EASTER WITH THE MILLERS 🐰 - HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
No outbreak!Joel Miller x f!wife!reader
A/N: Happy Easter everybody!
Tumblr media
• The Miller household wasn't that big when it came to Easter celebration, perhaps Joel could attend church but that was a long shot because he would usually be too tired and straight up lazy to go
• but other than that, he would just get Sarah some treats - and also himself, eating it late at night or just keeping in his candy stash and get some takeout and that was it
• even if they didn't actually have the habit of celebrating it per se, he would love whenever she came back from school Friday before Easter with paper made bunny ears and face painting; it melted his heart to no end and he would always take a picture of her, these were one of his favorites and after Sarah went to college, staring at them makes him tear up but he would never admit it, so you just have to pretend you didn't see it
• and once Sarah wasn't little anymore and went off to college, he stopped buying chocolate and stuff like that, and Easter became just a regular Sunday. Maybe he'd hang out with Tommy if he wasn't spending it with some chick, otherwise he would mow the lawn or something
• that was it until you came into his life, instead of lying on the couch eating takeout or leftovers, his holidays actually acquired meaning and joy because of you and your will to make Joel remember he's got a home, not just a house
• before the wedding, you'd very often spend it at your parents' or at some relative's place, sharing a big lunch and exchanging chocolate, he enjoyed it a lot, but he also missed something smaller and cozier so after you both officially got married, you two decided to spend Easter at home, even if it wasn't going to be like it used to be when Joel was single
• Instead, you'd start by decorating the house. You weren't a decoration freak but it wouldn't hurt to have perhaps a tablecloth, a centerpiece, or dishtowel Easter themed, also some decorative Easter bunny holding a basket with eggs in the front porch and stuff like that
• Joel found amusing to see it all, he actually loved to see how excited you got and how it full of love his house became; you were a real blessing for him
• for the menu, he would prepare his famous barbecue and you would also make your delicious casserole, Joel loves your casserole and he could eat it all by himself, so he would be really looking forward to it
• for dessert you'd make him anything he wants: chocolate cake, chocolate pie, chocolate pudding, chocolate cookies or whatever he chooses, the important thing is to him happy
• if the weather is good enough, you can set the table in the garden, but if lunch is inside, then it's also good, as long as you are spending it with your husband
• he chuckles when he sees you wearing the same bunny ears you had to wear at work during the week, it makes you look cute and also sexy but he always pretends to be annoyed when you place the bunny ears on him and even more so when you snap pictures of it
• and yes, he makes you wear the same bunny ears when you go to bed and you ride his cock at night, thankful to have spent another special day by your side, he couldn't have chosen a better wife than you ❤️

Easter Monday
pairing: Harry Styles x slavic(polish)!fem!reader
summary: Harry nad YN are spending their first Easter together, embracing their cultural differences. To celebrate Easter Monday Harry found something very interesting on the internet, hoping to make YN happy, he decided to surprise her with it - id didn't go as planned.
word count: ~1,3k (a little baby)
a/n: so i found out about this holiday in Poland and decided that it would make a fun, fluffy piece for the slavic!reader trope. if i got something wrong, please do tell me!
(another piece of wiriting with a slavic! reader is here > BRITs awards <)

Tumblr media
When Harry met YN, he promised himself to learn about Polish mores, some words to understand at least a part of what YN was talking about with her family back home and Polish food. Being a pescatarian excluded him from trying quite a few national dishes but YN found enough alternatives for him to eat. He loved it (or so he told YN).
Here he was, on Easter Sunday evening, researching Polish mores during Easter. For the first time in their relationship, they decided to spend those holidays together at Harry’s home in London.
The cultural differences were noticeable. YN didn’t grow up with Egg hunting on Sunday morning, but with going to church on Saturday to have food sacred. On Sunday morning there was an Easter breakfast - eggs (so many colourful eggs), the sour rye soup (yes, soup for breakfast) served in a round bread bowl, variable meat on the cold platter and, most importantly, cakes - mazurek and babka. Harry felt that he’d especially love those cakes.
