you want a new kind of guy, fine, i raise you: the lady i was briefly roommates with in college who once smoked a blunt at a party and then spent an hour confessing earnestly to me that she genuinely preferred reading detailed episode recaps over actually watching the tv show in question
Only Dull People Are Brilliant At Breakfast by Oscar Wilde
I read this collection of quotes a couple of years ago, and ever since I have wanted a physical copy of this book. I decided it was finally time to get one and have a reread. I love Wilde and this collection of quotes feels a lot like a trip into his brain, it got me really motivated to finally pick up The Ballad Of Reading Gaol.
I've seen a bunch of these going around from artists today, and I'm loving them! But why should they have all the fun?
We writers have worked hard to ignore our current WIPs this year to dream up new ideas we'll never write about! We've busted our tails to see how long we can go before people who read our ongoing long fics reach out to make sure we haven't died!
We have broken bread with writer's block and had two in the morning plot epiphanies. We've brought back the dead and given them children. We've resurrected planets and killed off characters for looking at us funny because...well, because we can!
Here's my creative 2023 in a nutshell, and I hope some other writers will do this too. Even if you don't think you have been particularly "productive", I think you'll surprise yourselves if you take inventory.
I did!

"BATCHED" IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS THROUGH JANUARY 7TH!
It feels like I wrote a lot less this year than previous years, but I think it’s less about word count and more that my two big projects, Fugue and Mezzo, sucked up my entire mental bandwidth and I just didn’t have capacity to kick out one shots like I have in the past. I have a bunch of ideas for fun one shots, but not enough time or energy to realize them.
Also, this number is by no means accurate. My Mezzo Leftovers document is sitting at 11.3k, and Fugue finished up with a scrapheap of 28.3k. Gosh, it's hard to believe Fugue was actually 2023. It feels like years ago. Just writing it aged me 10 years. XD
Smut scenes written (if applicable): None. Did I daydream frequently and in great detail about how Sam and Kaidan reconcile in ME3? Yes. Could I write it in my sleep at this point? Also yes. Did I write a word of it? No.
New things I tried: 2nd person POV, Mordin POV, and EDI POV were all new and very scary things I tried, and think were largely successful (jury is still out on EDI and Mordin because only my beta has seen it, but I’m pleased with them).
Fic I spent the most time on: Probably Mezzo, because I wrote more of it than Fugue in 2023.
Fic I spent the least time on: Probably Capriccio, because it was short and mostly wrote itself.
Favourite thing I wrote: Well…I wrote so little outside of the long fics, because they have sucked up all my time and spoons. Fugue is something I am so proud of, but Mezzo has been so fun.
Favourite thing I read: A Sip of Serenity was a Spec Recs Kaidan & Liara treat fic for me by @screwyouflightlieutenant and I love it with an unholy love. Also, Madrigal and Volta by @dandenbo are PHENOMENAL stories you should drop everything and read.
Writing goals for next year: Finishing Mezzo sounds ambitious, but I guess I can be ambitious in January. XD
Tagging...I don't know! Who hasn't done this? If you haven't, please do it and tag me, because I wanna see. @stormikins? @otemporanerys?
After an obscene amount of ordering, getting that ordere cancelled, ordering again, getting that package delivered to the wrong city, arguing with FedEx, arguing with Target, ordering AGAIN, and having a four week delay -
I finally got Danny Phantom A Glitch in Time!!
I’m not the best at reviewing things, but my most important thoughts are below the cut:
- I love when Danny discovers Dan (called Phantom, but he’s Dan) is loose, you can see the distress on his face in every panel. He’s not smiling, he’s pulling into himself, the stress lines are literally on his face.
- Vlad is an unapologetic bitch, and he completely owns it.
- Dan’s design while he has Clockwork absorbed is FIRE! I love it!!
- Can I just say that I adore how much Danny CARES about everyone? He offers to help Dan, to give him a home, before they fight. He wants to give Dan a place to belong.
- Vlad’s redemption felt so natural and so right. He’s been through so much, he’s done everything in his power to get what he wants. And now he knows that, yeah, that’s not how it works. (But he has a child now, so I’m stoked for that arc) (Will Dani come back for the next issue? What will she think of Dan? I NEED sibling rivalry with those two)
- The Disasteroid is both canon and not canon now. Time travel fuckery for the win!
Was the months of fighting with various customer services worth it? 10000000% yes
Do I hope the next issue gets an in store release to I can just go grab one at Barnes & Noble? Please, god.
Okay okay it's very (somewhat) unlikely to happen, but I am FERVENTLY hoping that they play Hotel California in the Lotus Casino episode. Just....please. Come on. The lyrics fit it SO WELL. What more can you ask for? Even if it's just instrumental parts or just the guitar solo, I would be thrilled. Or a snippet as they walk into the Lotus Casino. Maybe the guitar solo over a montage of them playing in there.
you’re the only person allowed to say “you don’t know them like i do” bc you’ve never been wrong about those losers EVER your mind
WAH thank you 🥰 i need it to be known always that whatever brain cell i share with dan and phil it's also shared completely with my darling @freckliephil who's the reason i made this blog‼️ i'm just the one of us who's continued posting, for better or worse.
star trek writers in the 60s: these two guys have a deep loving bond that spans their lifetimes and is inherently tied to being queer, not only because of their own personal character arcs but because of the intentional subtext surrounding their relationship and the real life context at the time
star trek writers in the 21st century: two guys being dudes. they hate each other. you can have a little bit of friendship as a treat.
