Just a short update today, before we leave the Dashwoods and drop in on another family.

Harry's new school friend Phineas is a bit of an oddity it seems - following Alice and John around the house to pull faces at them, for no apparent reason.

Despite his eccentricities, he and Harry seem to get along quite amicably.

And of course - as always - Phineas and his cousin Annabel (who also happens to be Daniel's niece - it's complicated) come as a package deal.

Harry's social circle is also enlarged by getting acquainted with Alasdair, from across the road.

It's now time for the oldest child John to put away childish things.

5 characters from your favorite books whose real ages are hard to guess

As we enthusiastically leaf through another book, we vividly imagine the appearance and character of all the heroes of the story. But sometimes film adaptations of literary works turn out to be so memorable that we involuntarily replace the existing image with what was shown to us on the screen. And we unwittingly add extra years to the character or, on the contrary, make him younger.

Severus Snape from "Harry Potter"

Snape once attended Hogwarts with Harry's parents, so when the young wizard first appears at school, the Potions professor is relatively young - only 31 years old. The filmmakers invited Alan Rickman, who was 54 years old at the time of filming, to play the role of this controversial character. Therefore, on screen Severus looks more experienced and sophisticated than he really was.

Ellie from "The Notebook"

In the novel by Nicholas Sparks, at the beginning of the story, the main character, Ellie, is 15 years old. The creators of the film adaptation decided to add a couple of years to her so that the girl would be a little more mature. So they cast Rachel McAdams, who was 24 at the time. Considering that the main events unfold 7 years after the heroes met, such a decision is completely justified.

Elinor Dashwood from "Sense and Sensibility"

In Jane Austen's novel Sense and Sensibility, Elinor's older sister was 19 years old. But in almost all film adaptations the girl was played by older actresses. For example, Emma Thompson was 36 years old at the time filming began. Thanks to this, the creators were able to achieve a more authentic image of the reserved and reasonable Elinor, which the young actress would hardly have been able to create.

Rubeus Hagrid from "Harry Potter"

Hargrid in the film version looks quite young for his age. According to JK Rowling, he was born in 1928, which means that by the time he met Harry he was already 62 years old. Actor Robbie Coltrane, who played this role, was only 50 years old. Perhaps the filmmakers decided that Rubeus aged a little differently than ordinary people, since he was half giant.

Ashley Wilkes from "Gone with the Wind"

At the beginning of the novel, young Scarlett invites her neighbor's son Ashley, with whom she is hopelessly in love, to run away from home and tie the knot. At that time the young man was 21 years old. However, in the film he seems much older, which is not surprising - the actor Leslie Howard, who played this role, was 45 years old. Therefore, the on-screen relationship between Scarlett and Ashley looks ambiguous - a wise man carefully refuses the eccentric girl. The audience gets the feeling that Wilkes was the same age as Rhett Butler, although in fact the difference in the characters' ages was more than 10 years (Rhett was 33 years old).

By the way, the appearance of literary heroes also sometimes changes when transferred to the screen. Some differences are not noticed by the attentive public, while others are simply noticeable.

Why didn't the Bennet family adopt an heir, do you think? I mean, Frank Churchill was adopted for that reason, so it was allowed. There were plenty of orphans around back then. And if the kid had to be of higher class to begin with, couldn't the Bennets have taken on a boy from a family in similar situations to the Dashwoods or Prices?

Oh I know this one! It was because there was an entail in default of heirs male, which would be specified as "heirs of his body", so adopted children need not apply. You also couldn't use a natural child. It must be a male child, of Mr. Bennet, born in legal matrimony. Otherwise it moves to the next in the male line (Mr. Collins).

Enscombe must not have had an entail, meaning that the Churchills could leave it to whomever they wanted. They chose Frank. Similarly, Uncle Dashwood was able to leave his estate to whomever he wanted (he chose Little Harry, through Mr. Dashwood and John Dashwood), Mrs. Smith was able to choose her heir in Sense & Sensibility (it was Willoughby), and Mrs. Ferrars could choose to leave parts of her fortune to whichever child she chose (why Fanny sucks up to her mom so much, she could inherit too). This means that all of these estates were not entailed.

If the estate was not entailed, the Bennets could have left it to their daughters. Interestingly, if they had wanted to preserve the estate, they could have made Jane, as the eldest child, the primary heiress (ie given her the bulk of the estate as a dowry) and then made it a condition of the marriage that the husband changed his name to Bennet. That would allow the estate to carry on the family line and maintain the prestige and wealth of the Bennet family.