Harry growing up didn’t do much for Easter. He enjoyed sleeping in for a few days, hunting eggs on Sunday and then going on with his life. His family never attached much importance towards Easter - they used those days for family time, hosting board games’ tournaments with a feast happening in the dining room.
So saying that YN’s way of celebrating was a shock for Harry was easily not enough.
“You want to celebrate the way that I’m used to?” She asked him two months before Easter.
“Yes.” He kissed her knuckles. “I want to spend it the way you always do. We’ll paint those colourful eggs and then eat this big breakfast.”
“Pisanki, those are the colourful eggs. And that big breakfast is almost not edible for you.”
“Because of meat?” YN nodded her head. “Well, then we’ll go to the local market and buy some plant based alternatives. Polish Easter breakfast with a twist. What do you say?”
“I love it.”
That was what they had done.
Harry invited his mother, sister and her fiancé to celebrate with them. All of them sat down with brushes and paint, and decorated the eggs. YN prepared the breakfast - with plant based sausage, and with two cakes baked just the way her grandma did, while Harry was responsible for taking care of the guests, saying “I’m so sorry, but I know, I’ll just ruin whatever you’re doing there, my love."
Everybody enjoyed breakfast, agreeing that soup being present was a mistake, but wasn’t untasty. Cakes did a furore - Anne asked for a recipe and Gemma promised to beg for them constantly. YN was happy that people appreciated her culture.
And when people left, just mere two hours ago, Harry and YN tidied up in the house and she went to sleep, he, on the other hand sat in front of his computer, searching. ‘What Poles do on Easter Monday?’ was a question tapped into a search bar. After clicking the first website linked, with a shock appearing on his face, eyebrows raising higher and higher with each word read, Harry stood up and went to the bedroom. He needed to visit a park tomorrow’s morning to get what was needed.
The next day YN woke up to a cold bed, which was more than expected - Harry was an early bird (woke up as early as 5 am) when YN liked to sleep until at least 6:30. After doing her morning stretches and going to the bathroom, she moved downstairs to start on the breakfast. Harry usually waited for her, so they could eat together and talk about their plans for a day.
“Harry! Baby! I’m making coffee, you want some?” She called into an (probably) empty house.
While not getting an answer, she went to the kitchen starting Harry’s fancy coffee machine. She needed caffeine.
It was strange that Harry didn’t leave any note, saying where he had gone. Nothing on the fridge, or under a fruit basket and no text either. She started to get worried when halfway through her first meal of the day Harry’s plate was still full and slowly getting cold.
Over the speakers, YN listened to Lana Del Rey’s album Ultraviolence, singing silently under her nose. She didn’t hear the back door slowly open and close. She didn’t hear the steps nearing her body. Most importantly, she didn’t hear the movement of the bucket full of water being directed at her.
“Ah!” She screeched when the cold water covered her whole body. From the top of her head to her toes, there was no dry spot. She was soaked and not in a good way.
“Happy śmigus-dyngus day!” Harry screamed, unconsciously murdering the language with a smile on his face, and started to hit YN with pussy willow branches.
“Harry! Are you out of your mind?” YN asked, trying to simultaneously flick the water from her face and catch the branch that had been continuously hitting her upper arm. “Harry, stop it!”
“What?” He asked, confused, stopping mid-air. “Why did you stop me? It’s a tradition!”
The ligt bulb switched on in YN's mind. She understood, for a moment looking at Harry with an open mouth and big eyes. “ Oh God!” She finally laughed. “Oh my God!”
“What - what is going on?”
“Harry, did you - did you find about this day on the internet?”
“Yes, obviously. Where would I get information about something like this from?” He still couldn’t comprehend the tradition that he was taking part of. What was the point of it?
“Maybe me. Someone that actually celebrates it?” YN prompted.
