“I think I’m gonna break up with Joey.” You look up from your notebook where you’ve been writing your valedictorian speech. Melissa had been right; you’d secured that spot in your class. You take a moment to gaze at your best friend sitting across from you at your kitchen table.
It’s a Friday evening, with only a week of your senior year left. Graduation less than two weeks away. You stare at Melissa, trying to figure out where this is coming from. She hasn’t looked you in the eye since you’ve looked up. She’s biting her lower lip and looking for all the world like she’s looking at one of the last pieces of homework you’ll have to do. At least for high school.
You think maybe it’s nerves. Mel certainly looks nervous. Maybe with college coming up she isn’t sure she and Joey will make it through the life changes of it. Except you know how she feels about Joey. She gets annoyed with him and loves to act like an over exasperated partner that’s been married to him for years. You know she almost never is though, not really. When she is, she tells you. This is the first time she’s mentioned anything about breaking up with him.
“Why?” You finally ask, keeping your eyes on your redhead as she finally meets your eye.
She shrugs, leaning against the table. “He’s still hanging out with Mikey and everything… I don’t think it’s right.”
You sigh, setting down your pen. “Mel,” You start as you reach across the table to grip her hands. “Do you love Joey?”
“Yeah but if he’s going to keep hangin’ out with that asshole—”
You squeeze her hands to get her to stop. “Look at me.” You say softly as she had looked away as she started on the tangent you interrupted. You wait until her green eyes are looking at you once more. “Forget all the shit with Mikey.” You say. “I’m not askin’ about that. I’m askin’ how you feel about Joey. You love him, right?”
“Right.” Melissa answers after a moment keeping herself from going on the tangent again at your request. You know she does. You’ve seen it go from her crush on him early junior year to actual affection once they started dating. To now, it's obvious to anyone with eyes around them how much Mel loves him. She’s sarcastic and pretends to be annoyed but she can’t hide the way she looks at him or doesn’t hesitate to do anything he needs.
“And you wanna be with him? Probably marry him, whenever he gets the nerve to propose, right?” You ask, despite a small ache in your ribs. You blame it on leaning over the table and the wood pressing into them. It isn’t a secret. It hasn’t been since Melissa and Joey’s relationship got serious after they’d been together a year. You imagine it won’t be right away that Joey will propose. Maybe a couple years into college but you know it’s coming. Just like you know Mel’s answer.
Another long drawn out moment before Mel is nodding across from you. “Yeah. I do.”
“Then you don’t wanna break up with him and you’re just gonna make yourself miserable.” You say, squeezing her hands one more time before you draw them away with a shrug. “The Mikey stuff?” You sigh as you reclaim your pen. “It sucks, yeah. But whatever. Joey was never really my friend, y’know? We got to know each other because you spend time with both of us. It’s not worth breaking up with Joey over the fact that he still wants to hang out with Mikey.”
You both have plans for the next few years. You’ve talked about them plenty in the build up to this year, senior year, and over the course of it. You know Mel is going to go into education, being a teacher is what she’s wanted to do since eighth grade. It hasn’t changed since. She’s planning on her own house in Philly as soon as she can. She’s told you about the little garden she can’t wait to have out back. Fresh produce grown right in her backyard. She’s planning on marrying Joey. She hasn’t said anything about kids but that wouldn’t surprise you. Her family is traditionally big and you know as much as Mel complains about them; they’re the most important to her.
That’s Melissa’s five year plan. College to get her teaching degree, teacher’s assistant until she can get her own position. Save for the house and the garden. Marry Joey. Start their life together, whatever it looks like. You know she doesn’t really care if Joey wants kids or doesn’t. What’s important to her is life with Joey.
Your five year plan? You don’t have one past your career in social work. That much of a plan has always been more than enough for you. College for your bachelor’s. Start working at the entry level for experience while you go for your master’s. You still haven’t decided if afterwards you’ll go for your doctorate or a phd since they do have different applications for them and the jobs available. You figure though that part of it can wait until you get there.
The relationship part of it? Well, you’ve just never worried about it too much. You always figured it would find you when it was meant to. If it was meant to. And if it didn’t? Well, you kind of figured you’d be alright either way.
“Maybe you’re right.” Melissa says with a huff across from you. The usual sound that accompanies her admitting she isn’t right. “Maybe I don’t wanna break up with Joey but I’m pissed he’s still hanging around with Mikey after what happened.”
You shrug, glancing back up to her. “Like I said, Mel, it’s okay. Joey and I weren’t really friends anyhow.”
“Maybe not but you’re my best friend and his best friend hurt you. If he cares so much about me shouldn’t that extend to you? Hell, even forget all that, it's just basic human decency!”
“Don’t get me wrong, I agree. You know I do, Mel. But…it doesn’t change how you feel about him and you can’t make Joey do somethin’ he doesn’t wanna do. It isn’t…it’s not worth ending everything with him over when you still care about him so much. It ain’t worth making yourself miserable over.”
Suddenly Melissa is out of her chair and rounding the table. Before you can even ask she’s throwing herself into your space with enough force it jostles you as her arms wrap around you tightly. “Just know that nobody messes with my girl and gets away with it. Nobody. I won’t let nobody get away with hurtin’ ya, not while I’m breathin’, kid.”
You blink the tears away from your eyes that are welling. You and Melissa haven’t really talked about what happened since prom. You don’t really want to. It happened and you want to move on from it. With her arms gripping you tightly and her words though, you can’t help the swelling of emotions for your best friend. You shift to wrap your arms around her to match her embrace. “Thank you,” is all you can manage to breathe out.
Melissa doesn’t drop her grip around you for a long, drawn out moment. Her arms squeeze around you to reaffirm her presence. It’s only when she hears the front door open and Kristen Marie’s loud entrance that she slowly pulls away. She kisses the top of your head, a hand squeezing your shoulder before she retreats to the other side of the table.
“‘Sup losers.” Kristen Marie says as she strides into the kitchen just as Melissa sits back down. “Mel, where’s Ma?”
“Do I look like I know?” Melissa says, shooting a glare to her sister.
“Geez, I was just askin’.” Kristen Marie mutters. She glances at you, smiling. “Hey, Y/N, congrats on being valedictorian.”
Melissa’s glare at her sister only hardens at her brightening once she notices you. This is how it’s played out with the Schemmenti sisters since second grade. They gripe at each other and annoy each other. Kristen Marie purposefully cheery at you whenever she sees you strictly because it gets her sister to glare at her like she currently is.
“Thanks.” You answer with a small shake of your head at the Schemmenti Staredown happening across from you.
“Okay,” Melissa says a little loudly. “You can go now, Kristen Marie.”
“Hello? I’m having a conversation with Y/N, not you, Melissa Ann. Please have some manners. Ma taught us better, you know.”
“Oh my god,” Melissa grumbles, getting up again to start shoving her sister out of the kitchen. “Go away, we’re busy. No time for conversations with little sisters, get out.”
In the usual perfect timing of any Schemmenti, their mother arrives just then. Stepping through the side door of the house into the kitchen. She raises an eyebrow, seeing her two daughters that are now in the doorway between kitchen and living room. By now, they’ve slipped into their usual insult trading tirade. It’s rapid fire and littered with Italian you only know from practically living in this house as your second home.
“Hey! Basta, you two!” Somehow, Mrs. Schemmenti manages to be louder than her two daughters. As soon as her voice is filling the kitchen, the two sisters freeze entirely. "Madonn’ you’d think I was raising boombotz ‘round here.”
You amusedly watch the two sisters pull away from each other. Each murmuring something along the lines of ‘sorry, Ma.’ Melissa drops back into her seat across from you as Kristen Marie makes for the stairs to retreat to her room. When she looks at you, she frowns. She glances to ensure her mother won’t see before flipping you off in return for you clearly being amused at her getting in trouble. It only makes you laugh, and for as much as Melissa tries to hold her glare at you; she starts smiling.
The next time you see Melissa is at school, with Joey. They have their arms linked as they pass you at your locker between periods. She yanks on his arm to get him to stop so you can talk about the new underclassmen gossip she’s heard. She makes you promise to sit with them at lunch. You do. Joey doesn’t seem uncomfortable but he does seem…awkward. You pay him little mind, focused instead on enjoying a meal with your best friend between classes. Before Joey leaves for his next period Melissa grasps his wrist, firmly reminding him that it’ll be three of you ditching your last day next week and for your senior week trip after graduation.
“You don’t need to do that.” You say once you look away from the back of Joey’s football jersey as he leaves the cafeteria.
“Yes, I do.”
You sigh. At least Melissa isn’t playing the game of pretending not to know what you’re talking about. “I told you, it’s okay if you just wanna go with Joey for ditch day and senior week. It’s practically spring break with way more freedom; it’s fine, Mel.”
“I don’t want to go just me and Joey for senior week.” She says with a glare. Her tone has you sitting up a bit more, blinking at the redhead sitting across the table from you.
“He wants it to be just the two of us.” Melissa continues after a moment, her fingers picking at what’s left of her sandwich. Unusual enough that she wouldn’t finish lunch it’s more unusual for her to be nervously picking at the remnants. After a moment her green eyes glance back up at you. Melissa clears her throat, shifting in her seat. “He wants to have our first time at the hotel in Myrtle Beach.”
You blink again, doing your best to fight the rising heat you feel in your cheeks. You can’t tell if it’s embarrassment at the topic or the awkwardness. Or the way Melissa’s clear feeling of discomfort reminds you of Mikey and prom. “You don’t want to.” You practically whisper. It isn’t a question. You can tell.
Melissa nods. “I mean, eventually, of course I do. I just…” She sighs, suddenly seeming frustrated with herself as she brushes her hair away from her face. “I just don’t think I’m ready for that yet.” She finally admits quietly, looking back down at the food she’s picking at. “I mean, imagine if my Ma found out I slept with Joey outta wedlock? She’d have a heart-attack and then if I got pregnant… I love him, Y/N, I do, and I want to be with him like that I just…it doesn’t feel right.”
“You don’t have to do anything you don’t feel comfortable with, Mel. That you don’t feel right with.”
“If you don’t come with us to South Carolina, I will.” She answers.
You bristle. You reach across the table and grip Melissa’s hands firmly between your own. You meet her gaze with your own readily when she looks back up. “If Joey ever, ever, puts his hands on you when you tell him you don’t want him to; you call me.” You say with every ounce of sincerity.
Melissa blinks at you, her eyes wide in surprise that you would imply defending her. Despite her doing exactly the same with Mikey at prom. “He wouldn’t.” She finally manages to say.
You agree, but you also see the tinge of fear in your best friend's expression. She trusts Joey, but there’s always that little bit of doubt. You both trusted Mikey too. Maybe not as much as Joey but still. You had. Yet he took advantage anyway. “If he ever does, Melissa. You call me.” You repeat as you squeeze her hands lightly.
She nods. “You know you’d be the first one to know.” She finally agrees.
“I’ll come with you on the trip if you would really feel more comfortable.” You say as you finally release her hands.
“You will? Even if Joey will be a little snot about it?”
You scoff. “I can handle Joey being an asshole.” You assure swiftly. “If you want me there, I’m there. Joey will deal with it.”
Melissa smiles, launching into filling you in on all the itinerary she’s been planning out for the trip. By the time you’re both leaving the cafeteria you’re reluctantly agreeing to her plans to take surfing lessons that Joey had vetoed before.
Before Myrtle Beach and the senior week trip; you have to get through graduation. Which for the most part is easy. The last week of school doesn’t present anything really challenging wise from your classes. Your teachers know there’s little point in testing or quizzing your senior class by now. Though some do still attempt to get you to learn at least slightly in your last week. Others are perfectly content to wheel the television cart into the classroom and put a VHS on for your class to talk over.
When the actual ceremony comes; you’re more nervous. You have both your mother and Melissa check your stole over your graduation gown as well as the fit of your cap multiple times. As if it wasn’t a process to ensure the correct sizes weeks ago anyhow. Still, you’ll be standing in front of your whole school for your valedictorian speech. Popularity and looks may not have been something you were ever particularly concerned with through the last four years but you’d like to avoid looking like an idiot on that scale still.
When it comes time for your speech; you feel the nerves fall away and settle into your ability to focus on what you feel is important to say. You’d worked hard on your speech; your last farewell to both your school and classmates. It also serves to say the same on behalf of your graduating class. You wanted it to resonate. Falling comfortably into the words you’d written; you aren’t certain if it does or not. You feel like you blink and you’re at the end of the speech.
Once you finish, Melissa is the only one of your graduating class that doesn’t toss her cap in the air. She’s too busy cupping her hands around her mouth and shouting her support for you. She’s still wearing the cap a few minutes later when she all but barrels into you to hug you tight. You return her grip, your smile hurting your face when she tells you how wonderful you’d done up there.
Instead of staying out like plenty of your other new graduate friends do; you go out to dinner with Melissa, both your families, and Joey, too. You stay the night at Melissa’s like a thousand other nights before, your packed suitcase repacked by the redhead who had said no to about half of what you packed. You at least convinced her to leave the sunscreen in your suitcase before the two of you went to bed.
The next morning, you’re throwing both yours and Melissa’s bags in the back of Joey’s truck where his own are already at. You hug Melissa’s mom, telling her to pass half of it along to your own and remind her you’re only gone for a week. She hugs you back just as tightly and whispers a thank you for taking care of Mel. You don’t answer the sentiment other than a small nod. A silent ‘of course, why wouldn’t I?’
You’re hardly surprised halfway through the near nine hour drive that Mel is asleep, leaning against you from her spot in the middle of the cab of the truck. You’d told her it would happen when she was nudging you awake in the middle of the night because she was too excited about getting to the beach and having a week of no responsibilities with the newfound, if temporary, freedom of graduation.
What you’re slightly surprised by is Joey, suddenly piping up from his spot in the driver’s seat. He had been content to worry about driving while you and Melissa controlled the radio, singing along a bit obnoxiously to the songs you really liked and talking over the ones that weren’t favorites. Now that Melissa is asleep, his voice fills the cab. Not loud, or trying to wake up his girlfriend but loud enough to get your attention.
“You didn’t have nothin’ better to do for senior week?”
Joey doesn’t ask it meanly, or snidely. He sounds as casual as if he was asking if you heard what the weather will be in Myrtle Beach while you’re there. Except you know his meaning. You know it’s his way of saying you should have stayed home, or that he would have preferred you had.
“Mel practically insisted I come.” You answer in a matching tone. You don’t say it any differently than if you were saying it was supposed to be sunny nearly every day you were there, and not too hot. You hope he catches the meaning you hide beneath the casual tone.
“She can handle being said no to, y’know.” Joey answers.
“Can you?” You throw out, looking over a head of red hair to glare at Joey.
He glances away from the highway to look at you for a brief moment before he turns back to watching where he’s driving. “I’m not an asshole.” He finally answers.
You don’t answer, though you drop your glare from the side of his head. Focusing instead on the view from your passenger window.
“I love her, Y/N.” Joey says after a long bout of silence filling the truck cab.
You bite your tongue, sensing he has more he feels he needs to say.
“I know I ain’t as smart as you.” Joey continues after a moment, as you thought he might. “I didn’t get straight A’s, hell, I graduated by the skin of my teeth and we both know I cheated on a test or midterm or finals more than once.” He admits.
“What’s your point, Joey?” You sigh, looking back to him.
“I see how you look at her, y’know?”
Your brow furrows. You had thought he was trying to plead his case about not taking advantage of Melissa. “What are you talkin’ about?”
“I ain’t a genius, but I ain’t stupid, Y/N.” He answers, glancing back to you for a few seconds again. “I wouldn’t do anythin’ Mel didn’t wanna do. Even if I’m…ready for more in our relationship. I love her. I don’t wanna mess nothin’ up.”
“Okay…?” You drag out, more confused the more Joey talks.
He meets your eyes briefly before he looks back to the road again. “I won’t give you a chance.” He finally says. Not in a mean way but just…factual. “I won’t mess up what me and Mel got. Even if it ain’t like what you have with her. It’s good, really good, and I love her.”
You sober, the furrow of your brow eases as you lean back in your seat. You suddenly understand. Joey knows what you realized at prom. Maybe he knew it before you realized it yourself. Your love for Melissa is more than friends, and maybe has always been. You sigh.
“Joey.” You start. “I’m not your competition.” You shrug. “I’m not sabotaging your relationship with Mel by being here. I’ve never tried to, and I won’t now. As long as you keep her happy, and take care of her? I’m not your competition. All I want is for Melissa to be happy and treated right. And she is. You think I don’t get my ear talked off about you all the time?”
Joey laughs. “You think she don’t do the same to me ‘bout you? Christ, I think I knew your valedictorian speech myself before you even gave it.”
In spite of yourself, you smile. Sure, there’s the smallest of stabs in your heart if you think about it for too long. What you feel and what it means. What you really want, what you’re missing out on. Except, the larger part of you feels warm. Warm with Melissa leaning against your shoulder sleeping soundly. Warm with the knowledge that even if it isn’t in the same way she does care about you deeply. Warm with the knowledge that you and Joey are just two people that love the same person. How upset can you really be when he wants exactly what you want for Melissa? Whatever she wants and needs to be happy. You can’t blame Joey for being protective of his relationship with her. You would be too if you were him. You are in your way about your friendship with her.
“You should talk to her about it yourself,” You say after a moment, “but she told me she isn’t ready for what you were wanting this trip to be.”
Joey is quiet for a long time before he nods. “Yeah. I kinda figured that one out.” He shrugs. “Just wish she woulda said that. ‘Stead of beating around the bush about it all, y’know?”
“Like I said…you should talk to Mel about it yourself. I’ll get lost on the beach for a while if you need me to.” You offer.
Joey grins and shakes his head. “Nah. Let’s just have a good week, huh? When we get back we’re gonna have to worry about being adults and all that other shit.”
“One last stupid teenage hurrah, huh?”
“Damn right.”

