on first inspection, to hobie, you appear to be this person that trusts way too easily and immediately treats people way too kind for a person you just met- you seem clueless and completely naive when it comes to putting your trust in others since you’re so quick to do it

hobie doesn’t think it’s a bad trait at all to be inherently kind, but when you’re kind to literally everyone you immediately deem trustworthy, it’s like you’re looking to get hurt

he might occasionally have one of his rants to you about the ins and outs of the “real world”, propaganda that surrounds you, distracting you from the truth, the sharks at the top of it all, the people that would take advantage of you

there’s no ill intent, he just really thinks you’re gonna get hurt like that

so yeah, anyway, when he first meets you, he can basically see the switch once you’ve realised he’s trust worthy

you’re the sweetest person ever without prompt, and it admittedly looks like nativity to him at first

after these encounters with bad people, he realises something about you

you’re somehow able to just know who to trust, and your guts never wrong

he wonders if it’s your spider-sense at first, if you have that

now he’s starting to piece everything together

you can easily distinguish between the good and bad people- the good you immediately trust and treat like an old friend

the bad, you never give the time of day

you’re always so quick to trust, and naive

but it’s starting to become clear to hobie that this isn’t nativity, you just have an uncanny ability to know people before they even introduce themselves

it’s kind of reassuring in a way, if he’s ever doubtful about someone, he’ll go to you and be like “thoughts?” then you can relay this insanely detailed psychoanalysis of this person you’ve just met

now he sees you as this incredibly insightful person, a lovely individual who has the potential to ruin lives with your insane ability to call people out

For some reason January 21 is a special day in many ways for Missa Cubito…

Missa death in MCExtremo. In that series he had great character development, at first he was just a scared baby who didn't know the world, everyone had to take care of him, because with the slightest carelessness he would die (literally, they were distracted for a second and Missa looked at an ender and died, because he "did not know what it was"). He spent the first few days very scared, locked up at home, until after dying and reviving due to a bug, he decided that it was time to live that life to the fullest and decided to leave his crib and go out to face danger. He learned to fight being trained by none other than Spreen and Shadoune, learned to water bucket clutch with Rubius and became brave when facing mobs (sometimes recklessly). His new way of approaching life scared Q (it even cost him a life to him to this one) but for Missa it was very effective, because after losing practically 3 lives in 2 days being a scared guy, he managed to survive until day 5 with his brave attitude (even if he survived that day, he was able to reach the final) he was so full of confidence when fighting and decided that now that he was no longer the smallest of the team he was going to protect his friends, especially Q, who was the fearful one of the group now… and that's how he took too many risks and ended up dying, being something very shocking not only for his team but for everyone in the series and for the viewers, really, Twitter was flooded with fanarts and people crying about his death (even Missa said that an aunt called him because she thought something had happened in the real life).

That was very important because before that series almost no one knew Missa Cubito, he was just "the guy who died too quickly in Dedsafio" or "The funny guy who hopefully managed to get too far in siqud craft games". But in those 5 days (5 days of consecutive streams, it was heaven for the missaurios), he won over the internet with the story of his growth and death (Even today people say that the best thing about that series was having the "team vacio legal" and Missa was the heart of that team). I think that was the moment when Missa cubito separated from Missa Youtuber and became her own character.

But that was a sad day, because that day Missa Cubito lost the first family he had found.

January 21, 2024

Llegamos al día de hoy.

Missa wakes up in the QSMP prison and reunites with his family, it was the first time that Missa, Philza and Chayanne were together at the same time since April. Not only that, but he now officially adopts Tallulah as his daughter. Despite the adverse circumstances, his family has finally been reunited and grown (although Missa already considered Tallulah his daughter, now it is official and she calls him dad).

Despite being another universe, Missa is still the kind boy who wins everyone's hearts. Missa behaved politely with the guards, being mannerly when referring to them by saying "please and thank you" and greeting everyone very kindly.

He was very nice with the eggs, even with the ones he didn't know, and he refused to hit Dapper even though he was hitting him, Missa just said: "I'm never going to hit you or do anything to hurt you."

