Continued thoughts on RE8

This was copied when I was making my DeviantArt journal about this. And ah, thank goodness, I don’t need to space out shit. Guess DA using numbers like that helps me out lol.

Hope the title is creative enough. But...the game has been out a month. But I'll tag spoilers anyway. So I got done with the game at 12:04 or well, I put my PS4 into rest mode to charge my controller. I'm gonna say three things.

Donna's death honestly fucked me up...and not in a good way.

Moreau is likely the best boss in the game. Maybe.

Shut your fucking hole is honestly funny.

Okay but yes, I finally played more of Resident Evil 8. And surprisingly, and I wanted to save and be done with the game after I got into the confrontation with Heisenberg.

Let me be honest with you all. Resident Evil 8 is a fine game. While I am still critical about it's story and what choices they made. The gameplay is pretty fine, and I think it's an overall nice or alright experience. While I don't think this is the best RE game ever. And I do think this game got too much of high praising. It was overhyped honestly. But I do feel like it becomes I guess more enjoyable as you play it.

Now I'm gonna go over me going through the sections I talked about real quick. And no, I didn't beat Heisenberg...I haven't yet.

Donna and Angie's section is maybe the best part of the game. Gonna admit when you go to House Beneviento, it's actually beautiful seeing a waterfall beside it. And while I do think the Silent Hill comparisons are...I'm no expert. I've only watched movie format of the first four Silent Hill games. But that part is where the game is scariest at. Despite me being annoyed by the puzzle stuff in one part of this game. Luckily, I feel great I decided not to look anything up.

But I guess it's the closest we'll get to a modern Silent Hill game. But I overall loved this part of the game. Despite I was being stupid and didn't put half of a child puzzle piece into a door for a few minutes. I will admit, I do feel like the puzzles are easier than usual than older RE games...which is kind of fine with me.

Also that giant fetus baby thing is fucking creepy. Thank God I wasn't devoured by it...but amused I was spooked by maybe the projection falling and bookcases moving. Which I dubbed Scooby Doo shit.

And...I'm sorry, I was not expecting Donna's death to go like that...like wow...despite what my friend told me about...wow...just saying, I am not selling Alcina Dimitrescu's or Moreau's remains to the Duke. And I'm sure as Hell not selling Angie either. Besides, I get a lot of money in this game already. Seriously, I'm loaded.

It's just silly like...I didn't want to go to Donna's house first but I had to. Will admit, I do feel like she was underdeveloped. And that could go as well to maybe the other lords. And I did go back to Donna's place to get her treasure...where I fought this fucking giant with an axe...and I'm really interested in who the Hell is that Claudia Beneviento. Considering she died very young.

Moreau's section was pretty fine. But I think along with Alcina's section, was a pretty nice place. While Donna's section seemed a bit more simple, it was more focused on, creeping the shit out of me. Yet I was still terrified being in Castle Dimitrescu because it was my first time...and may still could be scared if I replay the game again after I finish it.

Will admit, I was annoyed I got killed by Moreau three times in the water. I think the reason I liked his part because his boss felt very classic Resident Evil. Maybe almost like Nemesis when he's fully unleashed in the original RE3. I feel like Moreau was pretty unique. Despite at first...kind of wonder if I do want him to look more a Gilman creature. Because he's likely inspired by that those kinds of films.

Also I will admit this, him popping up as a huge fish at first spooked me. Continuing on, I have been going to wells and using the crank to collect shit. Which got me to collect Alcina's golden statue of herself. Which yes...is very narcissistic of her haha! Along with the treasure from Donna...and I forgot to mention I've finished those first three...weird ball games...

Gonna admit, I strangely feel reminded of Sonic Spinball and those pinball sections in the Sonic series. I sound stupid saying that. They are interesting puzzles. I'm just glad and to me personally, Alcina's ones was the most tricky.

So after I beat Moreau, I got the Wolfbane, which was the pistol I was very interested in and it killed that weird beast(Is it like a dog turned Lycan dog or something?)...in one shot...this is maybe the strongest gun in the game. Holy shit, Barry Burton would be proud.

But yeah, I went through the Lycan's den. Turns out, Heisenberg wasn't there. Also the grenade launcher is great to use too. And seriously, the amount of Lycans heads I've blown up with mainly a normal pistol amazes me. Holy crap, I killed a shit ton of them, so many heads blown up.

After getting that last flask and finally opening a way to Heisenberg's factory, I finally get to meet the fella. To be honest, I'm not huge on Karl's voice. I've heard it before, and I know the voice actor got inspiration from Nicholas Cage...but I just imagine Karl's voice to be different. Maybe Cage when his voice is higher pitched, but I forget. Maybe if I get used to it, I'll be fine with it. Here's one of the more amusing lords and...really, the four lords and a lot of other stuff is why I like this game.

What I hate is of what later on happens and...the future of these main games.

I also wanna say that the part I saved on is when I have to escape the factory. But holy shit, how the fuck can the Duke get into these fucking places or whatever. At least the Merchant made sense and whatever else...I'm rambling on. I just find it amusing that this huge character can get into certain places that would maybe seem impossible or not.

But yeah...I'm very likely close to the end of the game. Played a couple of hours. Maybe 3 to 4 or so. While I am...critical of this chapter of the RE franchise. There are things I genuinely liked. I just strangely hate...that this is the final product and we're gonna have to live with it. This is the RE game people are making memes about...I shouldn't be very excited for the new movie reboot this year...but that's what I'm more excited for.

The 25th anniversary of Resident Evil has been going good. Despite my feelings on this new main game.

I remember now, I feel like when I finish this game and I be more detailed with my criticisms. I've heard from a good friend of mine that Under The Mayo has similar opinions to us of how we feel about Resident Evil 8...yet before I decided to listen to the usual 1 hour version of the RE8 save room theme. Which is this.

A day ago, he posted a video that has this thumbnail and the title of how God Of War ruined Resident Evil...I'm really wondering how the fuck is that possible. And my usual bitching is about the fact we hardly see our old characters anymore(Such as Jill who isn't such a big focus anymore), some characters are not better expanded upon or whatever else, and the future...I'm just not interested. Despite I've said to a friend I could be interested in seeing how it goes...

I just explained a little of what I had problems with. I'm just gonna say Capcom needs to be a bit more ambitious and meaningful with their storytelling now. Which may sound stupid...I just want better for this series. And when mentioning that upcoming movie. If we ever get a movie adaption of RE7 and 8, ESPECIALLY 8, I want that to be a loose adaptation and some shit changed.

Group 7 Independent Project!

Pre Production -

This is the second time I’m working with Group 7. It is truly an honour to be surrounded by such talented people. We have learnt from last time and we thought it would be interesting to switch up the roles. Here was what we ended up with:

As Production designer I had to create a mood board. We had discussed in meetings what aesthetic we wanted to go for and I believe we ended up with a mixture between films like “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Fight Club”. Either way, these were two of the films I took inspiration from when working on the mood board of the film.

Additionally, I had to think of the costume for both actors. For the man I chose to instead of having major differences in the two separate costumes to instead change them subtly to give a feeling he is still grounded in reality. So that means I added the glasses, changed the tie and gave him a watch to switch up how he looked. The Imagination costume is inspired from Ewan MacGregor’s character in “Big Fish'' we wanted to give him a full blue costume originally but I realised fairly soon that that wasn’t going to happen. So I adapted and decided to use his ties as a means of stating which reality he was in. When he is in the “dream world” he has a very colourful yellow tie but when he returns to his office I believe we went with a black/red tie.

For the woman, I chose to give her a very colourful look. This was purely so she could match the imagination around her. I discussed with Bonnie about possibly putting flowers in her hair but for some reason we couldn’t find anything. In regards to the rest of her costume I gave her shades so that there would be a physical separation between the two. If he can’t make eye contact with her how is he supposed to connect.

Overall, I’m very happy with the costumes and for a first attempt I’m actually quite proud.

Finally, set design. I had recently worked on a project called “Pied” where I had to create a whole set for my actors. That was pretty much my crash course for this independent project. Using the knowledge I can gain from creating that set I tried implementing it into the office workspace and the picnic arrangement. I’m happy with it but it will honestly be down to you to decide if I did a good job. If I could mention any little “fun facts” about what I did here would be a few:

I used a ping-pong table as the walls splitting the workspace

I tried spreading the food along the picnic like a wall that separated the two of them.

There is a jar of pickles in one of the shots. I don’t know who would bring a jar of pickles to a picnic but I thought it would be funny

On the back wall of the office there is a bunch of hidden Easter eggs *HOWEVER* David’s massive head covers them up!

In regards to how the other team members did. We developed the script ideas until we landed on this one. Jack had a great idea about filming some really nice shots of food. We were actually quite a big fan of this idea. I just thought Heather’s idea would allow us to experiment more.

Tom then wrote a (very) detailed script in collaboration with Heather, Bonnie drew a genuinely fantastic storyboard (she is too hard on herself haha) and Jack prepared for the shoot. One issue that presented itself fairly soon was the fact we had two actors on set. However, our Producer (Heather) handled it like a pro and we managed to get the all clear. Overall, a very hardworking start with the promise of Bonnie doing a short animation for the storyboard. (I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing it)

Production -

The shoot day was very fun. We all arrived at 11:30am and we made our way over to the location. Originally, we had planned to film on top of a hill however, things quickly changed and Jack said there was a fantastic path to film on. I was fairly set on the hill idea (As I had imagined the scene being somewhat similar to the UP opening montage) but he said it was a better location and I trust him.

So this is where it got a bit funky. It turns out the location had been converted into a dirt road since the last time Jack had been there. This was a bit demoralising as we had carried a lot of props out but luckily we had seen a location closer to the beach that could possibly work and the rest was history. That very location near the beach ended up where we would film.

With Jack directing and myself on camera we began to make our way through the storyboard Bonnie had devised. I have to be honest there were parts where we deviated from what was on the storyboard: For example, there is a section where he falls over however it didn’t look natural so we thought of another way to film it. This was where I got a bit carried away with VFX. In the long run I’m pretty sure everyone is happy with it but I wasn’t too sure at the time.

Jack did well as a director, he worked well with David and Kady especially when it came to movements of the actors. There isn’t any dialogue in the scenes so it's mainly physical language instead of verbal. My only advice for Jack would be to do a bit more research on the project before going onto the shoot because there were parts of the shoot where actors would ask questions about their character and I wasn’t confident he knew the answer.

In regards to me, I find it very hard to create something someone else envisions because I’m used to directing and filming projects on my own. I definitely think I improved on this project and having the storyboard and detailed script was a big help. I also felt I should have been more prepared as it didn’t look very good in front of the actors with me fiddling around with the camera because I had set it up in the wrong position.

Overall, I think it was a very fun shoot and it went pretty smoothly. You're going to hit speed bumps on the way but I believe Jack and I handled them well.