The most ridiculous arguments I've ever seen from E/riels is not about "the smell of bread and roses", no, but about the sunshine she needs in her life, black dress and about that godforsaken city. It takes a megamind to use such arguments.
"Velaris has sunshine", "There's sun in the NC too", "The NC is a sun court we remind you", "Some flowers can bloom in the dark"
Even if the NC has a sun, it it still a night fucking court. n-i-g-h-t. This word means something, isn't it? Spring also has nights and it wasn't a right place for Feyre anyway. And you'd think Elain and Elucien's words about sunshine are just about only the damn flowers and the sun in the sky that rises in the morning and goes down in the evening. Please!
"They dressed her badly so that Eris would ignore her, lol", "They dressed her like that on purpose because they didn't want Elaine's beauty to overshadow Nesta's"
What the fuck?
Eris is completely indifferent to Elain as a woman. It isn't difficult to understand. And he is Lucien's brother, just fun to remember, who saved his life, looked at him with sadness in ACOWAR and visited him in ACOSF. Eris was interested only in Nesta. He is also a fashionable male and he looked at Elain with ✨assessing gaze✨. I suppose he's also noticed how much the black colour doesn't suit her (She used the perfect complement to her black dress - pearls - but even that couldn't save her from the colour that sucked the life out of her), not to mention the fact that he probably knows that she's his brother's mate. So delulu and simple demonstrating a zero reading skills if they understand the text like that. Basta!
It is also equally unfair to both sisters to say that. Nesta is a queen without her sisters, she is amazing woman by her own without any "help". She doesn't need any favours.
Elain is amazing woman, no need to dress her badly on purpose to make someone shine.
Sisters are amazing by their own. They all have their own powers and characters. I feel so sorry for those who don't understand it and use such stupid arguments to explain their ship.
"She is ok in Velaris, Velaris is her home, no need to worry about the Hewn City", "Her home in Velaris and in the NC. She doesn't want to leave the place where her family and nephew lives!!! She has a work - tending to Feyre's gardens and helping people in Velaris with theirs. She is happy!", "The Hewn City is not Elaine's place, that's why she was ridiculous there, Cassian meant that", "She can live in Velaris, she was healthy there!", "You want to take her away from the family that she loves and that loves her. You are a misogynist and Elain hater!", "Cassian is an unreliable narrator, he understand nothing in fashion. We can't believe him!"
PLEASE!
Night Court is her home, but not the Hewn City and Illyrians lands. Night Court is her home, but only in the borders of that retched city. How can they claim that the Night Court is her home, and at the same time erase most of the Court, including its official capital and royal residence?
Velaris is a huge hole that has been closed for thousands of years, and The Night Court is not Velaris, ThE CoUrT oF DrEaMs, how SJM called them, who loves to segregate their own citizens and think about 90% of the Court as scum and lowlifes, and do nothing to make their lives better.
If the Night Court is her home, don't sort its parts.
Cassian is an unreliable narrator, but Feyre with her fantasies and "What if the Cauldron was wrong?" is a very-very reliable narrator, yes-yes. Selective reading will strike you one day and it will be very hurt.
And here we are, with Elain and flowers, when she said the opposite to Nesta in ACOSF. Being Feyre's gardener and personal family baker aren't about her personal growth. Like being Azriel's personal houseplant.
The black dress was a metaphor. It is so cute how they can see things that are not there, but miss the log in their own eyes. (the rose necklace and the whole Azriel's bonus chapter, I can't).
I really don't know how they came up with that.

And now, for something completely different... a few Inkheart headcanons, specifically about Smol Feral Trash Cat-Dog With A Knife. Così, de botto, senza senso, as we say here. Some I've picked up through the years by reading other people's headcanons or fic and then developed (if you can call any of this stuff "developed", lol) by building up on ideas I liked, others date back all the way to when I read the books in middle school.
I think it's safe to say that most of the fandom knows "basta!" means "enough!" or "stop!" in Italian. Which... yeah, pretty great name for the kind of violent criminal whose victims would be screaming that kind of thing, at least in a book series for kids. But, like other people who've spent probably too much time thinking about it at some point or another, I do like to imagine a more Watsonian explanation for it being a real, if surprisingly well-fitting, name rather than a nickname he earned during his time as a fire raiser. Mine actually hinges on the fact that, back in the day, before reliable contraceptives or safe abortifacients or even just the idea that there was nothing weird or bad about being married while not having children or sex or not being married at all, couples who ended up with more kids than they could feed would sometimes name the hopefully last one of them Ultimo or Ultima, meaning "last", as a sort of... auspicious name, if for a given definition of "auspicious." I've even heard a story (which, admittedly, might be a urban legend, as I've seen it mentioned in a few places but with no source) about a couple who called their last children Ultimo, Definitivo ("definitive, conclusive, final"), and Finiamola ("let's get it over with!", or "let's stop this!"), each time hoping the new kid would also be the very last... so, yeah. Long story short, I imagine Basta as the youngest child of poor parents living in a small, crowded house, who by the time of his birth were just about ready to say, "Enough with this! If we get another after this one, we'll just carry it into the woods and leave it there, and then it'll be up to whatever animal/fairy/kindly passerby to kill it or raise it!" I also like to think he actually has an older sister named Ultima, running around somewhere in the Inkworld... even if, for both obvious reasons and more headcanon-y ones, he hasn't kept in contact with anyone from his family ever since he officially joined Capricorn.
About the "more headcanon-y" reasons: I once read a fic (I thiiink it was on Fanfiction.net? Probably not AO3) where, as a boy, Basta killed his own father, an abusive drunkard, to prove his loyalty and ruthlessness to Capricorn. Needless to say, I loved it! And went on to incorporate part of it in my vision of Basta as a character. In my own headcanons, I'm not sure if I really see Basta's father or even both of his parents as that actively hateful or violent towards him (if only because I'm not quite sure if singling out just one boy among so many children in that way would quite work, realistically speaking about an in-universe Medieval-ish fantasy world... unless some of those many children died young due to hunger, illness, or simple lack of supervision. Again, in-universe Medieval-ish fantasy world) but as I love that bit in Inkheart where Fenoglio talks about Basta's unhappy childhood, how worthless he thought he was, and how easily he clung to Capricorn, I do picture him being severely neglected and receiving very little in the way of kindness or affection both inside and outside of his family. Perhaps being either dismissed or unfairly blamed for being the runt of the litter and not big and strong enough to help more around the house, or in the fields, or in whatever failing business his father might have owned, given how he's not exactly tall and physically imposing even as an adult? Anyway, I do find the idea of him being miserable in his early life and initially clinging to Capricorn as both a magnetic, irresistible symbol of what neither him nor anyone in his family ever had and his one real hope for money, power, and generally something better, then coming to see him as this godlike figure, as well as a new, better father he'd be willing to exchange his perhaps equally distant but much less impressive (and much less interested in finding some actual use for him) old one for (even at the cost of a very cold take on "out with the old, in with the new"), incredibly fascinating.
For something less dark, more crack unless you consider the implications: building up on the fact that yes I realize we're never given anyone's exact height in the books, no I won't get over the idea of him being essentially a pint-sized menace and Capricorn's very angry, very menacing chihuahua, it amuses me (way more than it should) to think that at some point, probably when he was still one of the youngest among Capricorn's men in the Inkworld or when he and Capricorn were on their own in our world, someone definitely tried dismissing him as a threat (maybe even by making fun of him) due to his height and build... only to immediately, sorely regret it.
Still on the possibly disturbing crack side of things: he makes a big show of hitting on women, particularly the maids in Capricorn's village, and there might actually be some desire under him just liking to pose as this Big Intimidating Man showing off his power by making women in an already inferior or subservient position to him squirm in discomfort... but if any of them should ever respond positively, even just in an attempt to get protection or some sort of special treatment out of him, he wouldn't know how to handle it. Like, it would temporarily short-circuit his brain. The closest he ever got to getting a woman to acknowledge his flirting in any significant way besides pulling back from him and reaching the nearest exit as fast as possible is probably that time a girl rejected him by telling him he had bad breath and then he killed her with snakes and resolved to chew mint leaves for the rest of his life because he's such a confident person. Even Roxane probably never exchanged more than five words (mostly to the effect of "get lost!" and "fuck you!" on her side) with him.
For the last one, a bittersweet one: Basta actually liked Fulvio, the black jacket who got read into One Thousand and One Nights in exchange for Farid. A lot of Capricorn's men did, really, but I like to picture Fulvio as a boy from our world, probably coming from a poor, dysfunctional home, that Basta in particular kind of took under his wing (as much as Basta could do that for anyone...) because he saw something of himself in him. This is, ofc, based on nothing but my hazy memories of reading the Italian translation of Inkheart, where I'm 90% sure a bunch of black jackets are ready to beat Mo to a pulp as soon as they notice Fulvio has disappeared and Basta himself gets all in Mo's face and tells him he will personally make him "pay dearly for Fulvio."

note: di ko alam kung short drabble pa ba toh or ano eh HAHAHAHAHA basta yun na siguro yun, enjoy nalang!
Tumblr media
“Di ka naniniwala sa love at first sight?!”
“Ang boring mo naman!”
“Na love at first sight nga ako sa boyfriend ko eh!”
“Shut up ka nga, Eli. Nakakabitter ka eh.”
“Pero seryoso ka ba, YN?”
Tumawa muna ako sa mga kaibigan ko bago sumagot, “Hindi and bago kayo magtanong kung bakit, hindi ko alam kung dahil di ko pa nararanasan or it isn’t just really true. On my perspective lang ha, baka mag recite ka na naman sakin eh Eli.”
“Aray ha, YN. Pero I think di mo palang nararanasan kaya ka di naniniwala, pero trust me once na naranasan mona. Mapapa Oh my god ka nalang.” “Ang OA mo talaga kahit kailan, Elisha.” Tinawanan ko nalang ang dalawa kong kaibigan na nagtatalo.
“Pero on serious matter, YN. Some of us are getting settle na oh. Ikaw ba?” Tanong ng isa kong kaibigan. Settle. Which mean settle with someone, have a happy life and a family. Oh how nice that would be. “Ofcourse I want to settle with someone, pero for now I’ll just enjoy my freedom and ohmy naman maraming time pa para dyan di muna ako magmamadali.” Sabi ko habang tumatawa.
Tumblr media
And yes, kinain ko yung sinabi kong yun 1 year ago. “Yea enjoy my freedom my ass, nang jojoke time ka pala that time ha, YN.” Luna said, na kinatawa naman ni Eli, “I know right, now look who’s pregnant and about to get married soon.” Dagdag ni Eli.
I know it’s a little too fast, pero I know my old self would laugh at me when I said this. “Why? Na love at first sight ako eh.” “Tanga! Sabi mo di ka naniniwala tas ngayon sasabihin mo yan.” Sagot naman ni Eli, “I told you naman kasi diba, you’ll believe it once na maranasan mo yun.” Luna said while smiling, this girl really know so much huh.
I chuckle, “Well hello ladies, can I steal my fiancée?”
Tumblr media
“Your friend told me na you didn’t believe in love at first sight.” Unang sinabi agad ni Jaehyun ng makauwi kami, sinamaan ko sya ng tingin. “So what? That’s only for fairytales lang kaya.” Sagot ko bago pumunta ng sala para maupo, “Dahan dahan, love.” He said while helping me sit down.
“Eh? Only in fairytales? Then explain why did you told your friends na you fell in love at me the moment you set your eyes on me.” Nakangising sabi neto, kahit kelan talaga napaka asar neto. “Assuming ka masyado, ikaw nga tong di makauwi nun dahil gusto mong makuha number ko bago ka umalis.”
“Why would I miss a chance with someone so gorgeous like you?” Yun, dito toh magaling eh. Magaling mangpakilig.
Pero look at me now, engaged and 7 months pregnant. Engaged to the most sweetest and caring man I ever met. Me and my baby is so lucky to have him in our life. May not be my plan, but the best thing that happen to me.
Maybe love at first sight is really real.

