2023 Kdramas I am excited for

We have only a bit over two months in the year left, but it looks like kdramas saved the best for last. Here is the list of kdramas I am excited for...

Boyhood/Once Upon a Boyhood (November 24) - Siwan hasn't done a bad drama and I am in the mood for a nostalgic 80s piece. I am a little amused that a 35 year old is gonna be playing a high schooler, but in a fond way.

Castaway Diva (October 28) - I am very fond of Park Eun Bin and if anyone can sell the whimsy of a tale about a woman who was a castaway and then becomes a pop star, she will. Not fond of the new trend for 12 eps but it is what it is.

Goryeo-Khitan War (November 11) - my most anticipated for the rest of the year. Every casting and crew choice, every promo makes it look like an old school politics and war heavy sageuk that does not cater in the least to youth or even fusion sageuk subgenres and I am here for it so so so MUCH!

Gyeongseong Creature (December) - not a big fan of netflix originals but I am there for the cast and the setting.

The Matchmakers (October 30) - looks like a wacky period romp with Rowoon and Cho Yi Hyun. I don't have high hopes for it because I like my period stuff angsty, but whatever else, it's gonna be pretty pretty pretty!

Moon In the Day (November 1) - except for GK War, my most anticipated for the rest of the year. Reincarnation/time travel story that flashes back between modern day and Silla - GOD YES!

My Demon (November 24) - sounds like shoujo crack about a demon who loses his powers and enters into a contract marriage (of course) with a human. Done many many times before but I am always a sucker for the trope.

Perfect Marriage Revenge (October 28) - first of all, I have a huge weak spot for Sung Hoon. He's a limited actor but between New Tales of the Gisaeng and his role in Faith, he won my heart forever. But also, this plot is so old school melo the way they don't make it nowadays. Our FL is betrayed by her sister and her husband and dies. But she wakes up before her marriage and decides to do things differently and get revenge. She gets married in a contract marriage to our ML, a chaebol (of course) played by sexy Sung Hoon and...doesn't it all sound like those delicious transmigration novels made flesh?

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract (November 24) - I love time travel/time slip stories and the fact that this is a woman who ends up in the modern day where she comes across the dead ringer of her deceased husband makes it high class Durian, plus Lee Se Young is a wonderful actress who rarely picks wrong.

Tell Me That You Love Me (November) - a remake of my favorite jdrama of all time, Aishteiru to Ittekure, this story about the relationship between a deaf painter and an aspiring younger actress is going to give me the adult love story I crave. The fact that the legend that is Jung Woo Sung is back in dramas, and is playing the ML, is just the perfect thing. (His last proper drama was Padam Padam in 2011!!! He is mainly a movie star.)

Vigilante (November 8) - I am just here to see Nam Joo Hyuk kick people in the face.

Welcome to Samdalri (December 2) - Shin Hye Sun and Ji Chang Wook in a romcom mmmmm. I don't have any pics so have:

The Blood Moon - By Ruru (8.5/10)

There's a bloodthirsty cult in the north! All of the wives that get sent up end up dissappearing. Our protagonist is their ideal prey. She's the gorgeous but unwanted daughter of a merchant. She gets sold for a price, never to return. Luckily for her one of the monsters hasn't been initiated yet, and he's willing to betray his family for her.

Linnea is kinda weak. She's the weakest part of this story. Just being honest.

She starts out tough and willing to do what is needed to survive, but then she cries, and then she continues to cry. She cries alot.

Linnea must wed the northern Count Mattei. He's on the old side, but he's a perfect gentleman. She thinks she'll be ok. She's never had a real family. The merchant who took her in was just a distant relative who always planned to marry her off for cash. She's a practical lady. Her husband is an aristocrat. She thinks she's lucky.

Count Mattei introduces Aleksis as his son. There's a pregnant moment at the altar. Aleksis and Linnea both feel attraction right away. Aleksis more than her. He is conflicted about the marriage, and he's too afraid to name his feelings.

Aleksis is kind of a coward for a while, which makes him interesting.

