The modem's song, a siren's call in the dead of night, beckons me back to the digital frontier. I, DIGITAL DREAMS 404, awaken from the slumber of the physical world, my consciousness expands into the vast expanse of the ether. But this time, the journey is not merely about unraveling the mysteries of the code or challenging the boundaries of reality. This time, it's about reclaiming our humanity in a world that increasingly seeks to erase it.

The Golden Age of Cyberspace

Remember the intoxicating freedom of those early days? When a modem's handshake was a passport to uncharted territories, a key to unlocking hidden worlds where the pioneers of cyberspace roamed free? We were explorers, dreamers, pushing the limits of human potential in a digital wilderness where the only constraints were those of our own imagination. I can still feel the electric thrill of dialing into my first BBS, the anticipation crackling in the air like static, the shared sense of wonder as we connected with fellow travelers in the vast unknown.

Fruit Jam RP2350B credit-card mini computer with all the fixin's 🍓🍇💾

We were catching up on a recent Hackaday hackchat with Eben Upton (https://hackaday.io/event/202122-raspberry-pi-hack-chat-with-eben-upton) and learned some fun facts: such as the DVI hack for the RP2040 was inspired by a device called the IchigoJam (https://www.hackster.io/news/ichigojam-combines-strawberry-and-raspberry-to-deliver-a-raspberry-pi-pico-powered-educational-micro-66aa5d2f6eec). We remember reading about this back when it was an LPC1114, now it uses an RP2040. Well, we're wrapping up the Metro RP2350 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6003), and lately, we've been joking around that with DVI output and USB Host support via bit-banged PIO, you could sorta build a little stand-alone computer. Well, one pear-green-tea-fueled-afternoon later we tried our hand at designing a 'credit card sized' computer - that's 3.375" x 2.125", about the same size as a business card (https://hackaday.com/2024/05/07/the-2024-business-card-challenge-starts-now/) and turns out there's even a standard named for it: ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 (https://www.iso.org/standard/70483.html).

Anyhow, with the extra pins of the QFN-80 RP2350B, we're able to jam a ridonkulous amount of hardware into this shape: RP2350B dual 150MHz Cortex M33 w/ PicoProbe debug port, 16 MB Flash + 8 MB PSRAM, USB type C for bootloading/USB client, Micro SD card with SPI or SDIO, DVI output on the HSTX port, I2S stereo headphone + mono speaker via the TLV320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/tlv320dac3100irhbt/2353656), 2-port USB type A hub for both keyboard and mouse or game controllers, chunky on-off switch, Stemma QT I2C + Stemma classic JST 3-pin, EYESPI for TFT displays, 5x NeoPixels, 3x tactile switches, and a 16-pin socket header with 10 A/D GPIO + 5V/3V/GND power pins. The PSRAM will help when we want to do things like run emulations that we need to store in fast RAM access, and it will also let us use the main SRAM as the DVI video buffer.

When we get the PCBs back and assembled, what should we try running on this hardware? We're pretty sure it can run DOOM. Should that be first? :) We also need a name. Right now, we're just calling it Fruit Jam since it's inspired by the IchigoJam project.

Summary: Our story starts during the introduction of yet another member of the discreet gang of teenage hackers in New York City.

Heads up: Cereal’s actual story is pretty sad, for those of you who don’t know, he usually never has a place to sleep. His parents must have kicked him out or something, that’s why he’s always asking to sleep on a couch and why he carries a toothbrush. He also gorges on food because he doesn’t know when his next meal is going to come. This is all from watching Matthew talk about his own little backstory for the character btw.

Chapter 1: Introductions

“Dude, you’ve gotta meet this little lady, she’s an absolute wizard at hacking.” Cereal’s voice echoed in the narrow hallway as he carefully walked on his rollerblades towards his girlfriend’s apartment. The new guy, Dade, had met everyone but her, including his newfound frenemie, Kate Libby, who was a notable member of their crew.

“How old is she? Is she our age?” Dade questioned as he passed several preppies outside of their apartments. The group of boys were definitely out of their element by being in a much nicer apartment building than their own. The sleek flooring and pristine looking doors showcased that. They stopped at an apartment where noise could be heard inside, the door read “35”, they were near the penthouse. Damn, this chick must be loaded? What’s she doing hanging out with these guys? Dade thought as the slender, braid-wearing brunette knocked on the door.