The Dashwood Family Album: Volume XXVI

Don't ask me, kiddo! Harry is baffled by baking this fine Saturday morning.

Eventually, breakfast is served - if a little burnt - and Clara rather oddly opts for salmon. (That's actually the leftovers from the fish that were caught on her 13th birthday, but I'm not going to tell her it's several years past its eat-by date...)

She also proves that she's always up for a game of cops and robbers.

Littlest Matilda is thankfully feeling more chipper about life these days - especially now that she can toddle about all by herself!

But sadly, while everyone was busy with their own weekend pursuits, Grim came to claim faithful and loveable George, leaving only his urn behind to show that he was ever there. 😥

FIM DO HALLOWEEN AFTER DARK

Depois da troca de corpos, você finalmente pôde aproveitar a festa da maneira que imaginava, mas sempre olhando por cima do ombro, em busca de algo suspeito. E não, não tinha nada a ver com o cara vestido de Michael Myers ou com o Gandalf do bar de poções, que você resolvera evitar o resto da noite depois da pequena brincadeira de Jean Luc Dragna.

Havia algo estranho no ar, e você não sabia dizer direito o que era. Talvez fossem as celebridades que apareceram na festa, lá por volta das duas da manhã. Você tem certeza de que era o Henry Cavill por trás daquela máscara do Jason com uma camisa do Brasil, mas também poderia ser Liam Hemsworth, ou qualquer um desses bombadões que andam fazendo filme de heróis em 2024, mas que há dez anos trás eram apenas frangos...

Enfim, essa sensação de que algo ruim iria acontecer se confirmou realidade quando as altas sirenes tocaram a plenas alturas, com as luzes vermelhas e azuis invadindo as janelas da casa da Kappa Sigma, com o local rapidamente sendo tomado por homens de uniformes pretos. Um sorriso de felicidade surgiu na cara de Ben O'Leary (@thedelinquentoleary), que você não sabia se era alegria ou se era constipação, só sabe que era bem fora da caixinha, até mesmo pra ele. No final quem não conseguiu fugir, acabou num carro de polícia. Você mesmo, se não fosse o punhe..., bem, se não fosse o esquisitão do Leonard Hofferson tentando passar a mão na perna de Malina Calloway (@thelcser), enquanto você tentava fugir, ou se Blaise, aquele francês enorme e metido, não estivesse atrapalhando a única porta de saída, metendo um "você sabe com quem está falando?"

Estava sendo levado para dentro do carro quando você balançou a cabeça percebendo que Gwen Vickers (@nascitadiveneres), Vincent Kingsley (@thefallen), Jacob Harris (@jacobisalive), Celeste Lockheart (@thebclly), Emma Dashwood (@emmadhw), Jocelyn Jenkins (@pretxnder), Harper Wang (@chefhwang) e Harvey Wang (@thxversatile) conseguiram fugir quando Riley Kalman (@thepartyanimalkalman) e Lucien Dragna (@thetrickxter) entraram numa das viaturas e ficaram dando derrapadas na entrada da rua, enquanto os policiais corriam atrás, desesperados, sem saber como algo assim havia acontecido. É claro que os dois foram presos, mas deu tempo suficiente para boa parte da festa conseguisse sair do local.

O que ninguém contava era que todos iriam se encontrar nas celas da Polícia Universitária da UCLA, que já havia sido prontamente avisada por alguma denuncia anônima. Todos os alunos foram liberados pela manhã, após uma bronca e uma advertência do Reitor Robertson-Smith. Você achou curioso que ele estivesse com os pés de sapatos trocados e meias diferentes, algo bastante peculiar para um homem como ele e notou quando Victoria Griffin (@vicgriffinn) tirou uma foto discretamente em seu celular.

Quando acordou, ainda com uma ressaca horrível de bebida barata, praguejando por George Wheeler, presidente da Kappa Sigma, ser tão mão de vaca. Não pode deixar de reparar na foto ao lado do seu celular. Balançou a cabeça algumas vezes, esfregou os olhos, e respirou fundo antes de olhar a foto mais uma vez. Era uma polaroide da foto de registro que você tirou quando entrou na cela da Polícia do Campus. Mas não era bem você, era seu eu do futuro... 10 anos envelhecido. Como isso era possível? Você não tem muito tempo pra pensar, diante dos seus olhos, uma marca de queimadura de revelação surge no canto da foto. Você tem certeza absoluta que viu isso acontecendo naquele exato momento. Parecia que alguém havia superexposto a foto durante a revelação, ou a tinta estava muito velha e saindo da foto.