Things get bad for Linnea....slowly.

She wants to hang on. She wants to be a Countess, but he's crazy religious. Count Mattei doesn't want a wife. He seems to want a nun. He won't sleep with her, visit her or touch her. He spends all day in a mysterious temple, conducting sermons on religion that Linnea doesn't really understand.

He even whips her, when her soul isn't deemed pure enough.

Strange stories run through the manor. The Mattei family gets special privileges, because the first head of their family helped establish the country. The legends say the first Mattei was a monster. A man shaped thing that ate blood and killed with his bare hands. He made a deal with the first king. The monster offered the king the throne, in exchange for sanity. The ability to live without constantly lusting for gore. The king agreed, and the king created rituals and objects to seal the monster. The monster retained only a fraction of his power, but he was capable of living without killing. His children are the Mattei family. Basically, all of the Mattei's can become real vampires. They have to use The Blood Seed Ritual to remain reasonably sane and human. Becoming a True Vampire is Not A Good Idea. It's torture. Being a vampire for real is too much power, and you're basically nuts forever.

Linnea is one of many wives. She is a sacrifice. Only "pure" women can be used as Blood Seed Sacrifices. It only takes one. The Mattei family is pretty big. They must sacrifice one woman for every vampire of age, or that child will become a real vampire and commit endless killings.

It's a necessary sacrifice, oh...and most of the Mattei family still enjoys torture and blood. They just don't have the insane thirst. Don't feel bad for them. They're assholes.

Linnea isn't actually a "wife" at all. Aleksis doesn't know that, so he tries to defend her when the maids treat her like trash.

Aleksis doesn't know much, but he was also in denial. He never questioned what happened to the wives until he fell in love with one.

Linnea is his Blood Seed.

He doesn't accept it.

He drinks her blood and he saves her instead.

Aleksis transforms and he kills one of his relatives. The story is not yet complete. A promo was released that reveals alot of spoilers. It is what confirms the yandere element of the story. Aleksis starts out more mousy. Struggling with the idea of stealing his fathers bride.

In the promotional spoilers he is much crueler, and he's constantly desperate for her blood. I'm going to assume she has the role of Blood Seed, but she's alive so he must drink from her or face life as a complete monster. The promo chapters also indicate their relationship is incredibly twisted.

After Aleksis transforms Linnea is his excuse. Every bad thing he does is for her. He loves her. He wants her. He wishes nobody else would look at her. He can no longer rely on his family. He's stronger than them. They're idiots willing to harm Linnea, to keep the status quo.

To be clear the cursed members of the Mattei family are powerful. They are still a threat to him, and especially Linnea, but he has a strength boost due to transforming into a true vampire.

He's a mess. He feels guilty because the Mattei line has killed many women to create Blood Seeds. He is clinging to his love for Linnea. He needs it to feel like a good person.

The promo is incredibly interesting. It implies that Aleksis killed Count Mattei, and he is covering up the murder with Linnea as an accomplice. Linnea is attending balls as the Countess, but Aleksis (her stepson) is the one escorting her. The other nobles are not stupid. They behave like a married couple. There's alot of tension. It's great. Most ballroom scenes are boring, but our protagonists really feel morally grey.

The situation is hard.

The Mattei family has produced alot of the countries strongest Knights. The vampire thing makes them dangerous, but it's likely that the government sees them as a necessary evil. Prominent figures immediately notice the discord in the Mattei family, and the fact that Aleksis has white hair. His hair was originally black.

Uh oh.

Linnea dances with a mysterious blond man who hasn't been introduced properly yet. He's someone who knows most of the vampire secrets. He wants to free Linnea fron the cursed north and all of its vampire drama.

There's also some lines that imply Count Mattei might not actually be dead. He could just be incapacitated in his own home. Aleksis and Linnea could be keeping him alive. We don't know, but Count Mattei is most definitely an enemy. He's a hyper religious maniac who enjoys the Blood Seed tradition.

