The issue with Lenkov shows (I've got many) and the relationships is that they took place off screen and we were expected to feel connections?

In Hawaii Five-0 Steve and Cath - when we first meet her, she's doing a favour for Steve and the idea is that they're kind of together but not. All the while, there is already a female lead in the show, a series regular in this case Kono, who you could see breadcrumbs to a relationship with Steve, kick ass, strong character, strong female who wouldn't have been diminished in this relationship. Instead, Kono ends up in a relationship with Adam, who duct tapes her to a chair which she immediately forgives, an action that goes against everything we knew about her.

Or in MacGyver when Mac and Desi have a whole ass relationship off screen between seasons, during a time jump and again, we're expected to be invested? You don't show us the awkward get together, the relationship building and ultmiate falling apart to give us the level of discomfort between them when we see them at the start of a new season. Similarly, we already have a regular female character in the show who would be a good match for Mac who throughout the many (although not enough) seasons we can see a connection build, Riley Davis, super smart, quick on her feet, genius in ways that Mac isn't. A brilliant balance already in the show. And turns Desi into something she isn't and shouldn't have ever been.

Lenkov wasted the natural chemistry of his cast and characters and frankly, I'll never forgive him for that (and some other things.)

At least Higgins and Magnum are getting a shot.

Review of X-Over Event - Hawaii Five-0 & Magnum PI

OMG I loved it so much.

That’s it. That’s the whole review!

No, but seriously, both of these were super enjoyable to watch. I haven’t watched Hawaii Five-0 since like season 1 but this kinda made me want to (which is the point of crossovers I know, so success!) and the Magnum episode!!!

Can we just, like, appreciate the Miggy in this one? Like if I didn’t ship it so hard, I’d probably be (very annoyedly) throwing up rainbows from how many Magnum/Higgins moments there are and how freaking sweet and amazing they were! 

First, we get the opening scene which is just adorable!

And then the end? 

For a second I was all “oh no way, they’re gonna dance too?” but then TC is all “Wanna dance Higgy baby?” and it’s just even better than if she’d danced with Magnum because of the looks and the smiling. 

And this! the way he looks at her and...I’m just gonna re-watch that scene like 100 times.

I loved (in no particular order)

The phone call.

Magnum being all proud “she’s a ex-spy”.

All the Miggy arguments.

All the Miggy looks.

Rick asking Nyssa al Ghul out...I mean Quinn Liu (also, how is Katrina Law so freaking stunning, it’s not fair to the rest of the world). 

As illustrated above - the blanket opening scene, golden, and the end scene at La Mariana. Especially Higgins being all “I think you’re even more awesome than McGarrett“ and the looks there. They were amazing.

Higgins not being able to hack into something for once. Because she might be awesome but she’s not all-powerful (and she shouldn’t have to be.)

Gordon actually getting to be in the know! Yes with the trust!

Higgy being all shary and encouraging with the whole “I’d still would have done it all over with Richard” despite him dying, which I think shows she’s realizing even with the hurt there is a lot of good stuff and is moving on.

Miggy office romance talk at the end, also amazing.

Spill the tea! (Higgins not knowing what this meant felt kind of silly but it was so adorable “because I’m British?” that I just have to put it on the good-list.)

How Higgins and Quinn just stood around when they realized they were about to be shot when the SD-card was opened without doing anything. I feel Higgins with her spy training should have gone “our backup just checked the van he’s not there. give us the card back” for a distraction and Magnum could have done his kick-ass stuff. IDK, all of them should have done something more than just stand around and wait to be shot.

The Adam Noshimuri character being thrown in there. I get it made sense for Hawaii Five-o viewers but that kind of threw me a little, even with the intro in the beginning.

Felt like I missed something with the girls not actually getting McGarrett text that the CIA were coming at the start of the Magnum episode.

How they just got rid off the whole Five-o gang. Couldn’t they have done one or two scenes? I get that the mains there have fancy contracts and stuff but come on, but seriously? I’m feeling a little salty about it.

Overall I just enjoyed the heck out of both of these and I can’t wait to re-watch them!

