oh btw this is the wild bunch of misfit witches i hang out with, if anyone is curious
we're a diverse group with many different traditions and we like to combine them for our celebrations, both in public and in private. we are fiercely pro-LGBT+, antidiscrimination, and neurodiversity-affirming.
if you're around Utah and you wanna attend a Beltane or Samhain ritual, tune in for a monthly pagan Sunday service based on the Wheel of the Year (which we livestream on fb for the general public), or just get to know/hang out with some really awesome folks, check us out!

I have been in a terrible reading slump and am looking for books to pull me out. Do you have any recommendations?
FRANCES HARDINGE. cool heroines, middle grade level that adults will love, cool fantasy premises, perfect balance of quality & light read. my faves are deeplight + cuckoo song.
If you don't like fantasy then my beloved herotic stories for punjabi widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. everyone should read it I'm not kidding I love it to bits.
more ideas:
beach reads!! these are all fun engaging types of books:
fantasy: a deadly education by naomi novik
thriller: the it girl by ruth ware
thriller but comedy: Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
horror: My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. the coldest girl in cooldown by Holly Black
litfic: Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
romance (F/F): Hotshot byClare Lydon
romance (het): Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho (contemporary). Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore (historical). Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood (YA)
prose so good you want to eat it. (words are pretty but the book is a bit heavier to stomach! depends on your tastes)
matrix by lauren groff. into the woods by tana french. my dark vanessa by kate elizabeth russell. The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker.
engaging nonfiction
humble pi by matt parker. the code book by simon sigh. if you wanna go heavier, I really loved Black AF History by Michael Harriot
shorter stuff
short stories! I've loved everything I've read that was short by Tamsyn Muir, but the collection Heiresses of Rust (2016) she's featured in also has an incredible mix of short stories by various authors. the theme is lesbian fiction. another sff author I love for short stories is James Tiptree
tiny books! chaptered but on the shorter side. Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. Houston, Houston, Do You Read? by James Tiptree Jr. One Day All This Will Be Yours by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson

Nalini Chat w/ Ali Hazelwood
Some highlights from her chat today with Ali hosted by East City Bookshop.
she's currently writing the next Guild Hunter novel
Q: what is special about this book in the series for you? A: This book is really about family and I think it's been a big thing throughout the series from the beginning. it felt like the right time in the timeline for this book to happen. Prepare to be emotionally destroyed. She cried writing it. It's a book about family and who we are and those who make us and influence our lives. There is joy! Really important book int he series because it closes a lot of loops which is important to move forward.
Q: what is it like to go back to raphael and elena after writing books about other characters? A: It doesn't feel weird going back because they're always part of the books regardless of who we're focusing on. It's this massive world and we just went and visited someone else. -they're the heart of the series. No matter where else we go they exist and are part of it in some way.
Q: When you weren't writing them did you miss them? A: She does. The newsletter shorts are because she does miss them and writes for them when it's not their book. "I write my own fan fiction"
Q: Shorts in a collection? A: yeah, if there was enough desire for it. She would go ahead and do that. She'll add it to the to do list and poll people if there is a want.
Q: What does she feel about werewolves lore in general since they're closest to changelings. A: Would have been writing werewolf fan fiction had she known about it online. The only thing she didn't like was that they don't want to be werewolves.
Q: What you have written has influenced a generation of writters, how does that feel knowing you have been so impactful on the lives of so many people? A: It's weird. It's a continuous timeline and you just go book to book without realizing the passage of time. Didn't set in until she got her 20 years in the publishing industry anniversary. It's startling. Her hero is Anne Mcarthy and for someone to think of her in the same way is wild.
Q: is it difficult to write a highly anticipated character/pairing? A: She's obsessed with them already for a while before introducing them. You really have to go into your own head and block out what people are expecting. That's the only way it'll be her own.
Q: Does it ever happen that you annoy yourself with your slowburn? A: "I do and then i write it and release it 10 years later."
Q: Is Raphael's father going to come back? A: "Well, he's dead."
Q: who is your favorite young character? A: Really like writing all the kids. They're hilarious and fun to write. Really loves Izzy and wants to protect him the little baby angel. Curious to see who he'll be when he gets older with all these influences around him.
-Thought she would write a book about Elena's sisters but they appear a lot in Lineage and it closes up their stories enough that there is resolution and she won't be writing their own story.
-The series is slowly (slowly) wrapping up. It was always based around elena and raphael and it should end where it makes sense. not drag it out
-Possible she might do some novellas because there are things that can't be wrapped up in the books. Will absolutely keep writing shorts and adding them to the newsletter.
Q: Is there another series in the works for when GH is over? A: Has an idea for a book she'd like to write but won't know if it's a series until it's written.
Q: Are we getting more of Illium and Aodhan? A: It's the next book. it's a different book than Light. There's still some emotional stuff to take care of. There are also major changes in the world. get to see more of the other characters with them. The cover should match the Light one, complimentary.