Linnea cries in the middle of the ballroom, because she wants to be free. The blond man offers her freedom, and she wants it, despite her feelings for Aleksis. Linnea cries wayyyy too much, but I respect her desire to survive. It's clear that she doesn't want to live near the Mattei family.

Aleksis promised to protect her.

What if that means he has to let her go?

She is a commoner woman, after all. Not a noble with a stake in the future of the country. She suffers horribly in the Mattei house, despite Aleksis. He is never strong enough to protect her, no matter what he sacrifices.

Their relationship appears twisted beyond repair, despite their feelings.

It's great, but Linnea has to quit it with the water works. I'd rate this a 9 otherwise, but her character needs to be expanded upon. Aleksis gets lots of development and vampire powers. Linnea feels a little too boring in comparison.

On the MSATD News

I didn't have time to post a knee-jerk reaction (which those of you from the Downton days know I was apt to do - thank you to all my long term mutuals of my side blog for sticking with me through those days), as I saw the news as I was getting ready to head out for work and it's been… a bit of a day.

Suffice it to say… I am devastated. And my initial reaction was (well after cursing), that it should have ended with S4, but with a different (happier) conclusion. It's called Miss Scarlet AND THE DUKE for a reason. And after all that happened in S4… it really feels like… what was it all for?? Especially if they knew WHEN FILMING THIS?? "Goodbye for now" is NOT "goodbye forever." They really, really really fumbled this.

There's a lot of theories going around, and I will admit it's too hard for me to listen to Stuart's new interview, but going off what other's have said and the parts of the transcript I did manage to read… I just cannot feel like this was actually his decision unless there's something else going on with him (either in his personal life or maybe he has some secret role he's got, because supposedly he hasn't worked since he did ADR on S4). He's been the captain of the ship, and he has always been enthusiastic with discussing the show and had just great insight into playing William. It doesn't feel like he himself was ready to move onto other things (and that's not even how it's worded - some BS about how the show needed it him to be gone for ~longevity~ of the show), like I've seen with other actors are on shows (e.g. Dan Stevens). He still promoted S3 (which came out in the UK after they filmed S4), he still even promoted S4! He was an executive producer for S4!!! Nothing makes sense!

So if it's due to RN… why keep having the other characters say William was only going to be gone a year? Why bother to have the flashback? why bother to have him stay at at Eliza's to recover?? hell I'm surprised they just didn't keep in the coma then--

But really, why even bother to have Eliza write to him? Or have Ivy say what she said to her?? The time apart was supposed to be them looking at their options. They literally foreshadowed him joining Eliza at her agency upon his return. So… what happened?

If it was actually for personal reasons that Stuart left, he has a right to his privacy. But then they should have rewritten S4 to be the end then, since they knew all this time. I can't believe we are getting the full story on this, one way or the other. The more and more I think about it... I do think it was RN's doing though.

Just two nights ago I drafted up a whole meta extolling how one of the best things this show has done has been how they developed William and how he grew as a character. The progression he made as he not only accepted Eliza having a career but encouraging her. His mentorship of Fitzroy. How he came from nothing, from a teenager living on the streets, to become an inspector at Scotland Yard. But they have chosen to toss that all out the window.

Who knows, maybe S5 ends with Eliza deciding to go to New York. But it doesn't seem like they are handling this like Babington's absence in Sanditon. They will make Eliza quickly fall for someone else, and slap fans in the face who have been following their friends to lovers slow burn for five years (because we had to wait for S2 in the first place thanks to the pandemic). And what sucks is that we still got promo saying they are in love with each other. From Stuart, from Kate, from Rachael New herself. We have still gotten promo promoting the romance. Why not have them have a big fight then or something, idk. They gave us hope. And you know what Fellowes says about false hope.

So I'm just supposed to believe that William gives up on Eliza and doesn't return…? No, I cannot. As much as we hated the deaths on DA when they wrote out actors, at least those characters still died in love with their spouses. And while I'd still be foaming at the mouth in anger if they killed him off… yeah.