Oh also, forgot to mention that I had to also record sound and label all the audio and footage for Heather (why do I almost call you Clair XD) It didn’t take as long as I expected and was actually somewhat therapeutic if you can believe haha.

Post-Production -

The post production process has been going well. We have plenty of time until the deadline and we have already got a very solid draft edit so I’m not worried. I just kind of want to get it finished.

First and foremost, Heather has been doing a fantastic job editing the video. She works efficiently, takes feedback on board and seems to me to have a very solid feel on the fundamentals of editing. Looking at the edit now, there are definite issues but nothing that can’t be solved in 10 minutes. It’s clean, fluid and most of all enjoyable to watch. I’m worried without a synopsis people might not get it but I guess you could see it as “up for interpretation” haha!

Before I talk about my role in the Post-Production process, I just want to mention who else is working on the edit as well. Bonnie is planning on adding some very small animations to the edit to give it that feeling of “not-reality” I think this is crucial because without the animation in the shots. When the man defies the laws of physics it will seem really strange. I believe Tom is doing sound, I’ve supplied them with plenty of audio from on set and am free at anytime to get more for them so it will just be down to when it is completed, I have faith that Tom will create something really special with the Sound design as he will probably blend the sound of the surrounding nature with cold office sounds. I’m excited.

Now onto the part I play. I offered to do the VFX for the film and I’m very happy with them. It’s nothing incredibly tedious to create. It’s very basic motion tracking and keyframing but I think using it in small doses works well and with it accompanied by the animation and sound it will take the film to new levels of quality.

I’m just going to talk about the final VFX shot as it was the most challenging (but fun) part to work on. First, I had to figure out how I was going to get the image of Kady onto the wall without printing her because I realised I would be able to match up the shots if I had just zoomed out from an actual image. So I went for a bit of green paper. I motioned tracked it through After Effects and then played with the colour so it matched the scene. I then added an artificial zoom in Premiere and I got the final result. Now, it is not perfect in any means. I wasn’t able to track back any further than I did so the image in the paper actually moves but with the help of Heather and the use of changing aspect ratios I think it really works. I guess we will have to see how people respond.

So that is about everything on the project. I will be back to reflect next month on the finished project. Hopefully it turns out okay. Hopefully, it doesn’t turn into a train wreck. I’m sure it won’t :)

A bad night

In all of Sonic’s years living on Earth, he never expected to get close to humans by a rant on his favorite baseball field. However, after a crazy adventure with that Dr. Eggman (as he likes to call him), he found a house on his favorite humans of all time: Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady.

And so there he was, on the Wachowski’s attic with a race car bed and a mental breakdown at 3 am.

He was just 15 so no one could blame him for feeling so confused, but damn- he never had this kind of stuff when he was alone. Sure, he felt like he wanted a real friend for once instead of a turtle, but now that he wasn’t lonely, well… he felt like he didn’t deserve anything that his new life has given him.

Even if he just had saved the world.

But it’s also his fault the world was in danger in the first place.

Ugh, stupid teenager thoughts…

He changed his position a thousand times, but he wasn’t able to sleep in any way. A lot of thoughts and images were going on his brain, none of them making sense at all. Was he a creep for stalking people for over ten years? Did he just waste his whole life watching random people in town instead of making a move? Could things have been smoother if he just introduced himself first? Was he a jerk for demanding help to Donut Lord?

…

Was he just a burden? Maybe Tom and Maddie just took him in as a sign of pity. Maybe they didn’t mean it when they said they wanted him there. Maybe all those times they have shared around the house don’t mean anything at all to them…

Maybe he just should go.

…

He suddenly felt tears threatening to come out of his eyes, and his body was shaking with more intensity than what he could control on his own. Was it fear?

Probably.

“Oh no oh no oh no oh no” He whispered while panicking, trying his best to keep composture. Tom and Maddie didn’t need this right now- he was old enough to take care of this. He isn’t a crybaby! Why would he randomly cry on the house he always wanted to be a part in and now he is but he doesn’t feel like he deserves it at all?

…

“Ah fuck” His words trembled, repeating a curse he knows so well thanks to the movie Speed, his personal favorite. He wished he could just be stuck as a cool character saying swear words and driving nice cars, but unfortunately, he has feelings. Fucked up, teenager feelings, and tears finally rolling down his cheeks.

He hugged himself and started to hush as a desperate move to calm down, but it definitely wasn’t working. He has always been his only source of comfort until now, why couldn’t he do that anymore?

“Okay, Sonic, calm down” He started to mutter while sobbing, but it was just getting worse. He was trying so hard to keep his shit together, yet he seemed to fail more each time he tried. He hasn’t talked about his feelings to anyone, and he kind of wanted Tom or Maddie to show up and ask him how he was and talk to him and hug him and-

Without noticing, he started to sob louder every second. He tried to keep it down, don’t get him wrong, but he just couldn’t. He needed someone right now…

And so someone arrived.

“Sonic?” Maddie showed up at his door, her voice clearly stating that she was asleep a minute ago. “Are you alright?”

“I, y-yeah!” He quickly cleaned his tears, although new ones continued to show up. “I’m absolutely fine! D-don’t worry about me!”

“…Sonic” She looked straight at him, obviously not believing a word he said.

“D-don’t worry! I’m d-definitely pouring some t-tears now but is just that! N-nothing to worry about, haha!”

“…”

She went ahead and sat next to him, her eyes showing nothing but concern. Sonic tried his best to not look at her at all and just pray for the night to be over…

It didn’t work.

Once his eyes met hers, his tears were practically unstoppable. It didn’t make any sense that he was crying so hard, yet he was.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“I… I-”

“It’s okay if you don’t want to, and it’s also okay to cry”

“…is… is it really okay to cry?”

Maddie looked at him amazed, but it quickly came to her mind he’d been alone for years. He had no parental figure to guide him, nor anyone to talk to about his feelings. He had to learn things himself and keep his mouth shut to the rest of the world.

It had been definitely hard for him.

“It is okay to cry” She gently touched his arm, which made him flinch a little. “We can’t be strong all the time, you know? Tom also cries, and I do, too. I understand you may be feeling overwhelmed about all these changes”

“I-is that so?” He weakly smiled and cleaned his face as well as he could. “T-then this isn’t that m-much of an issue, right?! I s-should be good in a matter of seconds!”

“…Sonic-”

“Y-yeah! I will be good just as long as I, oof, h-have some time to go back to my little old self!”

“Sonic, dear-”

“I, I just need some good night's sleep! Yeah, that’s definitely what I need, haha…! This will be alright and totally forgotten in the morning!”

“…are you sure you will be fine?”

“Y-yeah! Just been having stu- silly thoughts, that’s all!”

“…” Maddie let out a short sigh, before offering a small smile to Sonic. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate in calling us. I know you don’t want to talk about it right now, but whenever you feel like it… please don’t keep it to yourself, ok dear?”

“…y-yeah. I… I will call you if I need anything… thanks”

“Don’t worry” Her smile widened. “Now try to sleep, okay? If you continue having problems to do so, you can sleep with us if you want to”

“O-of course, t-thanks”

Maddie sighed, her eyes not breaking contact with the blue hedgehog’s until she decides it’s time to finally leave.

Then the only thing left was silence, messier thoughts, and the ghost of her presence.

Even when he thought he was going to be absolutely better after having contact with people, he had lied to himself once again.

He never failed to do that.

His vision became absolutely blurry, negative thoughts filling his brain mercilessly.

He knew life wasn’t bad at all. He knew that it was just a stupid feeling or even just a stupid phase. He knew that his grief wasn’t going to last forever, but all that mattered at the moment was the present.

He was devastated.

He had lied to not only himself but also to the woman he admired the most.

He continued to sob and sob until he passed out by his tiredness, curled in bed holding his pillow as if his life depended on it. And just like that, the night ended in such a bitter way Sonic never imagined having. He didn’t want to be weak, but the brain is so powerful and absolutely cruel to the beholder. He continued to whimper on his sleep, not being able to escape his mind at all.

Sometimes bad nights can’t be fixed.

So uh, is it bad I’m still not over the Sonic movie? I really like it, and it’s definitely going to be on my heart for a long while.

I don’t know Movie!Sonic’s age, so I just gave him the age that is canon (and also pretty fitting).

Anyway, hope you guys like this thing I made and definitely not cried while making it haha

SonAmy 2020 Valentine’s Day special

By this point of the year, Sonic usually prepares himself for a barrage of flirty comments, love-related gifts... and also for Amy’s love comments. Even if he ends up feeling quite nervous and unconfortable around the pink hedgehog’s advances during what she calls “dates”, Sonic has come to expect these types of actions from Amy, and in the end, he quite likes them.

“There’s something rather special about [Amy’s] actions, I think they are... cute? No, no, that wasn’t the word I was looking... are you going to leave this part out of the interview, right? ...right?” Sonic once stated during an interview with a Sonic news site.

This year though there were no major plans for a Valentine’s Day date. Sonic, feeling quite confused and concerned, took this lack of planning as an alarming sign of Amy maybe giving up on years of fruitless dates, and so in the afternoon of Valentine’s Day, he built up enough courage to show at her apartment on Station Square carrying a rose, some cookies Tails made on his behalf, and a copy of one of his favorite movies, because he didn’t actually know what to bring to watch.

“Okay...” Sonic thought to himself, as he nervously reached for Amy’s doorbell. “Here goes nothing.”

As he waited for Amy to respond, he took notice of some loud muffled sound coming from one of the apartments.

“Is that what I think it is?” Sonic put a hand to his left ear, trying to listen closely to that bumping sound.

“Sonic? Is that you?” Amy was calling from the intercom, with an agitated tone. “I’m opening the door, come over, quickly!”

Her voice was almost drown out by the loud music in the background, but Sonic catched everything she said. “What’s gotten into her?” He let out a small sigh as he opened the door, but he won’t admit that part of him felt quite aliviated when she responded with that much enthusiasm.

As Sonic reached Amy’s apartment and opened the door, the music became clearer and clearer. Soon he found himself in Amy’s living room, staring at her dancing with the biggest of smiles and holding a square box of candy like a microphone.

When she noticed him, she quickly reached for his hand. “Hey! You brought something?” She grabbed Sonic’s stuff as he got more and more intimidated by her extreme happiness. “Just leave them on the couch, quickly! Come here, let’s sing!”

Sonic opened his eyes in shock. “S-sing? H-hey you know I-I’m not good at t-that! No way!”

Amy shook her head from side to side, “No excuses! C’mon! Another road that we must traveeeel~”

Sonic groaned.

“Amyyyy...”

He was standing rather stiff in the middle of the living room, trying to avoid eye contact with her as she kept her happy dancing routine.

“I know you loooveee this soooong~” She teased, and gave him the empty box she was using. “Here, c’mon the chorus is about to staaaart!”

“...okay.”

“I knew you couldn’t stand still forever! Okay! ‘Cause now I know THAT I NEED YOU EVERY DAYYYY!”