"Cheerful Adventures : Tales of my Life"
Hi! My name is James Ryle, Often called as "Sing-Sing", "Ting-Ting", but I prefer to be called by my second name which is "Ryle". I maybe weird, but yes I am huhu. I am the 1st born child in our family, first "buang" to be born haha. My life is like riding a bicycle, however I don't know how to ride bicycles so I stumble more often then get up again to get going, that's my life.
I am an introvert but extrovert at the same time. I am Bisexual, mixed but not matched huhu. My childhood was fun, truly. I'm friendly like every where I want to talk to someone but sometimes I prefer to be alone, Crazy right? Mood swings like a girl huhu.
I like intimacy so much but I'm too shy to accept one. I love cats, my mum and I have the same liking with our pets. My zodiac sign is Cancer, hard to say but yeah I'm too emotional sometimes-everytime. I take everything to heart. I got many insecurities because of this behavior but when I'm with my friends, I feel accepted and comfortable which make me forget about my insecurities. I love them.
I was the first to be born from the four childrens of our parents as I've mentioned earlier, my mother name me as James Ryle, weirdly beautiful. My father always jokes about how I look when I was born, he said I look just like my mother haha. Well I don't care, my mother for me is the most beautiful woman I've ever met in my life. I can't say I'm a momma's boy because I'm very disobedient child to both my parents huhu. I love them but I'm too shy to express and show it. I'll figure it out some day, I hope. I would hug them so tight close to my heart, they're the most precious creature to be created by God for me. Ok back, I actually can't remember what happened to me when I was a toddler, of course, but my beloved grand parents and my aunties and uncles and of course my arents was there to tell me bout my behavior when I was a baby. They said I was so cute, well I think I'm not huhu. They said I almost got adopted by a couple because of poverty but my grandparents didn't agreed, thankfully.
I was loved and supervised by my lolo and lola when I was a toddler, they even brought me to bohol where my auntie lisa and uncle emang live, when I learned to stand and walk. My grandparents introduced me to my relatives there, we went to site seeing ( pasyal ). They said I was so random that I almost swallowed a jelly container ( those jelly something that is everywhere to be found and it costs you 1 peso for one ) then they said I almost slipped at my aunt's kitchen because I was so naughty. Well what an adventure for a naughty kid. The most random part is the reason for our sudden leave. Huhu, my grandparents got into a fight, a nonsense fight just because of the plastic nipple like thing of my nursing bottle is teared and they are fighting, finding who is to be blamed huhu. Well yeah after that we went back to Lapu-Lapu where we actually live.
My childhood is full of discoveries, what do you expect from a naughty kid huhu. I think I almost tried all the kinds of games, except for expensive ones. Chinese garter, tumbang preso, dodge ball, buwan-buwan, and more, so much to mention and to explain how satisfied I am with my childhood. I've met many peoples who left an unforgettable memories in my childhood. When I was like 5 or 6 my mum introduced me the school and why I need to go to school, "Basta naa kay stars gikan ni teacher dal an ka og pasalubong sa imong papa", like that which make me excited to go to school. Well I enjoyed schooling anyway, I don't think I'm a fast learner but I love learning.
As time pass by, I slowly developed my interest in Math, the most unwanted subject for most of my classmates in elementary. Well I view it as fun like how challenging it can be to find the correct answer. At my elementary days I was rarely seen to be in the top students, "well what do you expect from a naughty kid " huhu. Atleast I'm having fun, I value fun all the time like as if there is no tomorrow. After all I'm just a kid, I don't know how valuable education is for my future. Now I regret not being serious woth my education when I was in elementary and junior high school because I missed all the opportunities for new learnings and more. Well now I'm working on my best to get a high grade as preparation for higher education. Now that I have grown such age, I got many realizations about life. I now appreciate my parents more.
I am 17 years old now, currently taking up Accountancy Business and Management, the strand that aligns with my interest. Planning to take Bachelor of Science in Accounting (BSA) course in college. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't agree with my dream course. Well I have a second option course which is Secondary Education major in Mathematics. In the meantime I'm working with my requirements to apply for a higher education. I am still striving for development in my skills and capabilities as preparation for college. I have this belief which makes me very lazy, "Nothing makes me productive than the last minute." Which why I'm always training my self to be more productive and should value time as gold, but undeniable that this laziness made me really expand my creativity, the mindset that wants a more faster way and easier way to complete the task while still values the output. On in all, in the present, I'm really proud of what I have accomplished now, thinking how far I've come now to just surrender by this pressure, but, this will not stop now, I will work hard to make myself and my parents more proud of me.
Thank you for letting me share my story.

CHAPTER 24
How far can you go for love?
How much can you risk for it?
How much pain are you willing to take?
"Tell me more about him." I never knew I would be put in an uncomfortable situation by telling who is the person I love to the people I also care about.
"How did you two meet? Are guys classmates ever since? Is he good to you? How is he when he is mad? Or when you guys are fighting?" I bowed my head and bit my lower lip as Kuya Tim asked me those questions.
"Teka, teka, teka nga. Bakit ba parang ine interrogate mo naman itong si Rae? Dahil ba ito doon sa bulaklak? Kung iniisip mo na may masamang intensyon yung jowa niya sa kanya eh diba dapat dati pa niya yun nagawa? Eh diba isang taon na sila? Hindi naman siguro sila magtatagal ng ganun kung may masamang balak yung jowa niya. Easy ka lang uy." I heaved a sigh and smiled at Penelope to thank her by lessening the tension.
"I'm sorry about that. I was just.... curious. Jacksion has mentioned him before, he said he met your boyfriend thoigh yes, I already met him as well pero hindi naman kami nagkaroon ng interaction. Jacksion told us that their encounter isn't that ideal, he said your boyfriend was so mad. We are so worried about you, and then I saw those flowers. It just made me overthink." I nodded at him.
I understand, and there is nothing to be worried about actually, not with Benedict and I am confident with that.
"Benedict found me hugging Jacksion, he got jealous that's why he was mad. And that was just the first time, he was also worried about me. That's why I understand his reaction that time."
"Oh ayun naman pala eh! Wala naman pala tayong kailangan ipag alala. Saka jowa ni Rae yun, isang taon na sila. Kung may lubos na nakakakilala sa tao na yun, walang iba kung hindi siya. Tama?"
I don't know why Penelope's statement stopped me a bit. It feels like I'm lying once I nodded and agreed with her. Because the truth is, I didn't really know him at all.
"All right. I'm sorry, Rae. I shouldn't have questioned you like that. I'm really sorry." I lightly smiled at him as I saw how concerned his eyes were while staring down at me.
"It's okay, Kuya Tim. I understand that you're worried." He lightly messed my head.
I lightly flinched and pursed my lips as I remembered Benedict. He always does that to me too. I missed him so much.
"You know that you're like a little sister to me right? Basta you can always call me okay?." I bit my lower lip to stop myself from crying and lightly nodded.
"Ako din, chat chat mo lang din ako. Ako bahala sayo, reresbakan natin mga mananakit sayo." Kuya Tim and I chuckled and Penelope winked at me.
It was past 4 PM when they decided to go home. I bid them Goodbye and slump my body on my bed.
I missed him...
I reached for my phone on my side table and scrolled down to my contacts to look for his number.
I always call him once every day, hoping that he would pick up but of course luck isn't really fond of me. But the mere sound of his phone ringing makes me expect more, it makes me think that he misses me too... He just let me call him but never ended my calls.
I badly want to think that he thinks of me too.
That he doesn't end my call because he knows that I will be hurt by it. That he is letting me call him every day because he also misses me. But then... there's also part of me that thinks that he was just ignoring my calls.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Is this how our relationship is gonna end?
I stood up from my bed and fixed myself.
"I'm not gonna let this end like this."
I heaved a sigh as I found myself standing in front of the Lewis cafe, hoping that he would be there.
"Welcome to Bazin cafe, ma'am." I smiled at the girl who welcomed me and just like the last time I got here, I looked around to see him but to my dismay, there was no Benedict around.
"Si Andrey ba ang hanap mo?" The guy suddenly came up to me. I narrowed my eyes as I recall who he was. He was the guy that teased Benedict last time! He must have known where he is and where he is staying.
"Y-yeah. Is he here?" He scratches his head
"Wala siya eh, isang linggo na din siya hindi pumapasok. Magtatanong nga din ako kung may sakit ba siya o ano kasi hindi siya nagsabi kahit sa boss namin dito." I bit my lower lip and heaved a sigh.
"Thank you." He furrowed his brow at me. I know he wanted to ask more, he must be curious as to why I am looking for him, and why I didn't know anything about him...
It makes me think if Penelope was really right.. Do I really know him?
"Pagkatapos mo mawala at bumalik, si Garcia naman ngayon ang pumalit! Isang buwan na hindi pumapasok yun. May alam ka ba kung bakit? Malapit na ang midterm." I lightly shook my head to our Professor.
It's already March and Benedict is still nowhere to be found. I'm getting worried and anxious. He wasn't like this. I wanted to look for him and talk to him. I want to clear things up with him, especially about what he saw that day with me and Jacksion.
I know he must be on a rough path right now but I don't want our relationship to fall out like this.
If only I was just being honest with him that time. If only I told him what was happening. If only I became more open to him...
If only I trust him enough.
I slowly enter my spare key onto Benedict's door unit. I have been wanting to go inside but I was hesitating since he wasn't here and I don't want to just barge in here. But I have decided to go in now, I might find some valuable information that will lead me to where he is.
I open the door and the lights. It's been almost three months since I got here, and in those months this unit became strange. Like it wasn't the condo I used to clean before when he moved in it wasn't the unit I ate dinner in like It wasn't the unit when we got our second kiss. It feels unfamiliar.
Maybe because the owner wasn't here, he was the one who gave this unit life and not the cleaned floor, properly arranged furniture, almost empty fridge, and not his tucked cold bed.
I slowly lay down on his bed, hoping that it would somewhat ease my sadness but it just got worse.
I missed his warmth...
"I miss you, Benedict." I closed my eyes and felt tears streaming down my cheeks.
"Come back to me, please... I will be better, I will love you better."
I don't know how I slept but I just woke up and the sun was already peeking on his glass wall.
I heaved a sigh and covered the window with the curtains. I look around his room and take my time to admire it. I have never been here, he doesn't want me here because he is scared that we might do it.
Benedict has always been a gentleman, he knows his limitations. I admired his self-control. He never goes overboard with me though I know that he feels that I am ready for it, however, I am not ready for the consequences yet and I guess he knows that too.
It makes me happy to think that he knows me that much.
So much to the point like he studied me...
I went to his study table and ran my hands to all of the things that were there. He is not really into studying, but he is smart, so smart that it makes me wonder what is running into his mind all the time.
I furrowed my brows as I accidentally opened the notebook on his table. I was planning to close it but a yellow sticky note on the very first page caught my attention. There is a handwritten complete address that is somewhat familiar to me.
"Could it be... His hometown address?" But why would he put this here as if he wrote it just in case he might forget it?
It's Saturday and I have decided to go to the address that is on the yellow sticky note.
If ever he is there, I will need to force him to be back home since Friday next week will be our midterm for the second semester. And also will use this chance to apologize and clear everything up with him. I don't want to lose him.
I'll do everything to make him come back to me even if it means losing myself.
"Anong maipaglilingkod ko sayo, Ineng?" I looked at the elderly woman who was standing beside me. I also saw some women in their 40's eyeing me, they were outside the store and were talking to each other before I got out of my car.
"Hello po, magandang tanghali. May kilala po ba kayong Andrey Benedict Garcia?" I saw the elderly woman from the store walking towards us, wanting to know why I am there and who I am looking for.
"Ano daw ang sadya?" I heard the other woman whisper to the woman who asked me earlier.
"Eka si Andrey Benedict Garcia daw."
"Oh, Si Ben! Yung apo nila Felip siguro." Mukha namang pamilyar sa kanila si Benedict.
"Eh kaano ano ka ba ni Ben, Ineng?" My eyes slightly widened. I was hesitating whether I will tell them that I'm his girlfriend or not.
"Uhm–"
"Oh ayan pala si Bernila eh. Bernila, may bisita ang apo mo na si Ben, andine!" Bumaling ako sa matandang babae na naglalakad papunta sa tindahan. Siguro ay nasa 60 na ito.
"Bisita ni Ben ba kamo?" Nakakunot ang noo nitong bumaling samin.
"Hello po! Ako po si Rae, uhm.. Ka-kaibigan po ako ni Benedict." I wanted to say that I'm his girlfriend but something inside me stops me from saying so.
"Ehhh ka-gandang dalaga Bernila.
I almost jumped in shock when someone suddenly spoke behind me.
An elder man chuckled and lightly scratched his head. His eyes somewhat resemble Benedict which made me guess that he must be his Lolo.
"U-uh. Ako po pala si Rae, kaibigan po ni Benedict. Magandang tanghali po. Sinabihan po ako ni Ma'am Bernila na pumunta dito. Pasensya na po at pumasok na po ako sa hardin ninyo, nagandahan po ako sa mga bulaklak." His eyes slightly widened
"Naku, ehh bakit ma'am ang tawag mo kay Bernila haha! Lola nalang. Atsaka ayos lang na pumasok ka dito sa hardin, gusto mo ba ang mga bulaklak?" I nodded and smiled at him.
"Anong paborito mong bulaklak, Ija? Baka meron kami at bibigyan kita." I chuckled and shook my head.
I saw them furrowing their brows.
"Ano?! Walanjong batang iyun! Hindi namin alam na hindi pala pumapasok. Aba kaya pala hindi sinasagot ang mga tawag natin!" Galit na sabi ni Lola Bernila.
So that means, he wasn't here as well. And his family doesn't even know where he is either.
Where are you, Benedict?
"Kumalma ka Bernila. Hindi mo din ba siya matawagan, Ija?" I shook my head
"H-hindi din po." I bowed my head and bit my lower lip
"Sinasabi ko na nga ba! Kaya hindi ko gustong payagan ang batang iyun tumuloy sa Maynila dahil alam kong hindi siya mapapabuti doon. Baka kung ano nang nangyayari doon? Hindi pwedeng puro paghihiganti–"
I slightly raised my head and found Lolo Felip stopping Lola Bernila on talking and he smile at me awkwardly.
"P-pasensya ka na, Ija. Hindi din namin alam kung nasaan ang apo namin." I slowly nodded.
"Magtapat ka sakin, Ija. Kaano ano ka talaga ni Benedict?" My eyes widened as Lola Bernila seriously asked.
"U-uh ano po.. G-girlfriend niya po ako." Lola Bernila and Lolo Felip gasped. But unlike Lola Bernila, Lola Felip seemed to like the idea.
"Pasensya na po sa abala, akala ko po ay nandito si B-Benedict. Kapag po nakausap ko siya ay ipagbibigay alam ko po sa inyo agad." Tumayo na ako at nagpaplano na sanang umalis.
"Saan ka pupunta?" Lola Bernila furrowed her brows
"Ah,, u-uuwi na po ako."
"Sa Maynila?" I nodded and I heard them gasping.
"Ay nako dito ka na mag hapunan. Nobya ka ni Benedict, kaya halika at pumarine ka sa loob at magpahinga muna." Tumalima naman ako sa mag asawa at sumunod na pumasok sa bahay nila.

the wheels go round and round
Chika to the max kami ng aking future mother-in-law last last night. More on updating sa buhay, asking kung anong work ko and some random stuff.
The chika went on to the topic of Bimby's previous relationship. Tita Cory was actually babbling about how she wanted Bimby to have a relationship with a girl who has a job and is actually kind.
I really don't have any idea sa depth ng relationship nila ni Jhosan before because all I can ever do is gather information from Bimby himself and his friend who had been a part of a somewhat, noisy fiasco on social media. But hearing all of the complaints from Tita Cory herself was on a different level.
She mentioned, "arte kaayo, dili maghugas pinggan or makamao mulaba, sige lang laag, biyaan iyang bata way bantay basta makalaag". Those were her general concerns about Jhosan.
I didn't really think much about it because those were normal complaints naman of a mother. You know how mothers are, observant and very judgemental. Hanggang sa dumating sa part na nagpasalamat sya sa akin. I really didn't know why nung umpisa. Why was she even thanking me? What did I do?
"Salamat kaayo Niz kay ikaw na ang asahawon ni Dodong. Dugay na kaayo ko nagsige ingon kang Dondong na mangita siya'g babae nga may trabaho ug buutan kaayo."
"Salamat talaga Niz kasi ikaw ang mapapangasawa ni Dodong. Matagal ko ng sinasabi sa kanya na maghanap ng babaeng may trabaho at mabait."
Now, I never claimed to be kind nor bragged about my job. Yes, graduate ako ng engineering and never akong nabakante even though I am not working outside (corpo job) but I have never ever heard the words thank you for doing what I normally do.
Hearing those words from her melted my heart. Imagine, my future mother-in-law, thanking me for loving her son? That's huge, a boost on so many different levels.
I also went on to explain how I was very okay with the setup of Bimby having contact with his son. How I can differentiate pettiness and civility when it comes to the topic of his son, Zee. At this time, she went on to say how Jhosan's mother asked about me.
"Maganda ba ang ugali ng bagong nobya ni Dodong?"
"Oo naman, " Tita Cory replied. "Kung masama ang ugali nya, magpapadala ba sya ng pera samin para kay Zee?"
She sounded so proud when she said it and I feel proud of myself too. That's how I know that Tita Cory will defend me without even meeting me personally yet. And in that part, I feel so lucky, blessed.
I have often reminded myself of the saying, "It pays to be kind". And for the longest time, I suffered things from the past that made me question kindness, and had multiple reasons for almost wanting to give up being one.
But now that this has happened, Bimby happened, I really thank God for instilling kindness in me. So this is how God repays kindness pala. An exchange that is so rewarding and heart-melting.