Missa was very happy to spend time with Phil, when he spent a long time losing sight of him, he would ask where he was and look for him.

The moment of the kiss (or the kisses) was something WTF I really didn't think that one day they would kiss and definitely I imagined many scenaries, but in no way I believed it would be that way, but that's what makes it special. They are not an ordinary couple, whether platonic or whatever they called it, whatever they have is special and I guess that was a special way for it to happen. Phil probably would never have dared to ask him to kiss him in another context and that's fine, because it seems like that would be the only way for it to happen (even if they both wanted it, I don't think it would have happened in another context).

It is worth mentioning that the moments of Philza being jealous and him reaffirming that he was married and being loyal to him was something I really didn't expect. After so much time apart, they still have that unique dynamic.

The day in prison was filled with so many things, but I can say that for the first time in a long time, Missa felt fully loved, not only by being with his children and his husband, but also by all those friendly interactions he was with others and that he could not have before on the island, because the first days he was extremely shy and did not separate himself from Roier and the friends he knew and after he only connected sporadically, meeting Foolish, BBH and rarely Philza.

Something curious that Missa Himself mentioned was that the previous times he was with Phil it was more of "ohh I miss you" but they didn't amount to anything more and today he was very happy because they were able to hang out together and do more things bonding with his family.

When he and Chay freed the turtle it was adorable, then the 4 of them doing the tasks, that was a unique moment and he was very happy singing for his family (being so nervous that he forgot the words to his own songs).

His bond with Phil strengthened and they didn't have to do much, that simple moment of the two of them talking about tacos and memes was something very cozy that they needed to do a long time ago. Just as the moment when they took the children for a walk with the llamas was something so sweet for this family that they almost forgot that they were in a prison, because it seemed more like a picnic in the park.

It really was a great advance, probably what happened today will help Missa a lot to grow and leave his self-esteem problems behind. He is important, he is loved and he is useful to his family.

Missa was a trend today, as it was last year, but the big difference is that this was a happy day because somehow, today he got his family back, that big family that he hadn't had in a long time and that he wanted so much and deserved.

As much as you liked Wednesday she was not your Jenna and it hurt you more because before the gargoyle shoot you two have gone on a date together and she had promise another one that night as last time you both left it off with a kiss. You had decided to turn off your computer and to relax for a bit and went to go see what Jen-Wednesday was up to.

You had walked in seeing how she was about to put on another movie when she notice you walked in from your room. "So watcha trying find" "Another movie to watch" "Well how about we just watch some scary stories instead?" "That is alright".

You had put on some scary stories that you and Jenna would watch together when you two would be getting ready to go out. As you were talking about what you had found about Wednesday situation she just stared at you as you rambled on and on about witch craft. Wednesday always liked a girl who was into witch craft. But for the past few days she had be getting feelings that are making her sick but not the "Imma die by vomiting" sickness. She had wondered about till she remember how Enid said she felt when talked about her boyfriend, Was she inlove?

As the video was over you had notice the time and thought it was time to go to sleep as you do have to go over some lines tomorrow. But when you turned towards Wednesday she was starting at you but not like an evil or mean but she looked just like your Jenna in the moment as you remember that was how she looked at you during your guys date.

You got up quickly as you said goodnight and rushed towards your room. Only to be stopped by Wednesday, "Y/n you make me feel all these weird things that I don't like" "Oh well sorry for that-" "But I like weird things that torture me".

In that moment you and Wednesday didn't know how it happen but it did as you parted away from Wednesday lips and in the moment you leaned in for another but soon you remember again that she wasn't Jenna and that broke your heart as you would have to break it to her.

But for another month you two were together like dating together. But than you figured out how to get Wednesday back and first you were happy you can finally bring Jenna back but you would have to leave Wednesday. It was a rough night as you had to tell her but she understood.

So the next night you two were in your bathroom with the bathwater cold and the room dark only lit by candles. "So I will push your head down and I will chant your words and after counting to ten in your head you should rise up to your world", you said looking down at her with your notebook in hand with the words to say. "Y/n before I go I just wanted to say th-thank you for helping me" "No problem Wednesday but can you do something for me when you get back to your world" "What is it?".