As her singing got louder -but still very clear and lovely- Sonic finally gave up to her wishes, started moving a little bit more to the beat, and provided backing vocals during the chorus of the song...

“You are the one that makes me feel so hiiiiiiiiigh (Just like the diamonds in the sky!)

I never want to hear you say goodbyyyyeeee (Cause you’re my diamond in the sky!)”

As they kept singing, Sonic quickly lost track of himself, not realizing that he was holding her hands and spining and jumping around together...

“C’mon, once again!” Amy exclaimed, filled with joy.

“You are the one that makes me feel so hiiiiiigh (Just like the diamonds in the sky!) I never want to hear you say goodbyyyyeee (Cause you’re my diamond in the skyyyyyy!)”

“Ohh... wooow... I’m feeling quite...” After that bit of singing, Sonic started to snap back into reality. “Ah! What was I doing!” He dropped Amy’s hands and fell on the couch.

Amy kept singing, now in front of him, holding the empty box once again and with a hand on her waist.

“Where do all the rainbows go?” She was getting closer to him, Sonic just watched, still agitated.

“To somewhere, I don’t know” She moved her hand from the waist to point at a random site.

“Wherever it is...” She winked at him, “I want to go ...with you.”

Sonic didn’t realize he was blushing, as he kept staring at her eyes.

“Where...” He hesitated for a moment, but Amy quickly lowered the volume to hear what he had to say. “Where did you learn to sing that well?”

Amy blushed as well with such a strong compliment coming from none other than Sonic the fricking Hedgehog.

“You... you didn’t know?” At first she sounded cute, but she wasn’t able to hold her laughing for too long. “Ohhh, Sonic! We’ve known each other for sooo much and you never knew about my singing?”

Sonic felt offended. “Well.” He crossed his arms, looking away as he kept blushing, “One time I give you a compliment and you’re making fun of me!”

"Haha! I’m not making fun of you, silly!” Amy smiled, as he found his position to be quite cute. “I’m just saying you have to spend more time knowing me!”

She grew even more confident with every second. “Besides, I noticed the way you looked at me while we were singing, that’s the look of someone who enjoyed himself a loooot~”

Sonic was the literal opposite of Amy, with his ego hurt, and growing more insecure each moment as he started to curl on the couch. “I-I just got c-carried away, o-okay!?” Then he whispered to himself. “I felt different, I-I felt so warm and fuzzy inside”

Amy put her hands to her chest, giving him a tender look. “Hey, it’s alright. There’s nothing wrong about the way you acted, don’t worry. We were having some unique fun, am I right?”

Sonic slowly nodded, as he started to open himself up a little more.

“C’mon.” Amy lend her right hand towards him. “The chorus is about to start again, are you ready for round two? Don’t leave me hangiiiiing~”

Sonic looked at her hand, then smiled at her. “I won’t.”

[[[BONUS]]]

[Seeing how I got carried by the previous scene, I decided I want to elaborate a little more]

“Ooof! Man that was quite the show!” Sonic exclaimed, rather exhausted. “But look at the time! It’s getting dark already and the only thing we did is dancing!”

“So? What’s the problem with that?” Amy asked, as she was walking towards the music player.

“Well... I thought you wanted me to pick you up, maybe have some tea and then you would propose one of your weird dates and I would say ‘no way!’ and you would get your hammer out so we go out but the date gets interrupted by Eggman doing his...” Sonic interrupted himself as he noticed what Amy was doing. “Hey, hey, hey! Are you going to do what I think you’re going to do?”

Amy gave him the smug look. “Are you going to stop me from doing it~?”

Sonic pointed his finger at her in a flash. “AMY ROSE, I SWEAR IF YOU PUT ONE MORE SONIC R SONG...”

“Yeah?”

“...I won’t sing with you anymore.”

“Is that so? Let’s see if you can stand still for the next four minutes” And she started playing another Sonic R song.

“Oh no, not that one!” Sonic exclaimed as he instantly recognized the song. His feet also couldn’t resist to move with the beat.

“Heh, I know it’s your favorite~”

“It seems like it’s yours as well... agh, stupid feet! Stop moving!”

“Resistance is futile, Soooniiiic~”

For the next half minute or so Sonic tried to resist, but soon enough he gave up, sprung up from the couch, and picked another candy box from a nearby table, this one still full.

By this point, Amy was already singing and looking at him at every step of the way.

“When the time has come

I don't want you to run

You know that you're the only oneeeeee”

Sonic joined just in time for the chorus, but this time he sung alongside her, probably even louder as both stared at each other, smiling.

“All I need is you!

For always and forever!

All you need is meee!

Remember when I say...

All we need is love!

For us to be together!”

Suddenly, he got very close to her, almost touching foreheads.

“’Cause you’re my number oneeeeeeee!”

Then, Sonic backed out a bit, feeling he might have gotten a little too close to confort.

“Oh, wow, I’m sorry” He was blushing again, looking down and to the side. “Y-you know it’s my favorite and I’ve been enjoying this time but I-I think it’s finally t-time for m-me to g-go...”

Amy interrupted him, before he could move away further, she held his arm with one hand and pulled his chin towards her with the other.

“Just shut up and kiss me now.”

I FINALLY saw the Sonic movie (Went with my bro in the end I can finally unfilter everything Sonic related and oh man. Oh man oh man sorry folks but I need to unhinge my jaw and spew out my thoughts, spoilers under link.

It was, WAY better than I expected. WAY better. I was worried that the majority of the film was just going be “haha cheesy dumb kiddy movie but sonic is here lol” but it felt like they really got a decent grip on Sonic as a chatacter and his universe. So at it’s lowest I would say “It was a cheesy dumb kiddy movie but Sonic is here, and everything feels like Sonic.”

All the little details were esp nice to see. I loved Sonic when he was rolling into a ball, him liking chilli dogs etc...Just the little things that made me go “hey that’s in the games/other medias haha”

Jim Carrey’s take on Eggman is a lot more...meaner? He was pretty nasty and rude to everyone and there were just a few times I thought “wow damn dude”. Not that it’s a bad thing, just something I found to be interesting. But he was silly and did a lot of quirky things as expected.

Adored Eggman’s look at the end. Holy shit, despite being the total opposite in size/shape, they got it spot on.

NiGHTS was in the SEGA title!!!! I see you my clown angel!

KNUCKLES??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Baby Sonic? Baby Sonic!

I thought Sonic’s backstory was interesting, esp in regards to Longclaw. But I really wish we learnt more about it. Like, why does Sonic have to hide? Who is Longclaw?? Where did they both come from??? My head hurts.

Do Mobian birds exist or is Longclaw an example of what mobian birds look like? I love my sonic birds but I wanna know--would, say, Jet look like Sonic or be more bird-like, like Longclaw?

When Sonic got angry with Tom about wanting to move to another state, I appreciate that Sonic learnt he was in the wrong and shouldn’t stop him to doing what he wanted despite the end decision. I did like that they portrayed Sonic as an actual teenager. A bit of a emotional and “immature” brat. I liked that. I feel sometimes that gets lost in the current Sonic games a bit so it was a bit of fresh air.

There was a lot of adult jokes.

SANIC DRAWING? SANIC DRAWING! Biggest issue with meme jokes like Sanic however is I was the only one in the theatre laughing. Whoops.

Gonna say something that might be unpopular but after seeing the film I feel my mind is made up. I prefer Movie film sonic voice over current game sonic voice.

“Hey I wonder why they said not to show Sonic’s feet in this fi--Oh.”

“Fart joke? In my Sonic movie?”

TAILS?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!

THANK GOODNESS IT WAS ONLY US AND ANOTHER FAMILY BECAUSE I YELLED OUT LOUD AND CHEERED I WAS NEARLY CRYING THEY REALLY DID THAT!

During the final scenes, I really needed to pee and had to hold it in and imma be honest, my bladder must have gone into lockdown after that final scene because when I got home I pissed for a good 3 minutes.

Loved the little credits segment and how it looked like the 2D games.

No Pingas joke very dissapointed. :’-(

All in All, I really enjoyed this movie. Ok, it’s cheesy and generic but you could tell they tried, esp after the model change crisis. I appreciate that they improved the design and changed the release day to help the animators. Though the CGI doesn’t stand out to other Live action/CGI stugg, when interacting with said live action, the improved design helped out a lot and I really appreciate the film. I know that 10 y/o me would have been crying tears of joy over this film since, 25 y/o me (now) was near tears anyway.

Defo go check it out if you want, I’d go again if tickets weren’t expensive af and the fear of being the only one in the screening but let’s hope the sequel does get made with just as much love and let’s get this bad boi on home media, STAT! <3

Hey everyone, uhh so I have some tea for you all.

So I met this guy (I’ll refer to him as J) during the last meeting of the quarter for the graphic design club last fall. Here’s everything that happened between December 5 through February 22.

December 5

Honestly, I haven’t noticed J at any of the previous meetings, but that one night, he just came up to me out of the blue and complimented me on my cozy winter gear.

So J and I happened to be taking Intro to Design that quarter and we talked about our group projects for the class, which we just turned in earlier that day (I had just pulled two consecutive all-nighters and had just taken a 3-hour nap prior to the meeting, so I was very sleep deprived at this point). We continued our conversation while walking down some stairs and outside the building, and he asked me about other clubs that I’m involved in, to which I told him that I’m the secretary and Head of Hufflepuff for the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) and that I’m also in the ballroom dance club. He seemed very interested in HPA. He mentioned that he played second violin in the video game orchestra (VGO) and that they were having a quarterly concert that weekend. A friend in HPA had promoed the VGO concert the night before, but I wasn’t really interested, as I had no knowledge of video game music. J and I exchanged Instagram handles and later that night, I answered all of his questions about HPA. Then on Sunday, sort of at the last minute, I found out that a few friends from HPA were going to the VGO concert and I went along because $5 for a concert is not bad, and I haven’t been to an orchestra performance in a while. The concert was so much better than I expected!

December 9

Finals week just started and J randomly asked if I was studying on campus 👀

December 11

We met up at a boba shop near my apartment to study for the Intro to Design final (it was raining pretty hard and J refused to have me bike out to campus in the rain). We studied off a Quizlet set for about 3 hours until my laptop’s battery was running low, and then we talked for another couple hours! It turns out we have a lot in common! We’re both only children, 22 years old, left-handed, design majors (J is actually a design and managerial economics double major), and we play the violin (I used to play violin and cello, but I digress). Oh and we both have an iNTeResTinG injury story haha. Then, before we went our separate ways, he gave me a one-armed hug, which I couldn’t reciprocate because I had my arms full with a cup of boba and my umbrella.