Some thoughts about Basta (and Capricorn)
I just saw a post about the Inkheart characters and how PTSD could be a possible explanation for Basta‘s behavior. And I had thoughts about it.
So I decided to share them, even though I have no idea if anyone is interested in this.
I think that PTSD is kinda a part of what’s going on with Basta. We know he had a rough childhood, wasn’t treated well by his parents or the people that were supposed to care for him back then. And later Fenoglio stated that Capricorn didn’t treat him much better. (And let’s be honest, we also see that Capricorn only „cares“ for him as long as he‘s useful). And then there’s all the other stuff, like that time he got both his arms burned or later when Mo read him, Capricorn and Dustfinger out of their world.
So yeah, he surely has been through a lot.
But while that would be enough to end up with PTSD, I think he fits the criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder a bit better.
According to the DSM-5 the symptoms of Antisocial Personality Disorder are
• Failure to confirm to social norms concerning lawful behaviors, as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest. (Do I even have to say anything here?Basta killed people, is the reason for Dustfingers scars, stole stuff, broke into houses, used to set things on fire, kidnapped people, all of this multiple times and in Inkspell it‘s literally mentioned that he was arrested after Capricorn died)
• Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure (Tbh this is more of a Capricorn thing, who also has ASPD imo, just a different subtype, but I‘ll get into that later)
• Impulsivity or failure to plan. (Throughout all the books Basta is CONSTANTLY doing impulsive stuff, and in Inkheart Capricorn literally said that this was a problem with him)
• Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults. (I can’t mention all the times this was the case, it would be too much)
• Having no regard for the safety of self or others. (Pretty self explanatory.)
• Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations (A little more difficult, because of the way the inkworld works and how Basta's life turned out in our world. He‘s never had a normal job. His job basically was being a criminal.)
• Lack of remorse, or inability to feel guilt, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another. (The times he killed people and didn’t give a shit? The fact that he had no problem with threatening children? Just to name a few things. He never really seemed to feel guilty for all the things he did. The only time he kinda feels bad about it is when he thinks this could cause problems for himself, like that time he made sure the cat in Meggies room could escape through the window. He didn’t care about the cat. He was worried that it would bring bad luck to him to let it starve in there. Just as an example.)
So with all this we can be pretty sure he has ASPD.
But there’s more to unpack.
One of the criteria for the disorder is that these or at least similar antisocial behaviors already occurred before the age of 15. We don’t know exactly if they did, but I think we can assume it. If I remember it correctly Fenoglio mentioned that Basta was younger than Meggie, wo was 12 at that time, when Capricorn took him in. And probably not because he felt sorry for the boy, but because he saw something in him that could be useful later.
Speaking about Capricorn. I said that I’m sure he also has ASPD. But he’s pretty different from Basta. At least in some ways. He’s so cold most of the time, much less impulsive, he’s able to plan ahead and also to control a bunch of other criminals.
To make this a little shorter, there’s a lot of different theories about this that include different subtypes, but one basically says that you can somewhat put people with ASPD in two different groups.
The ones that are cold, more rational and manipulative (like Capricorn) and the ones that are more openly aggressive and impulsive, like Basta. (That’s also where people sometimes draw the line between psychopaths and sociopaths, even though there‘s also a little more to that, but I‘m not gonna get into it now cause this text is already ridiculously long)
But to stay with all this 'subtype of ASPD'-stuff for a little longer - you might wonder at this point where Basta's superstitions and his constant fear of bad luck fits into all this. And I have a theory for that as well.
Malignant Narcissism. A syndrome first described by Otto Kernberg. It’s, to keep it short, a mix of narcissistic personality disorder (which btw very often appears together with ASPD) and ASPD.
It’s, apart from all the stuff I mentioned earlier, characterized by sadism (remember how Basta actually enjoys threatening people, how he likes to tell stories about all the awful stuff he and others did in detail, watching people get uncomfortable, etc? Sounds pretty sadistic to me.) AND paranoia. He’s constantly afraid something bad is gonna happen. But this could also be due to some OCD that he might have as well. (I gotta say this here, with personality disorders it’s not uncommon for people to have multiple ones that overlap. That’s what often makes it so hard to give a proper diagnosis.)
But what’s more interesting to me is that malignant narcissists, while usually not caring about anyone but themselves and being unable to maintain healthy relationships with others (remember when Dustfinger was hiding in Bastas house and mentions that Basta has literally no friends?), can show some sort of loyalty to a few people. Which is the case for Basta, since he‘s incredibly loyal to Capricorn.
So while generally being a pretty awful person, Basta has, at least somewhat, the ability to care about a selected few individuals.
Which I think is also the reason why there’s more fanfiction about him than Capricorn. Capricorn doesn’t care about anyone. He doesn’t even care about his own mother, or Resa, who was known to be his favorite of out all the maids. As soon as she caused problems for him, he decided to get rid of her. So with him, there’s a lot less to explore and to work with.
And, something more general about ASPD, it‘s as far as we know at this point, usually caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as neglect or abuse during childhood.
And Capricorn is a great example for this, since the genetic and environmental factors are both definitely there. We know his father used to beat him, and Mortola displays a lot of ASPD symptoms herself.
And for Basta, it was mentioned that he was a very unhappy child. Sadly we don’t know anything about his parents or what exactly happened during his childhood. (Maybe we could ask Cornelia about his parents in the next livestream?)
There’s still more I could talk about, for example some interesting studies about ASPD and reactions to fear that would also apply to both Basta and Capricorn, just in different ways or how ASPD works in general, but maybe I‘ll make a different post about that sometime.
Also feel free to tell me what you guys think about this, it‘s super interesting and I bet there’s even more to say that I haven’t talked about.

The secondary villains in the Inkworld are so damn charismatic, like, Firefox , Piper, as Basta👌
THEY REALLY ARE, AND I LOVE THAT SO MUCH
I’ve talked a lot abt how much I love the villains in the Inkheart trilogy, and how they really make the story, and I think that’s shown very poignantly with the secondary villains, because it’s so easy to make a really good main villain, isn’t it? Okay, it’s not true. as a writer, I know that, but it is true that people will spend all their efforts into developing a “good” main antagonist, but not focus on their secondary villains, which is really a mistake in my opinion, because most of the time the secondary villains are actually the ones we see more typically inbetween the serious plot leading up to scenes with the Big Bad™.
Inkheart doesn’t do that and we get lots and lots of really good secondary antagonist characterization and motivation and scenes and personality and it’s soOOOOOO fun watching any of them in scenes, and how they steal the spotlight with their drama and scheming and charisma and slyness and deliciously evil morals.

ᴀᴜᴛʜᴏʀ ꜱᴘᴇᴀᴋꜱ ➢ wanted to start this idea but never got to write it, hope it gets love since it was fun to write and i just enjoyed it in general
Tumblr media
every time you and the cast would wrap up a movie was great because it meant you guys would have interviews and press tours to attend. for you, the games and trivia games were the ones you all really enjoyed because it just would be chaotic.
still it would a great time, you got along with everyone so no drama would surround you guys which was a good thing when you work with other actors. when you first started working with marvel, you hit it off with mackie at first, during captain america: the winter soldier.
your publicist makes sure you had time to move things around so that you could make it the live event with the rest of the cast.
you and sebastian were together but didn’t live with each other since you two were still waiting for the right time to move in together. anthony would tease you guys, saying you’re both married but not being committed. all jokes aside, you two did love each other but time would take it’s course and you would be happy soon enough.
when you arrived surrounding to the Los Angeles press junket, you met a few co-stars back stage. obviously you saw all the girls—with you adored. when you saw your boyfriend, you ran sneakily behind him before scaring him slightly. he jumped back from his seat where he was talking to anthony and letitia about something.
anthony looked up seeing your face, “you finally showed up. he was getting worried.” he chuckled before getting up to hug you while you hugged back letting go to see letitia and greet her as well. you turned to sebastian seeing that he was wearing something remotely similar to your outfit.
he wore a black and white stripped jacket which you wore one like that but it was a tad different with a matching skirt. he eyes you up and down seeing what you were wearing this time, letitia gawked at the couple matching even if it was accidentally. “you guys look so cute.” she squealed rapidly pointing at both of them as they both chuckled.
anthony hummed, “huh. what’s up with matchy matchy?” he questioned them as sebastian shrugged honestly not getting how they would of done that. the man obviously thought she looked gorgeous in that skirt and jacket so it didn’t bother him at all. “i think you look beautiful.” he admired you as you blushed and buried your head in his crock of his neck while thanking him.
anthony rolled his eyes until the russo brothers came telling everyone that it was time to start the family feud game and start the live broadcast. you walked towards everyone, where the russo brothers went to place you all in teams: blue vs purple.
anthony and joe did anything to keep mackie and seb from the opposite teams to not create that much chaos or to create it which didn’t matter. you went on the blue team with chris, scarlett, letitia, anthony and bautista. then the red team consisting with benedict, zoe, mark, chris hemsworth, pom and sebastian.
you greeted your team waiting for them to start as you made small talk with anthony and dave as you were in the middle of both of them. once the russo’s started—it was all chaotic from that point. “why don’t the blue team introduce themselves.” joe spoke looking at the blue team.
everyone from the team would get and when it got you mackie, he just was being a fool but so hilarious whenever he spoke. “i’m anthony mackie, i’m a libra.” bringing up his sign for anyone. “I’m y/n y/l/n.” you would smile when it would get to you.
the other team would do the same, then making the russo’s to explain how the game would work and all the rules. once you all got the hang of it, chris and zoe ended up being the first ones to make it and compete against each other. “which infinity war character would put on the best concert?”
zoe getting it first because pratt was slow, said his character which she got right being the first one on the answer board. benedict would repeat zoe’s answer not understanding the concept of family feud as the whole blue team would tease him on that. “good answer!” anthony laughed making you look up and chuckle as he defended himself.
“i’m english! whoa, stop.” joe explained it the english man and he looked relieved after he got the idea, getting the right answer again. when it got to sebastian he said dr. strange and got it correct then getting close to three strikes when it was at zoe.
the russo’s giving out clues and hints didn’t make the blue team wasn’t pleased because it was too easy for them. “what! you cheatin, you think steve harvey would give a hint?” chris would yell out to joe then you would agree with him. them all laughing at chris getting annoyed but not in a serious manner.
you would see that they would go and talk and you stopped them as they weren’t exactly playing the right way. “wait? you guys can’t confirm.” you spoke up pointing at zoe trying to talk to pom and the rest of her team. joe would confirm that, that would be true.
zoe trying to get another clue but the blue team interfering with her telling her no more clues. “okay, you know what. basta. i’m going to say rocket.” when her and benedict got them wrong it would be time for the blue team to steal.
chris would pull you guys together to confirm he answer but mackie kept repeating where their clue was—you would remind him that you thought that was the clue. “what? no, that’s their clue! who producing this?” you would look over to see them talking about who to pick. “well if it’s a guardian... then who did we already say? we said drax, already said star lord, we said rocket. so groot?” you implied.
letitia nodded when chris still wasn’t sure if that was the answer looking at the camera trying to get an answer from the fans. “feed me the answer. mackie says it groot but i don’t trust mackie—yes, you do!” mackie would say.
“i say trust him—thank you!” you would say making anthony hugging you when sebastian would glare at him making him laugh out loud looking back at him. letting go and telling joe that, they picked groot for the answer. “do they say groot for the win?” joe asked making the board ding causing the blue team to cheer for the win that they just got.
the next question being who would they take to prom... as letitia would take your answer, you’d have to figure on out when make chose his answer. “as much as i don’t like him. and his great hair.. uh bucky.” anthony paused. obviously getting the right answer and it being number one. anthony would look at sebastian but he would shake his head getting flustered.
it was your turn and you couldn’t say anything because you honestly had no idea, “alright y/n, you are up.” you hummed trying to see if you could think of someone on the spot. “look around.” they would try to help you to get a answer, anthony looking at you grinning.
“come on. imma look away cause you’re thinkin about me.” he would say looking the other way dramatically making you laugh then patting his shoulder clicking your tongue. “okay, i’m going to say uh... the falcon, sam wilson?” anthony grinning at you tilting his head while showing his bicep.
sebastians head rapidly going up when she chose anthony, “boo!” he booed putting a thumbs down and blowing raspberries at her direction. everyone laughing at his jealousy as you frowned feeling bad, “i’m sorry!” you quietly said as joe kept moving on. “alright facebook did you say sam wilson?” he asked the board and it dinged making anthony cheer at his name on the list.
almost finishing the questions, it was between mackie and hemsworth picking who would win in a staring contest. going around the purple team, they all started to get all the answer right and it went to seb. he looked around stoping at you and just staring, “i’m going with y/c/n.” you shook your head then waiting to see the answer. “did you say y/c/n, the sorceress?” he got that right making them all cheer.
they all go in a line getting all the answers right when seb was up again, “don’t screw it up bucky like you always do.” anthony yelled out making him stare up at him intensely, “what did you say to me—you heard what i said.” they kept going back and forth with each other.
you kept trying to contain yourself from laughing as they were so childish between themselves. “i’m gonna go with the falcon.” sebastian said staring at him continuously. when it came on the screen, you put your head down in disbelief.
the next round was you and sebastian and when you didn’t go up because you didn’t know it was your turn, joe told you to go up. you looked at him and walked to him. you put your hands in your pockets, seeing seb waiting for you. “oh oh. this is about to become intense, girlfriend vs boyfriend.” joe teased when you smiled and put you hand over seb’s.
you pulled away getting ready to answer your question and you probably knew it would work out because you hated being pressured. anthony russo looked at both of you and mentioned how you guys were matching, “you guys are matching, just noticed that—isn’t it cute!” letitia yelled but getting shushed by you.
“okay, which infinity war character takes the longest to get ready in the morning?” when he announced it you did your best to press the button by sebastian had quicker reflexes then you. you groaned watching him chuckle, “i swear my button is broken.” you complained but it was all jokes because you just lost.
“i think it works—mmh, no it’s broken. hurry say your answer.” you rolled your eyes wanting to hurry and leave, “downey. tony stark.” when the answer popped up you rolled your eyes, swatting your hand away. seb went over to hug you as you sighed but hugged him back anyway.
the ending was horrible because the opposite team won making you annoyed... you ended up having a good time with your friends. you walked passed all of them to use the bathroom and you went to open the door, you were tackled by some hands making you squeal.
you turned around to see sebastian and you sighed then when you composed yourself, you hit his shoulder. “don’t do that. i was about to hurt you.” he chuckled lowering his hands to your waist and pulling you close. “i missed you.” he mumbled kissing the side of your cheek. “we have to hurry for the press, then you can miss me even more.”