“I wanted to surprise you,” Harry said quietly, putting down the bucket and moving around the kitchen to get YN a clean tower.
“Listen - thank you -” she responded, after getting the towel, “- people don’t do it like this anymore.” She began drying herself off. “There is no hitting with branches. And not only boys are throwing water - it’s not gender-driven.”
Harry sat down in front of YN, getting sad.
“I’m sorry,” he apologised, clasping her hands in his. “I - I just wanted to do something that would make you feel like people around you know what you celebrate and do on specific holidays. ‘Supposed to be a surprise. Didn’t work. I’m sorry.” he kissed her knuckles, looking at her like a lost puppy. His eyes big and a little pout present on his lips.
“And I appreciate it so much.” She pecked his pout away, making him smirk. “These holidays, you've made me feel like I was back home. it means the most to me. Just didn’t like getting bitten up with a pussy willow.”
“Not a fan?” Harry’s smirk getting more daring.
“Not really. When it comes to Easter Monday, I’ve always just splashed people with water and called it a day. Well, when my cousins and I were younger, we used to just pour water on each other from the garden hose. It was entertaining. But always doing it outside of the house.” YN gave Harry a look towards the wet floor. “If not, we were cleaning not only the water but the whole house.”
“Am I going to be doing the same?” Harry asked with the same smirk from before, he enjoyed it.
“Yep. Absolutely.” YN stood up rapidly and moved to the closet to give Harry a mop. “Chop, chop!”
With a laugh, Harry gripped the mop and started cleaning. Unfortunately for him, the bucket he used was voluminous, and the amount of water on the floor was significant. While looking for the bucket to wring out the excess water, Harry lost his focus. Suddenly, his whole body started shivering from the cold liquid dripping from his head and down to the floor.
“Happy śmigus-dyngus day!” YN laughed at Harry.
Quickly enough, they both were running around the backyard - most clothes discarded in a run - under the rain of water from the garden hose. YN felt like a careless child again, and Harry decided just then he always wanted to see her that happy.
Sometimes misinformation on the internet could lead to good times, he thought. But only sometimes.

Justin: Hurry up and take the damn picture! We're going to be late for Mass!
Taylor: One more second...
Tumblr media
Ambrose: Dad, why do we have to go to church again? We already went on Thursday, and on Friday, and for four hours last night...
Gia: Duh! Because the Holy Triduum and Easter Sunday are the holiest, most important days of the year! Have you been sleeping through religion class or something?
Justin: Gia's right. Listen to your sister and quit your whining.
Zelie: Mommy, my arms hurt!
Tumblr media
Taylor: Hold just like that for one more second. If you're good during Mass, you can each have an extra chocolate bunny! Okay, everybody say cheese!

4, 19, 26 and 49 for Cheryl
8, 12, 17 and 46 for Susannah
Please and thank you :3
Sol, my love! 🥹🥹💕 Thank you for sending asks for my lil girlies!! These got a bit too long but I loved writing them!
Cheryl
4. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snacks - which do they look forward to the most?
Once she’s sent to the reform school, all her meals become one mushy blur. Just shoved through a slot in her door. But when she was released from solitary confinement and allowed to have lunch in the mess hall with the other teens, she looked forward to them. Usually, the portions were bigger and warmer.
Before the reform school though, she frequented diners, and she usually ordered lunch food. Sandwiches and fries, or a variety of. She likes to take trips from her town to NYC or even Canada. She rides a bus (sometimes hitchhikes) and walks around, checking out stores and diners. You’ll often find her tucked away in a booth, sometimes with one foot on the bench, completely in her own world.
9. What position do they like to sleep in?
On her side! Curled up like a C while hugging a pillow. She kind of looks like a child, and in the short while that she’s asleep is the only time you can really see her at peace.
