
It's like that comedian bit (idk who) who offered his mexican gardener tequila and his white sister said 'Why? Cuz he's Mexican?' And the gardener was like 'Why? You have it?' Lmao.
Back more to the topic at hand Hoyo even said that it was just a fictional game, which it is. And fiction isn't always exactly 100% or even 80% accurate. I say us whitey-tighties stop getting our undies in a bunch and let the people Hoyo is trying to represent get the louder voice.
That's all and it kinda got derailed into somewhat of a rant (my mother actually got the brunt of it lmaoo) but that's my thoughts on Natlan and Hoyo and all that. But this is coming from a dyslexic, adhd, emotionally constipated ho who wrote this while have WWIII with a fucking fly on the highway.

(amc's shit promotion aside) it genuinely kills me that interview with the vampire would be Huge (or, at the very least, Much Bigger) if it had an all-white cast. same plot, same cinematography, same depth, same attention to detail. just- white new orleans, white paris, white san francisco. slave owner louis. ginger armand. goldilocks claudia. lestat. whitey white white. there's no way for me to know if any of that would've made the show worse, but clearly enough people feel that it would've made the show better. would've made them care more. but it's not, so they don't. so.

ok sorry the OTHER thing about lucienne is like. as previously stated she is dream's handpicked emissary from the waking world to the dreaming she's the diplomat in chief she's the translator she's the bridge. because the dreaming is, in a very real way, dream's own psyche, this is tantamount to giving lucienne a tremendous degree of access to his interiority and by transitive property also tantamount to entering into a deeply emotionally intimate relationship with her (unimportant for the purposes of this post whether that relationship is platonic or romantic).
now, in general, looking at the pattern of dream's close emotional relationships—dream doesn't share himself with people as a rule (beyond the access that all things that live have to the dreaming; but i'm talking about his self here, the one he doesn't like to acknowledge he even has), but when he does share with people, it's with people who have some shadow on the soul, so to speak. just looking at attested relationships in show canon, his deepest emotional connection seems to be with death, who embodies the duality of light and dark even better than he does himself. calliope is the muse of epic poetry—heroism and tragedy—and also bears the sort of divine pride that led her to cut dream off for hundreds or thousands of years when he wronged her. the less said about that other guy, the better, but he's no sunshine-rainbows-unicorns type—he's a soldier of fortune, a bandit and a killer, a man who profits from the sale of human life. even best bird matthew, in comix canon, had a sordid past that will maybe be partially retconned for the show but has still been gestured at.
dream likes the complicated ones. he's drawn to them. they speak to something in him that he won't acknowledge in himself (he has to be Whole, fully integrated, without reservation, because he is the king and he is the dreaming and if the dreaming ain't whole then the universe is in trouble—but he feels that ache nonetheless).
all that is to say: when people try to portray lucienne as dream's Designated Well-Adjusted Neurotypical Friend, i begin to harm and maim.

Thinking about geto because I want to pour milk on him and throw him against the wall. Imo his beliefs are inconsistent and self serving (which makes sense because he developed said beliefs at age 16/17 while his mental health was at an all time low). Because while he seems to have the primary motive of "only sorcerers = no curses" taking into account how he treats Maki, who has no cursed energy, it shows that the "no curses" thing isnt the main focus- bc while he decided on tbe "forced evolution" thing, theoretically he should not be Opposed to ppl w heavenly restriction bc. They still fuckin. Don't contribute to curses from what I can tell. Also heavenly restriction is pretty obviously something that is punished by uh. Is it just the Zenin's who have it. Anyway they hated Maki and they Hated Toji so he clearly isn't standing for "oppressed sorcerers" bc if so Maki should be like. The kind of person he wants to help more, as someone who would be oppressed by ppl who aren't sorcerers as well as the powerful clans.
Anyway. While getting rid of curses is for sure part of his motivation, as well as helping sorcerers (see Nanako and Mimiko) id honestly argue that his main problem that lead to him spiraling was. How do I put this. Being knocked off a pedestal
Because he was one of 3 people given the ranking of "Special Grade", and he and satoru are grouped as "the strongest". And consider that satoru comes from a powerful clan and literally has some weird omniscience and invincibility shit going on so that's a whole fucking. That's gotta be a wild ego boost, especially for someone who comes from a family of ppl who aren't sorcerers. Like you spend all this time being a fuckin weirdo and then someone finds you and it turns out you're actually incredibly special and strong, given the same rank as a fucking God Child? You're gonna have some wild self perceptions after that
Anyway then you get to watch your invincible friend get stabbed, watch the girl you became friends with and feel shitty about kinda ruining the life of get shot, and get your whole shit rocked by some guy who can't even use the magic power bullshit you have. (Though he's got a whole physical thing going on because of the trade off)
Also writing all of this out actually makes me understand the Cult Leader progression more, like besides the fact they killed ur friend and you want em dead. You're probably struggling with your ego (especially since your weird God like friend got a whole power boost from the situation) so you create a fucking eugenicist cult where you can consistently prove your superiority to yourself (surrounding yourself with people who will agree with everything you say).
Anyway in a similar vein I wholely believe in "a loving father is not inherently a good father" Suguru + Nanako & Mimiko dynamic
Final thought is roughly I feel like looking at Suguru thru the lense of "this character had a level of privilege that they felt they truly deserved, and after experiencing events that are genuinely traumatic and horrific for any person, they develop reactionary beliefs to try and regain a sense of superiority and control" rather than "oppressed minority who killed oppressors and wants to do eugenics"

yesterday, i learned that one of my acquaintances from church is like, gleefully and unreservedly supportive of the gazan genocide despite going to a church where every sermon for the past few weeks has been about the horrors and tragedy of said genocide. like, i could not fucking believe how hilarious he seemed to think it is that innocent palestinians are dying, just grinning and laughing and shaking his head and rolling his eyes when my pastor and i expressed horror at the innocent people being killed. just remembering it makes me choke up with anger.
anyway, i'm going to be very stupid and try to talk to him about it this coming sunday. i'll use all my teacherly tricks to try and gently lead him to feel one single scrap of empathy for the victims of israel's civilian massacre, but lbr: he'll probably respond with the same amount of glee and condescension as last night and it's going to end with me making me a scene at church.
but i know i shouldn't. so here are some things i should NOT say, no matter how angry he makes me:
i've always hated the sound of your voice, even before you said such horrible things. you say everything with such condescension. when you read the gospels in church, i have to hide my face behind my program to hide my grimacing. you make the words of christ himself sound like a grift of some oily used car dealer who thinks he's smarter than he actually is. i pity you for going through life with such a voice, and pity you even more for thinking it charming.
it baffles me that you'd allow something as basically human as compassion for the suffering of others to be so utterly sanded away by propaganda. it's pathetic that you could laugh at innocents dying. you've let yourself be lobotomized by a clumsy surgeon and style yourself wise with the icepick still sticking from your skull.
i've always thought your face looks like an easter island head sculpted from a raw chicken breast.
see? none of those would be productive, no matter how truly they express my feelings about this person.
thus: people of faith, pray that god grants me the wisdom and restraint to not light this motherfucker up in the middle of coffee hour. amen.