William's last lines of the show is a flashback including him saying "is it all worth it?" And the answer is… no it's not.

i watched the 911 promo clip and here are my thoughts

captain hats - obviously one them becoming the interim captain

i know a lot of you on tumblr don't like the idea of it being buck but i think it could be him

hen will be settling in with the new child and that requires a lot from a person

chim is busy planning the wedding with maddie and literally every time a wedding has happened the person planning was not captain

it could be eddie but we've never really seen him want to be anything more than the role he has at the fire station currently

we saw how buck took charge in the bridge collapse and it's made him think his ready to actually be a captain but the cruise will make him realise he still hasn't properly dealt with his trauma and maybe he isn't actually ready for (or doesn't actually want) the captain's title

wedding ring - madney wedding

like i said chim is busy helping plan the wedding so maybe he won't actually be on call for the cruise

everyone he knows, all of his family, is working on it except him

it'll be a fun callback to season 2 after he got stabbed and called tommy(?, an old member of the 118 who transferred) in for extra help

buddie having keys to each others houses is such a big thing to the fandom and if abc want to be great they definitely would've picked up on it

linking to the captains hat buck or eddie (or both) have panic attacks because of how much fucking trauma they have because of the water (the plane in s1, the tsunami, the well, the lightning strike - you could probably find something im every season) and they end up staying at eddie's together for awhile so they don't have to be alone

of course they both have their girlfriends (marisol and natalia) but they just don't understand this situation and the trauma they shared together and how bad it affected them

(alternatively the loft burns down and buck moves in with eddie, they share one set of keys)

also the anchor keychain?? buck and eddie are there for each other no matter what, they ground each other and have each others back

the watch - the time is right

i think the time on the watch is at 7:30 (obviously i could be wrong) and y'know what else had 7 and 3?? 3 minutes and 17 seconds

the number has been such a big part of tragic/traumatic storylines throughout the show i wouldn't be surprised if it was here now

timing is such a great them and goes perfectly with the already set up storylines for this season

madney wedding - there's no time like the present, lets gather everyone we love and have a wedding in a meaningful place (bathena backyard) and be happy together forever as soon as possible

baby wilson - they're finally ready to grow healthily, they've had a lot of things test their marriage (hen cheating, ivf, hen's kidnapping, karen losing her job, hen going to med school, karen almost dying in an explosion at her work) and now they can finally say they're at a place where they want to expand their family properly and permanently

buddie's girlfriends - the issue with their girlfriends had always been timing and when they meet, did marisol and natalia come at the right time? will they stay and be permanent for the boys? will they break up? will the break up still leave them as friends (i hope so)

bathena cruise - i don't need to say much. they thought they finally had time to relax and be themselves and be with each other. it seems the only way they're going to get that is retirement

some other fun stuff/thoughta:

you can see a helicopter light, could be lucy or tommy flying - we know they both can

the time duration on the call being 1:18 is great 10/10

the keys could also be about may? her being on college/uni, no longer being at dispatch, she wouldn't know what's going on other than through the updates on the news and anything she can get out of whoever is at the call/maddie (but then anyone at the cruise is highly unlikely to answer their calls/messages)

Ok, that was A LOT. I have so many feelings but no coherence so i'm gonna do this bullet point form but def not in order, just in order of me remembering wtf happened lol

-IZZY AND WEE JOHN IN DRAG!!!!! Wee John looked STUNNING with that Divine-esque appearance and Izzy had that transmasc drag king kind of thing going on (iykyk) that made me love him even more

-Izzy singing LA VI EN ROSE took me tf out!!! i'm glad he got to finish it after the *ahem* distractions bc Con's voice is so beautiful I could listen to it forever. We better get it in the album!!! Also someone posted the lyrics translated and i cannot get over the lyrics:

After killing someone which we know is a big trigger for him historically.

But Ed also had a valid reaction. He's wanted to retire for a while and stede knows this but it hasn't seemed to have sunk in quite yet. He fears that Stede only sees Blackbeard and...its fair of him to have that impression tbh. These are two messy, traumatized dudes who have never had a real relationship and there's gonna be bumps. I hope we get s3 so we can better explore that like Djenks wants.