KABILANG BUHAY
× A TRESE ONESHOT ×
[Crispin x Ghost!Reader]
Tumblr media
📝 Summary: Your demigod husband remembers you—everything about you—and how much he absolutely loved you. He remembers everything, including the memory that hurt the most.
📌 Warning: Contains fluff, angst, character death, and mentions of violence (because an angry Crispin being the son of a wargod is bound to shed some blood somewhere). Masakit po talaga 'tong songfic na 'to, trust me. If you don't want to get hurt, scroll awaaaay. Pero if you want maximum 1000% ultra heavy pain, then listen to the song below on repeat while reading, too.
Song: Kabilang Buhay by Bandang Lapis
(word count: 5,642)
Tumblr media
"Masasayang mga araw na kasama kita."
Warm. Crispin always remembered you to be so warm—every single part of you. The heat of your skin against his whenever he held you, that whimsical sparkle in your eyes whenever you saw the little joys in life, that sprightly curve of your lips whenever you two teased each other, and the radiance he saw from you whenever you were around the people you loved.
In his eyes, there was always a halo around your head or a beam of light following you around. Perhaps he was biased; perhaps he saw you through rose-tinted glasses, but it didn't matter to him. To the demigod, you were everything he ever wanted.
You were the one.
You were also one of the sweetest people he'd ever met. Every morning without a fail, there would always be a hot cup of kape and a plate of pandesal on the table—not only for him, but for everyone else in your little family, too. Alexandra, Hank, and of course, his younger brother Basilio. Even before you became his girlfriend, you'd treated them as your own loved ones.
That was the day he knew you were truly the one for him. The one who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. The one he wanted to build a home with. The woman he wanted to marry and have children with, if you were okay with it (when that conversation came, you said you would be happy and honored to be his wife).
Crispin said it was the other way around. It was he who was fortunate and honored to be your husband. You'd laughed in response, kissing his cheek. There were no fancy rings or a formal, elaborate proposal involved, but that day—he remembered clearly that you had that conversation on a chilly December 1st, 9:24PM, right before you two went to bed—was an unspoken promise.
You two would be inseparable and together 'til death do you part.
Going back to that coffee and bread, he always wondered how you managed to keep it so fresh (you said it was a secret, but later on you spilled the beans to him after him pestering you). Even if he woke up at noon because of missions with his bossing and his brother, palaging mainit ang kape at pandesal. You must have had some sort of superpower you weren't telling him (you rolled your eyes, telling him that superpower came in the form of a microwave).
"Paglalambing at kulit mo na hindi nakakasawa."
He was by no means clingy or touch-starved, but whenever he was around you, he had the need to at least hold you in any way. Sometimes, it was the usual PDA (Basilio and Maliksi teased him about it, but he didn't care if it meant having some sort of contact with you; Alexandra just let it be because she knew how much you two loved each other). In public, you guys toned it down—settling with holding hands or you just linking your arm through his. If he was driving the car, his hand would either be innocently resting on your thigh or your hand which was on your lap. If you were the one driving the car, then it would be your hand on his thigh or his hand. He loved to draw circles on your skin whenever he was daydreaming or starting to doze off, too.
You as a couple often expressed your love for each other in different ways, and not just by saying it out loud. One thing Crispin adored the most about your relationship was the way you voicelessly said "I love you". If it wasn't clear enough that acts of service was one of your love languages, then he could understand that you loved him back through three taps.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
At first, he had no clue what it meant. You just kept doing it whenever you were near him, on whatever body part you could touch. If he was driving? Tap, tap, tap on his thigh. If he was the one cooking? You'd hug him from behind and then one of your fingers would go tap, tap, tap on his waist. If you were eating together? You'd take his palm then just... tap, tap, tap while chewing on whatever food it was you had in your mouth.
He recalled that afternoon you guys were eating at a simple Japanese place. While you slurped up some of the wheat noodles and the savory soup, you were excitedly doing a little happy dance as you ate—the one you did whenever you ate something you found yummy. Frankly, Crispin found it endearing. He, too, was guzzling down some of the ramen when you reached out for his hand then laid it on the table palm up.
With a mischievous smile and your puffed up cheeks looking like a chipmunk from the noodles you'd gobbled up, you gently tapped his palm with your index finger, that same glint in your eye whenever you did that gesture.
"... Anong ginagawa mo, mahal?" Crispin chuckled, a brow raised. He found it cute but he had no idea what it was supposed to stand for.
"Wala lang," you mysteriously answered in a muffled voice, swallowing.
"You know, you shouldn't talk when your mouth is full," he pointed out, amused. You snorted, gulping.
"Not my fault you asked a question, Crispin," you retorted, shoving in another bite of noodley goodness with your chopsticks. You did a mini-wiggle when the umami flavor exploded on your tongue (the ramen was bussin', bestie). Ratatouille would be impressed!
"But seriously, what does the tap stand for?" your boyfriend wondered. You did it again. Tap, tap, tap.
"Isn't it obvious?" you smiled. He then sweat-dropped.
"Wait, keep smiling," Crispin leaned over the table, removing a tiny bit of the dahon sibuyas stuck on one of your front teeth with his nail. He then popped that finger into his mouth, making you blink at the action.
"Ay, may naiwan pala. Hehehehehe." With how long you two have been dating, you were no longer embarrassed if you did get anything stuck in your teeth and he had to get it out (it's happened in more occasions than you could count). You did the same to him (and trust me, you were way past the stage of getting grossed out from the gross habits couples did). At least you two were a hundred percent comfortable and open to one another, right? Sanaol.
Crispin nodded, going back to eating his noodles, "Okay, back to the topic. What does this—" He tapped your palm the same way you did. "—even mean?"
Your grin just grew wider then you whispered into his ear, "I love you."
"... I love you, too," he answered automatically, still not understanding. "But what do the taps mean? You keep doing it and—"
You did it again on his hand.
"I." Tap.
"Love." Tap.
"You." Tap.
At long last, that look of realization came upon his features, "... Aaaaaaaaah."
You chuckled, all brightness and merriness from your revelation to the man you loved. "Gets mo na, mahal?"
He scratched the back of his head sheepishly, "Oo, mahal. Hehe."
"... Can we order another bowl of ramen? Please?" With those puppy-dog eyes? Crispin could never resist. He'd rip the world apart for you and build it back up from scratch if you wanted him to.
That was how deep his love was for you. Kapag nagmamahal ang isang diyos, walang imposible... 'di ba?
He was already raising a hand to call for a waiter, "Sure. Basta maubos mo."
"... And if half lang maubos ko?"
He sighed, "... Edi ako kakain sa anong maiiwan." What was the saying whenever you found your soulmate? Oh, yes.
True love is getting fat together.
Maybe it was true for both of you.
When you two exited the ramen place, you patted your bloated tummy. "Haaaay, busog na busog si food baby," you sighed in happiness, adjusting the the top of your high-waisted skirt to loosen it up for more space. You elbowed him slightly, wiggling your eyebrows at him and mimicking Kylie Jenner, "Soooo, I'm thirty-four weeks today."
"'Luh, ang drama mo," Crispin snickered, poking your rounded side playfully and making you pout. "Nagdadalang tao ka pala, ha. Ako ang tatay pero hindi mo sinabi sa akin na buntis ka." He wouldn't lie, but thoughts of you being pregnant with a child warmed his entire being. Mini-yous and mini-hims running around.
What a dream.
"Nagdadalang tae lang po, manong," you stuck your tongue out at him, then stopped. He stopped walking, too, looking at you questioningly.
"What? What's wrong?"
"Mahal?" you paused. Gulugulugulugulu. Oh no. Mayday, mayday!
"Did you forget something at the restaurant?" he asked. You shook your head in response, telling him there was an emergency.
"... Mahal, natatae ako."
"Like, now?" You nodded at him with wide, doe-like irises. His eyes crinkled, finding the situation hilarious. "Really? Oh shit. Literally. Is this because we were talking about poop?"
Crispin could only cackle as you rummaged through your bag for some wet wipes (and the situation led to you two running around the mall like psychos looking for the nearest restroom—grabe ang cold sweat mo, sis; it was that type of pooping session).
As he waited outside the women's comfort room, he found himself smiling like a weirdo from your date today. Nagdadalang tae o nagdadalang tao, he wouldn't love you any other way.
"Punong-puno ng ligaya ang ating pagsasama."
He found himself unconsciously doing the tapping to you, as well. Tap. Tap. Tap. He only now realized how many times you've been saying "I love you" everyday. Usually, you'd only verbally say it out loud three times: in the morning waking up, whenever he left for a mission, or the times you went to sleep together (because of the nature of his work, it was uncommon, but if he was at home during the night, he'd make sure to say it to you). But now that he knew what the taps meant, he counted them for one week from Monday to Sunday.
You were sitting on the couch, on your stomach and sprawled vertically over his lap. He was watching a basketball game on television while you were on your phone, scrolling through Facebook. It was all quiet until he tapped his finger thrice on your calf. You beamed, rolling over to face him then gently tapping his cheek three times—not with your fingers, but with your hands, smooshing his cheeks then pecking his lips.
"Fwifee-hweif," he said. You tilted your head at him, letting go of his cheeks.
"What was that?" you curiously inquired.
"Fifty-eight," Crispin gave you his signature flirty grin. "You tapped me one hundred seventy-four times today. And one hundred seventy-four divided by three—because I love you has three syllables—is equal to fifty-eight." His affectionate gaze to you softened. "Mahal, you've told me I love you fifty-eight times today."
You just hugged him and hid your face in his neck, "I love you, too, manooooong."
"... Wanna watch a K-drama tonight?" he said, his voice rumbling through his chest as you laid your head on it.
"Mmhmm."
You guys ended up binging Scarlet Heart Ryeo and bawling your eyes out (Crispin cried louder than you, actually, and the box of tissues was passed back n' forth between you two).
"Punyeta, walang Season Two?" Crispin cursed, blowing his nose.
You hiccupped, shaking your head and scrolling through the categories, "W-Wala e-eh, m-mahal."
"Seryoso ka ba?" he gaped, wiping his tears after wiping yours. "That's how it ends?"
You nodded, sniffling, "Uh-huh."
The next morning, when all of you gathered in the kitchen for breakfast, Alexandra and the others could only stare, nagtataka kung bakit namamaga ang mga mata niyo (yeah, they were swollen as hell).
"... Anyare sa inyo?" Alexandra quizzed. Hank, while pouring everyone some juice, had a worried look on his face, too.
"Nag-away ba kayong dalawa, Kuya?" Basilio questioned. You both shook your head simultaneously.
"Hindi," Crispin shortly answered, exhausted from crying with you all night.
"Nanood lang kami ng K-drama," you supplied, as worn out as your boyfriend was.
"Aaaaaaah."
"Na parang wala nang sisira ng lahat."
The date always held some significance to him, not only because it meant only a few days before Christmas but also because it was the day you promised to one another that you'd be endgame.
December 1st.
It would repeat in his head over and over again until the day he died.
The two of you were lying in bed, the cold night air entering through the open windows. You were leaning on his chest in-between his lap, reading The Count of Monte Cristo. He noticed that your expression often shifted between being giddy to being angry or smug at what was happening to the main character.
"... Mahal?"
"Yeah?" you responded, not taking your eyes off the novel. You flipped another page.
"What kind of ring do you want? Para alam ko kung magkano ang iiponin ko?" he quietly asked, his thumb caressing your temple. Normally, men wanted this to be a surprise or didn't talk about this but he only wanted you to have something you'd cherish for the rest of your life. You tilted your head back to look up at him. "Do you want those with the big gems or the smaller and simpler ones?"
You gazed back at your novel, then sat up and closed it, turning to look at him. "Crispin." You took his hands in your own (he tapped it thrice, making a teeny smile creep up your lips). "Hindi ko kailangan ng singsing."
His eyes grew wide, "... Are you sure? You don't want to be formally married?"
You frantically shook your head, "Nooooooo, noooo! That's not what I meant, dummy. I just wanted to tell you that I don't need an expensive ring to be yours." You kissed him. "And to be your wife."
"Pero—"
"Mahal, if we ever do have kids, mahal ang gatas, diaper, at tuition," you childishly told him. "Kung magpapakasal tayo, I don't need a huge proposal or a big wedding. Let's put the funds away for a house and for the future, 'mkay?"
"... But you won't have a ring," he sulked.
Getting an idea, you hopped off the bed and open your cabinet, finding a piece of durable string on one of your shirts. With a strong tug, it came off. You walked back towards your boyfriend, flopping back down then looping it on your left ring finger. You held your hand up to him, "There. I have a ring now, see?"
Crispin had never ever loved anyone as much as he did right now. There was a nagging feeling at the back of his head, though. "... I feel like I've seen this in a movie before, mahal."
"Duuuuh. I got the idea from the Count of Monte Cristo. Mercedes promises herself to Dantes with a string ring! Sorry nalang if copyright infringement ang ginawa ko, hihi." You showed him the book you were reading, the smile not disappearing from your face. Feeling ecstatic, he kissed you passionately right on the spot.
"Ipapangako mo sa akin na magsasama tayo nang walang hanggan?" Crispin whispered against your lips. "Magpakailanman?"
You kissed him, rolling your eyes, "Oo na, Crispin. Corny mo talaga, manong. Such a hopeless romantic, like me!" Another kiss. "I'll stay with you forever and ever and eveeeeeer and grow old with you. We'll get that rest house in the mountains, travel the world together, win the lotto, and do anything we want!" you declared determinedly.
"Promise? Talaga?"
You grinned, wriggling your little finger, "Pinky promise."
He linked his pinky with yours, "Okay. Pinky promise, wifey."
"Okaaaaay, hubby," you quipped, settling down and snuggling into him.
9:24PM, he saw the digital clock display before he pulled the covers over you both, keeping you warm and safe in his arms.
"Bakit pa dumating ang oras na ito?"
"Mahaaaaal, pauwi na ako. Huwag kang mag-alala," you quietly told Crispin over the phone. He was on another investigation, but while their bossing was speaking to Captain Guerrero and Lieutenant Tapia about the case, he used the spare time he had to check up on you.
You had been buying groceries, but knowing you, Crispin had a feeling you had gone to do some other errands.
"Pauwi ka na? Meaning, you're driving home?" He sighed, "And why are you whispering?"
"... Ehehehe," you nervously giggled.
"Anong ehehehehe?" the demigod asked you, suspicious. "Mahal, saan ka na ba talaga?"
"Nasa banko pa ako. Oopsies," you admitted shamelessly. "But I just finished paying the bills. I'm actually walking away from the counter now and—"
You suddenly stopped talking. For a second, the son of the wargod thought that the signal had gone bad.
"Mahal?"
Your voice had gone distant, but it seemed like it was talking to someone else. He strained to hear what you were saying.
"Hey, hey... shhhh, little one, huwag kang umiyak," he heard you say. Your voice seemed so far away. You seemed like you were trying to shush a person. A kid.
"I want my mom!" a child wailed.
"... Langga, come here. At huwag kang masyadong maingay." If it weren't for his heritage as a god, he would have barely been able to hear what you said.
Were you comforting a kid? Awww. He was about to just end the call then text you instead when another much louder and crueler voice could be heard over the phone. No, there wasn't only one voice. There were more.
"Mamatay kayong lahat! Balang araw, hindi na mga tao ang mamumuno sa mundong ito!"
Then there was a sound that was unmistakably a gunshot.
"Nabalitaan ko na wala ka na."
Bang!
His blood went cold. Almost every day he handled firearms in his line of work, so of course he knew what it sounded like. The shrieks and terrified shouts came after the gunshots.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The last thing he heard were more gunshots, then the call ending.
He had never sprinted to Alexandra so fast before, frantically begging her to let him use the Dragon's Gate to teleport to wherever you were, even if it made him physically sick and nauseous.
Crispin didn't give a damn what happened to him, as long as nothing happened to you.
"Hindi ba't sabi mo hindi mo ko iiwan?"
It all happened so fast. One moment he was silently praying to Bathala for your safety while looking for you in the chaos. The next? He was scouring through the overwhelmed emergency room of the nearest hospital, where it was flooded with victims from the mall shooting.
It was a mess, with bleeding patients on the floor as nurses tried to assist. Others were seated on monobloc chairs that had been quickly put on the corridors. There was an overwhelming number of patients taken to the hospital either through ambulances or police cars themselves. It already began to stink of death, and Crispin hated it. His bloodlust as a wargod was creeping up his veins from the stench and his inner fury, but he held it in. He needed to find you first.
Behind him, Alexandra and Basilio were searching for you, too. When he told them what happened, they didn't hesitate to help and be transported to the mall as quick as possible. Captain Guerrero had already dispatched units after hearing what occurred (there was also an alarm that had blared in the station—a bank employee must have pressed an emergency button or something).
Surprisingly, in the midst of the havoc happening inside the hospital, he found himself walking towards the Trauma Bay of the hospital like a magnet. He had no idea where he was going, but he just kept going, and he stopped by a less crowded hallway. If he just went straight forward, he would be entering an operating room.
"Excuse me, coming through! Make some way!" It was a doctor who yelled from behind him. He turned around.
"Hindi papabayaan na ako'y mag-isa."
And as if time went by slower, he found you on a stretcher, being wheeled through the corridor as a nurse was on the bed with you, performing CPR. He saw the amount of blood gushing out of the bullet wounds on your body; one on your back, another on your stomach, and a third on your thigh.
Crispin couldn't help but run after them, asking one of the health professionals what was happening to you, "Nurse! Nurse, is she going to be okay!?"
"Are you her family?" they quickly interrogated. Alexandra and Basilio rounded the corner right as the nurse asked him that. Both held their breaths when they saw the tormenting state you were in, unconscious and on the brink of death.
The eldest demigod frenziedly nodded, "Yes, yes! I'm family!" He glanced at your bleeding form, and his heart clenched seeing the string ring on your finger, a bit of blood splattered over it. "I'm... I'm her husband! Asawa ko siya!"
You weren't formally or legally married yet, but to his eyes (and many of the others who knew you both), you were practically husband and wife.
"Good," the nurse said as they rushed you into the O.R., stopping Crispin from entering any further. "Sir, we need you to tell us your wife's name and her health details, please. She has to be operated on as soon as possible. We need her age, blood type, her comorbidities or allergies, if any..."
Crispin knew them all. He'd memorized them. And he told the nurses everything they needed for the operation. As long as it saved you, he'd say anything. Do anything.
"Hindi ba't sabi mo sabay tayong tatanda?"
It was a grueling operation, he could tell. Crispin had been pacing continuously in the waiting room, not even daring to sit from how anxious he was about you. Hank had come instantly to the hospital after hearing, and now there were three seated and extremely worried people watching him panic outside the operating room.
"God, please let her be okay," he continued to mumble to himself, fiddling with his fingers. "Please, please, please..."
"Kuya, umupo ka muna," Basilio tried to convince his brother.
"Oo nga," Hank frowned.
"You've been standing for five hours," Alexandra gave him a saddened look. "You should rest."
The older demigod shook his head, "I can't, bossing. Hindi pwede. Not until I know that she's okay."
As if on cue, the head surgeon came out of the operating room. Crispin nearly jolted and would have grabbed the man's collar had it not been for Alex and his brother holding him back, calming him down. No one could tell what he was about to say until he removed his surgical mask.
The four occupants waited for his response, antsy. The tension in the room was so thick it could be cut with a knife.
"Doc? Is she okay? Is she gonna be alright?" Crispin asked, troubled out of his mind. Alex's grip on his arm tightened, and so did Basilio's hold on his shoulder. "Doc, please say somethi—"
"... I'm sorry," the surgeon shook his head, a somber look on his face.
It was like the universe stopped for the demigod. The two people holding him were the only ones to support him when his knees buckled.
"We did everything we could. She lost too much blood, and the bullets hit too many vital organs," the doctor explained forlornly. "We performed CPR and a cardiac massage on her for thirty minutes, but she did not make it through the rest of the operation."
The words just echoed emptily through Crispin's ears.
"Bakit bigla ka na lang nandiyan sa kabilang buhay?"
When he entered the morgue alone, he didn't know why but he was expecting you to be sitting up and smiling, almost hearing your teasing voice telling him it was all a cruel prank. At first, that was what he saw. He saw the love of his life, soft skin flushed and curled up lips filled with so much love directed at him. He saw you radiant—glowing; that familiar twinkle in your magnificent eyes. He reached out to hold your left hand, awaiting its warmth.
Awaiting the three taps.
The taps that would tell him "I love you" and "I'm okay".
Crispin even waited a minute. Maybe you were still there, hanging on. Maybe... just maybe... you were fighting.
"Mahal?" he croaked out, squeezing your hand.
"Paano na ang lahat? Paano na ako, tayo?"
Those three taps never came. One minute. Five minutes. Ten minutes.
Only then did he really see you. The illusion all came crashing down.
Now your skin was so cold. So lifeless. So... opposite from what you were when you were alive. You were pale. Your lips were tinted blue. You were so still. So deathly still. Not one movement.
It freaked him out.
He couldn't believe it was you on that metal table—it didn't look like you. Where was the halo he always saw around your head? Where was that beam of light following you around?
His rose-tinted glasses suddenly became grey and dull. Taking your left hand, Crispin felt his heart shatter even more when his hand brushed the string ring on your finger. They had cleaned you up and made sure there was no blood left on your body, but nothing could remove those tiny, miniscule splatters that stained the string.
Remnants of what happened today.
You never did remove it. Even when showering or swimming or washing the dishes, you'd joked to him.
"See? 'Di ko nga kailangan ng singsing. Mas maganda pa nga 'to, eh. I can wear it all the time! Matibay pa!"
Crispin could nearly hear you, but it was all just a memory in his mind. God, he didn't want to forget your voice. Your laughter. Your cries. You whispering to him how much you loved him. He couldn't. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if he did.
Both of you didn't even get to say "I love you" one last time. But reality was harsh, and this wasn't a movie where the leading characters could have a lengthy monologue confessing to each other as the dramatic scene was drawn out from seconds into minutes.
There were no camera angles, no music, no time left, and no happy endings. Everything was raw. Real.
"Hindi ba't sinabi mo sa akin na sabay tayong mangangarap?"
"Mahal," his voice trembled as he held your icy hand to his lips, kissing it. "Huwag mo akong iwan. What about us? Our dreams? Andami pa nating pangarap, 'di ba? Mga gustong gawin?"
No response.
"Tatatanda pa tayo, 'di ba? Bibili pa tayo ng bahay na nasa bundok... then we'll travel the world together, right? We've... We've saved up half of the funds! You... You can't leave now..."
Silence.
Crispin felt tears dripping down his face. He hadn't noticed he was crying. Only with you could he be a sniveling mess—around the others, he always had to be the kuya. The responsible one. The oldest one. The loyal bodyguard.
With you? He could be anything and you would never judge him.
Even when you were dead, he was still a sniveling mess in your arms.
"Sabi mo gusto mong manalo sa lotto," he choked out, cupping your cheeks. It was so strange to him; how colorless they were compared to how... spirited you were in life. "I'll do that... I'll make that happen. Just please... please come back to me. Gagawin ko ang lahat... bumalik ka sa akin, mahal. Mahal..."
Crispin told himself nothing was impossible when a god loved someone, yet now all this god could do was be paralyzed by his despair.
"Bakit bigla kang lumisan nang hindi man lang nagpaalam?"
They say there are five stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. People don't talk enough about how they weren't actually stages. They were just five emotions and there was no particular order they came in. They would come and go, and that was how dealing with loss really was.
Today, as he was cradling his departed soulmate and the only woman he knew he'd ever love this much—reduced to tears while nursing his broken heart—he was feeling denial, bargaining, and depression all at once.
Only then did he allow himself to feel anger—just pure, unadulterated fury—when Alexandra let him and his brother unleash their bloodlust to the guilty aswang clan that had been the culprits of the mall shooting. The bank robbery.
He had his vengeance.
The son of the wargod nearly became a god of war that night, coming home soaked in the same crimson that dripped off his guns. He swore to himself he'd rip the world apart for you and build it back from scratch. Thus, Crispin was merciless to those who murdered you and all those other innocent humans.
He took his time watching the life dissipate out of their eyes, especially since he didn't see yours before you died. They were already closed when he got to the hospital too late.
Denial, anger, bargaining, and depression. He'd felt all that as time passed, on and off.
Acceptance? That last stage? That last emotion? Crispin never did really get to that point. Perhaps he would. Perhaps he wouldn't. Only more time would tell.
"Isang malamig na hangin ang yumakap sa akin."
The demigod sat under the tree that shaded your gravestone, a bouquet of white and red roses beside him while he relaxed on the grass. It was a classic symbol of true and everlasting love. That was the vow you'd made to one another, right?
December 1st.
It had been one year since your death. Wasn't it funny how the fates worked? Two years ago, on this very day, you two promised each other that you'd be together forever. He said that this day would be memorable to him until the day he died because technically, it was your engagement slash informal wedding anniversary.
Then one year ago, you had been shot trying to protect a child from those armed aswang. You saved the kid, alright. Crispin even made sure that the little boy, one of the lucky survivors of the shooting, wouldn't be targeted by the aswang. He ensured your sacrifice wouldn't be in vain. But what was supposed to be a marriage anniversary turned into your death anniversary.
December 1st.
The day would indeed be eternally ingrained into his mind.
But now, he could only dwell on nostalgia as he crouched and cleaned your gravestone, polishing it after removing all the grass and dirt. Engraved on it were the words beloved friend, sister, and wife.
Wife.
He really should have married you before you were declared dead. It didn't matter now; you would always be his wife, even in death.
On the left side of your gravestone was his mother's tombstone. He did the same, cleaning it and polishing it. When he was done, he tapped your gravestone thrice, "Una na ako, mahal. Paalam din, Ma. Baka hanapin pa ako ni bossing."
Tap. Tap. Tap.
He jerked, swerving around and standing up. He swore someone just touched his shoulder and—
Whoosh!
"Parang isang pahiwatig na magpapaalam ka na."
A gentle breeze came from behind him, where the tree was. Once more, he turned around.
Crispin didn't know what to do.
He thought he was dreaming, but he wasn't. He knew he wasn't. Not with the way your hand rested on his cheek. Not with how warm you felt.
Despite seeming almost transparent, you looked absolutely radiant, more so than when you were in life. If he was biased before about you having a halo and a beam of light following you around, now he wasn't (because you really did have a golden circle on your head and a candescent glow behind you).
You didn't speak, but again, you tapped your index finger thrice on his cheek. He was too stunned to react to the featherlight touch you had. It was almost nothing, but it was there. A ghostly tap, tap, tap.
"... Mahal?" he whispered.
You joyfully beamed at him (God, did you look divine), then planted a fragile kiss on his lips. You settled down on the roots of the tree and patted the patch of grass beside it. He sat down slowly. When he did, he removed his black gloves while you intertwined your hand with his.
On his left ring finger was a string ring made from that old shirt of yours. The same one you improvised your string ring from. It was how Crispin always remembered you and how he brought your memory everywhere with him.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
The triple tapping. Perhaps it was your way of wordlessly saying you loved him while simultaneously bidding him goodbye as a ghost. He didn't know. You couldn't speak (or he couldn't hear you), so you did what you could.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Just that gesture every once in a while as you quietly listened to him tell you about his day.
When he had to leave, he saw you there by the tree, sitting and waving at him. The next time he came to visit, you were there. Always there, waiting.
And when you weren't, after a couple of decades, Crispin knew that it was time for him to let you go.
To let himself move on.
But that didn't mean he stopped hurting or stopped loving you. He could never stop loving you. Never.
Kahit kailangan ka niyang bitawan upang makapagpatuloy ka sa kabilang buhay, habangbuhay kang minahal ng isang diyos ng digmaan.

