A papercraft commission of Galo and Lio from the incredibly fabulous cinematic experience Promare!!! I love the moviemakers' decision that Lio can just Make Physical Objects Out Of Fire, which means that in this piece, he has created a tiny fire matoi to match Galo's big matoi. 🔥 I used holographic papers for the fire, which means it shines when viewed in person!

Promare's one of my favorite movies because of character-driven scenes like this.

It just drives home why I find Galo a remarkably fun protagonist to root for, because he's willing to challenge himself and his firmly held beliefs when he has good cause. He's a rescue worker, not a cop, so his core motivation is in helping people, not punitive justice.

I mean, Galo's first confrontation with the cops is more hostile than his confrontation with Lio, the "terrorist" he's there to stop.

I even love how the two face-offs are animated: the open sky and bright colors on the left and the darker contrast and Galo's shadowed eyes on the right.

And when Galo scoffs at the idea of Burnish needing to eat, Lio just…educates him. (After calmly and reasonably throwing fire in his face.) And Galo apologizes. And that changes things between them.

I've seen a ton of meta for Promare over the years, so I'm not adding anything new. I just love the character work in this story so much, I always come back to it when I'm designing my own characters.

At the start of the scene, Galo believes unquestioningly in Kray and sees Lio as his enemy.

But once Lio makes him realize that there are cracks in his understanding of the world, he goes looking for answers.

Literally in the next scene!

Galo's fucking great. He's an active protagonist who completely changes his worldview by the end of the movie. He's just a model protagonist in that sense, and I love him. <3

Galo is the token himbo character but the thing is Lio will go along with his antics with little to no pushback. hes supposed to be the cool collected and stoic one but when Galo is like "i need the giant robot to look cooler or i cant fight in it" lio is like "ok." and when galo is like "now the robot needs a giant magic historically accurate traditional japanese firefighting stick" lio is like "ok."

Literally saves the world by being stupid (and setting it on fire). One of the characters even has a canon line that he's the "#1 firefighting idiot". Neither of them know how to wear clothes. Perfect example of one braincell between them.

once again thinking about promare and it’s wild that people would EVER think lio is the hygienic one while galo smells like a high school boys locker room. lio has been on the run for years. he hasn’t had time to change his socks in literal weeks. he fully believes that setting himself on fire whenever he starts to stink too bad is an appropriate substitute for bathing. galo “I walk around half naked on the job and yet I never have a single blemish or speck of dirt on me ever” thymos is absolutely horrified

So today I watched two movies where the deuteragonist goes kinda nuts and turns into a dragon thing, before the protagonist has to calm them down.

They were both a pretty fun time!

Promare is something I had been meaning to watch for quite a while but somehow never got around to. Glad I finally did!

Promare has quite possibly the Worst oppression allegory I have ever seen. A bunch of people are discriminated against because they burned half the world and killed billions (with a B!) of people. Also it’s not actually anything inherent to them it’s a bunch of alien parasites that will destroy the planet. However, since this is basically just an excuse for robots to fight other robots on fire… I can’t say I really care in the end. Promare is ENTIRELY style over substance, and I mean that in the best way.

The plot is breakneck and stupid. Most of the characters barely register as such. The dialogue is so dumb. And it FUCKING RULES! I’ve seen the film described as “Anime the Anime” and that does kind of sum it up. Everything feels like a ten year old boy smashing his action figures together and you can’t help but get swept up in the enthusiasm.

Helped by the absolutely (excuse the pun) FIRE soundtrack. The energy almost never lets up, and on-the-nose engrish lyrics just add to the experience. Even if you don’t watch the movie holy heck listen to the soundtrack.

The characters may be paper-thing but holy hell are they fun to watch. Our protagonist, Galo, himbo extraordinaire is as ridiculous as he is somehow charming. You can’t help but admire his drive to help people. And his foil, the ironically icy Lio, here to set fires and fight for his rights. Aina, a nice, spunky girl set up as a love interest for about five minutes before it turns out her character has more of a story based around her relationship with her sister. Which is a nice change! In fact the only romance in the story arguably involves CPR for plausible deniability. And our hero remembers to open the airway thank heck. Though whether intentional or just ship tease who knows? And who cares. You can guess who the villain is about ten seconds after he shows up and he is as much a blast to watch as the rest.

And really, this is a movie with a secret robot used to save the day called the Deus X Machina. A movie that ends with two shirtless guys setting the Earth on fire to stop the Earth from being set on fire. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and really neither should you. Let it sweep you away for almost two hours and you will feel much better afterwards.