"Find me or find my character I should say. Find them and become friends have with them on what we had and that is all I ask" "That does sound awful and that's why I love your way of thinking". "I hope to see you in the next life Wednesday I really do, now this might hurt" "Don't worry I dreamed of someone doing this to me", that is when you shoved her head in the water. You said your chant counting to ten after than letting go as Jenna rose from the bathtub. "Oh hi Y/n I didn't hear you come in" " Well you better hurry you promised you will help me with my lines" "Alright lover girl I'll be out soon just wait for me".

You went outside and as much as you loved how Jenna was back you felt a little bad for Wednesday but you can only hope she can find love in her world.

Wednesday was now heading back to her dorm till she heard a familiar voice. When she checked out her nightmares came true, it was you.

-i really don't like how romance is handled, and it's too present to just ignore. i don't find it cute, nor funny, nor romantic, nor alluring, nor particularly toxic, i just find it annoying and forced, lacking chemistry.

-i'm so confused on how i feel about vanitas. there's moments where i liked him, a lot of moments where i was neutral, but lots of others i found him incredibly annoying. but also, he's so complex, which is great, he's a well-crafted character, and you *get* it after you’ve seen these bits of his past, you come to understand him. and part of me thinks that we’re *supposed* to half-like and half-dislike him, that we’re supposed to mirror noe’s sentiments a bit, the “i don’t like you, but also i want to get to know you and to understand you and i’m never leaving your side, ever.” it’s just that for me, vanitas doesn’t have the charm or strength of character to be magnetic even when i dislike him, and i don’t know how i feel about that. i think if i didn't dislike the vanitas/jeanne approach so much, i might have been more fond of him.

-but again, that said: i'd like a rewatch, now that i know vanitas' backstory.

Yapping about Inscryption

Just 'finished' (that's in quotes cause I'm not convinced that the games not DONE done) Inscryption and overall I really enjoyed it! I stopped live blogging after a certain point so heres a post to get those out.

!Spoilers for the whole game under the cut!

>I wasn't too sure about the art style change in Act 2 at first, and the fact that I was dog water at the new card mechanics didn't help, but it really grew on me and so did the new gameplay!

>The other scrybes were really interesting, there wasn't a single one I found boring. If I had to rank them I'd go Leshy<Grimora/P03<Magnificus. Grim and P03 only occupy the same space because I love them both equally.

LUKE CARDER INTERLUDE

>He's so quirky! Love him! Seriously though he was an endearing main character, truly creepypasta protag material. Seeing him get shot in the end really caught me off guard, and honestly shook me a little. Idk but why I didn't expect him to die, especially like that. Expected like a computer monster birthed from the old disk to get him, not for the GameFuna rep to cap him in the face. Had my chest tight for a second. Anyways rip bro, raising my mantis god to the sky.

>As for Act 3, I liked it! P03 is such a delightful dickhead, who I just know would be so annoying about Pokemon natures. Botopia was less immersive than Leshy's campaign, and I like what that says about P03's character, who cares way more about gameplay. This chapter's talking cards have my heart. Lonely Wizard specifically, but Angler was nice for the 5 minutes I knew him. (I traded him for another card specifically because he said 'choose me'. Sorry man I thought you had a plan)

Where for every dead card, another is drawn. P03 tried to stop me multiple times, but I was determined. For phase two I just chose leap bots for every dead card. Silly boss. Golly was also a sweetheart, loved the mole. As for the scribe Uberbot, the file deletion threat didn't get me nearly as bad since I came off of Kinitopet and knew the game couldn't actually do something like that and be on steam, but it still had me a little nervous lol (cause like what if it did?).

I got weirdly giddy at the prospect of finding the pelt man again. Idk why because I despised him in Act 1, Got a few pelts but never actually found him. Got scammed at the mart cause I thought buying the pelt would make him show up lol.

>Falling into the factory and seeing the 3 scribes just standing there scared me a little, thought they were gonna jump me.

