MY NEXT GAME
Hi, so I'm postponing my previous platformer because I'm tired of thinking about physics.
So I want to make a farming game.
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, I dont like Stardew Valley. It's not a bad game, but when it comes to farming games, it's not my cup of tea.
I feel like what most people are looking for in their farming games is more of a life sim type game, which to be fair Harvest Moon has been since the start.
But my favorite farming sim game is Harvest Moon for the Gameboy Color. I played it via the virtual console on the 3ds and I loved it.
First off the limited hardware meant they had to cut a lot of stuff. They managed to still include marriage and children, but I never worked out how to interact with those mechanics. And I didnt need to because I was too busy FARMIIIIING.
Harvest Moon for the GBC was the fundamental farming mechanics distilled down, and it's all you did.
Also in this harvest moon game, the shipping guy who buys your stuff showes up at 5pm. About 3/4ths the way through the day.
Meaning when your crops were done growing you had to HUSTLE to get them put into the shipping box inorder to maximize your profit, and the ammount of crops you can grow the next day.
And that rush of getting your crops put away was incredible fun. Fast paced action to cap off a long stretch of repetitive, yet satisfying, gameplay
So many farming games try to make the planting and growing process easier, by making you able to walk on plants or with sprinklers and stuff. But I want the opposite. I want my game to be all about space and time management.
First off I am thinking of having the delivery guy pickup crops twice or maybe once a week. Forcing you to plan ahead, or store them somewhere.
I also want everything to be done one at a time. Harvesting, watering, etc. In HM GBC you could only hold one item at a time, causing you to run back and forth between your crops and the shipping box. I kinda liked this because it meant you had to layout your farm in such a way that allowed you to move through it efficiently.
Something I want to introduce is CRATES which can hold 8 items of the same type. And they have to be pushed around, kinda like sokoban boxes. I might toy with this a little, maybe allow you to pull them as well. This will make it so you have to be clever with your farm and storage layouts. And to minimize you running back and forward between the farm and the shipping box.
And instead of a shipping box I want an area you can place down crates. And possibly stack them? Again I want to force the player to be clever with how they store their goods. My biggest issue with this is I dont want to limit the ammount of produce you can sell. If you get your shit to the delivery spot in time you get your money.
On top of that I have ideas for crops that require certain configurations inorder to grow. Special soil types that promote the growth of certain crops and harms others. Machines that process crops into higher value products, but take up a lot of space. Maybe special orders to challenge you to grow a certain amount of crops in a period of time.
I gots ideas basically. Right now I've got a video in the works breaking down my progress so far. Super early technical stuff. Expect it soon!
All in all I'm excited to dive into this project. And we'll see what happens, if things go well I may finish it. If not I'll postpone it and work on ThreeEye again.
And as for the tech I'm using, I'm working in C again. Currently I'm using SDL but I may swap the graphics out with Sokol or BGFX in the future.

Photosensitivity-safe games for the Nintendo Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance
I recently picked up an old Gameboy again (the original Gameboy Advance model to be specific) to see if my photosensitivity would fare better with a non-backlit screen… to my dismay I discovered that although the intensity of lighting effects is diminished there are still a lot of flashing animations that bother my eyes and give me headaches. I’ve been working on combing through the entire catalogue of games released for the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance to find the most photosensitivity-safe games for us to play! None of the games on this list make use of any flashing animations.
For the record, I didn’t try to line this article up with the recent release of the Gameboy emulation on the Nintendo Switch Online, the timing was just a happy synchronicity. Unfortunately none of the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, or Gameboy Advance games that were recently added to the Nintendo Switch Online are photosensitivity-safe, they all make use of flashing light animations. Used Gameboys for sale can be found on eBay, at resale shops, thrift stores, and garage sales around the world.