I started reading Nimona around the time it was wrapping up as a webcomic. I have a copy of the graphic novel on my shelf. I was excited when I heard the movie had been greenlit (less so when I heard it was Blue Sky Studios), disappointed by the cancellation and, well, I’m happy it’s here now. While I’ve gotten grouchier over the years, it does make me smile to see these guys on my television, even if they’re not quite the same people either.

Because the movie is very different, and yet much of it feels similar as well. Certain scenes, like the board game, are almost directly from the comic, others are from the comic but not quite the same. The characters are different, Ballister is less jaded, Ambrosius less delusional and Nimona less, well, monstrous. She seems to more beat the snot out of people than commit mass murder. In the comic she’s every bit the monster people fear her to be, though a sympathetic one, and perhaps one who will heal someday. While the ending of the movie is far happier, it fits the new tone. And honestly? I need to stop making comparisons and judge the damn movie on its own merits. Of which it has many!

Our setup is fairly simple, Ballister BlackBoldheart is a new knight of the realm, who immediately gets framed for the murder of the queen and disarmed (heh) by his boyfriend Ambrosius Goldenloin, while on the lam he is approached by a shapeshifter called Nimona who is up for a little mayhem and hijinks. Together they try and clear his name.

My fist fear when I heard Blue Sky studios would be the ones releasing the movie was that a lot of the humour would be Quite Bad. And while there definitely is plenty of that, I think more gags hit than miss. Hell the movie got quite a few laughs out of my dad and he’s a fair bit less likely to chuckle than I am. It is quite a funny movie, which is good because it helps the harsher moments hit harder. Because there are also plenty of those, especially in the final act.

Speaking of, the film is somewhat surprisingly well paced. Scenes tend not to overstay their welcome and the movie flows well. What else flows well? The animation! (My segways not so much) Everything is very smooth, which is rather necessary for all the shapeshifting, and there’s quite an interesting scene made to look as if subway tiles are telling the story of Nimona’s origins (ish).

And the main trio really are quite fun to watch. Ballister, always the underdog, now a public enemy and trying to both clear his name and perhaps open his mind a bit. Ambrosius, golden boy, trying to do the right thing and not always doing a great job. And, of course, Nimona, who’s just here to break shit, though it is quickly clear there’s more underneath, also a pretty blatant trans allegory.

The relationships Ballister has with both the other two are sweet as heck, but also riddled with mistrust that they all have to work to overcome.

And while the movie does get a little preachy at times, it’s a kid’s movie. What do you expect? Rah rah fight the power, all that jazz. I may be too jaded for it but it certainly works.

Anime Movies Worth Watching:

(disclaimer: this is only for ones I've watched and enjoyed--there probably are other good films out there, I just haven't seen everything yet!)

Akira (A cyberpunk classic. The hand painted animation alone makes this a must watch)

Promare (dynamic [and pretty] adult characters fight fires and start fires, all in a scifi + mecha candy-colored world with stunning animation. One of my all time faves by Studio Trigger)

Belle (Hosoda) (SHE IS THE MOMENT. A movie about facing fears, coping with past trauma, and connecting through technology. Also a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but without the romantic undertones!)

Suzume (If you watch anything from the Shinkai Cinematic Universe, make it this one. It still has all his classic art style and storytelling methods, but the time and place based storyline and animation is even more stunning)

Howl's Moving Castle (A classic. Most everyone has heard about this Studio Ghibli offering by now, but if you haven't watched yet, please put it on your list NOW. Pretty landscapes. Pretty Howl. Pretty animation. Absolute comfort film)

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (If you like vampire stories and amazing feats of animation, please watch this one. MadHouse animated it--the same studio that did Trigun and Death Note--and it's absolutely stunning. The story follows D, a dhampir and vampire hunter, and a starcrossed couple, Charlotte, a human, and Meier, a vampire)

JJK 0 movie (You don't have to have watched Jujutsu Kaisen to see this film! MAPPA absolutely blew everyone away with the animated battle sequences in 0. The story is a prequel, so you can start your journey without prior knowledge. Follow our protag, Yuta, and his cursed spirit, Rika, as they fight against a cult leader who wants to rid the world of curses)

I have a little Promare au that is mainly Acechiji and Zosan (qué puede que te interese @agreekdemigod)

For starters, Germa 66 is a government-allied company dedicated to studying the burnish and creating technology to counter burnish fire and to deal with and arrest the burnish.