>After that part, going back to P03 knowing what's going to happen, I felt a bit bad. At first. Sure P03's a smug jerk, but it just wanted to be free right? The walk back when it's reminiscing about the game amped this feeling up, but I love that the game yanked the rug from under me and went 'yeah no this puter just sucks' once it starts gloating. Lol. lmao. Also I didn't expect Leshy to just rip its head off wtf bro.

>Saying goodbye to everyone at the end was sad. Having one last game with the Scrybes was so bittersweet. Grimora's game was interesting, and its a crime we didn't have time for a boss battle. Leshy. Leshy I love you so much. I like that Magnificus wasn't going gentle into that good night at first, but his insistence to keep going lost him the chance to shake our hand. I was never super into his play style, but his game was really cool looking, even if im not super into that stuff. (I know the arm thing had something to do with Yugi-oh but I know nothing abt it sorry).

>The lead up to unzipping the Old Code was done so well. Grimora may have nuked the game to get rid of it, but Luke's curiosity still doomed him in the end. The totem lady's last words before we found it were quite unsettling. I don't know what was on that zip, but whatever it was clearly messed Luke up.

>I loved the ending of the game. Already talked about it in the Luke section, but it was so abrupt and final. Idk what I expected but I knew it was over when Luke opened the door for the Funa rep. Rip.

Overall, 10/10 game. There's still something called Kaycees mod for me to do, but all in all I really enjoyed it!

OK I think I've recovered from Go Go Go Reverend Cummies well enough to have my actual point, which is:

How do you think the gender experience of being in someone else's body works in TLT? If you stuck most (cis?) dudes in a (cis?) woman's body, they'd potentially experience quite a lot of dysphoria straight off the bat, and I can confirm that the reverse is true* Does Pal just manage to internalise the idea that he's in someone else's body? Does he just have so much self-control that he can ignore the dysphoria? Is Cam trans and in possession of a body that Pal doesn't mind so much? Is Pal trans and used to it? Is Palamedes a trans woman in denial and deliberately not thinking too hard about the fact that being in Cam's body feels right?

Pyrrha does seem to experience some dysphoria over having facial hair, to the point of asking Palamedes to do necromantic electrolysis on her face. She seems fairly comfortable having no shirt on in G1d's body and calling herself "daddy" though, so I think even pre-lyctorhood she had some Gender (TM) going on.

Please help me rotate the gender in this series in my mind!

*Source: I'm trans and I remember how noticeably better I felt the instant I had surgery, for instance. Our boy Pal is gonna notice those tits and the lack of a dick.

I'm always, always thinking about the *gestures vaguely* genderfuck experiences of body swapping. Anyway, this ended up a super rambly mess of headcanons… sorry.

My headcanon on Gender and the Houses, at large, is that everyone at large is pretty “whatever” about it, and it’s nbd how people choose to present or identify—so maybe not as many people experience some amount of gender dysphoria as they would in a society that’s more rigidly gender, but it’s still a thing. Enter: flesh necromancy! I’m especially fond of this hc by @thewinterstale on how the necromantic miracle that got Cyrus and Valancy noticed by John and invited to Canaan House, early post-resurrection, was that Cyrus perfected gender-affirming flesh necromancy (and that’s why they are SO proud of their beautifully crafted bodies). This is unrelated to Pal, but I just like the idea that gender-affirming necromancy is a thing that happens in the Houses—except probably the Ninth because they don’t have any homegrown flesh necromancers and no access to the rest of the system, but I believe they still do stuff like in House-top surgery and bone straps on.

Re: bodyswapping, I think that in a situation like Palamedes and Camilla (ending up in someone else's body) most people would experience some amount of body dysmorphia before even taking Gender Feels into account. Humans are used to spending their whole life in a body that feels and moves and reacts in a certain way—when that changes abruptly, it’s going to feel a bit odd to very distressing, depending on the person and how sharp the difference is. I think there IS going to be a certain level of WTF?? if you’re suddenly in a body that doesn’t match your self-image, regardless of whether that self-image extends to gender dysphoria or whether you're even particularly attached to your concept of gender identity. But if you ARE and if the new body doesn't match what you need, then I think a different gender presentation and/or a different set of genitalia or other secondary sex characteristics is going to make that worse.

