an: so. I have a love hate relationship with mats playoff beard. I hate hate facial hair most of the time. Like I prefer him my smooth baby faced boy but something about that beard is so so hot and it infuriates me. Anyway.

"I hate it." 

"Yeah?" 

"So much." It was warm and soft and quiet in your bedroom, and you were cuddled into Mat's chest, tucked safely under his chin, under the covers and hiding away from the chilly central air of the apartment when you made your bold statement. "I seriously hate it a lot." Your fingertips scratched through the thick scruff growing along his usually smooth jaw and cheeks, up and down melodically as you continued to deny how much he knew you loved it. Mat's playoff beard had been growing out for a while now, and the further the Isles got in the postseason, the thicker and more even it became. And although you could stand the slight stubble that he'd had before, the darker and more prominent his facial hair became, the more insistent you became that you hated it and wanted your baby-faced boyfriend back. Mat always teased you though, insisting he knew you loved it. He squeezed his arms around your waist and pulled you closer to him playfully. 

"No, you definitely don't."

"I swear I do. It sucks." Now, you cupped his jaw, running the pads of your thumbs over his scratchy cheek. "I can't wait 'til you win the cup so you can finally shave this stupid thing off."

Mat just laughed at you, humored by your insistence even though he knew you were lying. As you complained, your fingers continued to trace the outlines of his face, all the way up to ears and down to his chin. He smiled as your hands slipped back up to cradle his cheeks. "You're really touching it a lot for someone who claims to hate it."

You said nothing in response, but continued. 

Mat fell silent too, just laying back and soaking in all the attention you were willing to give him. Your fingers ran up and down his cheeks, pushing the soft little hairs every which way, running your thumb along the hairs below his plush bottom lip and over the chin that you usually loved to kiss so much, playing with the unfamiliar scruff. Suddenly, Mat heard a little noise from you, muffled by his chest. 

"What was that?" 

"I don't know what you're talking about." 

"You made a noise!" You hand stopped abruptly on Mat's beard and you pressed closer into his chest so he couldn't see your face. You were so close that he could feel the smile on your lips pressing against his skin. "Oh," the word curled up in that devious, playful smirk Mat always did when he was teasing you. "You giggled just now, I know you did!" 

"No, no, no, I didn't!" 

Mat rolled over, pinning you down underneath his body. Before you had the chance to complain about how he'd ruined your perfect, cozy cuddling position, he was pressing his face into your neck and peppering your skin with kisses. You squealed and squirmed under his lips, lifting your hands to grab at his hair, a full smile finally breaking out on your face. 

"Mat stop stop that tickles!" 

He looked up at you, his eyes gleaming in victory. "So you were giggling, weren't you?"

"Okay, that doesn't mean I like your beard!" 

"No, but it means I can make you giggle just by kissing you." He leaned down and pressed his lips against yours, the hairs that boldly outlined his top lip scratching against your face. 

"Mat stopppp!!!" You pushed his face back and saw the little pout he was giving. "You know you can make me giggle just by kissing me when you don't have a beard, too." 

"Awww, baby."

"You do!" With his face cradled between your palms, you took the moment to really look at him. His beard had been growing out since the start of playoffs, and it was making him look more mature, more like man than your precious, sweet boyfriend, and as much as you loved how it felt between your legs and scratching against your thighs, you wanted your smooth-faced Maty back. And it was making it hard to kiss him without getting your face all tickled and scratched up. You flattened your hands on his cheeks, squishing his face together. Mat's lips puckered up and he laughed at the sudden smoosh as you leaned in to peck a small kiss to his lips. Immediately, you recoiled as his mustache ticked your lip. "Maaaat, I'm not gonna kiss you again until the season's over."

"Babyyyy, c'mon, I know you love it." His voice dropped to a cheeky, cocky whisper. "I know you love it when I'm between your legs."

"Mat!" 

"It's true!'

After a few moments, you nodded, pressured by how he looked, hovering above you with that devious smirk. "Yeah, maybe." He chuckled at your hesitant response. "But I don't wanna kiss you again. Your mustache tickles." You reach up and ran your thumb over his cupid's bow, biting back the smile at how fuzzy it was and cupping his jaw once again to pull his face down and peck his lips one more time. "Mm, nope... I'm not gonna kiss you until you shave again." Mat laughed, dropping back down onto his side next to you again. "I'm serious!" 

"Sure you are, babe." He wrapped his arms around you again, pushing his face against your shoulder. "Sure."

you guys haven't been dating that long like maybe you weren't even dating yet like you were more than just friends but like no one had asked the other about dating or what are you two so cus there's that uncertainty so it's easy to let those insecurities run wild especially if someone else triggers em.

so here you are on his couch on your phone while he's making himself a snack after his mornin skate idk. also you can hear him cursing at his food from time to time. you're scrolling through instagram and you see tito had posted a pic with his girlfriend and for some reason you go read some comments which is always a big mistake. maybe you tried to like someone else's comment and it accidentally opened the whole comment section.

you see a comment saying how hockey players always go with the blond skinny ones, another one says the same shit in different words like yall know the comments i mean, there's also comments about how gorgeous she is. just as your face falls and your head is just running with what the comments said, he walks in. you turn off the screen and seeing your reflection look back at you just makes everything feel ten times worse.

he asks if you're hungry too and you say no. then he comes to sit next to you and just stares at you. he knows, somehow he always knows. "your food is gonna get cold uknow" you say kinda annoyed irritated idk cus you know he knows something is up and him staring at you, trying to figure you out, is making you uncomfy. "fuck the food, are you okay?" he finally asks. "are you embarrassed of me? is that why you don't wanna be seen with me ever? am i really so bad?" he just puts his plate on the coffee table and literally drags you in his lap, you try to protest but like it's still him so like you've no chance against him. he just holds you there, hands firmly holding your hips in place as he's staring at you again.