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS. ↳ quotes from the love hypothesis by ali hazelwood. some quotes have been edited for clarity or usability.
"carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man."
"i'm going to kill you."
"i wish you could see yourself the way i see you."
"i'm starting to wonder if this is what being in love is. being okay with ripping yourself to shreds, so the other person can stay whole."
"you can fall in love. someone will catch you."
"i'll come find you, and i'll take care of you."
"did you... did you just kiss me?"
"expiration dates are for the weak."
"i think about you before falling asleep. then i dream of you."
"it's fine. more material for my title ix complaint."
"this might be inappropriate, but, you are really extraordinary."
"i know it’s scary, being vulnerable, but you can allow yourself to care."
"everyone likes tall, broody, sullen hunks with genius iqs."
"a good kiss will do that: make a girl forget herself for a while."
"i liked you when i didn’t know you, and now that i do know you, it’s only gotten worse."
"you could stay mad, and we could go to your lab and throw test tubes full of toxic reagents at each other until the pain of third-degree burns overrides your shitty mood? sounds like fun, no?"
"my heart may be broken, but my brain is doing just fine."
"i'm fine. i mean, i wish i were dead, but aside from that..."
"i've never been surer of anything. except maybe cell theory."
"hypothesis: the more i mention an attachment in an email, the less likely i will be to actually include said attachment."

"i think that somewhere along the way i forgot that i was something. i forgot myself."

"hypothesis: if i fall in love, things will invariably end poorly."
"you just had to go and make me fall for you."
"a heart will break even more easily than the weakest of hydrogen bonds."
"there will only be one bed. it doesn't matter what it says; it's always one bed."
"i must say, the line between excellent career choice and critical life screwup is getting a bit blurry."
"you probably don’t like ice cream anyway, because you don’t enjoy anything that’s good in life."
"i have access to your google calendar, asshole. you're not busy. if you don't want to hang out with me, you can just be honest."
"to be fair, i don't like people in general."
"how much do you hate this, on a scale from one to ‘correlation equals causation’?"
"hypothesis: any rumor regarding my love life will spread with a speed that is directly proportional to my desire to keep said rumor a secret."
"approximately two out of three fake-dating situations will eventually involve room-sharing; 50 percent of room-sharing situations will be further complicated by the presence of only one bed."
"i'm never going to get used to the fact that professors are real people and have first names."
"that’s the thing with science. we’re drilled to believe that false positives are bad, but false negatives are just as terrifying."
"maybe so many years alone has warped me in some fundamental way."
"did this fortune cookie just throw shade at me?"
"based on the available information and the data hitherto collected, my hypothesis is that the farther away i stay from love, the better off I will be."
"i had financially rich, but emotionally poor, parents."
"talking on the phone is the hardest, most stressful thing in the world."
"no. i don't want to fake break-up."