On Palamedes specifically, I do headcanon him as a cis guy in a cis female body, but I also think he wouldn't feel any specific way about it. This is less to do with gender and a lot more to do with the fact that I don't see Palamedes as someone who is especially in tune with his physical body to the point that he’d experience dysphoria or body dysmorphia. He gives me the same vibes as Harrow, who sort of treats her body like a meat vehicle that gets her where she needs to go, but doesn’t feel any specific way about the shape it takes and routinely forgets she even has one.

OTOH, I feel like Camilla would have a much stronger reaction to being shoved inside someone else’s body, regardless of whether it matches her gender identity—I actually think she'd be more distressed if she ended up in a body that was noticeably weaker or built very different than her own vs. if she ended up in a body that didn’t match her gender identity. While someone like Corona, who IMO puts a lot more stock into her gender presentation, wouldn’t deal that well if she switched bodies with, idk, Babs (very much A Guy regardless of whether he’s trans or cis) or even Gideon (cis butch woman) who might also have tits but presents in a very different way.

/SORRY THIS IS SO RAMBLY I keep thinking about this stuff. Also I feel like the lyctors have fucked with gender presentation and flesh magic so much over the millennia that they have all reshaped their bodies fifty different times and at any point it's always a surprise what they look like naked.

the point is that all these characters are flawed; they'd be boring otherwise. that's the case in literally all storytelling. does BL fandom think that all their faves in other series are perfect? no one is perfect.

however, top's flaws are what make him perfect to me. he's a well-crafted character who is fun to watch. plus, if you make a list of all his "sins" and "faults," he doesn't compare even slightly to these other characters. besides mew (uh, at least before ep6 lol), he's literally the least messy of them all - he's just a mean girl, who slept with someone else because the objectively worst of them tricked him through some of the nastiest, most underhanded means i have ever seen. all his other negatives aren't even unique to him - in fact, he seems to be the only one of the boys (besides mew) who doesn't do anything nasty unprovoked. we've seen in literally every episode what he said here is true:

and even when ray "messed with" top by telling him he wanted to give whoever punched him in the face a trophy (because *checks notes* top was irritated that ray raised his voice about mew not wanting to leave the party. and that he's dating mew... that's it lmao ray was rude just from top hitting on mew. he didn't even know him yet! what kind of "if i can't have him no one can" kinda bullshit is that? wtf ray, grow up! ), top just stared at him sadly - and that was when he still thought that ray was sleeping with mew.

every (idk, i might be missing a couple) other "flaw" of top's could be used to describe other characters in the group:

"smug" because he's hot and rich (ray)

"smug" because he's "good at sex" (boston)

promiscuous (boston)

drug user (ray)

lying/not telling mew about sleeping with boston (boston and nick)

"betrayed" mew by sleeping with someone else (boston)

not mentioning that someone kissed him without consent (mew)

punches someone in the face (sand, ray, boston, and mew lol)

he "stole" (tbh i'm not convinced) someone's lover (boston)

and guess what? he's stopped doing all of those things. (i'll concede this: he might get in another fight later. i hope not, i'm a little over all the punching soz mew can have his attempted drowning of boston tho, i won't complain about that.) (and he's definitely going to relapse and take mew's pills, probably in the next episode. but at least he's stopped before then - i haven't seen any evidence that ray has ever tried to get sober.) can't say the same for the other characters.

meanwhile, negative things he hasn't done that others have:

violated consent (boston and ray)

instigated a physical fight (sand and ray)

insisted that the person he was seeing was "just a friend" (ray and boston)

recorded someone without their consent (nick and boston)

made fun of mew for being a virgin (boston)

smashed his own phone into pieces so he could steal a sex tape (sand omg i really cannot get over how truly insane that was)

hit the person he's sleeping with (boston and ray)

drove while drunk/high (ray)

got high and sent his best friend a sex tape of his boyfriend with their other friend ON HIS BIRTHDAY, AT THE BIRTHDAY PARTY WHERE BOTH OF THEM WERE (ray lol also can't get over that one. and everyone saying he did it with "good intentions" like nah just because he knew that mew wouldn't fall in love with him over it, doesn't mean that he didn't do it out of revenge against boston and top - even if he thought he was avenging mew. ON HIS BIRTHDAY, BITCH. maybe he convinced himself he was doing the right thing, but he did it because he was angry and high.)