"how did you get something like that into that pretty head of yours?" "i saw your comment on tito's new pic and-" "you read comments she got, right?" "yea, i-" "you really think i would be that shallow? that after everything we have done and how i feel about you, i would just throw you away like a used toy?" he's visibly upset by what you're indicating, that he's just using you and will toss you aside when he finds a more acceptable partner aka a blond skinny girl."no, but-" "do you think i would be that shallow? yes or no," "no" "then why would you think i would be embarrassed about you?" you were just finishing up your work for the day when your phone notified you that you received a text from your boyfriend.

love: movie night?

you smiled to yourself. this is exactly what you need after a tiring day.

you: sure. should i cook or order food?

but you didn't get a reply because a minute later, you hear your door unlock, revealing your boyfriend in all of his post practice glory.

apparently, he was already in the neighborhood when he asked if you wanted a movie night, so sadly there's no food yet.

you frowned at the thought. you wanted pizza. and ice cream.

mat dropped his bags on the floor and walked up to you while removing his shirt, "hi babe. how's your day?"

you reached up around his neck and pecked his lips, "it was good. i'm hungry though. why didn't you buy food?"

"sorry, i missed you so much that i had to get home quick."

"hi girl," y/f said giving you a hug. connor gave you a hug, too. sweet guy. and then the two guys did that weird bro hug. but not too weird, they're hockey boys anyway.

the other couple then proceeded to walk to the kitchen island to prepare the food, but not before connor kissed y/f's temple. again, sweet guy.

you followed the two to help them and then smell of pizza instantly hits you. the telepathy between you and y/f is getting weird. she just knows what food to buy, and when too.

"what's up my hoe, you doing good?" she asked.

"yeah. you?"

"i'm on my period, everything hurts." she groaned.

"you'll be fine babe," connor assured y/f. you swear she is red as a tomato. "y/n, we got ice cream too. can i put it in the freezer?" he asked. "sure," you replied.

"yes, you do, dramatic boy." said y/f as she opens some pizza boxes. wow that smells really good.

"yeah, man." connor added.

"you do, babe. you're pouting right now." you snickered.

mat sighs, looking defeated. he went on to help prepare the drinks that y/f and connor bought and you tried to reach for some plates in the cupboard. as you were tiptoeing to get some, you felt hands snake up on your waist. "i love you too, by the way," mat whispered in your ear as he didn't get to say it back before the two lovebirds knocked at your door. and then you felt him kiss your cheek. it lingered there for quite a bit.

you turned around in his arms and gave him a peck on his lips and said, "good. now go grab the plates for me."

smiling, he reached up behind you, "sure, madam." you rolled your eyes at him.

you sneaked behind mat's back and asked the couple that were in the middle of a conversation, "hey guys, you wanna watch a movie?"

"sure!" they both exclaimed.

you guys headed to the living room carrying the pizza, drinks, glasses, and plates. barzy headed to your bedroom to go grab some blankets and extra pillows.

the four of you are now all cozy on the sofa so you started playing the movie.

"scoot closer," mat said softly. and when you did, he put you across his lap. "is this okay?" he asked.

"very," you blushed.

"okay, you want some pizza?"

your friend snorts and said, "you put her on your lap and you ask her if she wants pizza. how are you going to grab one then?"

"i'll ask you to do it, of course. that's why you're here."

y/f gasps and connor just laughs behind her. "y/n. your man. oh my god." she grunts jokingly. but she does grab a pizza anyway for all of you and handed you all your drinks.

you sigh in content and look around the room. connor and y/f are all cuddled up, focused on the movie, and then you turn to your boyfriend who is already looking at you and suddenly you feel shy.

"what?" you asked.

"nothing. it's just... i love you so much, babe." he smiles brightly at you and connected his forehead to yours.

you swear you just melted right then and there. this man is incredibly sweet. you can't really form the words in your mouth yet so you resorted to threading your hands through his soft hair.

when the butterflies finally calmed down, you kissed the tip of his nose and said, "i love you, too."

Okay so I love this. I’m gonna try for like a hc type thing (which I’ve never done so hopefully it turns out well)

- mat is always touching you in some way

- he needs to get by you?

- his hand rests on your lower back

- you guys are taking your daily walk

- he’s either holding your hand or he has his arm wrapped around your shoulders

- you guys are cuddling on the couch

- he’s either on top of you, legs tangled together and his head tucked in your neck

- or

- he’s got you pulled into his side, your legs on top of his, one of his hands in your hair playing with it

- the other playing with your fingers

- you noticed he does this a lot

- most the time without even thinking about it

- like if you’re scrolling through social media he’s right there next to you

- watching reruns on tv while he traces random patterns on your free hand

- and randomly he’ll bring your hand up and press his lips the the back of it in a gentle kiss