December 12

J DM’ed me out of the blue asking for my Spotify wrapped up. I normally don’t give in to trends easily, and this was something I wasn’t really interested in sharing with the entire world, but I shared it with him anyways (Spoiler: It’s mostly Game of Thrones soundtracks, Taylor Swift, and BTS). Despite being an orchestra nerd, I find it really difficult keeping up with popular music, and my musical taste stays fairly consistent even several years later. I was kind of expecting him to laugh at my musical taste, but he actually complimented me for liking dramatic tv/film soundtracks. And then we arranged another study session right before the design final.

December 13

The Intro to Design final was supposed to be 50 questions, all multiple-choice, no trick questions. It was supposed to be really easy, and I thought we got almost everything down at the previous study session. So why were we having another study session right before the exam? I thought either he really wanted an A in the class, or he wanted to see me again before we went on winter break. Right before going in for the exam, he asked if I wanted to meet up again for a “post-final celebration” when we were done with the exam. Okay, now I was really starting to think he wanted to spend some more time with me before winter break 👀

So after the design final, we walked down to one of two boba shops on the edge of campus and downtown. We both ordered our drinks, he got some popcorn chicken, and we talked for four hours! I can’t remember everything we talked about, but time really flew by. And then, before we went home, he gave me a one-armed hug again.

December 14

I had plans to fly home to LA today. I had spent the previous night cleaning my apartment and packing stuff (I managed to forget to bring a pair of sneakers because, for some reason, dumbass me decided to wear heeled boots to the airport because ~fashion~). I was sitting in the airport, about to board the plane, when I got a message from J. He remembered that I was flying that day and was asking if I got home safely. Aww he actually cares. I told him that I would be boarding soon and will be offline for the next couple hours. And then I updated him when I got off the plane, when my parents picked me up at LAX, while we sat in the typical LA traffic, until we all made it home.

December 15 - January 5

Over the next few weeks of winter break, we messaged each other a couple times every day. We shared pictures of the holiday decorations in our home, and I shared pictures and video clips of my pet bunny too. On Chistmas Eve, he asked if I had any plans, to which I told him we were going out for dinner to celebrate my mom’s birthday. He wished my mom happy birthday and I passed the birthday wishes to my mom. “Hey mom, my friend says happy birthday.” “Thank you — who???” And I had to tell my mom about J (whoops). Her judgmental ass was not exactly happy to hear that J is a Caucasian dude from yeehaw country, and after showing her J’s Instagram feed, she was not a fan of his art style smh. Anyways, the day I was coming back to Davis, J was like AHHHH you’re back!!!!!!! Just pure excitement 💖

January 9 - 16

We met up at yet another boba shop after the first week of classes. Our meeting was shorter than all our previous meetings, because I had to bike back to give an apartment tour later that afternoon. Two weeks into the winter quarter, we met after our design studio classes and walked to an HPA meeting together. We also went to a graphic design club meeting together, after which he offered to drive me home so that I wouldn’t have to bike with the cold wind on my face. I trusted J at this point, so I gratefully accepted. I think my trust in him went up at least 10 times in this moment, because J managed to secure my small and heavy bike to the bike rack on the back of his car, which already had his bike strapped in. After dropping me off at my apartment, he invited me out for dinner that weekend (it was also MLK weekend).

January 18

J picked me up at 7. The restaurant he chose was hella ~ f a n c y ~. It was an Italian restaurant downtown with dim lighting and pasta priced at $13 - $16. He said he didn’t know the place would be that fancy and that he trusted Yelp’s description of “casual Italian.” I told a friend about our sort-of-date night and she thinks J picked a date-y restaurant on purpose 👀 Oh and my mom went the extra mile of writing down J’s name, the place we were going to, and I was to call home at 10 PM (I ended up getting back and called an hour early).

February 14 - Valentine’s Day ❤️

Unfortunately, J never came to another HPA meeting because the campus radio station, KDVS, holds meetings at the same time, and he’s trying to get a job with them. And we don’t really see each other very often because design classes are usually 3-hours long and J is really busy with 5 classes. But J has been super excited about Yule Ball ever since he met me. J came over while I was tabling for ticket sales. He mentioned that VGO was going to see Sonic that night, and invited me to hang with VGO. Let me tell you, it was quite an experience and definitely not the typical Valentine’s Day date.

We pulled into a Sonic drive-in for dinner (because gotta get in that Sonic mood lol). A girl introduced herself as D (name altered to protect identity, of course). She clearly has some sort of leadership role in the group because everyone pays attention to her, but she constantly makes jokes about being everyone’s daddy. The jokes are so vulgar and obscene. It was like weirdest video game nerd and band kid hybrid (J later tells me she’s a violinist. What?! Orchestra people are usually super chill lol). After dinner, we get in our cars and head down the street to the movie theater. The VGO had reserved seats in Row J. J and I had just booked our tickets several hours earlier and we were in Row F. Throughout the movie, someone in the theater yelled at every pivotal moment (including, yes, that Tails reveal in the post credits). J thoroughly enjoyed the movie and laughed along with whomever was yelling behind us, while I knew absolutely nothing going into it, except that Sonic is a blue hedgehog that can run super fast. J also gave one additional bit of info before the movie: Sonic really likes chili corn dogs for some strange reason???

So that’s how my Valentine’s Day went lol

February 18

J came by around 3 in the afternoon, right before we were going to pack up for the day, and purchased a Yule Ball ticket. He’s obviously very excited to go to Yule Ball with me but he says he doesn’t know how to dance. I told him we have a waltz lesson planned. He’s like aww and says he wants me to personally teach him (my heart 💕). And as always, he gave me a hug before leaving to go to class. Recently, I noticed that J has been giving full hugs instead of his usual one-armed hugs, though it depends on the situation.

February 22

✨❄️ Y u l e B a l l ❄️✨

J and I arrived separately at Yule Ball because I had to help set up the venue for the event and I had spent the entire day working on an Azkaban wanted poster prop and literally finished it two hours before our meeting time for setting up the venue. The dance was supposed to start at 7 PM and J got there early enough to help me out with last-minute decorations. I had signed up to be in charge of the photobooth from 7 to 7:30, but no one came for pictures during that 30-minute period, so I was free for the rest of the night. J and I had a fantastic time admiring the detailwork in the decorations around the venue and laughing and dancing to the weird selection of 2000s music. J did pretty okay with learning waltz basics and I gave him tips here and there on standing in closed frame, balance, the slight tension in the left hand, etc.

Sometime towards the end of the night, my ballroom friend pulled me aside for a bathroom chat and asked if we’re dating. I don’t know??? We haven’t decided to call it official so ??

After helping clean up everything at the end of the night, J dropped off a friend and right before turning to drop me off (I live across the street from that friend), he remembered that I hadn’t had actual food all day prior to Yule Ball (aww he actually cares, and he probably wanted some extra time with me even though my apartment was right there). So we went downtown for (a very late) dinner. While we chatted over food and boba, our conversation drifted towards soundtrack music and I mentioned The Theory of Everything soundtrack, my favorite soundtrack besides Game of Thrones. J immediately searched up The Theory of Everything soundtrack album and streamed it on the way home (that’s some serious dedication right there), and he liked it!

Oh and I forgot to mention that J forgot to bring a jacket and I had a very warm scarf and coat, so we held onto each other with a one-armed hug while we walked to his car. I really love his hugs, one-armed or full hugs.

I usually post a picture from Yule Ball every year so here’s this year’s! Yep, that’s J. And we’re both Ravenclaws :)

Tinfoil hat theory: The Sonic we’ve seen in the movie promotional material was never the actual design in all/most of the movie.

This is almost certainly just me trying so hard to believe they wouldn’t actually screw up Sonic’s design *that bad,* but a part of me thinks this could actually be true.

Part of me believes that in the movie, or even most of the movie, how Sonic will actually look is much closer to the design we know and love rather than the drowned rat gremlin we’ve been shown in the posters/trailer. I’ve thought (hoped) this for a while but this tweet is what makes me think it might actually be possible. I think that the controversy over Sonic’s design is a tool for free marketing, and Paramount may have given us this awful design as a way to stir up the drama and start a conversation. I’ve heard this movie talked about in nearly every news platform in some way, and brought up even by friends and family that know almost nothing about Sonic, so if this is the case it seems to be working.

The first reason I started thinking about this was at that first “movie trailer”/poster reveal from late 2018 where all we got to see was Sonic’s silhouette, and then NO OTHER OFFICIAL INFORMATION ever since then. It caused a pretty big stir in fan circles and just kept everyone guessing and very concerned about Sonic’s potential design. Now that the trailer has been released there has been a ton of buzz about the film everywhere, and all Paramount had to do was upload the trailer to YouTube at no cost.

The other reason I think this could be possible is that I think they may have done something very similar with Eggman’s design. From the trailer it seems to me as if Eggman descends into becoming and looking more and more Eggman-like as the movie goes on. For example, he looks just like Jim Carrey in a black lab coat and a small mustache when he’s first shown, but a teaser after the trailer ends shows him bald with a large frizzy mustache and goggles as he’s often seen in other Sonic media. But the day before the trailer released, we were given an image closer to the initial look. This lead fans to believe that Eggman would not be very true to design, only to be disproven at the end of the trailer the next day.

Lastly, we have that tweet that came out today. I admittedly don’t know much about the movie/animation industry, but I would think an overhaul of the CGI main character’s design, even minor ones, would be incredibly costly and time consuming, and I don’t know how feasible it would be to change all that by November.

So, I wonder if whatever they’re “changing” his design to is actually how Sonic has always looked throughout the movie’s production, and all of this design controversy has just been done for marketing. Or maybe they’ll do something along the lines of what they seem to be doing with Eggman; maybe he’ll briefly look like this horrible version we’ve been given in the film for whatever reason, but then he’ll be transformed into the Sonic we know.

And it’s not like movie studios are strangers to purposely editing footage in trailers to mislead audience’s expectations slightly. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple Marvel movies that have purposely had trailers with nonexistent scenes or even edited scenes that look completely different from the actual movie, just to avoid giving away details in the movie itself.

I’d love to hear what you think; again this may just all be wishful thinking, haha.

REDiversary In Review❗

Happy REDiversary

As you may know, 7 years ago, this magnificent creation came into existence…

I have to admit, when this era first started, I didn’t know what to think. With **WANEGBT **coming out which had a very different vibe from the Speak Now era, I wasn’t sure what to expect. This was the most mainstream pop thing I’d ever heard Taylor do. I wasn’t really against that sound, I just wasn’t used to Taylor’s music having so many “top 40 anthem” vibes even though Mine was very clearly a multi-format bop.

After **Begin Again **came out I felt a lot better about what was to come around the corner. This song gave me all of those warm and fuzzy feelings that Taylor has always been so good at bringing to the surface.

I was also in a very bad time in my life. Earlier that year in June, I went through a really bad breakup. The kind of breakup that hits you from your blind spot. The kind of breakup where you think things are going great and then you find out they were thinking of cheating on you and have been unhappy for the entire time and then the night before exam week, she ends it in a text with no remorse. It was extra impact because this was my first serious relationship and I honestly never pictured it ending… if you catch my drift.