exposed his friend's darkest secrets about their love lives to their partners, only to hurt them because he's miserable (boston and ray)

and i don't think top would. (maybe the driving while drunk/high but based on the kind of drugs he likes, i don't think he'd be able to, like, stand let alone get in a car lol but we'll see.)

and by compiling this list, i don't mean to say that all these characters are evil, except boston, and by his own admission lol,

or that they're bad characters, just that the hate top gets is ridiculous and disproportionate. i'm not even saying that you have to like him, just don't exaggerate his faults or blame him for all the shit boston did to him. oh, you hate him based on "vibes?" don't act like it's not because he's played by force and you don't care about forcebook. it's not subtle😒 we can see your clown shoes😒

and this isn't really directed at you, anon, i know you mean well, but i am really tired of the fact that top fans seem to be the only ones who feel the need to say stuff like "he's flawed" and "he has issues," when every single fucking character is and does. why do we have to be defensive? we don't. he's a good character, and not even a bad person lol

i fucking love him, no caveats. i love everything about him.

s1 felt like a whole piece where every thread is tightly intertwined together. every scene, every line had a multilayered purpose. it was a very well-crafted storytelling. one of the main reasons this was possible was because its' focus was narrowed down to two characters - loki and sylvie.

i'm not sure how i feel about s2. it feels all over the place and the essence of the story doesn't feel quite as profound and fresh. it's all about fun time jumping stuff but it lacks the metaphorical depth of s1.

and i feel like it's very far from being as memorable as s1 was. one thing that did stick with me was the tone and pacing of s2e1, but other than that i'm left with this thought that it "could have been better", something that i never felt about s1.

but it seems like an unpopular opinion.

nah, i feel you. i am trying to withhold judgement until the end, because maybe it'll all tie together really neatly somehow, but it does feel a bit... unfocussed? at the halfway point. I don't hate it or anything, but it's hitting my narrative kinks less and i am not sure where it's going with all this time loom shit and whatnot. it feels less character-driven, and ep 3 did spend a good chunk of time on characters but it was secondary ones and it felt like it was a different story to some extent - maybe just the setting/aesthetics? i did want to know where ravonna had gone at the end of s1! so why was i not that into that episode? D: but maybe i will be more into it once i know wtf it was all going?

so far it feels both full of stuff and like it's dragging everything out to kill time. and none of us really care about the fucking time loom, do we? guys just reboot it or reinstall windows or whatever the fuck. i am not even sure what happens if it explodes. is it going to explode? well if it does, then... what? there's probably a line that explained that, even, but as i said who the fuck cares? i want more existential shit about identity and destiny and also i miss the alligator D:

Swanky Sans

Appearance: Well dressed, presentable, always wearing his best clothing. Red or black bow tie, black top hat with gold ribbon, black blazer over white buttoned shirt, smart black trousers, black smart shoes, cufflinks with a small silver pin in the shape of a book as his good luck charm, silver expensive watch on his left hand, hazel eye lights, lazy left eye, sly grin, confident facial expression, straight line teeth, same height as sans canonically is

