What are your thoughts on Jack and Kate in “The Little Prince”

Not a fan of that episode, tbh. It's most probably due to the fact that I fail to get what it's trying to tell me. Like, if you title an episode "The Little Prince", I expect something that has to do with the book. As I said, this is probably just me not getting the reference but the episode is supposed to be about Aaron and yet Aaron is hardly seen in it.

First of all, I hate that they write Kate deciding to keep Aaron because she can't deal with losing another person and neither her nor Jack mention Claire in that conversation. They don't even mention the fact that Kate helped Claire give birth to Aaron, therefore feeling responsible for that kid wouldn't have been a far-fetched thought. But they re-show that moment in the same episode? WTF? I think they course-corrected it a few episodes after this one, where they wrote Claire as Kate's motivation to go back to the island. Bah. I'm sorry but, to me, this isn't insightful writing and it's actually kinda boring.

Secondly, this all reflects bad on Jack too because they wrote him act like a total asshole towards Aaron for no good reason if we wanna be honest. Like, this man had already spent almost 3 years living together with that kid but in this episode, and the following ones as well, he doesn't really seem to care about him.

And yeah, okay, he was being manipulated by Ben and was "recovering" from his addictions but then let's decide the actual weight addictions hold in Jack's story because they can't be an excuse for all the "bad" things he does. Things just don't add up.

As a result, Jack seems rather clingy and demanding when he almost requests that Kate drop everything she was doing and "choose" him over THEIR son. which isn't great.

I just don't think Aaron's storyline is well thought out. If you try and make it make sense you're bound to recognize that Jack first and Kate second acted like total selfish assholes towards that baby. If you want the characters to make sense, on the other hand, you're bound to find a story that's just... bad.

In both instances you'll see what the actual problem is: Aaron's story is never his (and Claire's) story but it was used as a means to talk about Kate and Jack's story and how codependent they've become after the island. Because parenting a child would have inevitably CHANGED these characters but the main narrative dictated that they couldn't change otherwise they would've never wanted to go back to the island.

So we got Aaron as The Little Prince, aka a story about how cute and blonde this kid is but there's nothing really behind it. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeaux, indeed.