× AUTHOR'S NOTE ×
Nasa mood kasi akong manakit ng tao (because ngayon ko lang pinanood ang mga pelikula ni Rico Yan & Claudine Barretto after his death; ang pait eh, right person but wrong time). Medyo sadista pala ako, haha. Ayun, pati ako umiiyak habang nagsusulat nito. Even when I was showering, I was still crying and blowing my nose out. Sana nagustuhan niyo kasi pati author niyo nasaktan sa ginawa niya. 🥲😅
And that tapping gesture was inspired by a random Reddit post I saw years ago. As someone whose love language ain't saying stuff out loud, that just really called out to me. Acts of service kasi akin, eh.
Anyways, I finished writing this at like, 12AM. I'll just edit the typos and errors tomorrow because I want to get this oneshot off my chest. Goodnight! 😂💤
Comments and constructive criticism are welcome! Likes and reblogs are very much appreciated, too! (Yes, you may also rant at me for this.) 💙

Today is your first anniversary and you don't need to be a genius to know that Javi has forgotten. He has too much to worry about in his job and you're not going to blame him; you have bought yourself a present from him. A black set of lingerie with transparencies that leave a little to the imagination. After decorating the living room with some fruity scented candles and putting on his favorite red lipstick, you wear his DEA's t-shirt —the one he hates the most but you don't understand why he keeps it.
At least he's on time when dinner is ready.
Carrying his jacket in his hand, he walks in closing the door behind his back, frowning as soon as he notices the piece of clothing covering your body. Wrinkling his nose disgusted and upping a side of his mustache, he shakes his head.
“Quítate eso”. He simply demands, crossing both arms on his chest.
(Take that off).
“¿Por qué? A mí me gusta…”
(Why? I like this one).
“Porque tú eres mía, no de la DEA”.
(Because you're mine, not DEA's).
You shrug your shoulder raising the gems of the t-shirt to remove it over your head and let it hang from your index finger for a second, until letting it fall to the floor. Just like Javi's jaw dropping and his jacket slipping off. Then, he notices the candles, the smell… But his eyes can't fly away from your body, licking slowly his bottom lip. Horny, but starting to panic.
“¿Qué estamos cel— fuck”.
(What are we celebra— fuck).
Javi starts to babble nonsense, trying to excuse himself, trying to apologize, trying to say something. Until you shut him up with a soft move of your left hand. He looks at you like a beaten puppy, taking a couple of steps closer with his hands kept in the back pocket of his jeans, finding some calm when he sees you smirking provocatively.
“¿Te gusta lo que mi novio me ha comprado, ah?” You say turning around with both arms raised at the sides of your torso, so he can have a better view.
(Do you like what my boyfriend has bought me?)
“Tiene buen gusto, sí”. He whispers fascinated, having to clear his throat seeing you more closer.
(Has good taste, yeah).
Embracing you against himself, you cup his cheeks onto your palms leaning on your tiptoes to peck his lips with so much tender, calmly, with no rush. His hands land on your ass, not losing time on squeezing it while grunting very pleased when you urge him to walk backward to the sofa. His fingers don't loose the grip on your skin whilst taking a seat, reclining against it and getting comfier. You slide down through your shoulders the strips of the bralette before taking it off and throwing it somewhere.
Javi can't stop looking at you, enraptured by any move you make, heavily gulping a knot of saliva when you kneel between his legs without being asked for. You have been craving him all day since you woke up alone much to your regret, but now, he's all yours. And you're going to take advantage. Your fingers are quick undoing his belt, the metallic button and the zip, gasping inevitably when he arches his back to help you, and his hard dick springs free as soon as his clothes roll down to his ankles.
Wrapping your hand around his length, you take an ephemeral lick from his glans, tasting the salty precum covering it. Usually, you like to play with him, and Javier loves to play with you, but Steve has called you again to tell you it hasn't been a good day either. You're already used. You know pretty well how to take care of Javi. And this time, you don't tease him, swallowing his most sensible skin until your mouth is completely filled, pushing the limits of your throat. Your boyfriend can't help but loudly moan, closing his eyes as he places his hands on the back of his neck. Until he's forced to tangle them in your head when the gag you produce makes his cock vibrate deliciously.
“Oh, fuck, cariño”. He growls tossing his head back, spreading his legs a little more, not being able to speak in Spanish as his mind is focused only on your touches.
You bob your mouth up and down, circling it around his most sensitive skin, as your tongue licks all his size as if it's the succulent food you have ever tried. You mark the rhythm, sometimes quicker when he's relaxed, sometimes slowlier when he's eager. And yes, you could kill him just like that —sucking off his soul and squeezing his balls when you force your throat and offer him another gag.
His vocals soon become louder, conscious that Javi is so close to cum, watching him maintain your gaze with his darkened lustful eyes and biting his lips, trying to control himself. Trying to last a few minutes more.
“Fuck, basta…” He begs pulling your hair back when he's at the edge.
(Fuck, enough).
Your boyfriend helps you to stand up, to push you onto his lap. He needs more. He always needs more from you. Pretending to take off the only piece of clothing that covers his favorite part of your body, Javier stops you.
“Déjalo”. He just says.
(Leave it).
Putting it aside, he tours your soaked entry with his fingertips. Your arousal wet his digits, bringing them to his mouth to taste you. He loses his ass for you —sucking them clean before colliding his lips with yours. Now, the two of you can taste your juices mixed in your saliva. The filthy kiss that is broken when, directing his glans to your cunt, you just simply let yourself fall over it, digging his hardness deeper than you two could expect.
You grip the back of his head while Javier nails his hands in your hips. He urges you, forces you to rock them, to bounce on his cock. You're desperate for feeling him, dancing your body keened, anxious at the moment his teeth and his lips meet your nipples. Kissing, biting, sucking, pulling them. He tortures you with a sweet pain that makes you roll your eyes to the back of your head.
Increasing the pace as you arch your torso, you find a new weak spot, hitting your g-spot with every bounce. Javi feels it too, he can feel the same pleasure reclining against the sofa and enjoying the view of your breast jumping every time you impale yourself with his cock. He could die right now happier and satisfied than ever in his life, with the addition of the soft fabric of your panties rubbing his length in every move.
“Fuck, I'm gonna cum, baby”. He gasps with a very marked Texas accent, closing his eyelids.
“Yeah?” You mumble leaning forward and placing your hands on his shoulders to press your lips on his. “C'mon… cum inside me, mi flaco”.
The pounds to your soaked pussy are insane, just like the kiss he gives you —hungry of your mouth, obscene, dirty. Javier doesn't need anything else to explode, drinking and swallowing the animal grunt that escapes his throat, as he forces you down to push his dick to your guts making you find your orgasm too.
You both are breathless, but that doesn't stop you from fighting his tongue with yours as the pleasure continues shaking your bodies.
“Feliz aniversario”. Panting, he brushes your lips with his, wrapping his arms on your middle back to hold you closer. “Lo siento que me olvidé…”
(Happy anniversary. I'm sorry I forgot it).
“Está bien…” You whisper spreading sloppy and exhausted kisses all around his face. “No estoy enfadada”.
(It's okay. I'm not mad at you).
“Te voy a compensar, lo prometo, mi amor”.
(I'll compensate you, I promise, my love).