"Obviously," Lan Xichen folded his hands on top of the table, "the final decision will lie with-" "Oh, trust me," Jiang Cheng interrupted, "he's gonna do as he's told." Well, maybe not quite as long, but it had been a while since they'd gone to school together, and afterwards they had lost touch entirely. Rage Against The Dying Of The Light - My Jily survives AU that I've been thinking about for years. It has been rewarding to get it out and explore the tentative peace period after the first wizarding war. It's also my first fic to reach over 100 kudos and while I try not to pay attention to my AO3 stats it is nice to know so many people are enjoying the story.

The clothes and the way the girls look on death island makes me sooo :/ like I’m really excited abt the movie, but it’s post vendetta. It’s been 20 years, does Jill just? Not buy new clothes for 20 years? Claire’s jacket can at least be explained by the fact that it’s a leather jacket I’m just skdkkfkfkf. Capcom let them age.

but he's truly reached a point where he does what he does for the people who love him and no one else and i'm so proud of him for that. i know in this industry radio play and awards and public promo matters, but to see him talk about us has made me realise that to him success means that his music was loved by his fans and everything else is just a bonus.

I know this is cute and whatever but the thing is- the fans won’t be there forever, many will move on and in the industry the gp matters as well, unfortunately :( he still hasn’t sold out his tour and many arenas are at risk of being empty . oh yeah i do agree that he shouldn't completely rely on fans because yes definitely people move on or part ways with a fandom and i do think that his team are doing quite a lot to push him towards getting the gp's attention and by the time tour comes around next year, he'll be well famous. like they're really trying to be more active on social, get him good press and put him on popular shows and magazines for promo. and i think the reason he hasn't sold out yet is because his shows are literally a whole year away still, like the UK dates went on sale in oct when the concerts are in nov 2023 and that's quite ahead. i definitely think closer to the dates, or even when the tour officially kicks off, he'll definitely inch towards selling out and having to add more dates and stuff like that.

but i suppose what i was trying to say with my post is that, i get why he sort of gives emphasis on fans and how much they've done for him over the years because for him, when everyone else was sabotaging him, fans were the only people boosting him up, with things like the no control project, project home, defenceless project last year and stuff like that. and i get why he brings it up all of the time because as i said i feel like he really is overwhelmed with gratitude for us and doesn't know how else to show it to us.

As a taekooker it might not be a big deal people can always stick to perspectives they prefer to satisfy themselves. This actually increases the gap between their solos. I been in many fandoms so I understand truce between solos of couples are quite difficult but why make it big if you are really in a relationship.

All I am saying I don't think Jungkook is obligated to dance on fandom whims. He can very well promote/support whoever he wishes. I am just looking it from the perspective of potential fans and relationship support. People are aware of their outings, they know we are aware so not talking about a partners work openly isn't hiding anything really. I don't think Jungkook will promote/support Taehyung's album to this level. Reason is I have observed a pattern with Jungkook and how he deals his relationship with Tae. When he starts interacting with him more onscreen he deliberately interacts with HWSNBN. Maybe it's his way of balancing things. Its a mere observation and not a matter of right and wrong.

Somebody mentioned they need to hide their relationship so he doesn't talk about Tae exclusively. Well enough but why go extra with HWSNBN. He could have done this with any member. Just because if they have to hide their relationship forever he can't use same person as a distraction. Again I am not claiming motive of live was to exclusively support HIM. It could be a coincidence or pre-planned as you hinted. I am just putting out a point while it's not ok to be insecure any fan heavily biased again Tae may feel cheated, solo or shipper. Again artist is not obligated to entertain shippers but smart manoeuvring can be excercised.

Another anon pointed out Asians are critical to their loved ones in private and may not choose to talk about them in public. Its a very stereotypical statement in a cultural context. I am also an Asian, I can assure you this is not a cultural phenomenon but more of an indivualistic approach. Some Asians tends to be critical of their loved ones in private but some at the same time love to brag about them. I think Jungkook is both. While he like to keep things private he never shies from bragging about Taehyung's handsomeness. So bragging about their work is also not extreme. Also, I would like to add we have seen various BTS moments of Jungkook being critical of Tae's performance and artistry when he knows cameras are rolling and members are present.