26. Surprise birthday party! How do they react?
She steps through the door, the lights switch on, everybody shouts “Surprise!”, and there’s this genuine look of fear on her face. She’s already stepped back. Then, she looks around, sees all the smiling, caring people, the candles on the birthday cake, and more importantly the name on the banner and the fear gives way to confusion and finally tears. Someone cared enough. Someone liked her enough to throw her a real party. She’s never been so happy in so long.
49. Do they have any scars? How did they get them?
She does, but nothing remarkable. She has scrapes and deep cuts that have scarred over. Nothing iodine or laceration glue couldn’t fix (Yes, including the wounds she got from getting beat up). Cheryl likes the sting of alcohol and iodine on her wounds. Hates gauze. Does not like it when it sticks to the skin 😬
Susannah
8. What do they wear to bed?
Ruffly nightdresses she makes herself. The designs are reminiscent of the Regency Era. If Odile or “Alice” or Ophelia ever ended up staying with the Todds at their farm, Susannah’s going to gift her some of these 🥹💕 She knows they aren’t Ophelia’s style but she’ll assure her they’re very comfy.
12. It’s a rainy day, what will they do cooped up inside all day?
She’s rushing out to take the laundry off the line, and then settles on cleaning indoors. Once her usual chores are done, she’ll find time to mend her siblings clothes while listening to the radio. If Darrell or Judah are around, she’ll watch a movie with them. Their choices are always full of romance and incredibly melodramatic. Of course, she grabs the remote to skip the kissing/intimate scenes for Judah’s sake.
17. What’s their favorite time of the year and why?
Spring! Around the time for Easter. She finds everything so symbolic and beautiful, with all the flowers blooming again. She usually goes all out on Easter Sunday. The meals are more extravagant than on Thanksgiving or Christmas, and the house is decorated with flowers, chocolate/painted eggs, and little banners Salome made!
46. Do they have a sweet tooth?
Oh, she loves cakes and pies! But she’s careful not to eat too much because she’s very conscious about her weight.

😎Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!!!!! ( December 25 ) I have come bearing Christmas/ Holiday thoughts and presents for everyone.
Christmas was a bit different for Wolverine R when she was growing up because back in the day they would put candles in the Christmas trees for the light decorations, put popcorn garlands in the trees as well. And probably a few other things, it must have blown R’s mind when people started putting actual electric lights for decorations instead of candles and the like. Egg nog was invented in the 14th century so medieval times meaning that R grew up enjoying it ( she of course puts vodka or whiskey or whatever alcohol in the egg nog as a adult) . She went to mass for Christmas, Easter and all the important holidays as well as very Sunday before her presentation of her mutation. She was also taught to light candles at church ( like you can pay to light candles) for lost souls or passed love ones . So even after the presentation of her mutation and it was like 70 years between when the last time she celebrated Christmas as a child ( 70 years between 1844 when she was twelve to 1914 when she celebrated it again with Esther Hudson in WWI) to celebrate it again as a adult ( R was 82 years old in 1914 ) R still enjoys all the lights / decorations, the egg nog , she still lights up candles ( one candle to represent her family- John Howlett , Quincy SR , Kit , Marry Morris - one to represent all the friends and people she cares about- one to represent all the innocent people she can’t save or the innocents she killed ( when she wasn’t in control or wrong place and time as she would never have killed anyone innocent on purpose) . She doesn’t go into churches , she has individual candles as well as ….. not prayers because she doesn’t believe that her prayers would be heard anywhere ( if they ever were in the first place) but quite meditation or just quiet reflection or just quiet peaceful time for the people whom she lost ( loved ones or innocents that she couldn’t save or unfortunately killed) . After Weapon X , losing her old friend ( in the movie Wolverine lost his lady love in 1980 ) so I think that she hasn’t celebrated since 1979 …. That is until this year because there is no way in hell that the students and Nat and Rogue are going to let her sneak off or not let her not participate in the festivities. But in that time between 1979 and now , she still has those little things about the holiday season even if she doesn’t remember the significance of the candles and meditation she still does light three individual candles and does that quiet meditation every year WITHOUT FAIL .