Explore my bookshelf!
Tagged by @swanmaids like a MONTH ago but i just remembered this so im doing it now:))
An estimate of how many physical books I own: more than 300 id say… ive got a bunch of books in storage in my moms basement and im running out of space again in my little dormroom….
Favorite author: choosing one is way too hard…off the top of my head id say mary renault, adrian tchaikovsky, octavia e. butler, and tolkien:)
A popular book I've never read and never intend to read: maybe im being too judgmental too quickly but i have yet to read a booktok book that ive loved :,) i also dont like romance in general so im gonna stay away from the whole colleen hoover and ali hazelwood corner over there
A popular book I thought was just meh: the priory of the orange tree ☹️ i wanted to love it but i think the comparisons it got had my expectations way too high and i ended up disappointed :((
Longest book I own: probably some science fiction collection ebook that ive got, maybe the collected stories of arthur c. clarke or something?
Longest series I own all the books to: history of middleearth? 😏 i also own all german released animorphs books (just 30 ☹️) so bookwise thats longer but im unsure about wordcount :///
Prettiest book I own: the 100+ year old butterfly catalogue that belonged to my great-grandfather hehe
A book or series I wish more people knew about: children of time…..im forcing SO many people to read it. dr avrana kern is literally in it
Book I'm reading now: jane eyre & robinson crusoe & he who drowned the world
Book that's been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven't got around to it: TOO MANY…. a wizard of earthsea final answer
Do you have any books in a language other than English: yes. ive got german books and like atleast one in french and latin floating around somewhere
Paperback, hardcover, or ebook? i love ebook for the convenience:) i also like physical books but am indifferent to paperback or hardcover…

Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Love, Theoretically has usurped The Love Hypothesis as my favourite Ali Hazelwood book. Let’s see if I can articulate why 😅
Like all of Hazelwood’s books, I found this incredibly easy to read. I flew through it, finishing it in a day or two (instead of sticking to the readalong schedule oops). It’s got the same humour, science references (which I loved because I like science, though I’m bad at physics), and some fun character cameos and Easter eggs.
I need to take a moment of appreciation for the side characters! Millicent is a riot; Greg is precious and deserves to be protected at all costs. I wish they (and Cece with her mysterious Kirk) had more page time.
My two favourite things about Love, Theoretically were Elsie’s growth and Jack.
Elsie is a people pleaser who adapts herself to whatever she thinks people want her to be, even when it’s detrimental to her life. I related to those aspects of her personality WAY more than I thought I would 🫣 It was empowering to see Elsie find a person she could truly be herself with and learn to speak up for what she wants and desires.
Now, Jack! Where do we find our own Jack? 😍 He was so supportive while also knowing exactly how to push and encourage Elsie to step out of her comfort zone and speak up. He’s also the definition of the “he falls first” trope and I admire he was willing to step back and wait for Elsie to be ready. Their opposites-attract relationship might just be my favourite of all Hazelwood’s couples.
Thank you, Hachette Australia, for sending me a copy of this one as part of a Tandem Collective readalong.