Personality: Bookworm, history buff, very isolationist and terrible social skills, relies on his well dressed looks to portray his confidence and high social status, when in reality he’s very self conscious, always attempts to appear occupied, usually by pretending to read an Agatha Christie book that he carries around with him. His ‘nerdiness’ stems from being home-schooled yet receiving a very poor education and being neglected by his carers, which also lead to his terrible social skills and inability to notice social cues, sarcasm or make good jokes. He frequents his time in the library, and always dresses up in his same outfit, as he has multiple of the same clothes. If he’s ever caught outside of his comfort bubble, e.g without his best outfit on, if he’s outsmarted, put in a precarious social position or on the spot, his façade will drop very quickly from a confident, well presented, stable looking guy to an incredibly awkward, anxious, unaware individual with absolutely no clue how to get back to his usual snazzy self, and will almost always run off to his wardrobe, the library or his study room, where he’ll either practice music or bury himself in a hyper fixation of either a book, a specific song, musical artist, or historical event, which he also just naturally does every few weeks. He’s a singer, but only when he’s alone, and if ever caught singing, will likely just freeze from embarrassment on the spot and just stop completely, despite being a very capable singer and pianist. He struggles with making friends and has very few connections, even if people try very hard to befriend him, he has no clue how to reciprocate it and will often appear emotionless in his response to peoples kindness. However, if you do manage to get him on your good side, the majority of topics in his conversations are passionate rants about his hobbies and interests, in which he’ll suddenly cut himself off and get rather embarrassed, before usually running off to bury himself in a book again. Romantically, he’s a very passionate person, with a lot of flowing literary creativity, and often writes about romantic experiences between 2 individuals, no one in particular, often inventing characters to imagine in his fictional romantic short stories and poems, and may sometimes write a song to accompany this literary work, which he’ll practice for hours before recording it and saving it to his laptop, which he keeps extremely hidden as it’s where he documents his feelings and activities. The way he talks is seemingly intellectual sentences, interrupted with short pauses, and a not very intellectual word. For example, “Ah yes, I was examining the..thingies and I noticed the precise structure of this literary work is articulated beautifully.” or, “This song is perfectly hand crafted, the rhythms compliment the melodies extraordinarily, I love how the lyrics are so.. Flumbily jumbily.. Ignore that I said that.” He also has very little physical expression or emphasis on his words, even what he’s passionate about, and will often sit very still no matter how excited his voice gets. Overall he's a smug and confident guy on the outside, awkward antisocial little bookworm on the inside, but that doesn't mean you should underestimate him, you never know what sneaky schemes and tricks he's got up his sleeve.. or in his thousands of books

well now i'm angry.

"Don't Write What You Know" by Bret Anthony Johnston, The Writer’s Notebook II: Craft Essays from Tin House

summary

Johnston introduces this essay by subtly but smugly noting that he teaches at Harvard. not a great start, bud. he says on day 1, he gives his students a list of things not to do in fiction.

"Don't start a story with an alarm clock going off. Don't end a story with the whole shebang having been a suicide note. Don't use flashy dialogue tags like intoned or queried or, God forbid, ejaculated. Twelve unbearably gifted students are sitting around the table, and they appreciate having such parameters established."

DO THEY?? ARE YOU SURE??

anyway. he goes on to say his last rule is "don't write what you know." (why not "write what you don't know" which is, you know, encouraging?) his very long-winded yet simple point is that you shouldn't write fiction that is an exact replica of your own life. the result of doing this is creating a work that is self-referential and thus meaningless (which he later contradicts by saying intending meaning in fiction is Bad).

"For me, it's the difference between fiction that matters only to those who know the author and fiction that, well, matters."

i have never wanted so badly to punch a craft essay.

he then undoes his entire argument by saying 1) he has in fact written autofiction and 2) writers should use their experiences as inspiration for fiction, but not let those experiences become the fiction itself. which could make sense, but not the way he pitches it.

"Instead of thinking of my experiences as structures I wanted to erect in fiction, I started conceiving of them as the scaffolding that would be torn down once the work was complete."

my dude. if you wanted to write an essay about scaffolding, write an essay about scaffolding. don't couch it in meaningless prescriptive rhetoric.

he cites many authors who have written works inspired by their lives but not about their lives, like Tim O'Brien. Johnston makes a good point here (except it's actually just O'Brien's point): in changing real events into fiction, whatever is fictionalized then invokes meaning. his example is that O'Brien wrote both a fictionalized and autobiographical version of his experiences in Vietnam, and they are decidedly different.

here, we have the potential to get interesting, to actually say something important about craft and life and identity and fiction, but instead he moves on to say that the cardinal sin of fiction writing is intending meaning, rather than allowing the creative process to create meaning, and allowing the reader to interpret meaning.