R would want to make sure this is a good holiday for the kids ( especially HER KIDS) and making sure that Nat has a good memories and holidays as Nat never had any Holidays. R is helping all the really little kids or really young students write their letters to Santa , they ( the kids ) make her her wear a Santa hat or maybe a elf one . She is helping out decorating the school and asking Nat and her kids ( rouge and all the kids she adopted but wouldn’t admit that she adopted) what they would want or what traditions they have / want to do. R is asking Nat what would she would like to experience . People are asking R about Christmas when she was young ( they are sneakily trying to get some of her traditions and making her holiday great for her as she has always been doing so much for others) .
In the SB universe when the Eastern Siblings were younger Yelena 1000 percent run into Nat’s room and jumped on her yelling that “ Santa came , Natty!!!!! Santa came !!!!” Every Single CHRISTMAS!!!!!! ( I used to do this when I was younger with my own big sister so I know what I am talking about) Yelena was the ONLY PERSON ( a part from Kate )whom was could EVER woke Nat up that abruptly and do all of that and NOT DIE ….. hell the only one that could WAKE UP Nat PERIOD and not DIE . So when the Eastern European family all lived together the parents ( Alexie and Melina) ever had to wake up Nat then they sent Yelena to do so ( Nat would usually have a alarm clock set if she Had to wake up for whatever reason but naturally woke up most of the time ) because knew that Nat would kill them but not her baby sister(s) . I don’t know which sibling of the beef siblings is the older one, I don’t know if SB is the oldest or the youngest but the oldest beef sibling was the one that got jumped on every Christmas.
Again, please don't mind me being very late to this party...
I think present-day R secretly loves celebrating the holidays because she likes how excited and happy the kids (even the teenagers) get over it. Even though she doesn't remember how she used to celebrate or what she used to enjoy, she knows it's a special time for a lot of them and wants to make each year good for the kids.
R would make Christmas extra special for Nat this year (because it was the first time she got to celebrate in years). She would make sure she gets to help with the decorations, the ornaments, and even asks Jean to make Nat her own stocking for the fireplace. And over and over, Nat is just shocked at how welcoming this whole X-Men family is.
It's been a while, but I think SB is the oldest sibling? Someone will have to go back through your asks, I can't fully remember anymore lol.

Sunday 9th April, Easter Sunday.
Happy Easter, everybody! 🐣
After a breakfast of boiled eggs and soldiers 😃 we went to the office to pay.
When we came to France in 2017 we gave up our berth at Brixham marina. There was no guarantee that we would get it back in 2 years time. This time we have kept it on as we are away for just 3 months. However, still being bertholders it means we can take part in Passeports Escales. This is a scheme where, if you sign out of your own marina, you can get up to 5 nights per year (a maximum of 2 nights per visit) completely FREE of charge in 160 marinas between Belgium & Morocco, and there’s loads in Brittany. St.Helier was free and the first 2 here will be free too. Nice.
After breakfast we went for a walk around the headland to Solidor.
Tumblr media
The walk was a bit of a climb at first but it soon became a nice flat walk way. Wild and rather quiet, you can see a superb panorama of the sea, Dinard, and also Saint-Malo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were some heavy fortifications up here.
The Battle of Saint-Malo was fought between Allied and German forces to control the French coastal town of Saint-Malo during World War II. The battle formed part of the Allied breakout across France and took place between 4 August and 2 September 1944. United States Army units, with the support of Free French and British forces, successfully assaulted the town and defeated its German defenders. The German garrison on a nearby island continued to resist until 2 September.
Saint-Malo was one of the French towns designated as a fortress under the German Atlantic Wall program, and its pre-war defenses were expanded considerably before the Allied landings in Normandy during June 1944. There were several gun emplacements on our walk, and boy, did they take a battering!