“Francisco,” she’s swaying back and forth with a sleeping Luna in her arms and he can hear the pleading in her voice, “please don’t do this.”
He waited until the absolute last second to tell her but she knew as soon as she got his text—
Pope’s here. I’m gonna bring him by tomorrow to meet Luna, okay?
“Baby,” he catches her hip and pulls her into him, “it’s just a couple of days, consulting work. I’ll be back before you know it.”
“No,” she’s shaking her head, tears threatening to spill over, “you promised me. You looked me in the eye and you said, Leah, I’m done with this shit. Why are you going?”
He licks his lips and looks to Santi in the hallway, pretending to be lost in his phone. He knows he’s not.
“I’ll call you when we get to Colombia. I’ll call you every night and again when I’m on the plane home. Te prometo, ay?”
“Stop making promises,” she pulls away from him, hand on his chest to steady her shaking body, “we’ve established you don’t keep them.”
His hands find her shoulders and squeeze, “Baby, it’s almost twenty grand. We can pay off the car or,” he stammers, “your student loans. We can breathe.”
Frankie sees the words trying to formulate in front of him, the cogs of her mind turning behind her eyes. He’s bracing himself for what’s next but all she does is pull away, the only acknowledgement of the fact that she can’t stop him.
She turns on her heel and he watches her walk out the room, stopping as Santi picks up where Frankie left off.
“Stop being so harsh on him, he needs this. Your family needs this.”
Frankie takes in a breath as Leah’s free hand collides with Santi’s cheek and before he can even react, she’s rounding on him again.
“Don't you dare tell me what my family needs, Santiago Garcia. I love you because he loves you but you are nothing but trouble.”
She can feel Frankie coming up behind her, shifting the air again because he’s nothing but nerves but Santi’s too hot to notice.
“He'll be fine, Leah, you worry too goddamn much,” he wants to shout, that’s evident in his demeanor. "He’s a big boy, if he didn’t want to go, he’d tell me.”
“Baby,” Frankie’s hand wraps around her elbow, trying to gently coax her into his arms. He wants to lead her back to the bedroom. Hold her. Convince her.
“No,” she pulls away, eyes still hard on Pope, “the best case scenario is that he comes home alive, Santiago. But he’s not fine. And who’s here picking up the pieces? It’s not you.”
“Leah, I swear. It's just a consultation,” his jaw sets with the lie he fed the rest of them, like his body is finally rebelling to the bullshit but he continues on, “your husband will come home.”
Frankie’s still got one hand wrapped around her elbow, another on her back. Her anger is a hurricane, he can feel it churning deep inside as her voice comes out lower, “He better or—“
“Or what?” Santiago's face splits into a shit eating grin, “you'll try to kill me again? How is your sister by the way?”
“I won’t kill you, Santi, but I will put a bullet through the bad knee and I’ll make sure William gets me the good shit. The kind that shreds through tendon and bone like a blender.”
Nodding, Santi sucks the air through his teeth, “You can try but I honestly think you’re too chicken shi—“
“¡Basta!” Enough!
Frankie’s pulling on Leah again, the hand that was resting on the small of her back making its way to Luna now. Luna, who up until her father’s raised voice—the voice he never wanted her to know—was sleeping perfectly against her mother. Completely, blissfully unaware of the firefight happening around her.
“Pope,” his voice is shaking, “you need to go.”
“Fine,” he pulls his phone back up to his face. “I’ll pick you up for the airport tomorrow.”
“No,” he feels the hope emanating from Leah as he watches Santi’s face fall, “if I come, I’ll meet you there but this isn’t a conversation you’re involved in anymore.”
“Wha—what the fuck does that mean? I started the conversation.”
Leah pads back into the bedroom, heart aching, with Luna in her arms. Frankie watches as she closes the door and rounds on Santiago, slamming his back into the wall behind him with enough force to shake the house and when he speaks again, it’s measured and even. This is the calmest he has been in weeks.
It’s not a threat.
“If you ever speak to my wife like that again, she’s not the one you have to worry about putting a bullet into your body.”
It’s a promise. —————
Fish is most talented pilot I know—
He swings his assault rifle back, opting for the Glock 19 at his side, Santi’s words ringing through his ears.
—and he’s grounded on a bullshit coke rap.
His boots fall heavy through the mansion, he doesn’t give a shit about stealth. Threw every care in the world out the door the moment Tom started digging for more. What they had was more than enough but he could never just have enough. Had to push for more. Every fucking time.
Another lap. Another sweep. Another round.
But he never missed a hard out, Benny was right about that.
Bullshit coke rap. Every misstep Frankie made, every struggle he faced, was just a bullshit mark on a hardened warrior. That’s all they ever saw him as, Tom and Santi. All remorse drained from his soul in the name of God and country.
Frankie squeezes the trigger, eyes lighting up in the muzzle flash. If he was going to take their lives, he was going to see it drain from their faces.
If he was inflicting this horror on his mind again, making Leah puzzle his shit back together again, he was going to earn it.
The gun hangs heavy in his hand as he steps over the bound and gagged body, following the sound of the rain.
"Fish, where are you?” Tom’s voice scratches at the edge of his skull. His nickname is a stark reminder that there is a separation between man and monster and he can find it again.
He’s shaking as he reaches for the button on his collar, “I'm exiting back out to the courtyard.”
She was right, telling him to stop making promises. He said no live fire and he couldn’t even keep that to himself. —————
“Is he right?” She’s quiet as Frankie lifts their daughter from her aching arms, “Is this what you need?”
“Yeah,” it comes out quiet, leveling up to the bouncing he’s now taken over to keep the baby asleep, “I think it is.”
“Why?” It’s not accusatory, she genuinely wants to know.
“I—“ he stops to think, he doesn’t want his words to come out selfish but he knows that’s how they’ll land. “Baby, I know I brought all of this down on myself and I know that I’ve survived it once before but…”
He trails off, his large hand is splayed across Luna’s back to support her as he resettles her in his arms. A small sound of contentedness escapes her and he can’t believe he’s missed this for the last six weeks. Spent months on end higher than any fucking plane he flew just because he was afraid of failing her. He chokes on the lump building in his throat because he already has.
“But what, baby?”
“I fucked up,” he takes a deep breath to steady himself, “this has been the hardest year of my life, the last six weeks especially.”
Bad landing.
She takes a breath, a tiny spark in her eyes but he’s already in front of her, “Mi alma, let me finish. Please.”
She nods, agreeing to his appeal.
"Before, the only thing I had to lose was my license. Now, the license was just the tip of the pyramid. This shit could’ve cost me my life. In more ways than one. I know what they cut the drugs with now and my nightmares are no longer about what I did in the service, Leah. Will and Benny hold me down screaming in the middle of the night as I imagine I’ve left this shit out for you or Luna to find.”
He laughs at the love and concern in her eyes, not feeling he deserves it but he forges on anyway, “I snorted our finances into desolation. We can’t live on a teacher’s salary alone, baby, you know that. How far behind is the car payment?”
“Just a month now,” she whispers, “my sisters helped us catch up.”
“And you hate that! You’re too prideful to ask for help, too full of protection for me. This will set us back on the right track.”
She’s standing now, arms crossed to anchor her own sobs from escaping, “Frankie, we can survive until your drug test—“
“No,” he’s shaking his head, “it’s still another six weeks away.”
“You don’t have to do this, baby, I know you don’t want to.”
"I cannot let you struggle like this,” he’s shifting Luna again, her tiny fists balled into his shirt and he is devastated with his love for her, “I am supposed to provide for and protect this family. It was in my vows and I broke those.”
“For richer or poorer was also in the fucking vows, Francisco.”
He swallows hard, reaching out and pulling her into him. He can’t bear to see her face when he speaks again, his voice low with the confidence of a settled mind.
“I am going to Colombia." —————
He feels the stone falling from beneath him as he loses the mule to the mountainside, last in line of the five.
He should’ve done more. Held on tighter, walked faster. But as Santiago saw an animal and Tom saw money, he could only see himself falling over.
He lost count of the days he hadn’t called. Two? Three? Hadn’t heard her voice or the baby’s babbling as she responds to daddy. He saw himself at the bottom of that mountain. Never enunciating each syllable of Pa-pa for his little girl ever again, convincing himself that he would be her first word. Never pulling Leah into his arms, the scent of coconut and vanilla so profoundly intoxicating that all he could think about was sinking deep into her. All the comfort and clarity the world had to offer found in her arms and between her legs.
She insisted on the nicest sheets they could find and instead of falling into them, he only felt jagged rock at his back.

One of the most magical things about Inkheart is that it’s a really good book that was made into a bad movie that was made into a really good book. Look at this.
Tumblr media
A well-meaning adult gifted me this book when was like 12 and I 100% expected it to suck since I really didn’t like the movie. But look:
Every main character gets a beautiful double-page spread packed with information that relates to that character’s skillset or personality.
Tumblr media
On Mo’s page we can learn about book binding and get a guide on how to read characters out of books.
Tumblr media
Meggie’s page features a quiz about her favorite books and tips for pressing poppies - a detail I absolutely love. In Inkheart, Meggie says Poppies are great flowers to press which is honestly just... not true lmao. It’s really hard to do it without having the flower fall apart. So the fact that they included a guide here tells me that whoever made this book really cared and knew what they were doing. (Also, the title of these pages in the top left there is ‘Daughter without Mother’ and that always makes me really sad).
Tumblr media
The page about the bus and their travels to and through Italy, complete with fun facts about the country and a little map you can push the bus back and forth on (this marks the way from Elinor’s house to Capricorn’s village).
Elinor’s page is, of course, all about books and their history but it also mentions plenty about illumination, paints and how they used to be made back in the day. Strangely prophetic.
Dustfinger’s page is mainly about fire-eating or whatever, I don’t care because there’s also-
Tumblr media
pettable Gwin!
But seriously, it’s a cool page. I like how they include a whole bunch of scientific fire facts because there is no way in hell Dustfinger himself knows any of this.
Tumblr media
I don’t have much to say about this page, I just think the pop-up thing looks sick as hell and I wanted to show you.
Tumblr media
The book also goes into a bit more detail about the movie with some behind the scenes pictures and info on Cornelia’s involvement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most interesting to me on these pages is this little storyboard thing in which Dustfinger looks like a strange elf. I would love to see more of it.
Tumblr media
There’s such an insane amount of detail in here, it feels like they took a bunch of crumbs from the source material and used them as an excuse to expand on a whole bunch of interesting topics - society and common jobs in the middle ages, secret codes and how to use them, bookplates (? I think that’s the english word for Exlibris?), common Italian plants... It’s all really interactive and fun.
I also like how many little extras they included. There’s the first chapter of Inkheart as well as a tiny little CD with a few chapters of the Inkspell audiobook, a bunch of bookplates to use in other books and most importantly-
Tumblr media
Basta’s knife.
10/10 book.