Anyways, for months I was in a bad way with a short fuse and WANEGBT just ended up making me more depressed because it reminded me of how she was probably thinking about me right now just like Taylor was speaking in her words (this girl was also a Swiftie btw). That made me feel hopeless in many respects and is one of the other reasons why I was unsure about this era. But I always have faith in Taylor no matter what so I kept my mind alive and my ear to the wall anyway.

Then… Begin Again came out and I felt a glimmer of hope like the sun coming out after a hurricane. Suddenly I was excited about this era again and it did not let me down.

RED pulled me out of that hole that I feared might become my grave…

I remember putting it on, on release day on my headphones hiding away from my family, just me, Tay and some headphones.

She had me at the very first song. State of Grace feels like one of the most magical, ethereal and underappreciated songs from that record and I think it should have been a single. Every time I listen to State of Grace I have like an out of body experience and I can just close my eyes and she takes me back in time to a world in my life that was just happy and innocent. I truly love this song.

Next to that I loved the concept of** Red**. The whole synesthetic concept of assigning colors to different types of love and emotions is both a genius concept for a song and a genius concept for an album. I loved the intimacy of Treacherous and once again the concept is so relatable. As much as I didn’t like the pop vibes at first… **IKYWT **is totally a bop and I love it.

Then I came across All To Well. I just burst into tears for this entire song. It really felt like the closure I needed. Was it really closure? No I guess not. But just knowing that someone else knows what this feels like and also that someone else was able to describe what I felt – the most visceral emotion – and put it into words that just seemed so perfect to describe this horrible impact I felt… that was all the closure I needed.

22, again… such a bop and maybe even my favorite bop from Red as far as party songs go.** I Almost Do** is such a beautiful country ballad. The glam and delicateness of this song really just leaves me feeling so… comfortable. I have to admit even **WANEGBT **after a while kinda grew on me, it’s definitely an ear worm.

Stay Stay Stay is adorable as hell and always brings a smile to my face. The Last Time has a very emotional feel with some CRAZY Snow Patrol vibes (for obvious reasons). Side note, I love the collabs on this album the most I think of any collabs she’s done (other than maybe Babe). Holy Ground is SUCH A BANGER!! I like the energy in the live performance a bit more. I feel like Nathan missed the energy a bit in the production on this one but that’s just me being fussy. I still love the album version a lot tho.

Sad Beautiful Tragic always brings me to tears. It reminds me of how good love can feel but also that Love has hurt me more in my life than it has made me feel good. To this day it makes me remember relationships and love interests passed and I tend to reminisce a bit. Its like the best and worst home movie playing back in my mind at the same time. The Lucky One is everything. Again, lovely falsetto from her at the beginning and super tight pop prod here. This makes me think of my worst middle school days and loneliness. I don’t feel those things when I listen to this but it makes me think of those feelings and memories.

Everything Has Changed is the song that CHANGED EVERYTHING!!! TO DATE is my fav Ed Sheeran song lol. I do like a lot of stuff with Ed but something about how their stories intertwine in this song and how the sonic signatures of their vocals mesh so well I think is just magical. Starlight has some mad pop vibes, a very unique intro. Not a huge fan of the feel in verse one. I thought it was a bit weak going into it out of the intro but that’s more of a Dann and Nathan thing than a Tay thing. Once the song gets going it’s great but it’s just that awkward first verse kickoff. And then of course there is Begin Again which is also one of my favorite songs off the album and I think an AWESOME way to end the standard album.

Deluxe: The Moment I Knew is such an ANTHEM. It is both epic and bombastically “plane going down” vibes all at the same time. I love the use of Cello. I find it really augments the horrible feeling. I find I can actually picture her or myself in this situation feeling this way at an event and that is the real magic of this song. I feel like I’m actually there.** Come Back Be Here** is so real and raw. I saw this song live at the repTour and somehow… that was everything. GAH has again very lite pop vibes and I like the message of the song a lot. I love the two demos and how they really help to illustrate the songwriting and production process. I remember as an aspiring record producer I analyzed the hell out of those two demos and the album versions haha. **SOG **Acoustic left me feeling relaxed and… inspired (more on that later).

All in all, this album made me feel like a weight had been lifted off my shoulder. Like I was emerging from a car wreck without a scratch. I felt like I had been kicked down on the gravel road and Taylor reached out her hand to my skinned palms to pull me up. I will always cherish this album and the light that it brought me when I really needed it.

UM Interview: What If Elephants

Montreal Indie Pop band What If Elephants are making their stamp on the Canadian music industry with a sound that is very much their own. Formed in 2014, the quartet strikes a delicate balance with their elegant and rousing sound – between accessible pop and deeper, introspective lyrics that lie just below the surface. The bands success includes being a Four times semi-finalists in CBC Searchlight, winners in Canada’s Walk of Fame RBC Emerging Musician Program 2018 and featured both on Canada Destinations and Parcs Canada for promotional campaigns.

Amandah Opoku sat down with Joey Langlois of What If Elephants to talk about the band's new single “Sugar Daddy”, Canadian music influences, growth as a band and more!

Amandah Opoku: Joey, thank you for doing this interview today! Before we kick off please tell our readers about yourself and one random fact people do not know about you. Joey Langlois: Thanks for having me! People may not know that I am a huge fan of sci-fi movies. Namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and anything Christopher Nolan does haha.

Amandah Opoku: If you could describe What If Elephants’ music in three words, what words would you choose and why? Joey Langlois: This one is easy for me to overthink. To keep it simple, I’d say; fun, reflective and accessible. Fun because I know all of us in the band love to groove, so hopefully that’s transmitted haha. Reflective because we put a lot of thought into all the musical and lyrical decisions we make, as well as what we’re saying with a given song. Accessible because it’s fairly easy to digest the musical and lyrical ideas we put out.

Amandah Opoku: What If Elephants is a Canadian Indie Pop band, based in Montreal. Have any Canadian artists influenced you musically? If so, who? Joey Langlois: Hey Rosetta / Tim Baker as projects, have had a significant influence on us as musicians. I’ve personally loved hearing what Justin Bieber, Scott Hellman, Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendes, Valley, Walk Off The Earth, and soooo many more artists have been doing in the past couple years. I’m also influenced by a lot of friends projects; Maya Malkin/Motel Raphael, Bayla, Flara K, and many other we’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.

Amandah Opoku: What If Elephants is a unique name. How did you come up with the name for the band? And what does the name “What If Elephants” mean to you? Joey Langlois: One night, we were chilling with friends and I brought them the problem of choosing a band name. As we tossed around ideas saying; “what about this, what if that?…. what if elephants?”, kinda just popped out. There’s something majestic about that animal. There’s also the idea that we strive to address the elephants in the room - as the expression goes - while still remaining accessible. To be honest, I was looking for a new band name earlier this year haha. For some people it seems like the stars align. For others, there just isn't a name that feels like sums up your ideas.

Amandah Opoku: What inspired you to pursue a music career and create “What If Elephants”? Joey Langlois: For me, it was wanting to create music with positive messages for following generations of youth. When I was a kid, there seemed to be a lack of depth and/or positivity in a lot of the easily accessible music. The way we access music has changed, but there is still a need for more positivity! As a person, I much prefer to collaborate than work alone, so forming a band with friends just made sense. We love spending time together, which I think is key for the long haul.

Amandah Opoku: What is one piece of advice you received since you began pursuing music, that has aided you on your path? Joey Langlois: Everyone has their own story of how things work out. Be honest with your art, work hard, and stick with it as long as you love it. That’s synthesized. It’s hard to pinpoint one piece of advice, all the advice becomes a vibe haha.

Amandah Opoku: What If Elephants is made up of 4 individuals with divergent musical experiences that contribute to your sound. What’s it like writing and working together with your different influences? And how do you incorporate everyone’s ideas into the creation process? Joey Langlois: A lot of our songs had unique processes from one another. We’ve created arrangements in a jam space. Recording session all together. I’ve sent only lyrics for someone else to write chords and melody. Sometimes I arrive with a song I wrote with another songwriter and we arrange, and the list goes on. I generally have a good idea of where I want to go sonically for the production, so often in that stage, I’ll communicate basic ideas musically or verbally and then Justin, Alanna, or Collin will interpret it with their touch and ideas. It really is never the same though - thus far.

Amandah Opoku: 2020 was quite a year for all of us. How has the pandemic affected you as a musician? What have you learned about yourself? Joey Langlois: 2020 has taught me that I need to be a lot nicer to myself with my inner voice. I can be very destructive to myself with my thoughts on my musical pursuits or just life in general. I’m not sure that this is entirely new for me, but 2020 highlighted it for sure. As a musician, I’d say that it opened up time for some collaborations that may not have happened otherwise, which is the other side of the coin which has cost the industry a lot.

Amandah Opoku: What Elephants is releasing a new single “Sugar Daddy” at the end of this month, what inspired the song? Joey Langlois: I’ve never really had that much money, but I’ve never experienced extreme poverty either. The song reflects some of my experience of what happens when you’re in the grind of reaching goals or just paying bills and how it can put stress on a relationship. The song is a reminder to evaluate my priorities when things start to fall apart.

Amandah Opoku: What was the writing and recording process like for “Sugar Daddy”? Joey Langlois: I wrote the first draft of the song in 2018, and my friend Tokyo Speirs contributed lyrics to polish the chorus. The verse underwent two re-writes, after which Mike Bilenki helped refine some of the lyrics as well. As a band we had come up with the core arrangement pretty early on, so the last stage was having our friend Lucas Liberatore co-produce it with us and give the last push on a long, long journey to deliver a polished track. Without him stepping in, we weren’t even sure about finishing it for this EP! Everything was kind-of recording across that whole time span. Some pre, and some post-COVID 19.

Joey Langlois: “Sugar Daddy” features Maya Malkin, how did the collaboration happen? Joey: Maya has been a good friend to me and the band for years. I’ve always admired her skills as an artist and songwriter. Once the verses had been written, somehow to me it just kind of felt like that verse needed a character Maya could totally capture. I won’t say I told you so, but when I hear it, I couldn’t be happier that she leant her voice to this track. Very excited about her solo project as well!

Amandah Opoku: With “Sugar Daddy” out at the end of this month, what can fans expect from What If Elephants next? Joey Langlois: ‘What can we expect next’ is one of the most difficult question to answer these days. What we plan on doing is releasing another single and finally, our new EP between now and May. Making informed decisions with the constantly changing structure of our lives these days seems impossible, but we hope to give the best experience possible as we share what we’ve created, as we adjust to varying constraints. We’re working our butts off on making some cool videos – that’s been my hobby these days. I spend hours setting up weird science experiments just to see if an idea I’ve developed for hours has a chance of working haha.