Tumblr media
You can see the next one in the distance. Each one heavily pock-marked. Unfortunately, when the Germans withdrew they destroyed so much of the infrastructure that it was impossible for the Allies to use the port.
Our walk took us the Solidor Tower which is a strengthened keep with three linked towers, located in the estuary of the river Rance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was built between 1369 and 1382 by John V, Duke of Brittany to control access to the Rance at a time when the city of Saint-Malo did not recognize his authority. Over the centuries the tower lost its military interest and became a jail. It is now a museum celebrating Breton sailors exploring Cape Horn.
You can just make out the hydro-electric barrage in the background.
We ventured towards Solidor.
In the small park "Jardin" there is a beautiful sculpture. This is could be easily overlooked as the color of the sculpture doesn't particularly stand out from its surroundings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It pays homage to Commander Charcot (who it seems was a bit of a ‘Flashheart’ character) and the crew of the Pourquoi-Pas, which disappeared at sea on September 16, 1936. It is a gift from the Republic of Iceland.
Jean-Baptiste Charcot, often called Commander Charcot was born on July 15, 1867 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and died September 16, 1936 at sea (30 miles northwest of Reykjavik), was a doctor, French polar explorer and a French naval officer.
A sportsman, he was French rugby union champion in 1896 and was also a double silver medalist in sailing at the 1900 Summer Olympics.
We continued a few steps into Solidor and took refreshment at one of the very busy hostelries sitting outside in the warm sun looking over the bay. How very pleasant. 😎
We walked back to the boat to prepare our late Easter Sunday lunch of crab and shell-on prawns that we had bought in St.Helier. All washed down with a bottle of rosé. Lovely.

Moncton Easter egg hunt brings Biker Bunny to town
In most houses, the Easter bunny visits in the middle of the night, but in Moncton, he shows up on a motorcycle.
Biker Bunny started eight years ago, bringing more than just chocolate to the city. His goal is to deliver happiness.
“Just the reactions,” he said. “The reactions of everybody from two to 92, there’s no age limit to get a smile out of a motorcycle-riding Easter bunny. It’s never been done before around here.”
Over Easter weekend, the bunny had a full schedule with 12 hour days planned for both Saturday and Sunday, including over 100 homes to visit throughout the city.
“The thing is with the price of everything going up, families are working double-time just to pay the mortgage, feed the kids, there’s no parent-kid time anymore,” he said. “So, if I can break that cycle by driving through the neighbourhood and getting a picture and getting a couple of smiles, even if it only lasts a few minutes, it makes it all worth it in the end.”
One of his first weekend stops was at Pinehurst Park for a community-wide Easter egg hunt. Nearly 50 kids and their families came out for a morning of excitement on Saturday.
For Oleksii Titov, Dina Titova and their two children, it is their first Easter celebration in Canada after fleeing Ukraine last year.
“It’s unusual,” said Titov. “We have Easter in Ukraine, but it is different what we do. We don’t have an Easter bunny. We usually go into the church, all night we’re in the church, we’ll make some bread for Easter, we paint eggs every Easter and we crush the eggs,” he adds.
However, the family is excited to participate and take on a new tradition.
“We’re very happy because in our country, it’s not a good situation now and in Canada we feel free and it’s most important for our family and also our kids,” said Titova.
“In Canada and Ukraine, it looks different. For us, it’s very beautiful. Our host family, where we live after we come [to] Canada, they share information about celebrate Easter, and for our family, it is so interesting.”
The neighbourhood hunt started last year. Daphne Hachey says it was a way to get everyone back together following COVID-19 lockdowns.
“I just put it on Facebook, if anyone wanted to come and be involved and participate, and everyone in the community seemed really excited and wanted to do it,” she said.
It’s also a collaborative effort. Every parent goes and decorates the park ahead of the hunt so that there are enough treats for every kid who wants to participate.
“It’s so great and hopefully we’re going to spark some core memories in these little guys and everyone just wants to come out and hang out with everybody,” said Hachey.