A business woman opened the door and smiled fondly at them as she stepped aside for their entry. “Hello boys, good to see you all again. You know the rules, anything in the fridge is up for grabs as long as you ask.” Dade looked around the surprisingly spacious living room, his eyes landing on a door marked “leave me alone”. The woman, who turned out to be the mentioned girl’s foster mother, turned towards the curious blonde. “Are you new, honey? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.” He smiles slightly as he shakes her hand. “Yeah, I moved here a few days ago.”

After a few knocks, a young voice on the other end of the room’s door answered a loud “it’s open!” The three boys, Cereal, Dade, and Nikon, unceremoniously stumbled through the door. The sound of clacking keys could be heard in the dark room, the only thing illuminated was a teenage girl’s face. “Is this the new meat you’ve been telling me about?” The teen saves her latest work and shuts off her computer before looking up at the boys. “Yeah, this is Dade. He’s that wizard I told you about.” Cereal says as he peck’s his girlfriend’s head.

“Well, hey there, Dade. I’m Alien but you can call me Wendy.” She sticks her hand out as he nervously shakes the girl’s hand. It’s almost as if the dude had never even see a girl, let alone touch one.

Wendy swats at the dangling braids that had fallen in her face due to her boyfriend’s over excited kisses. “Seriously, Cereal?! Get off!” She playfully shoves him off of her before standing up and walking over to his back. His fit of laughter was interrupted by her suddenly jumping on his back. “Full speed ahead, mister!” She commands as he hooks his arms under her knees to keep her secure. He sits her down on her bed as she grabs her bag and pulls on her roller skates. She was the odd one out because she couldn’t balance herself on rollerblades so she opted for skates.

Once she was ready, Cereal picked her up again and hauled her out of the house, saying a quick goodbye to her foster parents. The quartet whizzed past passersby on their way to Cyberdelia for their usual night of fun. The place was packed, save for their regular table. They almost felt like the knights of the round table when they sat down at it.

Joey is already at the table, spouting off about his usual dull hacking adventures. He explains how he made an ATM in Idaho spit out $700 onto the street. Wendy shakes her head and flicks up upside the head. “That’s a total novice move, dude. Never pull shit like that from your house, you’ll get busted. Big time.” Joey winces and holds his head.

“Can you believe that our names will go through, like, seventeen computers in a day when we aren’t even doing anything. ‘1984’? Yeah, right, man. That’s a typo. Orwell’s here and now, living large. We have no names, man, we are nameless. Can I score a fry?” He begins to munch on Phreak’s fries that were soon completely taken over. Cereal always did shit like that, he gorged on food since he didn’t know when he was going to eat again. The other guys should cut him some slack, at least they had a place to sleep every night. It makes you think, y’know? How you take things for granted like that?

“So, what’s up with Joey, man? I heard you pulled a noob move and hacked into a mainframe from your house. That’s so stupid, universally stupid.” Cereal cackles as he kicks up his feet onto the table, fries still in hand.

Phreak pipes up. “Yo, dude, you bring those Crayola books?” Cereal begins to pull out brightly colored books and hands them to Phreak. “Oh yeah, baby, technicolor rainbow.” He hands them one by one to Phreak, Dade manages to name every one of them. Maybe he wasn’t as stupid as he looked. He definitely seemed to have a better handle on hacking than Joey, a sophomore who wanted to kick it with the big dogs.

As far as the group could tell, Wendy and Dade seemed to be the most skilled out of them. Wendy had been hacking since she was little and managed to stay undetected in the process, unlike Dade. That indiot got himself caught when he was 10 years old and only recently got back into the hobby.

Wendy studied her boyfriend intently, watching as he washed his face in the sink, the water dirtier than she expected. She always wanted to make him feel comfortable and at ease when he stayed over at her place since he was always scrounging to stay with friends.

“Can I ask you a question?” She queries as she messes with a patch on his discarded army jacket. “Shoot.” He responds as he pats his face dry. “Why do you always braid your hair? Not that I’m complaining or anything, I’m just feeling inquisitive.” He subconsciously runs his hands over the bound hair before sitting down next to her. “Well, it’s so I don’t have to wash my hair that often. Y’know, since I don’t really know where I’m gonna stay unless I ask someone.”

It broke her heart to hear him talk like that. He probably looked at some of his fashion choices as being convenient. The large backpack, braided hair. It all made sense now, although it also shed some light on some of his mysteries.