Amandah Opoku: You (What If Elephants) released your debut EP ‘Getaway’ in 2015, how would you say you’ve grown as an individual and a band? Joey Langlois: Oh my. I think we’ve grown closer to each other. We don’t get to just hang out a ton. Music takes a lot of time, and then each of us has our own life. I feel like we’ve all become more decided on what we enjoy in life, which is helpful to, you know - enjoying life haha. Recently, I’m learning to enjoy the little things that can easily seem like distractions from the important things, but might be opportunities to get insight on something inspiring. Dishes for example. I mostly have avoided dishes for as long as possible and then dreaded them. Now, they’re becoming a moment to listen and learn - be it from a podcast, music, or through talking with Alanna. It’s actually become a bit of a retreat, but not always haha. It would be great to have a dishwasher. That’s one example.

Amandah Opoku: What have you learned since the release of your debut EP, that you wish you knew when you first started this journey? Joey Langlois: Make the music you truly want to make. That first EP is something the I’m grateful for, but I know that at the time, I was very much making music that I thought suited Montreal better than the poppy sound I would otherwise naturally emit. I am still learning that. Learning how to be myself is a constant effort. Whether it’s getting over self-consciousness, or actually just trying to know what I really want. I find that I sometimes get confused between what the world says I should want, and what I actually want. Also, I wish I had started collaborating with other artists and writers so much earlier.

Amandah Opoku: If you had to choose 1 song to send to a listener to introduce them to What If Elephants, what song would you choose and why? Joey Langlois: “Elastic Band” gives a good general overview of our vibe, but I must say that I can’t wait to release new material because I do find it represents where I’m at now, much better.

Amandah Opoku: For new fans who come across your music, what would you like them to take away from your music? Joey Langlois: Hope. We go through so much hardship in life, both practically and relationally. I want people to know they’re not alone and that there are ways we can think and things we can do that can have a positive effect or our own lives and the lives of others. And I hope they also just have a good time jamming to it.

Amandah Opoku: Joey, thank you for sitting down with me! Before we close this interview, is there anything you want to say to your fans and our readers? Joey Langlois: It’s been a pleasure! Please hang in there everyone. Be kind to the people around you (including you!) - both the people who agree with you and the ones that disagree. In the end, it is the culmination of our small gestures towards one another that shape our world. We feel so lucky to be able to create this music, and so thankful that people would take the time to listen and connect with it.

“Sonic! A word with the bird?” Soar quickly had charmed his way into stopping Sonic’s morning run, who rolled his eyes and folded his arms; groaning.

“Mr. Hedgehog, rumors have flown up to my part of the sky and stated that you’ve been running since before the dawn of time! What do you have to say?” He almost jabbed Sonic with the mic, and he had to lunge down to dodge it.

“Hey!” He glared.

“Well said.” Soar pulled the mic back, and then turned to the camera, “Now, for the juicy gossip.” he bounced his eyebrows, as Sonic looked confused.

“W-wait a minute, I thought you just talked about rumors? Why are we going into-OFFPH!”

“Zip it, I haven’t questioned you with intimidating camera lights yet.” Soar shoved his mouth shut before then putting an arm around him and in a flashy manner, raising his head up.

“Ladies and Gentlefolks watching, it’s time for Dropping an Ease!”

Suddenly, Sonic was whisked into a chair, “Hey!” and immediately strapped down from his arms, legs, and braced to the chair.

The chair then squeakily was adjusted to move up with some pump-mechanics and a strobe light flared down on him.

“Wrong light!” someone called, and the light that was blinding Sonic suddenly changed to an interrogation light.

“Better! Roll with it!” the same voice cued and then a hand whipped to a point for Soar to come back on.

He swerved in, happy as ever, before starting up his question again, pulling out a card. “Oh, there’s the lights! Haha! Now then, Sonic…”

“I-I-I don’t think I signed up for this.” Sonic fidgetted.

“Who is…” the man narrowed his eyes, leaning closer to the chair.

“No…no… no!” Sonic kept swishing his head around, before Soar slammed a hand down on its side, stopping Sonic from struggling.

“You’re… Crush!”

“I don’t have one!” Sonic shouted out.

“Don’t lie to me! Lie to them!” Soar then pulled him out of the chair when the locks came automatically off and pulled him up to the camera.

“Honestly! I’m way too cool to have a crush!” Sonic’s face was partly smashed into the camera, as Soar pulled him away, giving him a funny look.

“Really? That’s so… Boring.” he flung Sonic over his shoulder, a humorously blank expression on his face, and Soar looking disappointed.

“Well, that was lame. Sorry, folks! But I guess that means his heart is still up for grabs! Any takers?”

The twins at home squee’d and tapped their feet on the ground.

Dave rolled his eyes, apparently having peeked into his mom’s room to see what she was watching.

Amy.. held her blanket closer to her side, and looked down.

The next day, Sonic was recounting the odd experience, but Amy seemed a bit bitter and was countering everything with sarcasm and ridicule.

“Woah! I’m sorry, but… when did this turn into pick-on-Sonic day!?”

“Last Thursday, but I forgot.” Amy glared back.

“Woah, you two need to chill out.” Tails put up his hands and stepped in-between their odd bickering, before then looking to Sonic with an arrogant glee in his eyes, “I mean. Pfft. We can’t all have love interests.” he gloated, clearly having a crush already.

Sonic groaned again and stomped off.

Once he was gone, shaking his head and growling in anger, she softened up and gripped her heart.

“How can someone NOT have a love interest?!” Amy complained at her group meeting, as the other members looked to each other, and awkwardly back at her. “I mean.. when you spend enough time with a totally cute girl you tend to fall for her, right!? Am I missing something? Could it be her hair? Her cooking? When you literally go out and see a guy-flick WHILE complimenting his manly musk- how can you not get brownie points for that? HOW CAN HE NOT HAVE A CRUSH!?!?”

The rest of the members saw her outburst, and out of fear, nodded and scooted back, all trying to reassure her standpoint or agree in some way to her while they muttered in fright.

Walking home, Sonic dashed right by her, and she mumbled something under her breath about him being a ‘fly-by’ kinda guy, before he came back, seeing her with a smile.

“Oh, hey, Amy, how are ya? Alone? Tonight? Dark night? So am I! haha..?” He suddenly chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his head.

“Yeah. Real chilly.” she hunched forward, sighing. “Sonic… can I ask you something.. personal?”

“Personal? Why Personal? Why do we need to be personal?” he fidgetted, rubbing his arm and looking away, trying to keep up his smile. “Ehem, but on the off chance it’s something cool, what did you have in mind?”

She sighed again, “What.. do we have in common?”

That stopped him real quick, as he looked up to the stars. “W-well..”

“I mean, we both love fighting robots… I guess.” she tilted her head, “And you like to eat and I like making things to eat, so we get along there too..” she gestured a hand out. “I just can’t seem to remember anymore…” she lightly scuffed her hand against a piece of wild wheat, letting the little particles fall where they may as she then dusted her hand off.

Sonic began to reminisce, it was a night like this one too… when he found out…

Amy acting silly and over-the-top, ranting on about the movie they just saw.

“I can’t wait to someday take down a whole evil army!”

“Yeah!” Sonic jumped up, “And I can save a princess!”

“Pfft, please.” she flapped her hand out, “I’m the one saving lazy princesses! You and go and uh… slay a dragon or… something.” she happily balanced on a pole before Sonic spoke up again.

“Hey,… I could save anyone I wanted too! That’s it! A dragon princess!”

“Lame.” Amy did a unique flip, which caught Sonic’s attention. “Woah…” he stared, “Hey, that’s actually kinda cool. And I should know, I’m the epitome of cool~” he flashed his best ‘cool-guy’ finger guns and smile.

She stared a moment before her red cheeks turned away and giggled, sitting down on the horizontal pole. “I guess I just like to be athletic.”

“And that’s totally cool!” Sonic jumped and grabbed the pole, lifting himself up by his arms, showing off. “Hey, Amy. Me and Tails were thinking… you.. you could be pretty cool if you were a hero, ya know.”

She gave him an odd look, “What do you mean? Could?” she teased, lifting her head before ducking it and seeming to blush again, but he didn’t notice, looking up at the night sky.

“I mean.. the first time I met you, you stormed through our door and demanded to be apart of our gang, right?”

“Yeah, so?”

“Well, you made it! You took down Eggman’s robots and even out swung Knuckles! It could be fun, you know? Even if you are a girl…” he looked away, growing strangely shy.

He didn’t seem to mean coming off any particular way, but Amy puffed up her childish cheeks and went to get him.

“And what is that suppose to- ah..aHHH!!!” she lost her balance! Falling fast before Sonic impulsively moved and grabbed her hand.

“Hang on!”

He tried to pull her up, as she watched with amazed eyes before their fingers slipped.

“Amy!”

“Sooooniicc!”

He dashed down in a quick spin-ball like way, ratcheting off of trees and a building nearby to then grab her in his arms.

“Got’cha!”

The two stared in wide-eyed enchantment at one another…

Sonic’s heart was racing, but he figured it was from all the excitement of the daring rescue.

He had never been this close to a girl before…

Amy stumbled out of his arms, growing increasingly more embarrassed. “T-there! You saved a girl! Way to go!” she seemed to aggressively speak the words out, but Sonic took it literally.

As she adjusted her dress and patted her flaming cheeks, he looked at his hands, and then smiled gleefully up at her.

“I did!”

She turned around.

“I totally just saved your life! Ha! You must think I’m the coolest dude around now!”

She couldn’t help it. She turned with a gentle smile, “You were cool without the heroics… Sonic.”

He paused a moment, watching her expression and feeling something stir once again to be closer to her again.

She batted her eyes away, a cute touch, before closing her eyes and tilting her head in a way that made her hair sway with the gesture.

“I always thought of you as my hero.”

Then, something odd and strange happened to him.

He pouted, feeling embarrassed as his face brightened and he angrily wagged his arms about.

“BUT THAT’S NOT FAIR!” he hollered, “I’m supposed to be cooler than that!”

What he never admitted, was that the heat that seemed to come from anger… was from being so touched by such a strong, graceful girl considering him her hero before he officially saved her.

Sonic shook his head from this thoughts, “I always thought we had saving people in common.” he smiled gently, not expecting her to catch on to his inside-reference.

“Hehe, yeah… We’ve always loved saving the world.” She smiled then, turning back to him.

She put her hands behind her back, “You know, we’ve saved it so many times!”

“It’s been fun.” his voice lowered, his eyes lingering on her younger self, the image in his mind.. the feeling of holding her again..

“Yeah, well… I guess it never gets old, huh?” she turned to look back at the stars, not even noticing him staring sweetly to her.

He tilted his head, “No.” he tenderly closed his eyes and looked down. “I guess not.”

He forgot the world for a second…

He’d rather save her again…

If ever she got into trouble again, she was too careful these days…

Too good at saving others and herself.

She suddenly saw something and went over to get it, before tripping and Sonic opening his eyes, almost too late to notice.

Could it be..?