Gameboy Dig Dug Hyper Lode Runner Megalit Motocross Maniacs (the new track record screen has flashing text, but at a fairly slow rate) Prince of Persia (the flickering candles are easier on the eyes on a non-backlit screen, also on Gameboy Color) World Bowling
Gameboy games can be played on Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Light, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance Micro, Gameboy Advance SP, Super Gameboy adapter for Super Nintendo, and the Gameboy Advance adapter for the Gamecube.
Gameboy Color Frogger GBC Harvest Moon GBC (the sudden flash of the bright white segue screens between buildings/areas is way too too hard on the eyes on a backlit screen, but is fine on the Gameboy Color or original Gameboy Advance. Weeds disappear-flash briefly as you clear them from the field) Harvest Moon GBC 3 (the sudden flash of the bright white segue screens between buildings/areas is way too too hard on the eyes on a backlit screen, but is fine on the Gameboy Color or original Gameboy Advance. Weeds disappear-flash briefly as you clear them from the field) Pocket Bowling (press start quickly as the title screen has flashing text, the sudden flash of the bright white segue screens is hard on the eyes on a backlit screen or rom, but is fine on the Gameboy Color or original Gameboy Advance) Prince of Persia (the flickering candles are easier on the eyes on a non-backlit screen, also on Gameboy) NBA 3 on 3 Featuring Kobe Bryant Road Rash (there are brief flashes of white screen between publisher intros, this isn’t an issue on non-backlit screens or you can look away for 10 seconds after powering the system on, additionally road lines may be dizzying) Triple Play Baseball 2001 (turn “cutscene movies” off to avoid a flashing sign after getting a homerun)
Gameboy Color games can be played on Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance Micro, Gameboy Advance SP, and the Gameboy Advance adapter for the Gamecube. Gameboy color games can also be played on the original Gameboy with a very limited color palette, but only the black Gameboy Color cartridges and Pokémon games will work, the see-through Gameboy Color cartridges will not work. See the “Dual Mode” column on this page for the full list: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Game_Boy_Color_games
Gameboy Advance Chessmaster Classic NES: Dr. Mario (press start quickly as the title screen has some flashing colors, colorblindness may be an issue when playing on the non-backlit Gameboy Advance screen) Classic NES: Ice Climber (falling icicles are a little hard on the eyes on a backlit screen or rom, but they’re fine on the non-backlit original Gameboy Advance) Killer 3D Pool NHL 2002 (the goal siren light is hard on the eyes on a backlit screen or rom, but isn’t nearly as intense on the non-backlit original Gameboy Advance) Madden NFL 2005 Rebelstar: Tactical Command Scooby-Doo Super Monkey Ball Jr. Tetris Worlds (avoid looking directly at the shimmering star next to the currently selected option on the main menu, there are also some flames flickering in the background of the volcano level, otherwise the core gameplay is safe) Texas Hold ’Em Poker Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2002 (press start quickly as the title screen has flashing text) Top Gear Rally
Gameboy Advance games can be played on the Nintendo Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance Micro, Gameboy Advance SP, DS, DS Lite, and the Gameboy Advance adapter for the Gamecube.
If you know of any more photosensitivity-safe games for the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance please leave a comment and let us know!
This post can also be read and listened to (text-to-speech) on my Medium page at: https://medium.com/@AbleGaming/photosensitivity-safe-games-for-the-nintendo-gameboy-gameboy-color-and-gameboy-advance-1cbeac012aee

Chase Koeneke's Top 25 Game Boy & Game Boy Color Games
The final part in GOTG's GB & GBC Top 25 coverage, make sure you check out my good friend Giggy's list, as well as the shared list we made together on the most recent episode of the podcast.
While the NES was my very first brush with video games, it wasn’t until the Game Boy that I truly fell in love with gaming. For a kid who got taken on a lot of long car trips, it was a godsend (both to me, but probably even more so to my parents, who could drive in relative peace). I dumped hundreds of hours into many of these games, and some of them continue to rank within my all-time favorites.
25. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
24. Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble
23. Pokemon Pinball
22. Tiny Toons Adventures: Babs’ Big Break
21. Metal Gear Solid (Ghost Babel)
20. Shantae
19. Harvest Moon 3 GBC
18. Balloon Kid
17. Mario’s Picross
16. Mole Mania
15. Mega Man V
14. Super Mario Land
13. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
12. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
11. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
10. Mario Tennis
I’m not usually a big sports game guy. I find the ways devs abstract a sport through mechanics interesting, but often, their efforts fall short. I’d prefer to just hitting the batting cages than play Game Boy Baseball, y’know? But that’s not the case with Mario Tennis. Camelot aced this one, with simple, responsive controls that offered hidden depth in its strategic play. And the light RPG elements let you shape your character to better fit your play style (then import that character into the N64 incarnation!)
9. Warlocked
I didn’t grow up with a PC, so the real-time strategy genre was always something of a mystery to me. Warlocked was the first RTS I ever got my hands on, and while I can’t say it’s a particularly glowing example of the genre, the fact it even works on a Game Boy Color is astonishing to me. I ran the wheels off this game, playing through both its campaigns and collecting all the colorful wizard characters (Sweatwiz for life!)
8. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
Zelda continues to not be my thing, but the Oracle games are generally my favorites of the entire franchise (which feels wrong since they’re made by Capcom). Of the pair, I prefer Seasons’ mechanics. Plus, I really love exploring Subrosia — a volcanic land sitting right below the overworld — and interacting with its Jawa-looking residents. Most people are going to prefer Link’s Awakening, and that’s fine, but for my money, Oracle of Season is the way to go.
7. Donkey Kong ’94
It’s unfair how good this game is. The movement tech Mario can achieve is unreal, and it forever changed the way we think about Mario’s moveset. If you’ve ever enjoyed the triple jumps of Super Mario 64 or the cap throwing and diving of Mario Odyssey, you have DK ’94 to thank for inspiring it all. This game takes the original arcade game, and expands it into one of the greatest puzzle-platformers of all time.
6. Tetris
It’s Tetris. I mean, what else needs to be said? Later versions have added slight tweaks to the formula in the form of T-spins or holding pieces that make them arguably better, but whenever I want to play some Tetris, this is always the one I reach for.
5. Kirby’s Dream Land 2
Tumblr media
Creator Masahiro Sakurai has said the original Kirby’s Dream Land is all about introducing people to what a platform game is. Dream Land 2, in my opinion, is about introducing you to what they can be. The copy abilities brought in from Kirby’s Adventure are expanded threefold with the addition of Kirby’s animal companions, and the music from the battle with King Dedede still bangs. This will forever be my favorite Kirby game.
4. Mario Golf
Tumblr media
I gushed about Mario Tennis above, but it can feel repetitive at times as you play set after set on nearly-identical courts. Mario Golf brings in everything good about Tennis (the RPG elements, character importing, great controls) and applies it to a sport that naturally has a little more variety through its courses, challenging you to approach them in different ways. Pick up both if you can, but if you only have room for one, Golf is the way to go.
3. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
Tumblr media
The second generation of Pokemon games add so much to the series, both from a mechanical perspective with new types, held items, additional HM moves, breeding and more. But maybe more importantly, Gold, Silver and Crystal surprise and delight in a way that make you feel like you’re in a living and breathing world. It can be annoying for those going back to the games now, but having a real-time day and night cycle affecting the Pokemon you could catch felt revolutionary. And weekly events like the bug-catching contest or a Lapras that only appeared on certain days made you want to explore (and re-explore) every area in the game. Last, but certainly not least, going back to Kanto in the postgame continues to be one of the coolest surprises a game can throw at you.
2. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
Tumblr media
…But even if all of the above is true, it’s not the original. Red, Blue and Yellow, while often a broken, buggy mess, got so much right on their first try. I think a lot of it is the sense of ownership I got through playing. When you pick up a Mario or a Zelda game, you’re playing as those characters, escaping into their shoes. With Pokemon, those were my shoes, and the creatures beside me were ones I raised and trained. It was all my adventure. And that made it all the more special.