Hello! I hope September is treating you kindly!
Any recs for the fall? Thank you!
Hi! It is, thank you. I'm very excited about it :D
I do have some autumnal recommendations.
The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. Historical. This book does take place in autumn and winter, I think—and I'm pretty sure my feeling there is right because the stepback is soooo autumnal. I also think it has this historical vibe that really gives "grab some some coffee and a sweater and watch the leaves fall". Not all historicals have this, but to me these very dramatic, emotional, insular ones (Lorraine's specialty) absolutely GIVE it. Waking Up with the Duke also gives me this vibe—I want to say that the later chunk of the book does take place over winter, which would logically mean the earlier chunk takes place over fall.
You, Again by Kate Goldbeck. Contemporary. This is gender-flipped When Harry Met Sally, essentially (they meet each other, it's dislike at first sight, she's wild and he's uptight; they meet a few more times, then finally again when she's going through a divorce and they become best friends, but there's obviously more) and WHMS is one of the most autumnal movies OF ALL TIME. I mean. Google that cover. Look at that cover.
The Ex Hex and The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling. Paranormal. These are very LIGHTLY paranormal. Basically, they're set in this very fun, spooky little town where witches live right underneath everyone's nose. They're romantic, they're whimsical, they're sexy. Very "Halloween Eve". Plus, The Wedding Witch, the last(?) book in the series is coming out soon! That adds in a bit of time travel and light Christmas, too.
Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert. Paranormal. Another light Halloween Eve paranormal. The heroine comes from a long line of werewolf hunters, but her family doesn't want her to do it... However, she decides to jump on the opportunity when she meets a werewolf in the wild. The problem? He's actually very sweet, and he DOES recognize her as his mate lol.
Aurelia by S.M. LaViolette. Historical. This one has a very Gothic vibe, which to me is very autumnal. It's set on this remote island, where the heroine goes to paint these specimens the hero, a naturalist, has collected. He has this big estate, he's scarred, he's actually quite flirty lol. You get a sort of eerie sensibility, but it's not overwhelming—kinda on the Bronte side of things.
It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas. Historical. BUT OF COURSE! Obviously, one must read IHOA during autumn.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. Historical. Another one that's very Gothic and therefore very autumnal to me, the classic "Jane Eyre vibes but make it super sexy and way less children-adjacent" setup.
Bride by Ali Hazelwood. Paranormal. This is perfect for those dipping their toes into the water for paranormal; the light, but sexy "vampire and werewolf arranged marriage" book. Totally gives me fall vibes.
Kingdom of the Wicked Trilogy Kerri Maniscalco. Paranormal/fantasy. The spookiest series in the best possible way! Witches, devils, werewolves, ALLLL of it, and with a historical vibe (set in 1800s Italy, I think Sicily specifically). Advertised as YA, but it's really not. The first book doesn't have sex, but the trilogy is sequential and uhhhh the next two books are................. very hot.
The Darkest London Series by Kristen Callihan. Historical paranormal. This Victorian series has everything you want—heat, supernatural creatures, running around in big skirts. I would definitely recommend reading these in order though they're each about different couples, but they're all good so it's fine. Not all set in autumn (lol one is called Winterblaze ffs) but they all give you that SENSE.
The Thornchapel Series by Sierra Simon. Contemporary but with magic. Again, very Gothic, very literally so. Spooky as fuck. Rituals, blood oaths, curses, all the like. Verrrrry sexy. The books actually progress with the seasons—each one has a feast/holiday.ritual corresponding to the season. But you get ALL the vibes.

book recs for @helaenadreamer :)
LSKJD tumblr wouldnt let me reply to you twice so here is the other part of your ask :)
hiiii! oh boy this is a lot of thinking okie...hmm...
Books | I'm not a pretentious reader at all, so LOL I don't know where my reading preferences rank overall in terms of literary merit, but I just went to B&N recently when they were having their big sale, and the ones I got were:
The Narrow Road Between Desires, Patrick Rothfuss
Sword Catcher, Cassandra Clare
Chain of Thorns, Cassandra Clare
The Fragile Threads of Power, V.E. Schwab
In the Lives of Puppets, T.J. Klune
Wolfsong & Ravensong, T.J. Klune
House of Flame and Shadow, Sarah J. Maas (pre-order)
I also have The Hurricane Wars (Thea Guanzon) sitting next to me and would like to start it soon :) and then I literally always have my copy of Fire & Blood close by and the ASOIAF series accessible on my Kindle because I spend a lot of time fact-checking for my canonverse stuff. I really enjoy mythology and fairytales, but I don't have any specific stories there. I like to collect books whenever I travel from local bookshops, though, and have friends that bring me back stuff when they travel as well :)
Other than that, I read a lot of romance on my Kindle and I love Ruby Dixon's everything she's ever written. The stories always have fun worldbuilding and a good level of smut you can't really get elsewhere, so I enjoy them!
Overall favorite novels, though:
Call Me by Your Name, André Aciman
Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice
Anything by Holly Black, SJM, Laini Taylor, or V.E. Schwab
And then I usually try to read any fanfic that has been adapted, rumored to have been adapted, or written by someone who was known in fandom :) so authors like Ali Hazelwood, Jessica Clare, Olivie Blake, and I just downloaded Casey McQuiston's RWRB again. I've learned that "it reads like fanfic" is a good thing because it usually means that the pacing is something that I will enjoy and the stories themselves are more in-line with what I like to read.
I also read a lot of fanfic SKDJLKS but mostly mlm fic at this point in time. A big fan of Sterek, Reylo, Drarry, and more recently, Wolfstar!
thank you for asking!!!