A writing prompt could be that one scene I mentioned? Y’know the one where Ajay texts Diego after he started questioning if Vaas loves Ajay or not 👀
thanks for the prompt! i'm posting this on ao3 too, hehe <3
word count: 945 ;P
just some sweet ajaas and bhadiego fluff for the fc3!diego au!
basta ya
Another one of those days, Diego presumes.
He’s grown used to the usual ramblings that Vaas has been having about he and Bhadra’s usual couplings, but Diego was sure it was just about his dislike for girls in general up until he watched as Ajay’s hand was swatted like a cat in response to his attempts to touch Vaas.
“Ow.” Ajay waved his hand off, still looking at him with a small smile on his face. Vaas did that thing, the scrunch in his eyebrows as he scoffed and looked away.
“Go away, motherfucker.” He grumbled.
“Love you.” Ajay teased, laughing as Vaas hit him in the shoulder.
He felt Bhadra’s smaller hands reach out to his own, and she leaned forward, whispering softly.
“Is it me, or does Vaas seem to not like Ajay?”
Diego took one look at them, then back at her. “It’s definitely not just you.”
--
Their living room was big, stretching from across, and the couch was comfortable and spacious enough for them to keep cuddling. Bhadra, drowning in Diego’s much bigger hoodie, had her arms around him as he kept his face buried on her shoulder.
“I like you.” Bhadra muttered into his ear, hugging him closer.
“You can do better than that,” Diego whispered, kissing her jaw teasingly.
Bhadra rolled her eyes, “Hm. I love you. Is that better?”
Diego grinned, tilting his head upwards. “Much better.”
They heard the door swing open from behind, and as Vaas’s footsteps were heard, followed by Ajay’s chiming voice, Bhadra put a finger to her lips as they both listened in on their conversation.
“I’m not fucking around, Ajay--”
“-- I know--”
“And that’s what makes you SUCK!” Vaas cut him off. Diego’s eyes widened at the tiny remark of an “ow!” and Bhadra’s snicker was soft as they heard a “You bit me.”
With the head of the couch as their only barrier from seeing, the rest was off to their imaginations as Bhadra leaned her head backwards on the couch. It was silent for a few moments, then afterwards Diego had tilted his head upwards when he heard a “Come on, let’s get the fuck out of here.”
Over at the park, they sat down with snacks in hand and a readiness to scout for Vaas and Ajay, who were sitting on a bench together and having a chat.
Trying to stealthily observe a veteran soldier and a warrior was hard. They were trained to be able to detect even the slightest movements, and it’s evident how because Diego had to whip his head away as soon as Ajay had looked at them both.
“You’re making it obvious.” Bhadra whispered.
“Try overhearing them from afar!” Diego replied.
“I’m reading their lips.”
Diego quirked a brow. “And you know what they’re saying?”
“They’re talking about hunting something together,” Bhadra said, making a quick glance at them once more, which only found them both in confusion as Vaas suddenly stormed off, leaving Ajay to laugh to himself as he seemed to wait on him to come back.
Then he saw them both. Diego flinched, Bhadra looked away immediately.
“You two can hang out here if you want. He’ll be back soon.” Ajay waved his hand, gesturing in a “come hither” motion as Bhadra gave him a smile. So they did.
As Ajay moved to let them sit down together, he simply looked at them and said, “You guys wanna join our hunting?”
“H-how did you--” Diego sputtered.
“Just a hunch,” Ajay hummed playfully, “Or did Bhadra not tell you who taught her about lip reading?”
Bhadra grinned sheepishly, looking away quickly as Diego gave her a light glare.
“Maybe we should talk to him about that.” Bhadra thinks, placing her hand on her chin in a thinking position. Diego wraps his arms around her from behind and keeps his head rested on hers.
“How do we tell him that? Is “hey, you should break up with my brother” any good?” Diego remarked.
Bhadra scoffed, “No. I’ll do the talking, if you like.”
“You like my directness.” Diego said, lowering himself down to her eye level.
Bhadra rolled her eyes, “Maybe I do.”
“I’m going to miss you if you stop coming when he does.” Diego joked,, kissing Bhadra on the cheek.
“We’re not siblings!” Bhadra chided.
Upon seeing movement from the other window, Diego and Bhadra made a look outside to find Ajay and Vaas having a hug. And then as soon as they were done, Vaas gently pushed him away. With the light in the way, they couldn’t see a thing for what they were saying at all.
“Huh.” Bhadra commented. “Weird.”
“Very weird.” Diego replied.
“We have to talk to Ajay soon.”
Diego: hey ajay
Diego: can we hang out in the room? we want to talk
Ajay: Oh? Sure.
Ajay: You can come in, by the way, Vaas is just asleep.
They quietly peeked into the room as Diego tucked his phone in.
Much to their surprise, Vaas had his shirt off, cuddling as closely as he could on top of Ajay, arms and legs clinging around him as Ajay had his phone in his hand and the other around his waist. As they made their way inside, Diego heard his brother mutter soft words into Ajay’s neck.
He couldn’t make out much, but his ears caught a soft “te amo” and Diego could do nothing but smile.
As it turns out, they were wrong about Vaas: he does like, no, love, Ajay.
Ajay: Did you want to say something?
Diego: nevermind
Diego: we just wanted to see you guys, hehe

Queen of Hearts pt 11
A/N: sorry it took so long. my world crumbled and well...it’s been a hard ass pandemic.
--
“So, this is how mobsters live…”
Aubrey flicked her gaze over the interior of the entry way, noting the mix of Corinthian columns and Romanesque sculpture with a splash of modern 80s interior decoration. It was a little over the top and gaudy but her Aunt Rosemarie thought it was the height of tasteful and luxurious décor. It wasn’t how Aubrey would ever decorate but if she were being honest with herself, she kind of liked it. It was familiar and comforting.
Aubrey ran a hand down a heavy marble column and chuckled. “Only the ones with style.”
Stacie’s laugh was sweet and light and soothed the nerves she didn’t even know she had. Aubrey took her fiancée’s hand and gave it a squeeze. Once they crossed the threshold into the living room there would be no turning back. Once you were in the family, you were IN the family, and no one leaves the family. Almost as if sensing what she was about to say, Stacie turned to bring their foreheads together, her smile wide and warm and just for Aubrey.
“You and me, right Bree?”
The blonde matched Stacie’s smile and nodded. “You and me.”
“And me. Don’t forget about me. Which I think you do forget about me because you never call me. You don’t write. No one knows nothing until you text that you’re bringing over the love of your life. You must be love of her life by the way. Hi. I’m Jesse, the smarter, more attractive, and talented, not to mention younger, cousin. Sorry dollface, you got stuck with this sad sack instead. It’s not too late to change your mind though. Just saying.”
A laugh bubbled out of her and Aubrey turned her head to face the annoyingly eager figure hovering just over her shoulder. His giddy smile was ridiculous and she knew she might have to threaten to shoot him to get him to stop being…well himself. Jesse put an arm around each of them, pushing himself further into their personal space and if he were someone other than family Aubrey would definitely shoot him.
“You’re really annoying.”
“Your face is really anno….” It was all the taunt he managed to get out before a black lace folding fan smacked noisily off the back of his head. Aubrey chuckled as Jesse winced and reached up to rub his head. “Ma! It’s said in love!”
“Basta! Get out! Go…”
Jesse wasn’t the biggest guy in the world but he still almost a foot taller than the woman he was cowering away from. Her severe dark brows rose as she hissed out a warning when he didn’t move fast enough down the hall. She watched until she was sure Jesse was actually going before turning to Aubrey, her hard stare going soft as she took in the blonde and pulled her into a tight hug.
“You don’t call except for business; I never see you anymore. Who’s feeding you? You’re wasting away!” Aubrey bore the clucking and poking and prodding because arguing with her Aunt Rosie was like trying to fist fight the tide. She might be a big boss at the table but she was still and would always be Rosie’s little duckling. The small woman finally stopped her scolding tirade turned to take in Stacie in one long look from feet to face. “And who is this?”
“Zia Rosie, this is my girl. Stacie…this is my Aunt Rosemarie.”
“It’s really nice to meet you.” If Stacie was nervous meeting Aubrey’s aunt, she didn’t show it, which was smart. Any hint of fear shown now would last forever in Rosie’s mind. She might never mention it but it would be a mark against Stacie that would never go away in her aunt’s eyes. “Your cooking has been all Bree can talk about.”
“Hmmm.” Rosemarie tapped her hand fan lightly against her palm as she considered the brunette towering over her. “You cook? You don’t look like you eat much.”
Aubrey held her breath, unwilling to break into tension of the moment. On the surface it seemed like such a simple if slightly rude question but it wasn’t. Acceptance in the family only came through Rosemarie. If she didn’t like you, no one would trust you. No one.
“Not as well as I’d like to. Yet. But I’m getting there.”
“No one taught you? You have no mother?” The idea of a grown woman not being able to cook wounded something in Rosie’s spirit and Aubrey could feel the smaller woman gather herself to her full tiny tower of 4 feet, 11 inches of righteous indignation. “Who feeds you??”
“My mother is more proficient at ordering food rather than making it.” Stacie’s smile didn’t slip but somehow dimmed in its intensity making the air around them seem somehow heavier. “To be honest with you I didn’t realize how important cooking for your family was until I had one to feed. I could definitely improve…and I will. For my family.”
Rosie gave a slight nod and slid her arm through Stacie’s completely shutting Aubrey out of the conversation. Her aunt gave Stacie one more intense gaze, reading all her flaws and weighing them against whatever ideal she saw in her head.
“You like gnocchi?”
“I love gnocchi.”
“Good. Tomorrow we make. Come early.” Aubrey felt a huge weight slide off her shoulders as she watched her aunt give Stacie’s arm a squeeze. The small woman disengaged their linked arms and whirled on Aubrey with a sharp smack of her fan to the blonde’s shoulder. “And you! You wait so long to bring a good girl home, what’s wrong with you??”
“Sorry Zia…took me awhile to find her.” Stacie gave her a wink over her aunt’s head and Aubrey could feel herself smile in response, almost forgetting her aunt was standing between them. “But I promise I’m not going to let her go now that I have her.”
“Hm, finally something smart. Go…today you work. Tomorrow we eat, hm?”
Aubrey gave an obedient nod of her head and smiled when she was pulled into the softness of her aunt’s chest for a strong rose water scented hug. It reminded her of her childhood and her aunt comforting her through the upheaval of her mother leaving and her father going to prison. It had been a lonely five years for Aubrey but Zia Rosie had always been there waiting, just as ready and eager to give hugs as she did swats of her fan.
Her aunt pulled back and gave her a gentle shove towards the dining room to send them on their way. “Vai mia piccola anatroccolo.”
Aubrey glanced back from the doorway to the dinning room at her aunt still standing there watching her with a soft smile. Her own mother had left her but Aubrey had never lacked the love and caring a mother gave a child. She’d had Zia Rosie to hold her and comfort her through all her childhood hurts and fears, to teach her to cook, and raise a family, to grow from a girl to a woman. No, she hadn’t had the woman that gave birth to her in her life, but she wasn’t without a mother. Rosie turned away toward the kitchen and Aubrey squared her shoulders as she faced the dining room.
She could feel the slight current of nervousness energy from Stacie and gave her a reassuring smile and a wink before leading her into the big room filled with old men with loud voices. There was a chorus of greetings and a few claps from her suit clad uncles sitting around the table. A few of her cousins smirked and teased playfully about being whipped into bringing her girlfriend to the table which Stacie chuckled through. But one man was quiet, his arms folded over his chest, his dark suit pressed perfectly with sharp lines. Franco raised one hand and the boisterous greetings tapered away to silence.
“Hey Uncle Frank.”
He stood slowly from the head of the table and opened his arms. Aubrey didn’t hesitate, she let go of Stacie’s hand so she could go to her uncle and sink into his embrace. He was in his seventies now but the arms enfolding her had the same strength and warmth they had when she was a child. He kissed her head tenderly and held her out at arm’s length to look at her fully.
“Look at you hm? California is good for you; you have a tan and a smile. Who is this bella you bring? Are you why my girl here looks so happy?”
Stacie gave a soft chuckle, her eyes all for Aubrey. “I certainly hope so.”
“Uncle Frank this is Stacie. My fiancée.”
He gave her an approving nod and gathered Stacie in for a tight welcoming hug, kissing her on each cheek before placing her hand back in Aubrey’s. It was enough for him to know that Aubrey was happy and his acceptance was unconditional.
“Jesse…bring an extra chair for Bella.”
“It took me six years to earn a chair and she gets one on the first day? Wow Pops.”
Paolo, her cousin swatted Jesse in the back of head making all of them laugh. Her Uncle Pete leaned back in his chair and shrugged. “Hey kid, if you had looked like her, you’d have been in on the first day too.”
Jesse held out his hands in mock offense. “Whoa….hey not for nothing but I AM the only one in this family with the looks, okay? Look at this face. It’s gorgeous. This suit? This suit cost more than your third wedding.”
They all laughed at that as he set the chair next to Aubrey’s at Franco’s right hand and settled Stacie into it. Aubrey gave him a nod of thanks and slid into her seat with ease. She had missed this, being around her family, The Family. Not all of her uncles and cousins were related by shared blood, some of them were bound by the blood they had spilled. Sometimes that was as strong if not stronger than sharing similar DNA.
Stacie gave Jesse a mild smirk and tossed her dark hair over her shoulder so she could take in all of blonde woman at her side. “And for all that you still don’t look as good as Aubrey.”
Her uncles crowed with delight, teasing their sons and nephews with the statement until Uncle Frank cleared his throat and patted the tabletop to get everyone’s attention. He wasn’t a loud man and he didn’t have to be. A respectful silence fell heavily over the table.
“Now we’re all here, we’ve had some laughs, now we get to business, yes?” He gestured to Jesse and settled into his chair while a box was passed around the table. Each of them divesting themselves of their phones before the meeting started. Franco waited for his son to get back from locking the box away in the office before he started speaking to the group. “We all know why we’re here at this emergency meeting. When the Feds start looking at one of us their looking at us all.”
No one said anything but all their attention had gone to Aubrey. She was the reason they were having to close ranks and the weight of their judgement was resting heavily on her shoulders. Her fingers drummed on the table for a moment before she spoke.
“They’ve got nothing. Everything looks legit, runs legit, and is legit as far as the books go.” She ran her business carefully, making sure that she paid her taxes, and kept all the right paperwork to back herself up. The problem wasn’t how she managed the businesses she used as fronts for other lines of work. The problem was she’d gotten sloppy with something personal and that wedge was just enough opening to look deeper at her and anyone that did business with her. “But they do have pictures of me getting on to a boat that was later found on fire with its owner dead.”
“Jesus, kid…”
There were grumbles and a few headshakes but no one dared to confront her directly about it. One of her uncles leaned forward to rest his elbows on the table. His deep voice was slow as he weighed all of his words carefully.
“This have anything to do with what you did to Nicky?”
Aubrey let her eyes reflect the cold empty place inside of her that felt nothing for the people she had to hurt. Guilt could eat you whole if you let it and she wasn’t going to feel guilty about other people making bad choices.
“Nicky was into bad shit that was going to get us all noticed. I did you a favor.”
“Nicky was a good earner! You took away nearly 25 percent of my bottom line when you had your little tantrum.”
Stacie was listening intently to every word and if she was surprised at any of it, she was careful not to let it show on her face. Aubrey’s fist tightened at the word tantrum and Stacie’s hand covered hers with a squeeze, letting her know she had something to say. Aubrey’s gaze flicked to her and she nodded for Stacie to speak her mind.
“The main benefit of having your pal Nicky around wasn’t the money he brought from the women he supplied to rich influential men. It was the leverage he bought with his knowledge of his client base. And while that leverage was a powerful tool it only got you to gate of the manor, it could never get you inside. You can only push the buttons you know about.”
Franco laced his fingers together and leaned back slightly in his chair. The sharpness of his gaze measuring Stacie with vivid intensity. “I’m listening.”
Stacie pressed on at his slight nod. “I was born into politics, you could pay off a dozen interns in twice as many offices and you’ll still never have as much control as you would if you knew their secrets, their agendas, their entire family history. I know what these people are and how they think because I am one of them.”
“And so that fixes the little problem Big Mike has with Nicky. You want bigger prey, get a better hunter. Bene. Now what do we do about these Feds?” Her uncle, the one that earned some of his money from Nicky, grunted and nodded still unhappy with the situation but unwilling to go against Franco once he’d made up his mind about something. As far as Nicky the pimp was concerned that was just a loose end that got tied up. “Who is running this investigation?”
Aubrey gave a soft huff. “Alice Esposito.”
Franco gave her a disappointed shake of his head and Aubrey felt her cheeks flame. “Her?”
She could feel the tremor of a laugh being tightly held in by Stacie and threw her hand up in frustration. “I know! She just showed up again like a bad penny.” Aubrey was acutely aware of the fact that it was her actions that had made Alice so hellbent on taking her down. “My guy says she’s running loose with this. But I don’t have my own source in the Bureau to confirm that.”
“Quincy, talk to our man in Virginia. I want to know everything on Esposito. Where she eats, who she talks to, who she sleeps with, when she last shit. EVERY SINGLE THING. I want to know who is pulling her strings and I want them cut. You understand me?”
Quincy gave a nod and Franco made a gesture of dismissal. “Everybody else you move quiet. No changes. It’s business as usual until we find out where we are. Now go, I have to think.”
It hadn’t gone great but it could have gone a lot worse. Aubrey let out a breath as she watched everyone file out of the dining room to retrieve their phones and leave. She turned to give her uncle a look but he jerked his chin at the door.
“You too. Go show your girl around…go shopping. Something huh?”
She gave a nod at that and bent to kiss him on the cheek before she led Stacie out too. They might not all agree with the way things had happened but at least they were all on board with the direction things were going to go from here on. If they could figure out where this attack was really coming from, they could resolve it before it became a threat to the Family business. If not…Aubrey was going to have to find a way to make Alice and her evidence disappear for good.