Magnum PI continues to set the standard for remakes

We’re now two episodes into the second season the Magnum PI remake and I continue to be impressed by how it’s managed to recapture the feeling and spirit of the original series, while having its own voice. Of course remakes of old shows are nothing new - in fact, Magnum is just the latest in a series of remakes set in the same fictional universe that currently includes Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver (and the shows are also connected to the JAG/NCIS franchise). But while Hawaii Five-0 hasn’t really inspired me (I find it too violent for my taste) and I just can’t watch a version of MacGyver without Richard Dean Anderson, my hesitancy about Magnum was short lived. While they are utterly different shows, the only other remake to really appeal to me as a lover of the original was Battlestar Galactica.

Although I wasn’t sure at first if it would work, the decision to reimagine John Hillerman’s character of Higgins and cast Perdita Weeks in the role has I think been a major reason for the show finding it own voice. Wisely, the writers created a brand-new character in Juliet Higgins rather than just trying to copy-and-paste over Hillerman’s version. This new character has a completely unique backstory, being a former spy, and in the very first couple of episodes they confirmed that they won’t be pulling the same series-finale stunt they pulled with the original Higgins where they threw 8 years of canon out the window and contradicted an entire episode along the way. (I won’t spoil the surprise as I know there are people who have been introduced to the original thanks to the remake. The twist is easy to find online). I do have a little bias from the fact Perdita is one of Jenna Coleman’s best friends and has often appeared on Jenna’s Instagram.

Jay Hernandez took a few episodes to warm up to, but he is Magnum (a new Magnum, not a replacement for Tom Selleck). People who refuse to watch because he’s not Selleck and doesn’t have a mustache should give him a chance. One of the early episodes included a sight gag showing why Jay’s version is clean-shaven.

The rest of the cast are terrific. The actors who play TC and Rick and new characters Det. Katsamoto and Kumu have amazing chemistry.

The show in its second season has really cemented the Remington Steele vibe I felt in year one. This is a positive consequence of creating a “will they or won’t they” semi-romantic dynamic between Magnum and Higgins that was not present in the original. The show has given shippers a lot to work with, even down to borrowing the “longing glance when the other isn’t looking” dynamic  perfected with the Twelfth Doctor and Clara, and the first two episodes of Season 2 have also had “everyone knows they’re crazy about each other - except Magnum and Higgins” moments that are too obvious to be just random fanservice. There’s a danger here - Remington Steele and its spiritual cousin, Moonlighting, not to mention X-Files and I could name several other examples, collapsed when the romantic tension was broken. Magnum and Higgins are a couple and should be a couple, yes. The show is clearly aiming this direction (that’s not supposition or wishful thinking - they’ve got a big neon arrow pointing to it) ... just not yet.

The most recent episode featured something else that I love about the show. It honours its history. Of course this isn’t unusual for remakes, but still, having Roger Moseley (TC in the original) appear in a cameo last year was fun, but now they have introduced Larry Manetti (the original Rick) as a recurring character - not only that, he is the same character he plays on the Hawaii Five-0 remake, so there’s continuity of canon. Sadly, John Hillerman is no longer with us (I’m hoping we see a photo of Juliet Higgin’s father some day and they use a photo of Hillerman when we do), but everyone now has their eyes as to whether Tom Selleck will appear. There is only one character he could play in the show - the never-seen Robin Masters (the man who bankrolls Magnum, owns the estate Thomas is based out of, and adapts Magnum’s adventures as novels). We’ll see if that happens. He currently stars in another CBS series so it would be for the same company (they could have him appear as his Blue Bloods character, too, and save Robin for someone else, I suppose).

Magnum PI is not for everyone. It’s a very light-hearted crime show, which isn’t an in thing anymore, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. Most of the mysteries are easy to figure out. And the series has yet to have its “Have you seen the sun rise” moment (those who know the original know exactly what I’m talking about). But that doesn’t matter. What makes this show work are the characters and the chemistry between the actors, with the Thomas-Juliet relationship the show’s heart and soul. To their immense credit, the makers of Magnum appear to realize this too.