On top of bringing the community together, seeing the Biker Bunny and having fun over the holiday, the community also helped raise money for kids in need.
“The Biker Bunny raises money for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program so I just had a donation box and I was collecting money from anyone that wanted to donate,” said Hachey. “This year, we donated $148 to them, so that was really great. Last year, we donated about $75, so hopefully it keeps growing every year.”

Code Red
Tumblr media
You had to have a code. You know, even if only because it sounds good when you say it out loud. People are suckers for that sort of thing. I kill people. Oh no! But I have a code. Oh, that's all right then. It doesn't really matter what it is: some vague banalities, a handful of platitudes that everybody follows anyway. It gives the impression that your work is underpinned by some veneer of morality, or at least the rules of civilisation. That's good. Nobody wants to hire a savage.
With a code under your belt, you aren't just a soulless murderer who would do anything for the right price. Of course, the irony is that talking about the code is great for business, like a USP to differentiate yourself from the common or garden hitmen out there, to make your clients think they're getting a more prestigious service. A killer with discretion. Somebody they could trust, even though the whole thing is basically a scam.
No children or animals. That's always a good one. As if anyone would hire you to off the neighbour's chihuahua, even if it was being particularly yappy. Few people have any desire to hurt someone's kids or pets - and even if they did, they're pretty easy prey without professional help. Nobody hires a high-level assassin for that kind of job, and so the rule is never actually tested. That's the beauty of making a big deal about your code. You can get rewarded for the stuff that you were doing anyway.
The rules can be as arbitrary as you like. I don't hurt innocents is another one of mine, like anyone's itching to shell out five figures to bump someone who hasn't done anything wrong. I'm not looking to kill any saints, or martyr any new ones, but I've never actually been asked to. There's always a reason behind the hit, always some real or imagined guilt, even if the client's verdict wouldn't exactly stand up in a court of law. I never said I had the same burden of proof.
Only quick, clean deaths is another one that makes me sound like a world-class empath, when really I just like to get the job done as efficiently as possible. I'm not about to make a mess when I can shoot the target in the head. Why would I? That's just piling more risk onto my own back. I'm not doing the dead guy any favours in making it quick, removing any chance for him to defend himself, to raise the alarm for the police, or get my DNA under his fingernails. I'm only being merciful to myself.
Nothing less than $10k is just me looking after my bank account, but it does help to present yourself as exclusive. People want a premium service. They might have been happy to pay that anyway, but not as keen to commission a clean, professional hit from somebody who's also a back-alley butcher for those clients on a budget. I know, it's messed up, but I don't make the rules. Or I only make my own ones. You know what people are like. If it exists, customers will be snobs about it.
Then there are the weird ones, just to pad out the list. No jobs on Sundays. I'm not even religious, but it really adds that extra façade of dignity, doesn't it? Nobody over retirement age. That just brings some symmetry to the kid thing. There's definitely a market of people wanting old-timers dead, but it's not a massive chunk of the business, and I'm happy enough to let nature take its course. No veterans. It's good to seem like a patriot. Besides, I'm always less keen to go after a guy with combat experience.
But then I got the offer. It came in a letter, unsigned, promising $100k on completion of the job - ten times my minimum rate, and enough to keep me in ammunition for the foreseeable future. In fact, I would barely need to use any more for a while. But the job itself was weird. Some old major from the Navy, with specific instructions to hit him on his way to church on Easter Sunday, two weeks from now.
That's a handful of my rules in tatters all at once. One or two might be an accident, clients who forgot a detail or didn't bother to read my terms, but the three least important ones, the ones I'd simply made up, and none of the rest? I don't see many jobs like this, with that level of specificity, coming around by coincidence. Somebody has asked me this on purpose - with that price calculated to tempt me just enough to bend the code I claim to keep. Like they're seeing what I'll say. Like it's some sort of test.