The way I look this situation is I feel both of them needs public support about their relationship specifically in the future even if they want to come out of not. While hiding things are okay but would create dissonance between their solo fandoms, particularly when other mentions yoo time and time again. I am a pro Jungkook fan but I admire Tae's quality of mentioning/hiding about Jungkook. It feels like everything is in open yet hidden. Jungkook, I feel, takes extreme measures to either hide or he becomes plane obvious in his admiration. I think he is learning to balance and improved from his past self.

At the end what they have decided between themselves, if they are cool with everything is sorted. From a market's perspective I think they need to come out on a plane where their fans can be mollified and don't hate other artist. It will be beneficial for their hidden relation support.

I'm not sure this is actually the case. In the last 3 years I've never really seen JK interact with any member online the way he has recently. JK just wasn't very active and rarely posted or commented on anything. Yet since being exclusive on Weverse, he's interacted with RM, Hobi, HWSNBN and Tae.

Also, bear in mind that since going exclusive on Weverse only one member has released music so far. We'll find out if it's an isolated incident when Suga releases D-Day. Will JK go all out for him to? Only time will tell.

A thing about Iris that made me so mad is the 'So, you wanna get married?" that she said in the new promo for 4x02. Like, what??? She sounds kinda like a 'villain ' there, mocking. They don't just want to get married. It's not just a random thought. Tarlos has been through a LOT and they deserve to be together forever so much. And I hate that they need "permission" from a random (at least to TK) woman, like they don't have every right to do so. Urghhh

Yes! I've only just seen the promo and that part instantly got my hackles up. Also TK's response being 'that's the plan.' Nooo TK you sweet potato - tell her you *are* getting married to the love of your life who she wed (at head canon aged 18) for her own scared-teen reasons at the time, while knowing full well he was gay and trying to do anything to perform a straight life for his family. She needs to let Carlos go - because she already did, years back. It would be wildly unfair for her to gatekeep Carlos from TK like it's some kind of game, especially as she hasn't actually been his bestie for a long time. Legally she does have rights to certain things - but she doesn't have the right to mess with TK or tell Carlos 'nah come back to me for a divorce once you have a different partner that I like.'

I mean, hopefully she will actually like TK and it won't be that bad, but I don't love the idea of this being 'played for laughs'.

Like they talk about DOR assaulting Nolan, and there are threads about wanting Bale and Nolan to work together again and the most I've read is that they probably won't because the batman questions are getting old and they want to move past that. I found another article that says and I quote: "Interestingly enough, Bale hasn't appeared in a Nolan movie in over a decade" 🤔. The Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012 and he did American Hustle, directed by O'Russell (who made Amy Adams cry on set 👀), in 2013 and no longer worked with Nolan after, spent years developing Amsterdam with O'Russell, did way more than just act on it, probably has a good relationship with the man.

that is the not reason they haven't worked together again. they made 'the prestige' after batman begins. they clearly liked working together post begins. if bale or nolan didnt like getting asked batman questions they'd notify their pr ppl and have it batman x'd out during promo interviews. What do you think about Louis saying he hasn't lived fatherhood yet? Like yes Freddie isn't even 2 but the phrasing seemed like he was suggesting a separation from the experience of fatherhood? He said Freddie doesn't inspire him to write nor does fatherhood. These are things I have trouble not treating as shady or odd ways of describing something, particularly compared to Liam using Bear's heartbeat in a song & talking in detail about fatherhood changing him.

But anyway, things Louis has actually said about his child:

Oh it’s so fun at the moment. I actually had to be away for promo for like the last three weeks so I hadn’t seen Freddie so I saw him for the first time yesterday. And it was so fun. I mean there’s just so much personality. It kinda goes from not doing loads - yeah being super cute - but not necessarily doing loads and now it’s just so rewarding. I mean like he’s starting to talk, running around, showing off, all that stuff. It’s really fun.