1. Pokemon Trading Card Game
Tumblr media
There’s something about card games though. All my Pokemon card friends just wanted to collect them, to keep them in binders and show them off. I always wanted to play the actual game, but would never have anyone to play against. That is, until this came out. Now I had a bevy of computer opponents to face off with, and every win would grant me the dopamine rush of ripping open virtual card packs to further enhance my decks. Even if the card game its based on is a little unbalanced, it’s still one of my favorite games ever, and my favorite Game Boy title of all-time.

Legend Of The River King GB
There's a whole lot of confusion regarding the Umi No Nushi Tsuri / Legend Of River King series, so much that I got gifted a random cartridge back in May convinced that it was a japanese exclusive but then I found out it recieved an international release... so I waited to add it to my collection until I could get my hands on a version I could actually read. You know my rules: I only get one version of the same game but I always strive to find the best one! In this case, the Legend Of The River King photographed above has been released originally in Japan as Umi No Nushi Tsuri 3, then got translated as a grey cartridge simply called Legend Of The River King, then re-released twice in a black cartridge enhanced of Game Boy Color as Legend Of The River King GB and Legend Of The River King GBC (this last one just for Australia).
Goes without saying that just like Link's Awakening DX, the Color compatible cartridge was the best version out of all these, so I went on a hunt for either the GB or the GBC labelled titles. While UNNT3 and LOTR in grey cartridge have somewhat affordable prices, the other two were much more expensive! GBC in particular was nowhere to be found with only one listing of a boxed version going for almost a thousand... I settled for a GB listing that went for under 40 euros and was thankfully legit, so everything concluded for the better in the end.
About the game itself, this is another long-running Natsume developed RPG which shares the heavy nature theming with another one of their series, Harvest Moon. The premise is as simple as it gets- with the protagonist leaving his home to find the Guardian Fish, a legentady creature and the only cure for his sister's illness; however, the graphics are immersive and impressive with lush river shores and green forests of rural (implied) Japan, even more beautiful with the coloured palette given by the Game Boy Color. If it's so expensive there must be a reason: LOTR was heavily ignored during its time but it's a real gem in the rough and a story that deserves to be played. If you want a precious addition to your collection and you have some extra earnings to spare, I'd say go for this one!

Harvest Moon GBC 3
While I’ve been staying with my friends this week, I’ve basically been limited to time off! I love it. I have basically nothing I’m required to do hahahaha. It seemed the right time to dive into some of my 3DS games each day I’ve been waiting for people to come home for Nights Journey of Dreams or Sonic Riders or when I had them play my copy of Splat 3.
Harvest Moon was finally calling me. I picked up 3 because admittedly I’m still intimidated by the 3DS era as much as I want to play A New Beginning.
Harvest Moon 3 is definitely a lot more relaxing especially with how it limits me on chore work atm. There’s not a lot of foragables on the island and I don’t have the rod yet so my days are mostly limited to instructing my partner, caring for my cow, picking berries, saying hi to villagers and shoveling the ground until I fix Pete’s work. That in itself is mostly just watering the plants right now. I’ve read he gets better as I go so I try to wait out before I interfere.
A lot of my pause in other bokumonos tends to result from choice paralysis and worrying I’ll never get everything done optimally but that’s less of a worry this time. I only really need to win over Billy and Elza, I am not marrying Pete, and there’s so little work to do that I have to work to reduce my stamina.
When I do it’s mostly to dig for change. I’d say digging is maybe even the most reliable way for money as it stands. Since I can’t buy seeds right now more than once a week and I only have one cow, money is minimal most days. However I don’t need for much either. I’ve already dug up the six first power berries so already my attention is on refriending Billy and Elza the most since travel will result in the most game access as well as open me up to Marla and Fishing storylines.
Like a lot of games I’m still in the early stage of this play through but my focus right now is on my 30 turnip job and growing grass to get more livestock. Probably some chickens and cows before grabbing sheep and horses.