His heart raced, he wondered if fate had heard him before Amy caught herself and balanced her landing with a beautiful roll and poise.

“Ta-dah! haha! No girls’ complete unless she can catch herself, huh Sonic?” she cheekily smiled behind to him, grinning wildly and hoping to make him feel impressed.

However… from his point-of-view… it was cruel. Oh so mockingly cutely..

His hand was still inches from reaching out for her…

He withdrew it back and folded his arms, turning grumpy.

“Yeah,.. swell.” he pouted. “Call me old fashion… but I liked it when heroes saved princesses…” he muttered out.

Amy blushed and looked away. “Y-yeah… I guess that’s just you.”

He frowned harder.

“But…” she giggled and kicked the ground, “Nowadays… girls need a new kind of hero..” she skipped on, and in curiosity, Sonic followed after her.

“Like what?” Sonic stated, rounding to her side. “What kind of hero do girls want?”

“Not want.” Amy stated, winking at him and turning, “Need.”

He pursued, “Y-yeah, but you didn’t answer me!”

“So persistent~ Why are you trying to find out what girls need in a man, Sonic?”

“You said hero.”

“Fine. I’ll tell you.” she put her hands on her hips and spun around. “Girls need a hero who saves them from the things that aren’t attacking them on the outside.”

He paused, not understanding.

“…A princess…” she touched her heart, looking suddenly sorrowful as she peered down at it. “Needs someone who will save her tears…”

She walked on, and Sonic found himself falling in love all over again…

Sonic then deeply believed that it was an inexcusable sin to make girls cry.

“Oh no...” he shuttered. “I think I did lie.. But not to them.” she was already out of earshot.

“...But to her.”

He didn’t want to save princesses.

He wanted to save the one girl that saw him as a hero... before he ever was one.

The drunkard gets scared and scampers away

You’re flattered Zenny protected you, but you assure him he didn’t have to do that

And he’s just like:

Baehee may be a little stoic, but due to her insecurities, she’d be worried about you finding someone better

One thing that bugs me is when people talk about others in a rude way for being “strange”,”weird”,”ugly” (nothing I’ve heard personally for myself, I’m just talking on a neutral standard level here), etc. and the people saying these things wear some sort of shirt saying “I’m just a type of crazy” sorta shirt. Like, you’re saying all these rude things, but you wear those shirts yet don’t even know what it’s reflecting on just being “weird is the new cool” in a sense. Listen Review of Future’s ‘High Off Life’ by djbooth.net

Future’s ‘High Off Life’ is a familiar journey through a terrain of toxic lust, sleepless paranoia, wealthy boasts, and deep-seated trauma.

Hip-hop recognizes Future, born Nayvadius Wilburn, as a multi-Platinum, GRAMMY-winning trendsetter who doesn’t follow anyone’s rules but his own. Instead of working inside the industry, Future works around it, doing as he pleases from a mountain top built upon his tireless work ethic. Consistency, as much as talent, made him into a superstar.

So it should come as no surprise that Future decided to release his eighth studio album, High Off Life, during a pandemic. While some of his peers are waiting until the storm passes, Future moves forward, releasing new music as if unphased by the world’s tragic predicament. With features from Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, Drake, DaBaby, and more, High Off Life is the biggest release of the week, but will it be the best?

In usual 1-Listen album review fashion, the rules are the same: no skipping, no fast-forwarding, no rewinding, and no stopping. Each song will receive my gut reaction from start to finish.

1. “Trapped In The Sun”

The atmosphere feels like the beginning of an epic tale of a man turned monster. “That yellow Lambo outside.” Boss talk. Future makes trap music sound like Greek mythology. The bounce is infectious. The production could score a remake of Scarface. Brags on top of brags. Future is a super-villain, and he does not hide it. Future is in his mixtape bag. He has mastered “Former drug dealer who made it out of that life” lyricism, but I heard this story before. Strong start. Will revisit.

2. “HiTek Tek”

Let’s see where he goes. Banger! ATL Jacob tag! The bass would devour a weaker rapper. Future is like a toxic Energizer Bunny who loves any beat that makes him sound like he’s in the center of chaos. “I started off po, but not no mo.” He’s flexing like the rich rapper that he is. A lot of tricks. Future still finds the fun in rap. ATL Jacob is a beast. This song is full of sound effects. I laughed at him bragging about having the Glock on him while sitting courtside. Why sir? Why do you have that on you? The production reminds me of What A Time To Be Alive. This one is good.

3. “Touch The Sky”

Southside production. This is good. “Off the top rope, Andre the Giant.” Future is full of wealthy stunts. Is he one of the best braggers in rap? [Editor’s Note: Yes.] I’m loving this. “I can tell she got a man by the way she text me, nigga.” This man is a monster. “I perform with my drum” is a robust double entendre. Yeah, we have a keeper. I’m a sucker for Future and Southside collabs. These two are mad scientists wreaking havoc. Doctor Robotnik meets Shadow the Hedgehog. Future is the Shadow of hip-hop, and Drake is his Sonic.

4. “Solitaries” feat. Travis Scott

How many collabs does Future have with Travis? Wheezy tag! Shouts to Lil Wayne, lol. Future sounds lively. This man just said, “Coronavirus diamonds you can catch the flu.” Future is his name, outlandish is his language. Travis is getting to it. Not mad, but not in love either. I would have loved it on Travis’ Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. Skip.

5. “Ridin Strikes”

Every Future album is a reminder that he’s richer than you. “Ridin Strikes” sounds like you should play it in a tank. He’s getting some bars off. My only issue with Future is, the subject matter starts to get stale. He overstuffs his album to the point where I crave a change. Can he hear my thoughts? The beat just switched. A news clip. Oh, this is something. I would watch Future in a bank robber movie. Give him a role like T.I in Takers. Alright, I’ll keep this one.

6. “One of My”

A simple build-up. He’s taking his time with this one. Yep! His vocal texture is the perfect tone for a ghost story. “One of my niggas ain’t got no soul.” YEP! We have the one. Future hangs out with some terrible guys. I wish we had a way of seeing a person’s karma. If Future lives his raps, I know his karma is in dangerous reds. I wish this were the intro. Imagine a Future styled GKMC; that was probably Monster. “One of my niggas ain’t got no soul” is the spookiest lyric of 2020.

7. “Posted With My Demons”

This beat sounds like a bottomless pit of despair. This is not what Tory Lanez meant by Demon Time. Future jumps on haunted beats and tells you about the monsters underneath your bed. High Off Life has been mostly about his past trails and his present riches. “All this dope I sold.” There’s a lot of darkness in this man’s heart. He looks like such a wholesome man. “If the streets don’t kill you first, it will make you strong.” Future makes trap music; real trap music; music that represents the inescapable cycle of darkness that will corrupt saints and cause angels to fall from heaven. Keeper.

8. “Hard To Choose One”

If you like trap Future, this album is for you. Future’s delivery sounds slower than usual. I wonder if that’s because Lil Baby raps so fast. The two have similar perspectives, except Lil Baby has a good heart. He’s practically the Little Mermaid compared to Future’s Ursula. Don’t mind me; I have animation on the brain. Love his flow here. “Load up my rifle; I don’t go to bed.” Future is haunted by something, and no one can convince me otherwise. The last three songs have all been killer.

9. “Trillionaire” feat. YoungBoy Never Broke Again

Jeff Bezos is going to make this song his ringtone. Youngboy is taking advantage of all the attention he’s garnished over the last year or so. Future aligns himself with young rappers who compliment him. Future is singing his heart out. I kind of missed him singing. Youngboy is singing, too. This is a started from the bottom rap ballad. “Trillionaire” might be the breakout record. YouTube views are going to be crazy.

10. “Harlem Shake” feat. Young Thug

I have a good feeling about this one. “Choppa make them do the Harlem Shake.” Future loves to rap over beats that sound like they would play in a strip club with a low health score. Just filthy. Thugger! I wish the tempo were a few BPM faster. Thug was cool. He didn’t explode as I expected him. That was mild. A cherry bomb, not an atomic one. Eh, not in love. Feels lazy. Skip.

11. “Up The River”

Maybe it’s because I’ve been in the house, but High Off Life sounds like an outside album, not a quarantine album. Future didn’t make this album for a world socially distancing. Okay! We got some heartfelt reflection. The super-villain dropped the act. Nevermind. “Got no room for mistakes.” Can someone please put Future in the studio with Mir Fontane. Those two would make something crazy. I hope the second half leans into this direction.

12. “Pray For A Key”

Out of all the things Future could pray for, he prays for a “key.” Super-villain. There’s some premium trauma on this album, word to my boy Michael Penn II. “I been dying to go berserk.” Not a bad record. I like the production. The synth in the background is a nice touch. “Used to pray for a key.” This is… Cool.

13. “Too Comfortable”

“Bitch, don’t get too comfortable.” Sheesh, that’s how you feel, man? I wish we could get a For The Love of Future reality show. That would be premium television. We got something here. I like the production; I also like the tone, flow, and energy. Future is such a subtle talker. No matter what he says, it never sounds as malicious as the words are. Who made this beat? It’s gorgeous. [Editor’s Note: Southside.] Oh, he just mentioned his son. He’s opening up. Dang, that was short-lived. What is Future’s real-life like? He’s a mystery. It’s part of the allure. “Better not get too comfortable.” I’ll keep this one—the most personal song on the album. Well, besides the one about his friends with no souls.

14. “All Bad” feat. Lil Uzi Vert

I love how shameless Future is. He doesn’t care if you judge him; his life is his life. Uzi brought a change in sound. All his beats sound like they belong in video games. Gotta love the colorfulness. “I’m from a whole different world.” I believe it, sir. “My nickname is Yung Spendit.” That’s a solid nickname haha. This one is a trampoline. I love that Uzi is back to releasing music. He’s a walking cartoon. “I am way smarter than you.” Baby Pluto and Pluto Sr. are a good combo. “If I hang up, don’t call back at all.” Future is a rap star who doesn’t dim his light for no one. I wonder when was the last time he apologized to someone. Probably never. You don’t become a superstar apologizing.

15. “Outer Space Bih”

The keys are gorgeous. Future has a solid beat selection. They’re distinctive, but only a handful stand out. This one does. “I’m a driving drug store.” I see “Outer Space Bih” being a favorite. “I got two G Wagons in my ears.” Future stunts are becoming more impressive. I see why he and Drake get along. They like to make us all feel poor. Keeper.

16. “Accepting My Flaws”

This title sounds like an outro. Who is that? Dang, someone is ranting. I wonder how Future would acknowledge his flaws? 808 Mafia tag. Yes! Man, this sounds like driving a hellcat in hell. Feels like a Future classic. HE’S GETTING TO IT. “Drink my blood, baby, we going digital.” I hope we never find out what Future does in his private life. I know it’s nothing good. Two minutes in and I’m ready to run it back. He’s on a roller-coaster. “Fuck them all, we don’t show them sympathy.” So far, not one mention of his flaws. I love it. “Lord forgive me I been on a rampage.” He has been fighting his demons; he’s been fighting the cup. Oh man, this is good. Easily the best record on the album.