"Another deeper, more essential part of me dies when a workshop student says, 'What I wanted to do was ________.' The idea of a writer 'wanting' to do something in a story unhinges me. At best, such desire smacks of nostalgia; at worst, it betrays agenda."

and then he goes into a very boring white guy rant about how everybody should be able to write about the experiences of everyone else regardless of race, orientation, ability, etc., with all the nuance of a slab of concrete. personally, i'm not firmly on either side of this debate, but i do feel strongly that it should be discussed with sensitivity and the acknowledgement of the greater historical context of the part american literature and the publishing thereof has played in systemic oppression. but that's just me.

lastly he declares something i really do agree with:

"I say fiction is an act of courage and humility, a protest against our morality, and we, the authors, don't matter. What matters are our characters, those constructions of imagination that can transcend our biases and agendas, our egos and entitlements and flesh. Trust your powers of empathy and invention, I say."

in short, you're better off reading the Zadie Smith essay, "Fascinated to Presume: In Defense of Fiction" which i'll probably review tomorrow, out of spite.

my thoughts

oh boy, here we go.

first, i don't claim to know everything about writing. i don't even claim to know a little about writing. at best, i have considerations. possibilities. observations, maybe. i don't present things in shoulds and should nots. but what i do know is teaching writing. i know the shoulds and should nots of pedagogy. and this guy is not doing it right. every word of this essay is condescension. it feels like a grotesque power play. he came up with his clickbaity title and then said something ultimately pointless.

his entire argument is a polemic of a false premise. is there really anyone out there writing their exact experiences as fiction? and if there are, how is it anyone's business? instead of entering this topic with curiosity and consideration, he just paints these broad, bland strokes. if i were to write this, my question would be, who are the writers who write their experiences as fiction, and why? how do they do it? what can be gained or lost? to what degree could you or should you fictionalize the events of your life? i have a friend from Gaza who came to the US to write about her experiences there. important experiences that she can't write as nonfiction and which have enormous consequences for herself and her family. why shouldn't she write about that? in what way is telling someone like her "don't write what you know" going to help her? it's not. it's going to silence her more than she's already been silenced.

one point of this essay is that you shouldn't write with intention of meaning. this is a widely held belief in many MFAs, and one i rallied against for a long time. i have since come to see it the way i see all writing advice: there are consequences and considerations to going one way or another. and you don't know them until you write the thing. and to write the thing, you can't have someone shouting down at you that you shouldn't.

the truth is, every word of fiction ever written has been framed by the experiences of the writer. that cannot be denied. we are beings made of memory, and those memories create our lens through which we see the world. it doesn't matter how fantastical or imaginative your work is. it's still from you. it still has pieces of you in it. when approaching fiction, all your work is going to be on a spectrum of closeness to your lived experiences. and even if you attempt to convey them as true as they happened, they're still distorted through memory. our memories themselves are fictionalized. the depiction of real and not real, fiction and creative nonfiction, is a false dichotomy: everything is unreal, because it is merely being rendered. and ultimately, as a teacher, as a reader, my job isn't to declare a piece of work too real to an experience and therefore too self-referential; my job is to interpret it, firstly, as myself. it is simply not my business as a reader to know what happened in reality and what didn't.

i'll never understand creative writing professors who don't know the very basic tenet of creative writing pedagogy: help writers write. encourage them to write. say what they need to hear to get words on the page and be excited about them. be proud of them. as a teacher i don't give a fuck about helping writers become better. what i want is to help writers become more true to themselves, get closer to the work that's most meaningful to them. to say i know how to help writers become good at writing would be so egotistical. it presumes i know what good writing is. it presumes i believe that there's good writing and bad writing, and not just myriad lenses of personal taste. who cares what's good? all i care about is helping a writer move a little farther along on their journey. clearing a path for them. but it's never my intention to pave that path myself, to say here's your destination. how fucking hard is it to accept that creativity is the pursuit of the unknown? and that we need to have a fundamental respect for that pursuit in any shape it takes? and without that respect, we as teachers aren't helping writers at all, we're only carving them into our own likenesses?

okay, i'm going to stop here for now because i'm getting upset. but i'm not done with this topic. i have several essays in me that present some of the premises here in ways that aren't destructively prescriptive and condescending, and hopefully i'll find the time to get them down.