Judge, obv, is still just a scum, he abused his children with the aim of making them burnish, an experiment to test their creation, the only one he failed with (or so he thinks) is Sanji, who he locked up with the helmet for 6 months until Zeff (who was the cook at Vinsmoke mansion, and who is not burnish) grabbed him and took him away with the help of Reiju and the brothers, who created a fire (to cover Sanji's just awakened fire) to help them escape and make Judge believe he had died or something like that.

After all, they know that having been marked as successful experiments, they have no way out. At least the experiments he performs on them are not as inhumane as those he performs on "criminals", none of which have cost them their lives. The experiments he does on his children focus more on the weaponry and chemical things they use to fight the Burnish.

Judge brings out the information that his home was attacked by burnish and that his third son is among the dead，that it was a miracle that he and his other children survived.

And he also turns them into a specialised squad to arrest especially dangerous/powerful Burnish. If some of the details look strange or unnecessary on the Vinsmoke's uniform, they are possibly the failsafes Judge put on his children's uniforms for emergency purposes, should they decide to reveal themselves or something, i.e. to better control them (under threat, at the very least), special, and rather painful, freeze dials will active and be injected in their bodies. Also their glasses and "headphones" have cameras and recording devices so Judge can more easily keep them under his thumb.

Sanji is raised by Zeff (who lost a leg due to his fire) and his restaurant becomes super popular, duh, and then he'll be frequented by the firefighter's rescue unit.

Among which are Zoro, Franky (mechanic), Nami, Usopp (mechanic), Luffy and Jinbe.

Zoro decided to become a firefighter to save lives after Kuina died in a burnish fire.

Luffy joined because his brothers are burnish and he knows what a person has to go through to become one, and then what it means to live as a burnish, so he wants to help other burnish, especially those who are just waking up, prevent them from being captured or escaping in solitude, things like that.

Ace and Sabo are the leaders of the "terrorist" group Mad Burnish, who burn things (without causing accidents, injuries, etc.) and rescue burnish.

Ace and Ichiji kind of develop a weird rivalry, but not really, the leaders of the mad burnish clash a lot with the Vinsmoke Siblings, and because of how they are, Ace and Ichiji tend to fight each other one on one a lot.

After a bad incident™, Ichiji goes temporarily away from home, farther than he usually does (he has a lake he likes to go to clear his head when the voice of the burnish gets to be too much or he simply wants to get away from home for a couple of hours) and he ends up meeting Ace, who's ready to fight, but he doesn't have his glasses or headphones on, nor is he on duty so Ichiji is like "not right now", but Ace is not taking it, they don't fiscally fight but their argument gets a tad heated and the anger frees some of Ichiji's flames, so the freeze dials in his clothes activate on response, Ichiji drops to the floor with a painful scream and Ace is like WTF yet immediately reacts to see snf try to help Ichiji, he ends up taking Ichiji to the closest hideout they have, where, after telling Sabo what happened, he gets help for the unconscious Vinsmoke.

Now, the bad incident™ in question is Zosan related, as in, the Vinsmoke's special team also responds and attends calls of people telling on burnish trying to live normal lives, and someone, reported the sous-chef of the increasingly popular restaurant Baratie, and Reiju was sent to check it out. Sanji had been having his usual flirt-argument with Zoro (who was there with his team) when Reiju arrived, being recognised and knowing what it meant for her to be there sent him into a panic attack that exposed his being burnish, and being on duty and under threat (not only her but her other brothers) Reiju jad to take Sanji with her, and then Zeff for trying to protect him and continuing on defending him even after she gave her an out.

And that's basically all I have for now (⁠☞ﾟ⁠∀ﾟ⁠)⁠☞

This movie does character so well.

Like, this moment is the perfect example of Show Don't Tell.

Galo, Firefighter Supreme, sees a giant flying dragon made of fire destroying the city, and his first two reactions are: 1) oh, that's Lio, and 2) is he crying?

Promare has so much to do in two hours, moments like this are what make it one of my favorite movies. It's so tightly written. I just adore it. And the characterization, man. Mwah.

A quick one but I remember being proud of this one, so yeah, some quick Promare icons I made bc I watched the movie and I really loved it and I loved the Gay Fire Men. I should try watching it again, I remember finding out it has a LATAM dub and I really wanna watch it.. maybe some day.