17. “Life Is Good” feat. Drake

I like this record. It’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in rap form. “Baby got an ego twice the size of the crib.” Can’t imagine a woman with an ego bigger than Drake’s mansion. I can’t believe these two dropped this song in January, and life immediately got bad. How Future catches the beat switch is something serious. Lyrically, he sounds so alive. “Life Is Good” is one of his best rap performances on the album. He gets into a completely different zone when Drake is featured. Rap would sound completely different without Future. “Life Is Good” is a keeper, but this album doesn’t need to continue.

18. “Last Name” feat. Lil Durk

“I take care of families.” Oh, wait, we have something. This is sweet. Melodic Future bleeding it out. “I can’t go to sleep, I’m too paranoid.” I guess that’s why he wants a Draco in London. Being that famous can’t be fun. Lil Durk sounds great. Pray that all rappers get the healing they deserve. So many great songs inspired by deep sorrow. “Laughing to the bank got me running wild.” Future and Durk tag-teaming the last verse was sweet.

19. “Tycoon”

One day, Future will realize that we don’t need 21 songs. “Took that Draco on a PJ, I ain’t playing.” Man, this album is a paranoia parade. As much as I like confessional Future, I feel like he told us everything we needed to know about his life in the streets on “Sorry.” “Tycoon” is a good song, but this deep into the album, it’s not hitting as hard as it should. Bloated albums do a disservice to the deeper cuts. Admittedly, bloated albums are terrible for 1 Listens. It’s like being held hostage in a studio. [Editor’s Note: I apologize.] Okay, that was a little dramatic. Good record, though.

20. “100 Shooters” feat. Meek Mill & Doe Boy

Tay Keith tag! Okay! These hi-hats just woke me up. A nice Nas/Belly reference. Meek! I haven’t played any Meek lately. Hearing his voice is refreshing. I could use a new Meek project. [Editor’s Note: He’s working on one.] Man, Future does not care about these ladies’ broken hearts. I’m sure he breaks up with women just to rap about it. This is a good record. I would’ve liked this song earlier in the album. Doe Boy! This is a solid performance. I would like on a gym playlist. Nothing says leg day like having 100 shooters outside.

21. “Life Is Good [Remix]” feat. Drake, DaBaby & Lil Baby

This album is longer than the wait at Red Lobster on Mother’s Day. “Help me fight my demons.” At what age should you be expected to deal with your demons alone? I didn’t mean that. We all deserve a shoulder to lean on, no matter your age. I can’t wait until Future drops a gospel redemption album. It’s going to be glorious. “Halloween gang in this bitch.” Why is Drake credited on this? My man did not come back as a guest star. The beat switch is meaner than a classroom of toddlers on silent lunch. DaBaby! Such a great rap voice. He found a good pocket. He delivered a strong guest verse. “You a throwaway, baby, it’s okay.” Man, rappers can be so savage. Lil Baby! The pure-hearted gangster. His flow is something else—a rapping roadrunner. I hope Lil Baby will always rap like the cops are about to raid the studio, and he has to finish the verse before they kick the door in.

Final (First Listen) Thoughts on Future’s High Off Life

Future’s High Off Life is a journey through a terrain of toxic lust, sleepless paranoia, wealthy boasts, and deep-seated trauma. Mostly, it’s another chapter from the book of Nayvadius. We have a familiar gospel on our hands.

High Off Life features Future giving the people what they expect. We have a hopeless romantic who relishes the ghosts of his past and refuses to look away from the prosperity of his present. The 36-year-old rap innovator delivers another long-winded recollection of guns, glory, girls, drugs, and demons with suave flows and hypnotic cadences over hard-hitting production from the usual suspects.

To his credit, Future understands that he is a roller-coaster. The kind of artist who follows a designated path of loops, twists, and turns without losing the rush that makes each ride thrilling. High Off Life adds 21 new attractions to his dark, twisted theme park. It’s just that, we’ve all been here before.

Hiveswap Episode 1 Reaction Part 3: Joey’s room? More like our eternal playground!

Before we start again, I had a random thought about something I learned yesterday.

So, Joey implied she doesn't really have any friends. But on the other hand, she also seemed to imply that she has a boyfriend when examnining the Clarissa poster. If she's so bad at making friends, then I'm really curious to learn more about her boyfriend!

I mean, assuming I understood it correctly, perhaps I misunderstood it and she doesn't actually have a boyfriend. :P

Anyway, day 3 of playing! It's weekend and 4:50 PM right now, let's see how much we'll get done today!

First of all we're gonna check out the closet, then try out some more combinations of using items on other items, there's a bunch of those that we can still try out, with the tap shoes, diary key and Cherub key. Afterwards, we'll probably examine the computer, window, walkie talkie and doors and see if we can advance!

Oooooh, nice, we can actually open the closet!

A bunch of puzzles and other neat stuff in there... including a Simon Says game! I saw that in concept art not too long ago, perhaps there'll be something special about it? ...And I'm not just saying that because it seems to be blinking like hell. :P

Oh boy... we can CHALLENGE the Simon Says game. Is this gonna be a mini-game? xD

plainWonder has a cool theory that Joey might use the batteries of this game for her walkie talkie! After having seen it in concept art I first thought she'd get batteries out of that radio, but perhaps this is a more likely theory!

...Pfff, so she even USED the batties of the walkie talkie ON the Simon Says game in the first place, hahaha.

GREEN BUTTON ISN'T WORKING, looooooool. Hahaha, it was worth the try/nostalgia.

Nope, can't use the batteries on the cherub key, obviously. :P

Oh my god I love all those ridiculous comments when combining items with the ballerina poster. Combining the diary key with it gives some pretty cool insight though, nice.

It reminds me of how Poppop also met some interesting and famous people in his life and became one himself. And B2 Dave and B2 Rose too of course, like plainWonder pointed out! They knew some famous people too (and were famous themselves).

The Homestuck/Hiveswap Kids sure do have a lot famous family members or family members knowing famous people, haha.

That's really interesting to know that she's already been up there, meaning she might also be aware of the mysterious device up there that Joey will eventually use to go to Alternia!

Batteries && Sir Bappy Pawswatter ==> Oh dear god, I didn't expect those things ran on batteries. Good thing Jade never found out about that, or at least already removed the batteries. xD

Suddenly realized we could also combine items with the ceiling!

Cherub Key && Ceiling ==> ...That is not the right description. xD Looks like that's the description for Cherub Key && Walkie Talkie.

Diary Key && Ceiling ==> Oh wow, so Ms. Claire painted that when Joey was still a baby! ...Come to think of it, how old was Joey when Ms. Claire died? Was she still a baby when Ms. Claire died or not? Because if she was, I think there's a high chance Jude is NOT her son, which is an idea I've been playing around with already (what with their different surnames and all). If so, the question beckons who IS his mother.

Cherub Key && Animal posters ==> That is indeed the cutest idea ever. Even if they don't get any actual gifts from them, at least they still get some nice licks from them. :P

Batteries && Wardrobe ==> Indeed, and her wardrobe doesn't need batteries either, seeing as it's not a Wardrobifier. :P

Cherub Key && Junior Veterinarian Medkit ==> NO SHIT that it doesn't work like that. xD

Tap Dancer && Junior Veterinarian Medkit ==> Oh okay, so she IS still debating on which profession she would like to have in the future! I wonder if her experiences in this adventure will help her make a choice? Maybe... maybe we'll even be able to INFLUENCE which one she will eventually choose? Like, I could see it happening that she'll take care of Dammek's Lusus at some point perhaps, maybe it will get hurt or something. Not sure how her dancing skills would come into play (other than as fighting skill), but it could happen!

Or maybe it will even depend on how you play the game in general: do you take a more aggressive stance against enemies, fighting them with your dance skills, or do you instead go for a more passive route and take care of the wounded and such?

That would be interesting!

Diary Key && Puppy Surprise ==> Oh wow, we can put the diary key back into the Puppy Surprise! That makes me seem like that is indeed what happened after we tried writing into the diary last time. Hehe, let's retrieve the key for now and try that out in a few seconds.

So, the Diary Key indeed went back into the Puppy Surprise! But sadly, we can't retrieve the key anymore afterwards.

I guess like how all Kids and Trolls seem to grow up with no or only one Guardian around.

Cherub Key && Wizard glass ball ==> Haha, that reminds me of all the discussions in Homestuck on what is or isn't magic, and also the magical properties of wizards.

Tap shoes && Wizard glass ball ==> I love how there are so many combinations of the tap shoes with another item that cause her to just make a dance.

Tap shoes && Oven ==> Lukewarm-steppin', PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Batteries & Skaianet Calendar ==> OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH, so THAT is the context of that picture! So apparently Skaianet isn't "just" a science company that was sneakily behind Sburb, but is actually a videogame company!!! Huh, I definitely didn't expect that! Now that picture suddenly makes a lot more sense, with them all being videogame figures.

Also, that gives a whole new context to Mom working for Skaianet! I always figured she just did it because she was into science, but the fact that they're actually actively making videogames makes a lot of sense too because we know Roxy is so into videogames!!!

That's definitely a cool mystery that just got solved!

I guess it makes sense because she's probably... somewhere around 20 years old? Give or take a few years in either direction.

And like plainWonder said, that gives a REALLY interesting deadline for Joey to either return from Alternia or for Mom to notice something's up! Because 11/11/1994 is a Friday evening, which means that in the morning of the next day Mom should be coming!!!

Hmm... will Joey come back so quickly from Alternia??? Or are we going to get a surprise appearance from Mom in Hauntswitch or maybe even the end of Hiveswap???

Oh god I'd be so excited if she will physically appear in one of these games!

Which kinda surprises me that we "have" to do this, I thought I saw in concept art somewhere that she had the batteries in her inventory somewhere else? So can we remove them from the walkie talkie again or something?

Also, that bush there. It looks a lot like the snakey monster chasing Joey! That's also really suspicious, are these monsters "known" around here? Or at least by Grandpa or something?

I love how he just becomes increasinly meta as we keep on clicking it, kind of like in [S] YOU THERE BOY with continuously clicking on John.

And he just keeps on sounding more like the in-comic Andrew, hahahaha.

But... plainWonder's right. As we go on, he progressively sounds more and more like Doc Scratch. I mean... allotting time to 'talk' to us, being smug about being intelligent... This is kind of suspicious.

I highly doubt it's Doc Scratch, that it's just meant to be the narrator, but... HMMMMMMMMM

Okay, we've reached the end of it. Now it just keeps on repeating that the hint function is unavailable. xD

I'm pretty happy that we've just about finished up with the actual introduction of the game (LOL, that took long enough, like, 6-7 hours of gameplay so far holy shit), and can now get diving into more of the actual plot. xD
